Programs in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a stunning Caribbean jewel of white sand beaches, coral reefs, mangroves, rain forests, waterfalls, and rivers. Beneath its natural beauty, this island reveals layer upon layer of history: a native Taíno culture, four centuries of Spanish colonialism, and now 105 years and counting as a territory of the United States. Hurricane Maria destroyed much of the island in 2017 and sparked the largest government bankruptcy in US history. Now, this island nation of 3.3 million (and shrinking) continues in crisis and its future is a question mark. In this program, we partner with nonprofits, schools, and local leaders working to rebuild Puerto Rico in the coastal town of Salinas.

We begin with a 2-day orientation in San Juan, where we explore the history, art, and culture of this 500-year-old colonial city. We visit the Catedral de San Juan, walk the streets of Old San Juan, and enjoy the beach. On day three, we transfer to Salinas where we stay at the Albergue Olímpico , a state-of-the-art sports, and educational facility. In Salinas, we have the opportunity to learn from nonprofit leaders in agriculture, education, and health care. During the evening, the group reconvenes for evening reflections around global issues, leadership, and local culture. At the end of the program, students will return to San Juan before catching our return flight to the United States.

Many historians consider Puerto Rico to be the “world’s oldest colony.” After four centuries as a Spanish colony, the USA took over the island after the 1898 Spanish American War. As a Territory of the United States since 1917, Puerto Ricans can be drafted for the US military but are not able to fully control their own economy, vote in a presidential election, or have a voting representative in the US Congress.

Puerto Rico’s recovery from Hurricane Maria has been slowed by restrictions placed on emergency aid, which were only released in 2021. Florida and Texas, which also suffered disasters in 2017, received unrestricted funding and therefore recovered faster. These disparities have many Puerto Ricans asking: should we become the 51st state of the USA or our own independent nation?

Puerto Rico is a rich blend of European, African, and North American influences that emerge in the island’s food, dance, and music. Salinas offers a unique perspective into Puerto Rican culture and the region’s indigenous Taíno roots. Rebuilding in Salinas has been an uphill battle but there are bright spots. Tourism has resumed, outside investors are returning, and new nonprofit organizations have emerged. In the wake of the destruction, ordinary people have stepped forward as dynamic community leaders, who we have a chance to meet.

The safety of our programs rests on the experience and skills of our Staff, Country Coordinators and Instructors, who convene at our annual training in Colorado’s Arkansas Valley. - The Staff of World Leadership School have decades of experience working in different educational environments. Their focus is logistics, risk management, program design, professional development, and consulting. - Our Country Coordinators live and work year round in our overseas countries. They screen our homestay families, evaluate our transport and other service providers, and provide ground support for our groups. - Our Instructors are veteran educators with extensive international experience. They have wilderness first responder training and often have past affiliations with Peace Corps, Outward Bound, NOLS , and/or independent schools.

We strive to responsibly manage risks. Our itineraries minimize highway travel and maximize immersion in rural communities that we know well. We update our risk management protocols, integrate feedback into program design, and invest in safety and communication equipment. Despite these efforts, World Leadership School cannot guarantee safety nor can it eliminate the inherent and other risks of international student travel. For information regarding program activities and associated risks, risk management, and student and parent responsibilities, please contact our office.

“This trip showed me how traveling doesn't always have to be just observing other cultures but rather it can involve engaging with and learning from different people and their customs. I feel like I'll go home ready to make a positive change in my community and to spend more time with people (without our phones!)” - Packer Collegiate Institute, Peru 2019

“This program was truly one of, if not the most, transformative and meaningful experiences I've ever had. It is something I will genuinely remember forever. The people we met and the powerful stories they told will certainly drive me towards helping to solve the humanitarian issues that I witnessed.” - Colorado Rocky Mountain School, El Paso 2019

Frequently Asked Questions

We use the term “Collaborative Leadership Programs” to describe all of our student travel. Collaborative refers to all the relationships and learning that happen when students work alongside peer students and local leaders from the host community.

WLS is more than a travel provider. We are a school change agent. We not only help our schools build immersive travel programs, but we integrate these programs into classroom learning in order to drive innovation.

We are disciplined about the travel programs we work on in order to pursue our mission to “partner with K-12 schools to reimagine learning and create next-generation leaders.” We focus on long-term, partnership-based travel programs with schools that are seeking to bring greater purpose to learning. We support the integration of these programs into classroom learning via support services for educators such as workshops, coaching, and conferences.

There is an understandable backlash against service learning done wrong. For too long, organizations have offered experiences that are poorly planned, episodic, and transactional. Volunteers arrive and depart with the illusion of helping. The reality is that these volunteers can do more harm than good. At World Leadership School, we believe that traveling students can be a powerful force for good if service learning is done responsibly. We have a long track record of positive results in the communities where we operate. Many of our programs involve Community Projects, while other programs focus on NGO collaboration or work with our partner nonprofit, TeachUNITED .

Our approach to service learning is “Walking Together.” We build long-term, year-round relationships with communities via our country coordinators, who live close to our communities. We pair a maximum of two traveling schools with a host community to ensure sustainability and deep relationships. We listen to and work alongside local leaders in order to accomplish community goals, rather than come in with new ideas. Our students are prepared ahead of time to listen and learn, rather than help.

