Troubleshooting, remove dictation button from safari address bar on iphone & ipad.

Remove the microphone dictation button from Safari search bar on iPhone or iPad

You may have noticed a microphone button in the address bar of Safari on iPhone or iPad, and when the microphone icon is tapped it will activate dictation, turning your voice into text.

Many users may accidentally tap on the microphone dictation button in Safari on iPhone or iPad, and thus may want to disable and remove the dictation button from Safari on their device.

It turns out that removing the microphone button in the Safari search bar is not as simple as you may hope it to be however, because by doing so you also have to disable Siri and the dictation feature. Whether or not that is acceptable to you is for you to decide, but here’s how it is done.

How to Remove the Microphone / Dictation Button in Safari Address Bar on iPhone & iPad

Removing the microphone dictation button means disabling Siri and dictation features broadly:

  • Open the “Settings” app
  • Go to “Screen Time”
  • Go to “Content & Privacy Restrictions”
  • Choose “Allowed Apps”
  • Choose “Disable Siri & Dictation”

Now the dictation microphone button will be removed from the Safari address/search/URL bar on the iPhone or iPad.

Currently, there is no way to remove the dictation buttons from Safari without also disabling Siri and the dictation feature everywhere else, but if you don’t use those features then you won’t be missing them. Keep in mind this is not the only way to disable Siri if you don’t use the voice assistant, but as far as we know, this is the only way to remove the microphone button from Safari and the Messages app.

Thanks to @lapcatsoftware on Twitter for the tip idea.

If you know of another way to remove or disable the dictation microphone buttons in iOS and iPadOS, let us know in the comments!

What Sceen Time???????????

It’s just like the three dots above URL I keep accidentally activating that allow for split screen of apps on iPad. Yeah, nice ideal, but you can’t disable which sometimes that would be useful. Apple seems to know best how to use their devices and so as users we have little choice but to learn to accept the changes and re-train ourselves. Myself, I barely use Siri anymore, it’s just not that useful.

In June 2021, Apple released iOS 15, the most recent version of its iOS operating system, which was launched on September 20, 2021. Redesigned FaceTime capabilities, tools to decrease distractions, a new notifications experience, enhanced privacy features, entire redesigns for Safari, Weather, and Maps, and more are all included in iOS 15.

In iOS 15, notifications have been revamped to include contact photographs for people and larger app icons. A notification summary collects notifications in one place for distribution at a convenient time and organizes them by importance to reduce distraction.

All New Safari in iOS15

Safari now has a whole new look. Controls are now easier to access with one hand, allowing users to focus more on the content of a webpage. Users may now effortlessly slide between tabs thanks to a new, condensed tab bar that hovers at the bottom of the screen. Tab Groups enable users to keep tabs and access them from any device at any time. For the first time, there is also a customized start page and web extensions.

All controls have been relocated to the bottom of the screen, making one-handed usage considerably more convenient. A new tab bar appears at the bottom of the screen, making swiping between tabs a breeze. There’s also a Smart Search feature on the tab bar for faster web searches.

Tab Groups let you organize tabs into folders and sync them across all of your iCloud devices. A tab overview grid view is now available to provide you with a quick overview of your tabs.

Do you need to refresh a web page that is taking too long to load? To renew it, simply pull it down and let go. You can use voice search and personalize your start page. Finally, Safari on iOS supports browser extensions.

Because Apple values privacy, iOS 15 includes Intelligent Tracking Prevention, which prevents trackers from using your IP address to “follow you.” Last but not least, Safari will upgrade unsecured HTTP connections to secure HTTPS connections for sites that enable it.

Changes To The Safari Address Bar

Upside down address bar.

Turn Off iOS 15 Safari Address Bar Dictation

When iOS 15 was released, users were taken aback by the fact that Safari appeared to be inverted. Earlier iOS 15 betas featured an even more radical design that hid numerous common functionalities. The refresh, share, and tab buttons were completely hidden in the earliest betas. Thankfully, Apple only turned it on its head. This change was made for good reason by Apple. iPhones were significantly shorter before the iPhone 6, and most people’s fingers could easily reach the top of the screen. iPhones have become increasingly taller over time. Even with huge hands, reaching the top of the screen, where Safari’s address bar sat, required a lot of stretching.

Apple turned it to a “tab bar” and placed it to the bottom of the screen, where everyone can easily reach it, to solve that worry (reachability doesn’t seem to be a big deal). Just like the old address bar, you may tap it to enter a URL or search word.

Another good feature of the bottom-mounted tab bar is that you can now rapidly switch between tabs by swiping left or right. You can also slide up on the tab bar to expose all tabs instead of pressing the tab button in the lower-right corner, though that action is a little tough on a Face ID-enabled iPhone because you have to start just above where you’d ordinarily swipe up to return to the Home screen.

However for those of you who are not very happy with this change. You can easily switch the address bar back to its position by visiting the Settings>Safari> choose the tab settings.

Safari Voice Search

Turn Off iOS 15 Safari Address Bar Dictation

The second most common issue that most customers are facing with the new safari address bar apart from its layout is that with the automatic address bar diction.

