For nearly a decade, Miley Cyrus has been on an endless summer vacation from arena tours.

Although the “Flowers” singer has continued to perform live in recent years, her most recent full arena tour came in 2014, when she went out on her Bangerz tour to support her album of the same name. She has since played only festivals and brief album tours with five to eight performances, including a weeklong stint on “ The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon ” in 2017.

In a recent cover-story interview with British Vogue , Cyrus explained why she has been leery of arena tours, despite her chart-topping hits and impassioned fan base.

“Like singing for hundreds of thousands of people isn’t really the thing that I love,” the former Disney Channel star said. “There’s no connection. There’s no safety.”

Cyrus, who commands a following of more than 200 million users on Instagram, said she’s grateful for her fans, but added that it’s “not natural” trying to please thousands of people. She called the transition from being in front of 100,000 people to being alone afterward “isolating.”

Cyrus’ last headlining arena tour in 2014 spanned nine months and saw her traveling to three continents for 78 shows, including a stop at Los Angeles’ Cypto.com Arena, then known as Staples Center. Packed with hits such as “Wrecking Ball” and “We Can’t Stop” and a lot of twerking , the Bangerz tour amassed ticket sales of more than $60 million. Yet it was then that Cyrus started to rethink touring.

Miley Cyrus Explains Why She Doesn't Want to Go on Tour: 'It Erases My Humanity and My Connection'

"Having every day the relationship between you and other humans being subject and observer isn’t healthy for me," Cyrus said in a TikTok video

miley cyrus tour interview

Miley Cyrus has further elaborated on why touring just isn't "healthy" for her.

In her "Used to Be Young" TikTok interview series — following the release of her single of the same name on Friday, Aug. 25 — the "Flowers" singer shared how much being on the road has taken a toll on her.

"What people don’t really understand about touring is the show is only 90 minutes, but that’s your life," Cyrus, 30, said in a TikTok video posted on Sunday. “If you’re performing at a certain level of intensity and excellence, there should be an equal amount of recovery and rest."

She added, "There’s a level of ego that has to play a part, that I feel gets overused when I’m on tour and once that switches on, it’s hard to turn it off. And I think when you’re training your ego every single night to be active, that’s the hardest switch for me to turn off."

"Having every day the relationship between you and other humans being subject and observer isn’t healthy for me, because it erases my humanity and my connection and without my humanity [and] my connection I can’t be a songwriter, which is my priority," she concluded.

In May, Cyrus  told  British Vogue  that she doesn't have a "desire" to go on tour due to a lack of "connection" and "safety," and she posted to Twitter  shortly after to clarify her comments.

"For clarity I feel connected to my fans NOW more than ever. When I win, WE win," Cyrus wrote in a statement. "Even if I don't see them face to face every night at a concert, my fans are felt deeply in my heart."

The musician continued, "I just don't want to sleep on a moving bus. It isn't what's best for me right NOW, & if you've been following my career you know that I always change and the way I feel about that could too," Cyrus assured fans, before referencing the title of her latest album. "Love you forever , I'm just on my Endless Summer Vacation."

In an Instagram post on Saturday, Cyrus revealed that she was starting a new TikTok series where she'd be “looking back" on her life and "sharing untold stories" from her past. She said the series is inspired by her new single, "Used to Be Young," which dropped on Friday.

Cyrus promised to “start at the beginning” of her story in 1992 and trace the course of her three decades of life, including offering new details about some of her most memorable moments.

“Sometimes it feels like my life started when Hannah Montana was born,” she wrote in the post's caption, teasing the series. “But before Hannah there was Miley. My fantasy was to light up the world with laughter, music & iconic moments that last beyond my lifetime. Decades later I continue to fulfill my purpose because of the love provided by my fans."

She urged her fans to "follow along on my TikTok page over the next few days" to catch new updates in the series.

Miley Cyrus says she 'can't' tour any longer: 'It's so isolating'

miley cyrus tour interview

Miley Cyrus ' touring days may be a thing of the past.

The " Flowers " singer, 30, said she "can't" tour in an interview for the June cover of British Vogue . Her last global endeavor was her 2014 Bangerz tour, which included more than 70 shows across North America, Europe, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand.

Cyrus added that she "not only 'can't' tour," she doesn't want to. "Do I want to live my life for anyone else’s pleasure or fulfillment other than my own?"

The pop star played five music festival dates last year and has otherwise performed publicly since her Bangerz tour, including a tribute concert for Taylor Hawkins last fall, as musical guest on "Saturday Night Live" in 2021, a Grammys performance with Dolly Parton in 2019 and more.

However, she did not undertake a traditional album tour in support of "Younger Now," "Plastic Hearts" or her latest, "Endless Summer Vacation."

Review: Miley Cyrus brings more 'Flowers' on 'Endless Summer Vacation'

Cyrus told British Vogue she enjoys performing for her friends, but "singing for hundreds of thousands of people isn’t really the thing that I love."

"There's no connection. There's no safety," she added. "It’s also not natural. It's so isolating because if you're in front of 100,000 people, then you are alone."

But don't get it twisted. While tour life may feel isolating, Cyrus' connection to her fans remains the same. In an Instagram post Wednesday, the "River" singer explained her previous comments on not touring anymore .

“For clarity I feel connected to my fans NOW more than ever,” Cyrus wrote. “Even if I don’t see them face to face every night at a concert, my fans are felt deeply in my heart. I'm constantly creating and innovating new ways that I can stay connected to the audience I love – without sacrificing my own essentials.”

Cyrus added that while her performances have "been some of the best days of my life," the rough logistics of touring – sleeping on a bus and packing up her "archival" fashion – are less than ideal. “This has nothing to do with a lack of appreciation for the fans (and) everything to do with I simply don’t want to get ready in a locker room,” she wrote.

“It isn’t what’s best for me right NOW, (and) if you’ve been following my career you know that I always change and the way I feel about that could too,” Cyrus concluded. “Love you forever, I’m just on my Endless Summer Vacation.”

In general, Cyrus seems to hint at increasingly stepping out of the spotlight.

The "Midnight Sky" singer suffers from chronic pain and inflammation, which she said flares up after too much stimuli. After releasing her latest album, she attended several industry events and noticed her "adrenals had been kind of drained."

"I was in a lot of pain," Cyrus told British Vogue. "I was kind of back into the pop star thing and I noticed I had this flare-up."

These days, she said, "You’re more likely to catch me and my friends literally walking through rose gardens or going to a museum. It's not about being self-serious. I’m just evolved."

Miley Cyrus clarifies her relationship with fans after saying she has no 'desire' to tour again

Miley Cyrus is clearing up for fans why she doesn't have plans to embark on a concert tour any time soon.

In an interview with British Vogue published May 18, the "Flowers" singer said that in 2014 she took a step back and reevaluated whether or not she wanted to continue touring.

“After the last [headline arena] show I did [in 2014], I kind of looked at it as more of a question. And I can’t," she said. "Not only ‘can’t,’ because can’t is your capability, but my desire. Do I want to live my life for anyone else’s pleasure or fulfillment other than my own?”

Miley Cyrus performs her Bangerz Tour on October 23, 2014 in Perth, Australia.

She added that performing for tons of people "isn't really the thing that I love. There's no connection. There's no safety."

On May 24, the 30-year-old took to Instagram to share a message stating that she feels "connected" to her fans "NOW more than ever."

