Tom Cruise may keep quiet about his kids, but the “Top Gun: Maverick” actor is a father of three.

The Golden Globe winner became a parent while married to Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001.

After struggling to conceive, the former couple adopted daughter Isabella and son Connor in 1992 and 1995, respectively.

Amid their divorce, the “Big Little Lies” alum suffered an ectopic pregnancy . After splitting from Cruise and moving on with Keith Urban , Kidman later welcomed daughters Sunday and Faith via surrogate.

As for Cruise, he moved on with Katie Holmes in 2005. The duo welcomed their daughter, Suri, in April 2006, seven months before tying the knot in Italy.

Holmes filed for divorce from the Oscar nominee in June 2012, and their divorce was settled the following month. Keep scrolling to meet Cruise’s kids.

Isabella Jane Cruise

Kidman and Cruise adopted Isabella shortly after she was born in 1992, and their daughter has followed in the “Mission: Impossible” star’s Scientologist footsteps.

In a March 2019 newsletter for the organization, Isabella thanked her dad “for everything.”

Although Kidman keeps quiet about her relationship with Isabella, she did speak about her adult children in a November 2018 Who interview .

“They are adults,” the Emmy winner said of Isabella and Connor at the time. “They are able to make their own decisions.

“ They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them,” she continued.

“I know 150 percent that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is.”

Connor was also raised in the Church of Scientology after being adopted in 1995.

Cruise and Kidman’s adult son is active on social media and has documented his fishing trips, his new buzzcut hairstyle and more.

Over the years, Connor and his dad have been photographed on rare outings.

The duo watched basketball games together in Connor’s younger years, and have more recently been spotted boarding a helicopter and hanging out on the “Jack Reacher” set.

Suri Cruise

Holmes gave birth to Suri in 2006 and has maintained a close bond with her daughter.

The “Dawson’s Creek” alum told Town & Country in 2017 that she provides the little one with a “stable and innocent” childhood .

Cruise, however, still has “no part” of his youngest child’s life , a source exclusively told Page Six in March 2022.

Suri Cruise walks on street

In a 2012 defamation lawsuit against Bauer Media, the “Jerry Maguire” star said he didn’t see Suri for three months after his and Holmes’ breakup.

“Listen, when there is a divorce … things change,” Cruise said. “It’s not an ideal situation.”

Ex-Scientologist Leah Remini has asserted that Cruise “can’t be connected” to Suri because Holmes is considered a “suppressive person” or “enemy” in the religion.

Inside Tom Cruise's Relationship With His Daughter Suri Now

Tom Cruise smiling

If you're a fan of going to the movies, odds are you've seen at least one Tom Cruise project. The "Mission: Impossible" star is absurdly famous around the world. As a result, many parts of his life have played out in very public ways on very public stages.

Cruise is also a dad to three children. He shares his oldest, Isabella and Connor, with ex-wife Nicole Kidman , and his youngest, Suri , with ex-wife Katie Holmes. While it's clear that Cruise has a great relationship with Isabella and Connor, and both children are active members of his Scientology faith (per The U.S. Sun ), it's less clear what kind of relationship — if any — that he has with Suri. In fact, when Holmes and Cruise divorced, he affirmed that Holmes' desire to keep Suri out of the Scientology faith was a factor in their split (per HuffPost ).

The last public photos of Cruise and Suri date all the way back to 2012, when the two were snapped visiting Disneyland (per Yahoo! ). Here's a look into Tom Cruise's relationship with Suri and where it stands today.

Tom Cruise was so excited about Katie's pregnancy that he bought a sonogram machine

Like a lot of expectant parents, Tom Cruise was ecstatic about the impending arrival of his third child, Suri Cruise. In fact, he was so excited about Suri that he reportedly bought his own ultrasound machine so that he could see her every day. Cruise told Barbara Walters about the purchase, which can cost up to $200,000 (per  BBC News ). He seemed to understand that the purchase was on the lavish end, as he reassured people that the machine would be donated to a hospital after Katie Holmes gave birth.

However, not everyone thought the act was a great idea. In fact, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine issued a statement condemning the act, noting that the buy bordered on abusing the equipment. President Lennard Greenbaum, MD, said, in part, that "Tom Cruise's recent purchase of an ultrasound machine for personal use at home is both inappropriate and in violation of FDA rules addressing the sale of medical equipment."

Tom Cruise described his daughter Suri's birth as 'spiritual'

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes welcomed Suri Cruise on April 18, 2006 . From all accounts, and especially from Cruise's, Suri's arrival into the world was fairly extraordinary. In fact, only a few days after her birth, Cruise described the experience to "20/20" and still seemed in awe of everything he witnessed (via ABC News ). He said, "It was everything that we wanted it to be. ... It was spiritual. It was powerful. It was indescribable."

Plenty of outlets shared news of Suri's birth, as public interest in the newborn was quite high. CBS News  noted that Suri weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and clocked in at 20 inches long. A representative for Cruise and Holmes also shared information about her name, noting that Suri has Hebrew origins and can mean "princess," as well as Persian roots, which could give her name the meaning "red rose."

Notably, Cruise and Holmes were also able to leave their home to head to the hospital in private, which was quite a feat considering the vast amount of attention they were receiving at the time.

Tom Cruise and Suri Cruise appeared to have a good relationship until 2012

In 2004, a then-engaged Katie Holmes admitted to Seventeen that she had once fantasized about marrying Tom Cruise (per HuffPost ). Fast-forward a few years, and Holmes found herself walking away from the very marriage she once said she wanted.

From all appearances, Tom Cruise and daughter Suri had a solid parent-child relationship up until 2012. That was the year that Katie Holmes filed for divorce in a move that apparently surprised Cruise. While speaking to German TV network ProSieben (via CBS News ), he admitted that he didn't see the divorce coming at all, saying, "I didn't expect it." He added, "Life is a tragicomedy. You need to have a sense of humor."

It seems that after he recovered from the shock of his wife of six years wanting a divorce, he bounced back pretty quickly. InStyle noted that the two were able to work through their divorce pretty quickly, with a settlement being reached after only 11 days.

He admitted that Katie Holmes left him to 'protect' Suri from Scientology

While Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have been pretty quiet when it comes for the exact hows and whys of their divorce, when pushed, Cruise definitely let something slip: One of big reasons Holmes said she wanted a divorce was reportedly to "protect" their daughter, Suri, from Cruise's religion, Scientology . The admission came out during his deposition during a libel lawsuit he filed against a tabloid. When asked if Holmes felt she had to protect Suri by leaving the relationship, as reported by  HuffPost , he first replied that the question was "offensive" and that "there is no need to protect my daughter from my religion," before saying, "Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes."

On top of that, Cruise also admitted that Suri was no longer a practicing member of the religion (per TMZ ). While HuffPost asserts this means Suri has now been deemed a "suppressive person" in the eyes of the Church of Scientology, there have been no public statements made to that effect. Notably, "suppressive" people are often, if not always, "cut off" from those that are still active members of Scientology.

Tom Cruise was not awarded custody of Suri

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes hammered out the details of their divorce settlement in 11 days (per InStyle ), which is pretty remarkable. Surprisingly to many, Cruise was not awarded custody of the pair's daughter, Suri Cruise, at all, and instead walked away from the discussions with visitation rights only. In fact, Tom Cruise was told he can visit with Suri up to 10 days a month, according to Us Weekly .

