Not just anyone can be a good tour guide. As both the front line and backbone of the operation, tour guides carry a huge responsibility to make the guest experience memorable, entertaining, informative, and seamless. The job is much more than reading facts off a sheet.

So whether you are looking to hire a tour guide or thinking about pursuing this career, there are a few must-have qualities of an effective tour guide you need to know about. Of course, every tour (and guide) is different, but the best of the best tour employees have a particular set of skills that are few and far between.

1. Powerful communicator

“Can you hear me at the back?!” Megaphones might be a tour guide’s best friend, but a good tour guide can project and leave that clunky amplification device behind. 

Communication is one of the most important skills of a tour guide. Guests rely on tour guides to provide direction, share facts and information, and keep them entertained throughout the tour. As such, a tour guide must speak fluently and coherently. Not to mention, be able to command attention despite the inevitable distraction of surrounding sights and sounds. 

2. Memory like an elephant

Many aspiring actors and comedians take on the role of a tour guide, and it’s not hard to see why. Like the road to stardom, tour guides become masters at memorizing scripts and delivering performances that come across as natural, rather than rehearsed. 

However, unlike their actor counterparts, tour guides should also be good at remembering names and faces. Although tour guides interact with different guests daily, they can quickly transform a tour from average to extraordinary by addressing every guest by name so that they feel valued and not just another tip.

5. Charismatic and genuine

It’s one thing to make guests laugh, and another to laugh with them. A tour guide who is likeable and personable can light up a destination and make every guest feel like the most important person in the group. 

Out of all the good tour guide qualities, this one is probably the hardest to come by. Many extroverts end up talking too much, and although public speaking is an essential part of the job, real charisma comes out in conversation, when a tour guide has the chance to build rapport with guests — like asking where they’re from and what they do for a living.

And a tour guide who shows genuine interest, listens intently, and recalls details later on, can make a far greater impact on the tour experience than the attraction itself. 

6. Quick-witted and flexible

A tour guide isn’t up on stage, delivering lines to a passive audience. Guaranteed, guests will have random questions and comments at one point or another, and a tour guide must know their stuff while being able to respond with authority and enthusiasm.

Also, anything can happen in an hour-long tour (or more). Next to communication skills, adaptability is essential because people are unpredictable. Guest might stray from the group (or uninvited guests might lurk), roll an ankle, have a bathroom emergency, or simply ask for an ice cream break. A tour guide must be ready to handle things as they come.

7. Sensitive to guest diversity

Tour guides encounter guests from all walks of life, who undoubtedly come with their own cultural expectations, social norms, and special needs. Although we’d like to think the tourism industry accepts everyone and embraces diversity, we still have a long way to go. 

Since tour guides spend the most time with guests, they have a moral responsibility to:

  • respect cultural differences, all abilities, and language barriers
  • tailor their deliveries accordingly
  • demonstrate a hospitable attitude on behalf of the destination
  • inspire tourists to leave a positive social impact

8. In-depth knowledge 

Even if a tour guide isn’t born and raised somewhere, they should know the place inside and out. As I mentioned earlier, guests will have tour and destination-related questions — like where are the best places to eat, what do locals do for fun, or how much water flows over Niagara Falls? (The answer is 2,832 tonnes of water per second).

While it’s tempting to tell guests to g oogle it , a tour guide is far more impressive when they can answer anything thrown their way. After all, guests expect guides to be destination experts, so knowing relevant facts, figures, and tips better than Google is part of the job.  

9. A whole lot of passion

Most tour guides have a passion for travel. It’s only fitting. They want to live the dream and scratch off as many countries as possible on a world map. And working as a tour guide allows them to do that. But if travel is the only reason they go into guiding, they won’t last long. 

Being a tour guide is tough. Sure, they get to show off the places they love and meet travelers from all over the world (outside of covid times, of course), but they also have to work long hours, often on their feet all day, in the peak season heat, while dealing with demanding guests. It’s not for the faint of heart.

When you on-board new hires, you’re hit with the realization that they’re just not a good fit, killing any sense of confidence you had about finding the best person for the job. Obviously, you don’t want people to become disinterested whilst on your tour. Your guide’s personality is a huge part of that. Can they make the tour more interactive? They should be able to invite questions and use demonstrations to help tourists to learn by themselves.

Your trip is going well, you’ve got time to relax and have some fun. You’re off to discover other cultures, different people and new places.

