Visiting the Star Wars Sets of Southern Tunisia

"Star Wars" fans may be more familiar with the planet Tatooine than the country of  Tunisia : but in reality they are one and the same. Tatooine was the first planet to be introduced in the original movie, "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope," and of the 10 "Star Wars" movies made to date, four were partially filmed in southern Tunisia. Many of the sets are well preserved and open to visitors, who will recognize them as various iconic "Star Wars" locations including the Lars Homestead, where Luke Skywalker grew up; and Mos Espa, the spaceport where Anakin Skywalker lived before being discovered by Qui-Gon Jinn.

Matmata: The Lars Homestead

The Berber town of Matmata has several underground troglodyte dwellings, one of which featured in "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" as the Lars Homestead, where Luke was raised by his aunt and uncle. The same dwelling also appeared in the later film "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones." Today, the homestead has been turned into the Hotel Sidi Driss —an affordable option beloved by "Star Wars" fans. It has 20 basic rooms and a restaurant, where you can rub shoulders with other film fanatics and admire props taken directly from the movie sets.

Tataouine: Mos Espa Slave Quarters

The Tunisian town of Tataouine is not a "Star Wars" set in its own right, but it did inspire George Lucas' naming of the Skywalkers' home planet. It's also a great base for a full day of "Star Wars" sightseeing, since it's located within easy reach of Ksar Ouled Soltane and Ksar Hadada. A Ksar is a fortified Berber village, and both Ouled Soltane and Hadada were used to film scenes in the slave quarters of Mos Espa. Anakin Skywalker lived in these slave quarters with his mother, Shmi, in "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace."

Tozeur: Mos Espa, Jedi Duel & the Star Wars Canyon

The desert town of Tozeur is another great destination with plenty of "Star Wars" locations nearby. Sidi Bouhlel ravine appears in several scenes from the original "Star Wars" movie, including the abduction of R2D2 by the Jawas; the wreck of the Sandcrawler after an Imperial attack; and the Tusken Raider attack on Luke Skywalker. The vast salt pan of Chott el Djerid was the site of scenes showing the exterior of the Lars Homestead, and also featured as the final shot of "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith."

Fans will also recognize the area's dramatic desert ridges (known as the Yardangs) as the backdrop of the duel between Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul in Star Wars "Episode I: The Phantom Menace." To the west of the Yardangs lies the abandoned Mos Espa set, where the crews from Lucasfilm built much of the spaceport from scratch for "The Phantom Menace." The desert sands have encroached upon the set, giving it an eerie atmosphere of abandonment, but landmarks like Watto's shop, Sebulba's Café and the pod-racing arena where Anakin won his freedom are still clearly visible.

Djerba Island: Mos Eisley Cantina, Obi-Wan Kenobi's House

Located just off Tunisia's southern coast, Djerba Island is home to several Star Wars locations. Head to the coastal town of Ajim to see the buildings used for the exterior shots of the Mos Eisley Cantina, visited by Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan-Kenobi in "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope." Just outside the town lies an old mosque, which served in the same film as the house where Obi Wan-Kenobi spent his exile. Other Djerba Island buildings also appeared in scenes that were later deleted from the movie, namely as Anchorhead's Tosche Station.

Star Wars Tours

Although it is possible to hire a 4x4 vehicle and go in search of the locations listed above on your own, many of them are located deep in the desert and can be difficult to find. One of the best ways for "Star Wars" fans to experience Tunisia's iconic film locations is to join a dedicated tour like this one offered by Tunisia Tours . Lasting for seven days, the tour takes you to all the most important sets and includes a knowledgeable guide and driver. In between visiting "Star Wars" locations, you'll have the opportunity to experience other Tunisian sights including the historic medinas of Tunis and Kairouan.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 arrive in tunis / sousse.

Welcome to Tunisia! Arrive to Tunis/Carthage International Airport and you will be met by your driver to be transferred to the beautiful coastal town of Sousse . Dinner will be at the hotel.