Cruise also committed to a fairly hefty sum for child support, and TMZ reported that he pays over $33,000 a month for Suri's care. While that's noting to sniff at, it's a far cry from the sum a judge could have probably ordered him to pay if the divorce had gone to court, especially as his overall net worth is believed to be approximately $600 million (per Celebrity Net Worth ). Cruise is also in charge of covering any necessary expenses Suri might rack up, including medical and dental insurance, schooling, and college, and he also funds extracurricular activities (per TMZ).

It sounds like Tom Cruise doesn't always see Suri in person

Even though the custody agreement struck between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes makes it clear that he can see their daughter, Suri Cruise, for 10 days a month, it seems like he hasn't been able to make that happen. On top of that, a source apparently close to the situation told Us Weekly that this seems to be a deliberate choice that Cruise is making. The source told the publication, "Every person is allowed to see their child if they wanted to. He chooses not to because she is not a Scientologist."

Outspoken critic of Scientology Tony Ortega spoke to Us Weekly about what might be going on behind closed doors, explaining that it's possible Holmes signed a document agreeing not to speak badly of the religion in order to get full custody. Ortega added that Holmes only had one objective: to take care of Suri. He said, "She wanted to get away and she wanted to get Suri."

In 2013, Tom Cruise admitted he hadn't seen Suri Cruise for 100 days

Things only got messier for Tom Cruise in the year after his divorce was finalized. In 2013, he admitted that he hadn't seen his youngest child for at least 100 days, explaining that his prolonged absence was due to his filming schedule.

According to  People , Cruise said in a deposition hearing for her lawsuit again Bauer Publishing that it was "impossible" for him to see Suri during that time, and on top of that, he claimed that the then 7-year-old seemed just fine without him. After sharing that he's "very good" at talking to his daughter on the phone, Cruise added, "I also find that, you know, Suri is a very happy child, and confident, and has a good sense of herself."

He further explained that, though he missed Suri's first day of school, that was because his daughter didn't ask him to be there herself.

How long has it been since he's seen his daughter in person?

While Tom Cruise might have been able to explain why he didn't see Suri Cruise for 100 days, he then reportedly missed out on seeing his daughter in person for over 1,000 days. In 2016, In Touch Weekly reported that Cruise had not seen or exchanged words with Suri in over two and a half years. A source allegedly close to the situation told the publication that the pair had been using video chat and text messaging to stay in touch but that it had slowed down, before adding that Suri no longer really bought her father's explanations for why he was missing. The source said, "He uses his film commitments as an excuse, but the truth is that doesn't hold much weight with Suri anymore."

As in the past, some believe that Cruise's religion is the reason why he keeps missing out on his daughter's life. The same source told In Touch as much, noting, "He's disconnected from Katie, and then de facto from Suri, because of her connection to Katie. He hasn't seen her since she was 7."

A friend reportedly said Tom Cruise never meant to 'be estranged' from Suri

Despite Tom Cruise's reportedly prolonged period of estrangement from Suri, an alleged friend of his has stated that the actor never meant to be so far removed from his daughter. While speaking to Hollywood Life in 2019, the friend explained that, even though Cruise isn't with Suri on important days like her birthday, he's always planning for them. The friend said, "Tom does plan to send Suri a gift and call her on her birthday."

The friend added that Cruise has a lot of love for Suri, and that being this distant from his daughter wasn't something he anticipated when he and Katie Holmes welcomed Suri to the world. The friend explained, "Tom never intended to be estranged from his daughter when he decided to have a family with Katie and looks forward to repairing the relationship one day."

While it's unclear when Cruise will ever reconnect with his daughter, assuming the reports about their estrangement are true, one thing that is certainly true is that the path getting to this point has been long, winding, and, truth be told, quite confusing. Perhaps the two will grow closer when Suri is an adult.

Tom Cruise doesn't live in the same state as Suri

One factor that likely complicates the relationship between Tom Cruise and daughter Suri is that they don't live in the same state — or even the same country. While Suri lives in New York City with her mom, Katie Holmes, Cruise has reportedly been living in London, England, since April 2021 (per In Touch Weekly ).

A source told the publication that the city is a natural fit for Cruise, explaining that he especially enjoys the rainy weather and being able to walk around his new home. He is also reportedly fond of the city because of the anonymity it lends him. The source said, "If he wears a hat and mask, he can slip into bookstores or antique shops and no one knows it's him. He's got family living there, too, which gives him a sense of belonging."

As for Suri, she and her mom moved to New York following the divorce. Holmes admitted to InStyle in 2020 that the city isn't quite as private as she'd like, but she said that the city is just right for her and Suri. She shared, "What I love about New York is that for me and my child, this is our vibe."

Isabella and Connor have both kept a lower profile in recent years, but Connor and Cruise were spotted at a Los Angeles Dodgers game in 2013.

Like their father, both Connor and Isabella are Scientologists , at least according to a 2018 interview Kidman did with Australian magazine Who.

"They have made choices to be Scientologists, and, as a mother, it's my job to love them," Kidman said in the interview . "And I am an example of that tolerance and that's what I believe — that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I'm open here."

Every Revealing Thing Tom Cruise And Katie Holmes Have Said About Suri

Suri Cruise smiling, Tom Cruise sunglasses

The inception of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' romance was a dramatic era of popular culture. From Cruise's Oprah couch jumping moment to the engagement proposal on the Eiffel Tower, Cruise and Holmes became an overnight sensation, and then they welcomed a daughter together. Suri Cruise was born on April 18, 2006, and her famous father described the experience of her birth during an interview with " 20/20 ." "It was spiritual," he told the outlet. "It was powerful. It was indescribable. What words can you use? It's still something that I'm processing and keep reliving."

While Holmes and Tom seemed tight-knit for several years following Suri's birth, that all changed in 2012. Holmes' high-profile divorce from Tom Cruise  shocked fans all over the world, and since then, the " Dawson's Creek " alum has remained a committed parent to Suri. Join us as we explore everything Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have said about Suri.

Tom Cruise said Suri 'has Kate's lips and eyes'

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise welcomed their daughter, Suri Cruise, on April 18, 2006. In October 2006, the famous couple shared the first photos of Suri with the world in a Vanity Fair profile, with images taken by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz. As well as discussing their changed home life having welcomed their first baby together, Holmes and Tom also waxed lyrical about their daughter's distinctive appearance. "She has Kate's lips and eyes," Tom told the publication. "I think she looks like Kate." Holmes, meanwhile, revealed that she believed Suri resembled the "Mission: Impossible" star. "I think she has Tom's eyes," Holmes told Vanity Fair. "I think she looks like Tom."

During their Vanity Fair interview, both Holmes and Tom shared their adoration for their new baby, who had seemingly changed both of their lives immeasurably. "Having children is a new beginning ... and there's not a parent who doesn't know that moment," Tom told the publication. He also revealed that Suri held special meaning for him amidst his incredibly busy life as a film star. "...you have to celebrate the joy," he told Vanity Fair. "And that's what Suri is: the joy." Basically, the actor was over the moon to have welcomed his daughter into the world. And while fans have long discussed Suri's resemblance to Katie Holmes , it's clear that early on, she shared attributes with both her mom and her dad.

Tom Cruise called Suri a 'happy' and 'confident' child

In June 2012, Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise after five years of marriage. Their daughter, Suri Cruise, was six years old at the time. Tom's spokesperson shared a statement with the BBC , saying, "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children." As well as Suri, Tom has two adopted children — Isabella and Connor — whom he adopted with his second wife Nicole Kidman.

