Text description provided by the architects. The project of Olivier Debré Contemporary Art Center originates in an international competition that called for proposal to transform the former “Ecole des beaux-arts” in Tours in a space for the exhibition and creation of contemporary Arts, alongside with the conservation of the collection of the abstract painter Olivier Debré. The ambition of the program was to respect and dialogue with the dense historical city center, to conserve the character of the existing building, but at the same time to provide huge scale voids for the new exhibition function as well as an open relationship with the city. The project originated in the existing conditions: a valuable architectural heritage, a particular urban context, a lucid ambition expressed by the competition brief. Accompanying them is the unique illuminating vision of reality in the work of Olivier Debré.

tours centre d'art contemporain

The project strives to clarify the building components in their reciprocal relationships, the urban context and the program they will contain. Two isolated volumes are proposed, two moments that belong to separate times: the preexisting main volume is preserved and isolated to intensify its symbolic value as a public building that belongs to a specific historical moment; a new volume emerges alongside, juxtaposed to the older one with its absence of scale and time. The distance between the two volumes is measured by a transparent and communicative body of light that makes the complex permeable and gives meaning to its urban condition. The project balances on the subtly antinomic dialogue between the two buildings: on the one hand, an extroverted volume places in the ground; on the other hand a smooth and monumental completely introverted block, offset compared to the first, floating above a glazed void.

tours centre d'art contemporain

However, their tangible texture is symmetrical, the white massif and thick limestone of the new building echoing the tonality of the reconstituted stone slabs of the historical building. Creating an image that clearly belongs to the collective memory of the site, the stone is posed with the regional traditional technique of masonry. Its expressive possibilities are explored to intensify its timelessness, weight and temperature. The construction is built out of stone, while spaces are carved by light originating voids that provide the possibility of a completely open and new program.

tours centre d'art contemporain

A distância entre os dois volumes é medida por um corpo de luz transparente e comunicante, que torna o complexo permeável e dá significado à sua condição urbana.

  • Modern & contemporary art and accessibility: initiatives in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur

Many cultural venues in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur are spearheading inclusive policies to meet the needs of people with auditory, mental, physical and visual challenges. Discover the various initiatives on offer and our suggestions for adapted tours.

Culture & disabilities

Making art accessible to all

Culture belongs to everyone. The French Law of February 11th, 2005 relating to equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship with regards to people with challenges made the accessibility of venues welcoming the public an obligation. In recent years, a growing number of monuments, museums, foundations and modern & contemporary exhibition venues have adapted their tour layouts to make them disability-friendly. As a result, many of our cultural venues are now accessible to all and offer museum content and activities adapted to people with disabilities. Alternatives are also put forward for any areas that are not inaccessible. Many cultural venues in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur have instigated voluntarily inclusive policies : for example, the Musée Fernand Léger in Biot, Musée Muséum Départemental in Gap, Fondation Luma in Arles and Musée Bonnard in Le Cannet. Various art centres have been taking the lead too: Polaris in Istres, the Centre International d’Art Contemporain in Carros, Centre d’Art Contemporain in Châteauvert and Espace de l’Art Concret in Mouans-Sartoux .

The “Tourism & Handicap” Label

Awarded to venues catering to specific challenges

“Tourism & Handicap” is the only French national label distinguishing establishments that cater to the needs of visitors with disabilities. The label covers four types of impairment: auditory , mental , physical and visual . The “Tourism & Handicap” website features a browser that allows you to search for establishments per type of disability and geographical area. The “Tourism & Handicap” label offers a three-prong guarantee: rapid identification of adapted sites through the use of pictograms, the presence of trained and attentive staff, and the provision of services that respect accessibility criteria. Four cultural establishments in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur are now holders of the label for all four types of impairment:

  • Mucem in Marseille
  • Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence
  • Musée Matisse in Nice
  • Musée Picasso in Antibes

Other sites have set up their own facilities: for example, the Luma Arles app allow you to prepare your tour by offering details on the accessibility of each area and activity.

Tour suggestions per disability type

The Mucem in Marseille schedules regular guided tours in French sign language ( Langue des Signes Française (LSF) ), led by deaf specialist guides. Bilingual tours for the deaf or hearing-impaired are also available. The Musée National Fernand Léger in Biot offers tours in French sign language led by specialist guides, as well as self-guided tours accompanied by visual guides in French or English sign language. Visitors can discover the collections at the Musée Picasso in Antibes with a French sign language tour using the Picasso Antibes app (the app also offers audio descriptions for the visually impaired). French sign language tours are available at numerous other venues too, including the Musée Muséum Départemental in Gap, Musée Réattu in Arles, MAC in Marseille and Musée Bonnard in Le Cannet.

musee-picasso-antibes-gveran.jpg

The hearing-impaired

The Musée Muséum Départemental in Gap is fitted with hearing loops available at Reception, in the conference room and Micro-Folie room. Some of the tour videos are subtitled. Guided tours at the Fondation Luma in Arles are adapted to hearing-impaired visitors thanks to a wireless hearing loop system . The Polaris Centre d’Art in Istres is also kitted out to welcome hearing-impaired visitors.

The physically challenged

Various venues loan out tour equipment for people with physical challenges . These include wheelchairs and folding seats at the Mucem, folding stools at the Musée Muséum Départemental in Gap, wheelchairs and folding chairs at the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence, wheelchairs – including one very wide model – and seating at the Fondation Luma in Arles and wheelchairs at the Fondation Van Gogh.

