Unlike the Universal Studios tour, guests here aren't herded aboard monster trams by the thousands, and driven through theme park rides.

At Warner Bros, the VIP tours are far more personal, limited to small groups of twelve people. And the studio back lot that you see is the real thing.

warner brother vip tour

Where Universal processes millions of tourists each year, only about 120 people a day discover the Warner Bros tour.

You and your tour guide ramble about in a small tram resembling a golf cart; you are allowed to stop and get out of the tram to inspect many of the sets up-close, and your guide is always nearby to answer any questions you might have.

The tour is much more extensive and authentic than the superficial, indoor tour at NBC Studios . And although the WB tours last two full hours, you don't have to spend all of that time on your feet, as you do during the Paramount Studio walking tour. The Warner's back lot is also a lot more colorful than the Paramount property.

The drawback, however, is the cost. Warner Bros. charges $49 each for this special VIP tour (which is more a few dollars more than the competing studio tours), in addition to a parking fee. But it's worth it.

When Warner Bros. says "V.I.P.," they're not kidding. This tour originally began as a way to show some Very Important People around the studio back lot. When you run a Hollywood movie studio, you never know who is going to drop by. In October of 1954, Queen Elizabeth paid a backstage visit to Warner's and the toured the set of their movie, " The Pajama Game ." Then there were the visiting politicians and corporate sponsors who expected to be shown around the studio when they came to Hollywood. Eventually, Warner's decided to expand the VIP tour to include members of the public as well.

The tour begins at a small visitors center where you check in and get your tickets - you can spend you're waiting time checking out a handful of exhibits on display, such as the troll from the first " Harry Potter " movie, and props from TV shows such as " Smallville " and " ER ".

Then you hop aboard the small carts, and ride to the new Warner Bros. Museum , which houses a treasure trove of movie memorabilia. At last word, the upper level was devoted to the first two " Harry Potter " movies, WB's most popular movie franchise. Visitors tell me, however, that they don't give you enough time to spend in the museum as you might like - only about 15 minutes.

Then it's out to the carts again, to settle back for the tour. These trams seat only two across, so everyone has a good view as you roll through the vast 110 acre lot.

warner brother vip tour

Remember the line from the classic " Casablanca ," where Humphrey Bogart tells Ingrid Bergman , " We'll always have Paris " ?  Well, those Paris flashback scenes from " Casablanca " were shot on a mock "French Street" here on the Warner Bros' back lot, a set which is still in use today. You'll see it on the tour.

warner brother vip tour

If you've ever seen " The Music Man " (with Robert Preston ), you'll remember the classic song "Trouble"

You've got trouble, folks! Right here in River City! Trouble with a capital T, and that rhymes with P, and that stands for pool! ( You can watch the scene here! )

That famous scene was shot on Midwest Street , the largest permanent set on the Warner's back lot, a town square that was originally built in 1943 for " Saratoga Trunk " (starring Gary Cooper ). The quaint white church in this town square was also used in " The Waltons ." Other movies shot here include " Damn Yankees ," " The Pajama Game , " " Bonnie and Clyde " & " Gremlins ".

Part of Midwest Street is a residential avenue of period Victorian houses, built for Ronald Reagan 's best movie: " Kings Row ," but used for many other films and TV shows. Here, you'll recognize the Seaver house from " Growing Pains " (with Alan Thicke & Kirk Cameron ), as well Marion the Librarian's ( Shirley Jones ) home and the mayor's house from " The Music Man ." They also filmed the TV series " Gilmore Girls " there.

warner brother vip tour

In between, you'll see the gas station from " The Dukes of Hazzard ," the lake where they docked the boats each week in " Fantasy Island ," and the School for the Blind which 'Mary Ingals' attended in " Little House on the Prairie ."

You also learn a lot about movie-making during your tour.

