5 stars -- highly recommend Borneo Adventure

What an experience! Booked a 5D tour of Mulu with Borneo Adventure. Spent close to a month planning the trip with our guide Disney Jaboh in Kuching. Disney was a rock star - super patient, incredibly warm and very kind. He addressed all our million questions and helped us craft the perfect tour itinerary to our exact specifications. In time, talking with him was just like speaking with an old friend! We even met him for dinner in Kuching to say hi and say thanks for the memories. During the tour, we were assigned to Nelson, a super experienced guide. Again, 5/5 stars here -- he was the perfect guide and we were so so thankful to have him with us. In 20+ years of travelling to 20+ countries, Borneo Adventure is hands down in the top 3 of private tour companies I've ever engaged. They are not the cheapest, but you pay for what you get.
Could not recommend them highly enough.... we'll definitely be back for a future tour with Borneo Adventure!

Excellent day trip
We had a super day trip to Bako National Park with our guide Paul. Paul was very knowledgeable and made the trip really interesting for our kids. Bako is a super place for a day trip, we loved it. Paul made sure we found a proboscis monkey while we were there too. A great day and we would highly recommend Borneo Adventure.

Great Tours with Great Guides
We did two trips with Borneo Adventure while we were away, both were amazing (Mulu Showcaves 2D1N and Tanjung Datu 3D2N) and highly recommended. The caves and wildlife at Mulu were amazing and our guide Nelson was really great and really knowledgeable. Tanjung Datu is just a special place. Again our guide Lemon was amazing who our made the trip with his cooking, knowledge and conversation. We would use them again 100%.

