The Best Travel Garment Bags

The best garment bags for travel can do double duty, keeping suits and dresses wrinkle-free and also offering space for accessories, shoes and even additional clothing. Better yet, they can be carried on to the plane and placed in the overhead bin (or, in some cases, a closet on board).

Read on to discover the best garment bags based on recent consumer reviews and travel expert insights. All of the recommended bags are considered carry-on compliant, though it's always a good idea to check your airline's carry-on size restrictions before flying.

(Note: Prices were accurate at the time of publication; they may fluctuate due to demand or other factors. Dimensions are listed in order of height by length by width.)

Best Overall: ZEGUR Suit Carry On Garment Bag

Folded dimensions: 23 x 22 x 4 inches | Weight: 2.86 pounds

What sets it apart: Available on Amazon for less than $70, the ZEGUR Suit Carry On Bag is a well-constructed garment bag at an approachable price. Offered in black and gray, this garment bag features a semirigid structure piping that allows it to secure clothing in place and prevent wrinkled garments, yet it folds in half for easy transport. The bag also offers inner pockets and an exterior zippered pocket that contains various compartments of its own, perfect for accessories like belts, socks and cuff links. Other convenient features include an adjustable, detachable shoulder strap and a trolley sleeve for securing the garment bag to other luggage.

Travelers appreciate: Reviewers consistently rave about this bag's durable design at an affordable price, noting it fits well in the overhead bin on planes.

Price: $64.75 or less

Best Duffel: Halfday The Garment Duffel – Original

Halfday The Garment Duffel – Original in cactus color against neutral background.

Folded dimensions: 12 x 22 x 12 inches | Weight: 2.3 pounds

What sets it apart: The Garment Duffel by Halfday is increasingly popular for its two-in-one design – so much so that it now comes in a variety of colors and patterns as well as two different sizes: Original and Compact.

The Original size holds suits and dresses plus a few days' worth of clothing, while the Compact bag is slightly smaller and ideal for dresses and shirts. Both bags feature an interior pocket (big enough for one pair of dress shoes), a water-resistant exterior with a pocket for small accessories, and a trolley sleeve.

Travelers appreciate: We recently tested The Garment Duffel and love the overall design and quality. When packing this bag, we highly recommend using packing cubes to maximize storage space and keep additional items organized. This will also make it easier for you to fish out any in-flight essentials (think: an e-reader and headphones) if you don't plan to bring a personal item (such as a backpack ) for those needs.

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

Best Rolling: Briggs and Riley Baseline 22" Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag

Courtesy of Briggs & Riley

Folded dimensions: 22 x 14 x 9 inches | Weight: 9.92 pounds

What sets it apart: Launched in 2022, the newest version of the Briggs & Riley Baseline Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag makes several improvements to the already well-rated luggage, including a beige lining, upgraded shock-absorbing wheels and an overall stronger build. Buyers have the option to monogram the garment bag as well.

The best part about this bag, however, is that it's a rolling carry-on suitcase and a garment bag in one, with separate compartments for a couple of suits, everyday clothing and accessories. These features include the brand's signature PowerPocket for charging your phone on the go as well as an exterior pocket, which offers quick access to security essentials such as your passport wallet and features an orange lining so you see if it is open.

Travelers appreciate: Recent reviewers say this investment piece is surprisingly spacious given its size, and that it has held up well for everything from business travel to international trips.

Price: $659 or less

Best Heavy-Duty: WallyBags 60" Deluxe Travel Garment Bag

Folded dimensions: 30 x 22 x 3 | Weight: 1.9 pounds

Travelers agree the WallyBags 60" Deluxe Travel Garment Bag is a lightweight yet sturdy choice for all forms of travel, noting it's strong enough to fit a wedding dress, tuxedo and shoes for destination weddings . The water-repellent bag is available in five colors and also offers durable handles that can be fastened to each other for easy carrying or attaching to other luggage.