In November 2013, Tom was deposed while suing Bauer Publishing because of a story published by In Touch magazine, which alleged that the movie star had abandoned his daughter following his split from Holmes, via People . During the deposition, Tom admitted that there was a period of more than 100 days during which he didn't see Suri in person, which occurred between August 2012 and Thanksgiving of the same year, People reported. However, he did discuss his regular contact with Suri, revealing that having phone conversations with a young child can be challenging. "...you have to work at it," he said during the deposition, via People. "I've gotten very good at it. I tell wonderful stories." He also shared that his daughter appeared to be content in life, saying, "I also find that, you know, Suri is a very happy child, and confident, and has a good sense of herself."

The lawsuit was later settled, but articles regarding Tom's absence from Suri's life continued to surface.

Tom Cruise said 'there is no need to protect' Suri from Scientology

In November 2013, Tom Cruise attended court while suing Bauer Publishing over a story published by In Touch magazine that suggested he was absent from daughter Suri Cruise's life. As well as discussing his relationship with his child, Tom was forced to address his connection to Scientology, a religious organization founded by science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard. During his deposition, Tom explained that Suri was no longer a practicing member of Scientology (via People ). He was asked whether Katie Holmes divorced him so as to protect Suri from the religion, to which Tom replied, "I find that question offensive. There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion."

Despite begrudging intrusive questions about his faith, Tom did admit that Holmes, at least in part, filed for divorce in order to keep Suri away from Scientology. "...that was one of the assertions, yes," he said during the deposition (via People). "There are many other aspects to the divorce." The questioning didn't stop there, as Tom was also asked if Holmes and their daughter were now considered to be "suppressive persons," which is how Scientologists refer to those who have left the religion or people who openly oppose it, according to the official Scientology website . "That is a distortion and simplification of the matter," Tom replied. "I don't want to just give an oversimplification of religious doctrine."

Katie Holmes dished on 'tickle fights and glitter art' with Suri

While Tom Cruise's connection to daughter Suri Cruise was questioned following his split from Katie Holmes, the "Dawson's Creek" star publicly became a single mom, who seemingly adored raising her child. During an interview with People in November 2014, Holmes revealed that she had a very creative home life with Suri, and explained the ways in which she was a hands-on mom. "Between tickle fights and glitter art, I try to throw in some manners along the way," Holmes told People. "I try to have good manners too, so that's what she sees. I also try to be very creative with her, because I know she's an artist, and that speaks to the girl in me."

Holmes also noted that she had some limitations as a mother, namely that she wasn't invested in playing games of tag, for instance. "But I'll paint all day, I'll do the creative stuff," she explained to People. While Tom may not have seen Suri very often when she was small, Holmes seemed to throw herself into life as a single mother, and in ensuring that her daughter was happy and had lots of opportunities to express her creative side.

Katie Holmes will change plans to just to see Suri smile

While speaking to People , Katie Holmes got personal about her journey as a mother. In particular, she noted that the most important thing to her was Suri Cruise's happiness, and if that meant being flexible each day, then she was more than willing to do that. "Motherhood has taught me to just let go of some things, to relinquish control," she told the publication. "There's a playdate you weren't expecting — I've had to learn to ask myself, 'Is this worth it? Is it going to make her smile?' And if it is, then yeah, we're probably gonna do it."

Holmes also noted that most parents felt stress when trying to keep to tight schedules, and that it usually worked out better for her to just go with the flow. "I think we all need to ease up on the expectations," she continued. "We're all trying to do the best we can. Motherhood taught me that." During the same interview, she also sang the praises of gift cards, noting that they take the stress out of shopping for gifts for Suri's friends, revealing that she has a drawer full of them at home, ready for any gift giving situation that may arise. Above all, it's heartwarming to know that Holmes has always been willing to change her plans and drop everything for her daughter's happiness.

Katie Holmes values breakfast time with her 'little one'

While attending Quaker's Oatober event, Katie Holmes talked to People about Suri Cruise's eating habits, and why breakfast was an incredibly important time for the mother and daughter duo. "I like to make a nice breakfast and start the day calmly," she told the publication. "I like that time with my little one before school." Holmes also opened up about cooking for her daughter in general, and revealed how she navigates cooking meals that Suri will enjoy. "[Suri] has her favorites, like most kids," Holmes told People. "I don't really have any tactics to help [with picky eating]. I think like most parents you make the stuff you know that they like, and every once in a while you introduce something new."

Essentially, the "Batman Begins" star uses meal times to bond with her daughter. During another interview with People , Holmes revealed that she may not always be the best cook, but that time spent with Suri was the most important thing. "My main goal is to just let her know how much I love her," the mom-of-one explained. "...When that's the through line, who cares that my first two pancakes are always burned?" It would seem that Holmes focuses all of her attention on Cruise, especially when it comes to providing food for her young daughter. Through carefully curated breakfasts, and by making meals that please Cruise, Holmes is ensuring that her child feels cared for on a regular basis.

Katie Holmes protects Suri, who was 'so visible at a young age'

As the daughter of two very recognizable actors, Suri Cruise has been in the international spotlight since birth. Understandably, mother Katie Holmes has prioritized keeping her daughter safe, particularly as Suri, whose father is movie star Tom Cruise, has always been a target of the paparazzi. In 2023, Holmes opened up to Glamour about her approach to parenting a teenage girl, saying, "What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her. I'm very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She's an incredible person."

Holmes had previously discussed the topic of Suri's privacy during a 2020 interview with InStyle . The "First Daughter" star revealed that she'd stumbled across a website, which was entirely focused on photos of Suri taken when she was just a baby. "We were followed a lot when she was little," Holmes confided. "I just wanted her outside, so I would walk her around to find parks at, like, 6 in the morning when nobody would see us." However, it would seem that the paparazzi quickly gained knowledge of Holmes' early morning walks. "But there's one video where I'm holding her — she was 2 at the time — and she starts waving at the cameras," Holmes told InStyle. Luckily, though, Holmes has been looking out for Suri's safety and security since she was a baby.

Katie Holmes wanted to make sure Suri had 'a stable, innocent childhood'

In February 2017, Katie Holmes spoke to Town & Country while promoting limited television series "The Kennedys: After Camelot," in which she starred as First Lady Jackie Kennedy. While discussing her incredibly busy schedule, which includes directing projects as well as starring in them, Holmes said of daughter Suri Cruise, "My child is the most important person to me, and her upbringing is paramount to my work right now." She continued, "It's very important that I'm present and she has a stable, innocent childhood. I feel so blessed to do what I do, but there's nothing in the world better than watching your child succeed."

Holmes also noted she realized how crucial it was to be present during Cruise's formative years, especially as her daughter was growing up so fast. "Every day, kids get a little further away from you," she told Town & Country. "They should be becoming more independent, but it's heartbreaking." The actor further discussed knowing that Cruise would continue to gain independence, and that she would eventually strike out on her own as an adult. However, Holmes admitted that she already wasn't looking forward to the day that Cruise became a fully fledged grown-up. "And that's going to be very, very sad for me," the "Jack & Jill" star told continued.

Katie Holmes included Suri Cruise in her films 'because she's my heart'

After building a successful acting career, Katie Holmes decided to move into directing. In 2015, she directed a short film called "Eternal Princess," which she followed up with her full-length directorial debut, "All We Had," in 2016. Next up, she directed an episode of the miniseries "The Kennedys: Decline and Fall" in 2017, before moving back to directing movies with 2022's "Alone Together" and 2023's "Rare Objects." In taking on an even more creative role in the film industry, Holmes realized that she had the opportunity to showcase her daughter's talents, too.