Wild Sarawak
10 days | travel into the wild heart of malaysian borneo.
Wild, tropical and remote – think of Borneo as South East Asia's answer to the Amazon. This 10-day tour is full of active adventure set in natural paradise. See orangutans swinging through the rainforest treetops at a sanctuary in Semenggoh and venture into the vast Mulu cave systems. Follow the Headhunters' Trail through dense jungle in Sarawak, wander along Kuching's riverside promenade and relax on golden-sand beaches on Labuan Island.
Trip overview
- One of the last truly wild places on earth, Borneo offers rare treats for the nature lover – see orangutans at a sanctuary and quirky proboscis monkeys in Bako National Park.
- Discover the colourful history of a variety of different ethnic groups.
- Explore labyrinthian caves and watch as millions of bats emerge from their depths at sunset, darkening the sky like a plume of black smoke, in Mulu National Park.
- Follow in the infamous footsteps of tribal warriors on a trek through wild, dense jungle on the Headhunters’ Trail – rich with wildlife like hornbills and monkeys.
- Unwind after days spent trekking through jungle with a stay on tranquil Labuan Island. Relax with a well-earned beer or cocktail at your beach resort accommodation.
- It’s best to pack light for this trip. There is a strict 20kg (checked in baggage) and 7kg (hand luggage) maximum luggage limit on the included internal flights. Excess luggage will incur extra fees to the traveller.
- A small to medium size day backpack is required for the time in Mulu NP and on the Headhunters Trail. Your main pack will be forwarded on, so there will be days when you don’t have access to it. Pack light and smart.
- When staying in the National Park, accommodation is multishare and can be basic. The unqiue atmosphere and wonderful location more than make up for this though.
- This trip includes a number of wonderful long walks through forest and jungle, especially the 12 kilometre Headhunters’ Trail, so a good level of fitness is required.
Selamat datang! Welcome to Malaysia. Kuching, meaning 'cat' in Malay, is arguably the most pleasant city in Malaysian Borneo. It was home to the infamous White Raja of Sarawak, whose mysterious rule in this remote corner of the world sparked the imagination of many people who dreamt of becoming royalty. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm, which you can find details about at the hotel’s reception. In any free time before the meeting, check out this cosmopolitan city rich in architecture, where the waterfront houses a wealth of curious shops and local vegetable, spice and fish markets. This city of skyscrapers sitting near lush green jungle is easily walked around, so maybe relish the mellow vibe and head out with your new travel companions to try some local dishes like Sarawak Laksa and Kolok mee.
- Hotel (1 night)
There are no meals included on this day.
It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.
Hop in a private van to the fishing village of Kampung Bako (approximately 1 hour), then a local boat up the coast to Bako National Park (approximately 20 minutes). Bako is the oldest national park in Sarawak and features rainforest, abundant wildlife, jungle streams, waterfalls, interesting plant life, secluded beaches and trekking trails. Millions of years of erosion formed a coastline of steep cliffs, rocky headlands and stretches of white, sandy bays. Waves have carved the cliffs into fantastically shaped sea arches and sea-stacks, with coloured patterns formed by iron deposits. Weather permitting, you’ll take a leader-led walk through one of the jungle trails where you will witness different kinds of vegetation or may spot wildlife like proboscis monkeys, silver leaf monkey and the elusive Bornean bearded pigs if you are lucky. It can be a hot, but always rewarding hike. Return to Kuching in the late afternoon and spend the evening in a hotel.
- Bako National Park - Wildlife Trail Trek
Your leader will choose the appropriate trail for trekking today depending on the weather condition and the group capabilities. The trekking today will be around 2-3 hours depending on the trails chosen.
Head to the Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuary – a government-funded rehabilitation centre set in lush surrounds. The centre was set up to help reintroduce these wonderful creatures back into the wild after a life of domestication or having been orphaned. Head into the jungle via a walkway, where from a viewing platform you can watch and photograph the orangutans as they swing into view and eat the supplementary diet of bananas and milk that is laid out for them twice a day. Take some time to savour the special moments in these animals’ company. Human contact must be kept to a minimum and it's essential that you follow your leader's instructions. Afterwards, return to Kuching and the hotel, where you can freshen up from the heat. This evening perhaps mosey down to the riverbank and watch tambang ferries glide by, or head out to one of the many Chinese-influenced hawker markets for dinner and experience the range of local seafood.
- Kuching - Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuary
- Kuching - Sarawak Cultural Village - MYR95
- Sarawak River cruise - MYR65
- Kuching - Borneo Cultures Museum - MYR50
Unlike a zoo, the Orangutans at the Semenggoh Nature Reserve are semi-wild, therefore viewing these magnificent creatures can be unpredictable. They are used to watching out for the forest reserve’s caretakes during feeding time, however in the fruiting season where there is an abundance of food in the forest there will be a lower chance of seeing Orangutans.
Fly to Mulu, sending your large bag on to Limbang and packing a day bag with the essentials for the next four days. When you arrive in Mulu, head into the heart of one of the most spectacular national parks in Asia – Gunung Mulu National Park. Transfer the short distance to Mulu HQ (2 kilometres) where you’ll stay for the next 2 nights. Your leader will go through some of the options for your free time here. You can take to the some of the self-guided trails around the park, or to the treetops on the world’s longest tree based canopy walkway. Or maybe simply kick back with a book and enjoy the sounds of the nearby jungle. Later there is the chance of an optional night walk to search for some weird and wonderful insects and reptiles. Tonight you’ll stay in the park headquarters, which has its own restaurant and Information Centre. Accommodation is multishare rooms with private bathroom.
- Cabin (multishare) (1 night)
Notes: The maximum luggage allowance for today’s flight is 15kg. Excess weight will incur an extra cost to the traveller. Please note that no valuables like laptops or cameras are allowed in the cargo for your big luggage sent to Limbang
Today you have a free morning to explore or have a sleep in. Spend the afternoon strolling the walkways of this 180-million-year-old rainforest, and then catch the sunset flight of the bats at Deer Cave. The World Heritage-listed park has absolutely spectacular limestone geology, with enormous caves, vast cave networks, rock pinnacles, cliffs and gorges. In fact, its system of caves is the largest known in the world, formed when surface water worked its way through the rock, carving gigantic passages through the bedrock. Deer Cave has one of the single largest cave passages in the world, 2.2 kilometres long and 220 metres tall at its highest point. Before it was part of the park the cave was a well-known hunting ground for deer, who were attracted to the pools of salty water running off the heaps of guano. The guano comes from the millions of bats who call the cave home, and at dusk there’s a mass exodus as they emerge for their nightly feeding, like a seemingly endless black plume of smoke twisting across the sky. In nearby Lang cave you can appreciate the work that the water does on the limestone, sculpting waves on the ceiling, drawing stalagmites, columns and stalactites.