"When I win, WE win," she began, adding a red heart emoji. "Even if I don't see them face to face every night at a concert, my fans are felt deeply in my heart."

Cyrus said she's still coming up with new ways to stay connected to her audience "without sacrificing my own essentials."

"Performing for YOU has been some of the best days of my life & we will continue this journey together as we have for the last almost two decades. This has nothing to do with a lack of appreciation for the fans & everything to do with I simply don't want to get ready in a locker room. Which is the reality of life on the road," she wrote.

"These looks I've been turning don't travel well. The archival looks don't fold. I just don't want to sleep on a moving bus. It isn't what's best for me right NOW, & if you've been following my career you know that I always change and the way I feel about that could too," she concluded, before signing off that she's just on her "Endless Summer Vacation," referencing her new album.

Most comments on the singer's post were full of support, with some even assuming she'll be back on stage one day.

One person wrote, "ill be there FRONT AND CENTRE the second you’re ready."

Others expressed their hopes for a different kind of Cyrus concert, with one person commenting, "It’s giving Vegas residency, queen! Set those boundaries! Do you!"

In the same interview, Cyrus opened up about her early 20s, when she moved from her Disney Channel persona associated with "Hannah Montana" and into a more controversial and edgy performance genre.

“I’m actually not an attention-seeking person, sitting here as a 30-year-old grown woman,” Cyrus said, explaining that she was "creating attention" to distance herself from the character she played for four seasons.

“I carried some guilt and shame around myself for years because of how much controversy and upset I really caused,” she said. “Now that I’m an adult, I realize how harshly I was judged. I was harshly judged as a child by adults and now, as an adult, I realize that I would never harshly judge a child.”

Don’t Expect Miley Cyrus to Tour Any Time Soon

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Bad news for fans hoping that Miley Cyrus would take her latest album Endless Summer Vacation on the road: The singer revealed in a new interview that she has no plans to embark on another arena tour.

Cyrus hasn’t embarked on a full-scale tour since 2014, a trek in support of Bangerz , which came out a decade — and four studio albums — ago. While she’s played smaller (less than 10 gigs) runs, in her backyard , and performed at dozens at festivals since then — including Glastonbury, Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza — Cyrus told Vogue UK that fans shouldn’t expect a world tour for her latest LP any time soon.

“It’s been a minute,” Cyrus said about touring. “After the last [headline arena] show I did [in 2014], I kind of looked at it as more of a question. And I can’t. Not only can’t, because can’t is your capability, but my desire. Do I want to live my life for anyone else’s pleasure or fulfillment other than my own?”

In a social media statement Wednesday, Cyrus clarified her comments, downplaying the “no connection” remark while reiterating that the “reality of life on the road” is the reason why she doesn’t want to tour.

Although Cyrus opened 2023 with a televised New Year’s Eve show, she currently has no live dates on her calendar for the remainder of the year.

Ride-or-die Smilers already know, but if you aren't up in Twitter search, looking for the latest update on Miley Cyrus ' Bangerz Tour every week, you're missing out on an always changing and growing and constantly entertaining pop show. Along with a grip of glittering new designer togs cycling in week after week, Miles changes up her acoustic set almost every show to keep the variety. With less than a month left of the U.S. leg of her tour, it seems there are still a few surprises up Miley's sleeve. We were lucky enough to catch up with Diane Martel , the tour's creative director and the "We Can't Stop" music director, to get the inside scoop on the weird and wonderful world of Bangerz.

MTV STYLE: How would you define your ole for the Bangerz Tour? What attracted you to the project and what do you oversee?

DIANE MARTEL: Everything about this project was attractive. It was an extraordinary challenge to create a show that is deliberately over-stimulating with an eye on 2014 pop art/culture, while allowing for moments that are simple and heartfelt.

Unlike other people who direct tours, I am a film director, so I took on two roles here. I creative directed and directed the live show with Miley, and I creative directed, co-directed, conceived, and co-produced all of the video content. This was the most challenging job I've had to date. To answer the question, I oversaw every element of the tour from the stage show to the tour book. I have Miley to thank for allowing me the freedom to investigate live performance in this massive way. I think the show is a success and I am proud of it.

Miley's tongue slide on the Bangerz Tour.

How did you and Miley collaborate on creative for the tour? Tells us about the process.

I put together a very specific collection of references, a giant treatment, and showed it to Miley. She added her ideas to mine, and I began working on the tour. We would have meetings every few weeks for me to check in with her to get her approval or comments. It was important for us to create a show that she could play any way she wanted to and that would stay fresh for a long run.

How has the Bangerz Tour changed since its kick-off in February?

Every few weeks, I check back in and her performance has evolved. Miley has massive charisma on stage, she has the chops of a much older, seasoned performer from a bygone era. Her nuanced and spontaneous reactions while mid-song are spot on. Her showbiz banter is solid gold, and she speaks to this generation of fans in very certain terms. Conceiving and creating this show was very comfortable. It used all of my skills. I was a dancer and a choreographer, and I grew up around the theater. My uncle was the eminent theater producer Joseph Papp , so I learned aesthetics from the best of the best directors, actors, writers and designers. I hired fantastic creatives. Es Devlin, the production designer who gives TED talks . Rich and Tone Talauaga , who choreographed several of Madonna ’s tours. Miley's production team is first class. Her band is fantastic. Our dancers were very carefully chosen. As performers, they each have an authentic voice.

Miley riding her giant hot dog on the Bangerz Tour.

We love the hilarious self-aware absurdity of the giant tongue slide and flying hot dog!

The set delivers many surprises: Miley enters and exits through the opening of the set, a giant inflatable Floyd (her dog) comes through the set, as does a giant monkey designed by Ben Jones.

A giant Floyd—RIP :(—on the Bangerz Tour.

Photo: Splash News

I had a photo of a door with clouds around it and Miley wanted to end the show flying through this door, waving. For her it was a reference to the Truman Show . Her flying through that door is quite a personal metaphor. The content was inspired by hundreds of things, too many to name.

Recently, I’ve brought along a two-man horse, which Lisa Katnic made into a gingham two-man horse with a tongue. We added this horse to the second number, " 4x4 ," and inside the horse are two of Miley’s best friends, Cheyne and Lisa. Things are still coming together, there is a DENIM CHICKEN in the works. Miley will also sing different songs on the C stage each night and have special guests.

All gingham everything.

She is on a massive gingham kick right now. I knew I would love her for life when I called her and said I wanted "4x4" to have gingham content and she agreed. She takes things and runs. She is very intense and has a ton of ideas. I’ve seen her grow since we met on the " We Can't Stop " video shoot. Miley Cyrus is evolving every week, she will be around forever, she loves music to her core and she’s a true free spirit.

And finally, how did the collaboration with [ Ren & Stimpy creator] John Kricfalusi come about? How and where do we see it manifest in the show?

Lisa Katnic showed me his fantastic Bjork video . I called him and asked him to do the opening cartoon. Working with him and speaking to him was a high point.

Miley Cyrus is currently on tour . She plays Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY on Saturday, April 5.

Miley Cyrus' new album, Younger Now , comes out Sept. 29. Pixel Dust Digital/Courtesy of the artist hide caption

Miley Cyrus' new album, Younger Now , comes out Sept. 29.

Chances are, you have an opinion about Miley Cyrus. The 24-year-old pop singer got her start as a kid on the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana in 2006. She released her triple-platinum debut album, Meet Miley Cyrus , in 2007 — and has rarely been out of the headlines since, for everything from drug use to sexualizing her image to charges of racial appropriation .