During her 2023 interview with Glamour , Holmes opened up about her decision to include daughter Suri Cruise's music in her movies "Alone Together" and "Rare Objects." "I hope she always does something on my films," Holmes told Glamour. "I always ask her." By including Cruise's music in two of her own movies, Holmes was able to showcase her daughter's musical talent with a wide audience, which is pretty special. "So it comes out of love for me to include someone who I love dearly," Holmes explained to Glamour. "That's how I like to work. I like to have that kind of feeling. It was very meaningful to me to have her there, because she's my heart." Judging by Holmes' glowing comments, it sounds as though the mother daughter duo will likely work together again in the not-too-distant future.

Katie Holmes' bond with Suri is 'the most precious gift'

Since Katie Holmes finalized her divorce from Tom Cruise in July 2012, she has been a single mother to the couple's daughter Suri Cruise. Holmes and Suri live in New York together, and it would appear as though they have positively thrived as a twosome. In November 2020, Katie Holmes wrote an essay for Vogue Australia in which she discussed quarantining with her daughter during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. "Hobbies such as sewing, painting and writing became new hallmarks of satisfaction and having had time at home to just be," Holmes wrote. "To listen. To live for a moment in time without the pressure of results and instead appreciate the natural rhythms of mother and daughter was the most precious gift." Seemingly, Holmes relished the opportunity to spend time with her daughter, and despite the difficult circumstances, she managed to find some positives in the situation.

The "Logan Lucky" star gave further insight into the time she spent with Suri during the pandemic while speaking with the Australian version of The Daily Telegraph in August 2020 (via Yahoo! News ). "I like to keep her out of my interviews, but I will say that this time of quarantine has been such a lesson," Holmes explained. " Just really looking at everything you have and celebrating the simplicity of making dinner and [spending] that time together." Basically, Holmes' bond with Suri is incredibly strong.

Katie Holmes called Suri 'the sweetest daughter' and 'very talented'

Although Katie Holmes seems to keep much of her personal life private, the "Ray Donovan" actor has shared some special messages to her daughter, Suri Cruise, on social media over the years. In April 2020, Holmes shared an Instagram photo of some birthday party decorations, which she captioned, "Happy Birthday Sweetheart!!!!!!!" She continued, "I am so blessed to be your mom. May this year be incredible!" In May 2021, Holmes celebrated her daughter once again in an adorable Mother's Day post on Instagram . Sharing a photo of herself kissing a young Cruise on the cheek, Holmes wrote, "I am so grateful to be a mom to the sweetest daughter."

While promoting her 2022 movie "Alone Together," Holmes happily discussed the inclusion of Cruise's rendition of the classic song "Blue Moon" in the film. "She's very talented," Holmes said of her daughter during an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment . "She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing." Holmes regularly makes her adoration of her daughter very clear, and her willingness to occasionally discuss Cruise's talents in interviews is super sweet.

Suri Cruise 'had a good laugh' watching Dawson's Creek

Katie Holmes found almost instant fame thanks to her role as Joey Potter on teen drama "Dawson's Creek," which aired for six seasons between 1998 and 2003. The series followed a group of friends living in the town of Capeside, a fictitious location meant to be in Massachusetts, but actually filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina. Much of the series revolved around Joey's love life, and her romantic relationships with both Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek) and Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson). Although the series finished two decades ago, it has remained a topic of conversation in the years since. As a result, it's totally unsurprising that Holmes' daughter Suri Cruise became interested in her mom's role on the iconic show.

During a 2023 interview with Variety , Holmes got candid about Cruise's knowledge of the show that launched her mother's dextrous career. "She has seen 'Dawson's Creek,' and I think it's probably weird since she's a teenager," Holmes told the publication. "I'm not like, 'You need to watch mommy's work.' But during the pandemic, we had a good laugh about it." Holmes also reflected on the fact that her daughter had entered her teenage years. "It's wild to have a daughter who's almost the same age as I was when I began all this," Holmes, who started filming "Dawson's Creek" when she was 18, explained.

Katie Holmes says she and Suri Cruise 'grew up together'

Following her 2012 divorce from Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes moved into a new apartment in New York City with daughter Suri Cruise, of whom she was awarded sole custody, according to the Daily Mail . Since then, Holmes and Suri have remained in New York, with the youngster reportedly attending elite private schools in the city. Despite leaving her marriage, Holmes appeared to be completely content becoming a single mom, and cultivating a close relationship with Suri. "I was happy to become a mom in my twenties," Holmes told ELLE U.K. (via People ) in 2019.

Holmes also enthused that she'd only gotten closer to daughter Suri as time had gone on. "It's been nice that our ages fit," she told ELLE U.K. "Every age that my child has been and my age at that time has been a good match." The actor also reflected on her experience raising her daughter, telling the publication, "We kind of grew up together." It would appear as though Holmes and Suri have experienced multiple milestones together, generating an even closer mother and daughter bond as a result.

Suri Cruise has 'always been a strong personality,' says Katie Holmes

With superstar parents like Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, Suri Cruise has had a unique upbringing. During a 2022 interview with InStyle , Holmes reflected on Suri's character, saying, "My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality." She continued, "To make sure she is 100 percent herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it." According to Holmes, Suri has been distinctive since birth, with the mother telling InStyle, "She came out very strong — she's always been a strong personality."

During the same interview, Holmes noted that her daughter was growing up, which allowed her more time to develop movie projects and move into directing. "Suri is 14, so we've gotten through the sort of girlie stage," the "Pieces of April" star told InStyle. It would seem that Suri is following in her mother's footsteps, after finding a creative outlet for her musical talents in Holmes' films. Without a doubt, fans of the mother and daughter duo will likely have their fingers crossed that many more collaborations between the pair will occur in the future.

Someone Wanted to See Me?

By Jane Sarkin

Image may contain Human Person Outdoors Nature and Wilderness

I am sitting in Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’s bedroom with his children Isabella, 13, and Connor, 11. For a good part of a week now, I’ve been ensconced at their 400-acre retreat in Telluride, Colorado. During that time I’ve become virtually a part of the extended Cruise family. For every activity, I’m a welcomed tagalong: riding horses, hiking in the hills, driving through the countryside. Every day, all day, I observe Katie and Tom taking on their latest roles—as the Ultimate Hands-On Mom and Dad to their baby girl, Suri Cruise, born April 18.

We eat almost every meal together: Tom and Katie, the kids, Tom’s mom, Mary Lee, and his sister Cass and her children, along with many of Katie’s family members—15 Holmeses in all—including her parents, Martin and Kathleen, and her brother and sisters and their kids, who have come from Ohio for a summer visit. (Also on hand are photographer Annie Leibovitz, a small crew, and Vanity Fair’ s fashion and style director, Michael Roberts.)

The kids and I flop around in the master bedrooom, making jokes, chatting, and just hanging. If Bella and Connor (adopted when Tom was married to Nicole Kidman) were slightly younger, or if these were any other children in America, I think I’d have a remarkable bedtime story to tell them—a parable about family, privacy, and fame in an age of media overload.

It would not be a story about Tom Cruise’s film career or the specifics of Scientology. Instead, I would tell them a story about a beautiful baby girl. I would relate the curious chronicle of how a three-and-a-half-month-old (now going on five months)—previously unseen by the media—became so sought after by the prying public eye that her first pictures have metamorphosed from a collection of family photos into a bona fide pop-culture event. And I would tell them how it feels to live 24-7 inside a story about a story.