Travelers appreciate: Owners of this bag like that it is lockable and folds easily once a dress or suit is placed inside – though some note a shoulder strap would be a helpful addition to this thoughtfully designed bag.

Price: $59.99 or less

Frequently Asked Questions

A garment bag is designed to prevent formalwear from getting wrinkled in transit. While you'll sometimes receive a complimentary garment bag with the purchase of a suit or gown, it'll typically be one made of thin material that can rip and fall apart very easily. That's why purchasing a quality garment bag for travel is a worthy investment, especially in the following scenarios:

  • You regularly travel for business.
  • You'd like to  pack dressy items for formal nights on a cruise , where clothing irons are prohibited.
  • You're attending or hosting a destination wedding.

Yes, most major airlines consider a garment bag to be carry-on luggage as long as it complies with carry-on size restrictions and can fit in the overhead bin.

The best garment bags can accommodate a couple of suits or several outfits. Many garment bags, such as The Garment Duffel by Halfday , feature additional storage space as well. Depending on the length of your trip, a garment bag may be the only luggage you need.

Why Trust U.S. News Travel

Amanda Norcross first discovered the importance of traveling with a quality garment bag after using a clunky old one she borrowed from her mom's closet. For her sister's all-inclusive resort wedding in Jamaica, she upgraded to a carry-on garment duffel bag to ensure her matron of honor dress remained wrinkle-free (and wow, what a difference). Along with these firsthand experiences, she consulted consumer ratings and reviews for dozens of garment bags to choose the best of the best for travel.

The 15 Best Travel Bags For Every Type Of Trip

The 15 best travel bags for every type of trip — from slings to weekenders, more from travel, r29 original series.

regent travel bags

The 8 best travel backpacks of 2024

Need lots of pockets for water bottles or tripods? Theft-deterrent zippers? A cushioned laptop compartment? No matter what kind of travel bag you need, we’ve got you covered.

Whether you’re traveling overnight or for weeks at a time, you'll need a backpack that's functional, comfortable, and helps keep you organized.

We know there's no one backpack that will work for everyone, so we picked bags that will meet the needs of most types of travelers—whether you need a small option for the overhead of a plane, or lockable zippers for security.

Our best overall travel backpack is the Peak Design Travel Pack 45L , which ticks all the boxes for durability, versatility, and comfort, but also offers a thoughtful design, unique organizational features and high-quality, sustainably made materials.

Our picks for the best travel backpack

Best overall: peak design travel pack 45l.

regent travel bags

Buy it now: $300 at Backcountry

Why we like it:   The sleek-looking Peak Design Travel Pack 45L is our best overall travel backpack. It's expandable, carry-on compliant, and is bursting with innovative features.

This backpack is functional—think gusseted side pockets for water bottles or tripods—and made with high-quality weatherproof materials and theft-deterrent zipper pulls. It’s durable and secure, and it’s obvious that every detail of this bag has been carefully thought through.

There are smartly placed pockets, and the padded harness system tucks beneath magnetic flaps for duffel-style carry. The spacious main cavity is accessible from the front, rear and both sides, and the extensively padded bag has 16-inch laptop and tablet sleeves.

Keep in mind:   At 4.5 pounds, it’s not light, and smaller-framed travelers may find it cumbersome to carry. The harness isn’t adjustable, so the torso length is one-size-fits-all.

Product details:   Sizes available: 30L, 45L | Materials:   Recycled nylon and polyester | Frame type: Frameless | Number of external pockets: 8

The best with laptop compartment: Thule Aion 40L

regent travel bags

Buy it now: $200 at Backcountry

Why we like it:   The Thule Aion 40L is our best backpack with a laptop compartment.   It’s a carry-on travel backpack that accommodates a 16-inch laptop while leaving plenty of room for other gear.

Its roomy side-access laptop compartment contains cushioned laptop and tablet sleeves. There’s a compartment for accessories and a rollaway bag for damp or dirty items in the main compartment, which minimizes the chances of wet belongings damaging tech.