Over the years, she's adopted and incorporated many musical styles into her hits. And with her sixth album — called Younger Now , out Sept. 29 — Cyrus has changed her look and sound yet again, trading in the hip-hop influences of 2013's Bangerz and strange psychedelia of 2015's Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz for a more stripped-down, country sound.

Cyrus spoke to NPR's Lulu Garcia-Navarro about embracing all versions of herself, confronting controversy and drawing inspiration from her family — including her godmother, Dolly Parton . Hear the radio version at the audio link, and read more of their conversation below.

Lulu Garcia-Navarro: Your new album is called Younger Now — and that's apparently a reference to a conversation you had with your mom? Tell me the story.

Miley Cyrus: Well, it was during Christmas time. I was dressed as a reindeer, and I had blinking earrings, and I had the antlers on, and my sweater was blinking and all that — and my mom was like, "When did you become an eight-year-old?" And I said, "I feel younger now." ... I feel less like I have anything to prove.

I think when you are a teenager, young adult, you're trying so hard to be cool or to prove something or to be something away from who you've been as a kid. And I guess as I've gotten older — what Younger Now says is, even though it's not who I am, I'm not afraid of who I used to be.

You've been in the public eye since you were a child, and you've always had this poise and awareness of yourself as a public figure. Are you now reclaiming your childhood? I'm seeing all these references to Hannah Montana, and all the promotional materials [for Younger Now ] has these adorable kid pictures of you in it. Who is that Miley?

Everyone that I've been — whether you are thinking about Hannah Montana or the music I made in the past — all of it has always been the truth. So I think people are saying "the new Miley" or "the more honest Miley" — I've always been that. But I've been honest for who that person was then .

At one point, it was fun for me as a little girl to get dressed up as a pop star, because I wasn't one. It was fun for me to write about relationships in this innocent way, because I was young and innocent and discovering love and what that meant. And so now, I write about it in a more evolved way, or a way that feels happy or more confident. But that's because as [I] grow up, I understand who I am in a different way. I'm happy to be who I am rather than running from it — but running from who you are is a total normal part of growing up, too, because you're just trying to figure out what parts of yourself you like and what parts of yourself you want to work on.

Miley Cyrus' new album, Younger Now, comes out Sept. 29.

What kind artist do you want to be? You are only 24 — Madonna constantly reinvented herself; other artists drill down to their essence. Where do you see yourself on that spectrum?

I think I'm a person that evolves really quickly, and I change. And I think for me, I don't change with the times or with fashion; I change by being active politically or philanthropically. I think that really changes the way that I reflect myself as well, and project who I am. Also, I think I'm very inspired by the surroundings of the real world more than the fashion on the street, or what the music is sounding like on the radio, or what I see on TV. I think that's why people relate to my music; because in today, I'm experiencing humanity with all the other listeners.

Let's talk about a track on Younger Now : "Inspired."

I wrote that song for Hillary Clinton; I'd gone campaigning for her. And I was sitting in this line of really crazy traffic, and then I realized that I was in the middle of a funeral line. And I was behind a hearse, and all these people — I was looking into their cars, they just looked so devastated and so sad. And because I was sitting, I could really see them in their faces, and it just started making me think about life, made me think about my dad, and made me think about my mom, and all the things that really matter. And thinking about how much I have always loved nature; [the song] talks about the bees, and how there might be a day where we won't have bees or blue skies or clear water or fish in the sea because of the way we abuse the planet.

We've got some questions from our listeners. Cassidy Hooper wants to know: What was the hardest song to record off your album?

I think "Miss You So Much." Because I actually wrote that for one of my really close friends whose boyfriend surprisingly OD'ed. I wrote that song about how ... once someone's gone, they're not really gone; if you love them, they're here.

You know, my grandma's in her 80s, and I had been hanging out with her the day I was going to record that song. And it made me kind of think about her, the more I started singing it. I started thinking about, "How can I miss you already?" Hopefully no time in my near future, but there's going to be probably a time in my life where I'm not gonna have her. And [she's] been someone that I really, really lean on. She's my biggest — she literally runs my fan club. I mean that literally; she writes back to all my fans — she does all my fan mail. So it made me think about how you can miss someone when they're still here, but you start thinking about a time when they might not be.

Jessy Briton Hamilton wants to know this: Your dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, came from humble roots in Appalachia. How do you see your heritage as part of your life?

I think my dad went kind of to this overnight — he would kill me for saying "overnight success," because I know he had to work so hard. He literally lived in his car. But I mean, overnight success in [that] one day he was sleeping in his car and the next day he had one of the biggest songs in history. So I just think that's really affected me, too. Know that everything can change, that you've got the control and the power to keep moving and to never give up. That's his mantra: never give up.

You've gotten a lot of criticism for how you incorporated black music into your work, on the Bangerz album in particular. There is a lot of anger in the African-American community; The Root just wrote that your music has exploited black people for profit. Do you understand that anger? Do you accept it?

I respect that, and I can't tell you that that's my intentions. So I always feel, you know, apologetic and sympathetic to those who feel a way. But that's not my intentions so I can't say that I agree.

Are you still interested in that kind of music? You've sort of moved away from that in this album.

Yeah, but I think that that's labeling. It's like: that kind of music — like, what does that mean? I love music; I love all styles of music. I love Mike WiLL 's music; I love Wayne Coyne 's music. I love country music; I love Dolly [Parton]'s music. I love Leonard Cohen 's music. I may be the only person that has Wiz Khalifa and Leonard Cohen on the same iPod. I don't ever label music.

Did Miley Cyrus 'Flirt With Bad Taste' Or Dive Right In?

The Two-Way

Did miley cyrus 'flirt with bad taste' or dive right in.

You are very vocal as a self-declared feminist. But you have also gotten a lot of flack for your performance with Robin Thicke at the Video Music Awards in 2013 of a song that some view as promoting rape culture. You know, it's been a couple of years —

That's so ridiculous, I'm sorry. Again, I empathize with people's feelings, because opinions are a natural response in human beings. ... But besides that, that's so hurtful actually to take something that is good-intentioned — and what's the difference of anyone else doing what they do in pop music? What's the difference with Britney Spears coming oiled up with a snake, I mean, it's like the same thing? It's any pop singer. Look at Kathleen Hanna — that's punk!

Your art makes people uncomfortable sometimes!

That's what punk is all about. If you don't piss somebody off, then that's not punk rock, I guess. But I wish people wouldn't be pissed off. There are so many real, true, problems in the world. If people would take their angst and their opinions and actually do something besides worry about what I'm doing. I'm a pop star. I'm good: I have a house, I have a roof over my head, I have food to eat. There are people without those things. Go and use your time and your opinion wisely, and get mad and call your senators about the things that matter.

I'm doing what I need to do. I'm working in my community. I'm changing the way people view sexuality. I'm working with suicide prevention programs. I'm feeding people that don't have food to eat. I'm doing my part as a human. You better go do your part if you're gonna even have one little opinion about what I do. You better be doing some great things for your community.

I'd like to ask about your godmother, the great Dolly Parton. What advice has she given you about navigating interviews like this one, or how to keep your career going for so long?