Each morning the family wakes up in a room dominated by large windows with a stunning view of the Rockies. Bella and Connor, their hair mussed, arise from their red flannel sheets and stumble across the room from their mattresses, which are laid out in the master suite (due to the abundance of houseguests). The kids make their way into the king-size bed with Tom, Katie, and Suri, crawling over a quilt that Katie has made for Tom, which incorporates family photos in the patchwork. Most mornings, everyone tries to be the first to pick up the baby from her crib or to offer her a morning bottle.

Lining the walls of the stairway leading up to the bedroom are photos of the children as well as pictures from Tom and Katie’s first year together. In June of 2005, within eight weeks of their first date, he famously proposed to her atop the Eiffel Tower, overlooking the lights of Paris at night. Before asking her to marry him, he got down on one knee and recited a two-page poem he had written. (They have not yet finalized their wedding plans.)

Today, as every day, Mom and Dad are cooing about Suri, born seven pounds seven ounces, 20 inches in length, replete with what appears to be her father’s famous helmet of dark-brown hair.

“She has Kate’s lips and eyes,” says Tom. (Others call her Katie.) “I think she looks like Kate.”

“I think she has Tom’s eyes,” Katie says. “I think she looks like Tom.”

They sound like any other doting new parents. “The moment the doctor handed me Suri,” Katie insists, “I was just ready. The feeling is indescribable. All I can say is the moment I looked in her eyes I felt like … Mom.”

Suri was born exactly one year, to the day, after Tom and Katie went on their first date. “She’s a glorious girl,” Katie says. “She’s the miracle of our life.”

Soon, talk turns to the pregnancy and to Katie’s inkling, at the time, that she might be having a girl.

“I was craving pink the whole nine months,” she says.

In fact, even before an ultrasound test had determined that a girl was on the way, the parents-to-be had settled on her name. “We had the name before we found out because we both thought the baby would be a girl,” says Tom. “Some friends of ours sent us two [baby-naming] books. When we came to the name Suri, we both loved it. And we both said, ‘Suri Cruise.’ We later found out that it meant ‘red rose,’ and that was just a bonus. Suri—it was perfect.”

The house has the feel of a sprawling lodge or chalet, with rustic, log-cabin touches—informal, airy, built with honey-colored deadwood from Oregon. The family room has a vast stone fireplace made by local craftsmen. The Cruises spend long hours in the kitchen, dining room, and living room. There is a guesthouse, called “the bunkhouse,” set, like the main quarters, amid stands of aspen, which residents call “quakies.” The white bark of the trees has been rubbed dark brown by herds of wandering elk. Around the grounds are a sleep-in tepee and an in-ground trampoline. Tom, who began planning his refuge in 1990, has now realized his dream of having a getaway in the mountains, a home filled with family and friends, a place where he can raise his children. “My whole life I always wanted to be a father,” Tom says. “I always said to myself that my children would be able to depend on me and I would always be there for them and love them—that I’d never make a promise to my kids that I couldn’t keep. I’m not one of those people who believe you can spoil a child with too much love. You can never give a child too much love. There’s just no way.”

The Cruise athleticism and competitive spirit are everywhere in evidence. The kids, with Dad in the lead, roar around their homemade motocross track. Katie, Tom, and the family ride horses, fish, exercise, hike—and play round after round of Take Two, a quick-paced crossword-style game, using Scrabble tiles. Tom seems proud to have encouraged his kids to share in his need for speed. Meanwhile, many of the relatives are off flying over the mountains in sleek white gliders. Tom takes the opportunity to fit in a round of golf with his future father-in-law and various Holmes men.

Many nights there’s a cookout at the family’s favorite spot, simply called the Lookout, with its commanding view of Wilson Peak. Everyone assembles at the fire pit, its stones stacked and shaped by the children. The family gathers around the fire and talks, trading stories while sitting on hewn-timber benches. One night it’s hot dogs and s’mores; another night, back at the house, a barbecue is followed by 39 flavors of ice cream.

Attention and talk, nowadays, seem to naturally gravitate to Suri.

Early on, Tom’s publicists asked the couple if they wanted to release a single picture of her just to get the media off their backs. They understood that the scoop-starved public felt it was owed a look at the baby. But, for the first three months of Suri’s life, Tom and Katie say, they just wanted to be new parents. They kept to themselves in Los Angeles: having friends over, including Penélope Cruz and Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith; ordering takeout food from local restaurants; and forgoing the intrusion that any photo session would surely have brought. “She was born,” Katie recounts, “as M.I.3 [ Mission: Impossible III ] was coming out, and once Tom was finished promoting the film, all we wanted to do was spend time with Suri and our family and friends. We were always going to release a photo. We just didn’t want to get into the whole production of setting up a photo shoot at that time. I really just wanted to enjoy this precious time with my daughter. I knew I’d never get that time back.”

“We were just living our lives, being a family,” Tom contends. “Actually, we were taking our own photos and always planned to release those at the right time.”

“Then all the craziness began,” Katie recalls. “This ‘Where is Suri?’ controversy. Tom and I looked at each other and said, ‘What’s going on?’ We weren’t trying to hide anything.”

Tom and Katie wanted no part of the feeding frenzy. While all this bizarre speculation was going on, I repeatedly asked for the first photo session with the baby, receiving polite refusals. During the same period, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie released images of their new daughter, Shiloh, donating the proceeds to charity. (Tom and Katie chose not to link Suri’s first photo session to anything financial—even though they praise their fellow stars’ decision. Tom contributes extensively to charitable causes but declines to draw attention to such donations.) Finally, in late July, I got a call. The pair had decided to have Suri Cruise make her debut in Vanity Fair. Could Annie Leibovitz and I come to Telluride the following week?

Annie and I flew out, spending our days and nights at the compound to limit any suspicions among the paparazzi around town. And for five days Tom and Katie willingly posed for family pictures without complaint. At one point, Tom actually compared the mood to what he’s been told about photographer-reporter teams covering celebrities in the 40s, 50s, and 60s for the weekly Life magazine: hanging with a star for a week, no holds barred.

The family piles into the S.U.V., James Blunt blaring on the iPod hooked up to its speakers. Tom and Katie belt out the lyrics: “My life is brilliant / My love is pure. / I saw an angel. / Of that I’m sure.… / You’re beautiful, it’s true.”

Up into the mountains they go, to the fire pit, where the photo crew is assembled.

Annie gathers Tom, Katie, and Suri on the hillside, ready to shoot a portrait of just the three of them. (The image will become the cover photograph.)

The other family members observe the scene from behind Annie as she focuses her cameras. Soon, a breathtaking sunset descends on the southwest ridges of Wilson Peak, Gladstone Peak, Sunshine Peak, and volcano-coned Lizard Head, which the Cruises have climbed together.

Tom’s mother, an upbeat, outgoing woman from Louisville, Kentucky, moves in closer. She watches her son and daughter-in-law-to-be kiss. She sees her granddaughter Suri smile for the camera. The sun reddens the peaks in the distance. Tom’s mom begins to cry. Others on the hillside start to well up, too.

Tom seems to be forcing back the tears himself. Later, as we talk about the poignancy of that moment, I mention how the sunset photo session seemed to belie a line from his film Jerry Maguire. “We live in a cynical world,” Tom’s character says, “a cynical world.” Tom nods in agreement, although he thinks that in some ways that statement is even more true today. “I am very fortunate to have the life that I have, and I know that,” he says. “Life does deal out its percentage of—its amount of sorrow. But those moments help you appreciate the joy of life and to recognize that. We’ll never forget the bad times, you know, but you have to celebrate the joy. And that’s what Suri is: the joy.