There are breathable, padded shoulder straps and a back panel, plus a sternum strap to keep things secure. A robust side handle facilitates duffel-style carry, and there’s a pass-through for a rolling suitcase attachment.

Keep in mind:   There’s no weight-bearing hip belt, and the wax-coated canvas creates a weathered look that might not appeal to everyone.

Product details:   Sizes available: 28L, 40L | Materials: Recycled polyester | Frame type: Frameless | Number of external pockets: 2

The best small travel backpack: Patagonia Atom 20L Tote Pack

regent travel bags

Buy it now: $89 at Patagonia

Why we like it:   Our pick for the best small travel backpack is the Patagonia Atom 20L Tote Pack, a versatile, lightweight bag that stows under airplane seats. This backpack has a large main compartment, which houses a thickly padded removable 13-inch laptop sleeve and a hydration bladder pass-through for hikers.

External features include a bike light loop, attachment points for the removable sternum strap and other essentials, and a zippered front compartment that occupies the full length of the bag.

The well-padded, breathable harness system makes the Atom a comfortable carry in backpack mode, but it can also be transported tote-style using its sturdy handles.

Keep in mind:   The two compartments lack organizational features, and the laptop sleeve compromises internal space. The backpack fits a 17-inch torso length, so it may not work for taller travelers.

Product details:   Sizes available: 20L | Materials: Fairly traded recycled polyester and nylon | Frame type: Frameless | Number of external pockets: 3

The best anti-theft backpack: Pacsafe Venturesafe EXP35 Anti Theft Travel Backpack

regent travel bags

Buy it now: $270 at Amazon

Why we like it:   The Pacsafe’s practical, versatile Venturesafe EXP35 Anti Theft Travel Backpack is our pick for the best anti-theft backpack. It’s made with recycled slash-resistant material and lockable, puncture-resistant, self-locking zippers.

This pick has an RFID-blocking pocket to keep credit card information safe and a hidden lockable 16-inch laptop compartment. The comfortable, breathable harness system has cut-resistant straps that can be used to secure the bag to fixed objects.

Keep in mind:   The anti-theft features hamper quick access, and the bag’s solid construction and numerous compartments make it feel heftier than it is.

Product details:   Sizes available: 35L | Materials: Recycled polyester | Frame type: Frameless | Number of external pockets: 3

The best rolling backpack: Osprey Farpoint / Fairview 36 Wheeled Travel Pack

regent travel bags

Buy it now:   $300 at Osprey ( Farpoint and Fairview )

Why we like it:   The Osprey Farpoint/Fairview 36 Wheeled Travel Pack* is our pick for best rolling backpack. It’s comfortable in backpack mode, has a stamina-saving rolling mode, and is straightforward to switch between the two.

This bag features padded shoulder straps and hip belt, mesh back panel and torso adjustment to provide a comfortable backpack-style carry. If your back needs a break, engage the harness stowaway system, extend the single tube ergonomic handle and let the rugged, oversized wheels do the work.

Organizational features include a zippered top pocket for quick-access items and a 15-inch laptop compartment; the main cavity facilitates easy packing with its compression straps and suitcase-style opening.

*The bags’ features are identical; however, the Fairview’s fit is tailored specifically to women.

Keep in mind:   It’s a heavy bag, and the interior frame and stowed rolling handle reduce capacity in the main compartment.

Product details:   Sizes available: 36L, 65L | Materials: bluesign® approved recycled nylon | Frame type: 4 mm LightWire peripheral frame | Number of external pockets: 4

The best carry-on backpack: Cotopaxi Allpa 35l Travel Pack

regent travel bags

Buy it now:   $200 at REI

Why we like it:   The Allpa 35L Travel Pack from Cotopaxi is our best carry-on backpack—a durable, easily stowable option with thoughtful organizational features and anti-theft zippers.