You'll see trees and boulders on wheels, so they can be moved about easily... You'll discover how a single street can be used for both modern and period pictures. You'll learn that they created a jungle and waterfall inside a huge sound stage here for " Jurassic Park ," and find out that Audrey Hepburn was told about the JFK assassination on a set here, while she was making " My Fair Lady ." And you'll learn that actors such as Kevin Costner , Mel Gibson , and Steven Seagal have offices here at Warner's.

warner brother vip tour

Visitors don't spend all of their time on the tram, either. The trams stops and they let you get off to explore at various points along the way. That used to nclude a stop at a Western town set (called Laramie Street ), where they shot series like " Little House on the Prairie ", " Cheyenne " and " F-Troop ," and where you could snoop inside the old saloon and other mock buildings, walking the same dusty streets trod by stars such as John Wayne , Gary Cooper , Randolph Scott ...

Alas, in 2004, Warner Bros tore down the Laramie Street set. Apparently, it wasn't being used much, since not many Westerns have been made in recent years. It has been replaced with a new set called " Warner Village ", which consists of exterior facades for 11 two-story homes, forming a faux, upscale residential neighborhood they can use in future films. Hidden behind the home exteriors, though, is 40,000 square feet of studio office space. So the new development serves a dual purpose. The upstairs offices have rear entrances and aren't visible from the front of the houses, so producers can film on one side and writers can do their business on the other. According to the Hollywood Reporter, they have already shot a few productions there, including " Ocean's Twelve ," and TV's " Joey ," " Cold Case ," " Gilmore Girls " and " Commando Nanny ."

After your tour of the back lot sets, the tour next moves into the "front lot," a busy area crowded with dozens of giant sound stages, offices, and post-production buildings. They'll confiscate your cameras at this point of the tour, and lock them away (don't worry, you'll get them back at the end of the tour).

The tour makes several stops in the front lot. You may go into "The Mill", a studio factory that actually builds the numerous props needed for the movies - everything from furniture to giant Oscar statues. Here's you may see the giant clock used in " The John Larroquette Show ," a life mask of Michael Keaton (from " Batman "), a mock gun from " Lethal Weapon ," or an exact replica of a Presidential "soap on a rope" from the movie " Dave ."

The room is filled with plaster of paris molds and statues; hanging from the ceiling are large scale models of airplanes used in filming " Memphis Belle " and Mel Gibson 's " Forever Young ."

You may also go inside a prop warehouse, where a veritable junk yard of assorted items are stored, from garage sale knick knacks to a genuine set of Presidential china (purchased at a hefty price from the Bush Administration, for the movie " Dave "). Other stops might include athe costume department or the foley room (where they make sounds to go with the movies). It varies from tour to tour, depending upon what is available at the time.

The little tram will take you through a huge industrial factory building where they do welding for the studio. They have also used this location to shoot scenes from such series as " Lois & Clark " and " Life Goes On ." And if you remember the scene from " Dave ," where he extends giant mechanical arms and says "I caught a fish this big! "... well, they shot that scene here too.

You'll be allowed to go inside one of the giant sound stages, and see the set from a TV show. Once, we visited Stage 6, a closed set where they filmed " Lois & Clark: the New Adventures of Superman ," and saw the suite used by the villainous Lex Luthor. They really let you get up-close on this tour. We were even allowed to knock on the fake walls and peek inside the windows of adjoining sets. (Now that " Lois & Clark " is gone, other sets you might visit on your tour include the sets for " ER ", " Drew Carrey ", " Gilmore Girls " " Everybody Loves Raymond " or " Friends .") Sometimes it will be a movie set instead. One 2003 visitor tells me they were taken to the set of the movie " What I Like About You ".

You have a chance of seeing a star in the flesh along the way. Readers who have taken the tour have reported seeing George Clooney , Steven Soderbergh , Rob Lowe and Alexis Bledel ('Rory' from " Gilmore Girls "). Another reader, from Switzerland, writes to say that during a 2000 tour, he spotted director Steven Spielberg outside a sound stage where he was filming "A.I." But don't count on it - it remains a bit of a longshot.

