Exclusive: Inside Guy Sebastian’s family home
If the world’s a stage for singer and songwriter Guy Sebastian, his home on Sydney’s eastern beaches, which he shares with wife Jules and their two children, is no exception. His talents can be on instant display to the steady flow of friends and family who regularly cross its threshold.
In the foyer, Jules and Guy Sebastian with architect Joe Snell of Studio Snell.
Arranged in a U-shape, the home’s his ‘amphitheatre’, his grand piano having pride of place in the central foyer, a raised space within a soaring nine-metre void. When he’s alone, Guy tinkles away, but, when friends drop in, he and Jules throw open the doors along each side of that U and everyone can listen to him perform. If he wants to make a showbiz entrance – not really his style – the helical staircase forged in steel and encased in crisp white render, which descends the void, provides the perfect vehicle.
SP01 ‘Holland’ bench by Metrica from Space. Walls in hand-trowelled custom concrete panels. Flooring in black aggregate concrete with light grind. Stairs in blackbutt and moulded steel with rendered finish.
This is a home that’s full of grand gestures and an element of theatre – it’s a fascinating fusion of both the public and private person, never losing sight of the fact that it’s also a family home for the couple and sons Hudson, seven, and Archer, five. Its moods shift with the time of day and the many purposes to which it is being put.
After a long search, the couple chanced upon this property about six years ago, seduced by its generous 1400 square metres, rare in this suburb, and its proximity to the beach. “We fell in love with the large block. My dream was to have a big backyard and tennis court,” says Guy. The only drawback was that the site was hogged by a 70-year-old bungalow showing its age.
Kitchen in Polytec Venette finish by Freedom Kitchens. Sub-Zero refrigerator and Gaggenau appliances, all from Winning Appliances. Viccarbe ‘Last Minute’ stools from Hub. Custom pendant light in solid brass. Active Plus pull-out nozzle tap from Franke. Zip HydroTap in matt black. Caesarstone ‘Rugged Concrete’ engineered stone bench top.
Drawing on the talents of Joe Snell of Studio Snell – a former judge on a home renovation show, he and Guy met through sharing an agent – they bulldozed the old-timer and created a modern four-bedroom, three-level home. Design-savvy Guy and Jules presented Joe with a bursting scrapbook of images from Pinterest and other websites as inspiration for their forever home. He in turn spent time with the family to suss out their day-to-day needs. “We wanted our home to suit family living, with the children having their own spaces, and also be able to entertain,” says Jules. “I have five principles – space, light, air, view and sound – get those right and it just flows,” says Joe. And flow it does, and not just thanks to him. “Guy and Jules had a distinct style – they loved concrete, steel, glass, and black and white. I had to get them to back themselves and have the confidence to build the house that reflected them. That way they really own it.”
In the dining area, ‘Huxley’ table from Jardan with ‘Melrose’ chairs from Coco Republic. Step & Kick Series ‘Big Kick’ light in bronzed brass from Volker Haug Studio. Walls in Dulux ‘Lexicon’. Floors in polished concrete. Artworks, from left: Nicoline A. Milton Alirio print from Designstuff, print from Blacklist Store, and By Garmi Paper Shadows No.3 print from Designstuff.
The Freedom Kitchens joinery reads as furniture rather than being built-in. Artworks, from left: Nicoline A. Milton Alirio print from Designstuff, print from Blacklist Store, and By Garmi Paper Shadows No.3 print from Designstuff.
