Inside the Coronation Street set tour - with soap secrets and strict rules on touching windows

Tours of the Coronation Street set have resumed for the first time in two years - the M.E.N's Dianne Bourne headed along to see what you can and can't do on those famous cobbles

I’m standing with a crowd of excited fans about to head into Manchester's real-life Coronation Street set on the official tour of the ITV soap. But before we are allowed to set foot on to the famous street, our tour guide is taking us through some important ground rules.

“No stilettos have we?" She says, peering at all of our footwear choices. "Because you might struggle on the cobbles, we had a lady had to be helped off them when she arrived in sky-high heels last week," she laughs.

And that's not the only thing we are all warned about. Our guide swiftly informs us: "Continuity is really important as this is a working set, so no writing any rude messages in the dust on the windows or on the cars - because believe me we’ve had that before now as well.”

Read more : "I'm a Corrie superfan and I travel for hours to thank the soap's stars"

This is life on the Coronation Street official public tour - which has just reopened to fans for the first time in two years after the easing of lockdown restrictions. Fans can now book on a series of weekend dates to visit the real-life setting for the world's longest-running soap.

And while you're not allowed to put your mucky paw prints on the windows, you can certainly get up close and personal with all the fascinating features of this most famous faux terraced street. You can even peer inside the letter boxes if you fancy.

coronation street tours from canada

Indeed, doing just that reveals one of the many secrets of the soap. For while you will see wallpaper on the immediate wall through the postbox, if you peep a little further you'll see pretty much empty rooms, save the occasional chair or prop.

As you learn on the tour, the majority of the Coronation Street set here at Trafford Wharf Road in Manchester is in fact a facade. That means only the exteriors (and hallways) of the properties and shops here are used for the real-life filming for the TV show.

However, as fans also learn, there are THREE units on this set that have fully-operational interiors. They are the Prima Doner kebab shop, Preston's Petals selling the street's blooms, and the Victoria Street Community Centre a little further up the set.

If you look inside the windows of these three shops, you'll be able to see exactly the same interiors that you see on screen three times a week on the ITV soap. And peek plenty of people do - the doner kebab shop is a particular favourite with fans and it's good to see the 5 Star hygiene rating so proudly displayed in the window!

The set we get to walk around today, on the Trafford side of the MediaCityUK developments, is actually the fourth version of Coronation Street created since the show first aired back in 1960, all the idea of Salford's very own Tony Warren. Back then, of course, the famous cobbles were painted on to an entirely indoor set at Manchester's legendary Granada Studios.

In 1982 the first almost full-sized exterior was created in the backlot of Granada's studios in Manchester city centre. But back in 2011 ITV bosses made the historic decision to start building a huge new site for Coronation Street - moving lock, stock and barrel to Trafford Wharf Road in Trafford Park.

The outdoor set that fans can now visit was painstakingly recreated from the original to cater for the rigours of modern filming, and first welcomed its famous cast and crew in 2013 . And, as our tour guide informs us, it is now the largest static lot production in the whole world.

During the tour we are reminded of many of the famous storylines that have taken place on Corrie over the years - including the tram crash that killed Molly Dobbs and Ashley Peacock back in 2010. We are reminded of hairdresser Maxine Peacock's grisly demise at the hands of serial killer Richard Hillman - and the bench that still remains in her memory outside Audrey's Salon opposite the Rovers Return.

coronation street tours from canada

You can poke around The Kabin, and if you're anything like me, be rather aghast at the very dated, faded array of goods on display there. There's also the famous paper boy model that cheeky Norris Cole reckoned contained a secret before he passed away.

Naturally, it's the Rovers that remains the most popular spot on the street for fans to get a photo. The most famous pub in the world, as we are reminded by our tour guide.

You can get as many of your own photos as you like while on the tour, but at the Rovers there's also an "official tour photographer" capturing an image of you and whoever you're with. We rather regretted on relying on this for our mum-and-son image on our tour, as when we arrived at the gift shop at the end it turned out the technology had conked out that morning and our picture wasn't available.

I'm sure that was just an opening glitch, and for those who do want to purchase a souvenir photo, prices start from £10 in the gift shop. There's also the likes of Corrie biscuits (£4.95), fudge (£2), jam (£2.95), magnets (£2.50), and some rather fabulous leopard print mugs emblazoned with one of Bet Gilroy's most famous quotes: "This isn't a smile, it's a lid on a scream."

coronation street tours from canada

Or, you can snap up one dedicated to the soap's iconic Ken Barlow for £12. His famous quote? "I happen to think that I'm a great guy".

