Seemingly tucked away in the corner of the world, the British Isles nonetheless exert a world-wide influence that belies their small size. English literature buffs familiar with Shakespeare, Jane Austen, or the Romantic Poets will relish Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, the Lake District , and Bath, while amateur historians will enjoy visits to medieval castles, the Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral. In Scotland, experience the local culture – ‘neeps and tatties’, the Edinburgh military tattoo, and local whiskey ; while in Wales , enjoy our walking tour of its unjustly neglected coastline.

Across the St George’s Channel (Irish sea), our visits to Dublin take in Ireland’s tangible historical remnants – the Book of Kells, O’Connell Street, and St Patrick’s Cathedral – in order to understand its turbulent history. We also offer a trip off the beaten path to see Northern Ireland, including the Giant’s Causeway. And wherever we are, our itinerary always takes time to journey into the British Isles spectacular scenery: England’s Cotswold and quaint villages; Snowdonia National Park in Wales ; the Scottish highlands and Loch Lomond; and Ireland’s Cliffs of Moher and Killarney National Park (on the Ring of Kerry). For those mature and senior travellers seeking a small group tour of the British isles and small group tours of Ireland and Scotland 2020 – 2021 we offer over 100 departures from our small group tour of the British isles collection each year.

Odyssey’s tours to Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales are all an escorted tour with a tour manager often accompanied by a knowledgeable local tour guide. Whether your are on a Ireland tour for the first time or a Scotland tour heading for the Scottish highlands, our tour director will have the itinerary for your sightseeing tour planned out. If you are on walking tours of England Scotland and Ireland, then on this walking holiday your tour manager will have the coach ready for ready for the hike into the countryside, over rolling hills, pausing in quaint villages for lunch. We enjoy preparing for each tour to ensure whatever small group tour or walking holiday you choose that we have prepared for your trip.

When is the best time to go on your UK trip?

The best time to visit the United Kingdom is in spring (late March to early June) and autumn (September to November), when it’s usually warm and dry. You’ll see beautiful spring flowers or the leaves changing hue in autumn, and avoid the much busier summer period.

Why choose a small group tour?

Odyssey specialises in educational small group tours , for seniors , typically groups between 6 to 12 people, and no more than 18 travellers. Odyssey has been offering this style of adventure and educational programs, since 1983.

We offer a wide range of educational, cultural and heritage journeys that expand horizons and broaden the mind. Our tours are designed for active, inquisitive travellers in a small group environment.

What's the accommodation like on a group tour?

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our long stay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

What ages are the group holidays suitable for?

Whether travelling solo, in a couple, or with friends, Odyssey Traveller caters primarily for travellers over 50, over 60, over 70 or 80 years of age. Therefore, your travelling companions are sure to share your interests. They will want similar experiences in an environment of mutual understanding. We design all programs with the mature traveller in mind. Travelling solo does not mean travelling alone, so when there’s free time to explore you’re sure to have another solo traveler or couple ready to join you if you wish. Single travelers make about a third of our groups and many a repeat travelers!

How big are the group sizes on your tours?

Odyssey specialises in educational small group tours , for seniors , typically groups between 6 to 12 people, and averages at 12 participants per tour, a mix of singles and couples.

First solo trip with Odyssey?

Odyssey offers a collection of genuine small group tour(s) Odyssey tours are priced to reflect that these are small group tours. Typically this means you are part of a small group of 6 to 12 people, not part of a group of 18 or more. Small group means you and fellow traveller enjoying an evening meal around one dinner table. So, we do not achieve the economies of scale of 18 plus on a coach that a larger tour operator would offer, because this is not the type of trip or touring experience our clients seek from us.

Odyssey tours are genuinely based around;

  • A Small group tour of less than 18 people for the mature traveller as holidays for a couple and holidays for solo travellers over 50.
  • Knowledgeable local expert guides and a great tour leader who has an interest in the theme of the tour.
  • Inclusive pricing, including all entrances, tipping and the majority of meals included. That means, no hidden extras with respect to cost. Transparent pricing of the single supplement for the single traveller.
  • A learning based escorted tour with a like minded fellow traveller.
  • Accommodation in 3 & 4 star hotels and self catering apartments.
  • A blend of group learning, touring activities and free time to explore a place further, whether on a discovery or walking holiday program.
  • No name badges or flags to follow when out and about.
  • Travel to places that extend your learning and curiosity, often where others will not follow.
  • Spending typically between 60 to 85% of the operating cost of the tour in the country visited, benefiting the local communities directly.

