Journey Begins Quotes

Standart top banner.

the day our journey began

Every journey begins with a single step.

Your journey begins with a choice to get up, step out, and live fully

The longest journey begins with a single step, not with a turn of the ignition key.

The only impossible journey is the one you never begin.

Realizing your goal, resolution, or transformation is a journey. Change, like any meaningful endeavor, proceeds sequentially through steps. The journey begins with the contemplation stage of specifying realistic goals, getting ready, or getting psyched. The planning stage is all about prepping. How exactly will I do this thing? At some point you will jump from preparing and planning to perspiring, the work of implementing the new, desired behavior. Getting there is wonderful, but we need to keep you there, which entails persevering through slips and, finally, persisting over time.

I'm the type of person that likes to dream big, and I've often found that every great journey begins with a dream.

According to the ancient Chinese proverb, A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a cash advance.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Watch your step.

Sometimes journeys begin long before their first step is taken

The Day We Let Our Convictions Define Our Life Rather Than Our Insecurities, Our True Journey Begins.

The longest journey begins with a single step.

The journey begins, though, with understanding what it means to be a christian. To say you believe in Jesus apart from conversion in your life completely misses the essence of what it means to follow him. Do not be deceived.

The longest journey begins with a single step, not with the turn of an ignition key. That’s the best thing about walking, the journey itself. It doesn’t much matter whether you get where you’re going or not. You’ll get there anyway. Every good hike brings you eventually back home. Right where you started.

Since the moment of self-consciousness comes to a permanent end - and a new journey begins- is such a decisive stroke or milestone in the contemplative life, I can only speculate why so little has been said of this breakthrough; in fact , I may never get over the silence on the part of writers who say nothing about this second movement.

The Best Poems about Beginnings and New Starts

By Dr Oliver Tearle (Loughborough University)

Poems often offer a sense of hope in dark times, and poets down the ages have written wisely and movingly about the need to make a fresh start. Below, we introduce some of our favourite poems about beginnings and new starts – taking in the very beginnings of the universe, the beginning of a new chapter in a life, and even a new life itself.

1. John Donne, ‘ The Good-Morrow ’.

And now good-morrow to our waking souls, Which watch not one another out of fear; For love, all love of other sights controls, And makes one little room an everywhere. Let sea-discoverers to new worlds have gone, Let maps to other, worlds on worlds have shown, Let us possess one world, each hath one, and is one …

Let’s begin in the late sixteenth century with this wonderful metaphysical love poem by Donne (1572-1631), who celebrates the feeling of a new beginning which love can bring: the sense of your life having truly begun when you meet the person you love.

The opening lines address this plainly: ‘I wonder, by my troth, what thou and I / Did, till we loved?’ Watch out, too, for the sly pun on a certain four-letter word in the third line’s reference to ‘country pleasures’.

2. Alfred, Lord Tennyson, ‘ Ring Out, Wild Bells ’.

Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true…

This is one of the last poems in Tennyson’s long masterpiece, In Memoriam (1850), his elegy for his friend Arthur Henry Hallam. In one sense, the whole poem is about Tennyson’s struggle to come to terms with the untimely death of his friend (whom Tennyson loved dearly) and to make a new start. How can he prepare to live a good life now that the world no longer has Hallam in it?

Tennyson calls on the church bells to ‘ring out the old, ring in the new’, and to rid the world of the bad things that have occurred and to usher in a newer, brighter world. See the link above to read all of this classic poem.

3. Christina Rossetti, ‘ A Birthday ’.

My heart is like a singing bird Whose nest is in a water’d shoot; My heart is like an apple-tree Whose boughs are bent with thickset fruit; My heart is like a rainbow shell That paddles in a halcyon sea; My heart is gladder than all these Because my love is come to me …

A birthday marks a beginning, of course: the very beginning of our lives. But this idea of a beginning can also be taken up more metaphorically, in an extended sense, to refer to a new chapter in our lives, and this is what this beautiful, uplifting poem from Christina Rossetti (1830-94) brilliantly conveys: ‘Because the birthday of my life / Is come, my love is come to me.’

4. Rainer Maria Rilke, ‘ In the Beginning ’.

‘In the beginning’ are, of course, the opening words of the Bible, and begin the account of God’s creation of the universe and everything in it. Here, Rilke considers what’s happened since: ‘Ever since those wondrous days of Creation / our Lord God sleeps …’ Did we do something to make God lose interest in our world?

5. Rupert Brooke, ‘ The Beginning ’.

This is an early Rupert Brooke poem, written in 1906 when the handsome young poet who would later write ‘ The Soldier ’ and ‘ The Old Vicarage, Grantchester ’ was still a teenager:

Some day I shall rise and leave my friends And seek you again through the world’s far ends, You whom I found so fair (Touch of your hands and smell of your hair!), My only god in the days that were …

6. T. S. Eliot, ‘ East Coker ’.

The second of Eliot’s Four Quartets , published in 1940 near the beginning of the Second World War, ‘East Coker’ begins, fittingly enough, with the words ‘In my beginning is my end.’

And indeed, the poem sees Eliot visiting the place where he ‘began’, genealogically speaking: the small Somerset village of East Coker was where his ancestors lived.

The poem meditates on origins and beginnings of various kinds, taking in the origins of English rural communities and the poet’s own origins through the generations and centuries.