Inside the high-tech post-production labs, you'll be shown the "additional dialogue" areas where actors re-do spoken lines after the film has been shot, and you'll visit the room where an orchestra adds the musical scores while watching the film on a huge overhead screen. (If you come at the right time, you'll actually be able to watch and listen as the orchestra records the musical soundtrack for a film.)

Warner Bros. tries to include some filming whenever possible, and if you're lucky, you may get the chance to see a star rehearsing his or her scenes. Exactly how much action you encounter, however, is more or less the luck of the draw, and depends upon when you happen to arrive. Mid-April, for instance, is one of the worst times of the year to see shooting at the studio - almost all of the shows are "in hiatus" (a sort of summer vacation), and action at the studio is minimal then. And now there's a major bonus for tour-takers - the final stop on the tour.

In 1996, the studio opened the brand new Warner Bros Museum , filled with classic Hollywood memorabilia from the studio's glory days. Among other items, you can see Sam's piano from " Casablanca " and the original Maltese Falcon . But the museum is open only to those who take the VIP Tour.

The tour itself lasts exactly two hours. It's recommended that you buy your tickets in advance, online, at their website .

No one under age 10 is admitted on the tour. Dress casually, and wear comfortable shoes. You can bring a (still) camera, but you can only use it on the back lot - not during the other half of the tour. Parking : $5. Do not enter the studio gates - follow the directional signs to Parking Lot N (Gate 6). The lot is right around the corner from the main gate, on S. Avon Street.

Admission Price : Tour of studio costs $49 per person, regardless of age (minimum age is 10). Tickets are available online. All adults must present current government issued photo identification upon registration and persons under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

(A special five-hour deluxe tour is offered once each morning, and costs $250. It tends to sell out a month in advance, so reservations are a must.)

Hours : Tours are given all day, Monday through Friday from 8:20 AM to 4 PM (longer during the peak Summer & Spring tourist seasons. There are limited tours on Saturday, and none on Sunday. The Saturday tours usually sell out in advance, so advance reservations are strongly recommended, and tickets are available online . Reservations are only accepted for the first three tours of the day. (Their schedule is subject to change - phone first to be sure of hours. (818) 972-TOUR.)  The Deluxe tours depart at 10:20 AM.

From Universal Studios , take Lankershim Boulevard half a mile north to Riverside Drive. Turn right (east), and take Riverside Drive east (about a mile and a half) to Hollywood Way. Turn right again (south), and take Hollywood Way to the studio gate. Follow the signs to the parking lot. / From the Ventura (134) Freeway east , take the Pass Avenue offramp. Turn right on Pass Avenue and follow it southeast for about one half mile, to where it intersects with Olive Street at the Studio. Look for the giant movie posters - you can't miss it.

New Warner Bros. Studio Tour 2024

By: Author Sarah Auerswald

Posted on Last updated: February 23, 2024

Updated for 2024

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood is a wonderful chance to peek behind the curtain and see how movies and TV shows are made, and visiting the Warner Bros. lot means you’ll get a big dose of Hollywood history while you’re at it.

The tour was totally redesigned in 2021, having been completely upgraded with never-before-seen experiences and interactive exhibits sure to delight fans of Warner Bros. movies and TV shows. And for the first time, the tour is welcoming kids ages 5 and up.

From the new Welcome Center and expanded Studio Store, you’ll get to experience the new Storytelling Showcase, a new Action and Magic interactive exhibit featuring the DC superheroes and characters from the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts series, an expanded Central Perk Café and Friends Boutique, and quite a bit more as a guest on the Studio Tour.