“Joe opened up our world,” adds Guy. “I love it when someone comes in with fresh eyes and unlocks a home’s potential.” With few openings on the facade, the house presents like a bunker to the street (“Yes, it’s fortress-like, but my job is fairly public, so I need some privacy,” says Guy). But walk in the front door and it reveals itself miraculously, with soaring voids and spans soaking up expansive ocean views and, of course, that amphitheatre lies directly before you. “The piano is the first thing you see. It’s a natural stage, especially when the doors are open,” says Joe. Lofty walls of horizontal ribbed concrete soften the void’s verticality, while the spiral stairs complement the curves of the grand piano.
In the media room, Glas Italia ‘LA Sunset’ coffee table, Edra ‘Absolu’ sofa and Moooi ‘Calligraphy Bird’ rug, all from Space.
“The foyer and stairs are works of art. I can be sitting at the piano and appreciate all the detail in the concrete,” says Guy. “And that stair was not cheap, but Joe said, ‘think Guggenheim’.” The bravura performance continues down a few steps into the kitchen and family area. Under the six-metre ceiling – with exposed ducts in true warehouse style – sits a massive six-metre-long bench. Adding to the sense of openness, the Freedom Kitchens joinery reads as furniture rather than being built-in. The black ceiling contrasts with crisp white walls that extend into an ‘air chimney’, a lantern roof that keeps the open-plan cool, generating cross-breezes and minimising the need for air-conditioning. “This is my dream kitchen not just because I love cooking – but also because it is so communal,” says Guy.
In the living room, Brosa ‘Studio’ club chairs covered in sheepskin. Timothy Oulton ‘Nirvana’ sofa from Coco Republic. SP01 ‘Mohana’ coffee table from Space and ‘Amara Ellipse’ coffee table from GlobeWest. Rug from Coppola Home.
In the opposing wing are the children’s media room and a guest room. Above this, up the spiral stairs, sits the main bedroom with an ensuite and generous walk-in, and Guy’s bells-and-whistles recording studio, while the other wing accommodates the two children’s bedrooms. Perched on the top level is the ‘cigar room’, an intimate club-like space with traditional wainscoting walls, a dramatic contrast to the clean finishes downstairs. The decoration of their home weds their slightly divergent tastes. “I like little pops of extravagance in colour and texture whereas Jules is minimalist and monochromatic, and likes a continuity of grey, black and white,” says Guy. “I think we have found a balance of the two.”
In the ‘cigar room’ on the top level, ‘Ally’ chair from Sofa & Soul. Sancal ‘Rew’ sofa from Ke-Zu. ‘Shiitake’ coffee table from Maker. Cafe Lighting & Living ‘Brooklyn’ drinks trolley from Interiors Online. Reflections Copenhagen ‘Diamond’ mirror from Jardan. De Marque Collection pre-finished oak flooring from Floormania. Joinery in Polytec ‘Ultramatt’ with Caesarstone top in Jet Black by Blank Joinery. Escea fireplace surrounded by Onyx marble wall panel from WK Stone. Wainscoting in Dulux ‘Reserved’.
They chose all their own furniture. Guy looks admiringly at the coffee table he selected in the living area, while Jules picked the smart dining room table, but she self-effacingly plays down their role in the accomplished whole. “Get the architecture and the design right – and Joe has taken care of that – and all it really needs is a coffee table book or a vase to finish it off.”
Both say they keep pinching themselves. “We didn’t grow up in houses like this,” says Guy. “Every day, we look at each other and say, ‘Why is this us?’ But there is beauty in feeling like an alien in your own space. You never fail to appreciate it.”
In the main ensuite, Kaldewei ‘Puro’ inset bath and Sussex ‘Circa’ basin tapware in Living Tumbled Brass, all from Reece. ‘Flynn’ mirrors from RJ Living. Artwork ‘Basic 01’ matt tiles in Glossy Green from Di Lorenzo. Carpet from Signature Floors.
“Emotion comes into it,” adds Jules. “It’s somewhere that you can raise children, invite friends and family. This is our home, beautiful and perfect. I love watching the flow of it and seeing where people land.” All that opens and shuts is automated, which the couple are still adapting to. “I thought it would be overwhelming, but it’s easy to set up. I get nerdy. Everything’s voice-activated,” says The Voice judge Guy with just a little irony. snellarchitects.com.au