7. Dylan Thomas, ‘ In the Beginning ’.

‘In the beginning’: these three words begin each of the four stanzas that make up this poem by Dylan Thomas, which consider the grand and cosmological (the ‘star’), the earthly power of the elements (‘fire’), the message of God (‘the word’, reminding us of the beginning of another book of the Bible, the Gospel of St John: ‘In the beginning was the Word’), and human brain-power.

8. Sylvia Plath, ‘ Morning Song ’.

In this poem we have Plath’s speaker (based on Plath, herself a mother to a small child when she penned this poem) stumbling out of bed ‘cow-heavy and floral’ in her Victorian nightgown to attend to her new-born child. A number of beginnings – the start of a new day, the birth of a new life – are present in this poem which offers a vision of the child as a ‘new statue’.

9. Geoffrey Hill, ‘ Genesis ’.

Here’s another take on ‘in the beginning’: although Hill doesn’t use these biblical words, this poem – which, fittingly enough, opens his first collection of poems, For the Unfallen (1959) – muses upon God during the six days of Creation. Another ‘beginning poem’, on an epic scale.

10. Don Paterson, ‘ Rain ’.

This poem earns its place on this list of poems about beginnings and new starts because, as well as being beautifully lyrical, it is about films, and especially the beginnings of films – films that ‘start with rain’, as the poem’s own beginning, its opening line, has it.

For Paterson, even the most flawed films are saved if they have an arresting and atmospheric opening shot of rain to set the scene and evoke a mood; but might we see this clever, keenly felt poem as about more than just the beginnings of films?

“Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.” ~Carl Bard

Birthdays. They’re supposed to be a joyous celebration, right?

That one special day each year when we throw a party and reflect on the day our amazing journey began.

The starting point.

I’ve had quite a colorful journey and certainly enjoyed many wonderful birthdays in my life.

Turning 50 this past year wasn’t one of them. Here’s why.

When we’re little every birthday marks a major accomplishment. We learn to walk. Then we learn to talk. Then we go to school and learn our ABCs.

Everything is brand new.

When we graduate high school they tell us we have our whole lives in front of us. Whether we’re off to college, exploring the world, or entering the work force, we begin a whole new chapter. Independence.

A starting point.

You can just picture that open highway stretched out to infinity before you, beckoning to a future somewhere out on that horizon that calls you to adventure . All that you will become lies out there.

In my twenties, I was a freewheeling single young man touring the world with rock stars. How bad can that be, right?

Turning 30 was awesome too! I was living in sunny Southern California, playing music, and making records in recording studios. Life was good.

Even 40 was great. I had moved back to New York to play in my own band and got married. Our life together had just begun. Then came children. I became Dad.

You’re supposed to have accomplished your greatest life’s work by now, right? Achieved all your major goals. Changed the world.

But what if you’re still working on that? What if you’re just now starting to figure out what you’re really supposed to be doing with your life?

You can say many things about turning 50, but one thing you can’t say with a straight face is that you still have your whole life in front of you.

At this point in the journey, life has shown you many of its cards. Not all, mind you, but you’ve got a pretty good grasp on how the world turns. If there are still any surprises, they have mostly to do with learning to change the way you see things.

But something else happened that was very difficult to escape. Much as I hated to admit it, I found that I was looking around and comparing myself to my peers.

This person has kids entering college and I’m looking at two young children and the reality that I’ll be close to 70 by the time the youngest is out of school.

That one is retired at 50 and buying their second Ferrari while retirement doesn’t seem to be in the cards any time soon for me.

When you view life this way, there’s always going to be someone who you feel is ahead of you by your own estimate. And you’ll never catch up to them. So that leaves you feeling behind in some imaginary race that can’t be won.

And when the game is comparing yourself to others , you will never have enough. Ever.

Unknowingly, you build this imaginary scale to see how you measure up against your peers. Let’s call it the Success/Happiness curve. Yet, no matter where you believe you fall on that curve, the moment you mark your place is to engage in a losing battle.

You believe that if you can just obtain that (figure of money in the bank, job title, certain car) that you will have arrived at your destination and will find happiness there.

But you won’t. Because it’s not out there.

Not in any material things you can obtain. Whatever it is will begin to lose its luster the moment you acquire it. Then you’ll have to look for something new to replace it and give you another fix. And the cycle never ends.

So how do you break out of this destructive cycle?

Well first, I needed to learn how to let go of a lot of my preconceived notions about where I thought I would be by the time I reached 50.

Ultimately, I found the answer in meditation.

Through meditation you learn how to become present .

Most of us never learn to appreciate where we are at this very moment because we’re so focused on what happened (or didn’t happen) in a past that no longer exists and worried about a future that hasn’t happened yet.

Meditation taught me that to compare ourselves to others is the root of human suffering, or samsara. Because it creates a separation between ourselves and someone else. A duality. A them and an us.

Armed with this new perspective, the next thing I did was to review my life and my experiences to figure out what was working and what was not. This brought me face to face with a rather harsh reality.

As much as I liken myself to be a caring person, I realized that I’d spent most of my career focused on my own self-interests.

Sure I spent a lot of time making music, which is something very personal that you put out into the universe in the hopes that you will connect with an audience and make them feel something.

But it turns out the giving was conditional.

It was like, “Enjoy this music and help support my dream. Please vote for me in this contest and buy that CD and help me or my band out.” The focus was all wrong.

