What to do in Greece in December

Getting the most out of your trip but with lesser crowds has seldom been more true than in Greece! Here’s your December guide.

travel to greece december

It’s hard to picture Greece without imagining scorching summer days, postcard-perfect islands, and stunning stretches of sandy coastline. This Mediterranean destination is undoubtedly a favorite with summer holidaymakers, but it has a whole lot to offer in the winter, too.

If you like the idea of swapping your shorts and light shirts for cozy layers — and having the country’s most iconic historic sites almost entirely to yourself — you’ll love Greece in winter.

So, go ahead and book that discounted off-season flight, fill your bags with comfy cardigans, and start planning your Mediterranean getaway — here are the best things to do in Greece in December.

Explore mainland Greece

So many visitors spend an all-too-brief day or two in Athens before moving onto the islands, but winter is a fantastic time to explore mainland Greece — especially the country’s modern capital.

With its pleasant winter weather, alluring ancient ruins, and cosmopolitan atmosphere, Athens is a destination that wows visitors year-round, December included! You can spend your time here visiting archaeological treasures, dining at renowned restaurants, and shopping at colorful street markets and chic designer shops. And if the weather takes a turn for the worse, you’re never too far from a world-class museum.

From Athens, you can plan day trips to historically significant destinations like Delphi or Mycenae and Epidaurus. Further north, the seaside city of Thessaloniki and the mesmerizing monasteries of Meteora are well worth a visit in winter, too.

Visit iconic ancient sites (without the tourist hordes)

Want to get stellar photos of Athens’ spectacular ancient ruins without any people around? If you visit in December, that’s actually possible!

While the high season sees the city’s most popular attractions engulfed by a never-ending stream of people, visiting in winter is the complete opposite. This means you won’t have to wait in frustrating queues or fight your way through crowds of tourists and throngs of selfie sticks to get a glimpse of the Parthenon. Enjoyable sightseeing experiences and tourist-free photos are essentially a given!

Fill up on hearty Greek winter staples

Another benefit of visiting Greece in winter? You can try a range of traditional dishes you wouldn’t usually find in the summertime. Much like the country’s most celebrated foods, Greece’s hearty winter staples are fresh, delicious, and big on flavor.

Get your Greek comfort food fix with lahanodolmades (stuffed cabbage leaves served with an egg and lemon sauce), fasolada (bean soup), or giouvarlakia (meatball soup featuring a creamy egg-lemon sauce). Then, wash it all down with the Greek equivalent of mulled wine — AKA rakomelo, a potent drink made with a mix of raki, spices, and honey.

See a different side of the Greek Islands

We’ve all seen photos of the Greek Islands in the height of summer: the sun is always shining, the whitewashed villages are always swoon-worthy, and the beaches always look impossibly idyllic. That’s not quite what the Greek Islands look like in December, but they’re still spectacular nonetheless.

Yes, it’ll be cooler, windier, and much, much quieter compared to the summer months, but if your perfect holiday involves loads of walking and hiking by day and cozying up to a good book and a glass of wine by night, you might just fall in love with the Greek Islands in winter.

Larger islands like Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu are great options for a Greece winter getaway since they’re more likely to retain some life throughout the off-season months. If you’re hoping for sunny weather and pleasant temperatures, Crete is probably your best bet; winters are warmer here due to its southerly location.

Get into the festive spirit, Greek style

If you’re visiting Greece near the Christmas holidays, you’re in for a treat! Cities across the mainland and the islands will be decked out in dazzling decorations, but Athens is an especially festive destination during the most wonderful time of the year.

To get into the holiday spirit in Greece’s capital, admire the giant Christmas tree in Syntagma Square, visit one of the city’s many ice skating rinks, or grab a hot chocolate at Little Kook, a cafe in Psyrri that looks like a Christmas fairy-tale come to life in December.

All the sightseeing and festive fun will probably leave you feeling peckish, so head to the nearest bakery to fill up on traditional Greek holiday sweets. Melomakarona (biscuits flavored with honey, cinnamon, orange, and clove) and kourabiedes (buttery shortbread-type biscuits coated in powdered sugar) are two of the most popular desserts — and they’re both delightfully delicious.

Hit the slopes

Greece is synonymous with sun, sea, and sand, but a large portion of the country is mountainous — which means it’s also a great destination for a ski holiday.

You’ll find top-quality ski facilities throughout Central and Northern Greece , but Parnassos Ski Resort — located two hours north of Athens and near Delphi — is a favorite among winter enthusiasts. The resort offers an impressive network of cross-country trails, 13 lifts, and more than 20 ski runs for all abilities.

Visiting Greece in December: A few things to keep in mind

  • Traveling between the Greek Islands can be trickier in the winter due to reduced ferry services. To avoid any hassle or disappointment, consider sticking to one island rather than island-hopping between two or three.
  • Finding accommodations on the islands can be tricky, too. Many hotels shut down over winter, so be sure to reserve your accommodations in advance (and double-check the heating situation before booking).
  • Athens’ archaeological sites have shorter opening hours in winter. Some of the major attractions may close as early as 3 PM in the off-season, so be sure to plan your sightseeing accordingly.
  • Pack warm layers. The winter weather is typically mild in Greece, but it’s also changeable. Windy, rainy (and sometimes even snowy) conditions are possible, so remember to pack for all seasons.
  • Keep your expectations in check. If you’re hoping to sunbathe and hit all the hottest restaurants and nightlife spots in the Greek Islands in December, you’ll likely end up disappointed. If, on the other hand, you’re prepared for finicky weather, and you’re keen to get a glimpse of authentic Greek life when the tourists have dispersed, you’ll have a fabulous time.

6 Awesome Things to Do in Greece in Winter!

1. explore athens, the ancient capital.

travel to greece december

I love Athens because I can find everything I need in a modern city plus wherever I go, there is some historical monument with centuries or millennia of history behind it. And if this is not the first post of mine you are reading, then you already know what a history buff I am 😀

Greece in December, Christmas Decorations in Syntagma sq in Athens Greece

During Christmas, Athens is in its ‘most wonderful time of the year!’ transformed into a gigantic Christmas Park. The public spaces have impressive decorations, songs, and Greek Christmas cookies available at every bakery and cafe (I always get a couple of extra kilos on Christmas).

Greece in December, Old Athens Plaka cafe

This is the best time to see Athens at its liveliest with sidewalk cafes full of people, restaurants with live music, and a club life that rivals any city in Europe and beyond. And of course, visit the numerous archaeological sites (half-price tickets until late March) and museums. This is a great time to take a private full-day tour of Athens’ most important sites and enjoy your day without the summer crowds.

Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon Evgenia of Travel the Greek Way

Other great tours that I recommend while you are in Athens:

  • Gourmet Food Walking Tour in Athens
  • Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Half-Day
  • Private Biblical Tour of Ancient Corinth
  • Nemea Wine Tour with Oenologists

Where to Stay in Athens

Greece in December, Athens hotel

Athens has great public transit so you can stay in just about any central area and be well-connected. I personally recommend, the centrally located but also quiet spot Tripodon Plaka In the shade of Acropolis by GHH (Self-catering). This is ideal for a group of people up to 6, in the heart of old Athens, Plaka.

I wouldn’t procrastinate booking your Athens accommodation in the last 10 days of December, no matter where you decide to stay. Athens is a popular place to be for the holiday season, and you’ll soon see why!

2. Discover Northern Greece’s Largest City

Thessaloniki (northern greece in december).

Greece in December, Thessaloniki Christmas decorations

I would be lying if I said that Thessaloniki isn’t among my top three favorite cities in Greece. This stunning ancient city, built around the Thermaikos Gulf, is undoubtedly even more beautiful in December and during Christmas.

Landmarks will be covered in Christmas lights, or have lights projected on them. There will be art, music, and dance performances during December that will cheer you up and put you into the festive mood of Thessaloniki.