Accommodation Options: – 3★, 4★, or 5★ Hotels

Day 2 Sousse / El Jem / Djerba

Morning departure for El Jem . The Roman Coliseum in this city is one of the best-preserved in the world. It was constructed between 230 AD and 238 AD and is believed to, at one time, have hosted between 30,000 to 45,000 spectators. Take time exploring this enormous structure and do not forget to go down to the rooms where gladiators await their upcoming battle. There is a museum in the town that hosts a plethora of mosaics.

Once you are ready, travel to Djerba for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3 Djerba Island Star Wars Film Locations

After breakfast, you will begin your Star Wars tour with morning visits to the Star Wars film locations on Djerba Island . Your first visits will be at the coastal town of Ajim. Here you will visit the exterior of the Cantina .  The film location of the Millennim Falcon blasting off from Mos Eisley is located in the area next to the Canitina. Located just outside the Ajim town is a historic mosque which was used for exterior shots of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s home where he lived during his exile.

Continue along the coastal road until you reach Sidi Jemour, a popular and beautiful beach on Djerba Island. You will see a building that is now used as a fishing shack and is set against the turquoise Mediterranean Sea.  This building was used as the Tosche Station for the Anchorhead . You might not recognize this film location as it was only used in the deleted exterior scenes with Luke and Biggs Darklighter and in the Special Edition for the scene showing Luke’s landspeeder heading towards Mos Eisley with Ben and the droids.

In the afternoon, take a tour of Djerba Island visiting the famous pottery town of Guellela, El Ghriba Synagogue (oldest Synagogue in North Africa), and Houmet Souk. Dinner will be at the hotel.

Day 4 Djerba / Medinine / Ksar Ouled Soltane / Ksar Hadada / Matmata

Today you will be a full day of site visits and travel so you will have an early start. Begin the day by traveling over the Roman Causeway connecting Djerba Island to the mainland. Your first stop will be Medenine, to begin the visits to the Slave Quarters Row, where Anakin and Shmi lived. Continue to Ksar Ouled Soltane , the best-preserved Ksar in southern Tunisia. You will then pass through the city of Tataouine; although the movies were not filmed in this city, its name inspired the desert planet in the Star Wars movies.

Continue to Ksar Hadada , another film location of the Slave Quarters Row. There is a scene inside Ksar Hadada where a balcony was used to film Shmi and Qui-Gon Jin talking about Anakin as he works on his Podracer. When you are ready, travel to Matmata for dinner and night.

Day 5 Matmata / Douz / Chott El Jerid / Sidi Bouhlel / Tozeur or Nefta

In the morning, take time at the Hotel Sidi Driss , which was used as the interior for Lars Homestead, the home of Luke Skywalker in 1976, A New Hope film . In 2002, the filmmakers returned to this set where the site was featured again in Attack of the Clones .

Continue across Chott El Jerid to Sidi Bouhlel and travel to ‘Star Wars Canyon’ where 9 scenes were filmed including when the Jawas were attacked and buried, Jawa Rock, and the scenes of the Tusken Raiders. After completing your visits, continue to Tozeur or Nefta for dinner and night.

Day 6 Tozeur / Nefta / Ong Jemel / Tozeur

After breakfast, visit the Dune Sea , the Krayt Dragon Ridge, and the location of the igloo of Lars Family Homestead exterior on the Chott El Jerid . The location was also used in Attack of the Clones and the final shot of Revenge of the Sith .

Return back to Nefta and travel to the Mos Espa film site beautifully located amongst the Sahara dunes.  Here you will find the Pod-racing arena, the Mos Espa streets, Watto’s shop, the market, and Sebulba’s Café. East of the set you will find the Yardangs , where the Jedi fight between Qui-Gonn and Darth Maul in Episode I was filmed. It was also the location of the Queen’s Royal Starship .

Close by is Ong Jemel ‘ the neck of the camel ’ where Darth Maul arrives on Tatooine and releases the Sith Probes. After finding Anakin and Qui-Gon, Darth Maul is seen flying over the cliffs. Return back to Tozeur for dinner and night.