The no-nonsense, adjustable harness system tucks away neatly into a slotted back panel during transit, while four reinforced grab handles make pulling the backpack out of an overhead bin child’s play. The bag opens suitcase-style for efficient packing, but a side zipper also provides on-the-go access.

High-visibility backing in the front compartment makes searching for small items less challenging, and there’s convenient side access to the padded 15-inch laptop sleeve, which has a false bottom to protect devices if dropped. There’s a rainfly included, should you arrive at your destination to unexpected wet weather.

Keep in mind:   Flimsy and lacking structure, it doesn’t hold its shape unless it is full. The lack of an external water bottle pocket may be a deal-breaker for some.

Product details:   Sizes available: 28L, 35L, 42L | Materials:   Recycled polyester and nylon | Frame type: Frameless | Number of external pockets: 2

The most versatile backpack: Gregory Rhune 25 Pack

regent travel bags

Buy it now:   $130 at REI

Why we like it:   Our pick for the most versatile travel backpack is the Gregory Rhune 25 Pack, a water-resistant travel backpack with great functionality and a surprising amount of space.

Thanks to its structured base, rounded body, and organizational compartments, more fits into this 25L bag than you’d expect. Padded internal sleeves fit a 15-inch laptop and tablet/folio, and pockets outside include a handy swing-around access stash pocket.

With a moisture-wicking padded back panel, removable sternum strap and contoured shoulder straps, this bag is designed to carry weight comfortably: a great all-rounder whether you’re a hiker, digital nomad, or urban sightseer.

Keep in mind:   Top-opening access makes it tricky to locate items at the base. Shoulder straps may feel bulky to smaller travelers.

Product details:   Sizes available:   20L, 22L, 25L | Materials: Recycled polyester and nylon | Frame type:   Frameless | Number of external pockets: 4

The best budget backpack: tomtoc Navigator-T66 Travel Laptop Backpack 40L

regent travel bags

Buy it now:   $82 at Amazon

Why we like it:   The Navigator-T66 Travel Laptop Backpack 40L is our pick for the best budget travel backpack. It’s made with quality materials and loaded with organizational features despite its affordable price tag.

The sturdy, water-resistant, and easy-to-pack clamshell design, plus the multi-functional pockets and attachment points, mean efficient organization. This backpack has a TSA-friendly 17-inch laptop compartment, which will save time at airport security.

The cushioned harness means it’s comfortable to wear, and top and side handles and a pass-through make it easy to grab or attach to a wheeled suitcase.

Keep in mind:   It’s so heavily padded that packing space feels compromised. There’s no load-bearing hip belt.

Product details:   Sizes available:   40L | Materials:   Recycled PET bottles | Frame type:   Frameless | Number of external pockets:   4

Our review process

I referred to brand product descriptions, third-party reviews, competitor articles, Reddit discussion boards, watched an excessive number of review videos, and evaluated my findings with my own knowledge and experience, considering the following:

Material and quality: Durability of materials and hardware is critical for a bag that will be repeatedly thrown into overhead bins and exposed to bad weather.

Versatility: I looked for bags that could be carried duffel-style, fastened to a rolling suitcase or pulled-on wheels and were capable of protecting tech equipment, and keeping belongings dry on hikes.

Storage and protection: I looked for features such as stowable harness systems for ease of storage, and hidden pockets and anti-theft zippers for peace of mind.

Comfort: Weight-bearing, cushioned hip belts, secure sternum straps and adjustable padded shoulder straps all maximize carry comfort.

Organization: Positioning and accessibility of pockets, compartments and attachment points are a matter of personal preference, but they should maximize functionality.

Sustainability: I prioritized bags made with recycled materials and brands actively addressing their social, ethical and environmental impact.

What to know about travel backpacks

Here are a few things to consider when buying a travel backpack:

The most common materials used for travel backpacks are nylon and polyester (both increasingly recycled), which can be treated to enhance durability and water resistance.

The size of a travel backpack is measured in liters, with external pockets included. How much it actually fits depends on shape, material thickness, flexibility, and padding.

