Neko Case (born September 8, 1970) is an American singer, songwriter and musician, known for her work with the Canadian band The New Pornographer, hailing from Tacoma, Washington, U.S.
After leaving home age 15, Case became the drummer in a number of America’s Northwest's punk bands including the Del Logs and the Propanes. In 1994 the musician moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to attend the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, whilst continuing to play drums. Having graduated in 1998, Case was forced with a lack of visa to return to the U.S. and contributed lyrics to The New Pornographers debut album “Mass Romantic” – which became a surprise success. Coupled with her work with The New Pornographers, Case has worked with other Canadian acts The Sadies and Carolyn Mark, and has become a prominent female figure in Canadian music.
Neko Case released her country-inspired debut album “The Virginian” in 1997. The album features both original material as well as covers of artists including Ernest Tubb, Loretta Lyn and Queen. The musician’s sophomore album “Furnace Room Lullaby” was issued on Bloodshot Records in 2000 and earned considerable acclaim for its original and dark compositions. Case has subsequently released the EP “Canadian Amp” in 2001, after relocating to Chicago, Illinois, U.S., followed by the 2002 full-length “Blacklisted”. The album earned even stronger reviews than its predecessor and subsequently landed the singer-songwriter an opening slot for Nick Cave.
In between recording and touring with The New Pornographers on an irregular basis, Case released the live album “The Tigers Have Spoken” in 2004, and the full-length “Fox Confessor Brings the Flood” in 2006. The latter proved to be Case’s most accessible album to date and peaked at No. 54 on the Billboard 200. After a live album recorded at Austin City Limits entitled “Live from Austin, TX” and contributions to the New Pornographers album “Challengers”, Case returned to the studio at her home in Vermont, and released the album “Middle Cyclone” in March 2009. The album was followed up by “The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You” in 2013, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album in 2014.
Live reviews
I have loved Neko's music for many years, and I consider her show at the Aladdin in 2014 in Portland one of my favorite concerts ever.
Unfortunately, this show at Revolution Hall was really weird and ended badly. I kept thinking something was wrong with the sound, because the band and Neko didn't sound right. She kept motioning for them to turn her vocals up. Also, although the show began with some joking between her and Kelly - the backup vocalist - pretty quickly it seemed like they were not having a good time. Few jokes and multiple problems, including Neko not remembering how several different songs started on her guitar, Neko calling out someone in the audience for using their phone (we, the crowd, were all with her on that one. She did ask for no phones.)There was also a drunk woman in front of me that yelled "Happy Birthday Dan!" in between every song, which was very annoying. Neko had mentioned the drummer's birthday, but it didn't need to be said repeatedly. And Kelly complained of being cold, and Neko said that they were cold the night before, but the venue didn't do anything about it.
So all in all, the whole show was off and the band looked and acted uncomfortable, harried and generally unhappy. About an hour in, Neko messed up in the middle of another song, then pointed to the balcony. She said something about someone using their phone to film her, that she fucked up the song because of this person, and then she stormed off stage. The band left, and that was that.
It sucked. $45 per ticket, which was double what I paid last year to see her, going to see one of my favorite artists, and it ended like that.
I want to give her the benefit of the doubt. I feel like there was a lot more going on that night than one asshole filming her with his phone. But I guess we will never know, because she has said nothing about it. I don't really know how to feel. Feels kind of like a close friend flipped out and won't talk about it, and I'm not sure if she's just a person that throws fits and ruins other people's nights, or if she has something she won't tell me about. But of course, we aren't friends. She just makes incredible music that I love intensely. And so here we are...

When I bought my tickets to Coachella this year, there were a lot of bands I had planned to see. I wasn’t even intending on catching the Neko Case set, but I am so glad that I did. She turned out to be one of the best live performances I have ever seen.
The scene for her to take the stage was perfect, the sun was setting, the crowd was warmed up (both literally and figuratively,) and the California mountians were looking over us. With the mood set, her full band took the stage, keyboards, back-up singers, all of it, and they started rocking. She was playing the guitar with passion and belting out the lyrics. Her energy was over the top but she hit all the notes. You could tell that the crowd was really getting into her excitement.
Although the crowd wasn’t packed, she was playing to dedicated fans. I was toward the back and as she played “Man” I could see people everywhere just dancing and having a good time. Up front people were screaming a long and some people were even crowd surfing. The set was short, but everyone seemed to be having a really good time and were really feeling the power in her vocal. A strong group of musicians lead by a strong women.