  • Focus on one place, one partnership. Our groups spend their entire time in a single community and the focus is building a strong partnership. Our traveling schools go back year after year to this same place. Though students change each year, many faculty return year after year to the same community.
  • Work like an NGO . Since 2007, our sister nonprofit World Leadership Foundation has invested $950,000 in donations raised each year by students. These funds are invested in Community Projects , which are planned by the communities in which we operate.
  • Our traveling students also support many of the same rural schools served by TeachUNITED, which spun off from World Leadership Foundation in 2020. TeachUNITED works to transform rural education in Tanzania, Costa Rica, and rural USA through an innovative combination of side-by-side instructional coaches, teacher workshops, tablet technology, and online learning.

Each year, World Leadership School staff, instructors, and country coordinators manage approximately 900 students and faculty on immersive programs across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the U.S. Our staff and instructors have extensive experience and training in risk management, which is a focus of our annual spring instructor training retreat. World Leadership School offers risk management workshops to our partner schools.

Our approach to risk management emphasizes three principles:

Risk management is a continuous conversation that happens at all levels of a program at once and we structure that conversation with a simple tool we call AMP (Analyze, Manage, Prepare). This conversation happens at the level of our Staff , who are in close connection with school leaders and parents; our Coordinators , who work with our communities before, during, and after a program; our Instructors and Faculty , who build a close working relationship; and our Students , who run AMP sessions each morning.

Keep it simple. We make risk protocols simple so that our Staff, Coordinators, Instructors, Faculty, and Students are all on the same page.

Education and risk management go hand in hand. When programs are integrated with classroom learning, risk management improves. We help our schools integrate off-campus programs into the classroom via a variety of educator development services.

We strive to responsibly manage risks. Our itineraries minimize highway travel and maximize immersion in rural communities that we know well. We update our risk management protocols, integrate feedback into program design, and invest in safety and communication equipment. For a complete summary of our approach, read this article in Independent School magazine.

Despite these efforts, World Leadership School cannot guarantee safety nor can it eliminate the inherent and other risks of international student travel. For information regarding program activities and associated risks, risk management, and student and parent responsibilities, please contact our office .

For more information about our COVID -19 policies, please visit the COVID -19 page .

Most of our programs have 10-15 participants, 1-2 faculty from the traveling school, and 1-2 Instructors. We strive for a 1:4 ratio of adults to students. WLS also designs full-class programs with 60-80 students and 10-15 teachers. We work closely with these schools to divide the larger group into smaller groups during the day.

Many World Leadership School students travel each year to places like Peru and Costa Rica with no knowledge of Spanish, to Tanzania with no knowledge of Swahili, to Haiti without knowledge of Haitian Creole, etc. We believe communicating across cultural lines in the absence of a common language is an important 21st century skill. To help students manage homestays in another language, we help students develop a survival vocabulary in the local language. We also take language fluency into account when doing homestay pairings.

Many of the students from our programs come back from their extraordinary experience and wonder: “What is next?” There are many ways to stay engaged once a program is over. Past World Leadership School alumni have taken their WLS experience deeper by working with their partner community on a research project throughout college.

We love to hear from all past program participants and students! Please take this quick online survey to give us an idea of what you’ve done since your WLS experience. Like us on Facebook , follow us on Twitter , and Instagram , stay connected to the WLS Alumni Network , and be sure to check out our blog .

Our instructors are seasoned educators who have between 10-15 years of teaching experience in the classroom, wilderness settings, or overseas programs. Many of our instructors are full-time classroom teachers and have a background with the National Outdoor Leadership School or the US Peace Corps. Our instructors have traveled extensively in the developing world and are current on their Wilderness First Responder training. Our instructors are amazing human beings who love working with children, engaging with the world, and leading immersive experiential learning. We bring all our instructors together each April at our annual staff training. For instructor profiles, see “Who We Are.”

Puerto Rico Spanish Immersion Tour

Student travelers will want to visit Puerto Rico to refine their Spanish speaking skills. Students and trip leaders: prepare for an unforgettable trip to the Island of Puerto Rico - a U.S. territory - so no passport is required.  U.S. currency can be used on this Spanish immersion tour, making the planning and execution of a class trip to Puerto Rico far easier (and more economic) than going out of country.

Whether it is exploring the urban historic district of Old San Juan, or taking some time to picnic, snorkel or take a glass boat tour of the coral coves of Puerto Rico, students will find a lot of happiness in testing their Spanish speaking skills in this environment.

Though Puerto Rico is currently part of the U.S. Territories, the Spanish colonized the island after being discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493.  The name Puerto Rico means ‘rich port’ and San Juan was named after Saint John the Baptist, a Catholic saint.

Because of its strategic position in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico was often vied for by foreign powers such as France and the United States. Complicating matters further, the native population of Taino Indians and the Caribe Indians created grave problems for the Spanish during the early days of settlement of Puerto Rico. Today the diverse population of Puerto Rico is free of conquering intruders and it is a pleasant environment for a Spanish speaking class trips.

Planning an Epic Trip to Puerto Rico: Step-by-Step Guide

Pinterest Pin to a guide with tips and advice for how to plan the best trip to Puerto Rico.