Characters from Harry Potter and the Fantastic Beasts movies greet you as you enter the new Action and Magic section of the Warner Bros. Studio Tour

What’s New on the Warner Bros. Studio Tour

The first new thing you’ll experience on the Warner Bros. Studio Tour is the Welcome Center. This is where you’ll check in for your tour and where you can shop at the expanded Studio Store as well. Note that the store is open to the public even if you’re not taking the tour. It’s filled with merchandise from both classic and contemporary Warner Bros. movies, as well as their beloved TV series.

There’s a Starbucks in the Welcome Center, just in case you need some coffee, and you’ll be greeted by an impressive oversize sculpture from the Triwizard Tournament (from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ), and both Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny (in bronze statue form).

Storytelling showcase.

This experience is where you’ll learn about the history of Warner Bros., from its origins in 1923 through its nearly 100-year journey making the entertainment we’ve all enjoyed. You’ll see a sampling of the studio’s film, TV and animation titles, as well as some of the technological innovations. Take a selfie with a replica of the iconic WB water tower, see mini versions of the famous Sound Stages, and walk on an aerial view of the sprawling studio lot printed on the floor.

Janice (Maggie Wheeler) from Friends stopped by and sat on the Central Perk couch in the new Friends Boutique

Central Perk Café and Friends Boutique

Friends fans may never want to leave this sprawling re-creation of their favorite show’s sets. Sit on the famous couch at Central Perk, lounge in Joey and Chandler’s recliners and watch clips from the show, or hang out in Monica and Rachel’s apartment. And you can do all of this while enjoying delicious food from the Central Perk Café next door. Before you leave, you’ll want to shop at the Friends boutique, which has some fan merchandise found nowhere else.

Stage 48: Script to Screen Experience

Have you ever wondered about how on-screen magic is made? You’ll get a taste of what’s involved when you check out the Script to Screen section, which includes a special Post-Production interactive area. Learn about Foley Artists, Sound Mixers, Film Editors, and ADR Mixers. ADR, which stands for Automated Dialogue Replacement, is the process of replacing the actor’s voice that was recorded during production with a new version.

Sometimes when crews are filming, there’s extraneous noise that makes an actor’s dialogue unusable, or sometimes a new line is written and needs to be recorded. Whatever the reason, the way new dialogue is recorded and added to the film is something you can try for yourself. Stand in the booth, choose a scene, and you’ll get to record your voice coming out of a movie star’s mouth!

Action and Magic Made Here

Whether you’re a fan of the DC superheroes , the Harry Potter series , cool costumes and movie sets, or if you just like to be delighted, the Action and Magic Made Here experience is going to be your favorite part of the tour.

Wonder Woman fans get the treat of posing with her wings from WW84 , or from squeezing her lasso for a special surprise. They also get to see many costumes from the Wonder Woman movies, and even the classic Lynda Carter TV series look.

Not to be outdone, Aquaman, Superman, Batman, and Shazam are well represented for their fans (and fans of their villains), and you’ll find costumes, props, and vehicles from their movies, as well as larger than life posters and sculptures.

Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts

We predict Harry Potter fans are going to love this section of the tour. There are several interactive experiences they can choose to try, like taking a lesson in wand choreography, sitting on Harry’s bed under the stairs, mixing a few potions in Professor Snape’s classroom, or possibly the best one: letting the Sorting Hat choose which house you belong to at Hogwarts.

There are other great photo opportunities and interactives just within the Harry Potter section, and as a bonus, if you download the free Harry Potter Fan Club App, keep an eye out for the Enchanted Keys placed throughout the exhibit, and scan them when you see them, you’ll unlock hidden surprises.

More About the Studio Tour

The Studio Tour has a one hour Guided portion, and about two hours of unguided, self-directed time in total. The Guided portion of the tour is spent largely on the Tour Carts, riding throughout the studio lot with a tour guide to explain and answer questions. The rest of the tour is made up of time you’ll spend dining, shopping and exploring the interactive experiences. You’ll be able to complete this on your own time, and it may take you less than two hours.

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour is available in English and Spanish.

Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny statues welcome you to the new Warner Bros Studio Tour

The Warner Bros. Deluxe VIP Tour

Note that the Deluxe VIP tour has not resumed in 2021. Stay tuned for updates. What follows is based on the tour as it was in 2012.

The VIP Deluxe Tour begins with a movie overview of some of the classic films and TV shows that were filmed on the lot, and it makes for quite an impressive resume. Beginning with The Jazz Singer in 1927, and continuing with films like The Maltese Falcon , A Streetcar Named Desire , The Music Man , What’s Up Doc , The Matrix Trilogy and all the versions of Ocean’s Eleven , Warner Bros. has been responsible for many great films – too many to name here.

Plus, dozens and dozens of our favorite TV Shows come from Warner Bros., like ER , Friends , Pretty Little Liars , Ellen , The West Wing ,  The Drew Carey Show , and so many more. You’ll see clips of many of them in the presentation – and immediately wish you had them all in your Netflix queue.

Academy Awards for Everyone!

On your tour, you’ll get to do something only members of the Motion Picture Academy usually get to do: hold an Oscar ! It’s surprisingly heavy, just like all the actresses say when they win – and it’s like a little dream come true when you get your photo taken. At least it was for me .

After that, your tour guide greets you and your group and leads you out to your “private” golf cart which will ferry you around the 10-acre lot for the 5-hour Tour. Photography is permitted in most places on the lot, however, some spots are off-limits and your tour guide will keep you informed.

Celebrity sightings are not uncommon on tours during the week (but rare on the weekends), and of course these can be a highlight of the experience, but since this is where the actors are at work, tour attendees are encouraged not to yell or accost the stars they may see. Photos with celebrities are not unheard of, though, especially if the rules are followed, so keep your eyes peeled and your fingers crossed.

The tour takes you through the backlot, which has doubled for every major city in the world over the years, and the “jungle”, which plays home to the exterior scenes of Pretty Little Liars and True Blood currently, but many others over the years as well.

ER was a major player on the Warner Bros. lot for the 15 years of its run, and so there are many spots on the tour that turn out to have been filmed as part of the show.

Danny Ocean rap sheet from Ocean's Eleven George Clooney

Related: Best Live Audiences to be part of in Los Angeles

The Tour Guides are all extremely knowledgeable about the history of the lot and about all the shows that are currently filming there. Each one brings their personality to the job – one they clearly relish. They really make the Tour special and worth every penny.

The tour continues with visits to the Prop department, where you’ll see replicas of the Maltese Falcon, the Wardrobe department where they construct the specialty costumes, and the Transportation and Picture Car department with cars on display like the Scooby Doo van, the Batmobile and the flying car from Harry Potter .

Plus there’s a special Green Screen photo opportunity there as well, where you can pretend you’re waiting for the Hogwarts Express, and there’s a fun stop at the preserved set of Central Perk from Friends .

Central Perk set from

There’s a visit to the sound department to see how special sound effects are made, some still “by hand”, even in this digital age.

Of course there are set visits, although not to those where there’s a crew actually working. Still, it’s amazing to see the rooms up close that you’ve only seen on TV or on the big screen. The attention to detail is fascinating.

One of the highlights of every tour is visiting the Warner Bros. Studio Museum . Some of the most famous costumes and props from their most popular movies and TV shows are on display. On any given day, you might see Ingrid Bergman’s suit from Casablanca or Voldemort’s cape from Harry Potter . Oh and for the serious Harry Potter fans: you can sit under the Sorting Hat and find out which house you belong to!

And did I mention lunch? Lunch at the Warner Bros. Commissary is included with the price of the tour. The setting is elegant and the food is terrific.

All in all, the Warner Bros. VIP Deluxe Tour is a wonderful way to spend the day.

Do the Deluxe! Very worth it!