The best thing that she does is she's not afraid to laugh at herself. And she pushed the boundaries for country music, by looking the way that she does, and saying the things that she says, and being sexual in that way. I mean, there's no one that's been able to make country music sexual more than Dolly! But she would say, "Well, that's not why I'm doing this!" — I mean, she does it because she likes it. If you want to be pushing the boundaries, you have to like it. And to remember that you want to make music for the people that love your music for your honesty, and for your fans. Otherwise, just have fun and make the music that you love.

“I Realise Now How Harshly I Was Judged” Miley Cyrus On Finding Her Peace And Making The Album Of The Summer

Miley Cyrus explodes into the room in a black Saint Laurent slip dress, a two-foot Gucci beefeater-style hat on her head.

“Is it sickening,” she demands rhetorically, her delicious southern rasp familiar in a way only a squillion light years of celebrity living can make it. In her thrall, festooned around the suite on the 33rd floor of The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad, sit her travelling chorus of creatives, the indispensable “comfort blanket” of five men who embody the sort of modern Hollywood bohemia she adores, and who accordingly she goes everywhere with. They offer consensus: yes. Just to be sure she struts the room wall-to-wall, eyes darting.

Cyrus – now 30 (how is she only 30?), with several lifetimes of glory, nonsense, trauma and good times under her belt – is in showgirl mode. For the moment, at least. My word, she’s a gas. “What is with this art?” she asks hammily between poses, offended by some neutral swirls in a picture frame. Then she catches sight of herself on the iPhone screen of Stephen Galloway, acclaimed choreographer and her friend. “It’s giving Pam Tillis,” she decrees, patting the towering fluffy black helmet to the delight of her troop, before launching into a funny, gossipy tale about said Pam, the bouffanted country singer, who she met recently and who asked her to pass her best on to Cyrus’s godmother, Dolly Parton, which she dutifully did. Parton sweetly replied, “Oh, Pam, I haven’t seen her in years.”

“But thennn,” says Cyrus, tingling with delight, “I went on to Pam’s Instagram and what do you know? There’s a photo of her with Dolly [taken recently]! Country shade,” she declares of her beloved Dolly: “You can’t beat it.” She dives on to the bed next to me, shaking out her bleachy, rooty, sexy hair. Fear not. The monologue keeps going: “Dinosaur dust art”; “These earrings are not it”; “Am I going on tour? Yeah, the Aman hotel tour. Singing in the lobby for that complimentary massage.”

To wit: a gas. Although you can’t help noticing it takes close to 20 minutes for Cyrus to sustain eye contact that lasts longer than a second. She is, seemingly, not a person who takes joy in the novelty of strangers, who doesn’t trust them right away. Frankly, why should she?

But while the initial energy is remote and flighty, it takes absolutely no time at all to become riveted by her. Astonishingly famous since her early teens, hers is a fate perhaps only understood by a handful of people during mass media’s relatively short history. One’s reductive first instinct is to interpret her thrilling lack of chill as toxic-media-induced, post-child-stardom neurosis. But she is having none of that.

The shopworn narrative of a famous woman’s survival and triumph? “So f**king basic.” Some time later, when it’s only us chatting, she says, “One thing I wouldn’t want this story to become is a complaint of being a woman in the industry. I don’t need this to be a women’s empowerment story. I wear my empowerment at all times. I don’t need to profess it.”

In truth, she is sage, witty and unpredictable, prone to find the whole machinery of fame ridiculous and damaging – especially for women. She is essentially done with engaging or even talking about the whole rodeo. Certainly in trad media terms. “Why would I do British Vogue ?” she wonders aloud at one point later, just the two of us on a sofa. “Why would I even do an interview?” She seems genuinely curious to have found herself here.

Well, real talk. She was dying to be photographed by Steven Meisel . She also happens to be enjoying one of the most successful years of her career as a musician, to say nothing of her arrival at a new fashion peak, thanks to a fabulous run of vintage looks at her New Year’s Eve special for American network television, and a smattering of judicious appearances, including at the Versace runway show in LA in the days before the Oscars (an absolute fashion nut, she is quick to credit her beloved personal stylist Bradley Kenneth’s hand in her current era of killer looks).

Then there is “Flowers”. At the time of writing, the song – an addictive comeback single that has made its way to instant classic status – has spent eight weeks at the top of the US Billboard charts, with another 10 consecutive at No1 in the UK. In early May it became the fastest song in the history of Spotify to clock up a billion streams. Released in January, at this point its staying power is so remarkable it seems in danger of becoming the song of the summer. Who knows. Given the album is called Endless Summer Vacation – which, for Miley, is as much lifestyle mantra as record title – perhaps it will?

She achieved her latest internet-smashing moment despite doing next to no press. A boss move. Instead, she tossed the song out into the world and let social media eat itself alive. Are the lyrics of self-care and personal triumph (“I can love me better than you can”) a direct riposte to her ex-husband, the Australian actor Liam Hemsworth? Did the video, with more than 435 million views on YouTube (and counting), exquisitely directed by Jacob Bixenman, with nods to Helmut Newton and Michael Mann, really feature Cyrus wearing one of Hemsworth’s old tux jackets?

She has no time for any of this. “I never need to be a master at the craft of tricking an audience,” she says, shrugging. “It will set itself on fire all by itself.” Rather than an explicit diary of her experience, she says she simply wanted to make a song that she could do with hearing. “I wrote it in a really different way. The chorus was originally: ‘I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand, but I can’t love me better than you can.’ It used to be more, like, 1950s. The saddest song. Like: ‘Sure, I can be my own lover, but you’re so much better,’” she says. In the end she rejected the gloom. “The song is a little fake it till you make it,” she says. “Which I’m a big fan of.”

She immediately sensed it was a hit – “I’ve been doing this for a while” – and so the night of the release she went out dancing with her crew at the Sunset club at The West Hollywood Edition. “I’m sober. I don’t drink, I don’t… you know, but I celebrate. It’s like one o’clock in the morning and Lil Nas X walks into the club and he asks me the most interesting question. He said: ‘Are you so anxious about how successful ‘Flowers’ is?’”

She thinks about it again now. “I was like, ‘No. I might be No1 now, but No2 is on its way.’ Everything is seasonal,” she says, her grey-blue eyes finally alighting on mine. She thinks we all need to be more honest about the false god of unfluctuating success – even pop stars. “A lot of headlines [recently] have said, ‘This is Miley’s moment.’ And I’m like, ‘That’s exactly what it is. It’s a moment. And it will be over.’”

“That’s not pessimistic,” she continues, smiling. “That’s honest and that’s OK with me. I actually prefer it. I don’t like to stay big.” When Endless Summer Vacation was released she wasn’t even in LA and didn’t have her phone with her. “My boyfriend brings his phone and I don’t bring one. I had no way of knowing what number it would [chart at], and it wasn’t of importance to me because it wouldn’t have changed anything. Someone could say, ‘It would be this number if you did that, or this number if you sell your soul…’” She shrugs again. “I’ve been in the Garden of Eden before and I’ve taken the red apple, and it never feels good.”

So here we are. Miley’s first sit-down interview in some time and she’ll be damned if she’s going to sell herself to me or you. She knows what that game looks like too well. I’m not sure anyone who didn’t achieve global prominence in the entertainment industry as a teen in the distinct quagmire of Noughties media could understand it better. First, of course, came Hannah Montana in 2006. The crazily successful Disney show, in which she played a teenage pop star with a double life, became such a phenomenon that she ended up selling out stadiums around the world in minutes (the Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert becoming the highest-selling concert film of all time). A daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, she has been managed by her adored mother Tish since day one, while her adolescent life was a truly head-spinning mix of standard Tennessee home life plus superstar day job, with a top note of prurient, morally muddled public interest in her coming of age that was, even at the time, distinctly gross.