So you’ve decided on Puerto Rico for your next trip, excellent choice! Puerto Rico is an incredible island with so many amazing areas to explore. You can truly tailor your Puerto Rico itinerary to fit any kind of trip you’d like to have. Puerto Rico isn’t a one-size-fits-all destination, it has so much to offer. Relaxing beaches? Check. Delicious food? Check. Adventurous, adrenaline inducing experiences? Check and check. Now that you’ve decided on your destination, let’s get right into this guide for planning an incredible trip to Puerto Rico!

Planning a Trip to Puerto Rico

1:  choose your dates wisely.

The first step when planning a Puerto Rico trip is to decide on the time of year you’d like to visit. The best months, in terms of weather, to visit PR are December-April. This is when you’ll get the most mild weather and the least amount of rain.

However, since this is the high season, expect flights and accommodations to be more expensive. If you’d like to potentially save some money on your trip, consider visiting in the summer or fall.

It’s important to keep in mind, however, that June-September is hurricane season. This doesn’t mean there will 100% be a hurricane or bad weather on your trip, but the chances are much higher.

I’ve traveled to PR during many seasons and my favorite time of year to visit is around January/February. The weather is great, the island isn’t too busy and it’s always wonderful to escape a Vermont winter.

My least favorite time of year to visit is the height of the summer, August, for example. Although it’s still beautiful, the high heat and humidity aren’t my favorite.

2: Consider How Much Time You Want to Spend on the Island

If you’re traveling from the East Coast of the US, you can get to PR in about 3.5-4 hours. This means you can easily visit Puerto Rico for a long weekend or just a few days. However, if you can, I definitely recommend staying longer and exploring more of the island.

If you’re only planning to spend a few days in Puerto Rico, I recommend staying in San Juan. That’s where you’ll fly into and there is more than enough to do to fill a few days. Old San Juan, specifically, is my favorite part of San Juan and you can easily spend a full day or two exploring this beautiful neighborhood.

Check out my posts all about how to spend 48 hours in Old San Juan and the best things to do in Old San Juan for an itinerary and tons of recommendations.

If you have more time to spend in Puerto Rico, say a week or ten days, then I highly recommend taking a road trip around the island and checking out the amazing beaches, charming towns and beautiful views. Check out my 7 day road trip around Puerto Rico post for a full itinerary and guide!

3: Plan Your Transportation

If you’re planning to stay in the San Juan area on your trip to Puerto Rico, I don’t recommend a rental car – especially if your trip is short. Ubers are affordable and readily available and most neighborhoods, like Old San Juan and Condado, are very walkable.

If you’re planning on taking a day trip to El Yunque rainforest from San Juan, which I highly recommend you do, there are many guided tours available that provide transportation and an expert guide.

If you’re planning to leave San Juan during your trip, and especially if you’re road tripping around the island, then a rental car is 100% necessary.

4: Understand the Wifi and Electricity Situation

You will find good wifi in many parts of Puerto Rico. However, don’t count on every business and hotel to have great wifi. I’ve stayed in quite a few hotels and AirBnbs that have wifi, but it’s quite slow. I’ve also stayed at properties that have amazing wifi.

If you’re planning to work from home, check with the hotel or AirBnb first to see how strong the wifi signal is.

Power outages

Power outages are common in Puerto Rico. The electrical grid is outdated and is actually the worst in the US. For many Puerto Ricans, blackouts are a part of everyday life – something that is difficult and at times dangerous to live with.

Most hotels and businesses have generators for when these blackouts take place, but it’s important to be aware that these outages can happen.

5: Decide on the Type of Accommodations You Want to Stay In

Puerto Rico is one of those destinations that really has it all. There are luxury beachfront resorts, quaint AirBnbs, eco-stays, budget stays and many more. I like to stay in a mix of property types when I travel, but I definitely gravitate towards boutique hotels.

You’ll also find options at a variety of price points, from affordable hostels to luxury resorts. San Juan definitely has the highest concentration of hotels and guest properties, but you’ll find great options all over the island.

Many people visit PR for the beaches and if a beach vacation is your vibe, check out these awesome properties:

  • Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve (Dorado)
  • The Horned Dorset (Rincon)
  • Condado Vanderbilt Hotel (Condado, San Juan)

If you’re interested in an eco-stay , check these out:

  • El Yunque Rainforest Inn (near el Yunque)
  • Casa Grande Mountain Retreat – Adults Only (Utuado)
  • 4 Casitas (Cabo Rojo)
  • Hacienda el Jibarito (San Sebastian)

Lastly, if boutique hotels are your thing, here are a few of my favorites:

  • Dreamcatcher (Ocean Park, San Juan)
  • O:live Boutique Hotel (Condado, San Juan)
  • Hotel el Convento (Old San Juan)
  • Boutique Hotel Belgica (Ponce)
  • Check out my Instagram reel of the beautiful pool area.

La Parguera Plaza Hotel pool area in La Parguera, Puerto Rico.

6: Book Unique Tours and Activities

When visiting Puerto Rico there are so many fun and unique activities to partake in. You can swim in a bioluminescent bay in La Parguera, visit the only tropical forest in the United States , explore a 500 year old fort and so much more.

