The Best USB Car Charger

Our three top picks for best USB car charger, shown in a line against a pink background.

By Nick Guy

For a few bucks, a good USB car charger can charge your phone and other devices faster than the port that came in your car. After testing more than 60 models, we’ve determined that the best car charger is the dual-port Nekteck PD 45W Type-C Car Charger . You can fast-charge phones, tablets, and laptops on its USB-C port and simultaneously charge a second phone on its USB-A port. No other charger offers as much power for a better price.

Scosche PowerVolt PD40 (CPDCC40)

The best car charger with two usb-c ports.

If you want to have the fastest charge possible on two modern devices—such as an iPhone 8 or later, or a Samsung Galaxy S8 or later—this is your best bet. But you need to bring your own USB-C cables.

ZMI PowerCruise C2 36-Watt Dual USB Car Charger with QC 3.0

A great, inexpensive charger.

Though ZMI’s dual-port charger doesn’t charge as quickly as USB-C chargers, it does provide the fastest USB-A power possible, in a nice metal package and at a low price.

Compared with the familiar USB-A port, the smaller USB-C port can charge most modern phones faster (if you’re using the right cable) and can even charge tablets and laptops. And the Nekteck PD 45W Type-C Car Charger provides the best of both worlds. When you’re using a USB-C–to–Lightning cable , the charger’s USB-C port can charge an iPhone about three times faster (at 18 watts) than the USB-A wall charger that Apple used to package with its phones; your phone can charge from empty to 54% in just half an hour while you’re sitting in traffic, say, or running errands around town. This Nekteck charger’s 45-watt output and included USB-C–to–C cable also support the maximum charge rate on Android phones (such as the Samsung Galaxy S10), the 2018 and 2020 iPad Pros, and even many laptops. And you can use the 12-watt USB-A port at the same time to charge a second phone or other device with any USB cable you already have.

Port one: 45 W USB-C Port two: 12 W USB-A

With two USB-C ports, the Scosche PowerVolt PD40 (CPDCC40) is the charger you should get if you want to fast-charge two modern devices at the same time. Each of the PowerVolt PD40’s USB-C ports supports 20-watt charging, so you can charge two modern phones at top speed; that means an iPhone’s battery will go from zero to around 54% charged in half an hour, compared with about 45% on a standard 12-watt USB-A charger. You can also use MagSafe wireless chargers at full speed. The PowerVolt PD40 is one of the most affordable dual–USB-C chargers available from a company we trust, and during testing it stayed firmly in place in our car charging port. You can still use this charger with older phones, such as an iPhone 7 or earlier—they just won’t charge any faster than they would on a USB-A charger.

Port one: 20 W USB-C Port two: 20 W USB-C

We think getting a faster USB-C charger is worth spending a little more, but if you simply want a good, inexpensive power source in the car, go with ZMI’s PowerCruise C2 36-Watt Dual USB Car Charger with QC 3.0 . Any two-port, 24-watt USB-A charger from a reputable company in this price range works just as well as any other, but unlike similar models we tested, the PowerCruise C2 stands out because it supports Quick Charge 3.0 on both ports, offering slightly faster speeds to devices that support that standard. It’s also made of metal instead of the cheaper-feeling plastic of almost every other charger.

The research

Why you should trust me, should you get a car charger (or upgrade one you already have), how we picked and tested, our pick: nekteck pd 45w type-c car charger, upgrade pick: scosche powervolt pd40, budget pick: zmi powercruise c2 36-watt dual usb car charger with qc 3.0, what about cheap dual-port 12-watt chargers, the competition.

I’ve reviewed car chargers for Wirecutter since 2014, monitoring every noteworthy new model. Additionally, I’ve tested hundreds of other charging accessories, researching and writing our guides to USB wall chargers , USB-C laptop chargers , and USB-C accessories , among others. Previously, for three years I was the accessories editor at iLounge , where I reviewed more than 1,000 products, including numerous charging options.

Because poorly designed and manufactured USB-C chargers and cables can fry innocent phones and laptops, I’ve also used specialized testing hardware to confirm the safety and reliability of every charger we’ve considered for this guide. This step allows us to definitively say that our picks work exactly as advertised, putting out the right levels of power and adhering to safety standards.

Our three picks for best USB car charger, shown side-by-siide.

Even if your car has a USB port designed to sync your smartphone with the car’s entertainment system, and even if that port can charge your phone, spending $20 or so for a dedicated two-port charger can be worth it. That’s because the built-in USB ports in most cars put out only 5 watts, which isn’t enough to charge a tablet or even newer smartphones at full speed. If you’re running an app such as Google Maps or Waze, for example, your car’s USB port may not charge your phone faster than your phone uses power, so you can end up at your destination with the same battery level on your phone as when you got into the car. Good USB-A chargers can charge more than twice as fast (12 watts), and the latest USB-C chargers can charge modern smartphones at 18 to 20 watts as long as you use a cable that plugs into the smaller port instead of the USB-A cable that probably came with your device. (These are our favorite cables for iPhones .)

Even if your car’s USB port does offer higher-speed charging, most cars have only one port. All of our picks let you charge two or more devices on a single accessory outlet—something your family and friends will appreciate.

An infographic showing the differences between USB-A, USB-C, Lightening, and Micro-USB charging ports.

However, if you recently bought a multiport USB charger that provides at least 2 amps from each of its ports (look for the “output” listing in the small print on the body of the charger), you have less reason to upgrade. Although you’d be able to charge some devices slightly faster with our top picks, the difference wouldn’t be big enough to be worth spending more money on a new model right now.

Closeup of the fine-print on a car charger.

You can find hundreds of USB car chargers that plug into your car’s accessory-power jack. Over the past few years, these chargers have become significantly smaller, more powerful, and less expensive—just like USB wall chargers . But most of the car chargers available aren’t even worth considering because they don’t have enough power to simultaneously charge two devices at faster speeds, something even very inexpensive models can now do. These days, a good USB charger for the car should offer the following:

  • At least two USB ports: The cost and space savings of a single-port charger aren’t significant enough to justify the limited output. It’s almost always a better value to choose a charger with two or more ports, whether those ports be USB-A, USB-C, or a combination of the two.
  • USB-C ports with 18- to 45-watt output: A USB-C port charges most modern phones faster than a USB-A port does (if you’re using the right cable), and it can even charge tablets and laptops. Phones that support USB Power Delivery (USB PD)—the standard that allows for fast charging over USB-C—generally draw as much as 18 watts, while larger devices can take 45 watts or more. But your device will pull only as much power as it’s rated for, so there’s no safety concern about your phone being damaged or overheating when you’re using a more-powerful charger. Apple’s MagSafe wireless charger requires 20 watts in order to achieve its full wireless charging speed.
  • USB-A ports with 12-watt or QuickCharge 3.0 output: There’s no reason to choose a charger with USB-A ports slower than 12 watts (5 volts, 2.4 amps), because they’re not much less expensive and they offer slower charging to Apple and Android devices.
  • A detachable USB cable: A permanently attached USB cable is limiting because you can’t swap out the cable (in favor of, say, a Micro-USB , Lightning-to-USB , or USB-C–to–USB-C cable) to charge different kinds of devices, attach a longer cable, or have any other control over what kind of connections you use. Just as important, if a built-in cable fails, you have to replace the entire package, charger and all.
  • Good power-to-dollar value: We added up the total power across each charger’s ports and divided by the charger’s price to determine the value. This step let us rule out unnecessarily expensive models. Ranges varied from 1.2 watts per dollar at the most expensive to around 4 watts per dollar as the best value.
  • USB-IF certification: Although this was not a requirement, we gave higher credence to chargers that have been certified by the USB Implementers Forum (PDF) , which means they have passed the USB-IF Compliance Program and have been tested for safety.

For our latest update, we tested another 20 chargers, including some with only USB-A ports, some with just USB-C ports, and some with both. To find the top options in each category, we put the finalists through a number of tests.

