Four top travel themes for 2022 according to o.a.t. tours.

Mid-2022 may be the time that travel finally starts to return to norms. With that in mind, Overseas Adventure Travel (O.A.T.) , a tour company specializing in personalized small group and solo-friendly travel for Americans ages 50-plus, announced its top four travel themes for the year ahead.

“Our travelers are very optimistic,” said Brian FitzGerald, Chief Marketing Officer. “From seasoned travelers to solos traveling on their own for the first time, people are making plans to start seeing the world again, especially those places that they’ve vowed to see in their lifetimes.”

The company resumed travel in July 2021 and brought 11,000 travelers to more than 30 countries. In 2022, nearly 69,000 travelers have reserved travel with them, typically to 85 countries. Groups are limited to 16 travelers (average of 13) by land and 25 (average of 22) by sea. Here are the four themes:

A young tourist on her own.

1. Solo surge – With recent Omicron pandemic surges currently receding and vaccines and testing available, people who have been putting their dreams on hold because of health and safety concerns are ready to go. And if friends or spouses won’t join them, they are no longer waiting: they are stepping out of their comfort zones and booking solo.

O.A.T. has seen a 17 percent uptick in the number of solo travelers since 2019. The company just added 2,000 more single spaces in 2022—92 percent of which have free single supplements.

Solo travelers — the majority of whom are women with O.A.T. — often find small group tours appealing because they meet and spend time with others easily when they want, and can also have alone time.

2. Small ship s – With the much-publicized problems of cruising in this pandemic period, ships with fewer people are more attractive to travelers in 2022 . At O.A.T., bookings for small ships in 2022 are up 10 percent compared to 2019. More than 14,000 travelers are scheduled to travel with them through 2022.

Travelers are also attracted to small-ship travel for the opportunity to visit remote and smaller ports, and the chance to mingle in small groups with locals in a less touristy way. That doesn’t happen when hundreds of passengers disembark from a large ship.

3.  Sustainable travel – “ How can we travel more responsibly?” is a question with travelers of all ages. Travelers’ interest in environmental travel dovetails with initiatives such as the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism ,   which is spurring on the travel industry to track and improve travel’s impact on the environment.

For some travelers, sustainable travel involves ecological conservation. For others, it is seeking out destinations where their travel dollars will have a positive impact on the local community – for example, benefiting its economic development. Travelers are highly interested in O.A.T.’s trips to the Arctic, Norway and Galapagos.

I wrote about green travel in an earlier Forbes article. Outdoor travel with respect for nature is an obvious start for travelers of all ages, and for family trips.

A longer trip allows for independent exploration.

4.  Longer trips – Travelers want to make the most of airfare deals. Others feel the urge to make up for lost time due to the pandemic, and want to immerse in a different culture and engage with the locals. This results in more longer trips planned for 2022.

At O.A.T., 55 percent of solo travelers who reserved for future travel have opted to arrive early before a trip or stay later after the tour concludes. Extending a trip by can help a traveler to acclimate. Staying later after the group departs allows time for independent exploring and offers a chance to savor the experience a bit longer.

With 2023 departures of many adventures already open, O.A.T. reports nearly 9,000 are looking ahead. Let’s hope for healthy travel opportunities to continue and improve.

Overseas Adventure Travel —more commonly referred to as OAT (saying the letters as opposed to naming the grain)—is a small-group tour specialist with tours on all continents. As its name suggests, tours with Overseas Adventure Travel tend to be fairly active, so participants should be comfortable with six to eight hours of activity each day, including walking distances ranging from three to six miles.

OAT has a great reputation for its solo guest focus (more on that below), and offers a generous number of no-additional-cost single spots on its tours. It also has women-exclusive departures on many itineraries.

BEST OF THE BEST: Best Tour Companies for Guided Tours

On OAT tours, accommodations tend to be less about amenities and more about authenticity. Another thing to note is that airfare is often bundled into the up-front price of the tour (unless you specify that you want to book your own travel). OAT is one of the family of Grand Circle Corp. companies, also including Grand Circle Travel and Grand Circle Cruise Line.

TourScoop Takeaways

  • Countries: OAT has tours on every continent

Credibility Check

Overseas Adventure Travel is BBB accredited with a rating of A+. It’s an active member of the United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA). The OAT website posts verified guest reviews on each tour page (sometimes with hundreds of reviews) so it’s easy to see what past travelers think of each tour.

