Visit the UK as a Standard Visitor

When you can extend your stay.

You may be able to extend your stay if you have permission to be in the UK for less than 6 months. You can extend your stay up to a total of 6 months.

You can only apply to stay in the UK for longer than 6 months if you’re:

• a patient receiving medical treatment
• an academic and you still meet the eligibility requirements
• a graduate retaking the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board ( PLAB ) test or doing a clinical attachment

You must apply to extend your stay and pay the £1,000 fee regardless of your nationality.

You need to apply while you’re still in the UK and before your current visa or permission expires.

• £1,000 to extend your stay as a Standard Visitor
• an extra £1,000 if you use the super priority service

You’ll also need to have your biometric information (fingerprints and a photo) taken - there’s no fee for this.

If you have permission to be in the UK for less than 6 months

You may be able to extend your stay as long as the total time you spend in the UK is no more than 6 months. You must meet the eligibility requirements and pay the £1,000 fee.

For example, if you have been in the UK for 3 months, you can apply to extend your stay for 3 more months. This applies if you needed a visa to visit the UK and also if you did not need one.

If you need to stay longer for medical treatment

If you’re already in the UK, you can apply to stay for a further 6 months if you:

• have paid for any treatment you’ve already had in the UK
• can and will pay the further costs of your treatment
• continue to meet the medical treatment eligibility requirements

There is no limit on how many times you can extend your stay. It costs £1,000 each time you extend.

Documents you must provide

You must get a medical practitioner or NHS consultant who’s registered in the UK to provide details of your medical condition that needs further treatment.

If you’re having treatment at an NHS hospital under a reciprocal healthcare arrangement, you will need to provide another authorisation form from your country’s government saying they will pay for your treatment.

If you need to stay longer as an academic

If you’re already in the UK and have permission to visit for less than 12 months, you can apply to stay for up to 12 months in total.

Your partner and children can apply to stay for up to 12 months too. They must have their own application and each pay the £1,000 fee.

You must prove you:

• are highly qualified in your field of expertise, for example you have a PhD or higher
• were working in that field of expertise at an academic institution overseas prior to your arrival in the UK
• are not filling a permanent teaching post

If you’re an academic, but not a senior doctor or dentist, you must also prove you’re visiting to do research or a formal exchange.

If you’re a senior doctor or dentist, you must also prove you’re visiting to do research, clinical practice, a formal exchange or to teach.

Before you extend your stay, check if you need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate . You may need one if you’re researching certain subjects at postgraduate level or above.

If you need to stay longer to retake the PLAB test

If you’re already in the UK, you can apply to extend your stay for up to 6 months to retake the PLAB test.

You must provide written confirmation from the General Medical Council that you’re retaking the test.

If you want to do a clinical attachment or dental observer post

If you pass the PLAB test, you can apply to stay longer to do an unpaid clinical attachment or dental observer post.

You can stay in the UK for up to 18 months in total.

You must provide written confirmation:

• of your clinical attachment offer
• that you’ve not done a clinical attachment in the UK before

You must not treat patients.

Proving your identity and providing your documents

When you apply, you’ll be asked to make an appointment at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services ( UKVCAS ) service point to provide your biometric information (your fingerprints and a photo).

You’ll also need to submit the supporting documents that prove your eligibility. You can:

• upload your documents into the online service
• have them scanned at your UKVCAS appointment

You must not travel outside of the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man until you get a decision. Your application will be withdrawn if you do.

Apply to extend your stay as a Standard Visitor

Once you’ve started your application you can save your form and complete it later.

You can get help with completing the online form if you:

• do not feel confident using a computer or mobile device
• do not have internet access

You can only use this service if you’re applying to extend your stay in the UK.

You cannot get immigration advice through this service.

How long it takes to get a decision

If you use the standard service, a decision will usually be made within 8 weeks of providing your supporting documents and proving your identity.

If you use the super priority service a decision will be made:

• by the end of the next working day after your UKVCAS appointment if your appointment is on a weekday
• 2 working days after your UKVCAS appointment if your appointment is at the weekend

Working days are Monday to Friday, not including bank holidays.

Once you’ve got your decision letter, your biometric residence permit will take up to 10 working days to arrive.