  • Chargers with USB-C ports: USB-C uses digital communication between devices to verify charging speeds in a way that USB-A doesn’t; with the right tools, you can interpret exactly what’s going on in the communication between the charger and the device you’ve plugged in. We used the Total Phase USB Power Delivery Analyzer and its Data Center Software to measure and record this data, including the advertised power profiles, the steady state output, and whether any errors occurred in charging.
  • Chargers with USB-A ports: We tested the maximum power draw from each port by plugging in a variable power load and an ammeter. This setup allowed us to finely control the power flow and determine whether it matched the advertised rate. We started with the power load set to 0 amps and then turned it up until it matched the promised amperage, ensuring the voltage stayed between 4.75 volts and 5.25 volts. Then we repeated that test on each charger’s other ports, confirming that every port behaved as expected and that, combined, they matched the right output.
  • Combined power output: After testing each individual port, we tested the combined output when each was pushed to the maximum. The best chargers support their fastest rates on each port at the same time, with added devices slowing nothing down.

Once we had these results, the Wirecutter team had a spirited discussion about the pros and cons of different physical sizes: Is smaller always better, or can a charger be too small? The answer, based on our discussions and our hands-on testing: Yes, some chargers are so small, they’re hard to remove from a car’s outlet when you need to. Although in our evaluation we paid attention to each charger’s size and fit in a car’s dashboard, we concluded that the smallest car charger isn’t always the best choice.

The Nekteck PD 45W Type-C Car Charger, our top pick for best car charger.

The Nekteck PD 45W Type-C Car Charger is the right model for any vehicle, any phone, and almost any device you might want to charge while driving. It’s a tiny but powerful charger that has both USB-C and USB-A ports, ensuring near-universal charging compatibility. Thanks to the USB-C port’s 45-watt output, it’ll charge almost anything at top speed, so you’ll never have to worry about your phone running out of power while you’re using it to navigate, and you can even juice up your laptop on the go. The Nekteck also comes with a USB-C–to–USB-C cable, making this low-priced model an even better value.

Charging speed is the most important factor when you’re choosing a car charger, and in our tests the Nekteck PD 45W model performed as expected. It was one of the first chargers to feature both a fast USB-C port and a USB-A port, and it’s still the best. Most smartphones charge at 15 to 18 watts, so this charger’s 45-watt USB-C port is more than powerful enough to charge any smartphone at its fastest rate. (There’s no risk of your device drawing too much power, so you can safely use higher-rated chargers without causing damage to the phone or worrying about anything overheating.)

Battery percentage in charging an iPhone 13

In our tests of the Nekteck charger, our iPhone 13, paired with a USB-C–to–Lightning cable , went from completely drained to about 56% in 30 minutes, and to 85% after an hour (such figures may be slightly less if you’re using navigation apps). The Nekteck’s 12-watt USB-A port, on the other hand, brought the iPhone to about 42% and 75% in those respective periods of time. Other USB-C car chargers with 18 W output— we tested four others —can charge a phone just as quickly, but few pair that capability with a quality USB-A port, and none do so for such a good price.

A car charger sitting on a pink background

Since many compact laptops charge at 30 W or 45 W, you can even use this Nekteck charger to quickly fill them up on the go. In our tests, its USB-C port charged the 11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pro tablets—both of which are capable of laptop-like fast charging with 45 W chargers—at their fastest rates, something no other car charger we tested could do. The larger iPad reached 33% charge in half an hour and 65% in one hour. (Some popular laptop models, including the 13- and 16-inch MacBook Pros, can draw 60 W or even 96 W, so they won’t charge as fast as they can with their included wall chargers.) Our tests with Total Phase software showed that the USB-C port behaved as promised, and it didn’t throw out any red flags that would make us cautious about using it.

The body of the Nekteck PD 45W combines glossy black plastic and matte metal elements. It’s no fashion piece, but it does look pretty good next to the cheaper designs of some competitors. It sticks out 1.4 inches from the outlet, and its face is an oval 1.6 inches tall and 1.1 inches wide with a blue LED to indicate when it’s plugged in. Although the Nekteck PD 45W is compact and unobtrusive, it isn’t so short that it’s difficult to remove, as some other car chargers are.

The Nekteck PD 45W car charger is the only model we tested that includes a USB-C–to–USB-C cable, a $10 to $20 value if bought separately. You can keep this cable in your car to charge your Android phone, computer, or iPad Pro without having to buy a separate accessory. We’ve verified that the cable adheres to standards; it’s not only safe, but it also has a sturdy build quality. In addition to passing our own tests, the Nekteck charger has been certified by the USB-IF, which means it has been independently tested for safety.

Similar to the coverage from most reputable charger makers, Nekteck’s standard warranty period is 12 months, with a six-month extension if you sign up for the company’s newsletter. We’ve found the customer support to be helpful, both in response speed and in addressing our concerns.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Unlike some chargers, the Nekteck PD 45W Type-C Car Charger doesn’t have illuminated USB ports, which would make plugging in cables in a dark car a little easier.

The Scosche PowerVolt PD40 USB car charger.

If you want to simultaneously charge two phones at the fastest speeds possible, or to take advantage of Apple’s MagSafe Charger in your car, we recommend the Scosche PowerVolt PD40 . It’s one of the most affordable dual–USB-C car chargers you can get from an accessory maker we trust, and unlike cheaper options, it stays snugly in place to ensure your phone continues charging. Each port supports 20-watt charging speeds, even when you use them at the same time, and the device overall is about the same size as the tiny Nekteck 45-watt charger but not much more expensive.

In our testing, the PowerVolt PD40 charged an iPhone 13 plugged in with a USB-C–to–Lightning cable from zero to about 53% in 30 minutes and to 83% in an hour. That’s the same speed as the Nekteck charger achieved, and it’s roughly 15% more battery life than your phone would get from a standard 12-watt USB-A charger. Android phones, including the Google Pixel family and the latest generations of the Samsung Galaxy line, would see similar gains compared with using USB-A chargers. The PowerVolt PD40 also performed as expected when we ran it through the Total Phase test, showing the proper power rates and no errors, so it should be compatible with any device that charges on the USB-C standard.

When it comes to wired charging, 20 W chargers aren’t any faster than 18 W chargers for iPhones. But if you’re using a MagSafe charger in the car, you need 20 W, as found in the PowerVolt PD40, to take advantage of full-speed wireless charging.

The ports on the PowerVolt PD40 charger.

Like the Nekteck PD 45W car charger, the PowerVolt PD40 has USB-IF certification, which means an independent lab has verified that it meets a set of criteria for safety and performance. Although we didn’t rely on USB-IF certification in making our recommendations for this guide, that stamp of approval makes us even more comfortable with our picks.

Scosche offers a three-year warranty and makes service replacements easy. Wirecutter staffers who have taken advantage of the company’s warranty have reported a fast and pleasant experience.

The ZMI PowerCruise car charger, shown on a pink background.

If you don’t want to spend more than $10 or so on a charger and aren’t concerned about USB-C speeds, we recommend ZMI’s PowerCruise C2 36-Watt Dual USB Car Charger with QC 3.0 . To be fair, any dual-port USB-A charger from a reputable brand will work as well as any other. But the PowerCruise C2 has a slight edge because it’s the rare charger that supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 charging technology on both ports (if you have a compatible phone), and it has the most aesthetically pleasing design in the category.

Like every dual-port charger we tested, the PowerCruise C2 properly allowed 12-watt power draw from both ports. An iPhone 13 should reach 38% from empty in half an hour and about 74% in an hour. Although we don’t think you should buy the PowerCruise C2 only because it supports QC 3.0—most phones these days will charge just as fast or faster on a USB-C charger—the fact that it offers that support, for the same price as non-QC chargers, adds extra value and makes it the best USB-A option for a larger variety of phones.

A car charger sitting on a pink background

Whereas most car chargers are plastic, the PowerCruise C2 is made of silver-toned brass. It has a substantial heft (something that makes it feel premium) and a clean look. It also sports a glowing ring between the charging stem and the 0.8-inch-tall head, though the ports themselves aren’t lit.

You can find no shortage of small, $10-ish, dual-port USB-A chargers from reputable brands. AmazonBasics’s Dual-Port USB Car Charger , Anker’s PowerDrive 2 , Aukey’s CC-S7 , and Scosche’s ReVolt all perform identically to one another. Some models are shorter than others and end up looking like they’re part of your car when installed, and some have glowing ports that make it easier for you to plug in a cable when it’s dark. But they all work fine, and any of them is a decent buy if you find a great sale or it’s easier to pick up one of these over the ZMI PowerCruise C2 .