Backpacks with heavy external frames offer structure and support. Internal frames hold bags closer to the body, offering more stability but less ventilation.

Number of external pockets

External compartments such as mesh water bottle holders and quick-grab pockets are great for organization.

Carry-on weight allowances vary between airlines, so a lightweight bag optimizes what you can pack.

Look for high-quality harnesses with cushioned straps, breathable back panels, secure sternum straps, and a weight-bearing hip belt if required.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best backpack to take on a plane.

Choose a backpack that fits in an overhead bin and has a robust handle for retrieving it. Quick-access external pockets and efficient internal organization enable quick access to belongings; lockable zippers provide security.

Is a travel backpack a carry-on?

As long as it complies with your airline’s regulations.

What is a good size backpack to travel with?

The length and purpose of your trip will determine the size of the bag you need. Generally speaking, a 25-30 liter backpack should suffice for weekend trips, and 30-45 liters allow a good amount of space for longer travel. For most airlines, backpacks up to 45 liters should be carry-on compliant.

Thank god, was hoping they would add a 34 slot still even though they also added a 5th bag slot. Those bags with 2 slots missing really annoy me like the 32 slot bag

I was expecting huge reagent bags, like 60 slotters. Surprised

I was expecting huge reagent bags, like 60 slotters. Surprised well theyre also increasing stack size to 1000 for reagents so less stacks of stuff

Comment by TheGoldenElm

Hopefully, they'll also return to trying to keep inventory fillers to a minimum, unlike Shadowlands which exploded in BoP junk.

But looks like there's a 36 slot bag, too, so it should work out fine.

Comment by Maizou

36 is actually the current maximum for individual cooking, enchanting, engineering, gem, herb, inscription, leatherworking, mining, and fishing bags, though this new line does not appear to be associated to just one profession. Presumably, they will be able to hold reagents from all of them, making it a little more versatile (if a little less organized) It's because we get a 5th bag slot in Dragonflight that can *only* hold a Reagent Bag. It can't hold a regular bag or a profession bag. Just Reagent.

Comment by Forion

Hope they also add new slots to the bank.

Hope they also add new slots to the bank. Good point. I'd like to see expanded void storage slots as well as another bag added to the bag / regents storage expanded.

Comment by wowdm6

need more reagent space in the bank, all those past expansions reagents don't fit, had to make alts just to take older crafting stuff Also could do with being able to have more bags in the bank The number of extra slots from the new bags considering the likelihood of loads of new stuff we will have to carry and store is pretty poor. Also those things they keep adding that should be toys, just make them toys Things like Garrison stones, either make them a toy or just a spell your character has, same for dalaran hearth stone, boralas teleport ring, direbrew remote. must have a fair few of those taking up space

Thank god, was hoping they would add a 34 slot still even though they also added a 5th bag slot. Those bags with 2 slots missing really annoy me like the 32 slot bag 32 slot bags are actual the ones with full lines, a 34 slot bag will have the two missing slots. But looks like there's a 36 slot bag, too, so it should work out fine. Dont worry, they added the bagnon-style interface for bags. You can now ''merge'' them into one giant bag - at worst, you'll have one line that is not full. If they let us choose the amount or lines/columns like bagnon does, we may have only full lines. need more reagent space in the bank, all those past expansions reagents don't fit, had to make alts just to take older crafting stuff Also could do with being able to have more bags in the bank The number of extra slots from the new bags considering the likelihood of loads of new stuff we will have to carry and store is pretty poor. I mean, if you decide to hoard, you have to face the conséquences. AH will be merged too, so even on a dead server you virtually will always have old expansion reagents available and cheap (excluding the maybe 50 (?) extremely rare/expensive/BoP items, which should easily fit in your reagents bank). I've deleted all teleport items except my main city Hearthstone since the ''portal in main city'' update. You're 5 minutes away from 99% of the zones. You don't need to keep any other Hearthstone unless you're changing expansion every 15 minutes. Again, if you decide to hoard, face the consequences. I've got nothing against hoarding, but four 32-slots bag + bank + reagents bank should be enough to carry and keep everything you will ever really need. I don't like games with ''infinite'' bags because it usually end up being a mess or having 9999 something that I'll never use and that would be better sold at the AH for some actually useful gold. Edit : Though, not gonna lie, it makes me lol seeing people with +2 agi scrolls complaining that they don't have enough space. Like yeah, ofc. This game has tens of thousands of items, but realistically, you'll use like 1% of them before quitting. TLDR : sell those goddam peaceblooms.