Tour Guides are there to make sense of your feelings, to take you by the hand and lead you where you wouldn’t otherwise go. They’re there to tell you stories where you only see stones, to narrate intertwined lives where you see only a name on a plaque, to take you beyond the hill and show you the stunning scenery you would otherwise have missed.

Seeing the most beautiful painting in the world is even more moving once you’ve heard a little about the tormented artist who painted it.

You can walk along the most picturesque little narrow street in the old quarter of town, but learning a little of the lives lived by past inhabitants will bring history back to life.

The perfect tour guide doesn’t exist and how good a tour guide is on any day will depend on their “audience”, the mood that day and a thousand other variables.

  • Eloquence Good tour guides should be confident public speakers, with clear and audible voices. Being pompous is not endearing. Good tour guides do not take themselves for teachers.
  • Willingness Good tour guides are duty-bound to be willing and able to answer questions and cope with the vagaries of a tour. In doing so, they should be aware of the feelings of the whole group and treat each participant fairly. They should never of course let the behaviour of a disrespectful character who’s being disagreeable get out of hand.
  • Sense of observation Good tour guides should know how to observe the group they’re guiding and adapt their tour accordingly. Old people who can’t walk very fast, crying children, travellers who want to take photos of every last thing they see… Include time for technical breaks.
  • Pace Good tour guides should know their tours and accurately assess the time required. They shouldn’t find themselves overwhelmed by the walking, their commentary, or the breaks, whether they’re planned or not.
  • A smile Last but not least, smiles are so often key (and not only for tour guides!) A smile can add a touch of goodwill and kindness and diffuse most situations.

10 Tips for Being a Good Tour Guide

In the spring of 2013, when a hint of warmer weather got us ready to think about being outside, we put together a toolkit with ideas to help you organize a tour in your community . But don’t let the current chilly winter season stop you from giving―or going on―tours.

Instead, use these 10 tips, compiled by Johns Hopkins, Executive Director of Baltimore Heritage , to help you be the best tour guide you can be. (Not a tour guide? These tips can also give you insight into being a good tour goer.)

1. Face the crowd, not what you’re talking about. Tour guides often get so wrapped up in their subject they forget to face the people they are addressing. One secret to avoid this is to designate somebody in the crowd to interrupt you if they can’t hear you.

2. Be personal. No matter how much we love buildings, it’s a fact that people connect with people. So it’s good to have a few personal anecdotes ready, even if they’re just about past tours you've done. You’ll build a more personal connection to your group and create a memorable tour.

3. Tell a story (historical or contemporary). Make sure you have a few fun and compelling stories to tell about the buildings and sites you’re looking at. People are more likely to feel engaged when they are listening to a story, rather than a list of dates and names.

4. Get moving right away. Tours often get bogged down before they ever begin with tour guides doing the “big wind-up”―introductions, setting the theme, providing context, etc. Plan to scrap 90% of it.

Hint: If you have a script, the first line should tell you: “Move thirty feet up the street before you say anything.”

5. Don’t worry about being perfect. People don’t expect you to be perfect. Set the stage for human imperfection by acknowledging that people who may know more than you should speak up and share their knowledge with the group. The more interactive the tour is, the better!

6. Get help to get organized. Try to get a volunteer to check people in so you can chat with tour goers. People give tours for many reasons, but a big one is to meet new people, and the time before the tour is a great chance to get to know your group.

Hint: If you don’t have a volunteer beforehand, ask somebody on the spot. (They’ll love it!)

7. End on time. (Or try very hard to.) Try like crazy to end on time. Nobody wants to feel like they are in tour jail. Tours on paper always seem too short and on the ground are always too long. Two hours is the absolute maximum. An hour to an hour and a half is better.

8. Limit your number of speakers. It’s hard to talk for just five minutes, so when you have multiple guides talking about different subject areas, it’s easy to lose track of time. Avoid it if you can, but, if you do have several different guides with you, designate one as the lead guide and the others as experts in a specific area.

9. Send a follow-up email. Follow up with an email―it can be as simple as a “thank you” note. If you can follow the tour with another contact, by email or otherwise, that’s another step towards creating a better link between the tour taker and your organization.

