From his solo work, to his time as the front man of his self formed band Reamonn, Rea Garvey is an incredible singer/songwriter that I have followed for many years, and was incredibly excited to see live. I must say, the show didn’t disappoint me at all, in fact, if anything, it hugely exceeded my expectations. The solo show that I recently saw was incredible, and he made his way to the stage with nothing but his electric guitar slung over his shoulder. He made his way to the microphone stand in the middle of the stage, and before even introducing himself, he launched straight into an incredible guitar solo. Heading something from the very first track that doesn’t appear on any of his recordings was incredible, and I was blown away by the extent of his talent on guitar.

He then welcomed his band to the stage, and introduced himself. He played a great selection of his tracks, new and old, and even played a version of All Good Things, a track he collaborated on with Nelly Furtardo. He was wonderful at interacting with us in the crowd, and kept shouting, ‘are you ready, let’s dance’ which was great to get everyone dancing and singing along. When he played Hallelujah, he held the audience in silence, and then on the last verse, invited us to join in. It was a really special moment, and he’s an incredibly talented live performer.

Von Irland nach Deutschland – und mitten in die Herzen der Fans: Das ist die Kurzform der Geschichte von Rea Garvey. Tickets für die Live-Konzerte des vielseitigen Künstlers garantieren ein unvergessliches Musik-Event zwischen Rock, Balladen und Pop.

Jury-Mitglied, Komponist, Songwriter und Sänger: Rea Garvey gilt als echtes Multitalent. Sein Herz aber gehört den Live-Auftritten. Dementsprechend ist eine Show von Rea Garvey immer ein Erlebnis.

Start als Shirtverkäufer und Roadie

1973 wird Raymond Michael Garvey in der Stadt Tralee im Südwesten Irlands geboren. Sein Vater ist Polizist, seine Mutter Hausfrau. Zur Familie gehören auch die sieben Schwestern von Rea. Schon früh entdeckt er seine Liebe zur Musik – in Irland nichts Ungewöhnliches – und tourt mit verschiedenen Bands durch die Lande. Der große Erfolg allerdings bleibt lange aus.

Dann jedoch unternimmt Rea Garvey mit seiner Band The Reckless Pedestrians eine Tournee in Deutschland und beschließt spontan, sich hier niederzulassen. Zur Begründung erklärt er in einem Interview: „Hier habe ich das Gefühl, den Ton des Publikums zu treffen. Vorher habe ich vier Jahre in Irland in jedem Loch gespielt und bin trotzdem nicht weitergekommen.“

Kurzentschlossen leiht sich Rea Garvey von einer seiner Schwestern Geld für ein Flugticket und verlässt Irland nach dem Tourende dauerhaft. Doch auch in Deutschland wartet kein Plattenvertrag an der nächsten Straßenecke, im Gegenteil. Garvey arbeitet zunächst als Shirtverkäufer und Roadie auf verschiedenen Festivals. Parallel dazu sucht er per Zeitungsannonce nach Mitstreitern für eine Band.

Durchbruch mit Reamonn

1998 gründet Garvey seine erste Band: Reamonn. Silvester 1998/99 hat die Gruppe ihren ersten Auftritt und die Karriere von Rea Garvey nimmt Fahrt auf. Der Bandname stammt von der irischen Schreibweise des Vornamens Raymond: Réamonn. Einige Monate später folgt der erste Plattenvertrag, im Mai 2000 erscheint das Debütalbum „Tuesday“.

Die Single-Auskopplung „Supergirl“ klettert steil nach oben in die Charts und macht die Band berühmt. Reamonn treten mit Größen wie den Guano Apes und Robbie Williams auf. Allein 2000 spielen sie über 200 ausverkaufte Konzerte. 2010 dann trennt sich die Band, und Rea Garvey konzentriert sich auf seine Solokarriere.

Neben seiner Karriere als Sänger mit regelmäßigen Gastauftritten und Touren ist Rea Garvey auch in anderen Bereichen aktiv, unter anderem in der Jury von „The Voice of Germany“ und „The Masked Singer“. Darüber hinaus komponiert er für andere Künstler wie Nu Pagadi oder Elli. Auch Gastauftritte in Filmen zählen zu Reas Repertoire.

Soziales Engagement und Privates

Trotz eines randvollen Terminkalenders schafft es der Musiker, sich auch sozial zu engagieren. Noch zu Reamonn-Zeiten gründet er gemeinsam mit der Band die Stiftung „Saving An Angel“. Das Projekt der Kindernothilfe kümmert sich um behinderte Kinder und ihre Familien.