Funny that, the only teleport item I'm not carrying around is the normal hearthstone because there's about 15 toys that function as a hearthstone so there's no need for one.

Was hoping based off the interview with Ion that the reagent bags would be a lot bigger.

Comment by glassleo

I was expecting huge reagent bags, like 60 slotters. Surprised I wouldn't be surprised if 36 is just a placeholder number, especially considering they are both the same size. IIRC 36 was the largest size a bag could be due to some technical limitations so they might just not have solved that yet.

Comment by Snowflakesz

New extra bag slot! New non-specific reagent bag! HOLY @#$%, what a glorious addition! And you people are COMPLAINING? SMH.

Comment by tarc

I actually still have a few chars that use the old 36-slot reagent bags, kinda got used to em. Any idea if you can use the old ones in this new 5th-slot?

Comment by Snagprophet

Seems good. I'm a terrible hoarder for random items, particularly the on use ones with one charge that I carry round but never use, but I imagine I'll end up with the same problem just with an extra bag. I have to regularly get rid of things to really not be cluttered.

Flight Travel w/ Britax Regent?

  • Thread starter mom2owen1

My two ds' and I are flying cross country w/out hubby in a couple months. DS1 is 2 YO and is in a Regent. My instruction manuel says it is NOT airline approved, which means I need to check it. Can anyone recommend a travel bag that will fit this huge seat? DS2 is 4 months old and is DS1's old carseat, an Evenflo Triumph. I haven't checked yet to see if this is airline approved, but if it is I am considering taking it onboard with me for DS1. DS2 has to be a lapchild. I am a bit overwhelmed at the thought of not checking both seats curbside. I will have DS1 on my back in an Ergo and DS2 on my front in a Mei Tai, plus diaper bags, etc. Not sure how I will manage us and a seat. I know there was a recent thread about bags, but thought I would start a new one since I need one big enough to hold a Regent, which that thread didn't mention. Thanks! Kris

All US seats are FAA approved (as long as they are used as a harnessed seat - no boosters on planes). The exceptions are the Regent and Columbia Special needs seats 'cause they're so huge. If DS is in a Regent, can he still fit (height/weight) in the Triumph? Another seat often recommended for travel is the Cosco Scenera. It's cheap, light weight and has relatively high top slots for a convertible seat. As far as managing all the "Stuff:" I'd look into a stroller (something a bit more substancial than an umbrella) that's pretty lightweight, folds flat, but is sturdier than an umbrella (I'm rather biased against the 'cheap' umbrellas - they're too short and are hard to push). The stroller can hold stuff and/or kids. OR There are several threads that talk about strapping a carseat onto a luggage rack and then pushing/pulling a child in the carseat. OR Rent one of the airport luggage carts to pile everything onto. Many of them have a spot for kids like a grocery cart. I'd think that one of the above + a decent rolling carry on bag (bungee the 2nd seat to that and gate check + a duffle to hold the "gotta get to it while flying" snacks, toys, diapers & wipes would do the trick without being totally awkward. You would still need to carry one, but the other could ride. There are several frequent flyers on the board. Check some older threads about planes/flying for info and even photos. Safe Travels.