Some of the best things to do in Thessaloniki are:

  • Indulge in probably the best food tasting in Greece. Go to the Thessaloniki port, find one of many tsipouradika , taverns offering traditional food with tsipouro or ouzo, and have one of the best meals of your life. If you would like to combine sightseeing with food, book this 6-hour food and culture tour

  • Walk by the beautiful long promenade by the sea, stop at the umbrellas site and the 15th century White Tower
  • Go to Ladadika area, a bustling and trendy part of town, close to the port, with gorgeous bars and clubs overlooking the water
  • While you’re in Thessaloniki, you can’t miss the famous  Rotonda one of the oldest and most important buildings of the Roman period (late 3rd and early 4th century AD)

Where to Stay in Thessaloniki

Electra Palace is the best hotel in Thessaloniki. It is a beautiful waterfront location overlooking Aristotelous Square and surrounded by trendy bars and restaurants.

Amazing Day Trips from Thessaloniki are:

  • Travel to Chalkidiki, to Ouranoupoli, and take a cruise around the Holy Mount Athos
  • Visit Vergina, the site of ancient  Aigai  the first capital of Macedon

3. Get Amazed at Prespes Lakes

Greece in Winter,, Prespes Lake sunset

248 km west of Thessaloniki, in the mountainous northwestern Macedonia part of Greece, is located in the National Park of the spectacular 2 Prespes lakes. The Large Prespa Lake, the largest lake in the Balkans, is divided between Greece, Albania, and North Macedonia.

Greece in Winter, Prespes Lake

Prespes Lakes is a virgin natural paradise, a beautiful wetland with snow-covered mountain peaks in December and beech forests. There is a wild abundance of fauna with 260 species of birds and 23 species of fish. Moreover, the coast of the lakes is dotted with gorgeous small settlements and historical monuments of archaeological interest.

Greece in Winter, Agios Achilleios

Some of the best points of interest in Prespes Lake are:

  • Vidronissi island, with one of the largest cormorant colonies in Greece. Access is prohibited, as is any kind of sound. Even the chapel of Agios Georgios remains closed to avoid any disturbance to the cormorants and the silver pelicans
  • Walk across the 650-meter footbridge to the tiny inhabited islet in Small Prespa. Visit the Basilica of Agios Achilleios, of the 10th century

Greece in Winter, Psarades Prespes

  • Walk around the village of Psarades. Here people will tell you that they were born on boats. Fishing and the lake are their life. When I was last in Psarades, it was crispy cold but there was no wind, and that made walking around pleasant. I wandered around the pier and looked into the crystal clear lake where huge fish were swimming. I so look forward to going back to this incredible place!
  • Go to Florina town for its nightlife
  • Drive to Pisoderi ski resort, drink hot chocolate, and ski on its great slopes. Pisoderi is of the 19 organized ski resorts in Greece
  • Discover the traditional Nymfaio village and visit the Arcturos bear sanctuary

Greece in Winter, Evgenia standing at Pisoderi Ski resort

Where Best to Stay in Prespes Lakes:

Dora’s House at Agios Germanos is a beautiful traditional mansion in Prespes Lakes.

White Mountain is a traditional chalet in Pisoderi, close to the ski center (self-catering breakfast materials provided, great for a group of people).

How to reach Prespes Lakes

You can fly to Kastoria airport, which is 65 km from Prespes. Or you can fly to Thessaloniki, and rent a car . Drive from Thessaloniki to Prespes and explore all the beautiful villages in between. Buses connect every corner of Greece and trains from Athens to Thessaloniki. Check at the end of this post about buses and trains in Greece.

4. Discover the Magical Zagorochoria

travel to greece december

Zagorochoria or Zagori may sound like it is one place but actually, it is a cluster of 46 lovely villages! One of my favorite Zagori villages is Monodendri . It is located in the northwestern region of Greece amidst the mountains of Pindus in Epirus. Zagorochoria is one of the favorite winter destinations among Greeks and gets busy in December, especially during Christmas.

Greece in Winter, Voidomatis river in Zagori

There is definitely something magical about spending the Christmas season here. Not only are there  things you can only do in Winter in Zagor i, such as tasting the local Christmas pies, but the landscape looks absolutely gorgeous once fresh snow has fallen.

Greece in Winter, Kalogeriko bridge in Zagori

Zagori is surrounded by Mount Mitsikeli, the Aoos River, and Mount Tymfi on all four sides making hiking one of the best things to do in the area. Honestly, I can’t imagine myself going to this stunning place and not hiking!

Must-do Experiences in Zagorochoria

Greece in Winter, Dragon Lake in Zagori

  • Walk the cobblestone villages full of traditional stone mansions. The most popular villages are Mikro and Megalo Papigko.
  • Hiking at Aoos National Park
  • Hike at the Dragonlake of Tymfi or Smolikas .
  • Try the local cuisine and the famous milk, cheese, pumpkin, or sweet pies.

Where to Stay in Zagorochoria

Greece in Winter, Pantheon hotel in Zagori

This can be a difficult decision to make but with Papigko you can’t be wrong. One of the best hotels in Megalo Papigko is the Pantheon  with stunning views of Mount Astraka.

Greece in Winter, Aberratio hotel in Zagori

Aristi village is another gorgeous option to choose as your base and one of the most developed villages in Zagorochoria. It offers everything the visitor will need and perhaps the best accommodation for someone looking for luxury on their trip! One good example of luxury with stunning views is Aberratio Boutique Hotel .

How To Reach Zagorochoria:  The closest airport to Zagori is that of Ioannina which is located at a distance of about 64 kilometers and takes 1 hour to cover the whole distance. From Ioannina, you should definitely rent a car and drive to Zagori through a picturesque and impressive landscape.

5. Go to Delphi, Meteora & Thermopylae

Greece in Winter, Snowy Meteora

If you are planning to visit Greece in December then you must visit the UNESCO sites of Delphi and Meteora , so beautiful in winter , especially if you happen to see them covered in snow. Delphi and Meteora involve uphill walking and stair climbing with no trees or shade, so it is much easier to do so in the cold weather rather than at 35 C during summer.

Delphi Oracle Apollo Temple ruins in Greece

If you will be traveling from Athens with a rental car then you can make this a fantastic road trip with stops along the way:

Some of the must-sees in your road trip are:

  • Livadia town and the area with the small waterfalls (Krya Nera) for a morning coffee
  • The UNESCO Monastery of Osios Loukas near Distomo
  • Arachova village, 10 km from Delphi Archaeological site
  • You can go skiing to the largest and best-organized ski resort in Greece, Parnassos Mt (where Delphi lies)
  • Stop at Thermopylae, the strategic place where in 480 BC Thermopylae was the place where the Greek army defeated the huge Persian army. Visit the Thermopylae’s Innovative Centre of Historical Information
  • Drive all the way to Kalambaka and Meteora Monasteries

If you don’t like driving in winter you should better book one of the best-reviewed tours in GetYourGuide like a 2-day tour to Delphi and Meteora or Delphi and Meteora: 3-Day Tour from Athens .

6. Indulge in Argosaronic Island-Hopping

hydra island port

Winter is the best time to really discover the Greek islands, experiencing the true magic behind the hustle and bustle of summer. The Argosaronic islands are perfect for a getaway from wintry Athens are they are so close and lively, especially on weekends. There are seven islands in the Argosaronic group but the most lively ones are Hydra, Poros, and Aegina.

Tip: Book your ferries at the last minute, to make sure that the weather allows the ferries to run to the islands

Hydra Island

Classical mansions in Hydra Island

Hydra Island in winter will have a rough sea, impressive winter landscapes, and few inhabitants who retreat to their homes as time passes. But you should not be discouraged. This is your chance to stroll through its magnificent alleys in peace, take photos of the many stray cats (neutered mainly by the local group), enter a traditional cafe (Kafenio), and socialize with the locals drinking Greek coffee.

Greece in Winter, Traditional kafe in Greece

I always take Greek coffee with some sugar as it is a bit strong, although I drink my filter coffee black. Go to the taverns that only the locals eat and feel like a real Greek. The ferry to Hydra will take you in about 1.5-2 hours, depending on the boat you will book.

Want to know more about Hydra? Read here a detailed post on what to do on Hydra Island .

Poros Island

travel to greece december

Poros is another favorite island of mine. You can hike the route that leads to the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, to the remains of the Poseidon Sanctuary, or any of the countless paths to discover nature. Don’t miss climbing the Clock Tower in Poros town to see a panoramic view of Poros island.