Seit etlichen Jahren macht er sich zudem für das „Clearwater Project“ stark, das sauberes Trinkwasser in der Amazonas-Region von Ecuador gewährleisten will. Dafür bekommt Rea Garvey 2015 den Bambi in der Kategorie „Unsere Erde.“

So umtriebig Rea Garvey im Berufsleben und seinem sozialen Engagement ist, so bodenständig ist er privat: Seit 2002 ist er mit seiner Frau Josephine verheiratet, der neben dem gleichnamigen Song unter anderem auch die Hits „Supergirl“ und „Wild Love“ gewidmet sind. Die beiden haben eine gemeinsame Tochter und leben abwechselnd in Berlin und einem kleinen hessischen Dorf. Tolle Atmosphäre, unbeschreiblich schönes Konzert, gute Platzaufteilung! Rea Garvey strahlt so viel Positives aus, macht eine tolle Stimmung. Das 5. Mal live erlebt, sicher nicht das letzte Mal!!!!! Empfehlenswert, wenn man sich was Gutes tun will!

Geniales Erlebnis

Wir haben Stehplatzkarten gekauft und waren ca. 1h vor Einlass da. Es wurde stresslos an 4 Reihen angestellt und wir konnten nach dem Ticketscan rasch unsere Mäntel abgeben. DIe VAZ in St.Pölten war nicht zu groß und in vorderster "Front" auch die Akustik super. Von Rea Garvey natürlich gar nicht zu schweigen... Super symphatischer Musiker. Würde jederzeit wieder diese Kombi kaufen (Rea Garvey in der VAZ St.Pölten).

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Lana Del Rey at Coachella review – a disappointingly lifeless start to the festival

This year starts off on a bum note with the singer’s downbeat energy and underpowered vocals proving to be a buzzkill while even special guest Billie Eilish couldn’t save the day

T he cliche image of Lana Del Rey – flower crown, heart-shaped sunglasses, Lolita pout – matches the cliche of a Coachella girl. Both Del Rey and the festival saw a peak in the mid-2010s, during the early years of influencer culture excess. So it makes sense that Coachella’s golden girl would headline … even though, in 2024, Del Rey doing so feels about a decade too late.

Indeed, Del Rey first played Coachella exactly 10 years to the day before Friday’s opening night performance, as she proudly told the crowd. This time, she rode in on a biker motorcade, clad in a baby blue sequin dress, smiling and waving like the beauty queens she’s prone to singing about. It was ambitious, lively crowd work – literal momentum to start the show off right. But then she opened her mouth.

Del Rey has become an icon for the dour and terminally online, in no small part to her well-known shtick: being too cool and half there. Unfortunately, her signature laconic delivery just didn’t work for such a big stage, and came off as unprepared rather than unbothered.

Ongoing mic problems plagued her set the whole way through, causing awkward stops, starts and moments in which she just motioned for the singing crowd to pick up the slack for her.

Her pitchy, faltering vocals were reminiscent of her disastrous 2012 Saturday Night Live performance , sometimes dubbed the worst in the show’s history. (Whether or not that dubious distinction is fair or not is an argument for another day.) Back then, critics tore her vacant, yet somehow also trying-too-hard, turn to shreds. Del Rey has redeemed herself in the years since with some very good music, and enough time has passed that she can joke about the fiasco.

While driving into town, I noticed that Del Rey poked fun at the SNL mishap on a billboard that referenced its airdate. I assume it was supposed to be a joke intended to show how far she’s come. Instead, I fear it served as an omen.

Was this a headline act, or a hostage-proof-of-life video? A woman standing next to me and I burst out laughing at Del Rey’s lifeless delivery of the Summertime Sadness opening line “I’m feeling electric tonight” because, well, clearly she was not. Background dancers gave their all behind her, landing balletic, lyrical moves. At one point, when she attempted to artfully drape herself over one, it looked as if she might fall asleep right there.

Del Rey maintained her capacity to surprise, though. Just when it felt as if she hit peak indifference watching, stalking around the stage and mumbling lyrics as if she had nothing better to do with her time, she transitioned into a segment where she lay on the stage and sang, straight up bed-rotting her way though Coachella.

It’s bad luck Del Rey had so many issues with her mic. But she can’t blame the lackluster scene on technical difficulties alone. When she brought out guest stars Jon Batiste and Billie Eilish , or even duetted with her background singers, their voices sounded rich and full, while hers sounded like what you hear at sorority karaoke night. The audience stayed polite, and diehard fans were going to have a good time anyway. About 20 minutes into the show, however, attendees started to leave early, and this stream of quitters did not end.

Much of the audience hemorrhaged by the time that Eilish, Del Rey’s rumored and hotly anticipated main special guest, came out. That’s a shame, because their performance of Video Games proved to be the highlight. Del Rey gushed over Eilish, calling her “the voice of a generation”. And Eilish gave us the line of the day when she pointed to Del Rey, the OG flower crown influencer, and said: “This is the reason for half of you bitches’ existence.”

