Nomi Highchair – Our Review

  • April 4, 2017
  • 4 minute read

Nomi highchair

We have been using the Nomi highchair for our third baby. Read on to hear our full Nomi highchair review, plus our verdict on Nomi VS Stokke Tripp Trapp (the highchair brand that we used previously for our two older children)

Nomi highchair review

Call me fickle, but since we redecorated our dining area, I really wanted a highchair that would complement. The thought of yet another glaring bit of plastic baby paraphenalia just didn’t fill me with joy.

Nomi VS stokke tripp trapp

Enter the Nomi highchair with it’s gorgeous modern design, and I was suddenly excited – a highchair that would actually look good in our space. But looking good is far from the most important thing when it comes to highchairs – would the Nomi highchair prove to be a decent, functional highchair?

Nomi highchair review

What we particularly like about the Nomi highchair

Since getting our nice new wood floor, we do tend to wince at the sound of a chair being scraped back and forth as we sit down to the table. The wheels on the back legs of the Nomi highchair are a clever inclusion that prevents scratching to delicate floors.

Lightweight

We tend to find our highchair moves around quite a lot depending on whether we are eating at the table or breakfast bar, and without a doubt, we move it after every meal time for cleaning the floor. We’ve had heavy highchairs in the past, and you really notice it when you have to move it three times per day. The Nomi highchair is one of the lightest we’ve used, and a light highchair makes the world of difference.

Having a footrest rather than having his legs dangle means Otto is in the best ergonomic position and his Nomi highchair naturally encourages him to sit up straight with good posture.

Nomi VS stokke tripp trapp

Nomi Highchair Design

There’s no doubt about it, since we moved to our new house and redesigned our dining space to suit our tastes, I have become a little bit of a highchair snob. The highest criteria for a highchair will always be how easy it is to use and clean, but these days, design is a close second. A trivial point, maybe. But after going to all that effort with our house design, we want a highchair that blends in and compliments our space, rather than sticking out like a sore, garish plastic, thumb. The Nomi highchair, with it’s clean lines and neutral colours, looks the part with our whitewashed wood and white colour scheme.

Nomi highchair

Nomi Highchair Tray

Yay, the Nomi highchair comes with a tray! This is really a requirement for me when considering a highchair. In the early days of weaning, I find it particularly useful to have a tray, rather than a highchair that sits up at the table. The great thing with the Nomi highchair is that it does both. And the tray pops on and off really easily so it’s very simple to switch between standalone highchair with tray, and table-side highchair.

Anything we don’t like about the Nomi highchair?

We’ve been using our Nomi highchair daily for the past couple of months. I actually haven’t found any negatives yet. There are a few small crevices between the seat and the ‘stem’ of the Nomi highchair where food likes to collect, but I’ve found that the same on most highchairs we’ve used in the past, the Stokke Tripp Trapp included. Once you know where these areas are, you know to pay extra attention to them.

We opted for the white version of the Nomi highchair, and so far, Otto has eaten things like spaghetti bolognaise straight off the tray and it’s cleaned off with no hint of discolouration at all I’m interested to see how this holds up in a year or two’s time – will the white still be white? Or will it have suffered from food staining over time?

Update: We’ve had our Nomi highchair for over two years now, and we still use it daily for Otto’s meals. I am pleased to report that our Nomi highchair is still as white as the day we received it.

Nomi highchair review

Nomi VS Stokke Tripp Trapp highchair

I couldn’t really write this Nomi highchair review without comparing it up against our previous highchair, the Stokke Tripp Trapp. Nomi VS Tripp Trapp is a really common debate, both highchairs having a similar modern, sleek look, and ‘grow with the child’ capabilities. We have owned and used both the Nomi highchair and the Stokke Tripp Trapp, so here are the main differences between the Nomi and the Tripp Trapp:

  • The Nomi highchair has less wood, so it’s a little bit lighter and easier to move around compared to the Stokke Tripp Tripp.
  • The Nomi highchair looks good as new two years on, whereas our Stokke Tripp Trapp had suffered from chipped paint work at the same age. As the seat and foot area of the Nomi highchair is plastic, VS the Tripp Trapp’s all wood look, there are less dents and chips to be found after repeated use.

In the case of Nomi VS Stokke Tripp Trapp, I think the choice really comes down to which look you prefer. We still have both our Nomi highchair and our Stokke Tripp Trapp in our house, and both are still used daily by our family. Whether you opt for the Nomi highchair or the Stokke Tripp Trapp, both are excellent adjustable highchairs that will give you a heap of longevity.