Day 7 Tozeur / Kairouan / Hammamet

In the morning, you will travel to Hammamet where you will have a stop in the historic city of Kairouan . Here you will wander through the ancient medina. Continue to Hammamet for the night.

Accommodation Options: – 4★ or 5★ Hotels

Day 8 Hammamet / Departure from Tunis-Carthage International Airport

Depending on your departure flight schedule, you may enjoy a guided tour of the Tunis medina, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The famous Zitouna Mosque, spice market, and the gold souk (market) are sites you don’t want to miss. Spend time walking around and enjoy learning about the rich history in the Tunis medina before being transferred to the Tunis/Carthage International airport for your departure flight.

Having Mosaic help arrange the logistics of the trip made it an incredibly positive and much easier experience for us to travel around, without feeling like we were trapped on a “canned tour.”

He was our transporter and guide. Jamel is a very knowledgeable and experienced guide. No questions have been unanswered, no agreements have been unfulfilled. He was always on time, very proactive in addressing our needs, and, at the same time, was giving us enough time and room to consume the information and enjoy the scenery. I strongly recommend Jamel if you are looking for a guide for Tunisia multi-day tour. Read more Written November 12, 2023
  • X2157DPcarolinec 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing experience of Tunisia My sister-in-law, who is a travel agent, booked a four day tour of the major sites in and around Tunis with Jamel who was absolutely wonderful. First of all, he is an excellent driver. He maneuvered his way through the chaotic traffic with skill and patience making the daily road trips to the various sites pleasant and stress-free rides. Jamel is very knowledgeable and way he explained the history of the archaeological sites was fascinating and made them come alive. It was amazing to discover just how many changes the territories of modern day Tunisia have undergone over the millennia. Jamel is very flexible and adapted the tour according to the weather and our individual wishes within the possible and even organized a wine tasting afternoon at our request. He was also so kind as to organize a mechoui with grilled lamb meat and salad to accompany the wine. Of course this was extra but it was well worth it and perfectly rounded off the end of our 4-day tour. As well as speaking Arabic, he is very fluent in English and French which we conversed in and also mentioned that he is fluent in Italian. So to anyone looking to truly experience Tunisia, I highly recommend Jamel who is one of the best tour guides I have ever had during my travels. Thank you Jamel for making the trip to Tunisia such a memorable experience. Read more Written June 10, 2023
  • anncU3049NF 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Perfect guide to Tunisia Before booking Jamel, my husband and I considered several options for touring: self-directed/self-driving, pre-packaged private tour, or a customizable tour by Jamel. I am really glad we selected the third option. My reasons are: 1. Jamel drove, making the trip more relaxing for us 2. Jamel knew the best sites to see and for how long 3. Jamel adapted to us – particularly my need to stop the car and take pictures of seemingly common things like camels, sheep and voting ballots. 4. Jamel, and the people he introduced us to at various sites, shared stories of themselves, their culture, and their history. This last point is what makes Jamel the perfect tour guide. After touring with Jamel, I want to shout from the roof tops to all intrepid travelers, “Come, meet the amazing people of Tunisia. Their history is deep, their hearts are broad and the countryside expansive.” Read more Written May 19, 2023

  • Richard E 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Tunisian tour with Jamel The tour was excellent and Jamel was kind, knowledgeable and resourceful. He personalises the itinerary according to your interests and is very flexible. It was raining heavily on the first day, when we were meant to be in Tunis, so he completely reversed the order of the tour. He helped us change our accommodation bookings and made sure that we weren’t charged any late cancellation fees. He helped us to resolve any other problems we had along the way. Although the traffic in Tunisia is more than hectic, we felt safe at all times with Jamel. His commentary really enhanced the experience and we had some great discussions, between stops, about differences in Tunisian and Australian culture. The tour was even better than expected and I can’t recommend Jamel highly enough. Read more Written February 20, 2023