Ex-The New Pornographers member, Neko Case has gone on to achieve a celebrated solo career since her first release way back in 2007. Often described as one of the coolest women in indie, Neko oozes a self-assured laid back demeanour when taking to the stage and she has obvious confidence within her vocal abilities.
She is also very skilled with a guitar, as she takes to the helm to perform the twisted riffs of 'The Tornado Loves You'. Accompanied by a host of very talented musicians, they soon set about recreating Case's work, most of which is lifted from new album 'The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You' which the fans very much enjoy hearing. She does refer back to its predecessor 'Middle Cyclone' throughout the evening much to the delight of the crowds. She steers clear completely of tracks by The New Pornographers yet nobody seems to mind as after 20 or so tracks of A-grade indie the whole audience is well and truly satisfied with their experience.
I attended the Neko show with Ray in Indy on June 15. I went for Neko Case and I knew very little about Ray Lamontange but liked what I had heard. Honestly, the crowd sucked. People talked during Neko's entire performance. This was my 6th time seeing her since I discovered her in 2004. The sound was not loud enough. I couldn't hear what she was saying to the crowd in between songs. She only played for an hour. And then we had to wait a solid hour for him to start. I wanted to hear more of her. Ray was great live but he didn't play anything I knew. I believe Neko should have headlined she's amazing and deserves to be heard. Here to hoping more people discover her music and love and appreciate what she gives to us musically. Anyhow, not the greatest experience but at leAst Neko killed it.
To correct one poster here. Neko is still an active member of the New Pornographers. She appears on their current Whiteout Conditions record/CD and was on the first part of their 2017 tour.
She is amazingly versatile solo or in the context of a group like NP--out front or singing harmonies. (band mate Kathryn Calder, a fine performer in her own right takes over for Neko on leads when Ms Case is not touring with the band).
The Case Lang Veirs show in Brooklyn last year was one of the most memorable shows I have ever attended.
Hard to pigeonhole Neko--suffice it to say she is just a wonderful singer and song writer. It's all just music! She also plays a mean tambourine and other rhythm items! (she was a drummer early in her career).
Great show. Neko Case is a great performer and brings a refreshingly authenticity to her shows that appeals to new listeners and long-time fans alike. So thankful for the opportunity to hear her play at Prescott Park, and the set list was a great blend of selections across her body of work. Opening with "Hold on, Hold On" set a intriguing tone for the night, and the G-rated "The Tigers Have Spoken" (modified in deferencte to the multitude of children jigging in front of the stage) was great. Hoped to hear "Furnace Room Lullaby" but hearing "Ragtime" live was a lot of fun. THe band was tight, and the sound levels were perfect. A must see performer.
The performance from Neko Case on the day her new album, Hell-On came out was very energetic albeit short. I feel like she honestly shouldve gotten more time on stage even though she was the opening act. Her vast catalogue of music deserves more than just a 45 minute set. She played several new songs off her new album and ended with Hold On, Hold On from 2006's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. I highly recommend seeing her when she tours. Her voice is a force of nature.
This was my second time seeing Neko and once again, what a beautiful and powerful performer! This Case/Lang/Viers concert was everything I hoped it would be and more. When they played "Man", I lost my mind with happiness and absolutely LOVED seeing K.D. and Laura get so into it. It was perfect. These women are my favorite.
Saw Neko at the Oakdale, opened for Ray Lamontagne and wish she would have been the headliner, she was great.
Featured songs from Hell On, also mixed in a few of her classic tunes and was in a great mood, voice sounded amazing.
Crowd could have been a little more into it but their loss, Neko was outstanding.
Great show Friday night. Her voice is amazing. She is warm and funny -- the audience loved her. The set list was a mix of better known tracks and "deep cuts" as she joked. Even if you are not familiar with her material, you'll enjoy the show.
It was a pleasure to finally see her live.

Neko Case Kicks Off Tour With Bawdy, Ferocious Austin Gig
By Michael Hoinski
Michael Hoinski
“Welcome to the first night of our tour, which is fucking terrifying,” said alt-country siren Neko Case, the orange-flecked acoustic guitar in her hands a match for her fiery locks. She and her five bandmates, including a female backup singer with whom she traded potty-mouth banter, kicked off their 34-date U.S. tour last night at Stubb’s in Austin not with a song from their critically lauded new album, Middle Cyclone , but with “Maybe Sparrow” from 2006’s Fox Confessor Brings the Flood . It was likely a nod to opener Shearwater, a majestic local rock band fronted by part-time ornithologist Jonathan Meiburg, whom Case said her group had a “music crush” on.