- Mulu National Park - Canopy Walk - MYR50
Leave Park HQ behind and head into the jungle. Take boats for around 30 minutes upriver to the amazing Clearwater and Wind caves, which contain Asia’s longest underwater river. The Clearwater cave system runs for more than 200 kilometres, over 100 of which have been explored. The system gets its name from the bright jungle pool at the base of the steps that lead up to the cave mouth. Wind Cave draws a cooling breeze through its lengths and features some of Gunung Mulu’s best cave formations, while Clearwater is covered in a species of bright green plant that is unique to the park and offers a real opportunity to see the water at work on the rock. Afterwards, take a longboat downriver before disembarking to hike through undisturbed jungle to Camp 5, nestled at the end of Melinau Gorge (approximately 9 kilometres). During dry season, the boats may need to be pushed over certain sections of the river, so it is advisable to wear strap on sandals or shoes that can get wet. At Camp 5 you will sleep in these wonderful surrounds, on mats on raised open-air platforms in a mixed gender dormitory, with shared bathroom facilities and cold water showers. Bedding is not provided so bring your own sleeping sheet and a warm layer for cool nights. Mosquito nets are available to rent for a small charge. Please be aware that at certain times of the year there can be many bees around Camp 5.

Today you’ll tackle the infamous Headhunters' Trail. Located in an isolated area of the Bornean jungle, this 12-kilometre (approximately 5-hour) trail takes its name from its historical role as the route taken by warring parties between the Tutoh and Limbang rivers. The trek is through dense jungle along a well-defined, mainly flat track, although the way can be muddy during the rainy season. You'll also have to cross some streams by rope bridges, wooden walkways, logs or by getting your feet wet as you wade through. You’ll be surrounded by stunningly diverse flora, massive bird-filled trees, and the magical sounds of the forest – a hornbill flapping its wings, the cries of monkeys, and the pulse of cicadas and crickets. Then you’ll take a boat from Kuala Terikan to Kuala Mendalam, a journey of around 4 hours. Depending on how much rainfall there’s been, you may be required to help push the boat over shallow parts of the river and there will be a stop at a ranger station for lunch along the way. It’s a long, challenging and rewarding day. Travel on to Limbang by private vehicle (approximately 1.5 – 2 hrs), where you can freshen up and enjoy a good night's rest after two long days of trekking.
- Mulu National Park - Guided trek along Headhunters' Trails
- Mulu National Park - Longboat ride along the Melinau & Terikan Rivers
After breakfast this morning take a short walk to the ferry terminal for an 8AM ferry to Labuan Island (approx. 2-2.5 hours). On arrival you’ll have a free afternoon and evening at a beach resort. Relax and recover after yesterday’s trek, chilling out with a cold drink and a good book. Maybe head to Layang Layang Beach for a swim and get together for a sunset cocktail by the end of the day.
- Resort (1 night)
- Labuan Island - Sunset cocktail drink
Enjoy some more free time on the island before catching a ferry and express bus to Kota Kinabalu (approx. 3-4 hours), the capital of Sabah and a modern metropolis that rebounded from multiple bombings during WWII. Tonight, perhaps head out for a final meal with your group to celebrate your Borneo adventure – the night market is filled with fresh grilled seafood.
Aside from breakfast, there are no activities planned for the final day and you are able to depart the accommodation at any time.