For those hoping to bump into an actual Coronation Street star while on the set visit, I'm afraid that's highly unlikely to happen. The tours are only booked on days when filming isn't taking place on the set, so the only chance you've got of seeing a famous face is if they happen to be at the studios to pick up a forgotten lunchbox or whatever.

You do, however, get to find out plenty of little soap secrets - and, new for the return of the tour in 2022 are some of the latest shops and additions to the street, like the Shuttleworth funeral parlour on Victoria Street and the new EE shop (replacing the former Costa coffee shop). I did try and badger out of the guides where the exciting new addition to the set is going to be - the new shopping mall - but everyone's lips were sealed.

coronation street tours from canada

But you do get to discover where the Weatherfield Police Station is hidden away, and whether the cars are "real" or not on the street. And, in case you're wondering, all the number plates are registered to Coronation Street.

And, as for the random doorways we stroll past on our visit? Well apparently they're secreted about the set to be used as the doorsteps of characters that occasionally crop up - even if they supposedly live 30 miles away from Weatherfield.

How much are tickets?

Tickets (including booking fee) cost £35 per person and £32.50 for under 8s, while carers go free. Tickets are available to purchase now at www.coronationstreettour.co.uk .

Is it worth it?

If you're a massive fan of Coronation Street, it's worth every penny, pretty much - particularly if you never been on previous tours or to the old Granada Studios.

You can take as many photos of you like of all the exterior sets, and heck, even play act your own scene at a favourite spot (like outside Underworld) if you fancy.

However, I went with my six-year-old son George who is obviously a little too young to appreciate Corrie just yet. And, aside from enjoying peeking in the letterboxes, he was dragging his feet and moaning: "Can we go home now?" from about 15 minutes into the tour.

coronation street tours from canada

It also does work out quite expensive if you're planning on taking children along, as it's only discounted for under-8s, and even that is a pricey £32.50 compared to the adult £35.

So my advice would be to make sure you're going with people who have a similar passion for Corrie as you do.

And be prepared for all eventualities with the weather - as the tour is ALL outdoors on the Trafford Wharf Road site. It takes around 90 minutes so comfy shoes are a must.

When can you go?

General public tours on the Corrie set are operating during daytime hours on select Saturdays, Sundays and occasional Bank Holidays.

The dates currently released are for Saturday 2nd April 2022, Sunday 3rd April 2022, Saturday 9th April 2022, Sunday 10th April 2022, Saturday 16th April 2022, Sunday 17th April 2022, Saturday 23rd April 2022, Sunday 24th April 2022, Saturday 30th April 2022, Sunday 1st May 2022 & Monday 2nd May 2022.

Tour bosses say more dates for Summer will be "announced soon".

Coronation Street set tours to return in March after Covid cancellations

coronation street tours from canada

Coronation Street fans will be able to visit the cobbles once again when its set tours return in March.

Visitors will be able to explore the external sets of the ITV soap on a guided tour, which takes in classic locations such as the Rovers Return and Roy's Rolls.

Tours will resume at the MediaCityUK set on 12 March after a two-year pandemic-related hiatus.

Fans will be able to follow in the footsteps of their favourite characters as they walk down Coronation Street, Rosamund Street and Victoria Street, and visit spots like Underworld and The Kabin.

During the 90-minute experience, guides will share secrets from behind the scenes, point out the locations of classic storyline moments, and give details of who lives where and who is up to no good.

Steve Masters, the general manager at Continuum Attractions, which runs the tours, said: "Even with all the drama unfolding on our screens over the last couple of years, those cobbles haven't half been quiet and we've missed sharing them with all our guests.

"But it's going to be well worth the wait and we look forward to welcoming our first guests back on the street next month."

Tours were suspended in the spring of 2020 as England went into lockdown.

They will return for select weekends from 12 March, with dates currently released until early May.

Coronation Street will be moving to hour-long episodes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm as part of ITV's plan to "bolster the key programmes in its pre-9pm schedule", the broadcaster recently announced.