10. Avoid these traps:

  • “12 (or 20…) people on the tour is the max.” Rather, let the space and tour guide set the scene.
  • “You MUST plan everything out ahead of time.” In fact, a little spontaneity is good.
  • “Don’t do outdoor tours in the winter.” People will still come, even in the snow.
  • “Always have a backup plan in case it rains.” Don’t worry, people will come out in the rain, and it’s much easier than rescheduling.

The qualities of a good tour guide.

Anyone who has taken a group tour knows just how important the guide is to the success or failure of the trip.  A good guide can elevate and enhance the experience, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime and make guests want to return.  A bad guide can do the opposite,  leaving guests feeling neglected and unimportant.

What are the qualities of a good guide?  Based on my own experience, both as a guest on several tours and as a guide for over 20 years who has taken hundreds of guests around Italy, I’ve put together a list of the must-have traits of a good guide.

  • Patience Answering questions they’ve already answered multiple times will not bother a good guide. They will show both competence and enthusiasm, as if they are hearing that question for the first time.
  • Good with “Difficult People” Most times the problem is that “difficult people” don’t know they are difficult. Great guides know how to master the “beast” in the group. They deal with them and they keep the rest of the group safe from them.
  • Empathic – Can Feel the Room Their radar is always on to feel the room. They will put people at ease, reassuring them that they are in good hands and that they should try to have the best time possible.   
  • Good Sense of Humor A guide with a good sense of humor will increase the enjoyment of the tour and temper any tensions that may arise.
  • Energetic Long days, large groups, physical activity, and nearly daily crisis management require a great deal of energy, both mental and physical. Guides often have back-to-back tours and no days off.
  • Timely Punctuality is a must-have quality for tour guides. If a guide is not on time that makes for unhappy travelers and frustrated co-guides.
  • Organized If a tour guide is organized (and the tour is well-planned), the experience should feel seamless and effortless. Logistics should be nearly invisible to the eyes of the participants.

Form Group Bonds

Unless it’s a private tour with friends and family ,  a group tour will be made up of participants from different locations with diverse personalities and backgrounds.

Without a doubt the success of a tour often relies on the members of the group getting along well and enjoying the shared experience, and a good guide can work wonders to make that happen.

When appropriate, a flexible approach can be the difference between a good and a great tour guide. Being flexible means being open to unexpected challenges and changes, as well as being open to spontaneous moments that will arise on a cultural active vacation.

Outgoing, but Not Overly Enthusiastic

A guide has to have an enthusiastic leading style, but not so enthusiastic that they fail to sound genuine or that they stop listening.

An Acute Sense of Direction

Tour guides should know where they’re going! That’s a given. They should also be able to help direct guests on the fly. Should they be forced to take a detour, they can find an alternative route with a glance at a map or by looking for landmarks.

Local (by Birth or by Trade)

What’s great about the “local guide” quality is that in addition to the planned activities and routes, they can bring their own knowledge, experience and personal anecdotes to the tour. This can make a tour feel particularly special for guests who are looking for authentic experiences.

Knowledgeable

Even if they weren’t born and raised in the region where they work, the best tour guides own a deep knowledge of the history, geography, culture and traditions of the area they guide in. They can point out landmarks, tell stories about the characters who call the area home, identify wildlife, and explain dishes and wines. That depth of knowledge makes guests feel like they’re getting their money’s worth on a tour.

Continues to Learn and Train

A good tour guide should continuously learn about his/her destination. They should also improve their hard and soft skills with off-season training. Lastly, they should research new activities, hotels, and vendors in the area.

The importance of good tour guides for a successful travel experience

When customers book a travel experience with your business, they come with expectations. They rely on your expertise, your local knowledge, and your ability to provide them with an amazing experience.

In case they booked a travel experience that involves a tour guide, they want to travel worry-free. With someone else having the responsibility. The quality of the guide is therefore essential for satisfied customers. A good guide is able to boost the travel experience and add additional value. While a lesser guide does the opposite: leaving customers disappointed and dissatisfied.

A good tour guide does not only boost the travel experience for customers. But they are also responsible for making sure the trip creates positive impact on the destination and minimises negative impact.

Tour guides have a huge responsibility during the travel experience. Not everyone is or can become a good tour guide. We’ve listed six most important qualities for a good tour guide to take into account.

1. Outgoing and engaging

To make travellers feel comfortable during a travel experience, the tour guide needs to be enthusiastic, outgoing, and engaging. Their task is to involve all people in the group and to create a happy and safe environment. They should be easily approachable for questions or concerns and also invite travellers to be curious and ask more questions.