Spigen’s SteadiBoost USB-C PD3.0 Car Charger offers less total power than the Nekteck charger we recommend, and it doesn’t come with a cable. It also charged the iPhone 13 a bit slower in our tests—45% in half an hour compared to the Nekteck’s 56%, and 79% in an hour compared to 85%.

Spigen’s ArcStation PD3.0 Car Charger PC2000 looks like a contender for the best dual-USB-C charger on paper, but its performance in testing disappointed us. The 45-watt port displayed errors in the Total Phase Data Center, which we generally consider to be a red flag when it comes to long-term reliability. (Especially when there are comparable chargers available, we’re more comfortable recommending models that don’t produce errors than those that do.) The 20-watt port constantly reset in our tests, with our target device showing the flow of power repeatedly starting and stopping.

Ugreen’s 40W Universal Dual PD Fast-Charging Car Charger also showed errors in our Total Phase tests, and we have tested too many charging products from the company with similar errors to feel comfortable recommending any of them at this point.

Satechi’s 40W Dual USB-C PD Car Charger was inconsistent in our tests, frequently resetting its signal and not delivering the necessary 9 volts needed for its top charging speed.

Anker’s PowerDrive III Duo is a previous upgrade pick. With two 18-watt USB-C ports, it’s still a good option for fast-charging two phones at once, but it doesn’t support full-speed MagSafe charging, and the price is now much higher than it was when we first recommended this model.

Scosche’s PowerVolt Power Delivery Dual 18W USB-C Car Charger (CPDC8C8) is a good alternative to the PowerVolt PD40, as it performed equally well in our tests. But it has a larger charging face, usually sells for a few dollars more, and doesn’t support 20-watt charging for MagSafe.

Anker’s PowerDrive Speed+ Duo has a 30-watt USB-C port (as opposed to the Nekteck’s 45-watt port), doesn’t come with a cable, and generally sells for a few dollars more than the Nekteck. It’s otherwise a good choice if you prefer the aesthetics of the glowing blue ring around the charging face.

We don’t recommend the AmazonBasics 4-Port USB Car Charger because it required us to unplug and reconnect our test iPads a few times to get the proper 2.4-amp power draw from each port.

We didn’t test Scosche’s PowerVolt QC38 because its USB-C port tops out at 20 watts, its total combined output is only 38 watts, it doesn’t come with a cable, and it costs more than the Nekteck.

Despite its very similar name, Anker’s PowerDrive+ III Duo differs a little from the PowerDrive III Duo in looks and function. It’s larger, and it offers more power on one of its USB-C ports—30 watts instead of 18 watts. That may be useful if you’re trying to top off a tablet or laptop more quickly, but we don’t think that feature is worth the extra cost for most people.

Satechi’s 72W Type-C PD Car Charger provides more power than any other model we tested, with 60 watts on the USB-C port (enough to charge a 13-inch MacBook Pro at full speed) and 12 watts on the USB-A port. But it doesn’t come with a charging cable, and that much power is overkill for most devices. If you often find yourself needing to charge your laptop in the car, the Satechi is a good choice for you, but most people would be better off with the Nekteck charger, which includes a cable and offers 45-watt charging that also works with most laptops.

With two USB-C ports and 40 watts of power, you can quickly charge devices that require a USB-C to lightning cable or a USB-C to C cable. It also supports fast charging cables from Apple and Samsung in case you want speedier power , though you’ll have to purchase these cables separately. We also like how compact this device is, as it barely sticks out of the auxiliary power outlet and doesn’t protrude into your dashboard space. Users will also be happy to know that the brand also claims it uses 11-point safety technology to protect your devices from overheating. All in all, it’s a good, simple port that will work for most peoples’ needs.

At just under $12, this is a great budget buy for USB charging. It has two ports — one is USB-C while the other is USB-A , which makes it a great option for charging devices with different cord types. The UBS-C port is more powerful, delivering 27 watts of power for faster charging, while the USB-A port delivers 12 watts. It’s simple in design, and you’ll know it's working when the convenient LED light turns on.

Another top pick from Anker is this USB-C car charger that has both a USB-C port and a USB-A port to charge different types of devices. The USB-C port offers a whopping 30 watts of power to speedily charge up devices , while the USB-A port has 19.5 watts for decent charging speed. It also supports fast charging via the USB-A port, which can make up for the lower wattage so long as you have a fast-charging supported cable.

If you only have a short drive ahead of you but need a little more battery on your phone, this speedy charger is for you. With two USB-C ports that deliver 20 watts of charging, the brand claims can bring a dead iPhone to 50% battery in about 30 minutes . However, it is a bit longer than some of the other car chargers on this list, so it may stick out from the dash a bit, though its design is quite sleek regardless.

Got a whole family along for the ride? This car charger features five different ports, three of which are attached to a 5-foot cable that can easily reach to the back seat. That makes it easy to charge a variety of phones and tablets at once. You'll find two USB-C ports and three USB-A ports, with 78 total watts, you’ll experience quick charging that won’t leave you plugged in for too long. It also comes with a digital display that will show you how powerful the charger currently is — and it lets you know when it’s time to replace it.

You’ll find two powerful ports in this USB-C car charger from Spigen: a 45-watt upper port and a 20-watt lower port. The 45-watt port is powerful enough to deliver enough juice to charge a small laptop . It supports a programmable power supply (PPS), meaning it works with both Samsung and Apple fast charging with the appropriate cable. It’s on the expensive side compared to other chargers on this list, but for such a powerful USB-C option, we think it's worth it.

How we choose the best USB-C car chargers

line break

To find the best USB-C car chargers, we prioritized models that were powerful enough to charge larger devices quickly and that offered fast charging options. We also focused on car chargers that can juice up multiple devices at once and feature different USB port types to accommodate more cables. Although some chargers come with lightning cables attached, we chose USB-C chargers that allowed the user to use their own cables to best fit their device.

What to look for when shopping for the best USB-C car chargers

line break

Before hitting the road, there are a few things to consider when picking a USB-C car charger to best fit your devices and needs.

✔️ Ports: Most USB-C car chargers have at least two ports to attach a charging cable to. However, if you’re traveling with several people, you might want to choose an option that has a few additional ports.

✔️ Wattage: The wattage of the charger determines how fast the device will charge, and those with higher wattages can provide enough power to charge a larger device like a laptop. Typically, 20 watts are enough for a smartphone, but you can find ports that deliver up to 45 watts of power.

✔️ Fast Charging: Some car chargers will feature a “fast charger” port that can offer compatible devices quicker charging than a typical regular USB port can. This depends heavily on the quality of the charger and often requires a compatible fast-charging cable.

✔️ Size: A more compact car charger will be less of an unsightly nuisance in your car and keep the space looking more aesthetically pleasing. But chargers with more ports will be larger.

✔️ USB Type: In addition to a USB-C port, some car chargers will also feature a USB-A port, allowing you to use the cable of your preference for different devices. You’ll just need to remember to bring the necessary charging cables you need or keep some in the car.

Benefits of a usb car charger.

  • No more dropped calls. Using a cellphone car charger regularly create the habit of charging your smartphone whenever you get into your vehicle. This is an ideal time to charge up your phone’s battery, making sure it doesn’t run out of juice during the day. Ultimately, this means fewer embarrassing dropped calls due to a dead battery.
  • Stay ahead of your schedule. If you have a nine-to-five job, you may spend quite a few hours a week traveling to and from work, not forgetting the occasional out of town trips. Getting the best USB charger is advantageous—you will stay ahead of your schedule without getting disconnected.
  • Charge more than one device. Depending on the mobile devices or type of phone you own, there are a variety of USB car chargers available. Nonetheless, a universal car phone charger will allow you to charge many different devices with a single car charger. Having a car USB charger with multiple ports will save you additional time charging multiple devices at once.
  • Charge while traveling. When traveling on the road, you don’t necessarily have access to your home sockets. Purchasing a USB car charger adapter is the best alternative. This device will keep your smartphone, as well as other mobile devices, stocked up on power while you are on the road.

Types of USB Car Charger

The wired car USB charger is an older format that dates back to the early cell phones. Since most people didn’t need many devices in the past, the charged only need to cover a single phone. Therefore, the chargers were wired and simply ran from your cell phone to your car’s accessory port.