Greece in Winter, Lemon forest in Poros

Poros in winter can be toured in a day. So if you have time left, it’s worth stopping by Galatas to visit the famous Lemon Forest. It may not have the colors of spring, but the walk will certainly fascinate you. The ferry to Poros will take you in about 1- 2,5 hours, depending on the boat you will book.

Read here my detailed post on Poros Island.

Aegina Island

travel to greece december

Aegina is an island so close to Piraeus ( ferries take you there in 40 minutes) that you can visit it even every weekend in December and it is quite lively in winter for exactly that reason. This means you have options for coffee, food, and shopping from traditional grocery stores.

travel to greece december

Aegina is an amazing island for hiking to areas with great archaeological interest (Temple of Athena Aphaia, site of Kolona, Paleochora), large Greek Orthodox monasteries, and centuries-old olive groves. You may also have heard that Aegina produces very tasty pistachios that you can buy from any of the shops on the island.

Weather in Greece in December

Generally speaking, December will be cold with rainy and dark grey days. The northern you go to Greece the colder it will be, with some snow on the highest mountains and villages. Northern Greece is significantly colder, requiring gloves and maybe even a woolen hat.

But not every day will be like that. We also get crisp sunny days that can be crystal clear, with blue skies, and delightfully mild temperatures. The temperatures in Athens reach an average high of 15 C while in Thessaloniki will be around 12C.

FAQ: How to Drive in Greece in Winter

Greece in Winter, car driving in snowy Greece

  • Always carry chains for your tires, you never know when the next crazy blizzard will find you
  • Most of the country is connected by a highway system that uses tolls – open all year through. However, smaller roads in the mountains might be closed due to heavy snow
  • Belts are mandatory and you get a huge fine if you haven’t fastened them up
  • Young children should always be kept in their special seats, fastened, in the back seat. Children under 10 are not allowed in the front seat
  • Driving and talking on the phone also can give you a gigantic fine, use hands-free options
  • It’s illegal to drive with a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.05%
  • The middle lane of a 3-lane highway is used for overtaking – this is different from most places in the world where it is the outside lane
  • The high-speed roads are in excellent condition. When you get off the main highways, the roads get significantly smaller, and as all the ski resorts are on mountains, they may look a tad intimidating
  • All the ski resorts in Greece have parking places and they keep the roads clear from too much snow or add some salt to make them less slippery
  • Read here some regulations with regard to vehicles in Greece

FAQ: What to wear in Greece in December

travel to greece december

  • Good walking shoes for exploring ruins and walking along cobblestone streets (spike heels at historic sites are forbidden because they can damage the ancient areas)
  • Appropriate thick socks
  • Scarf, knit hat , and gloves
  • Layers: a long-sleeved shirt, jumpers, and a medium-sized winter coat will suffice unless you go hiking in the mountains with a lot of snow and ice. Then you will need a good hiking parka.

December in Greece: Weather and Event Guide

travel to greece december

Kitti Boonnitrod/Getty Images

If you're planning on spending the holiday season in Greece this December, you'll be happy to find low hotel rates and fewer crowds, but you may be wondering what winter is like in this famously sunny destination. If you're seeking a break from the cold, you'll find mild, but not warm, weather in most parts of the country.

It probably won't be warm enough to enjoy the beaches, but it's still nice enough to explore the ruins and beautiful islands and coastline. Plus, traveling in December offers the added bonus of experiencing the Christmas season in Greece. And even if you don't visit the mountains seeing them topped with snow is quite the sight.

December Weather in Greece

Across Greece, the average temperatures in December can reach highs of 57 Fahrenheit (14 Celsius) and lows of 43 F (6 C). It differs from city to city and also can vary drastically depending on if you are traveling to the mainland or among the islands. Generally, both are cold and rainy, but some islands like Crete and Rhodes, which are more south, are sunnier.

You can go skiing if you take a trip to the mountains. For resort towns like Aráchova and Kalavryta, December is still pretty early in the season, but you might get lucky with some fresh snow. Greece is pretty dry year-round, but December is one of the rainier months. It may not be the best month to visit the Greek beaches, but the temperature is still mild and comfortable, especially when compared to other countries in northern Europe.

What to Pack

With mild temperatures throughout the month, you probably won't need to pack your heavy winter gear unless you are planning on getting outdoorsy in the mountains. However, the temperatures are on the cooler side in December so make sure you pack long pants, sweaters, and warm jacket. Remember, it will get cold at night, so you may want to bring a scarf and hat.

December Events in Greece

In December, there's a lot going on in the lead up to Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. In comparison with most Western European countries , Greece's celebration is solemn and moving. It's a time for faith and family, with blissfully few of the commercial trappings visitors are accustomed to seeing elsewhere.

There will usually be a small travel crunch just before Christmas and just after January 1 and again after January 6, as some Greeks go home for the holidays and then return to Athens. Note that many businesses, sites, and museums will close irregularly through the holiday season and especially during celebration days, for which every town has their local traditions.

  • The feast of St. Nikolaos is on December 6, which is when many Greeks exchange gifts.
  • In Athens, Syntagma Square  (as well as Kotzia and Klefthmono) will be decorated with ornaments made by schoolchildren in December.
  • Up in Florina, a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Thessaloniki, December 23 and 24 you can see the traditional holiday Bonfire Festival.
  • On the island of Chios on New Yer's Eve, ship models are created and carried around by groups of fishermen singing songs.
  • On New Year's Eve, look for a free city-sponsored concert and fireworks.

There are very few tourists going around Greece after October. Take advantage of the reduced prices and the fact there are virtually no crowds or queues to discover some of the most beautiful spots around Greece. You will not be disappointed.

In December, you can expect to see snow in the mountains!

In years past, getting a white Christmas was pretty common around Greece. However, call it the changes of the seasons, global warming or some other phenomenon but there has been a shift in when the cold winter front sets in now and it is not until January. Nevertheless, early December can be blessed with blue skies and mild days that are perfect for sightseeing and exploring. The higher altitude destinations and most of the islands, especially those of the Northern Aegean , are visited by strong winds and rain so a good waterproof jacket will be needed. In general, you should pack for a cold winters day with plenty of lighter layers to accommodate those warmer days, fingers crossed!

The islands are considerably warmer but can be hit hard by winds so come prepared.

The type of traveler who enjoys Greece in December is after a different view or perspective on this popular destination. You will find a limited number of organized tours to the top tourist destinations such as Mykonos , Santorini or Crete but do not let that hold you back from experiencing Greece in the off-season. All it takes is a little bit of planning or the free-spirit of a solo traveller who dares to go at it alone.

❣️ We can help! Our passion is to share this wondrous and storied land, both the known and the not-so-known, with you. For an itinerary plan or someone to guide you through Greece solo, with your family or friends, we can help you explore the hidden paradise you have always dreamed of.

Culture enthusiasts, history buffs and anybody that hates to wait to get into museums. Does it matter if it is raining or if the wind is howling if you are warm inside with a good book learning more about Greek myths or the Peloponnesian War? No, it doesn’t. Athens and Thessaloniki are major cultural hubs that when combined offer visitors a glimpse into Ancient Greece the Byzantine Empire, the Roman Empire or all three, depending on where your interests lie. Since December is a quieter month, arriving in the off-season means you get to slowly make your way through museums and galleries that interest you, discuss at length with archaeologists, tour guides and historians that are also on their off-season and thus considerably more relaxed and take better photos of the sites.

Palaios Panteleimonas

This is a relatively unknown spot on the slopes of Mount Olympus at an altitude of 700 meters. It is a traditional settlement that took its name from the church of Saint Panteleimon. Stone houses, cobbled streets and the smell of firewood coming through the chimneys are the things that instantly come to mind about this charming little village. There is no need to remember addresses because you will have to walk around the whole place eventually.

If you are a fan of good food and relaxation, this is the best spot for an extended romantic weekend. Palaios, which means old, Panteleimonas is a small village but don’t worry about running out of things to do. There are mountain or beach excursions depending on your mood, charming sweet-smelling cafes and some amazing restaurants where meat is king so come prepared to taste the local delicacies of kontosouvli and kokkinisto, meaning red. The latter is usually a variation of braised beef or other meat in a tomato-based sauce.