The verdict on our Nomi highchair review

We really like our Nomi highchair. It blends in really well with our dining room decor, and its striking design is definitely a talking piece whenever we have visitors. Otto is very happy sitting and eating in his Nomi highchair. And we love that it gives us the option to bring him closer to the table at family mealtimes, whilst also working as a standalone highchair with tray for the times when that is easier.

The Nomi is a chair that will grow with Otto right up until his teenage years, and will no doubt be a permanent fixture at our dining table for many years to come.

still no discolouration ?

Surprisingly none at all! We’re still using this highchair and my son is 2 and a bit now so it’s been a good year and a half

discolouration

Is there any difference in stability between two? Mainly worried about if baby tries to push the table with their legs, would it top over easily? Which seems sturdier?

The feet of the Nomi are quite deep, I think it would be hard to tip. The Nomi is more lightweight than the wooden Tripp Trapp. Nomi has runners on the feet, which does open the possibility of your baby realising they can shuffle backward in it with a bit of bum wiggling.

Hello, I am debating on buying a Stokke Nomi or a Stokke Tripp Trapp as the high chair for my first child. I have been reading reviews and am still unsure. If you were to buy again would you go with the Nomi or Tripp Trapp?

My preference would be Tripp Trapp with a tray, as we are still using our Tripp Trapp now as an occasional child seat / step ladder . We also still use the Nomi with our 3 yr old but will move him to the Tripp Trapp soon.

I read the food tray has a tilt foward. Is that true?

I haven’t heard that. Our tray is completely level, but our model is from 2016/17 so not sure if this could be a design change in recent years.

Is the Stokke Tripp Trapp Worth It? I Tried It to Find Out!

Picture this: a high chair that grows with your child from birth, seamlessly blending into your home decor, and making baby-led weaning a breeze. Intrigued? I was too.

But then I looked at the price of the Stokke Tripp Trapp and went for the Clikk instead on my registry, only to regret it and ultimately sell it. Now that I’ve put the Tripp Trapp to the test, these are my honest thoughts as a mom on whether or not it’s worth buying:

Table of Contents

Is The Stokke Tripp Trapp a Quality Investment?

stokke tripp trapp review

I had a business coach who said the poor man spends more on suits than the rich man because quality suits last a lifetime. When it comes to baby gear the same is true. The Stokke Tripp Trapp high chair, and the brand in general with its Scandinavian design and robust construction, stood out to me is a sturdy and reliable choice that lasts. After testing it, not only is it much easier to not trip over, but it’s solid enough to stay in place in a way that the Clikk did not.

The design has a smaller footprint than most high chairs, and it has a foot plate that catches food better than high chairs that don’t have one. Plus, it can hold up to 242 pounds, making it a chair that truly grows with your child – and even beyond!

I particularly appreciate the attention to detail in the design, making the Tripp Trapp not just a functional piece but also a stylish addition to anyone’s home with the beechwood construction and wide array of neutral finishes and seat pads. It’s also quite easy to take apart and clean, and I find the harness easier than many other high chairs I’ve tried.

In a nutshell, even though it’s pricey, I think it’s worth it, especially if you can get it secondhand or will be using it for multiple kids.

Here’s the breakdown on the different features, add ons, and downsides:

From Birth to Childhood – How to Use the Tripp Trapp from Day One

stokke tripp trapp review

One of the standout features of the Stokke Tripp Trapp is its versatility that adapts as your child grows from the newborn days to the toddler years.

Newborn Set

The Newborn Set attachment allows you to bring your newest family member to the table from day one. It’s a cozy design that provides a safe and comfortable spot for your baby, fostering a sense of togetherness during mealtime.

While I love the look of it, I found that our hand me down Fisher Price swing achieved the same thing, although it didn’t bring my baby to the table with us. He was further down below and couldn’t see what was going on at the table, but he didn’t seem to mind.

However, if you don’t need yet another thing in your home and want baby involved in meals from day one, even if just as a spectator, it’s a fantastic way to promote bonding and ensures that your baby is part of the family dynamic right from the start. It’s also a good place to dock your baby even when it’s not mealtime.

stokke tripp trapp review

As your baby starts to explore the world of solids, the Baby Set comes into play. This attachment includes an ergonomic backrest and five point harness, though annoyingly, the tray and padding is sold separately. Still, the adjustable footrest with many potential positions makes this great for babyled weaning, where a footrest is important to keep baby’s posture to avoid choking. This is one of very few high chairs that has such an adjustable footrest and is one of the biggest reasons I’d have gotten this from day one if I could turn back time.