Unwired USB car chargers are a modern version of the USB car charger adapter, and they make up a bulk of the USB car chargers available on the market today. The unwired USB car chargers are popular due to their versatility. They can connect to a variety of electrical devices and charge them all at the same time.

Multiport USB Car Chargers

Traditional USB car chargers had a single port. A multiport USB car charger has the capability of charging up to four different devices at the same time. Using smart-charging technology, they can guarantee that all devices docked on the charger are charging at their maximum speed.

Anker is based in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. It was founded in 2011 by a former Google software engineer. The company develops its products using proprietary PowerIQ technology that (according to the company) can detect connected devices, automatically optimizing the electric current delivered to charge it faster. Apart from mobile phone accessories, the company also develops smart home appliances, portable speakers, headphones, video projectors, and other car accessories. Its most popular product is the Anker PowerDrive 2 Elite 24W .

Scosche is a US-based electronics and car audio product company founded in 1980. The company began as a consulting business in a residential garage in Southern California. The company offers dash kits, antennas, tools, amplifiers, harnesses, speaker enclosures, subwoofers, Bluetooth speakers, installation accessories, and mobile accessories. One of its popular products is the Scosche ReVolt Compact Dual Port USB Charger .

RAVPower is a US-based consumer electronics brand founded in 2011. The Chinese company, Sunvalleytek, owns RAVPower. USB Car Charger Pricing

  • Under $10: There are a variety of USB car chargers available at this price. The devices in this price range only have basic functionality, with most having a dual port. They are very popular due to their decent performance and low price.
  • Under $10-$20: The best USB car chargers are available in this price range. These chargers will have extra ports for multiple devices, with a strong design for durability.
  • Over $20: There aren’t too many USB chargers in this price range. However, the few that exist have a quality build and additional features such as smart-charging technology, extra ports, and a solid design.

Key Features

The amperage of a car USB charger is the amount of electric current it uses to charge mobile devices. Therefore, the higher the amperage of a USB car charger, the more powerful it is. Most mobile devices like Android tablets and iPads only need one amp to charge at normal speeds. An iPhone, on the other hand, needs about 2.1 amps for efficient charging. Keep this in mind when shopping. If you are looking for the best USB car charger, you’ll want to look for something with 4.8 amps. This means each USB port provides 2.4 amps, which is more than enough to charge two iPads simultaneously.

It's important to shop for a USB car charger that can support all of your devices. For instance, if you have more than two devices, look for a USB charger with more than one port. Also, check on the specifications of the USB ports. Advanced USB chargers have a slightly higher specification. Depending on the specification, your charger might be able to charge faster or accommodate several smart devices safely at the same time.

Other Considerations

  • Charging Cable: If you’ve owned a few mobile devices, then you understand that cables are prone to failure. The best USB car charger does not have a permanently-attached cable for convenience and flexibility. USB car charger adapters that have cables are not advantageous. When the cable malfunctions, you will have to repurchase the entire device. Consider getting a charger without a permanent cable that you can easily replace when it fails.
  • Compatibility: There’s nothing that will turn your lights off like buying a USB car charger that is not compatible with your phone. When shopping for a car charger for your mobile devices, make sure that you check the specifications of your preferred charger beforehand. Also, make sure it supports your car’s cigarette lighter port.
  • Fast-Charging Capabilities: While all USB chargers supply an adequate amount of power to your devices, you can shop for one that is more powerful and efficient. Fast-charging car adapters have the capability of charging your mobile devices with more efficiency than an ordinary charger. Before purchasing a USB charger for your car, check the output specification and select the right one for your smart device. An inefficient charger might not be able to charge your device quickly or as required.

Best USB Car Charger Reviews & Recommendations 2020

Best Overall

There are a few simple reasons why the Anker PowerDrive 2 takes the top spot as the best car charger. First, it’s FCC- and CE-approved.  It also combines all the goodness you’d want in a USB car charger into one device. Here’s why: The PowerDrive 2 is a 4.8 amp Dual USB car charger producing 2.4 amps on each port.

The charger has a PowerIQ feature that helps it manage the power load on docked devices. This feature helps it funnel power to the desired port, making it something of a fast charger. It's also compatible with a host of devices including Apple, Android smartphones, and nearly every device that allows USB charging.

Any drawbacks? Well, considering its superior qualities and price tag, it's a big let down that this car USB charger does not support Qualcomm fast charging. Also, since it doesn't come with a cord, you’ll have to spend more getting one, adding to its high price tag.

There’s a reason why we ranked this charger as the best budget USB car charger. It's affordable, durable, and compatible with a variety of devices. RavPower claims that this device is the smallest USB charger currently on the market. For a device that weighs less than half an ounce, it's hard to contest the fact.

Apart from being tiny, the RAVPower 24W Dual USB boasts a variety of impressive features. A big advantage is its 2.4 amp charging ports. The charger runs on iSmart 2.0 charging technology. This feature learns and adapts to the amp output to better match the device being charged. Remember, not all the devices you use will need 2.4 amps of power.

One of its drawbacks is that it’s not the best charger to get if you have a high-end or quick-charge 3.0 compatible device; this charger is somewhat slow. It’s also not a good idea to use apps such as Google or Apple Maps while using the charger since the power draw will be greater than normal and may cause issues.

Honorable Mention

The Scosche ReVolt is a compact dual-port USB charger with the capability of supporting two 2.4-amp full-sized tablet devices at once. Due to its high output, you will enjoy a slightly faster charging experience compared to a normal car charger. This device is easy to use at night, thanks to its integrated LED lighting.

The charger is small with a stylish design that is aesthetically pleasing. It's available in four different colors, including black, gold, gray, and silver. While it's optimized for Apple mobile devices, this charger also supports a host of other devices. With 24 watts of total power output, the Scosche car charger can charge two iPads simultaneously at full charging speed.

Does the Scosche USB car charger have any limitations? Well, It’s pretty tiny, which is a good thing and a bad thing. Its size offers a great fit in most cars but can be a nightmare to find in case it falls off. Due to its size, it can sometimes loosen while driving on rough roads, disconnecting your device in the process.

AINOPE Car Charger

AINOPE Car Charger

The AINOPE Car Charger is a great little charger to supply power to your devices. It comes in three distinct colors that stand out in any vehicle so you can see them more easily. Their design makes them stand out so you don’t have to fuss with finding them in a hurry. Each one is designed out of a durable metal zinc alloy, making them reliable and sturdy.

One of the best benefits of the 4.8A dual USB charger is it comes with a bright LED light. When plugged into the cigarette lighter, the light flickers on allowing you to see where it is and if it is working. The 4.8A is split between the two USB ports, with each putting out 2.4A of power, providing a quick and steady charge to any device.

You may find that it doesn’t fit into the cigarette lighter very tightly. Many have said it can pop out with the slightest touch. It will also stick out a few inches which can be annoying to some. Also, the LED light can be too bright when it is dark outside.

USB C Car Charger Super Mini AINOPE

USB C Car Charger Super Mini AINOPE

Think of this AINOPE car charger as the younger sibling to our previous mention. As opposed to having dual USB ports to charge multiple devices, this smaller and more compact model only has a single standard USB port. However, it also features a powerful more modern PD port that is compatible with a wide variety of devices. It’s capable of charging devices three times faster than USB ports.

It’s shorter in design, making its fit into cigarette lighters a bit more snug and secure as well. It too is developed out of a thick metal zinc alloy that makes it tough and durable. It’s a low-profile and sleekly designed car charger designed to power devices such as iPhones, Android devices, and tablets.

This charger will also sit a few inches above the lighter. It won’t sit flush against the console or dashboard, which can be annoying if you’re worried about looks. It may also have issues charging two devices at once.

Car Charger, Anker Mini

Car Charger, Anker Mini

This is another mini version of one of our top picks. The Anker Mini 24W car charger features two USB ports for increased versatility and ease of access. The tiny charger also comes in three different colors including a red, silver, and black design. To help you see at night, a blue LED light glows from within the USB ports.

It is rated to fully charge depleted iPhone batteries in around two hours and five minutes, so we assume it’s the same for Android devices as well. Tablets may take a little longer, but not too much. It is developed out of a heavy metal casing and comes with gold-plated circuitry that reduces heat, which increases charging speed. The ports hold the cables snugly and securely.