While an isolated and small village, Palaios Panteleimonas has a lot of passionate young people that have chosen to base themselves there and focus on the development of the area. The shops are well kept and tastefully decorated, most people describe this village as walking through a museum, and there is a great variety of high-quality local produce available like teas, local herbs, honey, liqueurs, tsipouro, handmade soaps and souvenirs for purchase.

Meteora is a complex of monasteries in the Northern part of Greece that can be described as magnificent and awe-inspiring. A spiritual destination if you so wish it to be, Meteora combines its impressive landscape with seven monasteries perched on top of huge boulder rocks that were built in the 14th century by monks. The inaccessible terrain became a sanctuary for practitioners of the Orthodox faith and their importance has been recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.

There is no telling how the weather will be in Meteora in December. I have experienced blue skies and warm days as well as heavy snow. Both settings offer a different experience. While visiting at least one of the monasteries to learn more about the history and religious significance of the area is a must, do not think that this destination is only for the faithful. You can spend your time hiking, exploring the city of Kalabaka, dining on hearty lamb stew dishes, sampling the local wine and discovering hidden caves.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Le’ts explore some of your December in Greece options for events and festivals all around the country.

All-around Greece

25th December – When we talk about celebrating Christmas the Greek way, we are talking about the two weeks between Christmas Eve and the day of the Epiphany on the 6 th of January . One of the ways you know Christmas has arrived is the desserts that pile on storefronts and penetrate your senses everywhere you turn. Think about honey cookies ( melomakarona ), almond cookies ( kourabiedes ) and of course christ-bread or christopsomo which is decorated with a cross and served with dinner.

31st December – New Year’s Eve in Greece can be a pretty standard affair to that of the rest of the world. Yet, if you get the chance to attend New Year’s Eve dinner with a Greek family you might observe a few differences. For starters, this is the day Saint Basil arrives with his presents so if there are children around they will be waiting for Santa. Secondly, after the clock strikes midnight the Vasilopita (Basil’s cake) is cut. This is a special cake containing a coin that if you are lucky to receive you get wishes of health and prosperity for the whole year. After the family has celebrated together, the kids and those partial to a bit of partying are able to go celebrate the rest of the night away with their friends.

Location Specific Events

1st December – 4th January Drama Oneiroupoli – For more than 16 years, Oneiroupoli, meaning dream city, has been enchanting young and old with its colourful and expansive Christmas decorations that spread around this huge public park. Think countless events, concerts and activities in a magical location that is worth making the trip to northern Greece for.

Chios New Year’s Eve Ships – If you happen to be outside on the night of the 31st of December on the island of Chios, you will be witness to a beloved tradition of the island people, the Santa Ships. Teams of people that have worked hard all year carry model ships of sometimes 6 or 7 meters (usually military) around the town and end up in the city square where the best ones are awarded. What is less obvious, is the songs, carols, blessings, jokes and satirical comments that accompany this parade. These are just as much worked on as the actual construction of the ship, with the older and more experienced members of the community offering their playful couplets.

This tradition has unfortunately dwindled in recent years, with only four teams participating in the last two years, compared to the twenty or more that used to before.

☞ Related: South Chios Island in Greece

We talked about the weather in Greece in December a bit at the start already. Depending on location, altitude and luck you might get a sunny winters day or a bit of rain and wind.

Athens has a mellow average temperature of 8-15 degrees and you can expect at least 6 days of rain in the duration of the month.

The capital of the north, Thessaloniki , has a similar amount of rain but lower temperatures of 11 C to 2 C

On a good day in Crete , the temperature can go as high as 20 C but lows of 10 C are still very much expected.

Weather in Athens in the Winter Months

Traditionally, November marks the beginning of Athens’ winter season. It’s during this time that the weather transitions from the warm days of autumn to more mild temperatures.

This is my favorite time for making day trips or exploring the city center.

A sunset sky with empty table and chairs in December in Athens

My experience in November in Athens is generally pleasant, with an average high temperature that’s comfortable for walking around ancient sites like the Acropolis Museum.

However, days of rain do increase , and they can feel like they come out of nowhere. I’d recommend packing the umbrella.

If you are stuck on a rainy day, The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is a great indoor option.

Let’s call December the magical month in Athens ! Mainly due to the Christmas holidays.

Not considered the coldest month , but with the average temperature dipping, you’ll need some warm clothes.

An old church on a sunny day in Athens

Expect a fair share of sunny days, which make for beautiful sunsets over ancient Greece’s landmarks.

If you’re lucky, you might even catch some early morning hours when the city is quieter.

The simple Christmas market at Syntagma Square has become the best part of the city center, offering a variety of holiday treats and crafts.

January is the coldest month in Athens but don’t let that stop you from visiting. I am going to bet it still features mild temperatures compared to other European cities .

Days of rain are common, but so are sunny days, making for a diverse weather experience.

Rainy day in Athens in December with the view of the Acropolis in the distance

New Year’s Day celebrations provide an unforgettable experience, especially if you’re in the city centre near the Greek National Opera.

Due to the relative humidity and dew point , you might find the air to be crisper, but still comfortable for walking around.

February is similar to January, though it’s often considered the wettest month of the year . Rainy days are more frequent, but don’t let that deter you.

The Acropolis Museum and Benaki Museum are excellent indoor venues to explore Athens’ rich history.

Neoclassical style church in Athens in December

Daytime temperatures are moderate, and visiting places like Lycabettus Hill offers a unique vantage point of the city, particularly during the earliest sunset times of the year.

As winter starts to wrap up , March brings back more pleasant temperatures and longer daylight hours.

The city starts gearing up for the high-traffic summer months, but big crowds are still at bay.

Empty Streets of Athens in December

This makes March a great time for a winter visit, especially if you’re interested in a guided tour of ancient sites or a small boat trip around the Saronic Gulf.

Weather stations report an increase in hours of sunshine, making it a great option for outdoor activities.

So, from November to March, Athens offers a range of weather conditions that can suit a variety of travel plans.

Each month has its own charm, making winter a good time of the year to appreciate the city’s many facets, from its ancient history to its vibrant modern life.

Benefits of Visiting in December

Another benefit of the Christmas season is fewer crowds at key tourist attractions.

Whether it’s the Acropolis of Athens or the Ancient Agora, you can enjoy these historical sites without the summer rush.

Museums like the National Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Cycladic Art are quieter this time of year as well, giving you the space to appreciate the artifacts and exhibitions at your own pace.

The outside of the National Museum on a cloudy day in Athens in December

New Year’s Eve is another event to look forward to, with festivities usually culminating in an impressive fireworks display that illuminates the entire city.

Between the milder weather, festive events, and reduced crowds at archaeological sites and museums, the Christmas season is a unique and wonderful time to truly enjoy all that Athens has to offer.

Can Visit the Greek Islands in December?

While the larger islands such as Crete , Rhodes , and Naxos are all open year-round, they aren’t going to be warm, and many shops will be closed.

If you are dead set on visiting a Greek Island then I would look into the ferry to Crete or potentially flights. Crete would be the best place to visit in December.

Hotel Prices in In December

The best part about visiting Athens in December is the reduced accommodation prices .

Since Athens is not the go-to destination for many travelers in Europe in December you can get a steal.

A fancy Athens Hotel Lobby in December with a large christimas tree

When I first visited Athens in the winter I took advantage of the low room rates at the Coco Mat Athens BC .

The only downside was that the rooftop pool was not open . But the comfortable, and stylish hotel was finally in my price range!

December Packing Guide For Athens

1. warm clothing.

  • Pack layers, including sweaters, long-sleeve shirts , and a warm jacket. December in Athens can be chilly, especially in the evenings, but don’t go overboard. It should be very mild.

2. Waterproof Jacket

  • It is not a guarantee, but it could rain in December! So to be prepared, bring a waterproof or water-resistant jacket . This should keep you dry during occasional rain showers.

3. Comfortable Shoes

  • This is an important one with how much walking is involved in Athens. Pack your most comfortable walking shoes for exploring historical sites and walking on uneven terrain.

4. Scarf and Hat

  • Because these don’t take up much space, I’d say pack them. There is a good chance you don’t need a scarf and hat . But on the off chance it’s very cold, they will keep you warm and protect against the wind.

5. Umbrella

  • Sad to say, but you should pack a compact umbrella to shield yourself from rain, which is more frequent in December.