2. Good communication skills

Besides being outgoing and engaging it’s important the tour guide has good and clear communication skills. This is necessary to make sure everyone is aware of the (day) planning and what’s expected of them. Good communication skills also come in handy when explaining specific do’s and don’ts in a sensitive destination.

3. Knowledgeable and passionate

The true added value of a good tour guide is their local knowledge. When visiting a destination, travellers are interested in for example local habits, foreign fruits, and history facts. They will always look at the guide first for further explanation and background information. Preferably, the tour guide is an expert and passionate about the destination.

4. Organised and punctual

Travellers having to wait on their tour guide because they’re late, are often stressed. And might be dissatisfied about the start of the travel experience. So, it’s important for the guide to always be on time, to have a clear structure and to follow the set itinerary . In case the customer requires a change, this could be possible but only when feasible and well-planned.

5. Patient and able to manage a crisis

Not all travellers are easy-going and flexible. A good tour guide knows how to take care of slower or difficult people. They have to remain patient at all times. They also know what to do in case of an emergency: handling the crisis while maintaining a calm atmosphere where possible.

6. Trained and qualified

It’s not a fundamental quality of a good tour guide, but it does add value to have trained and qualified guides. Guides with an official guide training and/or license are professionally trained to be a tour guide. They are able to organise and run a travel experience following official guidelines.

When you are invested in good tourism , you want your travel experiences to be operated in a responsible way. Your tour guides are at the front of the operations and responsible for what actually happens during the travel experience. Therefore, it’s important they are aware and trained on your sustainability policy and practices.

In terms of sustainability, there are five main tasks of a tour guide during a travel experience. By adhering to these guidelines, they’re ensuring a responsible and good travel experience.

1. Treating local communities respectfully

Especially during community-based travel experiences, but also when simply visiting a local market, treating locals with respect is key. Tourism should benefit the local communities and provide positive impact. The tour guide sets the right example by treating locals with respect and ensuring the travellers do as well. A good guide also encourages authentic interaction.

2. Protecting the natural resources

Same as treating locals with respect, natural resources should be protected and well taken care of. This entails not touching and taking any protected flora and fauna from the environment, staying on the tracks, and always taking (plastic) waste out of nature . The guide is responsible for making sure travellers adhere the same guidelines.

3. Ensuring animal welfare

Travel experiences with wildlife are always sensitive and for the sake of the animals, tour guides have to make sure they’re treated well. Not only do they again set the right example, they’re also responsible for reporting mistreatment of animals. Their role is to explain to travellers why certain (captive) animal travel experiences are a no-go and highlight the animal-friendly alternatives.

4. Driving safe and responsible

When driving, the tour guide needs to follow responsible and safe driving guidelines. Keeping to the speed limits, staying on the designated roads, and turning off the engine when standing still are basic aspects. Also, the use of mobile phones is not responsible driving behaviour. In case of safaris , the guide is expected to keep a clear distance from wildlife and to always give them right of way.

5. Raising awareness and educate travellers

During the travel experience, it’s the tour guide’s responsibility all travellers behave responsibly. Even though they should already be informed before their trip, the guide’s task is to remind them and to explain certain rules and regulations. It’s about raising awareness and encouraging travellers to contribute to good tourism during their travel experience.

The most efficient way to make sure your tour guides are following your good tourism practices is training. Provide them with your sustainability policy and explain its practical implementation. Include tasks and guidelines they can relate to and also easily put into practice.

Tour guides are more likely to comply to (new) guidelines and rules if they’re part of the development process. And if they feel they’re contributing to a good cause. Organise a brainstorm session or workshop, ask for their opinion and give them a say. They have more local knowledge and can come up with interesting practices that are useful for everyone.

To remind them about their training, develop a short one-page document with the practical sustainability guidelines. These guidelines can either be a reminder or a supplement of the actual training. It’s also very valuable to provide to new or freelance tour guides you’ve never worked with before.

By providing tour guides with physical guidelines, they’ll know exactly what’s expected of them on the job. Include the guidelines in their contract but also place them in the vehicles. Not only are they be reminded of it all times, but travellers also notice your effort and their commitment.

If you don’t work with local tour guides directly, make sure your local partner informs and trains them on your basic (good tourism) principles.