The charger itself doesn’t sit snugly in the socket and can come loose if you pull too hard on it or any attached cables. Additionally, the charging cables can actually fit too tightly into the ports, making them difficult to get out.

Maxboost Car Charger

Maxboost Car Charger

The Maxboost Car Charger comes in a sleek and slender design with two USB ports for maximum efficiency. Both ports produce a combined total of 4.8A or 24W and can power iPhones, Android phones, and anything else that requires a USB port to charge. This amount of power is capable of fully charging your devices in a few short hours.

One of the best benefits of the Maxboost charger is that it is built with intelligent circuit design. The technology protects it against short-circuiting, over-heating, over-currents, and over-charging devices. Once the battery is full, it will stop pulling power so you don’t waste any when it is not in use. It also features blue LED lights to help you see it at night.

Depending on the type of phone you have, the charger may not recognize it as a fast-charging device. This means it will still charge it, but not quickly as a 3.0 charger would.

Aduro 4 Port Car Charger Adapter

Aduro 4 Port Car Charger Adapter

Rounding out our list is the Aduro 4 Port Car Charger. It’s a lightweight charger that features a total of four USB ports so you can charge multiple devices at once. This means you can power an Apple device and Android device, along with two others, if you ever feel the need to do so. It’s a versatile car charger that is extra convenient as well.

It is built with an aluminum alloy body that makes it capable of withstanding drops. It’s also designed with a safe anti-overheat feature, LED lights to let you know it is charging and increased charging speed. It features a max of 5.2A, which gives you 1.3A per individual USB port.

However, it isn’t the most subtle-looking of chargers, as the four ports do take up a lot of space. You may find it difficult to find a place to put the charger if you don’t have a lot of space to work within your vehicle. It may also pop out of the socket if you are not careful with it.

  • Avoid draining your car battery. Make sure you unplug your charger from the cigarette lighter port when the engine is not running. Leaving your USB car charger plugged in may drain your car battery, depleting its power when the engine is shut off.
  • Ensure your devices are compatible with the charger.  When purchasing a car charger, make sure it supports all your mobile devices. Although most car charging adapters are compatible with the universal USB charger specification, some of them might have been manufactured before the standards were set.
  • If your device is low on power, switch it off once you plug it into your car charger. Turning it off helps to reduce the rate of power consumption, increasing its charging rate significantly.
  • Store your charger when not in use. Leaving your charger plugged in full time exposes it to dust, liquids, and wear and tear. Leaving your charger and cables hanging also makes your accessory area clustered and untidy.

Q: Are USB car chargers water-resistant?

A: Most USB car chargers are not built with water-resistant features. Therefore, it’s best to keep them away from water or, better yet, store them when not in use.

Q: Will a bad charger affect my phone?

A: Yes. A bad charger may deliver more power to your device than needed, affecting its battery. To be on the safe side, shop for a charger with surge protection.

Q: Can I charge my devices with my car engine off?

A: Yes, you can, but it’s not recommended. Charging your devices with your engine off will drain your car battery, leading to a no-start situation. If you are charging your phone and decide to make a pit stop, unplug your car charger. You could also invest in a smart car charger that stops when your devices are fully charged.

Final Thoughts

Our top product for the best USB car charger is the Anker PowerDrive 2 Elite 24W USB car charger. It has a 4.8 amp dual-power capacity. It’s also compatible with a host of portable devices.

In case you are looking for something more affordable, consider the RavPower 24W 4.8A .

Many drivers use their smartphones for things like navigation and music playback on the road, and when combined with all the other day-to-day activities, those batteries can drain fast. Having a phone charger in the car is a modern day requirement for most people, and many automakers have begun implementing them into new vehicle models. For older vehicles, there are also plenty of aftermarket solutions which can convert the typical 12-volt outlet into a handy USB charger.

Installation is no more complex than plugging in the device, which draws power directly from your car’s auxiliary power system. Choosing one of these handy gadgets may not be as simple, however, with so many options on the market. That’s why we rounded up the best of the best for your consideration, plus tips on everything you need to know before you shop.

The Best USB Car Chargers

  • Best Overall: PowerDrive III Type C Charger
  • Best Budget: Ailkin 30-Watt Charger
  • Best Low-Profile: Ainope 4.8A USB Charger
  • Best for Androids: SuperOne Retractable USB-C Dual Charger
  • Best Single USB-C: Scosche PowerVolt USB-C Charger

What to Consider

Even affordable phones come with countless specs to compare, contrast and consider, even when you’ve set your budget. To help you narrow down this list, select which features are most important to you.

There are a couple questions to ask when browsing for chargers: “How many devices do I want to charge?” and “How fast?” One or two USB ports typically suffices for most drivers. Those who carry a lot of gear on the road may find four or six more suitable. Wattage is the most useful indicator of how fast a charger works while comparing different models (the higher the number, the faster it’ll charge). However, keep in mind that the total wattage may split into half, or less, when plugging in multiple devices.

Another thing to look out for are quick-charging USB-C ports (Type C), which is the latest standard and generally more compact and streamline than devices with older USB-A ports. USB-C is also used to charge many cameras, and some laptops without the need for adapters. Type C has widely become the standard for Android devices, and with the release of the iPhone 15 in late 2023, Apple has also moved to include USB-C charging across its entire mobile lineup.

Quick Charging

Look for chargers that are Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 certified, also called Power Delivery or PD, as these provide a guaranteed 36 watts to compatible devices and deliver the fastest speed. The majority of modern smartphones, including Android and Apple phones, can take advantage of Quick Charge 3.0 to increase power delivery and reduce charge times.

How We Selected

As an automotive and tech writer, my job can sometimes require travel to some strange new places—at these times, having a charged up phone for communication and navigation is often paramount. In both my professional and personal life, I’ve used a variety of built-in and aftermarket car charging solutions. This piece includes products to suit both Android and iPhone users, with an assortment of price points and feature sets. We prioritized options with multiple ports, and the most important ones, plus decent build quality and fast charging capability. We also looked through customer reviews to find any reports of shoddy 12-volt plugs and inputs, including only the options with reliable builds that’ll last for years.

Anker PowerDrive III Type C USB Car Charger

PowerDrive III Type C USB Car Charger

The Anker PowerDrive 3 packs a 40-watt combined output into a compact body, sending 20 watts of quick charging power to each of its two USB-C ports.

The charger uses a small blue halo light for visibility, and each port gets a similar blue tint of its own. An 18-month warranty is included with purchase.

Beyond that, there aren’t too many bells and whistles. C-type cables are quickly becoming the standard for charging modern devices, including the new iPhone 15 and current model Android phones. If you have older charging cables lying around, you may want to opt for a charger that includes a USB-A port as well.

Still, this USB car charger’s dual fast-charging ports, power, warranty and price point are a well-rounded lineup of features. Plus, Anker is a reliable brands known for its well-designed devices.

Ailkin 30-Watt USB Car Charger

30-Watt USB Car Charger

This simple 12-volt plug-in from Ailkin comes with a low price tag, one USB-A port, and one USB-C. It also has a 30-watt capacity, which can charge a phone nearly as quickly as the QC 3.0 standard. The catch is that you only get that maximum wattage while plugged into the Type C port.

The USB-A puts out 2.4 amps of current, without quick charging, so you’ll need a USB-C cable to get full performance out of the USB car charger. As a bonus, there’s also blue halo lighting around the ports to keep them visible at night. Lastly, Ailkin provides a 1-year warranty with purchase.

Superone Retractable USB-C Dual Car Charger

Retractable USB-C Dual Car Charger

This USB car charger features two built-in retractable USB-C cables, so you don’t have to worry about misplacing or forgetting to bring your own cables.

It’s perfect for Android users, since that platform has adopted the USB-C standard for several years now. One of the cables provides quick charging, while the other gives a lesser 2.4 amp power supply.

iPhone 15 and later users can also take advantage of the C-Type cables. For older iPhone owners, a Lightning version of the same model charger is available.

Other features include an additional C-Type port, and a standard A-Type port for your other devices. Plus a small LED display which measures the supplied voltage and can be used to monitor your car battery’s health.