6. Adapter and Converter

  • A general travel necessary is a power adapter . Greece uses Type C and Type F electrical outlets, so bring the appropriate adapter and converter if needed for your electronic devices.

7. Travel Essentials

  • Just a reminder and forget me not- pack your valid passport, travel insurance, and any necessary medications.

8. Holiday Attire:

  • This one is very optional. But If you plan to participate in holiday festivities, it could be fun to have an ugly Christmas sweater . Or consider packing some dressier clothing for special occasions.

9. Daypack or Tote Bag:

  • Making a day trip on your visit to Athens? A small daypack or tote bag can be handy for carrying essentials while exploring the city.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Athens in Winter

The Best Places to Visit in Greece in December

For December, unless you want to ski, we recommend going to the warmer places in Greece with great historical sites and museums such as Athens where you will be able to spend time strolling and relaxing and enjoying the festive celebrations with lower prices and less crowding.

1. Athens — Tour the Archeological and Historical Highlights, Museums, City Streets, and Parks

Though there is some rainfall about half the days of December, Athens usually has suitable weather for walking and touring. The restaurants and cafés are kept at invitingly warm temperatures where you can warm up, and when there is sunshine, there is pleasant weather for excursions. The average high is 14ºC (57ºF).

By the 10th of December, the Athenians light up their city. They decorate grandly and colorfully for the Christmas holidays. There are daily public concerts at Syntagma Square close to the Acropolis and the Agora.

Mount Lycabettus is downtown. You could walk up for some exercise and the best scenic vantage point in Athens. The museums and the Acropolis have shorter hours and may close by 5 pm or earlier.

2. Crete — Hike and Enjoy the Fresh Green Beauty in December

Crete is recommended since it stays warmer than the rest of Greece in December since it is the southernmost part of Greece and the largest island of Greece, bigger than the state of Delaware. It has diverse places of interest suited for the mild temperatures.

The temperatures range from 17°C (63°F) to 11°C (52°F) at night. The sea temperature averages 18°C (64°F) which is too cold for swimming, but doable with a wetsuit for watersports.

There are many Christmas festivities including Christmas music, and in the smaller villages there are more traditional Orthodox traditions. Eating all the wonderful traditional holiday foods is one of the highlights. Room rates may be 50% of the summer rates. Many businesses and most resorts close.

3. Kefalonia — Enjoy a Family Vacation

Kefalonia is suggested for family vacations since there are so many things for families to do together. It is the biggest of the Ionian Islands on the western side of Greece. Average highs are 16°C (61°F), and the lows are 10°C (50°F).

There are castles, monasteries, and an underground lake. There is also a national park with a mountain that is 1,628 m (5,341 feet) tall. Flights are the best way to travel there, which from Athens take an hour.

4. Parnassos — Ski during the Holidays

If you want have a white Christmas, and also have a chance to ski if the conditions are right, you could go to Parnassos. It is the largest and best equipped ski resort in Greece with 13 lifts, three runs for beginners, seven ski routes, and ten trails.

The ski resort has good slopes for beginners and intermediate skiers and is also popular since there are good restaurants and cafés in the area. It is only a 2½ hours' drive from Athens, so could be a place to go for a day excursion.

Highlights nearby: Delphi is a famous archeological site about 75 minutes away. For coastal scenery and fine Greek-style seafood, Galaxdi is a fishing village and is less than two hours away.

5. Rhodes — Enjoy Warmer Weather, See the Ancient Places, and Hike in Nature

In December, the famous travel destination of Rhodes is also one of the warmest highlights of Greece since it is one of the southernmost big islands. Daily temperatures range from about 16°C (61°F) to lows of 12°C (53°F).

The island is one of the few places where you could still enjoy the beach and watersports without being too chilled. There are very good beaches.

In 2023, fires burned some of the southern resort areas, but the northern shore was unaffected. The historical highlights were not affected such as the Acropolis of Lindos, the Old Town that preserves medieval architecture, and the Gothic castle of the Knights of Rhodes. Flights from Athens take an hour.

Low Tourism Season: Touring Advice for January

Greece seems more tranquil, peaceful, and dreamy in winter, and the excitement of winter adds some spicy excitement. So, it is a good time to relax and enjoy the excellent Greek food and experience the unique culture.

As you tour, you will have more time to contemplate history and life in general. You will also have more time to eat. The Greeks are experts at mixing natural spices in their traditional Christmas cakes, pastries, and healthy beverages. There are bargain prices for hotels and flights.

Closures: Some popular Greek islands are virtually closed down during winter. Many hotels and restaurants close for their winter vacations.

Shorter hours: The archaeological sites have shorter hours in January than in the summer. Most major sites such as the Parthenon close at 3 pm since there is less daylight, and minor sites might not open. Many museums close earlier too, even by 3:30 p.m.

Public holidays in December:

Christmas — December 25 and 26 each year are Greece's Christmas public holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Museums, archeological places, businesses, public buildings, and even some transportation services are closed. It is considered a very important holiday. On the 24th, children sing Christmas carols in the streets.

December 31, New Year's Eve , is not a national public holiday. Athens and many other places have midnight fireworks. Greeks give gifts, reunite with family and friends, party, enjoy games and prepare the Feast of Saint Basil's that is a major Orthodox holiday on January 1.

Low Tourism Season: Touring Advice for December

Tourism is low, and the prices for hotel rooms decline to as much as 50% of the peak prices of July and August. The exception is during the Christmas – New Year period. So, you might plan on extended stays while the weather is mild and dine on Greece's more natural, healthier and tastier cuisine with lots of seafood dishes in December.

What to Wear in December

You will need a coat or thick jacket for comfort, and if you are planning to go to the mountains or to the north of Greece, take winter (or skiing) clothing. Since there are rainy days, have an umbrella or poncho handy.

Shoes: Since it is rainier, wear sturdy shoes with good traction for the nature trails, the cobbled stone streets and archeological sites to prevent slips and wet feet.

Wetsuits: The average sea temperature is about 18°C (64°F) at most of Greece's beach highlights in December. This is too cold for swimming for most people without a wetsuit.

Is Greece Worth Visiting In Winter?

Greece With KIds - What to do in Greece with kids - Athens - Parthenon, Akropolis

So, when is winter in Greece? The months of December through February make up the winter season in Greece.

Winter in Greece is certainly not the country’s popular season  – that award goes to July and August.

Visiting Greece in winter, you will find that  the beaches are quiet, the islands are a little deserted, and the weather is undoubtedly chillier. But that doesn’t make it a wrong time to visit. In fact, in many ways, winter is the best time to experience this ancient nation’s culture, history, and versatility.

With many incredible attractions and destinations, Greece has much to offer the winter traveler . Fewer tourists mean shorter queues to get into major attractions, less crowded restaurants, and better pricing and travel deals to take advantage of.

Whatever kind of vacation you’re looking for, a Greece winter is a brilliant time to visit.

Greece Winter Weather

How To Visit The Greek Islands From Turkey In One Day - Rhodes, Lindos bay

You may be wondering if it gets cold in Greece. Compared to most European countries , the weather in Greece has mild winters and is pleasant. So, a trip to southern Greece is the perfect option if you want to spend a week away from the biting cold.

If milder temperatures are what you’re after, southern Greece is not only mild but frequently quite warm in the winter. You’ll definitely want to pack a pair of shorts for the sunniest days. In January or February, Greece does not offer laze-on-the-beach weather. Still, it is a great time to explore the country’s many ancient sites without dripping with sweat and being surrounded by other over-enthusiastic tourists.

Winter is Greece’s rainy season, so pack a rain jacket and some sturdy waterproof shoes , particularly if you plan hiking. The northern and mountainous regions are a good deal colder than the southern lowlands. If you’re keen on snowy peaks, January and February are the coldest months. And if you head to the mountains, you’ll likely find snow there.

We’ve dedicated a whole post on what to pack for Greece travel for those seeking more inspiration.

Greece In December – What Is A Greek Christmas Like?

Wondering if you should spend your Christmas in Greece ? For anyone interested in cultural traditions and incredible cuisine , you can’t go wrong with this decision.