Since the upgradation to iOS15, the dictation mic located in the safari address bar gets activated. As it is extremely near to typing space on the bar, one can accidentally tap on the mic. Upon activation, this mic starts listening for a dictated search or web address. This can be highly annoying if it keeps happening multiple times as it is nothing but an interruption.

To get rid of this, you can try the following steps.

  • Go to Settings
  • Select General
  • Under General, go to Keyboard
  • Tap the Enable Diction Switch to off. If you plan to enable this setting, then turn it on but if you want to disable this setting, turn it off.

Turn Off iOS 15 Safari Address Bar Dictation

You can now check if this method has worked.

Another way that you can try is here:

  • From your home screen, Go to Settings
  • Under Settings, select Safari
  • As you scroll, locate the microphone
  • Select Deny
  • After this, you can go and check Safari.

These methods will help you solve this annoying issue.

Final Comments

However, if the issue still persists, you can visit apple support or wait for the new iOS update and hope that Apple offers other solutions to it.

Ask a new question

Can I remove the microphone icon from the taskbar search feature, while keeping the search bar itself?

To clarify my question completely;

  • I do not want to remove the search bar;
  • I do not wish to disable Cortana completely;
  • I wish to continue using the search box, and;
  • I wish to remove the icon and nothing else.

I want to keep exactly the search bar embedded in the task bar, without the microphone icon located to the right of the box. I never use it, but I love the search box, and so when I accidentally press the microphone icon it delays my search.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Jane,

Noting all the details that you have provided.

We understand that you want to disable Cortana's microphone icon on the search bar. By design, disabling Cortana's microphone icon in the taskbar is not an option. What we can do is to disable or hide Cortana search bar but not the Microphone icon.

After one of the last few iOS 15 updates, I noticed in the bottom address bar where the refresh button used to be on the right there’s now a microphone for voice to text. I really don’t care for voice to text and liked using the refresh button there, is there any way to change this back? I keep hitting it out if habit when I’d like to refresh

Stop Safari from Accessing iPhone’s Camera and Microphone

While browsing the web, I allow websites to access the features of my device only when I deem it right. The latest iOS ecosystem enables Safari to access the iPhone’s camera and microphone automatically. Even though I completely trust the stock web browser for iOS, I think it would be better to turn it off and allow it to access them only on the need basis to ensure more security. So, how would you stop Safari from having the auto access to your iOS device mic and camera? Here is how to get it done quickly!

Prevent Safari from Automatically Access Camera and Microphone on iPhone and iPad

Step #1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device → Scroll down and tap on Safari.

Tap on Settings then Safari on iPhone or iPad

Step #2. Now, scroll down again and turn off the switch next to Camera & Microphone Access which is under Privacy & Security section.

Revoke Camera and Microphone Access for Safari in iOS 11

From now onwards, you will have to manually allow websites to access your device camera and microphone.

How to Allow Websites to Automatically Access Your iPhone/iPad Camera and Microphone

If you ever want to allow websites to have access to your iOS device’ camera and mic, you can easily lift the restriction.

Step #1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device → Tap on Safari.

Step #2. Now, turn on the switch next to Camera & Microphone Access.

Wrapping up

Whether I’m using my Mac or iPhone, Safari remains my top choice to browse the web more securely and fast. The stock web browser for iOS has vastly improved in recent times. For instance, you can now automatically save your reading list from iCloud for offline reading, use experimental features, and completely stop websites from tracking you.

Recently, I made a complete guide on how to customize website options in Safari on macOS High Sierra. If you are using Mac, I would recommend you check out this post to browse the web with the desired peace of mind.

How to use voice search in Safari on iPhone and iPad

Safari Voice Search Hero

In Apple's iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 , you can use your voice to search in mobile Safari using Siri. It's available on the best iPhones and best iPads .

Here's more about the feature and how it works. (Hint: You use your voice!)

Using your voice with Safari on iPhone and iPad

Instead of your fingers, you can now do searches on Safari using your voice. To do so:

  • Open the Safari app on your device's Home screen.
  • Choose the Tab Bar at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap the microphone icon at the far right of the text field.
  • Voice your search .

A Safari search acts differently depending on the results. If Siri can identify a specific website based on the search (for example, iMore, it will open it immediately (iMore.com). If, however, your search is more generic ("spinach salad"), you'll see different results as you can see below:

Big changes

Safari has seen significant changes come it's way on iOS/iPad 15. And these changes are one of the seven features you might have missed on the latest update.

Besides voice search, there's Share with You , making it easier to find content sent to you through Messages and new privacy protections. Mobile Safari also includes a bottom tab bar, customizable start page, Tab Groups with syncing, web extensions , and more.

Configure your Safari browser settings to always enable the mic

The purpose of this article is to give you tips for enabling your microphone if you're using the Safari web browser. You’ll need to give Safari permission to access the mic on student devices.

How do I give Safari permission?

Safari should ask for permission to access the microphone the first time you use Amira. You should only need to give Amira permission once. When you launch Amira and you see the following message at the top of your browser window, click Allow .