  • clintjam 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Not just a guide taking you sightseeing but a scholar taking you on an expedition! Jamel is a very professorial guide, articulate in English, and has the answer to most any question you may have about the many places we visit on the tour of Tunisia or about the country in general. As this was a private tour, my wife and I warmed up to Jamel since he was with us for a week. He was was extremely attentive to our needs and flexible in the itinerary so that he accommodated changes we made without much fuss. The car we used for the tour was roomy, clean and reliable. Ad as our tour included hotels, the hotels he booked were cozy, clean and adequate. Above all, he vast reservoir of knowledge about the country and his very didactic style of explaining the history of the Punic, the Romans and all the other peoples who left ruins all over Tunisia, made us feel like we were on a National Geographic expedition with a scholar. The only negative was in the first 2 days he seemed to drive a little too fast for our comfort level. Apparently because we had so much on our itinerary to cover in a short time. But after we told him that we would rather miss something on the itinerary than take the risk of speeding to accomplish it, he moderated his speed and we felt more comfortable. I would definitely recommend Jamel for any tour of Tunisia. Read more Written October 27, 2022

Active filters, tourism type, depart/return, starting price, film/series, star wars location | set, indiana jones location | set, discovery | photo stop, adventure element, frequently asked questions | outer rim experiences, what is the star wars & indiana jones connection to tunisia.

Tunisia, the gem of Star Wars tourism destinations, is distinguished as the country with the second most number of unique Star Wars film sites (12 total). Four Skywalker saga live-action films contain principal photography footage shot in Tunisia: A New Hope (1977), The Phantom Menace (1997), Attack of the Clones (2000), and Revenge of the Sith (2003). The Mandalorian live-action series incorporates third-party footage filmed in Tunisia for Chapter 5: “The Gunslinger” (2019). Tunisian architecture, landscape, and names/references are ubiquitous in Star Wars canon. Fictional Tatooine in many respects is a direct reflection of Tunisia. No other real-world destination offers the same level of organic immersion into the Star Wars universe.

Representing locations in 1930s Egypt and Greece, Lucasfilm shot extensive footage in central and southern Tunisia (5 film sites) to make Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Beyond studio content, Tunisia accounts for more collective screen time than any other country in the first Indiana Jones cinematic installment, leaving an indelible impact on the franchise.

Why should I book a day trip with Galaxy Tours?

We are the only travel company to specialize in Star Wars tourism in Tunisia. We maintain this refined focus—paired with expertise in Indiana Jones tourism in Tunisia—to be the best at what we do. Our professionalism and expertise are authenticated by our status as the only travel company approved by Lucasfilm to exhibit at Star Wars Celebration. Exact set, scene, and sequence locations at Lucasfilm film sites in Tunisia matched with production details, original discoveries (to include recce site research/identification), unique immersive activities, unrivaled behind-the-scenes insight, and in-depth historical context embody the Galaxy Tours difference.

Will I enjoy a day-trip experience if I am not a Star Wars or Indiana Jones fan?

Yes. Star Wars and Indiana Jones locations in Tunisia are innately visit-worthy due to their inherent value as essential Tunisian cultural/heritage landmarks.

Are Outer Rim Experiences designed for a certain traveler type?

Yes: everyone. Catered to tourists, business travelers, expats, and residents alike, our day trips in Tunisia are the perfect complement to cultural get-aways in Tunis; beach holidays in Bizerte, Hammamet, Sousse, or Monastir; island stays on Djerba; or desert escapes in Tozeur.

How many day trips are available?

Four. We offer unique day trips spanning the Tunisian regions associated with Lucasfilm production, including one ATV adventure option in Tozeur.

What is included in the Outer Rim Experience price?

Price includes a private half-day or full-day trip in Tunisia (length depends on the selected package), specialized guide, exclusive Galaxy Tours itinerary, and proprietary cinematic reference material. Depending on the selected package, the price might also include ground transportation and professional driver(s) with coordinated pick-up/drop-off, adventure elements (ATV activity, foothills hiking, and/or canyon hiking), special events, light refreshments, and/or complimentary bottled water.

What is not included in the price?