WARNER BROTHERS DELUXE TOUR Overall: B Pre-tour waiting: B Tour Guide: A+ (Thom) Tour: B Lunch: A After Tour: B Worth the Expense: Yes This is one of 4 VIP/deluxe tours we took during our 1 week stay in the Los Angeles area (+ we will review the Sheraton Universal Hotel). The trips were: Universal Studios Hollywood Horror Nights RIP Experience Universal Studios Hollywood VIP Tour Paramount Studios VIP Tour Warner Brothers Studio Deluxe Tour (this tour) Please look for our review of each. We will rate each aspect of the tour A-F like in USA schools and add a "worth the extra expense (Y/N)" The Pre-tour waiting area for Deluxe (and Plus) is very nice. They had really great pastries and chips, popcorn and the like. They had regular coffee (we drink decaf so were out of luck and part of why this gets a B). After a little time to nosh and sip we were led to a screening room type facility where there was a nice "history of WB" hosted by Ellen Degeneris (guide told us they have a new one with a current host to be used soon). Thom, our tour guide, has been doing this for 15 years and his knowledge and passion reflect this. His understanding of the studio and the many films and TV shows it has produced is encyclopedic. He was also both witty and pleasant. Unquestionably the best guide we had on all our tours and the made the day great. The tour spent a good bit of time on the back lot to begin with where we got to get out and walk around to see sets of different types (facades, working sets, etc.) and go to places we had seen in famous movies (deluxe tours get out and walk around). For those who like "Friends" they have the original fountain and a reproduction of the couch for a photo-op. We also got to walk through the costume department where they have literally thousands of costumes of every size from every ere and every genre imaginable - from the 1400s to the future. Lunch was amazing - we went to the real fine dining commissary where stars and execs go to eat and do deals, etc. We did not see any stars this trip (but last time 4 years ago we saw Mayim Bialik and a group of suits so yes they really do come here). You order from a special menu and the options are pretty good. We had baked salmon and Kobe beef burger, respectively. After lunch we went inside of a working set (new show called "All American") and go to see how they laid everything out and some of the interesting set decorating decisions they made for filming (masks required but that was it). We then went to the prop department and got to see all the thousands of props they have available and there are some pretty cool ones as well as just an amazing array of them. After the tour ends everybody (all tour types) end up at Studio 48 which is a chance to do some interactive exhibits, including pics on the Big Bang Theory living room (Sheldon's place") some green screen action recording of you in a harry Potter movie on a fast-moving broom. The last part of the day is a static exhibit with several of the Batmobiles, a number of the DC costumes (Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman) and some fun interactive Wizarding World exhibits adults and kids can both enjoy. We did the Studio 48 and harry Potter stuff last year and they were very fun and we encourage people to take advantage of them. We skipped them this year as they really are one-and-done. Overall a very enjoyable day and worth the time and money.

warner brother vip tour

Enjoyed seeing items on the timeless old classics of Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz, and Snow White. Not many movies are made in USA any more because of the expense. Costumes from super heroes like Batman and others, plus the Batmobile, etc. on on view. This is a great way to learn how what you see on TV is created. Interesting tour of the back lot and the sets for "Friends" and "Big Bang Theory." Unfortunately, all of the sound stages were in use, so they could not be entered. You are also exposed to the enormous work needed to prepare for production, particularly seasonal shots. For example, if it's a Fall outdoor scene, the leaves on the trees may have to be changed by hand! The facade on a building is changed for multiple uses, from a temple to a courthouse. There's quite a lot on Harry Potter, with several places where you can interact, like getting assigned to your Hogwarts house or casting a spell. Parking convenient and staff were knowledgeable and very helpful. A very enjoyable experience.

Best time ever. This was a dream come true especially for a Friends freak like me. The tour and stages were worthwhile.

Great tour guide, sets, and exhibits. I liked it a lot more than the Paramount tour. Both were good but Warner bros has more exhibits and the tour guides seemed more knowledgeable.