'Who is this for?': Lana Del Rey headlined Coachella, and things got weird

A fter joining Lana Del Rey’s headlining set on Friday of this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival , Billie Eilish pointed at the pop star and made a grand declaration.

“This is the reason for half you bitches’ existence,” she told the crowd. “Including mine.”

Thousands of Del Rey’s faithful cheered in agreement. Likely the Indio festival’s most anticipated act, the influential pop star delivered a decade’s worth of hits to a crowd packed with dressed-alike superfans on Friday. She brimmed with life onstage, charismatic and glittering in a blue dress and with full command of the sly-then-soaring voice behind classics like “Doin’ Time” and “Young and Beautiful.” Alongside Del Rey, surprise guests Eilish and Jon Batiste were the most charming versions of themselves.

Del Rey arrived two minutes early to her set on the back of a motorcycle and cruised through a hollowed-out section of crowd before climbing up to a stage dominated by 35-foot-high columns and huge wire gates. The set design fit Del Rey’s faded-luxury aesthetic to a T, and the motorcycle entry gave instant gratification to a crowd who had waved goodbye to Peso Pluma more than an hour earlier. She jumped into the music, and by song 2, “West Coast,” the audience was enthralled.

Retro imagery, ethereal beauty and many, many hits ensued. Del Rey’s stirring version of “Chemtrails Over the Country Club” was a highlight, and her flickers of emotion throughout the set were enough to prompt laughter and sighs of contentment. The camera and light work were mostly excellent; in the audience, we hung on every word and smile. 

This is not to say the 22-song show wasn’t weird, or without error. Del Rey appeared annoyed by an earpiece issue at one point, and the calmly paced, late-night set occasionally lapsed into sleepiness. At times she seemed totally disconnected from the rest of the stage’s choreography — unlike tight, energetic Peso Pluma.

And then there was the hologram. (Before you get confused, Del Rey is still alive and not an anime Vocaloid character .)

When frequent Del Rey collaborator Jack Antonoff took the stage, the “ Taylor Swift is here” rumor reached a fever pitch in my section of the main stage crowd. No such luck. Antonoff started the tune for Del Rey’s “Hope Is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman Like Me to Have — but I Have It” on the piano. Then a silvery, fake version of Del Rey popped into view inside a newly erected wire semicircle at center stage.

Holo-Lana — legless but surprisingly convincing — spun in circles while Antonoff played. It was unclear if the real Del Rey was backstage singing, or if she was using the computer-made figure as a full-on labor replacement. At times the image wobbled, teetering off-center against the melody.

As I watched, perturbed and confused, someone near me blurted out, “Who is this for?” When the hologram faded into nothing, Antonoff slunk away, not having shared the stage with the actual Del Rey. Another neighbor in the crowd shrugged, “Well, that was a choice.”

Del Rey’s fans online quickly rationalized it. 

The night’s other collaborations were far more successful. For one, Del Rey’s backup vocalists are absolute powerhouses — as 2023 Outside Lands attendees can testify. They shone brightest on “Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd,” when Del Rey gave way and let two of the three pour out heart-wrenching solos.

The backup crew also pitched in on Del Rey and Batiste’s fantastic “Candy Necklace” take. The Grammy-laden jazz artist was only playing the piano part until Del Rey sang, “I’ll let you take it, Jon.” He dropped a quick few-line ditty, and the backup vocalists were there to turn what felt like an impromptu jam into a natural continuation of the song. Del Rey supplied some brief lines of her own, Batiste matched them and the whole act took on a fresh charm. Two legends in their prime, as  Taylor Swift called Del Rey in February, having fun with their music. The crowd’s goodbye for Batiste was much heartier than its hello.

Eilish was next. Sixteen years Del Rey’s junior, Eilish gushed in a 2023 interview with the older star that a picture of Del Rey had been the lock screen image for her very first phone. On Friday, the love was apparent — Eilish looked absolutely starry-eyed, sitting next to Del Rey on a high-up portion of the set. The two sang a verse each from Eilish’s breakout hit, “Ocean Eyes,” then combined powers for Del Rey’s “Video Games.” 

The duets were special — a girl next to me in the crowd said, “I think I’m peaking,” during “Ocean Eyes” — and the pair fell into giggles after finishing the second song. For cool-as-can-be Del Rey, it was a cute moment. Speaking more than she did at any other point in the show, the singer said of Eilish, “That’s the voice of our generation, the voice of your generation. I’m so f–king grateful she’s standing next to me right now singing my favorite song of hers.”

Del Rey closed out her set with “Young and Beautiful” and paraded once more on the back of a motorcycle, through the crowd then out a side gate. She waved goodbye. This year’s Weekend 1 marks 10 years since Del Rey’s star-making first performance at Coachella. As the crowd dispersed, her backup dancers sprayed champagne.