Nordstrom has a full, complete set with cushion and tray for $419. It comes in a pleasing array of colors and all of them are classy. As someone who is quite fond of patterns and things that match, it checks my boxes.

Toddler Settings

Fast forward to the toddler years, and it goes into chair mode. Removing the high backrest and tray and moving down the footrest, this set transforms the Tripp Trapp into a chair that accommodates your child’s growing independence and allows them to climb into their seat on their own.

stokke tripp trapp review

Since most high chairs don’t do this, it’s nice to have the chair continue to be useful. My friends with a 2 and 4 year old still use theirs, and comment often about how nice it is to still have the footrest that’s big enough to catch food when it falls.

It’s worth mentioning here that there’s another option with even more potential adjustability – the Ergobaby Evolve, which is now the high chair we use at home. It isn’t quite as adjustable or stylish as the Tripp Trapp, but it can be made into a kitchen helper stool, and I love that about it. Read my full Ergobaby high chair review.

Baby-Led Weaning: Adjustability Is Key

The biggest reason I wish I’d had this from the start is for baby-led weaning. The Stokke Tripp Trapp is a dream come true for moms who embrace this approach. Its adjustability allows you to tailor the chair’s height to your child so that they have the support they need. Very few high chairs offer this kind of adjustability.

As I mentioned earlier, we had the Stokke Clikk during the babyled weaning months and I immediately saw the downsides. Yes, it was cheaper, but there were only two foot pedal heights and neither of them worked for our baby. It also had such a wide seat, even our 100th percentile baby was too small for it. Finally, the legs stuck out so much that were constantly tripping over it, and it wasn’t sturdy enough to not be moved quite a bit when we did so, which my baby didn’t appreciate (and neither did we).

The Other Stokke Contenders

stokke clikk alternatives

While the Tripp Trapp steals the show, Stokke offers alternatives that cater to different needs and preferences.

Stokke Steps: A Modular Approach

If you’re looking for a versatile high chair that adapts to your child’s changing needs, the Stokke Steps is worth considering. With a modular design that includes a bouncer and a high chair, it offers flexibility from the newborn days through toddlerhood.

While the Steps provides a comprehensive solution, the Tripp Trapp’s design makes it much easier to navigate around without tripping, which is so easy to do when a high chair has a wide footprint like the Steps or Clikk.

Stokke Clikk: Affordable and Portable (but still, I hate it)

I will never understand why the Clikk had so many positive reviews. It’s got a wide footprint and isn’t very adjustable, and once my son figured out he could move it on his own by rocking really hard forward, we had to finally get rid of it. It wasn’t sturdy nor safe.

Stokke boasts that it can break down and for easy portability, and while I agree it’s easy to assemble and disassemble, why not get something like the Hiccapop or Inglesina if you’re worried about portability? They’re much smaller and you can actually fly with them.

Stokke Nomi

A newcomer for Stokke, the Nomi looks like part high chair, part space ship chair to me. The foot pedal looks even easier to adjust to truly any height you need, and the chair height can also be adjusted.

The footprint is entirely on the floor, so it would be less likely, though never impossible, to trip over it. It’s also slightly cheaper at $369 for the complete set.

However, if you’re looking for a high chair that grows with your child and offers a wide range of accessories, the Tripp Trapp remains my go-to choice.

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room – the price tag. The Stokke Tripp Trapp is undeniably an investment.

However, when you consider the quality, longevity, and versatility it brings to the table (literally!), it becomes clear that you’re not just buying a high chair – you’re investing in a piece of furniture that evolves with your family.

It eliminates the need for multiple high chairs as your child grows. The Tripp Trapp’s durability ensures that it can be passed down to younger siblings or even generations to come, making it a sustainable choice for eco-conscious moms.

So if you’re ready to elevate your dining experience with a high chair that’s as stylish as it is functional, the Stokke Tripp Trapp might just be the perfect choice with a touch of Scandinavian flair!

Nomi High Chair Review

Price $ 379

Echelon $ $ $ $

Prior to having kids, I was all about aesthetic. Fashion over function: that was my M.O. Since becoming a mother, this philosophy has changed drastically, though my inner fashionista is still always looking for baby gear that’s as chic as it is functional.

nomi high chair in black

So when I first spotted the new Nomi High Chair at the ABC Kids Show a few years ago (this back pre-pandemic when they were having baby shows…), I was instantly intrigued. Here was a gorgeous high chair – sleek and modern – that can be used in a myriad of ways from birth and beyond.

nomi high chair extends

We fell so in love we even went live on Facebook  to report our new discovery. Was it beautiful? Yes! But was it also uber functional? Totes! And so I just HAD to try it out for myself (full disclosure: they sent me a sample).