What You'll Do
We pick you up from the hotel and drive 40 minutes to the scenic jetty of Kampong Bako . From the jetty, you will take a 25-minute boat ride to the national park headquarters, situated in the Bako Peninsula. Bako is one of the best places in Sarawak to see wildlife in its natural surroundings, including Borneo’s signature long-nose proboscis monkeys, long-tailed macaques, wild boars (bearded pig), snakes, and monitor lizards.
There are several trails inside the park depending on the group’s level of fitness and interest . The 16-square kilometers of forests are home to seven distinct ecosystems including beach vegetation, mangroves, and a peat swamp forest. Constant erosion over millions of years has turned the Bako coastline into a stunning geographical landmark with spectacular cliffs, sea stacks, and pristine sandy beaches.
This small-group tour includes a local lunch which is served at the national park canteen before the return boat trip back to the mainland. The boat trip offers more opportunities for wildlife spotting including estuary crocodiles and shorebirds. The day ends with a transfer back to your city hotel after reaching Kampong Bako jetty.
F loat down an untouched stretch of the Sarawak River to discover hidden waterfalls, explore limestone formations, and take the opportunity to have a dip in the refreshing mountain water. At the halfway mark, explore how the locals farm and fish. This is where you get the chance to feed the fish in the river feeding grounds — a sustainable fish farming method that has been practiced for ages.
After the halfway point, continue to paddle leisurely and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the rainforest . This serene and smooth flowing river is a great place for friends and family to compete in races and water fights! When water levels permit, stop at a mini waterfall for swimming before ending the fantastic kayaking tour at the Kampong Semadang. Enjoy a well-earned lunch of local home-cooked cuisine at the kayaking base camp before heading back to the city.
We start early with a transfer to visit the Semenggoh Nature Reserve , a large enclosed area of rainforest which is home to endangered orangutans, rescued from captivity, and kept for rehabilitation. During the scheduled feeding time, some orangutans may descend from the rainforest to the lower branches of trees near the feeding platform. Those lucky few will be offered a wealth of facial expressions by mankind’s closest relative.
After feeding time, we take a 30-minute scenic drive to the majestic Fairy Cave filled with bats and impressive mountain chambers .
We then jump into the saddle to begin our mountain biking adventure! Head off-road to explore hidden gold mines and cycle through some spectacular limestone karst landscape. After the ride, we stop by the historical gold mining town of Bau for a well-deserved lunch before heading back to the city.
This unique bike tour covers 85% of Kuching’s “sights” as listed by the Lonely Planet, and much more!
Discover the hidden gems of Kuching, see our temples and monuments through the hidden lanes inside the heritage zone, and indulge in a variety of popular Sarawak street foods, drinks, and desserts ! After a relaxing cruise across the Sarawak River on a traditional “sampan” boat, we will guide you through off-the-beaten-track routes of the rural Malay “kampong” and wooden bridges lining the banks of the great Sarawak River .
Along the way, you can explore the vibrant and exotic open-air market of Kubah Ria . Witness the vibrant color of tropical fresh fruits and vegetables, shop for local handicrafts at non-tourist prices, and discover a whole range of jungle produce including unique wild ferns, exotic vegetables, and plants. Open up your senses and discover the authentic Sarawak! You will go home with both your mind and soul enriched… and your stomach fulfilled!
- The sequence of activities may change depending on our booking availability. We will inform you at least 1 day prior to the activity so that you have plenty of time to prepare fully for the next activity.