There’s really something for everyone, but a few of my top favorite experiences include:

In San Juan:

  • Explore the infamous La Perla neighborhood in Old San Juan with an expert guide.
  • San Juan Guided Snorkel Tour
  • Such a fun way to try delicious Puerto Rican cuisine,.
  • Guided LED Night Kayak Excursion in Condado Lagoon

Bioluminescent Bay sparkling in La Parguera.

Day Trips:

  • Another great El Yunque hiking and swimming option .
  • Journey to one of the other islands in PR – it’s known for its beautiful beaches.
  • This tour is about 2 hours, so it’s a great morning or afternoon activity.

Rock waterslides and waterfalls at El Yunque tropical forest in Puerto Rico.

7: Get Packing!

Puerto Rico consistently has temperatures in the 80s-90s with high humidity, so pack for warm weather. If you’re staying in a hotel, you may want a sweater for the air conditioned lobby, but besides that you likely won’t need one.

One thing to keep in mind when visiting Puerto Rico is that during the warmest, most humid months, re-wearing clothes isn’t always possible. I always try to pack in just a carry-on, and I’ve made the mistake more than once of planning to re-wear outfits on my trips to PR without having access to a washing machine.

Trust me when I say that when it’s that hot and humid and you’re outside all day, you likely won’t want to be re-wearing many of your outfits.

For shoes, I recommend sandals as well as sneakers, especially if you’re planning on doing any hiking or adventurous activities (like ATV riding).

Playa del Capitolio, Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Other items to pack for Puerto Rico:

  • A portable charger
  • Wrinkle release spray (this stuff is amazing)
  • Teva type sandals (great for getting wet)
  • Lots of sunscreen
  • Lightweight long sleeve shirt

FAQ: Planning a Trip to Puerto Rico

  • If you’re from the US you do not need a passport to visit Puerto Rico. Travelers visiting the island from other countries will need a passport.
  • English and Spanish are both official languages in Puerto Rico. However, Spanish is more common and is spoken at home by the vast majority of Puerto Ricans.
  • Most people working in the tourism industry speak English, but don’t be surprised if some don’t.
  • Puerto Rico uses the US dollar.
  • Yes, the tipping culture is similar to the rest of the US. For example, tipping 18-20% in restaurants is common.
  • Yes, your US cell plan will work in Puerto Rico with no additional charges. The strength of your cell signal may vary, but I’ve had good luck all over the island with AT&T.

School Music Trips to Puerto Rico

Discovered by Columbus on his second voyage to the New World, now a commonwealth of the United States, Puerto Rico is where the easygoing Caribbean collides with modern America over Latin rhythms and rose-tinted tropical sunsets. The result is a colorful, diverse and culturally unique island. Explore Puerto Rico, where you can find exotic local hideaways, miles of white sandy beaches, rugged mountains and lush valleys. In addition to the natural splendors, you will find yourself surrounded by warm and friendly people.

San Juan, the capital and largest city of Puerto Rico, possesses one of the biggest and best natural harbors in the Caribbean. San Juan is the second oldest European-founded city in the Americas. Don’t miss Ponce, Puerto Rico’s next most populous city, known as “La Perla del Sur” (The Pearl of the South). Ponce has been declared a national treasure, in part due to its array of plazas, churches, highly decorative colonial homes, glorious fountains and a unique fire station. El Yunque National Forest, whose name means “Forest of Clouds,” is the only tropical rainforest in the United States.

You guys are awesome so thank you in advance for your wisdom and advice. I have 2 High School Seniors that both want to go "out of the country" for their senior trip. They are only 18 but they love night life, bright lights, ocean, eatery's, shops, and walkability. I really don't want to stay in a hotel room. I would prefer a condo, or small house but I am open to any suggestions on areas and things to do.

' class=

Another vote for Marbella del Caribe condos. I've used them and highly recommend them. Right on the beach, within short walking distance to eateries, restaurants and shops, and a great pizza shop right across the street.

As mentioned above, 18 is the legal drinking age, and drinking in PR is not only normal, but also encouraged. Something to think about with teenagers who love nightlife.

Flying to Puerto Rico

There are two primary airports to choose from when flying to Puerto Rico:

Aguadilla Rafael Hernández Airport (BQN)

We highly recommend that visitors (especially those flying from the East Coast of the US) utilize the Aguadilla Airport (BQN). It is only 20 minutes from Rincón and is serviced daily by JetBlue, United and Spirit Airlines.

San Juan International Airport (SJU)

If you’re on a tighter budget or flying from the West Coast, you may choose the much larger San Juan Int’l Airport (SJU), but it requires a 2.5 hour drive to Rincón from metropolitan San Juan.

Driving and Rental Cars in Rincón

We highly recommend that visitors rent a car either in Aguadilla or San Juan for the duration of their stay. Rincón is not an area with easy walking or even biking access due to the more spread out rural area and numerous hills.