You’ll be contacted if your application is complex and will take longer, for example:

• if your supporting documents need to be verified
• if you need to attend an interview
• because of your personal circumstances (for example if you have a criminal conviction)

Once you’ve applied you can stay in the UK until you’ve been given a decision, as long as you applied before your permission to be in the UK ended.

Q:  What are the benefits of the visa validity extension?  

U.S. and Chinese citizens who regularly travel back and forth between the U.S. and China will benefit from the longer validity by not having to apply and pay the application fee every year.  Businesses in both countries, including the tourism industry, will benefit from increased travel, investment, and business development opportunities between the two countries.  Longer visa validity will allow students and exchange visitors to return to their home countries during school and work holidays more easily.  

Q:  Will these changes in visa validity affect fees?

There will be no change in visa application fees.  The basic visa fee of 160 USD includes appointment scheduling and passport delivery services.  Visa information is available free both online at www.ustraveldocs.com and through the Call Center.  Fees can be paid by debit card online, at any CITIC ATM, or in cash at a CITIC branch.  Applicants can pick up their passports at any of 800 CITIC bank branches.  

Q:  Will these changes affect processing times?

We expect that these changes in visa validity will be very popular among Chinese travelers. The U.S. Mission in China is taking steps to handle a potential increase in visa workload and intends to keep visa processing times as short as they have been over the past several years.  

Q:  Will changes in visa validity have any effect on visa eligibility?

The same standards of eligibility for a U.S. visa will apply as before this extension in validity.  

Q:  Will applicants with previous visas still be eligible to apply for visa renewal via the Interview Waiver Program?

The Interview Waiver Program (IWP) remains a valuable tool to many visa holders who wish to renew visas.  A great majority of current tourist, business visitor, student, and exchange visitor nonimmigrant visa holders will remain eligible for IWP processing.   More information on IWP processing can be found at www.ustraveldocs.com . 

Q:  Will these changes in visa validity affect visa applications subject to administrative processing?

Changes in visa validity will not change the requirement that some applications will need additional administrative processing.  As is true in all visa cases, when administrative processing is required, visa validity may vary based on individual circumstances of each case. Visa applicants are reminded to apply early for their visa, well in advance of the anticipated travel date.

Q:  Will the increased visa validity allow me to stay longer in the United States?

It is important to note that visa validity is NOT the same as the allowed duration of stay.  A visa allows a foreign citizen to travel to a U.S. port of entry where a Customs and Border Protection officer will grant admission to valid travelers.  In doing so, the officer will inform the traveler of the permitted length of stay.    The current change in visa validity does NOT change the permitted duration of stay for any visa class.  Remaining in the United States beyond your allowed duration of stay can result in a violation of U.S. immigration laws and may cause you to be ineligible for travel to the United States in the future.  

Q:  When is the right time to apply for this longer-validity visa?

The up-to ten-year validity visa is not a temporary offer, but represents a long-term reciprocal commitment.  While an applicant should generally apply well in advance of their anticipated travel date, an individual with a currently valid visa or with no current travel plan should not rush to apply.  

Q:  If the visa currently in my passport has one year validity, does it now have a longer validity?  

Existing visas will be valid only until the expiration date printed on the current visa.  This extension does NOT increase the validity of visas already issued.  To obtain a visa with extended validity, holders of valid or recently-expired visas will need to apply again.  Please note that many visa applicants are eligible for the Interview Waiver Program under which an interview may not be required; more information on IWP processing can be found at www.ustraveldocs.com . 

Q:  Will U.S. citizens receive ten-year tourism and business visitor visas in China?  

Because this is a reciprocal arrangement, the Chinese government is committed to issuing visas valid for up to the same duration.

Q:  What happens if U.S. citizens aren’t issued ten-year tourist visas?  Will anything change for Chinese nationals?  

The arrangement is based on reciprocity.  Chinese nationals will be afforded the same maximum validity for B-category visas as U.S. citizens are afforded when applying for an equivalent visa category.  

Q:  When will other classifications of visas have longer validity?  Why don’t other classifications of visas have long validity?