I thought overall the experience was average, there were some really good aspects but then some that let the tour down. The tour is value for money and reasonably priced. We did the star tour and it was fantastic to meet a star of the show and somebody who has been prominent in the storylines, the star was fantastic with everybody but it felt rushed and spending a-bit more time with them to ask the odd question would of made the experience even better. Overall that was a great experience and worthwhile. The other big positive is you get 15 minutes on the cobbles to explore and take photos at the various places seen in the show. Our tour guide was Alfie who did a great job, he’s a very good tour guide however I think the structure he has to follow is not great, I felt he talked too much at times but again that’s because he’s following a structure and script as such it would be much better if there was less talking at the stops, I also think the stop points on the tour were poor and better locations could be chosen by the tour providers Car parking and facilities were poor and needs improving however it looks like that’s currently being developed. Entrance to the tour was extremely poor, long queues down a road is not great, it takes sometime for everybody to get though. Really confused why the we stopped down an alley with old props that looked like a car boot sale, maybe if they had less items and only had ones that were really relatable to the show and identified. Gift shop was reasonably priced but not great. It felt really busy with not much time between tours so we had tours clashing and waiting for tours to Finnish, also because the tours are so close and volume of people it can become busy at times I think smaller groups would be better all round. In summary an average experience with some good elements but the old coronation tour was much better we seen some of the indoor sets and heard some good stories from the show which made it an all round better experience. I would recommend if your a fan of the show and never done the tour before but if you have been the old set then your not missing anything but again the star tour was a great addition Sorry it’s mainly negative but without valid feedback then it will never be improved.

Our guide, Elle, provided an excellent interactive experience, relating the street's history and testing our knowledge of it. She made it both an amusing and an informative tour. It's ninety minutes' worth of Corrie, with ample time to photograph the cobbles and learn some behind - the - scenes secrets.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to write a review! We're so glad you enjoyed yourselves!

Had a wonderful time. Shaun was full of knowledge and amazing jokes! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Will definitely go back again to see what changes are made to the sets. Wonderful day certainly reccomend to any corrie fans!

coronation street tours from canada

It was ok, was expecting a little more activities to do maybe for kids to see they were bored. But the tour guide was lovely and friendly

As a life long Corrie fan (l’m 65) the visit to the street was 5 star. And I enjoyed the experience overall. However:- 1) very overpriced in terms of value for money 2) unnecessarily dragged out. There seemed to be lots of waiting about at the entrance and in car parks with the guide trying to drum up enthusiasm that just was not there. 3) the star reveal turned out to be a damp squib in terms of the lead up the tour guide had given. Yes she plays a character that has had some high profile story lines but once revealed had absolutely nothing to say to us. You would think that these stars would prepare for the tours with a witty anecdote or 2 (and there are script writers who could help them - surely?) 4) The tour ends on a flat note. We were taken to see some props. To be honest just looked like what one might see in any one’s garage. And more standing about in a car park. Constructive feedback: end the tour on a high after the star reveal. Only use cast members who have something to say to the group who have paid a lot of money to see them. The alley with the props in adds nothing to the tour, rather it just leaves everyone glum because it is so underwhelming. Oh and can someone explain the purpose of the black lanyard everyone was given? Nothing to clip to it and we already had wrist bands.

Coronation Street hints at possible exit in Stu and Eliza storyline

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street has hinted at the possible exit of Eliza Woodrow .

Scenes airing this week will see Eliza's father Dom secretly return to Weatherfield after being bribed by her grandfather Stu Carpenter to stay away.

Upon his return, Dom tells Stu that he wants to give back his 10k, and says he would rather his daughter not know about his return.

In new follow-on scenes set to air next week, Stu lets Yasmeen know he will put the money into a trust for Eliza's future – though his granddaughter discovers the envelope with the £10k in Stu's coat pocket with a note reading: "I'm sorry I let Eliza down."

Stu then realises that the truth about Dom's return must be revealed as Eliza and Alya look at him expectantly.

Dom is then tracked down by Hope, Sam and Eliza at the Chariot Square Hotel bar.

With Dom in tow, Eliza heads to Speed Daal, and with Stu and Yasmeen present, she declares that she's not prepared to lose her dad again. As such, she wants to move to Germany with Dom.

Later on in the week, Eliza practices her German, determined to one day go and live in the country with her dad.

Stu then comes to a decision, as he admits to Dom that he has been selfish, and suggests that Eliza move with him to Germany for a trial run of two weeks over Easter, with a view to a permanent move in the future.

Eliza's rumoured exit comes as actress Savannah Kunyo hinted on Instagram that she would be departing, sharing a series of pictures last week including gifts from co-stars.

"Such a special night [love] my Corrie friends will always hold a place in my heart," she wrote.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