And that’s when I realized what had been gnawing away at me all these years. It was a yearning to connect with an audience in a meaningful way that focuses on helping them . On seeing the world through their eyes.

And so at age 50, I am only now seeing the light.

Only after allowing the hidden writer within to finally emerge did I realize that I have been telling stories my whole life.

With that came the realization that each of us has a unique story we’re supposed to tell. That’s why we’re here. And I’m supposed to help people to tell theirs.

The epiphany was that as a music producer and a songwriter, I had been doing this already for many years helping artists to realize their vision.

Suddenly everything felt different. Like I had steered the boat back on course. Like a new chapter.

Suddenly that really successful person I follow who I want to emulate, the one who seems so far ahead in their journey, finally, it all gets put into perspective.

We think they just arrived where they are today.

We never got to see all the years they spent toiling away in obscurity. Experimenting, missing the mark, failing. Trying to figure out the very things we’re looking to figure out now.

Until they honed their craft to excellence and were finally rewarded by the world for their efforts.

We never stop and give ourselves a break for simply being on the path. It may be a path of discovery. It may be a path toward a specific destination. Or it may be a path away from our old ways.

But you’re walking the path. Celebrate that.

The law says that if you take steps in the direction of your destination every day and keep walking, no matter how slow or how far you must travel, you must one day arrive there.

In Tibet they have a tradition. After a long and arduous journey, no matter how difficult, they seek a high vantage point and look back to see just how far they have come.

Age is irrelevant. Wherever you are in your journey is a starting point. Whoever or whatever it is you’re chasing, slow down.

Realize there is no race.

Whether you’re 20 or 50 or 80, if you never stop seeking then you’ll never cease to be amazed by what you might find.

And if every point is a starting point then every day can be your birthday!

How will you celebrate today?

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email [email protected] .

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers), both for Windows and for MAC users.

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs, there may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to [email protected] .

The Journey

by Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew what you had to do, and began, though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice – though the whole house began to tremble and you felt the old tug at your ankles. “Mend my life!” each voice cried. But you didn’t stop. You knew what you had to do, though the wind pried with its stiff fingers at the very foundations, though their melancholy was terrible. It was already late enough, and a wild night, and the road full of fallen branches and stones. But little by little, as you left their voices behind, the stars began to burn through the sheets of clouds, and there was a new voice which you slowly recognized as your own, that kept you company as you strode deeper and deeper into the world, determined to do the only thing you could do – determined to save the only life you could save.

I have read this poem many, many times. It is a true comfort. My family background has a similarity to hers, and I often feel as though she wrote this poem directly to me. I’m sure others have the same experience.

Thank you for your daily posts. It’s especially pleasurable when you bring me an author whose work I’ve not seen before.

I love the similarity between Oliver’s and Whyte’s separate poems of the same name.

It’s a special treat to hear David’s voice read her work.

I appreciate your comments and perspective this year, Brian, thank you.

oh Christy… thank you so much for the joy of these past two years? really? seems like 2 minutes, 2 very pleasurable and wonderful minutes

and my WOTY post….you might see a very familiar poem in it, and that just proves what a few of us have been saying, “great minds…”..LOL

I can’t wait.

Two years have passed very quickly. Funny, I wondered at first if I could even do something like this…a post a day for a year. Even with other words not my own. The commitment scared the bejesus out of me. Which was part of why I did it. Now the letting go of a project I’ve grown to love like air, is just as uncomfortable. Which is also why I’m letting go. But only for a short while. Open. Grasp. Open. Grasp. Open.

I can’t remember how I found you and your blog, but your words have kept me afloat these past eighteen months. Thank you, Christy. Happy New Year. May the days to come bring you wonderful joy.

Hannah, hello! I wish you another peaceful year of healing and comfort and maybe even some happiness too.

Oddly enough, I do remember! We each found each other separately, right around the same time. … I found you from my personal writing account at Running on Sober (as Christy Anna) when WP freshly pressed your “books on grief” post.

And right around then, you found this site (and me as Christina’s Words) thanks to Neruda’s love sonnets (if I die, survive me with such force…). My stats jumped like crazy that day, so I looked into why out of curiosity…

When I realized the crazy coincidence I just had to shake my head in marvel. I don’t think I ever told you that, but know that your own work has saved me too, continents away.

After a brief practice in letting go, I’ll be back. 🙂 stay tuned for some reader favorites while I’m away. Maybe I’ll even re-run those Neruda sonnets for you.

Love, Christy

I can’t believe I just discovered this wonderful site on this the last day! I will be going back to the beginning and starting at the top:)

Welcome! Glad you found the site. We’ll be back soon, but there should be plenty of good material to keep you reading for a while. 🙂

I borrowed your poem, Christy. Thank you so much for sharing it. ❤

The day the historic journey to America began

It is one of the most well known dates in history - on 16 September 1620, a group of men, women and children departed Plymouth aboard the Mayflower for a new life in America.

But for many of its influential passengers the historic voyage actually began several weeks before - on July 22, 1620, from a port in Holland.

In a moving ceremony on that day, many of the Pilgrims boarded a ship known as the Speedwell in Delfshaven harbour, meeting up with the Mayflower in Southampton. Had the Speedwell been seaworthy, both ships would have attempted the Atlantic crossing and the Pilgrims would probably never have set foot in Plymouth.