It certainly sounds like too much for a person to handle, but I will say it’s made Cyrus incredibly smart. She is unique among anyone I’ve interviewed in her assessment of fame; she is almost Neo-esque in her ability to see the green code of the matrix around her. “I’m actually not an attention-seeking person, sitting here as a 30-year-old grown woman,” she says. Miley’s aware that her explosion into early adulthood, whether riding naked on a demolition ball in the video for “Wrecking Ball” or her twerk-tastic performance at the 2013 MTV Music Video Awards, still occupies space in the public consciousness. “I was creating attention for myself because I was dividing myself from a character I had played. Anyone, when you’re 20 or 21, you have more to prove. ‘I’m not my parents.’ ‘I am who I am.’”

She is movingly even-natured when she goes on to describe the fallout: “I carried some guilt and shame around myself for years because of how much controversy and upset I really caused,” she says. “Now that I’m an adult, I realise how harshly I was judged. I was harshly judged as a child by adults and now, as an adult, I realise that I would never harshly judge a child.”

Her tone is that of a person who has processed her fury. But wow. Sometimes she laughs about it. A friend asked her for some skincare advice recently and in a joking response she sent them a story a tabloid magazine ran a decade ago in which they’d highlighted her acne and gone with the headline: “A Breakout Year!” Jesus. “Right? Like who thought that I was not a person who would be hurt by that? Like I was clearly a 20-year-old girl. Sure, at 20 I was like every 20-year-old. You think you’re grown, but now I’m like, ‘Oh, no, I was fully a kid.’” She still gets weirded out by what she sees published about herself. “I was reading this thing the other day about women in the industry who don’t have children and I was on the list,” she says, alongside the likes of Helen Mirren, Oprah Winfrey and Dolly. Her takeaway? She’s done trying to tool her statements or make life choices that are about making everyone happy.

Interestingly, for someone with more than 207 million Instagram followers, this extends to her fans. Don’t get her wrong. She’s grateful. But says she can’t live her life for them anymore. She loves an audience but not in the way she grew up on. “Look, the kiki follows me everywhere that I go,” she says of Galloway, Bixenman and Kenneth, as well as Bob Recine and James Kaliardos (her personal hair and make-up team), all of whom are kicking around today. “I love performing but pretty much for them,” she says, smiling. “Like singing for hundreds of thousands of people isn’t really the thing that I love. There’s no connection. There’s no safety.” I guess it’s pretty hard to people-please 100,000 individuals simultaneously? “Right,” she says, nodding. “It’s also not natural. It’s so isolating because if you’re in front of 100,000 people then you are alone.”

Cyrus was known to give everything on tour. She would perform for hours, take requests, not quit that stage until she was pretty sure every single person had had the night of their lives, swaying to “We Can’t Stop”, bouncing to “Party in the USA”, shedding a tear to “The Climb”. Now she’s not sure she can do it anymore; certainly not in the foreseeable. “It’s been a minute,” she says of her years-long hiatus. “After the last [headline arena] show I did [in 2014], I kind of looked at it as more of a question. And I can’t. Not only ‘can’t’,” she self-corrects, “because can’t is your capability, but my desire. Do I want to live my life for anyone else’s pleasure or fulfilment other than my own? And, you know what…” she lets her conclusion hang in the air.

It’s led to a fascinatingly radical approach to a mega, modern pop career. During the past decade, she’s released some of her finest tracks – “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart”, “Midnight Sky”, “Flowers” (of course) – while her supreme gifts as a vocalist have never been so lauded. Everyone from Elton John to Gloria Gaynor rates her among the best vocal stylists in the business. But her life now, she explains, is dedicated to her own happiness. The traditional cycle of album, tours and strategic collaborations hold little interest. The work she chooses has to speak to her experience.

Cyrus and Hemsworth divorced in 2020 and, despite the plethora of Twitter theorisers, she is allergic to the idea of people seeing Endless Summer Vacation , or any of her recent music, being directly about that relationship. “I wouldn’t erase my story or want it to be erased,” she says of that 10-year relationship coming to an end. “Having an interesting life makes for interesting storytelling,” she adds, explaining she sees herself more as a novelist, weaving myriad experiences into any given track. A couple of summers back she started dating Maxx Morando , drummer with the band Liily and a gifted songwriter and producer, who she’s made a handful of public outings with. “We got put on a blind date,” she says of how they met. “Well, it was blind for me and not really for him. I thought, ‘The worst that can happen is I leave.’” When he calls mid-interview her phone starts playing “Tyrone” by Erykah Badu. “I call that ‘boyfriend sexy ringtone’,” she says, smiling.

These days, Cyrus lives in some splendour in LA, surrounded by her beloved artworks, her closets deep with fashion, and a revolving door of friends and family. She adores fitness – everything from ViPR to TRX training to dance and partner work, so she often has friends over to work out. She’s not big on gender definitions for herself; a few years ago she floated the idea of pansexuality but seems to have evolved beyond the need for a label, personally. She says: “I only hang out with, like, gay men. So they come over, and we do a whole class based off of Nicki Minaj or we have a Britney series. I have a Madonna ‘Vogue’ series, which is doing the entire bow choreography with, like, our little weights.” She laughs.

Everyone asks her for fitness advice, though she offers it with a pinch of salt. “I actually had this idea of doing kind of like a wellness comedy, which was me basically saying, ‘I’m Miley Cyrus and I’m a pop star and I can’t tell you what to eat or what supplements to take because I haven’t seen your lab work.’” She’s big on journalling and pulls up an entry on her phone and reads it to me: “I make choices that I’m proud of that protect me… I put my mental and physical health before a paycheque… I freed up space for myself to be with friends and family doing what I love, which is working out, eating well, learning ways about how to enhance my life, staying dedicated to practices and protocols that are specifically designed for me.”

miley cyrus tour interview

She works with “amazing” healers, and adds that more recently: “I did a lot of EMDR.” She started the eye-movement, memory-linked trauma therapy a little over a year ago. “It’s so helpful,” she says. “Essentially, you delete the physical sensations associated with these painful memories. The EMDR really helped me.”

While eschewing the child-star clichés, she agrees that her life has not been straightforward. A certain toll has made its way to her body, and she has chronic pain and inflammation, which descends whenever she’s overdone it. “After the album [came out] I had a flare-up,” she says of an episode earlier this year. “I was in a lot of pain. I had gone to the Gucci release party, I had gone to Versace, you know, my adrenals had been kind of drained, and I was kind of back into the pop star thing and I noticed I had this flare-up. And then when I went skiing, which doesn’t make a lot of sense because it’s, like, super active, but I felt better. I think it was because I was anonymous in my ski gear. I had my big goggles on, you know, and no one would ever know who I am.”

Her best strategy is, she explains, to keep everything real. She says recently, a songwriter came to her with a track. “It was like, you know, the standard f**ked up in the club track. And I was like, ‘I’m two years sober. That’s not where I spend my time, you know. You’re more likely to catch me and my friends literally walking through rose gardens or going to a museum.’” She laughs. “It’s not about being self-serious. I’m just evolved.”