A must. We weren’t sure we were going to do the tour since we had already booked Universal months earlier. Booked WBS last Minute and are thankful we did. A fun and informative experience. Great tour guide, Alyssa. Did feel that the tour was a bit rushed.

News | Representation in Hollywood improves, but still not enough, UCLA report finds

warner brother vip tour

Change in Hollywood can sometimes feel like going one step forward, or several steps back.

A new Hollywood Diversity report from UCLA illustrates growing representation overall for more people of color in the industry, both behind and in front of the cameras, and that audiences largely support diverse films. Still, researchers say, there is a lot more work to be done — and it’s not certain this growing representation will last.

The study from UCLA’s Entertainment and Media Research Initiative was released days before the 96th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 10. This year’s nominees include people of color in every acting category, though critics say some contenders were snubbed .

With the Black, indigenous and people of color share of the U.S. population (about 43.6% in 2023) growing by about half a percent each year, nearly one-quarter (26.4%) of the top films last year had a majority BIPOC (at least half) cast — the first time in 13 years since UCLA began reporting the diversity series, researchers said.

Still, diverse faces remain largely underrepresented in the industry — particularly women. The report shows that representation of female writers, lead actors and overall cast members dropped in 2023 — even as Greta Gerwig’s female-led “Barbie” smashed box office records.

About 70.8% of lead roles were played by White people, according to the report. Also, 13 of the top 20 theatrical films in the global box office cast White leads, while only seven of the top 20 had BIPOC leads.

While the majority of the report is broken down by race and gender, the study highlights a lack of representation of transgender and nonbinary actors featured in 2023’s top films. Notably, only one actor identified as nonbinary among White leads and actors, Asian, multiracial and Native actors, according to the report. Among the White actors in 2023 films, three identified as transgender, and one Native actor identified as transgender.

Diverse audiences also want to see theatrical films with diverse casts, the report contends. The box office numbers, particularly in the top 20 films of 2023, demonstrate the power and profits wielded by audiences of color and women, researchers said. People of color dominated opening weekend sales for 14 of the top 20 films in 2023. Women led the charge among ticket buyers, with three films in the top 10. BIPOC moviegoers also bought the majority of opening weekend tickets for seven of the top 10 films of the year, according to the report.

“After examining global and domestic box-office success and audience demographics for more than a decade, we have repeatedly found that people want to see films that reflect the diversity that exists in their communities and in the world,” said Ana-Christina Ramón, co-founder of the report and director of UCLA entertainment research arm, in a release.

Other key takeaways from the UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report 2024 , focusing on films/theater in the last year:

  • Nine of the top 10 films — and 15 of the top 20 films — at the global box office featured casts with more than 30% people of color.
  • Five of the top 10 films featured casts with over 40% women.
  • Writers of color comprised 22.2% of last year’s films, while directors of color led 22.9%.
  • Actors with disabilities gained ground both in front of and behind the scenes, making up 11.3% of film leads, but remain largely underrepresented.
  • Among the top theatrical films in 2023, seven films featuring multiracial leads were most successful, with the highest median global box office figure of $180.5 million.
  • Only one of the top 10, and three of the top 20 theatrical films, for White moviegoers featured casts that were more than 30% BIPOC
  • Theatrical releases that featured the most diverse casts/actors were among the top 20 films of 2023, including “Barbie,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Elemental,” and “The Little Mermaid.”
  • Franchises — including “Creed,” “Scream” and “John Wick” — reached new box-office heights with the infusion of more diverse casts and leads.

Michael Tran, a doctoral candidate at the UCLA Entertainment and Media Research Initiative, has worked on these annual reports for the past 10 years.

“We really want to stress that movie audiences and moviegoers of color and women are really propping up an industry that’s struggled through the pandemic, the rise of streaming and the double strike we had last year,” Tran, who co-authored the report, said. “The industry would have been in a far worse place if not for moviegoers of color.”

Tran said that this year’s diversity progress was overall “an improvement” — but still “not enough or consistent.”