This part of the Mayflower story begins roughly previous 12 years before that date, in an eventful and often daring journey before they even left English shores.

Escaping England

A large number of the people who boarded the Mayflower were known as Separatists from towns and villages in an area of Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England.

They had broken away from Henry VIII’s new Church of England, becoming known as Separatists - but they faced prosecution for not following the King's church.

A Separatist congregation in Gainsborough , led by preacher John Smyth, decided to leave England for Holland in pursuit of religious freedom. They first attempted to escape the country in 1607 from Boston in Lincolnshire but the captain of the ship they had charted to smuggle them out of the country betrayed them and they were arrested.

Some of them were tried and held at Boston Guildhall for a month but they attempted the escape again the following year - this time successfully.

They fled from the port of Immingham in England, sailing to Holland where they settled in the city of Leiden.

Settling in Holland

The Pieterskerk in Leiden

The Pieterskerk in Leiden

Leiden , known for being a liberal city of free thinkers, was home to the Separatists for 12 years.

They set about creating new lives for themselves, bought land near the Pieterskerk church and built houses that became known as the Engelse poort - which means English Alley.

John Robinson , one of the founders of the Separatist movement in England, became ‘pastor to the Pilgrims’ during his time in Leiden. He was one of the leaders in planning the journey to America on the Mayflower.

He was to accompany a second wave of Pilgrims to America, but he never made it to the New World, dying before the journey. He was buried at St Pieterskirk Church in Leiden where a plaque is situated.

Also remembered in Leiden is one of John Robinson’s assistants and elders, William Brewster, who had come from England during the 1608 escape. He had lived and worked in an area of Leiden near Pieterskirk before he became one of the Pilgrim leaders.

He was a passenger on the Mayflower and settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The people of Leiden commemorated him by naming the street where he lived after him - William Brewstersteeg (Alley). Brewster’s house has nearly disappeared through development but the blank end wall can still be identified by the contrast of its bricks with those added later.

During the 12 years they were in Leiden, the Separatists found life hard. They earned little money and were not used to the urban location - having come from rural English villages. Parents started worrying that their children were being heavily influenced by the Dutch and would eventually forget their English roots.

They were also worried a war between Holland and Spain was imminent and that this would mean danger for the freedom they had fled for.

Getting aboard

They decided to move on again, so were in touch with their Separatist counterparts back in England to forge a plan to all travel together to Virginia, America and start a new community there, where they could live and worship as they wanted. To help fund the expensive trip, they made an agreement with the Virginia Company in London - created to establish colonies on the coast of North America which needed people to settle in them and send back goods for trade.

It was another Separatist John Carver who had a key role in planning the journey. He and fellow Pilgrim Robert Cushman were successful in negotiating with the Virginia Company for land in America where they could legally land and settle. William Brewster also knew a prominent member of the company to negotiate with too.

John Carver also won the key financial backing that was to pay for the trans-Atlantic voyage. He approached businessman Thomas Weston in London and the Merchant Adventurers in 1620 and convinced them that if they funded the journey, they would see a return on their investment. Thomas Weston agreed and hired the Mayflower which sailed from London to Southampton to meet the Speedwell, the ship which brought the Pilgrims from Leiden.

Pilgrim Fathers Church

The Pilgrim Fathers Church

The Separatists in Holland had sold their personal belongings to buy the Speedwell. After one last joint meal and service in the house of Rev John Robinson, 16 men, 11 women and 19 children made the journey from Leiden to Delfshaven near Rotterdam to set sail to Southampton on July 22, 1620.

They travelled on foot, on horseback and by carriage carrying their possessions, ready to board the Speedwell ship, meet the Mayflower, and sail onto a new life in America.

The night before the Pilgrims departed was spent praying in front of the church, now known as the Pilgrim Fathers Church. Today there is a stained glass window depicting the historic moment the Pilgrims set off, and a bronze plaque of the Boston Congregational Club from 1906 praising the hospitality offered by the church to the pioneers.

The following morning residents of Delfshaven and friends of the Pilgrims gathered to see them leave. John Robinson led prayers and after an emotional goodbye, the Speedwell set a course along the River Maas out to the North Sea and en route to Southampton.    A few days later the Speedwell arrived in Southampton and met up with the Mayflower which had sailed from Rotherhithe in London carrying the other Separatists from England. The plan was to stock up in Southampton and sail to America together.   The town was a thriving seaport so as well as offering all the commercial facilities needed to equip the long sea voyage, it also had established trading links with Virginia and Newfoundland. Living there was a group of seamen who had experience of the Atlantic crossing which proved helpful.   The Speedwell had been leaking during her journey from Holland, so was repaired in Southampton’s extensive ship building and repair facilities near West Quay.    Southampton proved the right choice, not least for its offering of all the supplies required for the journey and to establish a permanent community in America. The Speedwell and Mayflower were anchored just off West Quay, and the Pilgrims spent all day shopping for supplies, before sleeping on the ships at night.    And they were certainly in the right place - of the 153 merchants in the town in 1620, 118 were involved in the wool trade, but the remainder would have been able to help the Pilgrims with all the other items they would have needed to become self-sufficient.    A Hampshire man called Stephen Hopkins joined the Mayflower in Southampton, and is known as the only passenger to have had any experience of the New World, having been shipwrecked in Bermuda in 1609.