Do you have any other holidays that aren't with a group?

Odyssey welcome enquiries for private groups, at a minimum of 6 participants.

What is a small group tour?

Tours typically span between two to three weeks in duration. An Odyssey small group tour seeks to stay typically 2 to 3 nights in each location in good 3 or 4 star hotels. These are an escorted tour that have evolved to be a good blend of touring and seeing. As well as opportunities to spend time in key places to take a half or full day break from the group enabling you should you with to be a solo traveller for a few hours or explore with a travelling companion a particular place or take time out for a break, before we travel on to our next destination. For the solo traveller , Odyssey has a expansive range of holidays for solo travellers over 50 to choose from, though we do not offer a regular river cruise or a dedicated solos holiday or solo travel tours.

For the solo traveller there is a single supplement charged on all of Odyssey Travellers small group tour programs. The single supplement reflects the cost of single occupancy of a hotel room with a double bed in your own room (generally, no single bedded rooms are offered across Europe) or a single cabin on a cruise . There are no additional charges made any client booking holidays for solo travellers over 50 years of age, just the single supplement , we like to keep a level of transparency in the prices charged.

Which countries do small group tours go to?

Odyssey Traveller offers tours all over the world. We have a range of tours across Europe , The British Isles , Asia , Africa , The Middle East , and The Americas . We can take you to see the Northern Lights in the outermost regions of Norway. You can travel with us to the jungles of Madagascar to experience its magnificent landscape and wildlife or see the ruins of Machu Picchu in South America . Or take a journey through history with a tour with the theme of Britain’s canals and railways . If you enjoy a spot of cruising, join our Journey through Mongolia and Russia which includes a 10 night river cruise between Moscow and St. Petersburg, or our Egypt tour with an amazing Nile river cruise . If you prefer to stay closer to home, we have a great selection of tours in Australia to Western Australia, South Australia, Northern territory, Kata tjuta Outback Queensland, but not the great barrier reef or Ayers rock, Kangaroo Island but Tasmania as well as New Zealand , visiting both North island and the South Island including the east coast, Rotorua, Milford Sound, and Queenstown.

Essential Britain & Ireland

Liz Ryan is an excellent guide and knows her history of Britain very well. The bus was very comfortable and even had USB ports for charging. And the free bottles of water, as needed, were greatly appreciated. All hotels were very clean with very good provided breakfasts and only one could have used a bathroom upgrade. All beds we used appeared to be queen size. We really enjoyed the optional live Irish dancing and show and dinner at "Taylors Three Rock" in Dublin. Perhaps information on the VAT tax and the procedures to get that refunded should be provided to guests before and after arrival. The tour we were on is called a 10 day tour but is actually only 8 days on the bus. We were impressed and feel it was well worth the cost!

England, Scotland and Ireland end Dublin Tour

England, Scotland and Ireland end Dublin

All in all the tour was enjoyable. All 3 countries were beautiful but not enough overnight time was spent in key cities. We arrived to our hotels too late to go out to eat dinner in some locations. Then we were up and off to the next city or town the next morning. My phone kept dying so a charger and wifi on the bus would have been a benefit. Met some nice people and enjoyed time together. Our bus had several tour guides and people changes. Our pod on the bus lost its bubble of safety from covid. Came home ill. Overall, saw many places in 12 days. Eduardo was our favorite guide. He always made sure we knew the history before our next destination. The trip was well worth it in part due to him.

Britain and Ireland Panorama (16 Days) Tour

Britain and Ireland Panorama (16 Days)

Everything about the trip was good, including the weather, and Greg even influenced that, playing the Beatles "Here comes the sun" to start every morning. Full breakfast was good fuel for the day. Greg was enthusiastic, knowledgable, amusing, and patient with tardy guests. The coach drivers (Liam and Tommy) were superb. The porterage was a very nice touch.