The significance of authenticity and personal connection

Tourism today is all about authenticity and personal connections, making incredible travel experiences possible. Beyond having knowledgeable and responsible guides, it’s the genuine stories they share that truly captivate travellers. People no longer just want to sightsee; they yearn to experience a destination “like a local.”

1. Showcasing guides on your website

Provide potential travellers with a glimpse into the personalities and expertise of your guides by featuring them on your website . Introduce each guide, highlight their unique backgrounds and experiences. When travellers can familiarise themselves with the guide beforehand, it boosts excitement and comfort right from the beginning of the journey.

2. Inquiring about travellers’ interests

Prioritise understanding your travellers by asking about their interests after booking. A brief, optional survey with multiple-choice questions about their favorite foods, animals, and other relevant preferences can offer valuable insights. Armed with this knowledge, your guides can create personalised experiences tailored to each individual’s interests.

3. Embrace flexibility in itineraries

To foster authentic and personalised connections, avoid strict scripts and itineraries. Allow your guides to integrate the travellers’ interests gathered from the survey and tailor the experience accordingly. While ensuring essential experiences are covered, the flexibility to accommodate spontaneous detours, such as visiting a local food market or discovering a hidden gem, will enhance overall satisfaction.

4. Encourage engaging conversations

Motivate your guides to engage in meaningful conversations with travellers throughout the experience. By actively listening to their needs, preferences, and curiosities, guides can better understand the group dynamics and adjust their storytelling accordingly. This creates an environment where open dialogue is valued, fostering cultural exchange and authentic connections.

Good and responsible tour guides are hard to find but worth so much if you have found them. Invest time or money in working with reliable partners or train guides yourself. Taking good care of your guides benefits your business and make you more successful long-term.

Committed and happy guides do their best to provide your travellers with the trip of their lifetime by taking that extra step. When done well, this results in satisfied and hopefully repeating customers.

Being an exceptional tour leader is a delicate art. The best guides leave a tour group feeling like they have experienced the best a place has to offer within a relatively short period.

Moreover, an ideal tour guide offers a fun, new, culturally immersive experience while simultaneously making you feel right at home. And that’s no easy task.

What Characteristics Make a Great Tour Guide?

An in-depth understanding of the subject matter, top-notch communication skills, a good sense of humor, punctuality, and impeccable time management — all these qualities make up an effective tour guide and help contribute to a professional tour.

But what are the essential tour guide skills one needs to get ahead in this booming industry? How can you ensure you can give a random group of people an unforgettable travel experience and confidently lead any tour? To answer these questions, we’ve compiled a list of some fundamental traits that help make a great guide below.

1. Thorough Knowledge Of Your Tour

Knowing exactly where you are and the ins and outs of your specific tour are fundamental for any tourist guide. Tour operators and travel brochures will usually offer a good amount of basic information about famous destinations. But with globalization, even the more isolated areas of the world will have at least some information about them out there.

Moreover, the internet can offer travelers an abundance of history and interesting facts about almost anything. And many travelers do their homework these days. But even if they don’t, they can usually reach for their phone and Google where they are and what they’re seeing at any given minute.

So you want to make sure that you can offer your clients something not only interesting and exciting, but hopefully also something they don’t already know. And the way to do that is by educating yourself and staying informed. Do your research (online and elsewhere), talk to locals and colleagues, study similar tours, and think about what facts and tidbits will make your specific tour stand out. And stay up to date on any relevant changes so you’re not caught off-guard.

Keep in mind that there are different types of tour guiding and you need to prepare accordingly.

2. Strong Understanding

No tour is the same. But one thing that makes any tour special and memorable is when people leave feeling that they know a lot more about a place than they did going in. And in the modern age of easy access to information, that’s no small feat.

You want to make sure you know your subject matter front and back. Whether it be Times Square or a rural village in Asia, a big city craft beer trail or the wide-open spaces of a national park, a row of museums and/or street art masterpieces, or anything in between. Study your terrain and ensure you are confident in your material daily.

You also want to make sure you know your audience as much as possible. A tour guide needs to both provide information and answer questions while remaining professional and respectful. So a strong sense of empathy and cultural open-mindedness is also key. Remember that you’re working with people of many different backgrounds, various levels of education, and numerous social norms. The questions a client might ask can often be unpredictable and challenging. And you want to be prepared.