“Having children is a new beginning,” Tom continues, “and there’s not a parent who doesn’t know that moment and think back to their children and their grandchildren and reflect on the cycle of life.”

Katie says she wants to talk with me privately.

We discuss how she’s begun to read filmscripts again. (She has appeared on TV’s Dawson’s Creek and in 13 feature films, including The Ice Storm, Pieces of April, Thank You for Smoking, and Batman Begins. ) We discuss her jewelry, and I suggest that whatever she has on in the photos, and at her upcoming wedding, could inspire a fashion craze. She wears a trinity ring made of three types of gold, set with diamonds, that Tom gave her for Mother’s Day, a pair of light-pink diamond-drop earrings, a gift when Suri was born, and a diamond engagement ring surrounded by smaller pink diamonds.

She opens up about the hurtful articles and TV coverage, which she admits she follows.

“I do know what is being said in the press,” she says, explaining that she keeps up on the gossip because “this is my future. This is my family, and I care so much about them. The stories are not O.K. It eats away at me because it’s just not O.K. To see how someone as caring and good as Tom is—to see how things can just get so twisted and turned around. I mean, where does it come from? It’s been heartbreaking to see that.

“I know he’s more used to it than I am. I was overjoyed in being pregnant and then had to withstand ridicule about my pregnancy when it was the most normal, non-controversial thing imaginable. All those things were invented,” she asserts. About the rumor that they had purchased ultrasound equipment to personally monitor the child from their own home, she says, “All that garbage about the sonogram [machine]—we were followed by paparazzi and so my doctor had to make house calls. The sonogram was for his use!

“Some of the crap that’s out there—the stuff that’s said about my parents and my siblings [tabloid accounts implied that Katie’s family did not hit it off with Tom]—it’s really frustrating the amount of shit that’s out there. And the stuff they said about Suri?! You shouldn’t say that about us, and you can’t say that about my child. As a mother, you hear it and it’s just not O.K.”

One night around the dining-room table, during a Chinese-and-Thai dinner, there are stories upon stories exchanged about Tom and Katie as children. Soon, talk turns to Tom’s adventures with Connor and Bella and all the things they want to do with Suri when she gets older.

Katie observes, “It’s really special to see them [Bella and Connor] holding their little sister. To hear them talk about all of the fun things they are going to do together.” Tom adds, “It’s very moving to me too. I look at those moments of watching Bella and Connor grow up and you get a sense of what kind of people they are going to be as adults.”

At one point Tom discusses plans for taking Connor and Bella on a climb up Mount Kilimanjaro. And a batch of fortune cookies is passed around. We all read ours aloud.

Tom unfurls his fortune and smiles.

“Soon,” it says, “you will be on top of the world.”

We laugh. From the looks of things, he’s already there.

Cruise, Holmes Welcome Baby Suri

April 18, 2006 / 7:32 PM EDT / CBS/AP

The silent birth heard around the world has finally happened.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, the public lovebirds dubbed TomKat by the media, had a baby girl Tuesday, said Cruise spokesman Arnold Robinson.

Suri Cruise came into the world at 7 pounds, 7 ounces and 20 inches long. Her name has its origins in Hebrew, meaning "princess," or in Persian, meaning "red rose," Robinson said in a statement.

"Both mother and daughter are doing well," the publicist said.

People magazine's editor-at-large Jess Cagle tells CBS News' The Early Show that Suri was born in a hospital. Despite all of the media surrounding Cruise's home in Beverly Hills, the couple were able to leave the house, get to the hospital, and come back home without anyone knowing, Cagle says.

Details about the birth weren't disclosed, but it had been planned to take place as a silent procedure under the tenants of the Church of Scientology, to which both Cruise and Holmes belong.

Scientologists believe words spoken during times of pain are recorded by the "reactive mind" and can cause potential problems for both mother and child.

Suri's birth generated a huge noise among the world of Cruise-Holmes watchers.

"Yay, yay, yay," said actress and fellow Scientologist Kirstie Alley. "Bring her over so I can meet her."

"Tonight Show" host Jay Leno announced the birth to his studio audience.

"I just got a phone call that Tom Cruise had a baby girl about two minutes ago. No joke," he said.

Suri is the 27-year-old actress' first child. Cruise, 43, has an adopted daughter and son with his ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

In an ironic twist of fate, Suri was born on the same day actress Brooke Shields gave birth to her daughter Grier Hammond Henchy . Shields and Cruise had a public spat last year after he criticized the actress for taking antidepressants following the birth of her first child.

Cruise said depression can be treated with exercise and vitamins rather than drugs. Shields dismissed the actor's remarks as a "ridiculous rant," adding it appeared obvious he had never suffered from postpartum depression.

There were no signs of depression at the Beverly Hills home of Cruise and Holmes on Tuesday, where about a dozen reporters and photographers stood outside the gates and a steady stream of tourists and curious passers-by stopped to take a look. Some visitors left baby gifts outside the gate, which was shrouded in black to keep anyone from peering inside.

A police motorcycle officer stopped in the late afternoon to watch the goings-on. The patrolman, who identified himself as Officer Chase, said he was making a routine check because there had been heightened activity around the area.

He asked if Holmes had given birth yet and, told she had, he drove off.

Meanwhile, a publicity blitz for the new Cruise movie "Mission: Impossible III," which was to begin Wednesday, has been put on hold. The actor has canceled all press appearances, according to Paramount Studios.

It was just about a year ago that Cruise's romance with Holmes became a worldwide sensation.

The actor hopped up and down on a couch during an interview with Oprah Winfrey as he professed his love.

"I can't be cool. I can't be laid-back," Cruise declared at the time. "Something happened and I want to celebrate it."

The antics were widely mocked but Cruise was unfazed and continued to display his affection for the star of TV's "Dawson's Creek."

The couple were first photographed together in Rome in April 2005. Two months later, Cruise announced he had proposed to Holmes atop the Eiffel Tower.

"Today is a magnificent day for me, I'm engaged to a magnificent woman," he said.

No wedding date has been disclosed.

Holmes was previously been engaged to actor Chris Klein. Cruise, previously married to Mimi Rogers and Kidman, also had a high-profile romance with Penelope Cruz.

Who Is Tom Cruise?

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, better known as Tom Cruise, was born on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York, to Mary and Thomas Mapother. Cruise's mother was an amateur actress and schoolteacher, and his father was an electrical engineer. His family moved around a great deal when Cruise was a child to accommodate his father's career.

Cruise's parents divorced when he was 11, and the children moved with their mother to Louisville, Kentucky, and then to Glen Ridge, New Jersey, after she remarried. Like his mother and three sisters, Cruise suffered from dyslexia, which made academic success difficult for him. He excelled in athletics, however, and considered pursuing a career in professional wrestling until a knee injury sidelined him during high school.

At age 14, Cruise enrolled in a Franciscan seminary with thoughts of becoming a priest, but he left after a year. When he was 16, a teacher encouraged him to participate in the school's production of the musical Guys and Dolls . After Cruise won the lead of Nathan Detroit, he found himself surprisingly at home on the stage, and a career was born.

'Taps,' 'The Outsiders'

Cruise set a 10-year deadline for himself in which to build an acting career. He left school and moved to New York City, struggling through audition after audition before landing an appearance in 1981's Endless Love , starring Brooke Shields. Around this same time, he snagged a small role in the military school drama Taps (1981), co-starring Sean Penn .