Driving to the Rincón Surf Resort

The Rincón Surf Resort at Las Palmas is located at Carr. 413, Interior Road, KM 4.8, Rincón, Puerto Rico 00677. But, most GPS systems will not recognize this address. To locate us, follow these directions:

FROM SAN JUAN:  Set your GPS for Aguadilla, PR and take the exit to the right leaving San Juan airport (do not take the bridge), following signs for PR-26 West and the Minillas Tunnel. After going through the tunnel, take the PR-22 (tollway) West exit towards Bayamon/Arecibo when leaving San Juan airport. Follow PR-22 until it ends in Arecibo and becomes Route 2. Continue to follow Route 2 until you reach the first Walgreens in Aguadilla at the intersection with PR-107. Go straight and continue on Route 2 for 5.5 miles to a large pedestrian overpass and a traffic light at the intersection of Route #417. Make a right turn on Route #417. About two miles after making the right turn, look for a sign in the middle of the road indicating “Avenida Nativo Alers” sharply to the left in front of a Cemetery entrance. Take the sharp left onto Avenida Nativo Alers until it dead ends into Route #115, where you will take a left towards Rincon. Drive for about four miles to reach the intersection of Route #413 where it veers sharply up the hill on the right. Take the right uphill onto Route #413 and follow it until you see the GULF gas station (open 24 hours). Take the right turn immediately after the GULF gas station, following the road down to the bottom of the hill and along the beach. When you see the TAMBOO, make a left turn at the next road and proceed 250 feet to the Rincon Surf Resort at Casa Verde Hotel. If you have any issues, do not hesitate to call: 787.823.0610 .

FROM AGUADILLA:  Turn left to leave at the stop sign to exit the airport towards the city of Aguadilla. This road leaving the airport turns into Route #107 – continue through Aguadilla until you reach the (large) intersection with Highway #2. As you approach Highway #2, stay right following signs towards Mayaguez. Stay on Highway #2 for approximately 5.5 miles, where you will see a large pedestrian overpass and a traffic light at the intersection of Route #417. 24 Awesome US Graduation Trip Ideas for Your 2024 Senior

Boy in front of Lake Tahoe - Lake Tahoe to Yosemite

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. At no extra cost to you, I only recommend products I have experience with. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Are you looking for some awesome graduation trip ideas for your senior? I’ve been there and I have a list of ideas that are perfect for your teen!

This year I have a senior in high school. When I started this blogging journey, it was to help families travel more before their kids’ grow up and move out . And now I’m here. My son is about to embark on his college journey and move out, at least for a little while. Which is why I needed some ideas for a graduation trip he won’t forget.

I promised each of my children to take them on fun senior trips. I fully believe travel helps us spend quality time together that we don’t get in our day-to-day lives. Travel removes the responsibilities of home life, school, activities, and obligations. And since I’ve focused on travel with teenagers over the last 10 years, many of our past vacations inspired me to create this list.

As a high school senior (who’s also dual-enrolled to earn his Associate’s Degree) there is a lot of stress and pressure of finishing school, choosing a college, moving away from home, meeting new people, and all that those life changes bring. One last hurrah and a trip of a lifetime is not only a way to celebrate this important time in his life, it’s a great way to have family time before his next big step.

As someone deeply passionate about family travel, I’ve been on this blogging journey to help families make the most of their grad trips. The following fun senior trip ideas cover everything from a group graduation vacation, travel with a senior class, or epic trips for high school graduates with friends or family .

Here’s the deal: Research consistently emphasizes the positive impact of well-planned graduation trips, not just on the graduating senior but on the entire family. Families who’ve followed my suggestions have had some incredible journeys.

Graduation Trips on a Budget

High school graduation trips do not have to break the bank. Depending on the kind of trip your teen wants, finding affordable graduation trips in USA and staying on a small budget can still be a lot of fun.

graduation trip ideas 1 Young adults who want to get away from their everyday lives for a few days will enjoy exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Located on the big island of Hawaii, this popular park offers hiking trails, sightseeing, lava tubes, and much more. Backpacking is allowed at certain sites within park limits. A trip to Kilauea Iki can take visitors through many of these features in one hike, making it one of our favorite graduation trip ideas for young adults.

1. New York City

I fully believe New York City not only is the ultimate travel experience today, but it is also well within a budget vacation option. It’s been one of our best graduation trips.

Flights to NYC are usually not too expensive, but they do increase as summer approaches. Book a trip immediately after graduation in late May if possible. Keep an eye on Skyscanner for the best flight prices.

What to do:

Places such as Times Square, Central Park, Statue of Liberty , Wall Street, Trinity Church (where the Hamiltons are buried and as seen on National Treasure), The New York Public Library, and Washington Square Park, are free to visit. Or in the case of the Lady Liberty, very reasonable cost.

These are places that your teen will know from TV and Movies. We have always had a great time seeing our favorite places in person. Hit Bedford and Grove to see the Friends building. Wander through Central Park. Search for filming locations of your favorite media and you’ll come up with a list to visit on your own.

Eating in the big city of New York can also be reasonable as well. Just stay away from the touristy section of Times Square when it comes to dining. Your best option is downtown for Chinatown or Little Italy.

Where to stay:

To make it reasonable, stay outside the city and take the subway in. We’ve found charming VRBOs in Jersey City (which isn’t too far from the Statue of Liberty Ferry and is only about 4 stops into the city.