Best of UK & Ireland Tour

Best of UK & Ireland

We enjoyed the tour very much!! Ailenn and ashley did an excellent job keeping the tour group of 51 people informed of times and events. Everyday was packed full of things to see and do. We fill maybe there was to much down time in some areas to walk around-could have been alittle shorter so we could get to our housing for the night alittle sooner. We were alittle disappointed that they showed no highlights of the city of london. We saw them on our own

Great Britain Tour

Great Britain

This was my first tour with expat explore. I found the tour itinerary and the guide and driver to be exemplary. Peter W is a fantastic tour guide, so knowledgeable, patient and organised. Minty is a world class driver - how he got us through those tiny winding roads in the Scottish highlands and small towns was nothing short of genius. I would recommend this tour to everyone who was looking to experience as much as possible in the UK. Now to some feedback. The hotel in York was terrible - rooms are run down and horrible smelling. The hotel in Liverpool is not big enough for 1 person, let alone 2 people and their luggage. I know it’s just a place to sleep, however having enough space to open suitcases is important. These issues are very minor and did not detract from my overall enjoyment of the tour, I would do it 10 times over and get more and more out of it each time. Thank you expat and Peter W and Minty for making my experience so wonderful.

Celtic Highlights Tour

Celtic Highlights

This was my first trip overseas & traveling alone & I would do it again in a heartbeat. My experience with Globus through the tour director, Peter Dundon, and the bus driver, Ein, will have me traveling again using Globus. From the time we entered the bus each day and exited each night he kept us informed on every city, Castle, ruins, myths, legends, history and more. He had a vast knowledge to share with us and also read poetry and sang local songs. Our bus driver was also very helpful as well as excellent behind the wheel through LOTS of narrow streets. Well done Globus.

What people love about UK And Great Britain Tours

Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.
I really enjoyed the trip
As the one year anniversary approaches, I wish I could do this trip again!

DAY 1 - Overnight flight to Great Britain.

The Trip Documents will provide guidance for airport check-in and for arrival in the British Isles. Relax on your transatlantic flight with the assurance that Image Tours has taken care of all the details.

DAY 2 - ENGLAND . . Arrival at London Airport - Oxford - Warwickshire.

Upon arrival, clear passport control and collect your luggage. Refer to the "Arrival Instructions" in the Trip Documents for directions on where and when to meet your tour manager. During the motor coach transfer to your hotel in Warwickshire, make a brief stop in Oxford where Henry II established the first university of Britain in 1167. Tonight, at your hotel, get acquainted with your fellow travelers during the "Welcome Dinner." (Dinner)

DAY 3 - ENGLAND . . Stow-on-the-Wold - Stratford-Upon-Avon - Warwickshire.

Views of the unspoiled countryside known as the Cotswolds clearly confirm you have arrived in England. Gentle hillsides, peaceful meadows, and charming villages with old stone buildings characterize this region. The first destination today is Stow-on-the-Wold, offering antique shops and an opportunity to take a souvenir photo with your hands in the village's authentic stocks. Then it's on to Stratford-Upon-Avon, where half-timbered houses with thatched roofs create a truly English setting. The introductory tour includes a picture stop in front of Anne Hathaway's Cottage and entrance to the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Enjoy some free time in Stratford-Upon-Avon or join the optional Warwick Castle excursion (see Optional Excursions) showcasing 1,000 years of history. Return to your Warwickshire hotel for dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 4 - ENGLAND . . York - County Durham.

Drive north via the Nottingham area. Around lunch time, arrive in the historic city of York and spend the afternoon exploring the sights that interest you. "The Shambles" is one of the most picturesque streets in Britain with unique shops, cafés and restaurants. York also boasts the most complete example of medieval city walls still standing in England today. Walk along them for exceptional views. Be sure to take a look inside York Minster Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in England. In the late afternoon, travel through North Yorkshire to County Durham for hotel check-in and dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 5 - ENGLAND . . Hadrian's Wall & SCOTLAND . . Jedburgh - Edinburgh.

Today in Dublin, you have the choice between two activities. First you may choose to join a local expert and familiarize yourself with the “Fair City” of Dublin during a coach tour highlighting the top sights! Visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral, O’Connell Street, Grafton Street and Phoenix Park, and see the city's trademark – magnificent rows of stately Georgian town homes. Your other option is to join a local guide on an intimate walking tour of Dublin’s historic center. Explore O’Connell Street and the Grand Central Post Office, site of the 1916 Uprising. Walk along the River Liffey and learn about the important role this river played in Dublin’s history. Explore Grafton Street before discovering the rich history of St. Stephen’s Green.