So try to put yourself in your listeners’ shoes — see what it is that makes your tour and what people learn from you particularly fun, informative, and inclusive. In other words, go that extra mile and take the time to make your tour truly unique.

3. Ability To Communicate Effectively

Knowledge is one thing, but the ability to pass on that knowledge in a memorable and effective way is quite another. So a good guide must be a good communicator. And good communication skills depend on several different factors.

First off, you want to be sure nothing is lost in translation. With tourism, the clientele is usually international. Most tours around the world are therefore conducted in several different languages. Knowing the local language and dialect is a major plus. But being bilingual and/or a polyglot is a bonus as well. Either way, you want to make sure you know the local basics — how to say, “thank you,” the correct names (and pronunciations) of famous landmarks, historical figures, cuisine, and/or any other common points of interest associated with your particular tour. A translation app can come in very handy here as well.

And since your audience comes from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds, you also want to keep it both interesting and simple. Whether you’re talking to a small group or dozens of people, you want to make sure your audience is not missing out on anything. Speak clearly and loudly, enunciate, and maintain eye contact whenever possible. Keep it short and don’t overcomplicate things. Read your audience, ask questions, and make sure that everyone is on the same page.

Although having an outgoing personality helps, not all tour guides are extroverts. If you are confident in your tour and know your stuff, you should be able to relate to and communicate with almost any group of people with comfort and ease. Effective communication as a tour guide simply means that everyone is engaged, comfortable, learning, and having at least some level of fun throughout the tour.

There are situations where it might not be possible to communicate effectively, in those cases it’s fundamental to have a tour guide system in place. These audio systems allow you to communicate with members of a tour, even in a noisy environment.

4. Ability To Improvise

Improvisational skills are essential. Because no matter how prepared you are, things can’t always go according to plan. So, the best tour guides can think on their feet, embrace spontaneity, and adapt to any situation.

The ability to improvise can prove vital in any number of different scenarios. Telling an improvised joke to answer a difficult question can get the whole group laughing, lighten the mood, and thereby ensure that people stay engaged. If the weather is bad, or a business is closed, or a street is blocked off, successfully rerouting your tour and incorporating something off-script can add a sense of adventure. Improvisation on the part of the guide can often bring a group closer together and make the tour feel extra unique. And in more serious situations, administering first aid and/or being able to get to help quickly in case of an emergency will ensure everyone’s safety, and can even help save a life.

Since the clientele is so varied in the tourist industry, improvising is second nature to most professional tour guides. Because, essentially, you never really know what you’re going to get with any given tour. There are plenty of surprises in store daily — from the weather to the size of the group to its level of language and cultural differences, and so on.

Being able to deal with the unexpected during a tour takes some time and practice. But even if you’re starting, there are certain things you can learn to anticipate. Plan, but have a plan b too. And during the tour itself — go with the flow, have fun, and trust your instincts.

5. Eagerness To Learn And Willingness To Teach Others

The job of a tour guide shares many common traits with that of a teacher. And being a good teacher requires not only knowledge but also a certain level of patience, flexibility, and empathy. At the same time, a good teacher is someone always willing to learn.

Aristotle called teaching “the highest form of understanding.” Albert Einstein had this to say about it: “I never teach my pupils; I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.” But perhaps Bruce Lee drew the parallel best: “A teacher is never a giver of truth; he is a guide, a pointer to the truth that each student must find for himself.” As a tour guide, you too use your understanding to provide the conditions for people to learn. You point out certain details and facts that they may not be aware of yet, and they do the rest.

And with every person you meet and every tour you give, you grow and expand your understanding too. You share your experience and in return, you learn from the experiences of others — both about their culture, history, and background, as well as your own.

One of the many things that make the job of a tour guide so unique is this daily cultural exchange between people. What brings you together is simply some common point of interest — art, history, food, and so on. But every tour’s benefits and long-term rewards can be priceless and immeasurable for everyone involved.

When you’re looking for a good tour guide, it’s helpful to recognize some key factors that determine the right “fit” for you. What makes a good tour guide? How do you know if you’ve found the right person to guide you through your places of interest? In this article, we’ll explore key factors that make a good tour guide so you can get the most out of your tour.

Finding the optimal travel guide is a critical piece of your overall travel satisfaction. For some reason, it’s also one of the most overlooked and underexplored components.

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at. 

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

The "diamond ring effect" is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia's Tropical North Queensland in 2012.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