Leaving English shores

After a hectic few days of repairs and preparations, both the Mayflower and Speedwell left Southampton on August 15, 1620. But the Speedwell took on water again - thought to be either because she carried too much sail, straining her timbers, or the result of sabotage by the reluctant crew.    Both ships were diverted to Dartmouth, and over the course of a week the Speedwell was repaired. They set sail out into the English Channel towards the North Atlantic, but 300 miles off Land’s End the Speedwell leaked again and it’s decided they cannot risk continuing.    They turned around and headed for Plymouth, having already spent up to six weeks at sea since originally departing London and Leiden. The Speedwell was finally declared unfit to sail, and after some Pilgrims dropped out and stayed in Plymouth, the remainder boarded the Mayflower for the voyage.    On September 16, 1620, the Mayflower with 102 passengers and up to 30 crew onboard, left the Mayflower Steps on Plymouth’s Barbican. This was the last time the Pilgrims were on English soil before heading to the New World and a new life.

The Path to Personal Growth

Growth is about overcoming our tendency to respond quickly or negatively..

Posted June 13, 2021 | Reviewed by Jessica Schrader

  • Steps to personal growth include learning how to respond better to situations and finding those we can learn from on our journey.
  • Reframing our mindset to be more solution-focused than reactive can ultimately help make our lives happier.
  • It is important to find a teacher whose teachings and philosophy resonate with you, and to apply their principles to your own life.

Many people are focused on achieving fleeting things like wealth, success, or fame. While they may bring about temporary happiness , the feeling is often fleeting. I believe that out of all of the things we can work towards, pursuing personal growth is the best choice to achieve lifelong happiness and contentment. Today, we’ll learn why.

We don’t have much control over things in the external world. For example, we didn’t choose the place we were born, our family, or our natural talents. The one thing we do have control over is how we respond to the world, more specifically to adversity. Personal growth is about overcoming our natural tendency to respond quickly or negatively to situations. When we’re able to control our reactions, or our internal selves, a world of possibilities opens up.

In today’s post, I want to discuss the two ways we can achieve personal growth and how we can better respond to the world around us. This will help us find inner peace no matter what’s happening in our external world. This may sound hard for some of us, and it is. But when we change how we see the world and how we respond to the world, there is an unlimited amount of potential for achieving happiness and peace.

The first aspect of personal growth is learning how to respond better to situations that we have historically struggled with. Let’s use self-confidence as an example. When we’re having a particularly low day, we may look in the mirror and think, “I don’t like the way I look.” To combat these thoughts, we can develop skills to accept our appearance and even begin to like the way we look. This acceptance stems from the realization that there are some things that are out of our control. Once we internalize this fact, we can begin to accept what is, and eventually love what is.

The second key ingredient to personal growth is finding a teacher or teachers that we can learn from on our journey. The reason this is a key ingredient is that it’s helpful to have an expert in the subject who can help us understand these principles more deeply.

Let’s dive deeper into both of these concepts.

The first aspect of personal growth is focused on re-framing our struggles. What I mean by this is, the next time we face a problem, the best way to overcome it is to see it differently. For example, the next time we wake up anxious , are upset at a friend, or have an interaction that causes us to stress , we can choose to see these as opportunities to make our lives better.

Something I have repeated throughout my podcast is that there is a solution to every single problem we face. One of life’s purposes is to find these solutions. We have the power to adjust our typical responses to situations that bring on intense emotions, whether that is shame , anger , depression , etc. We now can begin to say, “I’m struggling with this. There must be something that I’m doing that is causing me to struggle, because there are other people who have also faced this problem and they’re doing well. This means there must be a solution.” Instead of criticizing ourselves, or hating our lives, we can reframe our mindset to be more solution-focused than reactive. This will guide us towards finding a way to solve our problems and ultimately make our lives happier.

Let me use an example to explore this point. Studies have shown that about 80% of people are unhappy at work. For the purpose of this example, let’s say we’re in that 80%. In order to change our circumstances, or find a solution, we must ask ourselves what can we do to make our situation better? We can perhaps leave our job, but that would have consequences since we’re responsible for supporting our family. Maybe we can look into other career paths, but seeking out more education may take a long time. Or we can say, maybe I can reduce my living expenses so I don’t need to keep up with the lifestyle I’ve created for myself. With these reduced expenses, I can now work a little less or find a job that will be more fulfilling. Happiness is about enjoying our day all day long, so we want to make sure that our job makes us feel happy and fulfilled.

There are so many ways to tackle this problem. One solution that many of my clients have reached over the years is to work less. A lot of people have flexibility in their work already that they may not be taking advantage of. For example, one of my clients gets three weeks of vacation a year but is tempted to skip out on the vacation because they get paid out on those days at the end of the year. In response, I asked them, is it worth not taking your vacation to have a little more money? When they examined the option more closely they decided that no, it wasn’t worth giving up the opportunity to recharge and decompress. My goal is to help folks reframe what life is about. I believe that it’s about enjoying the journey and for most people who work regularly, taking a vacation is necessary to maintain our happiness.

the day our journey began

Remember that this is just an example. Your story and your struggles may look completely different. The overarching point here is that we often have some control over situations that may seem out of our control. And when we take the opportunity to make some changes, we will find that happiness is within our reach. We can look at life’s challenges as an opportunity for personal growth, rather than an inconvenience or hassle. The best part is, when these challenges re-emerge later, we’ll know how to handle them.