It inspired her to write a different song. She hopes to release it soon, she explains, as she recites a line from it to me, her eye contact steady, her voice calm.

“I know I used to be crazy,” she says. “I know I used to be fun. You say I used to be wild. I say I used to be young.”

Miley Cyrus has explained why she doesn’t find touring to be “healthy” for her.

The singer decided to take a break from performing in May 2023, stating: “I can’t do another arena tour.”

Explaining that “singing for hundreds of thousands of people isn’t really the thing that I love”, Cyrus said: “After the last show I did, I kind of looked at it as more of a question. And I can’t. Do I want to live my life for anyone else’s pleasure or fulfilment other than my own?”

The news divided fans, which prompted the singer to release a statement, which said that her decision did not stem from “a lack of appreciation for” her followers.

Now, in a new interview shared on her TikTok , the former Hannah Montana star has opened up about the negative impact touring has on her.

She said that “what people don't really understand about touring” is that “the show is only 90 minutes, but that's your life”.

Cyrus continued: “If you’re performing at a certain level of intensity and excellence, there should be an equal amount of recovery and rest.

“There's a level of ego that gets overused when I’m on tour and once that switches on, it's hard to turn it off. And I think when you’re training your ego every single night to be active, that’s the hardest switch for me to turn off.”

She added: “Having every day the relationship between you and other humans being subject and observer isn’t healthy for me because it erases my humanity and my connection. And without my humanity and my connection, I can’t be a songwriter, which is my priority.”

Miley Cyrus has explained why touring isn’t ‘healthy’ for her

Elsewhere in the chat, Cyrus revealed that Adele was the inspiration behind her new song “Used to Be Young” , and also reflected on the open letter written by late Irish singer Sinead O’Connor about Cyrus’s video for “Wrecking Ball”.

Following the video’s release, Cyrus said she had been inspired by the visuals for O’Connor’s 1990 hit “Nothing Compares 2 U”, in which the artist could be singing directly to the camera in various close-up shots.

Writing to the then-20-year-old “in the spirit of motherliness and with love”, O’Connor said it wasn’t “‘cool’ to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos”, and warned Cyrus not to let herself be “pimped” by the music industry.

In response, Cyrus proceeded to make fun of past tweets by O’Connor, which had been sent at a time when she was struggling with her mental health, and compared O’Connor to former Nickelodeon child star Amanda Bynes, who was also struggling with mental health issues.

“At the time when I made ‘Wrecking Ball’, I was expecting for there to be controversy and backlash, but I don’t think I expected other women to put me down or turn on me, especially women that had been in my position before,” Cyrus recalled.

“So this is when I had received an open letter from Sinéad O’Connor, and I had no idea about the fragile mental state that she was in.”

Growing emotional as she discussed her response, Cyrus continued: “I was also only 20 years old. So I could really only wrap my head around mental illness so much and all that I saw was that another woman had told me that this idea was not my idea.

“Even if I was convinced that it was, it was still just men in power’s idea of me and they had manipulated me to believe that it was my own idea when it never really was. And it was. And it is. And I still love it.”

The New York Times

Artsbeat | the long, winding interview with miley cyrus, the long, winding interview with miley cyrus.

Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips and Miley Cyrus, performing at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Last night, after hosting the MTV Video Music Awards in a typical polarizing performance, Miley Cyrus surprise-released a free, 23-track new album, “Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz,” written and recorded largely at her home with members of the Flaming Lips. In a five-hour interview the previous weekend, Ms. Cyrus, 22, discussed the experimental project, which you can read about here . But along the way, she also touched on her budding friendship with Caitlyn Jenner, learning about herself through drugs, and how she’s learned to handle the media.

Here are edited excerpts from the conversation.

On bonding with Caitlyn Jenner: The first time I ever got to know Caitlyn, it was a weird day. I was so stoned sitting outside by my pool, so bored. A blocked call, which I never answer, beeped in. I answer and it was like, ‘Hey, this is Bruce’ — this was before Caitlyn transitioned. Kendall [Jenner] had my number somehow. He was saying, ‘Thank you, because my kids understand what I’m going through now because of what you’re doing with your foundation . They follow you on Instagram.’ I’m a non-trans person fighting for trans rights. I learned a lot from her.

On psychedelic experiences:

I think ayahuasca is a healing thing. I only did it one time, but I want to do it again. I loved what it did for me. We all think we’re good people, but I wanted to know in my heart, in my deepest soul. I wanted to know what outrides what: Am I really the person I think am? When I was on my trip, all I could focus on was the animals. I was puking up different animals — dolphins and seals and giraffes. It’s really crazy. This was literally a week before the Met Ball. At Met Ball, I was like, “Guys, none of this matters.”

On the length of the “Dead Petz” project:

I had a meeting with my team and the only note I got was that my album was too long. So then I passive aggressively added one song [“Miley Tibetan Bowlzzz”] — not to be mean, just to prove that it can’t be too long. My dad recorded me playing the Tibetan bowls and I put it near the end. I want people to listen all the way through just once, because it’s a nice story. But then you can listen to your favorite songs however you want.

On her new songs “Something About Space Dude” and “Space Bootz”:

I was in love with an astronaut. An actual astronaut. Only in my life.

On her creative method:

It’s really hectic, but it’s also very centered. There’s a line — maybe people don’t see it, but in my world, there’s a line. It exists. I always say: I’m extreme but I’m logical. I always am very reasonable. Even if my reason isn’t reasonable to you, it is reason. It’s not just shooting a gun into the air.

On interviews:

I used to hate doing interviews, but interviews are actually really fun for me now, because it’s fun to say how you feel and to not worry about it. You say it honestly and then as you say it honestly, you figure out things — how you really feel. Everything that I’m saying is just the truth, so it could never seem all over the place. You get in a habit, like when people say, “How are you doing?” You always say, “Good.” That’s what I stopped doing.

Miley Cyrus to Share Personal Stories of Her Life Amid Release of New Single "Used to Be Young"

Miley cyrus has announced she will soon drop a new song amid the release of a tv "retrospective interview," in which she will share "stories about the first 30 years of my life.".

While teasing her new music,  Miley Cyrus  revealed she'll be taking fans on a journey to a time before she hopped off the plane to LAX.

The Hannah Montana alum confirmed that immediately following release of her upcoming TV special,  Endless Summer Vacation: Continued (Backyard Sessions) , she'll be sharing the new track "Used To Be Young" with fans.

"Aug 24th @ 10pm EDT on ABC," Miley wrote on Instagram  Aug. 17 about the program. "This time with a retrospective interview sharing stories about the first 30 years of my life in honor of [new single] U2BY."

The Tennessee native continued, "This song is dedicated to my loyal fans. I love YOU for loving every version of ME. Always, Miley."

The 30-year-old's note to fans appears to allude to her highly scrutinized time growing up in the spotlight since rising to fame as a Disney Channel child star —including a racy performance at the MTV VMAs and a subsequent nude appearance in her "Wrecking Ball" music video  in 2013.

This latest track from Miley comes just five months after releasing her eighth studio album, Endless Summer Vacation , which also contains her hit breakup single "Flowers" —which many fans believe is about her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth , as well as singles "River" and "Jaded," the latter of which dropped in April.

Speculation about even more new music from Miley had recently sparked in recent days when posters bearing her photos along with lyrics from several of her past hits, such as "I came in like a wrecking ball" ("Wrecking Ball"), "I hopped off the plane at LAX" ("Party in the USA") and "I can almost see it, that dream I'm dreaming" ("The Climb") started appearing in cities all over the world, like Los Angeles, London and Tokyo.