For 2024, OAT has 80 itineraries that include tours on every continent. Some of the most popular tours are to destinations in Italy, Egypt, and multi-country tours in Africa and around the Adriatic.

Overseas Adventure Travel gives all its tours an Activity Level Rating that ranks tours from one (easy) to five (strenuous) to help travelers find the right fit. It has both women-only departures and many no-additional-cost single traveler spots on tours.

There are multi-country and single country tours. On many tours, OAT creates spaces for discussion and learning with its Controversial Topics program that covers topics such as Scottish independence on its Scotland Revealed itinerary and female genital mutilation on its Safari Serengeti: Tanzania Lodge & Tented Safari tour.

Tour Guides

OAT’s tour guides are called Trip Experience Leaders. All are fluent in English and have a range of skills, certifications, and experience specific to the tour destination and experience. Trip Experience Leaders focus on both the logistical and the experiential, and help connect travelers with destinations by sharing firsthand insight that brings a destination to life.

OAT does right by its strong solo traveler base —in 2024, the company is offering 25,620 single spaces—91% of which are free (the remaining 9% of single spots have what OAT says is the lowest single supplement in the industry). And a number of itineraries also have women-exclusive departures.

Then, two weeks before departure, travelers receive all their final documents, and are also contacted by their Trip Experience Leader. Any additional questions can be directed to OAT’s customer service email or phone number.

About Travel Impressions

French Impressions‪:‬

The adventures of an american family, publisher description.

In 1950, as many families were establishing lives in suburbia, Mary and Frank Littell decided to uproot their young family from the comfort of their home in the United States and move to France for a year. Now, decades later, their son John S. Littell, who was four years old at the time of their French exploration, brings his mother’s journals to life and tells the story of living in the working-class town of Montpellier from her perspective. French Impressions: The Adventures of an American Family chronicles one family’s adventures abroad, as Mary struggles to maintain a home in a new culture and to cook the local cuisine, while Frank traverses to various bars and nightly reads Great Expectations to his toddlers. These often comedic and heartening familial struggles will at once seem familiar and lost to the times gone by.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY SEP 4, 2000

"No normal people, unless facing imminent arrest, would even contemplate such madness," Littell says of the year his family spent in France in the early 1950s. Frank Littell, John's father, enrolled at the University of Montpellier on the G.I. Bill, taking his wife, Mary, and his young sons along. The tales of the family's experiences in the south of France are told from the perspective of Mary, whose diaries and other writings form the basis for this memoir. With Frank busy at school, Mary is left to fend for herself and to try to make herself at home in the strange city. A self-described dunce at learning languages, she struggles to communicate with the locals, while her children, four-year-old John and 15-month-old Stephen, effortlessly switch between English and French. Mary recounts with self-deprecating humor the disastrous Thanksgiving dinner when, unable to procure a turkey, she unknowingly cooks a swan; her encounters with the "O-la-la ladies" (so-called for their invariable reaction to Mary's decadent American buying habits) during her daily shopping trips; and her horror when she discovers she has been ordering alcoholic cider for Stephen at their local watering hole. Inevitably, despite such obstacles, intrepid Mary and her family win the hearts of their neighbors and settle into the pace of life in Montpellier. Charmingly related with Mary's dry wit, the anecdotes that make up this memoir are amusing if dated. B&w photos.

We are experienced travelers and can accommodate to much inconvenience and difference in customs. Generally we are not demanding. I have to tell you that our departure from Russia and arrival in Tallinn, Estonia was a great relief.

Both Moscow and St. Petersburg contain some beautiful architectural wonders. Most things are BIG, BIG. But be prepared to be treated with less respect than you are used to and definitely do not expect gastronomic delights. Bring lots of money.

But you know what I still love New York and Melbourne.

Do not let these doom mongers put you off, people are people the world over, good and bad, that's what makes it interesting.

We were on a budget in Moscow and eat a great meal in GUM, canteen 57, £14.93p for two, what's that about 20 US dollars, and we never spent anywhere near 8 dollars for coffee, where you drinking at the Ritz?

oat travel french impressions

As for food, I tend to eat in simpler places, including, as posted under Top Questions, some buffets with very reasonable prices, and no bad quality food.

In any event, agree...don't let gloomy guses get you down. Go enjoy...just try to tune out what might appear to be "gloomy" faces...everything is relative, and to a Russian this is just one's average face as compared to US faces, which do tend to often have large smiles on them (to the amusement of most Russians!)

oat travel french impressions

I am sorry for the experience which the traveler perceived as bad. In a sense, I have understanding as I imagine he/she would be traveling with certain expectations and certain prejudices.