Camping is another excellent choice for traveling on a budget . Your choice of destination is unlimited. If your grad wants to even try out a solo trip, look to one of the state parks near you. That way your teen gets some independence but isn’t too far away for their first time out on their own.

If you don’t want to go all-in on buying new camping gear , you can also consider one of your state parks with cabin accommodations.

3. Rent a Campervan

When my son and I started tossing around ideas for high school senior trip ideas, the one we landed on was renting a campervan to explore the National Parks in California .

We are renting with Escape Campervans , out of San Francisco. Drivers do have to be at least 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license, so this is not the kind of trip a high school senior could do. However, we found it’s an amazing way to see a lot at a lower cost. Our van rental costs about $300 more than a car rental for the same time period and includes our sleeping and cooking facilities. The only other things we are paying for are food (which we would have to do anyway) and campsites.

Escape Campervans have locations in:

  • Los Angeles
  • Salt Lake City
  • San Francisco

You can rent round trip or between any of those destinations.

4. South Dakota

At first glance, South Dakota’s Badlands National Park and the Black Hills aren’t necessarily places that jump to mind for a graduation trip , but their rugged and untouched beauty will leave your senior in awe.

While most national parks require at least a few miles of hiking to reach their greatest points of interest, Badlands National Park gives you stunning views almost immediately—like Door Trail or Badlands Loop Road.

Feel as if you’re in an Epic Star Wars or Star Trek adventure with some of the landscapes as well. Notch Trail winds through canyon shelves and ends in dramatic views that will definitely give you the feeling of being on another planet.

Ideas for Graduation trips with Family

If your senior is moving away to college in the fall, this may be the last time you get to take whole family vacations for a while. With college breaks not always lining up with younger kids’ school holidays, it’s the perfect time to do one last big hurrah with the whole gang.

Plus these trips make for amazing travel photos .

Why visiting Walt Disney World is better with older children.

5. Walt Disney World

If you haven’t done Disney as a whole family, this may be the time to do it. Not only is Disney better with older kids , in my opinion, it’s the perfect place to celebrate. With so much more attractions geared towards older kids such as Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy, Disney as one of your high school graduation vacation ideas is a fun for the whole family idea.

Walt Disney World is the kind of place where you can spend a few days or a few weeks and still have plenty to do. Don’t sweat trying to do it all, it’s nearly impossible. Pick a few of your must-dos, and enjoy the time together.

I would recommend staying on property in order to use Disney transportation.

Otherwise, consider getting a vacation home with a pool where you can have a day to chill poolside, yet still have all the things you need to snack and feed your hungry family.

Of course, if you’re in the Orlando area and are more thrill seeker fans, you can combine Disney with a trip to Universal. Grab my what not to miss at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter .

If you’re looking for ideas for a graduation trip that gives your senior a chance to bond with his family, then book a cruise .

You and your loved ones can enjoy sailing together while you soak up some Vitamin D on deck. Cruise ships also offer a variety of activities and events like spa treatments, scavenger hunts, dancing, and more—so everyone can find something they enjoy.

Alaska National Parks Road Trip

7. Alaskan Cruise or Alaska Road Trip

No matter what time of year, there’s never a bad time to visit Alaska—the northernmost U.S. state.

Although it can be expensive to fly, you’ll be able to experience wildlife, pristine landscapes, and exciting Alaskan festivities. This makes it one of the best places for a senior trip.

If you go during winter, you’ll get to see spectacular views of snow-covered mountains and frozen lakes that are sure to make your senior feel warm inside (no pun intended). Not to mention, this is a fantastic way to see the Northern Lights without leaving the country.

Consider either an Alaskan cruise as a bucket list to see incredible glaciers, or explore further inland with a road trip through the National Parks in Alaska.

Alaska was a bucket list item for us and an incredible way to view vistas we don’t see every day. Plus, your teen may be interested in summer employment in Alaska in the future. We met many college kids spending their summers in the Last Frontier.

8. All-Inclusive Graduation Trips

Like a cruise but on land, an all-inclusive resort is a fantastic way to make sure you’re taken care of during your vacation. Instead of paying for each individual part of your trip separately, you pay for it all in one fell swoop.

One of my favorite high school graduation family trip ideas, all-inclusive let you bond, do activities together or on your own, and generally just relax.

And, with options like room service and on-site dining, you can focus on spending time with your family instead of having to go out into town or eat in your hotel room. This can range from luxury Club Med destinations to horseback riding dude ranches.

Some top choices in the US include:

  • Tyler Place Family Resort – Vermont
  • Bungalows Key Largo – Florida Keys
  • Fair Hills Resort – Minnesota

I would recommend one of the many charming VRBO rentals near the National Park for perfect family seclusion.

group of young people with backpacks walking towards campsites.

Group Graduation Vacation Ideas with Friends

If you’re willing to send your teen off with a group of friends, now’s the perfect time to learn some independence and responsibility. Of course, you may want to read my tips for a graduate here . These ideas for the best senior trips with friends are full of adventure.

10. Road Trips

Who doesn’t love a road trip ? With some careful planning, you can create an unforgettable experience that will be one of your teen’s favorite memories from high school. Whether it’s going to visit colleges or seeing national landmarks, there are so many great graduation trip ideas for teens.