The United States and China continue to discuss visa validity for other classes of visas.  All such decisions are made on a reciprocal basis.  At the same time, it is important to note that in FY2014, business, tourist, student, and exchange visitor visas represented 97 percent of all nonimmigrant visa applications processed in China for Chinese citizens.  

Q: Will dependent family members of students and exchange visitors also be eligible for these increases in visa validity?

Yes, all qualified dependent family members of students and exchange visitors will be eligible for these same increases in visa validity.

Q: Can I apply for a ten-year visa if I am a Chinese national living in a country other than China?

Yes, maximum visa validity is determined by the reciprocity arrangement with the country that issued your passport and not the country in which you apply.

In the United States, you can extend your B-2 visa by completing and submitting the appropriate form. You must make your application to extend your visa before it expires, otherwise you will have to claim “extraordinary circumstances.” To begin your application, you should download the appropriate form and find supporting documentation that shows your stay will be temporary. The U.S. has complete discretion about whether to extend your visa, so you shouldn’t assume that your request will be granted.

Completing the Application

• You do not have to complete a form for every person in your family. Instead, you can include your spouse and unmarried children under age 21 on your form. Everyone must have a B-2 tourist visa.

• Someone stole your passport and other travel documents, or you lost them.
• You attempted to file a request for an extension but it was returned to you.

Drafting a Written Statement

• If you need to extend your stay because of an emergency, then state that reason as well.

• Give USCIS the date and flight number for your new departure flight. Of course, you can’t book it until your visa extension is approved, but you can tell USCIS the day and time you intend to leave.

• Generally, it should have no impact. You can explain that you are not intending to move permanently to the U.S. and that your job and home still wait for your return in your home country.

• Bank accounts showing that you have enough money to support yourself. If you have online banking, then you can access this information from a computer in the U.S.
• Pay stubs or other proof of income. You might not have this information with you. Instead, you might need friends back home to mail you this information, so plan ahead.
• Proof that you have a permanent home in your home country. USCIS wants to make sure you aren’t trying to stay in the U.S. indefinitely.
• A letter from a friend or family member stating that they will provide you support while you are in the U.S.

Submitting Your Application

• You will have to download your Form I-94 if you entered the U.S. at an air or sea port of entry. You can get a copy for free by visiting the U.S. Customs and Border Control website. You will have to provide your name, birth date, and passport number.
• USCIS still issues paper I-94 forms if you entered the U.S. at a land port of entry.

• Your check will be converted to an electronic funds transfer (EFT).

• You committed a crime in the U.S.
• You spent time in the U.S. doing something other than being a tourist. For example, you might have started working a job, which a B-2 visa does not give you permission to do.

If the printed expiry date has passed and you’re applying for a visitor visa, study permit, work permit or to extend your stay as a temporary resident in Canada, follow these steps:

• Add 5 years to the printed expiry date shown on your passport and enter it in the expiry date field of the application form.
• Include a letter of explanation with your application stating: “I am a Venezuelan national with a Venezuelan passport, which has been extended for 5 years”.

Warning: If your passport is still expired after adding 5 years to the printed expiry date, your passport is considered expired. You’re not eligible to submit an application with that passport.

Step 3: Prepare your answers for the online tool

Before you can upload your forms, you must answer some questions. We use your answers to create a personalized document checklist for you. To apply for a visitor record, you must provide these answers in the online tool:

• For the first question “What would you like to do in Canada?”, select “Visit.”
• When asked “What is your current country/territory of residence?”, select “Canada.”

What to do if you can’t apply online

Credit cards and prepaid cards

We accept credit cards and prepaid cards from:

The card you use doesn't have to be in your name. The cardholder’s name will appear on the receipt but it does not need to match your application.

UAE updates visa on arrival list for citizens of 87 countries

Abu Dhabi: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced an update to its visa exemption policy, allowing citizens from 87 countries to enter the UAE without needing a pre-entry visa.

The initiative aims to simplify travel for tourists and foster a more accessible visitation process to the country.

According to the updated regulations, nationals from 110 countries are required to obtain a visa prior to their arrival in the UAE.

Interested individuals can consult the list of exempted countries and visa requirements on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (https://www.mofa.gov.ae/en/visa-exemptions-for-non-citizen) or contact the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Ports Security, and Customs (ICP) for additional information.