However, I thought this comment was horrible to read:

> I have decided that the people in Paris are a delight compared to those in Moscow.

oat travel french impressions

Well, I beg to differ on that one - I don't generally find that to be the case in Paris. The occasional person having a bad day, sure, but that happens everywhere. Even in Russia!

But, unlike the OP, I can count the grumpy people I met in Russia on one hand - a bank teller in Moscow , a waitress in Arkhangelsk. Probably just having a rotten day. There was a lady in an office in St Petersburg who was in a flap but that was because I mistook her office door for the entrance to the Museum of the History of the Political Police (which was unmarked) - and it wasn't surprising that she was emphatic that I retrace my steps immediately. (So I don't really count her as grumpy.)

Everyone else was fine and often more than fine - friendly and helpful once you got past "hello". Conversational. Smiling, even. (Shock! Horror!)

At least the OP liked a few things - so the trip can't have been a total write off.

And your immigration officer officer at my exiting Melbourne Airport, a fine advert for OZ

As I said, it can happen anywhere :)

Ditto: I can't seem to remember a single case of rudeness or snubbiness in Paris. Wait, maybe that's because I speak French? Ironically, I very well remember an arrogant and generally unpleasant waiter in California.

' class=

" Ironically, I very well remember an arrogant and generally unpleasant waiter in California."

My city is full of arrogant, unpleasant people, dealing with them is a daily hazard. I frequently have to remind myself that many of them moved here from other parts of the country trying to make it in one of the glamour professions. Those professions attract jerks, to put it mildly. New York and D.C. have the same problem.

I found some Parisians very rude, and a couple of them outright hostile, but it came exclusively from men. I have no explanation for this. Parisian rudeness towards Americans in general might be explained by insecurity caused by a perceived loss of cultural, economic, and political hegemony in the post-WWII world to a country full of uncouth brats (we are), or maybe I'm just overthinking things on an internet tourist board while I watch the World Cup.

> My city is full of arrogant, unpleasant people

It was not in LA, but in a hotel in Yosemite NP of all places ;)

7 First Impressions of Moscow, Russia (From a Street Photography Perspective)

moscow-impressions-cover

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the second largest city in Europe by population. It’s an urban, cosmopolitan city of the highest level, with more than enough glitz to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of European and Russian that makes it stand out on its own. And the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen.

moscow-sf-19

So here are my first impressions of Moscow, from my personal Street Photographer perspective…

7 First Impressions of Moscow  (From a Street Photography Perspective)

1. big city with so much to discover.

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

moscow-sf-15

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

moscow-sf-12

2. Museum Metro

oat travel french impressions

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

moscow-sf-18

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

moscow-sf-35

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to definitely check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

3. Not as walkable as Saint-Petersburg

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have a lot of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

moscow-sf-45

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

moscow-sf-52

4.  Gorky Park is like a Russian Central Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

moscow-sf-30

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Half the city under construction

European cities in general seem to be filled with more construction than usual lately. But while this won’t be true forever, Moscow was filled with the most I’ve ever seen. Moscow already has the most skyscrapers in Europe, with many being less than a decade old. In only the last few years, the three tallest skyscrapers in Europe have opened here, giving it five of Europe’s ten tallest. The 2018 FIFA Word Cup is bringing much of this on, but the city is pushing to complete a skyline here than will rival any in the world.

moscow-sf-51

The recession has slowed down the construction some, but the government is pushing it on. So all over the city, there were sidewalks covered with wood boards and lined with striped construction walls. At first, it was a little disappointing from a street photography perspective to see so much blocked by construction. After a while, though, it became something to capture. The striped construction materials and signs are colorful and all the workers created some interesting activity. It will be interesting to see what the city looks like when everything is complete, but for now, the construction provides interest itself.

moscow-sf-42

6. Learn the Russian Alphabet

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, it can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

moscow-sf-17

7. Where East Meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with a museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more European package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline and modernities with soviet emblems and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

moscow-sf-26

It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet nostalgia, and a whole lot more.

Russia’s Metropolis

Moscow is famous around the world, but it might not be completely what you expect from Russia’s capital. The city’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it brings something changed over time since its Soviet days. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. Most might say it feels more like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

moscow-sf-48

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

If any of you have been to Moscow before, tell me about your experience and impressions of the city and country in the comments below! And stay tuned for more on Moscow, including some of the best Street Photography shots I captured while there.