Price does not include arrangements/expenses required to travel to tour start points and/or beyond tour end points, non-itinerary travel/activities, food/lunch expenses, international/domestic airfare, lodging, medical expenses, additional product taxes (if applicable), personal travel insurance, passport fees, visa fees (if required), alcoholic beverages, personal activities, personal spending, tips (optional), or any other expenses.

Do the day trips schedule time for lunch?

Yes. All but one Outer Rim Experience incorporates a lunch break at a quality restaurant as part of the itinerary. Travelers are responsible to pay for their own lunch expenses.

What can I expect in terms of guides?

Specialized Tunisian guides personally recruited/trained by Galaxy Tours CEO (Davin Anderson) lead our Outer Rim Experience day trips. All guides are certified to conduct tours in Tunisia. Each guide is professional, caring, charismatic, and expert in what we do.

Which language options are available?

All tours are conducted in English as the standard. French and Arabic options are available per request for certain day trips (subject to availability). Please contact us for more information. Cinematic reference material provided in English.

Where can I learn more about the Star Wars locations on the different day-trip itineraries?

We spent over four years conducting meticulous research and field work to establish our website as the authoritative, one-stop resource on all Star Wars locations in Tunisia. Each location has its own dedicated page on our website under the Film Sites or Scouted Sites menu tabs.

Do any of the day trips focus on Indiana Jones tourism?

Yes. Our Kairouan package explores the ancient Kairouan medina featured extensively in Raiders of the Lost Ark as Indy’s Cairo with 17 total filming areas (streets, plazas, and properties) in the old city. This one-of-a-kind Indiana Jones immersive experience includes the iconic Cairo swordsman plaza, Marhala Bar location, and an exclusive sunset event on the rooftop used as Sallah’s terrace (optional add-on).

Do I get to drink blue milk on any of the tours?

Yes. Our Matmata package includes an unforgettable blue milk break in the subterranean Lars Homestead dining room set at Hotel Sidi Idriss. Sipping blue milk in the exact spot where Luke did the same is as immersive as it gets.

Do I get to ride podracers on any of the tours?

Our Tozeur ATV package is conducted entirely on ATV “podracers” as the mode of transportation to all Star Wars locations in the desert dunes and salt flat areas near Nefta in the Tozeur region. As a bonus, this one-of-a-kind ATV adventure allows travelers to race in the dune impression used to shoot “Boonta Eve Classic” starting grid footage for The Phantom Menace .

Is cosplay permitted during the tours?

Yes. Absolutely. The more cosplay, the better.

Can I book a day trip for a team-building event?

Yes. Our day trips can function as unique corporate/government team-building opportunities. Please contact us for additional information and special group rates.

Where do the different Outer Rim Experiences start and end?

Our Djerba, Matmata, and Tataouine packages start and end on Djerba island. Our Tozeur and Tozeur ATV packages start and end in Tozeur or Nefta. Our Kairouan package starts and ends in the Kairouan medina. Some exceptions can be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us to explore possible alternative options.

What can I expect in terms of ground transportation?

We partner with top-notch Tunisian transportation vendors for travel to/from itinerary locations during specified Outer Rim Experiences. Travelers ride in comfortable, air-conditioned five-passenger SUV or 10-passenger microbus vehicles with professional driver(s). Vehicle type depends on the size of the group. Our Kairouan and Tozeur ATV packages do not include nor require transportation vendor services.

Can I use an insured rental or personal vehicle?

Yes. Travelers may opt to use an insured rental or personal vehicle for our Djerba, Matmata, Tataouine, or Tozeur packages. This scenario reduces the overall cost of the day trip. In such cases, our guide will ride in your vehicle to lead the tour experience. Please contact us for booking details.

Are the day trips suitable for children?

Yes. All age groups are welcome with some restrictions. Travelers under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Some hiking activities might be too strenuous for young children, to include exploration in Maguer Gorge (Tozeur package). Specific to the Tozeur ATV package: valid driver’s license required to operate ATVs and riders must be at least 8 years old to participate.

Are the day trips suitable for persons with disabilities?

Yes, with exceptions. Although most day-trip destinations permit direct vehicle drop-off on flat terrain, some locations require movement on uneven/rocky/sandy surfaces. Not suitable for wheelchairs or scooters. Please contact us for case-by-case considerations.