This afternoon in Cardiff you have the choice between two activities. First, you can choose to visit St Fagan's National Museum of History, an open-air museum chronicling the history, culture and the architecture of the Welsh people. Located on the edge of the city, this museum contains over 40 original buildings from different historical times, including workers' terraced cottages, farmhouses, shops, a chapel and old schoolhouse. In addition, there is a re-created Celtic village, and the 16th century manor houses and gardens to explore. Or, you can choose to have time at leisure to explore Cardiff's historical center further, including its shops and restaurants.

While in Waterford you have the choice between two activities. First, you can choose to visit Waterford Crystal’s impressive new factory and see first-hand the centuries-old tradition of Irish crystal making. Feel the heat of the furnace and marvel at the skills of the craftsmen on a guided tour of the facility. After the tour, perhaps you’ll indulge your passion for the world’s most famous crystal in the factory’s lavish retail store, which houses the largest collection of Waterford Crystal found anywhere in the world! Or, you can choose to join a local guide and explore 1,100 years of Waterford's history. From the Vikings to the Victorians, discover why Ireland’s oldest city is also one of its most important in terms of history, culture, and trade.

Hotel-Apex Grassmarket Hotel

Hotel-Aloft Dublin City

It dates back to the 1070s, when William the Conqueror built the original wooden structure, now replaced by the grand stone edifices. Explore one of Britain’s most visited historic buildings, its precincts, and the State Apartments, which house a delightful collection of Royal art treasures. Enjoy time for lunch in the quaint town of Windsor before heading back to London. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit the castle that houses so much British history and lore is not to be missed!

English Garden Tours

Last Updated on December 14, 2023

Haddon Hall, Derbyshire / English garden tours

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

Updated for 2022 – 2023

By Jim Ferri

English garden tours can be a delight. After all, gardening is such a popular pastime in Britain it’s practically been elevated to an art form. And many gardens are interesting to visit.

After all, the British have been mucking about in their gardens ever since Roman times. And they still take such delight in it that you find beautiful gardens all over the country. Ranging from little plots outside a kitchen door to vast parkland surrounding palatial manor houses, many are places of incredible beauty.

Kew Gardens, Brentford / photo: Laura Nolte English garden tours

Luckily, many of the grandest of these can be seen on English garden tours, when  gardens are open to the public, flaunting their floral finery for all who come.

Of course, you can find stately gardens all over the world. There are the gardens of the grand chateaux of France, botanic gardens scattered about North America, in Ireland and beautiful contemplative places Asia and elsewhere. But Britain there are so many, in such a relatively small space, that there’s nothing else quite like it anywhere.

Chelsea Flower Show English garden tours

Enjoying the Blooms Without Leaving London

London’s Chelsea Flower Show (scheduled for May 23-27, 2023) heralds the arrival of summer and beginning of the “Summer Season.” The show is held under the auspices of The Royal Horticultural Society and Britain’s leading horticulturists. They transform several acres of the grounds of the Chelsea Hospital into a vista of beautiful gardens. It’s a perennially popular event that allows one to go on an English garden tour without ever leaving the city.

If you’re a casual gardener visiting Britain, you may be sated by beautiful plantings you see in various places in or around London, since you don’t necessarily have to travel vast distances on a garden tour to see gorgeous  gardens in England . All over Britain you’ll find huge green spaces, some of them the most famous in the world. Many of them you can visit à la carte on day trips out of London and other cities.

The Maze at Chatsworth / photo: JR P English garden tours

But if you’re serious about things horticultural, you may want to make these green spaces the focus of your journey. So if you’re off to the British Isles, you may want to join an English garden tour. If that’s the case you may want to, if you’ll pardon the pun, do advance digging prior to your trip. A good place to start is Great British Gardens . It’s an online resource that lists gardens by geographic areas and types of plants. Great British Gardens is a commercial site that also offers to book you a nearby hotel. But it’s free to browse and has a wealth of good information.

Great Dixter, East Sussex English garden tours

Where to Find Great English Garden Tours

Anytime from April through autumn is a good time to plan an English garden tour. And you’ll find and plenty of places to visit.

Outside London you’ll find a bounty of blooms at the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew , Hampton Court Palace and the Savill Gardens in Windsor. Wisley Garden in Surrey has 200 acres of gardens, while in Great Dixter near Rye, the family home of late gardening writer Christopher Lloyd, there are extensive cottage gardens. The 100-acre garden in Sheffield Park in East Surrey dates from the 18 th century.

Sussex, Kent and Surrey are a treasure trove for the tourist- gardener. There you’ll discover beautiful formal gardens around many stately homes and estates. These gardens explode with color in spring and summer. Others, such as Polesden Lacey in Surry, famous for its walled rose garden, also have winter displays.