After graduating as a journalist, I specialised in business press until I landed a position at a Sydney interior design and architecture magazine. I went on to take up senior editor roles on various publications in the homes area before opting to freelance as a writer, editor and content producer for magazines – including Belle, House & Garden, Inside Out, Home Beautiful and The Block – newspapers and websites, focusing on homes, design, gardens, food and travel. I have also written, edited and contributed to books specialising in these lifestyle areas. I really enjoy what I do – it combines my love of words with my passion for smart design and the built environment.

A peek inside Guy and Jules Sebastian’s ultra-modern Sydney home
Guy and Jules Sebastian have recently moved back into their modern Maroubra home after a long period of rebuilding and renovating.
Sharing images of their home on Instagram, Jules revealed that she was delighted with the finished result.
“Every last detail was important to us when we designed our home. We wanted the inside to be just as beautiful as the outside,” she said.
“[Guy] and I love to entertain, so creating an inviting outdoor area was essential in helping our guests feel relaxed and welcome.”
Jules also shared an image of their gorgeous bathroom, which boasts his and hers sinks, a terrazzo tile and black joinery, sinks and brass hardware.
The U-shaped home also features a tennis court, pool, open garage and views of the ocean.
Guy has also shared glimpses of the home’s interior, including a beautifully designed spiral staircase created by architect @joesnelldesign .

Guy, Jules and their two children moved into the home in June 2019 after the lengthy renovation process.
“It’s a long build, but it’s a pretty special house,” Guy confessed in a radio interview late last year. “It’s not normal. It’s not a cookie-cutter house, it’s cool.”

Guy Sebastian has finally given fans a glimpse inside his $3.1 million mansion, which is situated in Sydney's beachside suburb, Maroubra.
The Australian singer invited his The Voice team for a mentoring session in his kitchen on Tuesday night’s episode.

Guy and wife Jules Sebastian’s property has been surrounded in controversy after neighbours labelled the lengthy renovation process a “demolition nightmare” after their living room wall was damaged during the building process.
In an exclusive interview with WHO earlier this month, Guy – who is father to sons Hudson, 7 and Archer, 5 – opened up about finally owning his dream home.
It's a unique design - pretty out there,' he said. 'But we've chosen all the furniture, I found it all. That side of it has been easy.'

Home Tour: Guy & Jules Sebastian's New Sydney Home
When Australian singer and songwriter Guy Sebastian and his stylist wife, Jules , stumbled upon a 1400 square metre section in Sydney’s East, they instantly ‘fell in love’. The sheer size of the site and proximity to the beach was rare in that suburb – something they couldn’t pass by.
Guys and Jules relax in their living room which features a see-through indoor-outdoor Escea gas fireplace
They engaged architect Joe Snell of Snell Studio , and set about knocking down the existing 70-year-old bungalow to create a new, modern family home to share with their two children.
From the street Guy describes his new home as ‘fortress-like’ but for good reason – he leads a public life so feels the need to maintain certain barriers. However once you set foot in the U-shape three level, four bedroom home, you’re in for a welcome surprise.
The impressive statement spiral staircase is made from blackbutt hardwood and moulded steel with a rendered finish.
Materials of concrete, steel, glass and black and white dominate the design scheme, but are executed in a way that produces unexpected results – they combine to create a warm, inviting family home. Spaces flow gracefully one room to the next through large voids, statement spiral staircase and floor-to-ceiling glass while concrete isn’t just limited to the floors, but is used on the walls too.
The large open plan kitchen, dining and living room is designed for communal living and entertaining.
The home is filled with beautiful art and furnishings that reflects Jules’s minimalist style.
The foundations of the home that Snell designed provided the perfect backdrop for Guy and Jules to add their own design flair and personality. While Guy describes Jules style as more minimalistic, his style consists of ‘pops of extravagant in colour and texture’ – and you can tell they’ve striked just the right balance of the two. Their choices of furniture, art and soft furnishings meet somewhere magical in the middle.
The main ensuite features his and her vanities with feature terrazzo tiles and inset bath.
When it comes to function, the home shifts and adapts depending on the needs of the family. Whether it’s entertaining friends, an impromptu performance, or intimate family nights in, their home caters for it all.
Guy’s personality and style is evident in the top-level cigar room – vibrant velvet furniture, teal wainscoting and luxurious Onyx marble surrounds the Escea DS1650 fireplace .
The home design is U-shaped with dining table and sunken lounge in the central courtyard – perfect for summer entertaining.
The home overlooks an expansive backyard which houses both a swimming pool and tennis court – luxuries that Guy always dreamed of having.
Above all, Guy and Jules’s love of entertaining and personality shines through – the grand piano takes centre stage in the foyer and communal spaces have been strategically designed throughout. The end result is a stunning mix of contemporary architecture with the home-owners lifestyle and personalities in mind.
Stoke Fireplace Studio Sydney was thrilled to help Guy and Jules with their indoor fireplace selection and install. They chose the Escea DX1500 Indoor-Outdoor gas fireplace for the downstairs living room, while the Cigar Room on the top-level features the Escea DS1650 frameless gas fire.