Heya! Wow, I'm actually ANSWERING a question for once, and not just asking questions! I have DS (6) in a Regent/Husky and DD (2.5) in a Britax Wizard. We go to the UK often (my inlaws are there) and so I think we've become experts on plane travel with carseats. Here's my sage advice - don't travel with the Regent/Husky. Too big, too hard to manage, etc etc etc! Your kids are still pretty little, so a booster wouldn't be good (that's what we have for DS when we travel, though I like him in a 5 point harness at home!). Can you buy some lightweight carseat that's reasonably cheap for when you travel? Or borrow one from a friend? I just am not terribly keen on the whole "checking carseats as luggage" in just a softsided carrier. Seems like they might get banged around a lot, right? Someone who's more knowledgeable than I am - is there any concern about carseats being "compromised" by being banged around in luggage? I know you don't want to use a carseat after it's been in a crash, and I somehow envision the handling while loading/unloading and in the cargo hold to be equivalent to a crash! Heheh. You know what I would do? Is the baby small enough to be in an infant carrier? How about putting the baby back into the infant carrier and having your older kid sit in the baby's carseat (assuming he still fits) and sit in that on the flight. If you are able to, I think it's MUCH safer to have a kid sit in a carseat rather than just in the airplane seat. Plus, kiddo will be more comfy and more likely to nap. Hehehe. Hope that's helpful! The Recaro Young Sport and Cosco Apex (I think...the website doesn't say it IS approved) are also not ok on an airplane, even harnessed, so rule those out as travel seats.

I also would not luggage check, only gate check if you are going to check. There is no garentee that your carseat will make it onto the plane. The airlines do loose things. I would not travel with the Regent either. It is expensive and not worth it breaking. I would try the youngest in an infant seat if you have one or see if a friend has one you could borrow. Do you have any friends that have a SafeSeat1 (the infant seat that goes to 30 pounds)? If not I would get DS2 into a Cosco Scerena or a combo like the Graco Cargo or an Evenflo. I would buy a lugguage hauler and connect a convertible to it and strap DS2 in. The you could either put DS1 in a stroller or your front or back pack. Stefanie

If you're still looking for travel bags, we have two different ones, both can fit the Britax Wizard. I know one was bought at Babies-r-us, it's called: Safefit - Cover N' Carry Car Seat Protector. I forget the other but Safefit was a little easier to use, it has wheels & collapses nicely. The other had a little better padding but no wheels. Both have straps to carry like a back pack. If you're taking the seat for car travel once you arrive more so than the flight itself & you'll be renting a car at the other end you can probably rent them from the car rental place. This would make the airport/flight a lot easier. Car seats & kids on a flight is pretty tricky. We expected the "pre-boarding" announcement for people needing extra time but there was none so we were part of the cattle run to get 2 2year olds & their seats on board. Not fun. On the return we asked the gate folks for a minute head start & at first they balked but eventually agreed to let me in to attach the seats then come back & board when everyone else did. (This was American Airlines) Check the airline you're on for "traveling w/kids" info. I just checked AA & they mentioned a device called "CARES" Child Aviation Restraint System. that looks like straps that attach to the seat, easy to pack up when not using. But at $75.00 each that may not be the best solution. Good luck & enjoy the trip, DD (Dad to Owen & his 2 brothers)

The first time we flew with my son he was less than 1 year. I bought a ticket and my husband balked. He agreed to keep the ticket there and we would decide whether to cancel the return ticket. When we arrived at our destination he agreed it was the best money we ever spent. The relief knowing he was safe in his seat made the flight go so smoothly. They reduce the rates for kids <2 significantly, but you have to call directly. Every flight we have been on has allowed us to preboard, get the stroller and seat situated before boarding the rest of the flight. I loved our roundabout, but now my son is too big and we took a graco cargo on the last flight and now have a radian to fly with. I can't imagine carrying a triumph through the airport and would see if a friend would trade carseats for the week. My friend did that the last time she flew so she wouldn't have to take her triumph. I wish you luck...travel with kids is always entertaining.