His role in Taps was upgraded after director Harold Becker saw Cruise's potential, and his performance caught the attention of a number of critics and filmmakers. In 1983, Cruise appeared in Francis Ford Coppola 's The Outsiders , which also starred Emilio Estevez , Matt Dillon and Rob Lowe —all prominent members of a group of young actors the entertainment press dubbed the "Brat Pack." The film was not well received, but it allowed Cruise to work with an acclaimed director on a high-profile project.

'Risky Business'

His next film, Risky Business (1983), grossed $65 million. It also made Cruise a highly recognizable actor — thanks in no small part to a memorable scene of the young star dancing in his underwear.

In 1986, after a two-year hiatus, the budding actor released the big-budget fantasy film Legend , which did poorly at the box office. That same year, however, Cruise's A-list status was confirmed with the release of Top Gun , which co-starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan . The testosterone-fueled action-romance, set against the backdrop of an elite naval flight school, became the highest-grossing film of 1986.

'The Color of Money,' 'Rain Man' and 'Born on the Fourth of July'

Cruise followed the tremendous success of Top Gun with a string of both critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. He first starred in The Color of Money (1986) with co-star Paul Newman , and then went on to work with Dustin Hoffman on Rain Man (1988). Cruise's next role, as Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic in the biopic Born on the Fourth of July (1989), earned him an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Actor.

'A Few Good Men,' 'The Firm' and 'Interview with a Vampire'

In 1992, Cruise proved once more that he could hold his own opposite a screen legend when he co-starred with Jack Nicholson in the military courtroom drama A Few Good Men . The film grossed more than $15 million its first weekend and earned Cruise a Golden Globe nomination. He continued to demonstrate his success as a leading man with The Firm (1993) and Interview with a Vampire (1994), which co-starred Brad Pitt.

'Mission: Impossible,' 'Jerry McGuire'

Next, Cruise hit the big screen with two huge hits—the $64 million blockbuster Mission: Impossible (1996), which the star also produced, and the highly acclaimed Jerry McGuire (1996), directed by Cameron Crowe. For the latter, Cruise earned a second Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe for Best Actor.

'Eyes Wide Shut,' 'Magnolia'

Cruise and then-wife Kidman spent much of 1997 and 1998 in England shooting Eyes Wide Shut , an erotic thriller that would be director Stanley Kubrick 's final film. The movie came out in the summer of 1999 to mixed reviews, but that year Cruise enjoyed greater success with the release of Magnolia . His performance as a self-confident sex guru in the ensemble film earned him another Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

'Vanilla Sky,' 'The Last Samurai'

Cruise then starred in the long-awaited smash hit Mission: Impossible 2 in 2000, alongside Anthony Hopkins , Thandie Newton and Ving Rhames. In 2002, he starred in Vanilla Sky , his second collaboration with Crowe, as well as Steven Spielberg 's Minority Report . The following year, Cruise traveled to Australia to shoot the $100 million war epic The Last Samurai, which earned him another Golden Globe nomination.

'War of the Worlds'

Cruise proved he remained a top draw by starring in the Spielberg-directed remake of the science-fiction classic War of the Worlds (2005), which grossed more than $230 million at the box office.

His next effort, Mission: Impossible 3 (2006), also scored well with audiences. However, Cruise was faced with a professional setback in August when Paramount Pictures ended its 14-year relationship with the actor. The company's chairman cited Cruise's erratic behavior and controversial views as the reason for the split, though industry experts noted that Paramount more likely ended the partnership over Cruise's high earnings from the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Cruise quickly rebounded and on November 2, 2006, he announced his new partnership with film executive Paula Wagner and the United Artists film studio. Their first production as a team, the political drama Lions for Lambs (2007), proved a commercial disappointment despite a strong cast that included Meryl Streep and Robert Redford .

'Tropic Thunder'

Taking a break from weighty material, Cruise delighted audiences with his performance in the comedy Tropic Thunder (2008). Despite his relatively small role in a movie that featured Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Stiller , Cruise stood out by obscuring his trademark good looks to play a balding, obese movie studio executive.

'Valkyrie,' 'Rock of Ages'

In December 2008, Cruise released his second project through United Artists. The film, Valkyrie , was a World War II drama about a plot to assassinate German leader Adolf Hitler . Cruise starred as a German army officer who became involved in the conspiracy.

Cruise returned to one of his most popular franchises in 2011 with Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol . Breaking into new territory, he then starred in the 2012 musical Rock of Ages . Although Cruise received some positive reviews for his performance as a rock star, the movie failed to attract much of an audience.

'Jack Reacher,' 'Edge of Tomorrow'

Returning to his mainstream action roots, Cruise starred in the 2012 crime drama Jack Reacher , based on a book by Lee Child. He then headlined a pair of science-fiction adventures, Oblivion (2013) and Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Showing no signs of slowing down, the veteran actor in 2015 delivered his usual high-energy performance for the fifth installment of his blockbuster franchise, Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation .

Latest Movies and Familiar Franchises

In 2016, Cruise reprised the role of Jack Reacher for Never Go Back . He then headlined a reboot of The Mummy (2017), which performed respectably at the box office but was savaged by critics, before earning better reviews later that year for the crime thriller American Made .

2018 brought a return to familiar territory for Cruise, who starred in Mission Impossible —Fallout that summer. Prior to its release, he tweeted a photo to mark day 1 of production on the long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick , scheduled for a June 2020 release.

Scientology and Personal Life

Cruise married actress Mimi Rogers in 1987. It was through Rogers that the actor became a student of Scientology, the religion founded by writer L. Ron Hubbard. Cruise credited the church with curing his dyslexia, and he soon became one of its leading proponents. However, while his spiritual life flourished, his marriage to Rogers ended in 1990. That same year, Cruise made the racecar drama Days of Thunder alongside Kidman. Though the movie was unpopular among critics and fans alike, the two lead actors had real chemistry. On Christmas Eve 1990, after a brief courtship, Cruise and Kidman married in Telluride, Colorado.

Divorce from Kidman

For much of the 1990s, Cruise and Kidman found themselves fiercely defending the happiness and legitimacy of their marriage. They filed two different lawsuits against tabloid publications for stories they considered libelous. In each case, the couple received a published retraction and apology, along with a large monetary settlement which they donated to charity. The couple has two children, Isabella and Connor.

On February 5, 2001, Cruise and Kidman announced their separation after 11 years of marriage. The couple cited the difficulties involved with two acting careers and the amount of time spent apart while working. Following the divorce, Cruise briefly dated his Vanilla Sky co-star Penelope Cruz , followed by a much-publicized relationship with actress Katie Holmes. A month after his ties to Holmes became public, Cruise professed his love for the actress in a now-famous appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, during which he jumped on Winfrey's sofa, shouting "Yes!"

Marriage to Katie Holmes

In June 2005, after a two-month courtship, Cruise proposed to Holmes in a restaurant at the top of the Eiffel tower. In October, they announced that they were expecting their first child together. The hasty proposal and surprise pregnancy quickly became tabloid gossip. But Cruise made even bigger headlines that year as an outspoken advocate for Scientology. He openly criticized former co-star Brooke Shields for using anti-depressants during her recovery from postpartum depression. He also denounced psychiatry and modern medicine, claiming Scientology held the key to true healing. Cruise's statements led to a heated argument with news anchor Matt Lauer on The Today Show in June 2005, for which Cruise later apologized.

In 2006, Cruise and Holmes welcomed daughter Suri into the world. That year, they were married in an Italian castle, with celebrities Will Smith , Jada Pinkett Smith , Jennifer Lopez and Victoria and David Beckham among those in attendance. However, the storybook romance wouldn't last, and in June 2012, the couple announced their separation.