Inside Guy and Jules Sebastian's Sydney home
- 14 Apr 2020
Guy and Jules Sebastian have opened the doors to their expansive Sydney home, giving fans a glimpse inside of their contemporary retreat.
WATCH: Inside Guy and Jules Sebastian's $3.1 million Maroubra mansion
"I'm going to be briefly hitting you with some house spam to show you our home which we just can't get used to," enthused Guy on Instagram.
"The house is all about privacy from the front but an enormous amount of natural light from the back. We made it clear from the start that we wanted loads of concrete and black steel - toughness in the architecture which is softened by the styling and landscaping."
Keen to take a look around? Let's get started...
Taking to Instagram, Jules Sebastian said that "every last detail was important to us when we designed our home. We wanted to inside to be just as beautiful as the outside."
The luxe bathroom is a vision in terrazzo and glossy black surfaces. The sleek lines are softened by curved brass tapware and a pair of round mirrors.
A white helical staircase designed by architect Joe Snell takes centre stage in the home, providing a perfectly theatrical backdrop to Guy's piano.
"I am constantly side swiped that this staircase lives in my house!" said Jules.
"It's like a marshmallow-y piece of art right there when you open the front door!"
Performance space
Floor to ceiling windows allow light to flood into the living areas.
"Since moving into our house, raising the blinds and letting that light in, the vibe is lighter, brighter and lifts my spirits.
"It’s pretty safe to say that @viridianglassaustralia and @awsaustralia nailed the ‘natural light’ brief! These windows are doing their job!" said Jules.
Living room
An expanse of concrete and black joinery sets the scene in the living room, which features a wall-mounted TV and an Escea fireplace. Kresta blinds come in handy on a hot day.
In this video, Jules takes us on a tour of her sons' room, which features a bunk bed and custom Freedom wardrobes.
The monochrome palette extends to the contemporary Freedom kitchen, which features an expanse of grey stone for the benchtop.
"This is a picture of it pre-ISO without the piles of husband, children and I splashed all over it," said Jules.
"I’ve always thought of the kitchen as the heart of the home, and now more than ever."
Dining room
Black custom cabinetry runs the length of the dining room, which features a long walnut table. Framed artworks and sculptures add colour and texture to the space.
The outdoor area has been given 5-star resort makeover, featuring a pergola, barbecue area and decking.
Powder room
A distinctive pedestal basin and floor-mounted mixer creates a modern mood in the powder room.
"It's kinda hard to see in photos these intricately geometric tiles that still manage to look minimal," said Guy.
Indoor/outdoor entertaining space
The living areas open up to create "one mega indoor/outdoor entertaining space", said Guy.
"Now we just need to make some friends to invite over!" he jokes.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.
Know More about this tour
We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews
This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.
We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!

Moscow Metro
The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.
What is the kremlin in russia?
The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.
And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
Paleontological finds
Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!