Scosche PowerVolt USB-C Charger for Car

PowerVolt USB-C Charger for Car

This Scosche USB car charger is for those who just need to charge one device quickly over USB-C. It only has a single port, but that port gives you 30-watt quick charging. The manufacturer states that it charges a dead iPhone to 50 percent capacity in about 30 minutes.

Like the Superone, it features a compact, flush design. It also has a fabric pull tab so it’s easy to remove from the dash. The charger is mostly black, with a dim LED power indicator along the top, so visibility may present an issue. As a bonus, Scosche includes a 3-year warranty, which we find to be exceptional for this type of product.

Belkin BoostCharge USB-C Car Chrager

BoostCharge USB-C Car Chrager

This black Belkin USB car charger features two USB-C ports, with a combined electrical output of 36 watts. However, the total output is split between each port, so actual capacity is about 18 watts per outlet.

It won’t charge as quickly as the previous Scosche model, but being able to plug in two devices at once may prove advantageous. Apart from a tiny white power indicator, the charger uses no integrated lighting.

TECKNET Four Port USB Car Charger

Four Port USB Car Charger

For those that still have a bunch of USB Type-A cables lying around, this TeckNet USB car charger has you covered with four available ports. Only one of them is equipped with Quick Charge 3.0 compatibility, while the others contend with the slower 2.4 amp standard.

The whole device is surrounded with an illuminated blue ring which makes it visible at night, and shows when the power is running. The Quick Charge equipped port also has an internal light of its own, assisting the user in picking it out of the lineup.

Ainope 4.8A USB Charger for Car

4.8A USB Charger for Car

This USB car charger’s compact design sits flush with the car’s outlet without protruding from the dash. It uses two standard USB-A ports, which are still the most widely used type of cable. Each port also gets its own integrated lighting, so they’re almost impossible to miss in the dark.

The body of the charger is lightweight zinc alloy, which stands up readily to pressure and heat. A variety of color options are available in addition to the standard black. On the downside, each port only supplies 12 watts/ 2.4 amps, which leaves no quick charging options.

Electronic Silk Road Corp HaloLock Magnetic Car USB Charger

HaloLock Magnetic Car USB Charger

The ESR HaloLock USB car charger is made to interface with the MagSafe charging system on iPhone 12 and newer generations up to the latest iPhone 15 models. However, it isn't compatible with Android or iPhones older than the 12th generation.

The charger magnetically locks to the phone, and holds it in place in either portrait or landscape orientation. In this way, it doubles as a hands-free phone holder while sending a wireless quick-charging current into the device.

The body of the charger mounts onto an A/C vent, with an included power supply cable running into the standard 12-volt outlet. The wireless unit gets its power from a Type-A to Type-C cable, leaving one free USB-A port on the power supply to use for other devices.

Many modern vehicles now have everything you need to charge smartphones, tablets, and laptops, built right into them—even base model vehicles include charging USB ports that can juice up multiple devices simultaneously. However, if you need a few additional port chargers to use on a road trip, or have an older vehicle, you'll need to invest in a charger that can be plugged into a 12-volt port or, if your ride’s of a certain age, a cigarette lighter.

Out of many plug-in, 12-volt car chargers and wireless charging docks, the Anker PowerDrive III Duo (available at Amazon) is one of the best car chargers you can buy. It charges reliably, is well-built, and its quick-charge port allows it to live up to its fast-charging standards for your phone’s battery.

The recommendations in this guide are based on thorough product and market research by our team of expert product reviewers. The picks are based on examining user reviews, product specifications, and, in some limited cases, our experience with the specific products named.

car usb travel charger

The Anker PowerDrive III Duo is a fast, reliable 12-volt charger for modern USB-C devices.

  • Ports Two USB C ports
  • Fast Charging: Yes
  • Wireless Charging: No

The Anker PowerDrive’s speed proved to be the second-fastest charger we tested, topping up my smartphone to 99% in just an hour and 17 minutes. This is thanks, in part, to the fact that one of the PowerDrive III Duo’s two USB-C ports is equipped with Anker's proprietary PowerIQ Fast Charging technology, which intelligently identifies the device that’s plugged in to deliver the fastest charge possible for it.

Like the other chargers in this guide, the PowerDrive III Duo has overload protection. It also has tech baked into it to keep the charger from overheating while in use, prolonging the life of the charger.

The only thing we didn’t like is that the PowerDrive III Duo has the largest faceplate of all the ones tested for this guide—an odd design decision, when you consider the small size of USB-C ports compared to older charging standards. This could be annoying if your vehicle’s 12V port is in close proximity to any other ports or controls in your dashboard.

Product image of AmazonBasics USB-C Car Charger

  • Ports Two USB A ports
  • Fast Charge? No
  • Wireless Charging?: No

The AmazonBasics Dual Port USB Car Charger features two USB-A ports and is small enough to easily blend into your vehicle’s dash or center console. Unfortunately, it was the slowest charger we tested for this guide. That said, the charge times of all of the hardware we tested were separated by mere minutes.

It charged our iPhone XR in just under an hour-and-half. However, when it came to charging the iPhone to 100%, it clocked in at just over two hours.

Product image of Anker 24W Dual USB Car Charger

In addition to a great low price, this car charger packs a serious punch in a small package. This device is tiny. Lots of third-party car chargers with multiple ports tend to take up a lot of room, which can make your car feel cluttered and get in the way.

Product image of AINOPE USB Car Charger

This highly rated car charger is the definition of simple yet effective. It’s ideal for those who spend many days on the road and want to keep their phone fully charged. What makes this car charger especially great for travel is its compact size. It’s also very lightweight, durable, and resists scratches, so you can safely keep it in your travel bag. This charger can also handle two devices at once, at a decent speed. Reviewers say it doesn’t necessarily fit flush as the brand claims.

Product image of AILKIN USB Dual Port Car Charger

More than one review of this car charger praises its durability. Some basically have zero complaints, while a few other users say the charging speed is not as fast as they’d hoped. What’s great about this car charger is how it stops charging your phone automatically when the battery is full, which saves energy and prevents overheating. In addition, you can charge two devices at the same time and easily travel with it due to its compact size.

What You Should Know About Car Chargers

There are lots of things to consider when buying a car charger to use with your smartphone, tablet or another USB-powered device. Some, for example, come with built-in cables with a male adapter on the end for charging a specific device, whether it be a USB-C charger for an Android phone or a multitude of other devices or, Apple’s Lightning charging standard. This can be handy if you’re charging a compatible device, however, you’ll need to pack an extra cable if you want to charge anything that doesn’t use the adapter that the charger is equipped with.

Other car chargers come with multiple ports. One or more female USB-A or USB-C ports and allow you to plug in whatever cable you wish. These 12V chargers are far more versatile, you’ll need to remember to bring the charging cables you need with you or leave some in the car.

In some instances, a 12-volt car charger will feature a ‘fast charger’ port which, as the name suggests, offers compatible devices faster charging than a regular USB or wireless charger connection can. The reliability of such claims depends heavily upon the quality of the charger and which fast charging technology it employs.

Best USB-C Car Charger for Your iPhone or Android Phone

Here are the best USB-C car chargers to keep your devices topped off while you're on the go.

Our Experts

car usb travel charger

CNET’s expert staff reviews and rates dozens of new products and services each month, building on more than a quarter century of expertise.

aukey-cc-y48-copy

It's good to have a backup charger with you wherever you go. Between flipping through Spotify  and navigation, it's easy to drain your phone's battery. That's why it's important to invest in a car charger that can keep your phone going, for everyday tasks as well as road trouble or emergencies.

Fortunately, car charger tech has improved. You can now get some high wattage options for maintaining the charge on your phone or rapidly juicing up another device. You'll definitely want to invest in a dual-port charger you can plug in to your vehicle's 12-volt adapter (or "cigarette lighter," if you're old school). And having one that can charge multiple devices simultaneously is a huge perk when you're on the go -- and possibly a lifesaver.

Historically these were two or more USB-A ports, the wide rectangular connection we've had on nearly everything for decades. More recently, there've been a growing number of USB-C options. USB-C, the small, rounded-off rectangle, is found on nearly all cell phones (including -- now -- Apple ), tablets, laptops and more. It's basically the new standard in everything but name.