Trebah Gardens in Cornwall, rated one of the 80 finest gardens in the world , is a wonderful venue for an English garden tour and famed for its a sub-tropical jungle that has stunning coastal views. The other-worldly looking Eden Project in nearby Bodelva, has recreations of some of Earth’s most fertile environments inside two 50-meter biomes, including the world’s “largest rainforest in captivity.” During the summer months the Project hosts rock concerts in a summer music series.

Sheffield Park / photo: JR P

Gardens in Wales and Scotland

Further north in Wales is the largest greenhouse in the world, covering 560 acres of gardens containing 8,000 different plant varieties, in the National Botanic Garden of Wales . Still further north, way up in the Scottish Highlands, Inverewe Garden grows exotic species in its 50 acres of gardens. Amazingly, the Garden is home to over 2,500 species of colorful sub-tropical plants, their survival made possible by the warming currents of the Gulf Stream.

If you plan to take an organized English garden tour in Great Britain, many companies can be found through online searches. Just Google “English Garden Tours” for a tsunami of information. You may also want to contact any one of the several botanical gardens throughout the U.S. to see what they offer. The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens , for example, gives garden tours abroad.

Sissinghurst Castle in Kent / photo: JR P

Finally, many of these great gardens, as well as other popular sites throughout Britain, are under the stewardship of the National Trust. If you plan to visit three or more National Trust properties in England, a National Trust Touring Pass (£23 for one person, £41 for two), which provides admission to more than 300 houses and gardens England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The pass is date-stamped, and is good for either 7 or 14 days. Prices range from £37 for one person for 7 days, to £91 for an entire family for 14 days. It can be a very good buy.

Hi Nancy, September if a great time to visit London. You should get in touch with Visit Britain, which should be able to put you in touch with people who run garden tours. Go to https://www.visitbritain.com/us/en to be in touch with them here in the US. Jim

Destination

Bosnia and herzegovina, czech republic, liechtenstein, netherlands, north macedonia, switzerland, türkiye/turkey, united kingdom, bike & boat, multi-activity, vessels & boats, advanced search, british isles cycling tours, explore the british isles on a wonderful cycling holiday.

Great Britain, that large island in the North Sea, is surrounded by plenty of smaller isles and islets, all which offer unique opportunities to go for a splendid cycling holiday in the United Kingdom. There are four main islands that form the British Isles: the Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey.

Just the fact that you are on an island gives an instant holiday feeling. On top of that, there is the special journey to reach the island; which often includes a short ferry or boat ride to increase the sensation even more. Island life is usually slow-paced and local people seem more relaxed, hospitable and are often in for a chat. Add to that a constant sea breeze, fresh seafood and stunning ocean vistas and you’ve got yourself the perfect cycling holiday on the British Isles. Jersey is the biggest island of the Bailiwicks of Guernsey & Jersey, who have a separate economic and political life from Great Britain. The island has an ancient history: it was until several thousand years ago attached to mainland France with many Palaeolithic dolmans or burials from that period. It was known about in Roman times and later came under the control of the duke of Brittany during the Viking invasions. All in all, lots of historical and natural interest for the walker or cyclist. Known for scenic cliffs and beaches, small towns oozing old world charm, and coastal defences dating from the Palaeolithic period through to the Second World War, Guernsey has been a favourite holiday destination for active travellers. After a long and turbulent history, Guernsey, similarly to Jersey and other islands, is now a British crown dependency, albeit not part of the UK or of the European Union. According to legend, the Isle of Man was once ruled by Manannán, who would draw his misty cloak around the island to protect it from invaders. One of the principal folk theories about the origin of the name Mann is that it is named after Manannán. The ancient Romans knew of the island and called it Insula Manavi, it is uncertain though whether they conquered the island or not. However, the Manx Gaelic for the island is Ellan Vannin, which just means island of Man. The Isle of Wight island is easily reached from London on a 2-hour train ride plus a ferry or hovercraft trip. Queen Victoria, despite ruling a quarter of the Earth and being Empress of India, elected to spend her holidays on the Isle of Wight. Here she had a little holiday cottage build called Osborne House - her little pied-à-terre. She painted and sketched the island’s nature, rode horses and went for long walks and swimming. It’s worthwhile exploring for the history and seaside scenery.