For ideas, look to the miles and miles of ideas in Road Trip USA by Moon guides . Perhaps they want to re-enact the Oregon Trail?

graduation trip ideas 4 Young adults who want to get away from their everyday lives for a few days will enjoy exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. A trip to Kilauea Iki can take visitors through many of these features in one hike, making it one of our favorite graduation trip ideas for young adults.

11. National Park Hiking

Take a hike. The nation’s outdoor spaces are vast and beautiful, and they’re within easy reach of most towns. National parks are the best places for a senior trip.

Get your teen a National Parks Pass that they can use all year long and save on entrance fees.

Just because your teen graduated doesn’t mean he or she has to sit inside studying all summer! A hike is a perfect way to get some fresh air and test his or her new sense of responsibility. For bucket list destinations try Yosemite National Park or Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Rafting down the Colorado River

12. White Water Rafting Grand Canyon

The Colorado River is one of America’s greatest rivers and it has a history steeped in both adventure and danger. Paddle through parts of the Grand Canyon.

They’ll get to see up close stunning views, and spend some quality time with their friends.

Plus you don’t need any previous experience to participate— professional guides will take care of all that for you! For a guided tour, search here .

13. South Padre Island

Is a beach destination worth considering if your grads want to head to an island? The island is located on South Padre Island along Texas’s Gulf Coast and offers tons of things to do including surfing, swimming, and fishing. These activities are perfect for spending time with their friends while giving them an adventure they won’t forget. There are also plenty of hotels to choose from that offer packages geared toward students, making it easy to plan a fun trip!

14. Music Festivals

For an experience that will bring your teen and her friends closer together, send her off to a music festival. Plus, it’s a great way to stay connected with your child in an age when texting and Snapchat takes precedence over phone calls and weekend visits. And because most music festivals take place at different times of the year, there’s sure to be one she’ll love no matter what time of year it is.

Graduation Trip Ideas include beaches with palm trees and people in the shade.

Beach Destinations

If a tropical destination is what your grad has in mind, you don’t need to leave the country. Either the island nation of Puerto Rico or the southernmost spot of Key West are great ideas for a graduation trip.

graduation trip ideas 5 Young adults who want to get away from their everyday lives for a few days will enjoy exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. 15. Puerto Rico

No passport is required to get to Puerto Rico. Because it’s a US Territory, you can travel here as you would within the United States. College students can take advantage of cheap flights and warm weather. A four day itinerary in Puerto Rico will hit some of the island’s best spots.

San Juan is home to several historic sites worth exploring. The city also has tons of restaurants that serve up authentic Latin American cuisine.

The island also has plenty of beaches and places to go surfing. You could even do a natural waterslide and rainforest hike .

16. Key West

The southernmost city in Florida, Key West is known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and eclectic nightlife. There’s no shortage of fun here; a visit to Mallory Square and Duval Street will provide you with everything from street performers to food vendors and lounges – just be prepared to see some serious sunburns if you plan on spending your time on the beach.

We’re back in Hawaii, this time to Maui for surf’s up. For a graduation trip you’ll never forget, Maui is one of our top picks. With its warm weather, beautiful beaches, and year-round sunsets, it’s one of Hawaii’s most popular destinations. There are plenty of things to do on your trip here including visiting historic sites like Pearl Harbor and snorkeling in Makena. There are also opportunities for surfing, hiking, and exploring rainforests.

For those who want to hit some waves while they’re in town, you can choose from several options when it comes to surfing lessons . At Kahului Beach Park (the birthplace of modern surfing), there are instructors available that will teach you how to ride surfboards as well as stand-up paddleboards.

**2024 Note** Maui, due to the fires, may not be ready to welcome visitors yet. Be sure to inquire with locals before booking your trip to ensure you’re not doing more harm than good by traveling there.

18. Tybee Island and Savannah

If you’re looking for remote beaches mixed with old world Southern charm, Tybee Island and Savannah are my choice for your graduation trip with your teens.

First, let’s talk about the beaches of Tybee Island. this is a true hidden gem along the Georgia coastline that offers pristine beaches, sandy shores, and fresh seafood.

Take a leisurely bike ride along the picturesque streets or embark on a kayaking excursion to discover the islands natural beauty.

Savannah, in addition to it’s ornate antebellum architecture, is home to the Savannah College of Art and Design. If your teen is into art, fashion, or film, this school has woven its creative influence throughout the charming city. See a mural in a local business, it’s likely a SCAD student may have worked on it.

Check out the SCAD fashion or film festival put on each year by the school and combine your kids love into a trip they’ll never forget.

Bright Lights Big Cities

If you have culture or movie buffs as kids, some of the bigger cities might be just what they want to experience. We’ve already mentioned what a great place New York City is on a budget. If you’re willing to splurge, look to add an On Location Movie Tour . They have TV & Movie Sites , Marvel , and more. Check out the NYC and Boston Tours here.

19. Chicago

I’ve always thought Chicago is a fantastic big city that feels like a small town. It’s midwest charm, history, and architecture offer plenty to see and do.