The second aspect of personal growth is to find a teacher whose teachings and philosophy resonate with you. When you do find the right teacher, it’s important to apply their principles to your own life. This step may seem less important but it is just as important as step number one. Our parents or caretakers were the people who taught us how to respond to the world and if we want to change that, we need someone who is better aligned to our current belief system than the one we had when we were younger. We also don't necessarily have to access these teachings in person. We can listen to them on audiobooks, watch them on youtube, or read about their beliefs in a book. And if you reach a point where their teachings are no longer serving you, there are always other people out there who can guide you through your path to self-discovery

Working on ourselves is no easy task. It involves unlearning and practicing different responses to problems, over and over again. But we must remember that we are capable of real change, and these changes can help us live beautiful lives. When we look at problems in a different light and follow a teacher with whom we resonate, we’ll grow exponentially.

Starting from Orlando, woman makes history by 'hitchhiking' her way across U.S. aboard antique airplanes

ORLANDO, Fla. — It was the trip of a lifetime, one in which an adventure-seeking woman made history.

It's fitting that Martha Esch’s “barnstorming” journey across 48 contiguous states, "hitchhiking" aboard antique airplanes in 1988, became the subject of an Orange County Regional History Center breakfast this Women’s History Month.

What You Need To Know

martha esch grew up captivated by planes and flying  a book spurred the idea to "hitchhike" across the united states via antique aircraft  esch left for her 183-day journey from orlando executive airport she enthralled a crowd at the orange county regional history center this month with tales of her "barnstorming".

“Enthused, nervous and excited. This is a banner day for me,” said Esch, just prior to her presentation. “I’m nervous, but it’s an excited nervous — a fun nervousness.”

Before long, the aviator donned her goggles and leather, fitted hat to take center stage, with the backdrop of black and white photos and maps from her fantastic feat.

“I’ve got goose bumps, even on the bottom of my feet,” she said, laughing.

Esch grew up in the shadow of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, keenly watching planes flying overhead and lights dotting runways. She was fascinated by flight, and by the time she turned 14 years old, marveling at her first flight aboard an early 1900s-era Ford Trimotor, nicknamed the “Tin Goose.”

“I can’t stop looking up when I hear airplanes flying,” Esch said.

Yet, Esch never imagined her captivation by planes, and the romance of riding amid “the wind and wires,” she described, would one day land her in the history books.

Esch began journey by crafting meticulous plan

In college, Esch studied aviation at Kent State in Ohio, wanting to be a pilot at a time when “women didn’t make a living as pilots,” she explained.

But in her senior year of school, she stumbled upon a book titled, “Vagabonding in America,” and checked it out from her local library.

“It had one sentence, ‘You can also hitchhike via airplanes.’ And a lightbulb went off in my head, and I thought, ‘Yeah, why not?’” She recalled.

So, in 1988, that is exactly what Esch did, meticulously charting for months her course aboard vintage “aeroplanes,” as she affectionately referred to them. She worked out of a recreational vehicle parked at Orlando Country Airport, now renamed Orlando Apopka Airport.

She drew up adventure guidelines or parameters. For instance, the airplanes upon which she would catch rides would need to be vintage — at least 25 years old.

And Esch also penned letters to all the chapter presidents of the Antique Airplane Association, sharing with them her plans, dreams — and kindly requesting a ride.

Her send-off from Orlando Executive Airport and the hangar of the famed Rosie O’Grady’s Flying Circus was nothing short of spectacular. Cameras, reporters and local aviation legend Joe Kittinger even showed up, Esch said.

Soon, the 29-year-old was off on a 183-day, cross-country journey, sleeping anywhere she could — from airport lounges to tents and farms.

the day our journey began

Esch now lives and runs both a bed and breakfast and an ice cream shop, but she returns often to Central Florida, where she began and ended her life-changing journey. The adventurer often takes “gigs” here, applying gold leaf to boats, antique cars and retired planes, like those at the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum in Titusville.

It’s where, one recent sunny morning, while applying the labor-intensive gold leaf to a T-2 Buckeye Navy trainer, Esch reminisced about her journey high above the clouds and the notion of putting her stamp upon vintage planes, like she did upon aviation.

“It feels good to be a … small piece of the history,” she said.

500 miles in a toy car: a guinness world record attempt from jacksonville to key west for a worthy cause, 2 women attempt the longest trip by toy car and their journey doubles as a fundraiser to save animals.

Carianne Luter , Digital Media & Engagement Manager

Ciara Earrey , Photojournalist

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – How far have you driven during a road trip? 100 miles, 500 miles? Imagine doing that drive in a toy car.

Two women, Cassie Aran and Lauren, are attempting a 500-mile drive down the coast of Florida to earn the Guinness World Record for Longest Distance by Toy Cars, and their journey began right here in Duval County.

Cassie and Lauren, who asked us not to use her last name, started their journey at Friendship Fountain in Jacksonville and will end at the Southernmost Point Buoy in Key West. With occasional assistance from Cassie’s boyfriend, Brandon Lucante, they expect the attempt to take two months.

Cassie and Lauren’s Story

Cassie and Lauren have been close friends since their kindergarten days in New Jersey, where they rode battery-powered toy cars in the neighborhood.

“This just kind of came as this wild idea because we had these cars as kids,” Lauren said. “We used to ride around with toy cars as kids and have always wanted a Guinness World Record attempt. So we’re like, this would be a fun way to kind of honor our childhood.”