How is the weather in Greece in December? As mentioned above, December weather in Greece can be surprisingly mild. Although the mountains may have snow and cold weather, southern Greece and the Greek islands boast pretty comfy weather. Visiting Athens in December, Crete in winter, or Paros in winter are all excellent choices for a warmer Christmas holiday .

Best things to do in greece in winter.

Winter in Greece - Small town Oia on Santorini

There is so much to enjoy during a Greek winter. In winter, the colder (relatively speaking) Greek weather has some unique attractions and activities, making it an excellent time to explore.

These are our top picks for what to do in Greece in winter.

1. Go Museum-Hopping In Athens

Christmas in Greece - Sintagma Square

There are some incredible things to do in Athens , but the famous ancient city’s top draws are the historic sites and the world-class museums. The best thing about visiting Greece in the winter is that the small crowds make museum-hopping so much easier and more enjoyable.

Two of the best museums in Athens are the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum. Both showcase phenomenal historical artifacts from up to eight thousand years ago! If you’ve ever seen ancient Greek art in your history textbooks, chances are you’ll find it here.

The Byzantine and Christian Museum and Benaki Museum are two other fantastic options for those spending more than a weekend in Athens. You’ll learn so much about Greek history and culture and see some mind-boggling things, too. All with hardly anyone around you, which museum lovers will confirm, really elevates the experience.

2. Go Skiing In Arachova

Greece may not be well-known for its skiing , but the Hellenic country has some great options. The mountain town of Arachova is close to Mount Parnassos, which has some excellent ski slopes for all skill levels.

While we don’t recommend choosing Greece over the more famous destinations for a ski holiday, it is lovely to add to your Greek winter vacation. Not only can you ski here, but Arachova also offers world-class resorts and spas, fantastic nightlife , and some genuinely once-in-a-lifetime views.

3. See Meteora In Snow

Winter in Greece - View of the mountains and monasteries of Meteora

If you’re visiting Greece in January or February, you have a chance of spotting Meteora surrounded by snow. This one-of-a-kind monastery is magical in all conditions. The snow adds another layer to the beauty.

Throughout winter, snow or none, Meteora is a brilliant destination. The monastery complex is built on six natural pillars and massive boulders, making for a unique destination. The surrounding landscape is lush and green in winter, benefitting from the seasonal rains and significantly reduced crowds .

The structures were initially built so the monks could live in isolation, far from civilization and nearly inaccessible to outsiders. Today, the monastery is one of the best places to visit in Greece in November, December, January, and throughout the entire year really.

4. Explore Mount Pelion From Volos

Base yourself in the magnificent city of Volos, only 27 kilometers from one of Greece’s most famous ski centers: Mount Pelion (1500 m). Probably among the most stunning landscapes in Greece, Mount Pelion Ski Center is a year-round destination that you can also visit, even if skiing is not one of your interests.

As a matter of fact, besides forests, you will find spectacular beaches , quaint mountain villages, and — of course — the renowned Mount Pelion.

The ski center features five ski slopes, four lifts, and a chalet with restaurants, cafes, and accommodations. There is also a ski and snowboard school.

In the nearby area, visitors can explore the magnificent city of Volos, which is only 27 kilometers from the ski resort.

5. Get Off The Beaten Path In Zagorochoria

An inspiring region about a 5-hour drive from Athens , the area is an outstanding winter destination featuring the most incredibly gorgeous mountain villages you could ever imagine.

Located in the region of Epirus, on the northwestern side of Greece, the local villages boast picture-perfect stone houses with grey-tiled roofs on charming narrow alleys.

Still somewhat virgin to international tourism, Zagorochoria can quickly become your favorite European winter destination if you are looking for an off-the-beaten-track place to discover.

6. Go To The Christmas Markets Of Thessaloniki

Christmas In Thessaloniki - Aristotelous Square

Located in northern Greece, about a five-hour drive from Athens, this important city is a great winter destination and the best place in the country to explore its Christmas markets and other events related to the merry season.

As is the tradition in Christmas Markets , you will find an assortment of Christmas trinkets and souvenirs, tree decorations, lights, and delicious treats — do not forget that Thessaloniki has the reputation of being the city that produces the best sweets and desserts in the country!

7. Take A Hiking Trip Through The Wild Mountain Landscapes

The mainland of Greece is covered with mountainous hiking trails . Most are not for the faint of heart and can take days or even weeks to complete. They’ll be some of the most memorable days of your life, but you do need to have quite a high fitness level.

Hike along a scenic riverside path on the Samaria Gorge Trail, which takes you through Byzantine ruins and spectacular nature. Or find one of the many trails on beautiful Mount Athos.

For those keen on a multi-day hike, the seventy-five-kilometer Menalon trail will take you through the heart of the Peloponnese . Explore charming mountain villages, deep canyons, and striking mountains. It should take you around three days to complete, with time to stop and enjoy your surroundings.

8. Head To Nymfaio, The Capital Of Silversmithing

Nymfaio

Regarding mountain villages, you should include Nymfaio in your itinerary. The village, famed for its silversmithing industry and local warriors, is a pretty town in Western Macedonia with a rich history. Founded by Vlach travelers in the 14th century, Nymfaio quickly became known for its skillful smiths.

The town of Nymfaio features many museums where visitors can see religious silverware, jewelry, and gold artifacts made by the town’s master artisans. Besides its cultural riches, Nymfaio has a wealth of architectural and natural beauty. Visitors can bask in the picturesque scenery from the village’s old houses or wander through the scenic streets.

There is also an environmental protection center run by the Greek ecological organization Environmental Centre ARCTUROS; at the center, visitors can see rescued bears and wolves that are too weak to survive by themselves.

9. Taste Greece’s Unique Winter Cuisine

Christmas in Greece - Homemade Hot Pork Tenderloin

Greece is particularly well-known for its summer foods. Greek salads, light meals, and rich yogurts with berries are all country staples. But the food goes through a substantial shift when the weather gets chilly.

Expect meatball and bean soups, hearty stews, stuffed cabbage leaves , and oven roasts. Greek winter food is healthy and delicious, guaranteed to warm you up and keep your energy high.

If you’re visiting Greece in December, try traditional Christmas treats like spinach, cheese pies, and roast pork. Of course, Greek coffee with a slice of baklava is the perfect way to end any summer or winter meal. But its rich flavor is best suited to winter .

10. Swim In Thermal Lake Vouliagmeni

Lake Vouliagmeni is just outside of Athens , making for a great day trip from the city. It’s a beautiful, brackish lake with pleasant temperatures at any time of year. The minerals in the large lake include potassium, ammonium, calcium, and iodine. Together, the water’s minerals relieve several health issues, including bone and muscle stresses, eczema, and arthritis.

The lake also has a happy doctor fish population, which provides natural (and ticklish) exfoliation. The spa facilities also include sunbeds, a restaurant, and nearby accommodation options.

11. Visit The Greek Islands

Ideas For Things To Do In Corfu In Winter For Everyone - Paleokastrisa Resoirt

Modern Greece is most well-known for its gorgeous Greek islands . People come in droves to laze on the beaches, explore wild paradises, and enjoy the laid-back island vibe.

Winter on the Greek Isles is slightly different and may not be your obvious choice, but it should be considered nonetheless. The local population settles back into everyday daily life, and the tourism industry hunkers down till the subsequent summer season. You may find this to be your favorite time to visit the islands .

Get to know the locals, play backgammon, and embrace the late-night cafe culture. Explore the islands , hike, and cycle across the green landscapes. Winter is also when you’ll have some of the best cultural experiences, including live performances and art shows.

If you’re unsure about the weather on the Greek island in December or January, rest assured you’ll be able to enjoy many comfy and sunny days. Although obviously much less warm than summer, winter allows for outdoor activities like sunbathing, which would be drenched in sweat in summer.

Corfu is one of the best options for a Greek winter escape, with a “vibrant local tradition, a beautiful Old Town, and lots to keep you busy. Crete and Lesvos are also terrific options, with mountain villages you can hike between and frequently mild winter weather. Another option that becomes more budget-friendly in the winter is Santorini .

Tip: Do note that most ferry operators and flights connecting the mainland to the Greek Isles operate on a much more reduced schedule during these off-peak winter months. Be sure to plan and book in advance to avoid running into any schedule issues.