A trip to Chicago is a must for any comedy fan. Second City, one of comedy’s most famous institutions, is located just north of the Chicago River. Their interactive improv courses are also an awesome way to get your grad laughing. After class, you can grab dinner at any of the many restaurants that surround it—from Korean fried chicken to BBQ pizza and artisan cheeses.

And while you’re in Chicago, baseball fans will love checking out Wrigley Field.

And don’t miss such Chicago food staples as Lou Malnati’s Deep Dish Pizza, and a Chicago-style dog from Portillos.

20. Los Angeles

No matter what you’re into, Los Angeles has it. The entertainment capital of America, LA is a great choice for your grad trip. Be sure to visit Rodeo Drive, Hollywood, and Malibu (the movie stars’ playground). You might even spot a celebrity or two!

One of LA’s top attractions is Universal Studios . It has rides, shows, and a lot more fun to offer. If your grad likes Harry Potter, this is the place to try all kinds of butterbeer . Everyone will be amazed by what they see there. Also, try to attend an NBA game at Staples Center.

21. San Diego

What teen doesn’t dream of an amazing trip to Comic-Con? In San Diego, your soon-to-be grad can bask in geek culture and look forward to a new adventure that his friends will envy—and remember. Make sure you take pictures of him with as many superheroes as possible for bragging rights. If there’s one thing we learned from The Hobbit, it’s that everyone loves Legolas!

graduation trip ideas 6 Young adults who want to get away from their everyday lives for a few days will enjoy exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

22. New Orleans

I love New Orleans. Beyond Bourbon Street, there’s a lot for teens to do in New Orleans .

The birthplace of jazz, this city will give you and your teen a new appreciation for the cultural rich music on dozens of street corners in the French Quarter.

Then there’s the food. If you have a teen that loves to eat, they can explore their likes and dislikes with New Orleans staples such as beignets, gumbo, crawfish, po’boys, muffalettas, and jambalaya, just to name a few.

You can also get an authentic Mardi Gras experience, without the chaos that is Bourbon street the day of. Mardi Gras officially begins on January 6th (Three Kings Day) and there are events from January until Mardi Gras day throughout the city.

I’d recommend staying in the Warehouse District for ease of access to the best spots in the city.

Graduation Trip Ideas

23. Seattle

My daughter’s choice for her graduation trip is Seattle, Washington. She’s a music fan and coffee lover, as well as enjoying nature. This gateway to the Pacific Northwest makes it a perfect destination.

While in Seattle, explore the Pike Place Market , the Museum of Pop Culture, and a trip to the top of the Space Needle.

While many people know that Starbucks arose from Seattle, the Emerald City was some to quite the coffee culture long before Starbucks became a household name. Get your teen ready for late night studying with the Seattle Coffee Culture Tour .

And of course, if you’re like me, and grew up on 90s grunge, visiting the birthplace of your favorite artists with your teen is an incredible shared experience.

Outside the main city, visit Olympic National Park , a vast park of nearly a million acres with several distinct ecosystems, including a rainforest.

If you have a little extra time, about 3 hours from Seattle is North Cascades National Park.

24. Portland

Portland, Oregon is known for its weirdness. In fact, it’s their slogan, Keep Portland Weird.

Portland is filled with quirky neighborhoods, artisanal spirit, and a thriving food scene. The city has a vibe like no other.

Additionally, Portland is committed to sustainability and green energy. Be on the lookout for how they are keeping to “green” practices that connect it to the nature around it.

Favorites in Portland include Powell’s City of Books, one of the world’s largest independent bookstores, the Japanese gardens, and nearby drives to dozens of waterfalls.

Spring Break in Puerto Rico and Home

I’d first like to start by saying that it feels good to be tan again. I have this saying that I thrive best in the type of climate that my ancestors adapted to (sunny, warm, humid) and the American East Coast was not doing me or my skin any good. When I was planning my spring break, I knew that I wanted to be somewhere warm and on a beach. Puerto Rico was the best option for me and my friends.

We left Friday night and arrived in San Juan in the early hours of Saturday. Our Airbnb was in Old San Juan (OSJ), so a majorityofthe tourist attractions were within walking distance of our apartment. On our first day, we immediately beached. The next day, we walked around OSJ and explored the small city. I even got to go on an early morning run by the water, where I bumped into an ongoing 5K race. It was really fun cheering for the locals and running alongside them. OSJ was home to many, many stray cats and I wished I pet one of them.

On Monday, we ventured out to El Yunque Rainforest, where we did a guided “off the beaten path” tour. We got really muddy and my friend’s sandals actually broke. However, it was overall a fun experience after we swam in the cool freshwater and jumped off cliffs.

We spent the remainder of our trip in Rincon, which is on the west coast of Puerto Rico. It had many lovely beaches and my friends and I mainly tanned and swam all day (except I can’t swim, so I waded). We spent our nights in our Airbnb watching Love is Blind and had a relaxing vacation.

After Rincon, we drove back to San Juan and flew out to New York.

This was my first time being back at home with my college friends. I was excited to go out and show them around the city, but alas our return to the East Coast was not well received and it rained all day. So, I pivoted and brought one of my friends to the MET and introduced her to all my lore around Chinatown. I returned to Boston the following day. I wish I had longer in New York, but distance makes the heart grow fonder is what I’ll tell myself.