In fact, some of the posters even contained lyrics from her upcoming single.

"I know I used to be crazy. I know I used to be fun," Miley tweeted Aug. 15, alongside a video showing a wall of posters. "You say I used to be wild. I say I used to be young."

And Miley wasn't the only one showing the new artwork some love: The singer's mom,  Tish Cyrus , and her fiancé ,  Prison Break actor  Dominic Purcell , shared a photo of themselves checking out a group of posters on Los Angeles' Sunset Boulevard on Instagram.

"My girl on Sunset....." Tish wrote . "@mileycyrus we're proud of you Miles...."

In his own post , Purcell added, "Proud mumma bear proud @tishcyrus ..... love ya both. Just rad humans."

Read on to learn 30 fascinating facts about Miley below:

1. She was born  Destiny Hope in 1992. Her parents Billy Ray Cyrus  and Tish Cyrus chose that name because, her father told US Weekly , "She's a giver. She believes that we're all put here for a reason, and that's to give back to our fellow man. I'm real proud of her."

2. Because she smiled often as a child, her family nicknamed her "Smiley," which was eventually shortened to Miley. The star legally changed her name to Miley Ray Cyrus in 2008.

3. Her godmother is Dolly Parton , who became close with her Billy Ray after they worked together in the early 1990s.

"We just kind of gelled, 'cause we're both country kids. We had a lot of fun just talking about that," Parton said on SiriusXM's Just Jenny in 2019. "And then when Miley came along, I said, 'She's got to be my fairy goddaughter.'" (Parton would later make an appearance on Hannah Montana as the titular character's fairy godmother.)

4. Miley knew she wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry after seeing a production of Mamma Mia! with her dad, who told the Toronto Star that she grabbed his arm and said, "'This is what I want to do, daddy. I want to be an actress.'"

5. She made her acting debut on Billy Ray's PAX TV series Doc .

6. At age 11, Miley auditioned for the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana . The producers initially thought she was too young, but after an exhaustive six-month search that had over 1,000 actresses read for the role of the secret pop star, executives brought Miley, then 12, back in.

"She stood in front of us and knocked us out," Gary Marsh , Disney's president at the time, told USA Today in 2007. "I remember I came back to my desk that night and wrote a note to my team saying, 'This is either something extraordinary or a chance that didn't pay off.' That bet has paid off in truly unimaginable ways."

7. During a 2020 interview with Hilary Duff on her Instagram Live show Bright Minded , Miley admitted the Lizzie McGuire star  inspired her to audition for Hannah.

"The only reason I wanted it was so I could do whatever you did," Miley told Hilary. "And so really, I don't think I gave a s--t about being an actress or a singer. I just wanted to copy you no matter what."

8. Hannah Montana premiered in March 2006 and quickly became one of Disney Channel's highest rated series of all time and made Miley one of Hollywood's most popular young stars. By 2008, paparazzi photos of Miley were being sold for anywhere from $30,000 to $150,000, according to The Los Angeles Times .

9. While they portrayed best friends on-screen, Miley revealed she and co-star Emily Osment "struggled to get along" during the first two seasons.

"There was competition between us—girls struggle with that, and we were no exception. I didn't do much to fix it," Miley wrote in her 2009 memoir, Miles to Go . "I mean, I wanted to, but I had no idea how to go about fixing it. I never got along with girls as well as I did with guys." But the two eventually became friends, with Miley explaining, "It took us a while to get into a groove. We both needed to learn how to be sensitive to each other."

10. After the series ended in 2011—there was also the 2009 big-screen release  Hannah Montana: The Movie in 2009—Miley admitted she struggled to find herself.

"Some of my audience was so attached to a character, which wasn't me," she told Howard Stern in 2020. "So, then that does a lot of psychological stuff, where it's like, 'Am I valuable as myself?' OK, the whole show's premise was that when I had my normal hair and looked like myself, no one gave a s--t about me. And then when I got all dolled up and put a wig on, all of a sudden, you know, I'm being chased by people chasing my tour bus. So, that's a lot to put on a kid—to go, 'When you're yourself, no one gives a f--k.' But then when they go and kind of groom you to look like something else, something that you're not, and you're really young, and it's a lot of makeup and, you know, wigs and all this stuff, it does something psychologically."

11. It was love at first sight for Miley when she met her first boyfriend Nick Jonas at a charity event in 2006, when they were both 13 years old. "We became boyfriend and girlfriend the day we met," Miley revealed to Seventeen in 2008. "He was on a quest to meet me, and he was like, 'I think you're beautiful and I really like you.' And I was like, 'Oh, my gosh, I like you so much.'"

After secretly dating, the couple broke up and Miley admitted she "bawled for a month straight" after their split. "Nick and I loved each other," she told the mag. "We still do, but we were in love with each other. For two years he was basically my 24/7. But it was really hard to keep it from people. We were arguing a lot, and it really wasn't fun."

12. Her relationship with Nick inspired her breakup anthem "7 Things," with Miley even wearing the necklace he gave her in the music video for the 2008 hit. The couple briefly reconnected in 2009, with their short-lived reunion inspiring The Jonas Brothers  ballad "Before the Storm," which featured Miley.

13. While filming The Last Song in 2009, Miley began dating her co-star Liam Hemsworth. They were on and off for a decade before getting married in 2018 . But Miley and Liam announced their split eight months later and they were officially divorced in 2020 .

14. Miley later admitted that the trauma of losing their house in Malibu during the California wildfires in 2018 drove her decision to marry the Hunger Games star after a two-year engagement.

"We were together since 16," she said on The Howard Stern Show in 2020. "Our house burned down. We had been like, engaged—I don't know if we really ever thought we were actually going to get married, but when we lost our house in Malibu...I just clung to what I had left of that house, which was me and him. And I really do and did love him very, very, very much and still do, always will."

15. During her 2020 appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Miley reflected on her first "hook-up," confirming it was Liam without directly naming her ex-husband.

"I ended up marrying the guy, so that's pretty crazy," she said. "I lied and said that he wasn't the first, so I didn't seem like a loser."

16. Shortly after announcing her split from Liam, Miley made headlines when she began a whirlwind romance with  The Hills: New Beginnings  alum  Kaitlynn Carter . The couple broke up after two months, with Kaitlynn admitting the public's interest in their romance played a factor in their split.

"We actually did work pretty hard to keep it as private as we could, but it is what it is," she said on  The Viall Files  podcast in June 2020. "It's so hard to go through a breakup in the public eye, too...it's so rough. But there's also a lot to be gained and learned from that."

17. Miley came out as pansexual in 2016, telling Variety that she struggled to "understand" her gender and sexuality growing up.

"I always hated the word 'bisexual,' because that's even putting me in a box," she explained to the publication. "I don't ever think about someone being a boy or someone being a girl. Also, my nipple pasties and s--t never felt sexualized to me. My eyes started opening in the fifth or sixth grade. My first relationship in my life was with a chick. I grew up in a very religious Southern family."

18. In 2017, Miley claimed she was the inspiration for Katy Perry 's hit song "I Kissed a Girl."

"I heard her on the radio...they said, 'Who did you write that about?'" Miley told WKTU . "She said: me! I heard it and I screamed, and started freaking out."