But as soon as Case gave that love she took it away, with a ferocious rendition of “People Got a Lotta Nerve,” wherein she sang, “I’m a man man man, man man man eater/But still you’re surprised prised prised when I eat ya.” Talk about a case study in a Case song. The insatiable animal fetish. The long-distance vocal runs. The subtle outro trills. No wonder her prey was duped. (Read our recent Neko Case feature, Neko Case’s Animal Instincts .)
Case said she and the band had been rehearsing in Austin for a spell leading up to the show. “We’ve been eating fried food for days and feel ready to rock America,” she said, adding, “and Canada,” as if not to forget the north-of-the-border fans she’s accumulated from her days in the New Pornographers.
It was one of many pre-song admissions Case made throughout a set split fairly evenly between Cyclone and Fox Confessor , in favor of T Bone Burnett-meets- Something Wicked This Way Comes atmospherics, and yielding of an appreciation for the natural world. She said “The Pharaohs” was about her first love, a “Burt Reynolds unicorn” (yes, you read that correctly). She also said this was the first time she’d played “I’m an Animal” live. “I’m gonna fuck it up,” she said. Well, she didn’t. Not even close.

Hancher Auditorium is thrilled to host the opening ceremonies of Mission Creek Festival 2024 on Thursday, April 4! Mission Creek Festival returns to downtown Iowa City on Thursday, April 4, through Saturday, April 6, for a weekend of music, literature, and community events. The official lineup and early-bird passes are available now, with the full schedule and additional passes releasing in January.
For Mission Creek's opening day, Hancher will transform into a single-site festival venue and present a multidisciplinary program featuring a reading and conversation with MacArthur Genius Grant Fellow Hanif Abdurraqib , who last visited the festival in 2018. On tour for his new book, There’s Always This Year , he is set to appear in conversation with writer and professor Tisa Bryant from the University of Iowa’s Nonfiction Writing Program. Performer and arts curator Taja Cheek, aka L’Rain , plays after Abdurraqib in support of her celebrated new record, I Killed Your Dog . The evening closes with a set from Neko Case and her band. One of our generation’s most critically acclaimed songwriters, Case celebrates her career-spanning retrospective LP, Wild Creatures .
In its 19th year, Mission Creek continues to embrace independent voices in music and literature. Hancher is honored to welcome these revered, rising, and remarkable artists to our community and the University of Iowa.
Neko Case : A storyteller at heart, Neko Case transcends genres and captures the essence of the human experience in her lyrics. With a career spanning over twenty years, Case is most known for her collaboration with The New Pornographers and Case/Lang/Veirs in addition to releasing many critically acclaimed solo albums. From the hauntingly beautiful Fox Confessor Brings the Flood to the raw energy of Hell-On , Neko's sound is an adventure that refuses to be confined.
L'Rain : Multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, and curator L'Rain's sonic explorations interrogate how multiplicities of emotions and experience intersect with identity. Critically acclaimed by NPR, named album of the year in The Wire magazine, and #2 in Pitchfork's best albums of 2021, Fatigue propelled L'Rain towards a new audience while further cementing her place within experimental and art institutional spaces. Described by AllMusic, L'Rain makes "dreamy, genre-blurring music [...], reflecting on grief, change, joy, and resistance through a collage-like mixture of soul, psychedelia, gospel, musique concrète, and numerous other genres."
Hanif Abdurraqib : Poet, essayist, and cultural critic from Columbus, Ohio, Hanif Abdurraqub is described on Articulate with Jim Cotter as one "of a generation that is helping to redefine poetry." His first collection of essays, They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us , was released in winter 2017 by Two Dollar Radio and was named a book of the year by Buzzfeed , Esquire , NPR, Oprah Magazine , Paste , CBC, The Los Angeles Review, Pitchfork , and The Chicago Tribune , among others.
All passes for the Mission Creek Festival will be solely available from The Englert Box Office—both online and in person.
Full festival passes—which grant guaranteed access to the engagements at Hancher and festival events on April 4–6 in downtown Iowa City—are on sale now online and at The Englert’s box office.
Single-day Thursday passes—which only grant guaranteed access to these events at Hancher—will go on sale on February 2.
Note : All seating for the events at Hancher Auditorium will be general admission.