Sarawak launches ‘Gateway to Borneo’ at world’s largest tourism trade fair in Berlin
Abdul Karim (centre) and other delegate members at the launch of the campaign. Also in the photo is Sabah’s Minister for Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Christina Liew (fifth left).
KUCHING (March 6): Sarawak took centre stage at the world’s largest tourism trade fair Internationale Tourismus-Börse (ITB) in Berlin, Germany on Tuesday with the launch of its transformative ‘Gateway to Borneo’ campaign.
A statement from Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) said the campaign signifies a brand refresh and strategically positions Sarawak as the premier gateway to Borneo, encompassing Kalimantan, Sabah, and Brunei.
According to STB, the campaign is in sync with ITB 2024’s theme, ‘Take Travel Technology to the Next Level. Together,’ whereby Sarawak is poised to share its natural pride with the world – a rich tapestry woven with threads of Culture, Adventure, Nature, Food, and Festivals
It explained through this campaign, Sarawak aims to amplify its allure as a prime tourism destination, inviting global travellers to embark on a journey of discovery and inspiration.
Complementing the campaign’s overarching theme is a refreshed “Sarawak More to Discover” (SMTD) destination logo, an update which maintains the vigour and excitement of the region’s marketing strategy.
STB said this is to position Sarawak as a plethora of culture, adventure, nature, food and festivals, along with authentic experiences not found anywhere else in the world and yet to be discovered.
It added that the STMD logo serves as a visual representation of Sarawak’s pristine rainforests, the allure of its coastal waters and the colourful diverse ethnicities of its people.
The logo also showcases the majestic silhouette of the Rhinoceros hornbill, an iconic symbol synonymous with Sarawak’s cherished moniker, “Land of the Hornbills”.
Meanwhile, Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah in the statement said this strategic move not only reinforces Sarawak’s commitment to digitalisation but also highlights Sarawak’s pivotal role as the entry point to the wonders of Borneo.
“We are thrilled to unveil the evolution of Sarawak’s tourism narratives with our ‘Gateway to Borneo’ campaign. It is not just a geographic distinction but also embodies a contemporary and timeless aesthetic, resonating with the evolving tastes of our discerning audience,” he said.
He also said Sarawak is targeting 4 million visitors arrival in 2024, and invites the world to uncover the wonders that await in Sarawak as their ‘Gateway’ into a new world of experience, discovery, and inspiration.
At the event, STB also signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tischler Reisen (TR), to continue to elevate Sarawak’s prominence among European travellers.
With TR’s 40-year track record and an extensive network of 600 agencies throughout Germany, Sarawak aims to showcase its diverse tour packages both online and offline, enticing discerning travellers across Europe.
STB said this partnership aligns with Sarawak’s strategic vision to position itself as a preferred destination in the European market, while the remarkable 121 per cent surge in European visitor arrivals in 2023 against 2022 highlights the growing appeal of Sarawak’s offerings.
“With the resilient 81.5 per cent recovery achievement of the Europe market’s performance in 2023, as compared to 2019, the state’s best year for European visitor arrivals, Sarawak is optimistic to surpass 2019 levels in terms of European visitor arrivals this year,” it added.
STB also said the upcoming Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), in celebration of its 27th year, will be themed ‘Evolution’ to underscore music’s dynamic nature across generations and cultures.
To be held from June 28 to 30, it said this year’s RWMF embraces the transformative power of music, weaving together culture and environment.
It added for all its efforts in promoting responsible practices and sustainability for the RWMF, STB recently garnered international acclaim such as winning the Best Global PR Campaign Award at the World Communications Forum Award (WCFA), Davos Switzerland.
It also won the ‘Nation’s Pride Award’ for ‘Tourism Promotion Excellence’ at the BrandLaureate BestBrands Awards 2023 and two Gold awards and the Campaign of the Year Awards at the Malaysia Public Relations Awards (MPRA).

KUCHING: Sarawak aims to position itself as the preferred destination for European tourists through its new Gateway to Borneo campaign.
State Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah launched the campaign at the ITB Berlin 2024 tourism trade fair on Tuesday (March 5).
The Sarawak Tourism Board said the campaign positioned Sarawak as the main gateway to Borneo, which also includes Sabah, Kalimantan and Brunei.
"Through this campaign, Sarawak aims to amplify its allure as a prime destination, inviting global travellers to embark on a journey of discovery and inspiration," it said in a statement.
Sarawak received 57,496 European travellers last year, an increase of 121% from the previous year.
The board said the Europe market's performance last year also showed a recovery of 81.5% compared to 2019, when the state recorded its highest number of European visitor arrivals.
"Sarawak is optimistic of surpassing 2019 levels in terms of European arrivals this year," it said.
The board also signed a renewed memorandum of understanding with German tour operator Tischler Reisen (TR) at ITB Berlin to raise Sarawak's profile among European travellers.
Under the partnership, TR will help promote Sarawak with offline and online tour packages through its network of 600 agencies across Germany.