The UAE Digital Government clarified that GCC citizens do not need a visa or sponsorship to visit the country. They are eligible for entry by presenting a passport issued by a GCC state or an identity card upon arrival at UAE ports of entry.

Furthermore, individuals abroad are urged to visit the provided link (https://www.visitdubai.com/en/plan-your-trip/visa-information) to access the list of nationalities exempt from prior visa arrangements. Those eligible can obtain a valid entry visa for 30 days upon arrival, with a grace period of 10 days. Additionally, citizens from select countries can obtain a visa for 90 days upon arrival.

For example, citizens of India holding ordinary passports, a visit visa or permanent resident card issued by the USA, or a residence visa in the UK and European Union countries valid for at least six months, allows for a visa on arrival. This grants a stay of 14 days, with the option to extend for an additional 14 days.

In cases where prior visa arrangements are necessary, individuals not falling under visa exemption categories must obtain an entry permit issued by a sponsor before arriving in the UAE. The type of entry permit required, issued by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, depends on the purpose of the visit.

Secretary Mayorkas Announces Extension and Redesignation of Burma (Myanmar) for Temporary Protected Status

WASHINGTON – Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas today announced the extension and redesignation of Burma for Temporary Protected Status for 18 months, from May 26, 2024, to November 25, 2025, due to extraordinary and temporary conditions in Burma that prevent individuals from safely returning. The corresponding Federal Register notice provides information about how to register as a new first-time applicant or current beneficiary for TPS under Burma’s extension and redesignation.

After consultation with interagency partners, Secretary Mayorkas determined that an 18-month TPS extension and redesignation are warranted because conditions that support Burma’s TPS designation are ongoing. Burma’s democratically elected civilian government was overthrown in a military coup on February 1, 2021, giving rise to further widespread violence that continues to put individuals in Burma at significant risk. Burma also continues to face challenges in the provision of food, access to health care, and economic stability.

Accompanying this announcement is a Special Student Relief notice for F-1 nonimmigrant students whose country of citizenship is Burma so that eligible students may request employment authorization, work an increased number of hours while school is in session, and reduce their course load while continuing to maintain F-1 status through the TPS designation period.

The extension of TPS for Burma allows approximately 2,300 current beneficiaries to retain TPS through November 25, 2025, if they continue to meet TPS eligibility requirements. The redesignation of Burma for TPS allows an estimated 7,300 additional nationals of Burma (or individuals having no nationality who last habitually resided in Burma) to file initial applications to obtain TPS, if they are otherwise eligible and if they established residence in the United States on or before March 21, 2024, and have continued to reside in the United States since then.

Re-registration is limited to individuals who previously registered for and were granted TPS under Burma’s prior designation. Current beneficiaries under TPS for Burma must re-register in a timely manner during the 60-day re-registration period from March 25, 2024, through May 24, 2024, to ensure they keep their TPS and employment authorization.

The Department of Homeland Security recognizes that not all re-registrants may receive a new Employment Authorization Document (EAD) before their current EAD expires and is automatically extending through May 25, 2025, the validity of EADs previously issued under Burma’s TPS designation. When the registration period for TPS for Burma opens on March 25, 2024, new registrants who are granted TPS and who filed an approved Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, under this announcement for extension and redesignation will be issued an EAD for 18 months that will be valid through November 25, 2025.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will continue to process pending applications filed under previous TPS designations for Burma. Individuals with a pending Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status , or a related Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization , as of March 25, 2024 do not need to file either application again. If USCIS approves a pending Form I-821 or Form I-765 filed under the previous designation of TPS for Burma, USCIS will grant the individual TPS through November 25, 2025, and issue an EAD valid through the same date.

Under the redesignation of Burma, eligible individuals who do not have TPS may submit an initial Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status , during the initial registration period that runs from March 25, 2024, through November 25, 2025. Applicants also may apply for TPS-related EADs and for travel authorization. Applicants can request an EAD by submitting a completed Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization , with their Form I-821, or separately later.

The Federal Register notice explains eligibility criteria, timelines, and procedures necessary for current beneficiaries to re-register and renew EADs, and for new applicants to submit an initial application under the redesignation and apply for an EAD.