We decided to focus on chargers that have one of each, as this gives you the flexibility to charge newer USB-C devices, plus a "legacy" USB-A port that can connect to any USB devices as long as you have the right cable. (You can always pick up dongles or adapters, too, to go from USB-C to USB-A or USB-A to USB-C .)

In our testing, there wasn't a huge difference in charging times between the models we tested, though some were faster than others.

Best overall USB car charger

Aukey cc-y48 dual car charger (48w).

The Aukey CC-Y48 48W Dual Charger was just a few seconds behind the Satechi in charging speeds. However, it's a lot cheaper and not as tall. It also supports both the QC and PD charging protocols, so it should fast-charge a wider variety of phones and other devices. It offers a lot of benefits for being just fractionally slower in our testing, plus it's one of the cheapest car chargers we tested. An all-around easy choice.

aukey-cc-y48-copy

Satechi ST-TCPDCCS (72W)

While all the chargers we tested charged with fairly similar rapidity, the Satechi charged two devices at the same time the fastest… by a few seconds. But a few seconds is a few seconds. It has a fairly typical torpedo shape, but is taller than the others we tested. That may be a strength or weakness, depending on your car's layout. It's on the expensive side of the chargers we tested, but wasn't the most expensive either.

The Satechi doesn't support the QC fast charging protocol, so if your phone only supports that, check out the Aukey instead. Overall, this is a good charger if you don't mind the height, and a great charger if that height fits your car better.

satechi-72w

The Amazon option

Anker powerdrive speed plus (49w).

This Anker performed in the middle of the pack in our testing, which in fairness meant just a few minutes behind the leaders. However, its price at the time was the highest of any we tested. It is also the largest, with the output end roughly twice as wide as the barrel. Not a bad charger by any stretch, and if it was cheaper than our winners here, it'd be a great alternative.

Unlike many of the other options we tested, this one is still available on Amazon, too. This is a bit more affordable.

screen-shot-2022-09-12-at-10-31-16-am.png

Smallest USB car charger tested

Aukey cc-a3 dual-port car charger (30w).

The Aukey CC-A3 is absolutely tiny. In most cars it will likely remain flush with the top of the 12-volt socket itself. To remove it, there's a small handle that pivots up when needed, and folds down flush with the top when not in use. It's a clever design. It's also the second-slowest charger we tested. That equates to about 10% longer to 50% capacity. However, the small size likely makes up for that speed difference.

The CC-A3 supports both the QC and PD fast charging protocols.

aukey-cc-a3

Budget car charger pick (Update: Out of Stock)

Monoprice 2-port usb car charger (39w).

Monoprice has developed a reputation for decent products at low prices, and this charger is a pretty good example of that. Speed-wise it was mid-pack, a few minutes slower than the best, a few minutes faster than the worst. However, at $13 at the time this is published, it's one of the cheapest options here, less than half of the Satechi and in between the price of the two Aukey models at the time of testing.

The Monoprice only supports the PD fast charging protocol.

Monoprice USB car charger

Other products we tested

Wotobeus PD 65W : The Wotobeus offered a splash of color in the form of a removable silicone sleeve that covered the larger half of the charger. Despite having the highest claimed wattage rating (83!), it actually charged the slowest in our testing. This, combined with a price the same as some faster chargers, put it out of the running.

How we test car chargers

Six 12v USB car charger adapters in a row on a green background.

We performed both synthetic and real-world testing for all the chargers we considered. Using a MakerHawk Electronic Load Tester , an  Uctronics Electronic USB Load Tester  and a JacobsParts USB C PD DC Voltage Trigger Test Module I tested the maximum amperage possible for each of the USB-specified voltage outputs each device was capable of . I didn't waste gas to do this, instead I used a Knoter AC to DC Converter which is rated at far more wattage than we were dealing with here. While interesting, and a good test to get a sense of what's going on "behind the scenes," these numbers didn't create terribly useful real-world numbers for most people.

So I used the Uctronics Electronic USB Load Tester to create a "dummy load" at the maximum power output possible on the charger's USB-A output, and then timed how long it would take to charge a fast-charging USB-C device, in this case a Pixel 5. Most battery-powered devices limit the charging speed at the upper and lower ends of the battery's maximum storage, so I timed how long it would take to charge 10% with the battery no lower than 30% and no higher than 70%. Overly cautious? Probably. I also put the phone in airplane mode and waited for the screen to go into standby before timing.

The chart below shows that number, plus a calculated "for 50%" time that estimates how long it would take to charge 50% of this device's battery. Charging speeds between phones/tablets/etc. can vary for a number of reasons. Which is to say your phone, with the same charger, might charge faster or slower than the numbers listed here. However, it should charge roughly the same amount faster or slower compared to one of the faster or slower chargers.

Charge times

How fast can car chargers really charge?

This is an interesting question. Theoretically, the maximum output from a 12-volt "cigarette lighter" socket is 180 watts, since most run through a 15-amp fuse (15Ax12V=180W). In practice, it's far lower. The last thing any manufacturer wants is for you to blow fuses in your car trying to recharge three phones, a laptop and a curling iron or something. For the most part, the fastest car chargers will charge your phone in a similar, though probably somewhat slower, timeframe as a decent charger at home.

Are the manufacturers' wattage ratings real?

That said, if you consider that the number is split between the different USB outputs… also, no.

The wattage output ratings for each charger is a theoretical maximum based on what could be supplied by the specific outputs. It's always all the outputs combined into a single number; you'll never get close to that on a single USB connection.

That all considered, they should give you an idea, within a brand, which charger offers the highest potential output. One company's 48-watt charger should charge devices faster than that same company's 12-watt charger. But there's no way to know if one company's 48-watt charger is faster or slower than another company's 30-watt or 80-watt, as you can see in our testing.

Can my phone fast-charge on any charger?

Maybe. There are several fast-charging specifications and most phones don't include them all. Most chargers don't include them all either. Before purchasing any charger, even our picks, it's worth finding out what kind of charging your phone is capable of and making sure the charger supports it. The two protocols to consider are PD and QC . PD is extremely common, QC is found in many, though not all, phones/tablets that use Qualcomm chips.

Will an 80-watt charger blow up my 18-watt phone?

Not unless there's something really, really wrong with your charger and your phone. The beauty of USB is that the changing device only draws as much power as it needs from the charger.

What about dual USB-C chargers?

There are endless varieties of car charger outlet combinations. For any reasonable-length guide such as this, a narrowing down is necessary. That's why we focused on chargers with one USB-C and one USB-A port, for the greatest flexibility. However, if you don't need a USB-A port, most of the companies we've mentioned above also make dual USB-C chargers that likely perform similarly. Click on one of the options above that looks good to you, and there's likely a dual USB-C option listed as a recommendation elsewhere on that page.

What about 4x USB-C and larger?

Most likely a good charger with four USB-C inputs will charge a single device just as fast as our picks, possibly even two devices. However, there's only so much power that can go through one of these devices. Four USB-C devices all charging at the same time aren't going to charge as fast as a single device on the same charger.

They're also huge. Maybe I'm overly sensitive to this since I drive one of the smallest cars you can buy , and the last thing I want is a USB charger the size of my passenger seat taking up space. If you regularly charge that many devices, and you have the space to spare, they're worth considering. Some of the companies we looked at also make big multichargers, but not all.

Do I need special cables?

Maybe. Apple products are persnickety about their cables, so you might need a MFi-Certified Type-C-to-Lightning cable to enable fast charging. Non-Apple devices should be fine with any decent USB-C cable.

I did find a difference in charging times with longer USB-C cables, so for the best times it's good to keep the length of the cable as short as possible.

Best car charger 2023: 12V to USB adaptors

The best car chargers for powering your phone on the go. Whether it's USB, UBS-C, or iPhone chargers

One of the best car charger plugged into a 12V socket, with two USB sockets

USB charging ports and Bluetooth are quickly becoming par for the course on most new cars, but step back in time just a few years and it’s a very different story. Less than a decade ago, these were optional extras on many vehicles, yet today’s dependence on smartphones - for music and navigation primarily - makes the lack of USB and Bluetooth feel like you’ve bought a car from the middle of the 20th century.