  • Island Hopping In Greece

12. Wander The Snowy Streets Of Ioannina

This charming city is the perfect combination – with cobblestone streets, snow-capped mountain peaks, and a serene lake, making for a picturesque winter escape.

From taverns and museums to the city’s famed castle and stunning views, this lovely city has so much to offer.

Don’t forget to take a boat ride across Lake Pamvotis to take in the scenery.

13. Explore Kastoria’s Historical Buildings

Most Beautiful Cities in Greece - Cityscape of Kastoria

Another Greek winter gem, Kastoria, is a crucial mountain settlement close to the Albanian border in West Macedonia. Perched on Lake Orestiada, Kastoria boasts a unique historical collection of ancient Byzantine and Ottoman mansions and buildings with characteristic wooden balconies and over fifty awe-inspiring ancient Byzantine churches, everything surrounded by the impressive mountainous landscapes of the Macedonia region. With a dusting of snow, these buildings become enchanting.

Kastoria is also known for the old stone bridges characteristic of the local architecture; the best known is the arched Bridge of Zouzouli, dating back to 1880. The bridge is about 7 meters high and was built over the waters of a stream carrying the same name.

14. Enjoy Winter Sports In Karpenisi

The city of Karpenisi is located in the valley of the river Karpenisiotis in the southern part of the Pindus Mountains.

This enchanting small town is surrounded by the mountains of Kaliakouda, Helidona, and Timfristos, and it has often been dubbed the small Switzerland of Greece.

The place is a popular tourist destination during the winter months  and is a favorite of locals at Christmas. Yet, its incredible pine tree forests and rugged landscape make it a fantastic destination all year round for those fond of the outdoors.

15. Take In The Alpine Atmosphere Of Metsovo

Metsovo, Greece in winter - pretty cities in Greece

Surrounded by the imposing Pindus mountain range and at about 1200 meters above sea level, Metsovo is not only a beautiful Greek city but also one of the most popular winter destinations in the country. Popular for its gorgeous buildings made of stone, including mansions, monasteries , bridges, cobbled streets, and squares.

The town has managed to preserve its traditional character, remaining home to old traditions. The city offers many cultural events and sports opportunities, as well as cozy tavernas and streets filled with the smells of roasting chestnuts all winter.

Santorini entices couples and honeymooners with its iconic sunsets, colorful clifftop villages, and luxurious suites situated along the volcanic slopes. In December, you can watch the island’s legendary sun dip into the Aegean Sea at places like Oia when it is far quieter.

Far more serene, yet still utterly captivating, Greece’s jewel of the Cyclades weaves romantic charm for two.

Visit Greece in December

December can be an intriguing time to visit Greece, blending a unique blend of cultural charm and festive spirit. While it’s the off-season for tourists, it offers a quieter and more authentic experience. The weather is mild, with temperatures averaging around 10-15°C in major cities, making outdoor explorations comfortable. Athens, adorned with festive lights, exudes a lively ambiance and historical sites like the Acropolis are less crowded. December also marks the start of the Christmas season, with vibrant decorations and markets in cities like Thessaloniki and Athens. You can savour traditional Greek holiday treats and witness local celebrations. However, note that some islands and attractions may have limited services or closures, so it’s advisable to plan your itinerary accordingly. Overall, December allows you to discover Greece’s cultural richness in a more intimate and festive setting.

Greece Weather in December 2024

Greece weather in December

If you are planning on a trip to Greece during December, get ready to experience a transition into its winter season. The weather is generally mild, yet relatively cool, with temperatures ranging from around 10 to 15°C in the mainland and major cities. However, the mountainous regions and northern areas may experience colder temperatures, occasionally dropping to single digits. Rainfall is moderate, with an average of 65-85 mm across the country. Coastal regions and islands may witness slightly higher levels of precipitation.

Days are shorter, providing about 9 hours of daylight on average. The climate lends itself to exploring historical sites, cities, and museums comfortably. Coastal areas, especially Athens, Thessaloniki, and Crete, showcase a festive atmosphere, with Christmas decorations, markets, and cultural events. While December offers a quieter and less crowded experience, it’s essential to be prepared for some closures or reduced services, particularly in more tourist-dependent areas and on certain islands. Overall, it’s an ideal time for those seeking a more authentic Greek experience amid a festive, winter backdrop.

What to Wear in Greece in December 2024?

The weather tends to be cool and relatively mild. To stay comfortable, it’s advisable to pack layers. Start with a medium-weight jacket or coat to keep warm, especially during the evenings when temperatures can dip. Consider bringing sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, and thermal undergarments for added insulation. Pair these with pants, jeans, or long skirts for daytime activities. It’s a good idea to pack both closed-toe shoes, like comfortable walking boots or sneakers, and waterproof footwear as there may be some rain.

Additionally, don’t forget to bring an umbrella and a hat or beanie to keep you dry and warm. Accessorise with scarves and gloves for extra warmth. While coastal areas may have a milder climate, regions with higher altitudes or in the north might require heavier winter apparel. Always check the weather forecast before your trip for more precise packing.

Visitor Arrivals: Is Greece Crowded During December?

Greece a best honeymoon destination in October

Greece is generally not crowded during December, as it’s considered the off-season for tourism. The colder temperatures and the approach of winter deter many tourists from visiting, resulting in fewer crowds at popular attractions and destinations. Major tourist spots, historical sites, and islands are noticeably quieter, offering a more intimate and peaceful experience. Cities like Athens and Thessaloniki may still have a lively atmosphere due to local festivities and Christmas markets, but they are far less crowded compared to the bustling summer months.

Accommodation and flights are often more affordable and readily available. However, popular holiday destinations or ski resorts might see a slight increase in visitors during the Christmas and New Year period. Overall, December is an excellent time to explore Greece for those seeking a tranquil and authentic travel experience.

Capital & islands - Athens, Mykonos, Santorini and Crete

Experience a diverse Greek holiday exploring Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, and Crete. Enjoy daily excursions and the freedom of a rental car in Crete, immersing yourself in rich history, picturesque landscapes, and local charm.

Given that Crete typically conjures images of  beautiful beaches and savouring al fresco sun-downers, December isn’t the most obvious month to visit the island.

But, while Crete’s heat does dial down a few notches in December, heading here during this month can be a rewarding time to visit. That’s especially the case if you’re keen on tranquillity, and are on a budget.

In addition, fewer visitors in Greece during winter mean you’ll be able to book accommodation at lower prices. Plus you won’t have to jostle with crowds when you visit the island’s top historic sites.

Stating the obvious, here, but don’t expect the weather in Crete in December to be anything like the scorching days and balmy evenings you’ll experience during the summer months.

That said, Crete sees some of Greece’s warmest December temperatures. We’re talking a daily average of 15°C.

To increase your chance of slightly warmer weather, head to the south of Crete. Here towns and villages are protected from the colder northerly winds by the island’s central hills.

As for the sea, expect an average temperature of 17°C, so you probably won’t be going for a swim.

December is one of the rainiest months in Greece as a whole. In general, expect unpredictable weather — a mix of clouds and rain showers broken by the sun.

On Crete, on any given day in December, there’s a 42% chance of cloud, with an average of 41mm of rainfall across the month. So, you’ll want to bring a brolly.

Being winter low season, visiting Crete in December means the crowds of peak summer season have long departed. As a result, the cost of flights and accommodation are much lower. Good news if you're on a tight budget.

Just be aware that some resorts and hotels close for the winter season, and airlines and ferry operators typically run reduced services.

On the plus side, while beach resorts may be closed, lots of smaller local hostelries remain open — all the better for a more authentic experience.

What to wear in Crete in December

In many ways, what to wear in Crete in December corresponds with what you might wear on a spring day in the UK.

So, think jumpers, coats and scarves. You’ll also want waterproof outer attire and a brolly. We also recommend bringing some light layers for the warmer, sunnier days.

Planning to get your adventure on (more on that later)? Bring sturdy, comfy footwear for walking and hiking.

Consider renting a car

With December being out of season, you could look into renting your own car to make sure you don’t miss out on exploring the island.

While peak season sees reliable island-wide public transport as a convenient, affordable way to get around, come low season, many services are seriously reduced or have stopped completely.

Walk on the wild side

Cooler temperatures make December a good time to get back to nature and explore Crete’s wonderful, wilder landscapes.