19. Miley is the founder of the Happy Hippie Foundation, which works to fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBTQ youth and other vulnerable populations.

20. In her 2009 autobiography, Miley revealed she was born with tachycardia, a non-life-threatening condition that makes her heart beat much faster than the normal rate.

"The type of tachycardia I have isn't dangerous. It won't hurt me, but it does bother me," she wrote. "There is never a time onstage when I'm not thinking about my heart."

21. Miley adopted a vegan diet for six years before switching to a pescatarian lifestyle because her "brain wasn't functioning properly," she explained on   The Joe Rogan Experience in 2020. She revealed that Liam cooked fish for her to eat as her first meal in ages that wasn't entirely plant-based and, she recalled, "I cried, like, for a long time. I cried for the fish...it really hurts me to eat fish."

22. While "Party in the U.S.A." is one of Miley's most successful songs, the singer isn't exactly a fan of the catchy track. "I hate it," she said in a 2019 video . "But for some reason, the people love it."

23. In 2013, an online petition posted  on the White House's official "We the People" website asked President Barack Obama to change the U.S. national anthem from "The Star-Spangled Banner" to "Party in the U.S.A."

24. Initially set to lend her voice to the 2021 animated movie Hotel Transylvania , Miley claimed in a 2019 tweet that she was fired "for buying Liam a penis cake for his birthday and licking it." (She was replaced by fellow former Disney star Selena Gomez .)

25. In 2010, Miley's Disney darling image went up in smoke  when a now-infamous video surfaced of the star taking a hit from a bong. A decade later, Miley hilariously celebrated the scandal's anniversary on Instagram.

"Happy 10 year anniversary to the groundbreaking video of a teenager smoking a bong & saying dumb s--t to their friends," she wrote. "(Not sure the director of this fine film should be considered a 'friend' but...)" She also answered a burning question, writing, "#YesItWasReallySalvia #IfYouFindWeedThatDoesThisToYouSHARE."

26. In a 2019 tweet , Miley alleged the bong incident cost her a huge endorsement contract, writing, "I lost a massive Walmart deal at 17 for ripping a bong."

27. Miley has 74 tattoos and got her first body art when she was 17.

28. Miley has been open about her sobriety journey over the years, discussing her relapse during the pandemic.

"Well, I, like a lot of people, being completely honest...fell off," she said during an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music in 2020. "I would never sit here and go, 'I've been f--king sober,' and I didn't. I fell off and I realized that I now am back on sobriety, two weeks sober, and I feel like I really accepted that time."

She added that she's trying to come to terms with things, noting, "One of the things I've used is 'Don't get furious, get curious.' So don't be mad at yourself, but ask yourself, 'What happened?'"

29. Miley explained that the deaths of musicians like Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain inspired her to reevaluate her relationship with alcohol .

"Twenty-seven to me was a year that I really had to protect myself," she said. "That actually really made me want to get sober, because we've lost so many icons at 27. It's a very pivotal time. You go into that next chapter or this is it for you. I just feel that some of the artists that almost couldn't handle their own power and their own energy and their own force. It's an energy. I, no matter what, was born with that."

30. In March 2022, Miley's plane had to make an emergency landing after it was struck by lightning while she was en route from Colombia to Paraguay for the 2022 Asuncionico music festival. Miley later admitted that she was "a little traumatized" by the incident.

"It was really scary," she told Seth Meyers . "I was in my mom's lap because I was pretty sure it didn't matter about the seatbelts at this point."

Miley Cyrus has seemingly moved on from her hit “Flowers,” as she’s released several new singles since that tune took over the world. While she may be looking ahead, Americans are still loving her year-old smash, and this coming week, the tune will make history.

Billboard reports that when the charts refresh tomorrow (March 19), Cyrus will return to the No. 1 spot on the Adult Contemporary chart. “Flowers” will bounce from the runner-up rung to the throne once again, and when it does, the pop singer will break an all-time record.

“Flowers” is about to become the song with the most weeks at No. 1 across any number of Billboard’s radio charts in history. With one more turn in charge of a radio ranking published by the company, Cyrus’ career-defining smash will have spent a total of 88 frames atop any radio-only tallies in the U.S.

Before this week, Cyrus was tied for this bit of history with The Weeknd. The two both saw one of their hit singles earn a cumulative total of 87 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s radio charts–of which there are more than two dozen. With one more frame atop a radio tally, Cyrus breaks this match with the Canadian R&B and pop crooner.

Cyrus has found the most success with “Flowers” on the Adult Contemporary chart. On that tally, the smash has racked up 39 weeks at No. 1, including this forthcoming frame. The tune broke the record for the most turns atop the radio ranking more than a month ago, and while it stepped down recently, it’s back in the spotlight once more.

“Flowers” was also a huge hit on the all-genre Radio Songs chart, where it held on at No. 1 for 18 weeks. The same cut nearly matched that showing on the Adult Pop Airplay tally, where it lived in first place for 17 weeks. On the even-more-competitive Pop Airplay list, it scored 10 frames in the driver’s seat. “Flowers” was also a four-week ruler on the Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart.

So far, “Flowers” and The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” are the only songs in U.S. history to accumulate 80 weeks (or more) atop Billboard’s radio charts. In third place on this historic ranking is “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber. That track managed 74 weeks starting in 2017 on tallies like the Latin Rhythm Airplay, Latin Airplay, Pop Airplay, and Radio Songs charts.

Dominic Purcell is sending a message about "good women." The Prison Break star took to social media to share a video of wife Tish Cyrus line dancing with her daughter,  Brandi Cyrus , amid ongoing tensions involving Tish's youngest daughter, Noah Cyrus .

Tish and Brandi, who co-host the podcast Sorry We're Stoned With Tish & Brandi Cyrus,  are all smiles in the clip as they show off their country moves to Dasha's 2024 breakup hit, "Austin."

"Can’t keep good women down. I love it!! 😂😂😂❤️❤️❤️," he captioned the post. "My wife Tishy so beautiful, and daughter Brandi goin full country. 😂❤️"

The statement comes after a source  shared with ET  that Tish and Noah had been estranged since the mother of five started dating -- and eventually married -- Purcell.

Another source close to the family then told ET that Noah and Dominic had, in fact, been dating before he got into a relationship with her mother -- but added that Tish, 56, "did not steal" the 54-year-old actor from her 24-year-old daughter.

"Noah stopped seeing Dominic and Tish decided to pursue him and did not tell Noah," the source shared.

Eyebrows were initially raised after Noah and her brother Braison notably  did not attend  Tish and Dominic's August 2023 wedding. ET's source shared that, "Tish was the one who did not invite Noah and Braison to her wedding, and blocked them on Instagram after she pursued Dominic... it was Tish who requested security at her wedding to keep Noah and Braison out."

As for the rest of the family, ET's source said that Miley Cyrus had "no idea" about Noah and Dominic's previous involvement, adding that her role as Tish's maid of honor was not a slight at her father,  Billy Ray Cyrus .

"Miley and Billy Ray are totally fine," the source added.

Tish and Billy Ray were married for 28 years, during which time they split up and filed for divorce three times, reconciling repeatedly until  Tish's final filing in April 2022.  In the filing, it was noted that the two had not lived together since February 2020, and she cited irreconcilable differences as the grounds for their divorce.

Billy Ray also remarried last year,  tying the knot  with singer Firerose in October 2023.

Noah also announced her engagement to fashion designer Pinkus last year.