Brooke Shields Blasts ‘Ridiculous’ Tom Cruise Battle Over Postpartum Depression as Sundance Showers Her New Doc With a Standing Ovation

“Pretty Baby,” a two-part documentary about the intense highs and lows of American icon Brooke Shields , brought the house down with its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday.

The doc explores the appalling sexualization of Shields beginning at age 9, the top-tier modeling and acting career that followed, and the urgent conversations she inspires around what society expects of women.

“I’ve always made it an important part of my journey to be as honest as I could. Not just to the outside, but to myself,” Shields said during a Q&A following the premiere of the doc, which received a standing ovation. “I didn’t want to become shut down. The industry I’m in primes you to be shut down. I didn’t want to lose to that.”

An interesting mix of taking heads from her life populate the doc to offer insights. Childhood friend Laura Linney, Lionel Richie, Ali Wentworth, and security czar Gavin de Becker all pop up. Drew Barrymore, sitting cross-legged and barefoot on a stool, corroborated the confusion and difficulties that come with child stardom. A particularly cringey moment came during a section on “Blue Lagoon,” the landmark movie about virile teenagers in love on a deserted island. Director Randal Kleiser, the doc alleges, actively built a narrative in the press that Shields was coming of age sexually in real time with her character.

“They wanted to make it a reality show,” Shields said. “They wanted to sell my sexual awakening.”

Perhaps, the work suggests, this is why Shields broke her white-hot career streak to attend Princeton University.

“Brooke insisted on getting agency over her mind, over her career, over her future. I found it remarkable and very contemporary in so many ways,” Wilson told the audience.

After marrying now-husband Chris Henchy, Shields struggled with conception. After many attempts, she delivered daughter Rowan and immediately slipped into an unknown and extreme depression. In 2005, she authored the book “Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression.”

At the same time Shields was promoting the book, Tom Cruise was making the rounds for his Steven Spielberg-directed action film “War of the Worlds.” Cruise, the most famous member of the therapy and prescription drug averse Church of Scientology, publicly went after Shields for promoting antidepressants. He went as far as calling her “dangerous.”

In the doc, Shields reflected on the incident as “ridiculous.”

During one scene of the documentary, the camera zooms in on the headline “What Tom Cruise Doesn’t Know About Estrogen,” from a New York Times op-ed she wrote in response to Cruise. The Eccles applauded in delight, and did so again after actor Judd Nelson quotes his friend Shields at the time: “Tom Cruise should stick to fighting aliens.”

Doctors not fans of Tom Cruise's baby gift

US Actor Tom Cruise arrives with his gir

Obstetricians across the country are hoping that Tom Cruise will decide to back out of his latest acting gig — ultrasound technician.

In a recent television interview for Barbara Walters' annual show on the year’s most fascinating people, Cruise said he has purchased an ultrasound machine to use during the pregnancy of girlfriend Katie Holmes.

He said medical technicians are helping the couple use the device and that they will donate it to a hospital after the baby is born.

Ultrasounds, or sonograms, have been widely used during pregnancy since the 1970s. To obtain images of the fetus, obstetricians or technicians — many of whom complete 18 months of training in the practice — use a transducer to send a stream of high-frequency sound waves into the body and detect their echoes as they bounce off internal structures. The sound waves are then converted to electric impulses that are processed to form an image displayed on a computer monitor.

Safety concerns Sonograms have become standard practice in many obstetrics practices to help doctors and parents learn important information about the fetus before birth, including size, position in the uterus and even the presence of some birth defects.

Experts say no significant health risks to a baby who has undergone ultrasound at the low levels approved for obstetrics use have been shown. According to the Food and Drug Administration, which must approve ultrasound devices before they are sold in the United States, the only consistent finding has been a slight increase in left-handedness among boys.

But according to the American College of Radiology, which offers guidelines on sonography, laboratory studies have shown that some levels of ultrasound can produce physical effects in tissue, such as vibrations and a rise in temperature, especially when used for a prolonged period of time.

In response to Cruise’s personal tech acquisition, the ACR issued a release saying the group supports the view of the FDA that fetal ultrasound be performed only for medical purposes, by certified technologists and with a prescription from a physician.

ACR president Dr. Carol Rumack says she is concerned that a potential problem could be missed or that something routine could be misinterpreted as a problem, causing unneeded worry for the parents. Another worry is that the fetus could be exposed to a greater intensity of sound waves than recommended.

The FDA says that while prenatal sonograms are generally done at very low power levels, current machines, which range in price from $15,000 to $200,000, can produce sound wave intensities eight times higher than a decade ago and at that level, especially if used for prolonged periods, there could be a real risk to the developing fetus.

"We have no idea what kind of machine Tom Cruise purchased,’’ says Dr. Joshua Copel, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Yale University.

The actor’s publicist says Cruise has no further comment on the matter.

Not just "for fun" The FDA has investigated non-medically supervised ultrasound exams over the last few years because of the proliferation of "sonogram studios," many in shopping malls across the country with names such as "Fetal Fotos" and "Womb with a View."

In fact, Cruise’s purchase may even be illegal. In 2002, the FDA said that anyone conducting ultrasound testing without a medical prescription from a physician is breaking the law.

But doctors also acknowledge that Cruise’s purchase is likely just anticipation run amok. "I think his decision is well-intentioned, but misguided,’’ says Dr. Michael Ross, chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, Calif. "Using the equipment for fun is not what it’s intended for.’’

Copel agrees: "If  Mr. Cruise and Ms. Holmes want their child to be a film star, they should wait until he or she is born."

Tom Cruise Seen Sprinting Down Street in London as He Shoots Next Mission: Impossible Movie

The eighth 'Mission: Impossible' film, which does not yet have a title, is expected in theaters May 23, 2025

Mega / Dean - Click News And Media / SplashNews.com

Tom Cruise is showing no signs of slowing down in the next Mission: Impossible movie.

On Sunday, Cruise, 61, was seen sprinting down a street in London while filming a scene for the upcoming eighth film in his signature action franchise. The actor could be seen wearing a black suit with a white shirt opened at the top, with fake blood drenched over his chest while filming the sequence.

Cruise most recently appeared as his Mission: Impossible character Ethan Hunt in last year's Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning , which made $172 million at the  domestic box office . Dead Reckoning also earned the franchise its first-ever Academy Award nominations when it received nods for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound at the recent 96th Oscars ceremony.

A title for the upcoming eighth Mission: Impossible movie has not yet been announced. The next film was originally set for release on June 28, but production delays related to 2023's SAG-AFTRA strike forced the film to restart production in the fall and delay its release until May 23, 2025, as Deadline reported back in October.

Dead Reckoning left Cruise's character Ethan Hunt and series regulars Luther (Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg) at odds with villain Gabriel (Esai Morales) and forging new alliances with characters like Grace (Hayley Atwell) over a battle for control over a sentient artificial intelligence.

The eighth Mission: Impossible film is just one movie among a number of projects Cruise has in development. In February, PEOPLE confirmed Cruise will star in the next movie from The Revenant filmmaker  Alejandro G. Iñárritu , while The Hollywood Reporter  reported in January that Paramount is developing Top Gun 3 as a sequel to Cruise's major 2022 success Top Gun: Maverick .

Cruise, known for his penchant for performing his own stunts, was recently seen climbing the iconic Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles' Hollywood Hills on March 16 accompanied by a film crew. A representative for Cruise did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment Monday. While it's unclear what Cruise was filming on Saturday, the stunt did not appear related to the next Mission: Impossible film.

Mission: Impossible 8 is expected in theaters May 23, 2025.