But fear not, as the humble 12V socket - also known as the cigarette lighter socket - can come to the rescue. There is a huge range of devices that slot into the 12V socket, which is often conveniently located somewhere between the front two seats, to power your smartphone, best dash cam and sat-nav , and even give your car Bluetooth connectivity via the radio.

These devices are often very cheap - as in, less than £10/$10 in many cases - and come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours to help them fit in neatly and complement the interior of your car.

If you're charging your phone in the car then you might also want one of the best car phone holders .

How to buy the best car charger

Why you can trust T3 Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

There are a few key questions you must ask yourself before buying any of these products. Firstly, will they fit in your car, and once in place will it be easily accessible? Most cars locate their 12V socket somewhere obvious between the front seats, and some even offer a second socket in the back.

But some are tucked away, hidden from view, or located close to a piece of interior which could obstruct anything you plan to plug into them. Some cars even locate the 12V socket deep in the front passenger footwell, out of sight and almost out of reach; great for subtly installing a dash cam, but not so helpful when trying to charge your phone.

Next you’ll want to decide if the charger will be left in place all the time, or removed after each journey, and whether it will complement the aesthetics of your car. Thankfully, many of these products come in a variety of colours to help out with that last point.

You should be aware that the charging capabilities of these products depends on how many devices are plugged into them, and you should avoid leaving devices - especially larger ones like iPads - charging while parked, as they could drain the battery.

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

This USB car charger comes from RAVPower, a big name in the world of power banks and chargers. It has two USB ports for powering two devices at once, and has a scratch-resistant metal finish.

So-called iSmart 2.0 technology promises fast charging, with the battery of an iPhone X taking as little as 2.2 hours to charge. RAVPower claims the Samsung Galaxy S9 takes exactly two hours. The charger is available in black, gold, red and silver, so hopefully you can pick one which best suits the interior of your car.

At a penny under £7, we think this charger represents excellent value for money.

DIVI All-Metal Car Charger

2. DIVI All-Metal Car Charger

Most USB car chargers stick out some way from the 12V lighter socket, but this option from DIVI is much smaller. It’s so small, in fact, that it sits almost flush against the edge of the socket, making its two USB ports look like they were always fitted to your car - not a sub-£10 aftermarket addition.

The charger offers up to 2.4A of power from each port, meaning you can recharge the batteries of two smartphones at once, or use of to power a dash cam or satellite navigation system. You could even give your car the gift of Alexa , and plug in a second-generation Amazon Echo Dot, if that’s your thing.

Our only criticism here - and one shared with a lot of these chargers - is how the ports contain a bright blue light, which can be distracting, especially when driving at night. We wish manufacturer wouldn’t fit these LEDs. The charger is available in black, silver and red.

CHOETECH Fast Wireless Car Charger

3. CHOETECH Fast Wireless Car Charger

Very few cars have wireless charging, but with this phone holder it’s a feature you can easily add to your vehicle for a little over £20. This phone holder works like most others slotting into an air vent then hooking around the back of the outlet’s fins to stay in place. This solution doesn’t work on every type of vent, so check the diagrams carefully before purchasing.

Once fitted, you’ll want to plug the holder into your car’s lighter socket or USB port (a fast charger is available separately) and your phone will charge up whenever it is placed in the holder.

Spring-loaded arms ensure any smartphone fits securely in the holder, and it can be rotated to hold your phone in landscape or portrait orientation.

TeckNet 4 Port Car Charger

4. TeckNet 4 Port Car Charger

Most car chargers are limited to two USB ports, but this option from TeckNet serves up four ports, with a total power output of 9.6A. The manufacturer even claims the device can charge four tablets at once.

An intelligent circuit design is claimed to prevent short-circuiting, overheating and over-charging, and it’s surprisingly compact at 2.24 inches long, by 1.55 inches wide.

This charger is particularly useful if you need to charge up two smartphones, while also powering a dash cam and satellite navigation system - or if your rear passengers are also low on juice. Put another way, you’ll be considered a life-saver on the drive back from a weekend festival.

As with other larger car chargers, you may want to crack out the tape measure and check the device will fit, especially if you vehicle’s 12V socket is located is a tight cubbyhole, as is sometimes the case.

HiGoing Bluetooth Car Adapter and Charger

5. HiGoing Bluetooth Car Adapter and Charger

This device from HiGoing comprises two separate pieces. First there is a USB charger, which slots into the 12V socket and can power two devices at once.

Next, there is a Bluetooth module which slots into your car’s auxiliary cable input. Connect your phone to this over Bluetooth, and calls and music will be played through the car’s sound system.

The Bluetooth module is wireless and has a battery life of 10 hours of continuous music streaming. It is then recharged either by plugging into a USB port at home, or by attaching magnetically to the top of the 12V socket charger.

This may sound a little complex, but offers a flexible solution for drivers whose vehicle has a auxiliary input but not Bluetooth, and come with the added extra of two USB charging sockets.

HUNDA 5-Port Car Charger

6. HUNDA 5-Port Car Charger

Four charging ports is all well and good, but what is all five seats are occupied? And everyone needs their phone charging? No problem, as this option by HUNDA serves up five USB ports.

Peak power (delivered to one device at a time) is 9A, while this drops to 2.4A if all five ports are occupied.

Because such a large charge likely won’t fit wherever your car’s lighter socket is located, the device comes with a two foot extension cable, so you can place the hub more centrally in the vehicle. We reckon dropping it into a central cup holder, or on the arm rest between the car’s two front seats would be ideal.

VicTsing FM Transmitter and USB Charger

7. VicTsing FM Transmitter and USB Charger

Older cars without USB charging ports and Bluetooth audio can feel positively archaic these days, but as long as they have a 12V lighter socket and an FM radio, this is a very easy problem to fix.

Step forward the FM transmitter and charging kit. This sub-£15 gadget slots into your lighter socket, then can charge devices from its (admittedly low-power) 2.1A USB ports, and play music from your phone on the car’s stereo.

The device does this by taking your phone’s audio over a Bluetooth connection, then broadcasting it as a FM frequency. Simply tune your car radio to this frequency, and you can listen to whatever your phone is playing, through the car stereo. There are also buttons for controlling music playback, volume, and accepting or ending incoming calls.

Colour options include black, blue and grey. The only downside is the inherent chuckiness of this device, and how it may not fit neatly in some cars; it depends on where the 12V socket is on your particular vehicle.

Cheap car hire at Moscow Vnukovo airport

Top tips for hiring a car at moscow vnukovo airport.

  • Whether you’re visiting Moscow for a week or a month, getting a car rental at Moscow Vnukovo Airport (VKO) is the best way to explore the Russian capital. You’ll traverse various parts of the city that aren’t fully accessible by public transport. Self-driving lets you choose the shortest route to your destination and avoid traffic. Renting a car will save you money compared to using a taxi when you look at the overall costs to multiple destinations.
  • Collecting your rental car at Moscow Vnukovo Airport isn’t that complicated. You’ll find several local and international car rental suppliers at the airport with an on-site counter. Car rental desks at VKO are on the ground level in the Arrivals section, Terminal A. Once you get to the airport, head straight to your preferred company’s rental desk. You can also visit the rental desks after booking online. Make sure you carry all the requested documents. After processing, a staff member from the rental company will guide you to the pick-up point outside the terminal. Take your time to inspect the car for any dents or damages. Check the fuel level and make sure your maps are working and in your preferred language since most road signs in Moscow are in Russian.
  • The other benefit of getting a car rental at Moscow Vnukovo Airport is that you’ll have a smooth return process. Most rental companies will ask you to return the rental car to the exact location you collected it, or the drop-off point stated in your rental contract. What you should pay attention to is the return period. Make sure you return the car on time to avoid the late return penalty fee. You can inform the company early if you’re facing challenges and can’t return the rental car on time. After dropping off the vehicle, conduct a final inspection to check for damages before heading to your rental counter for clearance.
  • Moscow Vnukovo Airport usually gets busy between March to July when most tourists visit for the summer holidays. During this period, car rental bookings are generally high. You can experience long waits at the car rental counter. The airport also gets busy during weekends, special events, holidays, and major conferences in Moscow. We advise you to book in advance for availability and to save money since rates are comparatively pricey during the peak travel season.
  • Book your car hire at Moscow Vnukovo airport at least 4 weeks before your trip in order to get a below-average price