Alongside having a stunning coastline, the island’s interior is something of a paradise for lovers of the great outdoors.

Take your pick from gentle strolls to more challenging hikes. You can also enjoy mountain biking, canyoning and horse-riding adventures.

Explore the Old Town of Chania

The Old Town of Chania is located on the island's western coast. It is one of the most well-preserved and charming old towns in Greece, well-known for its rich history, narrow winding streets and Venetian architecture. Some of the key highlights to visit in Chania are:

  • Venetian Harbor,
  • Turkish Quarter,
  • Agora Marketplace,
  • Chania Archaeological Museum,
  • Etz Hayyim Synagogue,
  • Venetian walls.

Savour Crete Christmas traditions

Through December “Karavaki” — boats festooned in festive lights — can be seen all over Crete, especially in coastal villages.

Paying tribute to the sea, seafarers, and St. Nicholas (patron saint of sailors), they’re sure to put a seasonal spring in your step.

You'll also want to try Crete's traditional Christmas cookies. Cinnamon-spiced and dipped in a honey-and-sugar syrup, melomakarona is the perfect treat to pack for picnics.

Five overlooked corners of Greece to visit in 2024

L ured by sun-kissed beaches on pristine sea-lapped islands , the cultural charms of countless ancient sites and budget-friendly tavernas serving luscious healthy food, some 30 million tourists (roughly three times the country’s population) travel to Greece each year. Hardly surprising, then, that popular destinations like Santorini and Mykonos are chock-a-block during the summer months.

Airlines such as Easyjet and Ryanair are offering an increasing number of direct flights from the UK to lesser-known regions of Greece next year, plus there are plenty of ferry routes linking Greece’s 200-plus inhabited islands. Nevertheless, it’s surprisingly easy to escape the crowds and discover a more authentic side to this country known for its “filoxenia” (friendliness to strangers) – but you need to know where to look.

Whether you long to lounge on Caribbean look-a-like beaches with only goats for company, laze within striking distance of the country’s top sights yet steer clear of the crowds or discover far-flung villages with atmospheric mezedopoleia where tumblers of raki are served up with generous meze snacks, here’s our guide to the five overlooked corners of Greece you need to visit in 2024.

Athenian Riviera

Only a 20-minute tram ride to the Acropolis, but blissfully removed from the angry traffic snarl that plagues Athens ’ jam-packed streets in summer, the Athenian Riviera – dubbed The Hamptons of Greece by locals – makes a perfect base for exploring the country’s capital city.

A heady combination of retro-style architecture, glorious golden sand beaches and chic designer boutiques, this astoundingly little-known 30-kilometre stretch of coastline descending from chic yachties hangout Palaio Faliro to the marble-pillared splendour of Cape Sounion was once a secret haven for celebrities who came here to escape the crowds and paparazzi of Greece’s capital city.

With One&Only Aesthesis opening this year in the ritzy resort of Glyfada, fine-dining restaurants popping up all along the seafront and Greece’s first luxury glamping complex opening in the glitzy resort of Voula, however, this stretch of coastline known to Greeks as the paraliaki, or corniche, is likely to become popular. Go now before everyone else does.

Where to stay

Opening in 2024, Athens Riviera 91 in Voula is the paraliaki’s first luxury glamping resort. From £772 per luxury tent; 91athensriviera.gr .

The Riviera’s beaches, boutiques and cafes are open from early spring to late autumn.

Thessaloniki

Despite a new metro network and a fleet of electric buses due to launch next year – along with a burgeoning food scene that earned it a prestigious Unesco Capital of Gastronomy title in 2021 – Greece’s under-the-radar second city is rarely visited by UK tourists. The backdrop for Victoria Hislop’s award-winning novel The Thread, this Macedonian city (named after the sister of Alexander the Great) is a centuries-old melting pot, which is reflected in a wide range of architectural styles.

With its huge student population, this is also a modern city, where nightlife options range from traditional bouzouki hangouts in the historical Ladadika quarter to lively music venues like Mamalouka , where music lovers of all ages go to party.

Greeks, however, mainly come here for the food: spicy feta dish bouyiourdi or salted cod and garlic dish bakaliaro (best tasted in local-run tavernas like Estrella or Maitre & Margarita ); custard-filled bougatsa made by third-generation pastry maestro Filippos Bantis’ or local wines that can be sampled in state-of-the-art wineries like Domaine Gerovasiliou .

Where to stay

Within easy walking distance of the city’s main sights, Thess residence has 25 serviced apartments. Apartments from £72; thessresidences.com .

With direct flights from the UK, Thessaloniki is an ideal all-year city break destination.

The Maria Callas opus starring Angelina Jolie as the celebrated Greek opera singer and scripted by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight hits cinema screens this year. This often overlooked region in the western Peloponnese is where many of the scenes were filmed, and it’s well worth visiting.

Overlooking a leafy square surrounded by neoclassical mansions, including the 19th-century Apollo Theatre, where Jolie/Callas sings in the film, Pyrgos is renowned for its hole-in-the-wall tavernas ( Opos Palia ; Edeatros) where they dish up huge portions of pork roast gourounopoula, baked lamb and other local specialties.

Within easy reach of Ancient Olympia, site of the original Olympics, this picturesque town is also an easy drive to the pine-fringed beaches of Arkoudi and Glyfa, plus Kaifa’s mineral-rich hot spring baths – surrounded by sweet-scented eucalyptus forests where tortoises hibernate in winter.

Housed in a lovingly renovated post-war winery, Dexamenes is a luxurious resort overlooking one of the region’s loveliest stretches of coastline. A true hidden gem. Rooms from £146; dexamenes.com .

Framed by mighty mount Taygetos, the rugged Mani often sees snow in winter. For balmy weather, this wild region is best visited between June and September.

Astypalea

Known as the “butterfly island” because of its two “wings” of land linked by a narrow peninsula, the remote island of Astypalea has long been overlooked for better-known Dodecanese sisters Rhodes and Kos. Since 2020, however, when the Greek government made a groundbreaking agreement with the Volkswagen Group to transform Astypalea into “a model island for climate-neutral mobility”, this eco-friendly atoll can only be reached by several hours ferry-ride from the surrounding islands. As a result, it is a magnet for travellers seeking peace and quiet.

Electric cars, scooters and e-bikes that can be hired via the island’s designated astyMOVE app silently swish travellers from main town Chora – with its white-painted windmills, medieval castle and alleys lined with craft shops on Mesa Nisi (the inner island) – to a string of deserted coves and remote hiking trails on Exo Nisi (the outer island).

A seven-suite boutique hotel gazing out over a pretty bay towards main town Chora. Saluti da Stampalia’s forward-looking owners have signed Unesco’s Sustainable Travel Pledge . Rooms from £53; salutidastampalia.com

This remote island is rarely crowded, even in the height of summer. For the balmiest weather (and best ferry connections) travel between June and September.

With low cost airline Corendon slated to offer direct flights from the UK to Sitia’s gleaming new airport next year, this far-flung region on Crete island’s eastern tip – home to one of Greece’s newest Unesco Geoparks – is about to become a lot more accessible.

Far from Chania’s crowded Venetian harbour and labyrinth of cobbled shopping lanes in the west, this lost-in-the-past region at the island’s opposite end has some of Crete’s least spoilt beaches: these include Vai, home to Europe’s only palm forest, low-key fishing resort Paleokastro, which is a magnet for windsurfers, and Xerokampos, whose pristine sandy coves and secret beaches are reached via a corkscrew road leading from the mountain-top village of Ziros.

Clustered around a sheltered harbour spiked with brightly coloured kaiki fishing boats, Sitia’s tavernas serve slow-cooked kleftiko lamb, garlicky stuffed snails and other local specialities. It’s a steep climb from here through narrow paved streets to reach Sitia’s hilltop Kazarma Venetian fortress, but worth it for breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside dotted with picturesque villages and well-signposted hiking trails.

Along a narrow country lane lined with bamboo canes, White River Cottages is a rustic-styled resort with plenty of mod cons close to the seaside resort of Makrigialos. Rooms from £74 per night; whiterivercottages.com .

This is the warmest region of Crete: expect blue skies from early spring until late autumn.