When is the best time of year for an Outer Rim Experience?

There is never a bad time of year for our day trips. That said, the heat index in southern/central Tunisia during June, July, and August can rise well above 40°C/105°F. We adjust our day-trip schedules during these summer months to incorporate earlier start times to avoid high afternoon heat. Late fall, winter, and early spring provide the most pleasant outdoor temperatures for our day trips.

What type of clothing should I wear?

Seasonal, climate-appropriate clothing should be worn on our day trips. During warmer months, it is best to wear a breathable long-sleeved shirt, pants, head and neck covering, plus sunscreen. During colder months, we recommend a combination of interchangeable shirt/sweater/jacket layers and pants.

As a female, do I need to wear a headscarf or face covering?

No. Tunisians practice a very tolerant version of Islam. Although the traditional dress for females includes a headscarf, Tunisian society accepts all forms of fashion. Modern dress standards are embraced as a common part of daily life.

Is Galaxy Tours registered in Tunisia?

Yes. We are a registered tour operator in Tunisia approved by the Tunisian National Tourism Office (ONTT) to conduct tours.

Are group discounts available?

Yes. We offer a 10% small-group discount for bookings with at least four adults. The savings extend to a 20% large-group discount for bookings with ten or more adults. In addition, we offer a 12.5% family discount for children under age 12 traveling with at least one adult. Discounts for our Tozeur ATV package are structured differently. Instead of group and children discounts, we give 50% off the standard price for ATV passengers (non-drivers). All discounts are automatically calculated at check-out.

What are my payment options? Can I pay a deposit to book a day trip?

Online check-out offers travelers the option to either pay in full or submit a 35% deposit to secure a booking. If the down payment option is selected, the full balance is due no later than 3 days prior to the day trip start date, payable via secure email link.

Is there a minimum number of travelers required to secure a booking?

No. We accept parties of all sizes, to include solo travelers. Our business model obligates a single supplement charge for one-person bookings.

Are last-minute bookings possible?

Online bookings must be made at least 3 days in advance of the day trip start date. Please contact us directly to confirm options for last-minute bookings less than 3 days in advance.

Do I need a visa to vacation in Tunisia? Or is my tourist passport sufficient?

Foreign nationals from roughly 100 countries can enter Tunisia for a limited duration without obtaining a visa. The visa-exempt status depends on the nationality of the visitor and differs between 30 to 120 days.

Which vaccinations are recommended for travel in Tunisia?

The following vaccinations are recommended (not required): chickenpox (varicella), COVID-19, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, influenza, measles, meningitis, mumps and rubella (MMR), pneumonia, polio, rabies, shingles, Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), and typhoid. Yellow fever vaccination certificate not required. Contracting malaria in Tunisia is low risk.

Do I need to sign a tour agreement/liability waiver?

Yes. Following standard practice within the tourism industry, all travelers are required to sign a separate Outer Rim Experience agreement/liability waiver to participate in any booked day trip. The Tozeur ATV package requires its own ATV-specific waiver .

What happens in the event of bad weather or other unforeseeable circumstances?

Inclement weather, strikes, civil disturbances, or other unforeseeable circumstances might restrict access to certain itinerary locations, partially hinder specific day-trip activities, and/or cause delays. We reserve the right to make any itinerary adjustments to ensure the comfort and safety of all travelers. No discounts or refunds will be offered in such cases.

Is it safe to travel in Tunisia?