The blind / people with visual impairments

Various facilities for welcoming the blind and people with visual impairments are available according to the venue. These include touchscreens , audio guides and special markings . A special room is dedicated to the discovery of tactile materials (glass, tiles, etc.) at the Musée National Fernand Léger in Biot, allowing visitors to explore the museum’s monumental façade through touch. A tactile version of Fernand Léger’s painting, The woman with black hair , is also on offer. The Musée Réattu in Arles now features a “ Musée Parallèle ” (parallel museum): a fully-accessible space where visitors with visual challenges can plunge into the heart of a painting, imagine a photo by listening to its description or touch images. The Nouveau Musée National in Monaco regularly produces or reproduces works in relief , while the Musée Museum Départemental in Gap is now equipped with a Swell Form machine. Audio guides are available at the Mucem and Musée Estrine in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The Mucem, Musée Estrine and Fondation Luma have installed floor lighting systems. Many venues also loan out magnifying glasses to assist visually-impaired visitors.

The mentally challenged

A cultural venue in a category of its own, 3bisF in Aix-en-Provence is located inside Montperrin hospital. Boasting a dual vocation as a hub of artistic creation and treatment centre, its aim is to make art accessible to the general public and first and foremost its patients. The hospital’s creative spaces welcome exhibitions by artists who work in close contact with the patients. The Nouveau Musée National in Monaco also welcomes people who are hospitalized or undergoing psychiatric treatment. Last but not least, various modern & contemporary art venues in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region offer tours and workshops for people with mental challenges (Musée Muséum Départemental in Gap, Fondation Vasarely, FRAC and more), while others offer easy to read and understand booklets (the Fondation Luma publishes a special booklet on the works on show in the tower and grounds).

Centre International d’Art Contemporain

The contemporary art center, established in the Château de Carros since 1998, is a place for exhibitions, creation and experimentation in the plastic arts.

The Centre International d'Art Contemporain is the first and only major cultural institution in the visual arts sector to open its doors to the valleys of the upper Nice region. It sits atop the village of Carros, built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Var plain, in a medieval castle that offers a 360-degree view of the landscape, from the shores of the Mediterranean to the Mercantour mountains. The CIAC's mission, like that of the fifty or so other art centers operating in France, is to produce and distribute contemporary art in the field of visual arts, while encouraging experimentation. This translates into two annual temporary exhibitions, the publication of catalogs, the presentation of its permanent collection, the hosting of artists in residence, cultural mediation initiatives and an invitation to all to consult catalogs and archives in its documentation center.

Still quoted with impressive regularity … Mark Williams and Paul Whitehouse in An Evening With The Fast Show.

An Evening With The Fast Show review – chummy chat and catchphrase classics

Warwick Arts Centre Ted and Ralph, the ‘Suit you!’ tailors and the rest of the gang’s most fondly remembered characters reconvene for a 30th-anniversary greatest hits sketch show, interspersed with the cast reminiscing about their creation

A collective “oof” emanates from the audience when Charlie Higson reminds us it is 30 years since The Fast Show began. But many of its characters and catchphrases have weathered those three decades: “Scorchio!” from surreal TV parody Chanel 9, and “Suit you, sir!” the refrain of Paul Whitehouse and Mark Williams’ smutty tailors are still quoted with impressive regularity.

The BBC sketch show, which ran from 1994 to 1997, was created by university buddies Higson and Whitehouse, joined by Williams, Arabella Weir, John Thomson, Simon Day, and Caroline Aherne , and they drew in an even wider galaxy of comedy contemporaries, including Vic and Bob, as writers, creating a fast-paced programme packed with original characters.

An Evening With The Fast Show is on firm footing as far as reunions go: a 30th anniversary is a notable milestone. But it’s not the first time the cast have reunited. There was 2002’s Farewell Tour, a 2011 mini-series, and 2020’s TV special The Fast Show: Just a Load of Blooming Catchphrases , featuring the cast doing talking heads in character.

This tour combines conversation about the history of the show and the careers of its stars with a selection of big-hitter sketches. Some are from the show’s first series, some from that 2020 TV special, while others are given contemporary twists – Thomson’s “nouveau football fan” brings up this week’s England kit controversy , and Higson’s innuendo-prone car dealer Swiss Toni references Andrew Tate.

left to right, Arabella Weir, Simon Day, Charlie Higson, Mark Williams and Paul Whitehouse.

The tour programme declares that The Fast Show has aged better than many other sketch shows. This feels fair. Certainly it hasn’t had any episodes shelved, like more questionable successors such as Little Britain . Instead, its astute character studies and willingness to embrace pathos have stood the test of time.

There’s a little of that astuteness and pathos on stage: Higson and Whitehouse recreate groundskeeper/master duo Ted and Ralph’s first sketch, while a video tribute to the missing Aherne is followed by Thomson as a lone Roy, silent without his Renee. It’s a poignant moment, albeit one taken straight from the last TV special. Mostly we get the classics – big dollops of nostalgia for long-time fans.

Day and Whitehouse.

Higson steers the show between sketch and reminiscence. Some of the chat sections are a little stilted, perhaps as a symptom of the need to recreate them every night. Thomson is the most electric speaker, whipping out impressions and stories that feel organic. Quips that crack up the cast stand out: Day comparing the man who inspired his “competitive dad” character to “Steve Coogan after too many Tia Marias”; or Whitehouse crediting the writers behind Ted and Ralph, Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews, “… or as we now call them: Arthur.”

There are compelling snippets from Weir about the sexism of 90s comedy and the Fast Show characters who reflected it, and mention of cast members embracing sobriety. Yet most anecdotes tread the ground of previous reunions and interviews.

Still, it’s warming to be reminded what a big deal this show was for its cast, creators and fans. This nostalgia-soaked, catchphrase-filled walk down memory lane, while devoid of innovation, is a well-earned victory lap for the team behind a slice of comedy history.