The two have a great relationship and love pushing the boundaries to add excitement and spontaneity into their lives. They aim to inspire others to do the same throughout this process and to remind everyone not to take life so seriously.

“We just love to do crazy adventures and push the limits of what is possible and try to inspire other people in the process,” Lauren said.

The million-dollar question, or record-setting question — why?

Besides aiming for a Guinness World Record — which doesn’t currently exist, by the way — Cassie and Lauren said they’ve transformed the endeavor into a memorable road trip. Why go five miles to set a record with your best friend when you can go 500, right?

And did we mention their mission is also raising money to save animals?

Cassie and Lauren encourage donations by giving shoutouts on social media to their top donors. With more than one million followers on social media platforms such as TikTok, YouTube and Instagram — the duo raised more than $600 during the first 24 hours of their journey.

Their fundraiser aims to reach $10,000, which they will donate to the Red Panda Network in Nepal, the Costa Rica Animal Rescue Center, the Save a Fox Rescue in Minnesota, the World Bird Sanctuary in Missouri and more.

Cassie also owns a clothing company called “The Ear Socks,” where 10% of all proceeds from sales of shirts, stickers and hoodies go toward the Best Friend’s Animal Society to help end all kill shelters by 2025.

You can learn more about their mission to save animals by visiting their website.

Preparation

The Guinness World Record folks are sticklers and getting into the record book isn’t easy.

Cassie and Lauren told News4JAX it took nearly a year for the Guinness team to approve their attempt for the “Longest Distance by Toy Car.”

When they finally gave the pair the “OK,” they also sent a laundry list of requirements the duo will have to track for the attempt to be counted (see below).

One of the first things Cassie, Lauren, and Brandon had to do before starting their journey was drive along their chosen routes to verify accessibility. One of the paths they have to use is through the Everglades.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cassie Aran (@cassie.aran)

Official Rules and Regulations

To receive the official title of “Longest Journey by Toy Car,” Guinness must be 100% certain the two didn’t cheat.

So Cassie and Lauren created a daily checklist to keep track of the dozens of things they must have in order at the end of their journey.

The rulebook: Guinness sent the two a giant rulebook of things they can and can’t do. Some rules include: the shell of the cars must remain the same during the entire journey. The batteries, tires and wires may be replaced, but they must be the same ones that came with the vehicle. They must carry specific things with them at all times. Cassie and Lauren must adhere to these specific guidelines, and more, outlined by Guinness World Records for the record they are attempting.

The logbook & witness book: The two must also use a logbook to track every stop they make, even if it’s to use the bathroom. They must record why they stopped in the logbook and include photos, receipts, and signatures (witness statements) of individuals who saw them there. They also must take a picture with every known Florida landmark along the route. These details provide comprehensive and verifiable evidence that supports the record attempt. Cassie and Lauren will also use their video recordings on social media as documentation of their day-to-day journey.

“The daily checklist is like our Bible,” Cassie said. “Like, if we miss one little thing, it’s over. We could lose the whole world record if we left one thing off that checklist.”

GPS tracker: Guinness World Records gave Cassie and Lauren a GPS tracker they must turn on every day before their journey to ensure the attempt is accurate and authentic and that they’re not cheating or manipulating data. The GPS tracks where they go, how fast they go, when they stop, etc.

The two must follow the Guinness guidelines, which include making safety a priority so they don’t hurt themselves or anyone else.

Break any of the rules and Cassie and Lauren will not be awarded the record.

“It’s a lot,” Lauren said. “It’s intensive and it’s all day. It’s a lot of work. It’s not like we’re just driving cars all day. It’s a lot of logging things and taking photos and getting signatures.”

(Note: The video below was filmed before Cassie and Lauren’s first failed attempt. The vehicles have since been changed)

Trials and tribulations

This isn’t Cassie and Lauren’s first attempt at the record. The toy cars they used on their first go-round hit the sidewalk and failed them only a few miles in.

“The first time that we attempted this, the batteries did not last as long as they did in testing for us, and it was like half as long,” Lauren said.

The two weren’t even out of Jacksonville before they had to start over, this time with new vehicles — Freddo Rocket toy cars. The two-seaters can handle rough terrain and can reach 11 mph (now you see why it’s going to take at least two months). The cars have headlights, emergency brakes and even play music. One major obstacle they face while driving these cars is they must steer clear of significant cracks and potholes due to the low clearance of their vehicle.

When they tested the battery life on the Freddo Rocket cars, they lasted around 11 miles. Yes, that means they have to stop to change out their batteries every 11(ish) miles. They plan on charging the batteries overnight at hotels.

With the new cars, they were off again and so far, so good.

But of course, it’s Florida.

The weather and other factors will come into play for sure. How fast can an alligator go again?

Cassie and Lauren said that when it rains, they have to use car covers and umbrellas to protect the vehicles and essentially have to ride out the storm.

To stay updated on Cassie and Lauren’s journey, check out their YouTube , Instagram , Facebook , and TikTok channels, or visit their website . Learn more about The Ear Socks .

News4JAX is rooting for you, Cassie and Lauren, and we know you’ve got this! Keep on driving.

Topeka couple reflects on new role as parents as Kansas pursues anti-transgender bills

the day our journey began

March 11 was already slated to be a special day for Serana Darkmoon and Austin Dalton.