Yes. Traveling to all Star Wars and Indiana Jones locations in Tunisia is unquestionably safe. All areas visited on our tours fall well beyond official travel advisory specifications. Petty crime targeting tourists is rare. The Tunisian proclivity to embrace, accept, and protect international visitors is both genuine and ingratiating. International media outlets—especially since the cluster of mass-casualty attacks in Tunis and near Sousse in 2015—routinely paint Tunisia as a hotbed for radical Islamic extremism. This perception is fundamentally false. The overwhelming majority of Tunisians interpret terrorism to be in direct conflict with Tunisian ideals and values. Pivotal security developments since 2016 to thwart Islamist activity in Tunisia continue to drastically minimize the probability of future large-scale terrorist attacks inside the country. The current security challenge posed by organized Islamist groups based in Tunisia mirrors a low-impact insurgency combating Tunisian security forces rather than a protracted terrorist campaign. These militant groups, relatively small in number with no capacity to seize control of any populated territory, operate autonomously in northwestern Tunisia, primarily in isolated mountainous areas in the Kasserine and Kef governorates. In regard to ISIS-inspired/politically motivated “lone wolves,” the probability of a single-actor attack in Tunisia is no greater than the rate of such attacks in regionally adjacent European countries.

What is the cancellation policy?

All amounts paid will be refunded for cancellations made at least 7 days prior to tour start date. 50% of amounts paid will be refunded for cancellations made between 3 to 7 days prior to tour start date. No refunds will be offered after 3 days prior to tour start date. In the unlikely event of cancellation due to extreme weather, natural disaster, pandemic-related circumstances, or other emergency conditions in Tunisia, refunds on all amounts paid will be offered.

How do Outer Rim Experiences benefit local communities in Tunisia?

Ensuring that local Tunisian communities benefit from Star Wars and Indiana Jones tourism is foundational to our company. Our marketing efforts enhance Tunisia’s profile as the optimal off-the-beaten-path tourist destination. We bring clients to local hotels, restaurants, and transportation services. We train, develop, and generate work for local Tunisian guides. Partnering directly with local entities, we provide financial support, targeted research, and collaborative outreach to assist in the restoration/preservation of Star Wars sites in Tunisia as historical landmarks of worldwide cultural value.

Full description.

Once guests are collected from their designated meeting point (confirmed before the start of the tour), the Star Wars Half-Day Tour from Tozeur will begin. The first part of the tour will start with visiting the breathtaking Dune Sea , a vast stretch of desert situated at the outer edges of Tatooine . As we arrive at each location, there are ample opportunities for groups to take photos, so it’s advised to have a camera at the ready.

The next step of our journey commences with a visit to the Krayt Dragon Ridge. The Krayt Dragon is a common species of a dragon which would commonly be seen in the rocky canyons of Tatooine. Groups will visit Chott El Jerid , which is the location of the igloo of Lars Family Homestead exterior. Luke Skywalker was raised at the Lars Family location by Owen and Beru Lars until he turned nineteen. The final shot of Revenge of the Sith and Attack of the Clones both featured this location.

Once we finish taking in the fantastic Tunisian scenery guests will experience Sidi Bouhlel Canyon, which is often referred to as Star Wars Canyon . For Star Wars fans this filming location captured several scenes showcased in Star Wars: A New Hope . Star Wars Canyon is renowned for being the home of the desert planet of Tatooine and is recognisable as the place where Obi-Wan rescued Luke Skywalker as well as where R2-D2 is kidnapped. The Tusken Raider scenes and Jawa Rock was also filmed here.

Star Wars: Nefta / Mos Espa

After taking advantage of the fantastic photo opportunities of Sidi Bouhlel Canyon, we move onto the next tour location of the Mos Espa film site. The place is superbly located amongst the Sahara dunes. It is this area that viewers grew to recognise as the filming location of the pod-racing arena. While here guests can almost hear young Skywalker speeding past the finish line.

The Mos Espa streets, Watto’s shop, market, and Sebulba’s Café are located here. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore should you wish. Looking in an eastern direction of the film set is where guests will witness the Yardangs which became famous for an appearance in Star Wars: Episode I. The Yardangs is where the battle between Darth Maul and Qui-Gonn had viewers gazing at their screens when it aired in 1999. The Queen’s Royal Starship was also caught on camera here. Ong Jemel is very nearby and is the area where Darth Maul issues the Sith Probes after his arrival in Tatooine.

The Star Wars Half-Day Tour from Tozeur draws to a close at this point. Our tour groups are taken back to their original pickup location, or a more convenient drop-off point to suit the requirements of our guests.