“We will need to make more progress in terms of leads, and also directors, writers and also actors in general,” he said. “And the story is even more stark when you get into gender diversity and the representation of people with disabilities on screen, too.”

‘Dune 2’ Jolts Box Office With Mighty $81.5 Million Debut

“ Dune: Part Two ” is riding those massive sandworms all the way to the top of box office charts.

Director Denis Villeneuve ‘s big-budget sequel has collected $81.5 million in its domestic debut and delivered a mighty, necessary jolt for struggling movie theaters. It’s the biggest opening weekend of the year and the largest since last October’s Taylor Swift concert film “The Eras Tour” ($93 million).

“This is an outstanding opening for a science-fiction [sequel],” says David A. Gross of movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “Audiences are connecting with these human, vulnerable [characters].”

At the international box office, the sequel added $97 million for a massive global tally of $178 million.

“It’s really permeated the culture,” says “Dune” producer Mary Parent. “All signs point toward a long play.”

Like the first film, “Dune: Part Two” is especially popular in Imax and other premium large formats. PLFs, as they are known in the industry, contributed a massive 48% of the film’s domestic tally. Meanwhile, Imax accounted for $18.5 million of ticket sales, representing 23% of the marketshare. Demand to watch on 70mm film — the director’s format of choice — has been so high that some brave moviegoers have resorted to 3:15 a.m. showtimes . (Yes, a.m.)

“Our most iconic film locations are virtually sold out for weeks,” says Imax CEO Rich Gelfond.

The follow-up was originally slated to hit the big screen last fall, but it was delayed to spring because of the actors strike, which prevented stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and the rest of the sprawling, buzzy cast from being able to promote the movie. On its new release date, the second “Dune” benefited from pent-up demand; there hasn’t been a blockbuster in  weeks .

Opening grosses for “Dune 2,” on the heels of Warner’s fantasy musical “Wonka,” appear to confirm Chalamet as the rarest of species: a bankable leading man. And outsized commercial results might position Villeneuve, with the possible exception of Christopher Nolan, as the filmmaker best able to deliver the types of brainy big-screen spectacles that can appeal to wide audiences.

“Audiences are responding to the combination of Denis Villeneuve’s ability to tell a story in an extraordinary way and the extraordinary cast,” says Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein. “This is a moment for Timothée Chalamet.”

With “Dune: Part Two” taking up the majority of oxygen at multiplexes, other movies in theaters fought for scraps. In a distant second place, Paramount’s musical biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” added $7.4 million from 3,390 theaters. The film, starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as the music legend, has become a surprise box office success with $82.7 million in North America and $146 million globally.

Hilary Swank’s inspirational drama “Ordinary Angels” remained in third place with $3.8 million from 3,020 locations. After two weeks on the big screen, the Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company film has collected a mere $12 million. However, “Ordinary Angels” reportedly carries a modest budget in the low double digits, which could help to offset these lackluster grosses.

At the No. 4 spot, “Madame Web” continued to sputter with $3.2 million from 3,116 theaters. Sony’s “Spider-Man” spin-off, starring Dakota Johnson as a paramedic with psychic abilities, cost $80 million and has generated a paltry $40 million domestically and $50 million internationally to date.

Faith-based TV series “The Chosen” rounded out the top five with $3.1 million from 2,215 venues. Fathom Events has rolling out the show’s Season 4 exclusively in cinemas with two-week runs of episodes, and this weekend’s run included Episodes 7 and 8. Ticket sales were slightly behind episodes four through six, which brought in $3.5 million. They steeply declined from Episodes 1 through 3, which generated $6 million to start and $14 million during its run.

Prior to this weekend, domestic box office revenues were 20% behind the same period in 2023. But after the arrival of “Dune 2,” the gap shrank to 13.5%, according to Comscore.

“What a difference a weekend makes,” says senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “Better late than never.”