Friends and family were to gather in celebration for the couple's baby shower. The couple of two years had considered fostering or adopting a child one day as they weren't sure they would be able to conceive.

The pregnancy was good fortune.

Hours after the shower, Darkmoon and Dalton rushed to the hospital. Their daughter was coming 18 days early.

Labor was mercifully quick. Delilah arrived, and Darkmoon and Dalton began their journey in parenthood.

As transgender parents in Topeka, they have a message for Kansas legislators they say have been unfairly targeting people who are transgender: They're part of this community, too.

Fear for the future but also hope

Darkmoon is a 29-year-old transgender woman who was born and raised out of state, and Dalton is a 23-year-old transgender man who was born and raised in Topeka. They said they are navigating being transgender parents in a state that is trying to restrict the actions of people like them.

Darkmoon and Dalton have tried to imagine the world their daughter will grow up in, they said. They're scared of what may may come.

"It's honestly scary," Darkmoon said, "but all we can do is continue to hope that people open their minds and start to realize that we're not going anywhere, and we've been here forever."

Anti-transgender bills pursued in Kansas Legislature

In recent months, lawmakers have pursued anti-transgender legislation while Republican Attorney General Kris Kobach has pushed policy changes that affect transgender people's lives.

In the 2024 legislative session, the focus has been a bill to ban gender-affirming care for youths . While Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly is expected to veto the bill if it reaches her desk, Republican legislators could have the supermajorities needed to override her.

Meanwhile, Kobach has won an initial victory in a lawsuit against Kelly's administration to block gender marker changes on drivers licenses . He has also warned four school districts , including Topeka USD 501, of his belief that policies against outing trans students are a violation of parental rights .

In last year's session, lawmakers overrode Kelly's veto on a bill banning transgender women from entering gendered places like restrooms and shelters and another bill banning transgender athletes from participating in girl's and women's sports.

"The extremists introducing these hostile bills are playing political theater and using them as a wedge issue to misdirect from the real concerns of everyday Kansans," American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas director Rashane Hamby said. "Our government should not undermine our freedom to be who we are, and we should all consider how terrifying it is to be so specifically targeted by people with this much power and discretion.

"Our organization has personally received a number of panicked emails from the LGBTQ+ community and especially trans Kansans, their family members, and young people, who are understandably confused and scared. While we can't lose sight of what's at stake, we should remember the community's incredible resilience and continue to remain in solidarity in our vision for an inclusive Kansas that lives up to its reputation as the Free State.”

'There's no reason for any kind of hate'

Despite Darkmoon's and Dalton's fears, they are hopeful for the future they will provide to Delilah.

"Honestly, the world I want to see her raised in is one where everyone loves everybody," Darkmoon said. "There's no reason for any kind of hate, whether it be race, sex, religion, anything like that, and there should be a world where everyone can coexist without there being so much hatred and bigotry for no reason."

Darkmoon said exploring her femininity and support within the LGBTQ+ community over the past few years has made those years her best ones. She said she intends to provide that same love and support to her child — no matter who Delilah grows up to be.

Darkmoon said she hasn't had contact with her family in many years, but knowing her child will be raised by loving supportive parents is all that matters.

"It gives me hope," she said. "There's so many people that have been either neglected or traumatized or outcast by their family because they were different. So, knowing I can give my daughter a world where she has that love and acceptance no matter what that may mean, no matter who she may become, it means that we can create something better than what we have now."

Darkmoon's hope is more people will understand transgender people and transgender parents are just like everyone else and deserve a chance to be recognized and live peacefully.

"I feel like it's a big deal for the community because there's a lot of stigma against transgender people, especially here in Topeka, Kansas," she said. "For everybody to see a beautiful child — a beautiful healthy girl — being raised by two loving transgender parents I think will help normalize it in society and kind of help people understand we are not what a lot of media portrays us to be."

Both parents have received overwhelming support from Dalton's family and the Topeka community, they said. Darkmoon said while they were at Stormont Vail Health, they received the care and support they needed.

Neither Darkmoon nor Dalton have gone through hormonal treatment or surgery.

Darkmoon said she hopes people understand one doesn't have to go through a medical procedure to be who they are on the inside and how that will be one of the many lessons she will teach their daughter.

"We want people to see that if they are thinking about doing this it's OK, that there is absolutely nothing wrong with this and it doesn't change who you are or who you identify as," Darkmoon said. "Even though (Dalton) carried, he's still dad and even though I didn't, I'm still mom. (Delilah is) going to grow up knowing that and she's going to be educated on what that means. She won't be confused like a lot of people think she will be."

Why stay in Kansas?

While they have received support in Topeka, Darkmoon said they also have faced discrimination. Darkmoon and Dalton were asked if they had ever considered leaving.

Their answer, they said, isn't as simple as packing up and leaving. It is expensive to move and could be even more expensive to live. They would also have to consider where is considered a safe haven for transgender people.

Neither are currently working. Darkmoon said she was fired from her job after Delilah's birth and believes it was for discriminatory reasons as she was the only transgender employee. She is an aspiring makeup artist and wants to pursue social media.

"If I'm honest with you, I don't want to stay, not in Topeka," said Darkmoon. "The problem is not necessarily a lack of desire to leave. It's more so, with the current state of the economy and the stereotypes and discrimination against trans people, it's really hard to build up those finances to be able to."