Separated at Birth?

When I registered for my first son (6 years ago!), a number of people insisted I get the famous Stokke Tripp Trapp. People spoke of the Tripp Trapp as if it were the  only  high chair in the world, a literal  legend among baby items.

other high chairs

Being the amateur I was, I went with one that was cheaper (I will not name names) and, well, after two kids I was ready to light the thing on fire and toss it out the front door. I could never get the darn thing clean enough and it  literally  started to disintegrate into shreds.

Something seemed strangely familiar between the Nomi and the Tripp Trapp: design, longevity of the product, functionality. Were we imagining this? It was then we were made aware that the designer of the Tripp Trapp — Peter Opsvik — also designed the Nomi (for his grandkids, this time). How cool!

Nomi High Chair Review — Set Up

Upon opening the box, I was thrilled to see the Nomi came with its own set of allen wrenches (love!). I’m also happy to report that the instructions were quite easy to follow; all in all, it took me about 15 minutes total to get this sucker up and running.

Pros and Cons

So remember when I said I like pretty things? This chair is just that: gorje!

Like the Tripp Trapp, the Nomi is ergonomic and very comfortable for littles. When you adjust the height of the seat and footrest, the depth is automatically aligned thanks to the unique shape of the stem.

The stem is made from FSC-certified steam-bent veneer, which provides maximum strength and flexibility.

adjustable knobs on nomi high chair

Bonus : For young infants (less than 6 months), check out the Nomi Baby Accessory . At ~$189, it may seem $$$$, but it’s actually less than the price of the BABYBJORN Bouncer or the Nuna Leaf — if you want your high chair to work for you, the newborn bouncer accessory can effectively convert the Nomi high chair into a lounger. This is great for small spaces because it saves you from needing a separate bouncer .

nomi accessories

Unlike other bouncers that sit on the ground, the Nomi bouncer accessory raises the Nomi to table height, which makes engaging with baby so much easier for the entire family (it also gets baby out of dog-face-licking range, pestering older sibling range, etc.).

Once baby is starting solids and can sit up unassisted, he is ready for the regular high chair function. You can either use the high chair with its tray, or simply pull it up to the table so your baby can eat off the table’s surface with the rest of the fam (like the Tripp Trapp). The Nomi offers a safety restraint at the waist and a harness with a buckle to keep baby safely in the chair while eating at the table.

nomi harness with buckle

My favorite part: this high chair is insanely easy to clean and wipe down . Even spaghetti sauce didn’t stain the white components on our chair.

Get this: because the chair is so lightweight, you can hang it on the table edge so you can clean under it. That is crazy-genius stuff right there!!

hang nomi high chair

After 2+ years of age, your child will be ready to transition to “Nomi Chair.” This means you can use the chair without the restraint and harness. Our 2 ½ year old is just graduating to this function, and he loves it! He feels like such a “big boy,” yet is still safely confined in a high chair while he eats (win for him; win for Mom!).

kid eating in nomi chair

The chair is available in a number of color combinations. Specifically, the wooden stem of the chair is available in a few oak finishes, sure to compliment any home interior. The seat, restraint and footrest are also available in a number of colors.

nomi high chair wood options

Also nice is that the base of the chair has a set of wheels so you can move the Nomi around without dragging it across your nice flooring (looking at you, my precious hardwood flooring). Don’t worry though: the wheels are anti-tilt so our crazy toddler friends can’t tip themselves over (like my 2-year-old would 100% try to do).

In the critique department, I wish this high chair could be folded somehow — especially for urban families who live in smaller spaces.

I also wish the chair came with certain accessories, such as the tray and cushion, especially given it’s steep price point ($379!). I really think a tray is an essential component of any high chair, though I understand the philosophy of the Nomi (and the Tripp Trapp) is that the baby should sit at the table with the rest of the family during mealtimes. I get that — I really do… yet, I still think it should come with a tray.

All in all, the Nomi really is a really cool unicorn: attractive AND functional, and will truly grow with my child. It’s beautiful, easy to clean, and will be a fixture in our house for years to come. It’s a strong contender among our top picks for high chairs .

Have you tried this chair? If so, we’d love to hear your thoughts! Leave ’em in the comments below.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!