Screenshot 2023-08-26 at 9.03.55 AM.png

How do I re-enable access to the microphone in Safari?

If you do not get a prompt to enable your microphone, or you begin using Amira and get an alert at the beginning of a session about enabling your microphone, follow these steps:

  • Start by clicking the small red microphone icon in the browser address bar
  • In the pop up that appears, select Always allow on amiratutor.com ‍

Screenshot 2023-08-26 at 9.04.33 AM.png

If no microphone displays, you may need to adjust your system settings to recognize a microphone. See instructions in next section.

My browser has access to the microphone but Amira still can’t hear. What do I do?

You may need to change your system preferences to recognize your device’s internal microphone.

You can watch this video or follow these 5 steps:

  • Tap the settings icon
  • Find Safari within the menu options along the left side of the screen
  • Tap Clear History and Website Data > Clear
  • Tap Siri & Search > Toggle all Siri options off
  • Scroll down to "Settings for Websites" and click Microphone
  • Choose Ask if you want Safari to request access every time you visit a website - or - choose Allow to allow the use of the microphone without permission every time you visit a website

You may need to change your system preferences to recognize your device’s internal microphone. Here's how:

  • Click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner
  • Select System Preferences ‍
  • Click the Sound option
  • In the Input tab, select your microphone and adjust the volume to at least 50%
  • Close (x) the window when you’re finished

how-to-allow-mic-on-safari

Introduction

Safari is a widely used web browser known for its sleek interface and robust security features. However, like many modern browsers, Safari includes privacy settings that restrict access to certain features, such as the microphone. This can be a hindrance when trying to use web-based applications that require microphone input, such as video conferencing, voice recording, or online calls.

In this guide, we will walk you through the process of allowing microphone access on Safari. Whether you're using a Mac computer, iPhone, or iPad, the steps to enable microphone access are relatively straightforward. Testing microphone access allows you to ensure that audio input is seamlessly captured and utilized within the Safari browser. Whether you intend to engage in video conferencing, voice recording, or online calls, conducting a microphone test is crucial for confirming that the permissions are correctly configured.

On a Mac computer, you can test microphone access by visiting a website or web app that utilizes audio input. For example, you can join a video call using a web-based conferencing platform or access a voice recording tool. Upon accessing these applications, initiate the microphone functionality to verify that audio input is being captured without any issues. If the microphone functions as expected without encountering any access denials or errors, it indicates that the microphone access within Safari has been successfully configured.

When using an iPhone or iPad, testing microphone access involves similar steps. Access a web-based application or website that requires microphone input, such as a video conferencing platform or a voice messaging service. Initiate the microphone feature within the application to ensure that audio input is being captured accurately. If the microphone operates seamlessly without any access restrictions, it confirms that the microphone access settings within Safari are appropriately configured on your iOS device.

By conducting a thorough microphone test across different web-based applications and services, you can gain confidence in the functionality of the microphone within Safari. This verification process ensures that you can fully engage with audio-dependent features without encountering any unexpected limitations or access denials.

As you conclude the microphone testing process, you can rest assured that the necessary permissions have been granted within Safari, allowing you to make the most of its microphone functionality across a diverse range of web-based experiences.

Voice search icon in Safari is missing on MAC and iPhone

Is the voice search option in Safari no longer available? I noticed recently that I'm no longer seeing the mic icon in the google search window, only the "camera" icon to search for images (see snapshot below). I do know that I have voice control always enabled on my Mac, but have never had an issue with not seeing voice search in Safari until recently. The icon is no longer in Safari on my iPhone either, which suggests to me that it may no longer be available. I've gone through several troubleshooting tips and nothing seems to work. Thanks for any assistance!

Hello GoodeTeam,

Based on the app developers support website, you'll need to be using Google Chrome to have this option. See Use "Hey Google" voice searches & actions - iPhone & iPad for more information.

"Turn on voice search

  • On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google app .
  • At the top right, tap your  Profile picture or initial   > Settings  > Voice and Assistant .
  • From here, you can change settings like your language and whether you want to have a voice search start when you say, "Ok Google.""

If you have feedback or questions for the developer of this feature, you'll want to contact them directly: Google Search Help

  • VoiceOver Jumps to Top Of Page on Activation I was recently forced to upgrade to iOS 12.1.3 on my iPad Pro 10.5 from iOS 11. And once again, activating VoiceOver causes both Safari and Chrome to jump to the top of the page. This had occurred in earlier iOS releases but had apparently been fixed in 11. This is especially troublesome as some webpages I have read back are 50-150 pages when VoiceOver is turned on. I have been getting around the issue by memorizing unique words in the section I am reading and have Find open and searching those words. This can either stop the ‘Top of Page’ behaviour or allow you to quickly return to that position. I imagine this is especially troublesome for those with limited vision who rely on VoiceOver to read back a page and would have relied on VoiceOver to tell what words were on a page to start. Any idea how to stop VoiceOver from jumping to the top of a page? Is there a way I can submit this issue to the Apple developers? Your help is greatly appreciated. Sincerely Cameron 974 3