I'm not sure why people are recommending renting a luggage cart. My experience in many airports has been that they are not allowed past security. Afterall, you, are not supposed to have a lot of stuff by the time you get there. Definitely take a stroller that you can gate check. They give you a tag at the gate and you roll it to the end of the jetway, fold it up and leave it right as you get on the plane. We have a Radian and the carry case. I find the carry case too tight and the straps uncomfortable, but I have to admit it worked fine. If you can do that, with the infant in front, and the older one in the stroller, then the kids are taken care of. If you are taking a double stroller, as we always do, you can wedge the second car seat in the other part of the double stroller. Then the diaper bag hangs off the end of the stroller handles. Don't forget if you take diaper rash cream or anything it should be less than 3 ounces. I only got stopped once with one over that amount, but they let me keep it. I will not take it in the future (that was a mistake). I understand about the price of the tickets as we were faced with that issue many times. Excuse me for differing with everyone -- while it is most definitely safer to have a child strapped in a car seat, I think the risk is very very low of having a problem with a lap child. I'd be willing to bet that most people on this board take higher risks elsewhere (e.g. talking on a cell phone while driving). As for pre-boarding, only once was I on a flight where it actually wasn't allowed. Many other times they didn't pre-board explicitly but if you asked they would let you do it. Get yourself up to the front and on the plane first -- it is better for you AND the other passengers. On the other hand, I would not recommend being pushy about getting 3 seats and displacing other passengers. Those of you who think this is always possible -- I beg to differ. The last several flights I have taken have been 100% full. Plus, I think it is irresponsible for people to come on with kids and then be demanding about where they sit and how they sit. Of course certain requirements need to be met (e.g. child sitting next to parent). We have considered a small car seat that actually fits in a suitcase, and checking it through that way because they do get banged up when checked in (we used to do this, and stopped). We haven't done the check-with-suitcase yet though. Last of all, have fun! It's really not that bad. My guess is your older one will rise to the occasion and help you. My kids get a kick out of security and taking off backpacks and shoes, listening to instructions about when to go through the metal detector, etc.

There is a lot of information in this post to consider. I thought I would add just a little. We will be traveling for the first time with our DS (9months) in April and I have been reading a lot on this forum and many others. We decided to buy a Scenera as a travel seat. It is much lighter and smaller then most others and at $39 you cant go wrong. We will use it for the trip and then have it as a spare or loaner. Also we really wanted to get a smaller stroller for travel and decided on the Chicco caddy stroller. It got good reviews and was on sale on Amazon. We have not tried it out yet other than just around the house but it seems like it will be good. It is basically an umbrella stroller with a little bit extra, it folds up small, it quite lightweight, and comes with its own bag you can put it in when you gate check it. We are think we can put the car seat in the stroller at the airports but I want to make sure it will be safe first. One last note, many people keep posting that there are discount airfares for children, there are few if any airlines left that offer these discounts for domestic travel.

There is a difference between renting a luggage cart, and purchasing a small luggage rack from Walmart (14.99). I personally don't want to put my kid in a blanket under the seat in front of me (especially since this is where I've shoved said luggage rack from WM, the corresponding bungees, ds's carry-on and my diaper bag)... so, a plane ticket is the way to go. This trip can count as your "I didn't no better!" trip, next time, if at all possible, get the 2nd seat. (But believe me, I do understand the not necessarily possible scenerio. We just flew recently, after I knew better... and It just wasn't possible to get a seat for the baby. We were lucky enough to have a seat available for him on 3 of 4, and on the 4th, we flew 1st class, it was so packed.) Luggage racks are awesome. Oh, if your younger one fits in any infant carrier, I recommend using that. Substantially easier.

I'd figure out a way to strap the two Sceneras together, maybe buckle one harness into the buckle of another? Then put them on a luggage trolley together and strapped on. Then DS1 on your back, DS 2 on your front (please take a picture of that! LOL), and the diaper bag draped over the handle of the luggage trolley. Click to expand...
