Space Art in Star Trek: The Next Generation
by Jörg Hillebrand , Bernd Schneider, Rick Sternbach, Dave Archer and Mike Okuda
List of Pictures Addendum
In all Star Trek series there are various pictures and other pieces of wall decoration to let the crew quarters and lounges of the ships appear more attractive. TNG was no exception. Some items are of special interest, such as the space-themed photos and paintings that appeared from the first to the mid-fifth season. After that these pictures disappeared from the series. They were replaced with a number of pastel-colored round or angular wall decorations that also found their way to Voyager.
Much of the space artwork was created by Rick Sternbach, who would lend the items to the production. The second regular contributor to TNG was Dave Archer, whose special expertise is Tesla coil painting . More art along similar lines was contributed by Mike Okuda. This article provides a summary of all space-themed artwork that was visible in TNG. As usual, Jörg has compiled for each painting in which places and in which episodes they could be seen. In addition, we could find out with Rick Sternbach's support who created the paintings, what exactly is depicted on them and what they were originally created for (sometimes for covers of sci-fi magazines and books). Rick also provided clearer images of several of his works that can be seen in the column "picture".
The paintings are listed roughly chronologically by their first appearances.
List of Pictures
Versatile pictures.
Each of the following pictures with more or less generic (and hence versatile) motifs such as moons, planets, stars and nebulae appeared in various episodes, usually in more than one place, and sometimes in different shapes and sizes.
Note 1) Rick Sternbach: "The origins of the Denkiri name came from a non-Trek SF story I was dabbling with as far back as 1971, inspired by Arthur Clarke's Second Dawn, at least by the descriptions of the intelligent, quasi-mammalian, three-legged creatures. I made mine four-legged. Humans arrive at Denkir IV on a scout ship preceding two big colony vessels by maybe eighteen months. Eight out of the nine scout crew die from a nasty virus that escaped detection after almost a full year of medical research, the ninth guy (engineer type) survives but doesn't know why. Long story short, he leaves the camp for a while, discovers the Denkiri, communicates with them, concludes after a couple of months that once the virus thing is solved, the colony command may not want to be friends. Typical clash of cultures, very Avatar-like, but *way* before Avatar. Very Dances with Wolves, very Pocahontas. :) The story synopsis could probably be reworked a lot to avoid recent similarities; it's one of those things chucked in a box somewhere in the garage. Anyhow, some bits of art were generated while the story ideas were coming together, and I was able to put them to use on TNG when John Dwyer (lead set decorator) asked if I had anything he could photographically enlarge for the walls during first season."
Note 2) Dave Archer on painting with high voltage: "The coils I use for painting in various 'reverse glass' techniques, are designed and fabricated by engineering genius, Bill Wysock, at his company: 'Tesla Technology,' in Monrovia, California. [...] Bill Wysock's list of Tesla accomplishments is a long roll of movie credits. His coils have been used for special effects in many films, commercials, massive outdoor shows, and worldwide installations.
Having used my Bill Wysock, Tesla painting machine for decades, I stake my claim as the first in the world on that score. And I think Tesla would have enjoyed the paintings I make using his invention. How lucky I feel then, that my machines are built and maintained by one of Tesla's true successors.
I paint with two different Wysock coils in my studio. The large one produces nine foot arcs from the tip of an insulated rod hanging over the glass, which is raised from the floor by heavy duty insulators. [...] The rod is six feet long, and since the arcs can be as long as nine feet, for safety, I hold a ground wire in my hands, gripping it to the handle of the rod. Paints are slurried on the glass, then hit with arcs, which can be flashed on by the use of a foot switch, or by an assistant standing some distance away. I prefer an assistant because it is hard locate the foot switch in the dark wearing giant rubber boots, and even harder to 'feel' the right angle, and pressure, to set off a fine, safe, burst of working arcs.
Using the other of Bill's coils, my actual body becomes the path to ground. With a metal rod held tightly in my hands, I reach out toward the wet paint on the glass. The glass lies flat atop the coil, while the high voltage arcs are attracted through the paint to my body. 'Skin effect' plays a major role with this machine. High frequency electricity flows invisibly over the skin to the floor, thus to ground, while I remain relatively safe. That is, standing on an insulated platform, or wearing insulated boots. I do feel the power in my arms, shoulders and neck. After years of working with high voltage in this way, I required months of weekly massage sessions called 'trigger point' therapy to release cramped muscles. The painting boots I like best are massive rubber boots normally used in Antarctica to keep feet from freezing into bricks, with cube-trays for toes."
Definite pictures
The following pictures, depicting definite vessels or structures in space, shouldn't remain unmentioned. Their locations on the ship were usually fixed.
Note 3) Rick Sternbach: "When we created Picard's quarters on Stage 8, using the general high-class quarters set opposite Ten-Forward, there was again a blank spot on a wall behind his desk, so I was asked to create a painting to fill in the area. I suggested a space station over a planet, and the significance could be that it was a station Picard served on early in his career. I did the art in a style slightly reminiscent of Bob McCall's, one of my favorite space artists. Exactly where was the station? Not a clue. Could be a predecessor of Jupiter Station, since the basic form is the same (saucer, vertical core, etc.). Could be a different star system. I really don't think I considered the specifics when I painted it. I do know it took me about sixteen hours to paint over a couple of days."
Gradual replacement of space art on TNG
Rick Sternbach on how his artwork found its way into the show: "Most of the stuff I contributed was for the early seasons, and set decorator John Dwyer was a really good guy to agree to let me help."
After the first season Jim Mees took over the position as a set decorator. In "The Outrageous Okona" we can see a new form of wall decoration for the first time, the already mentioned pastel-colored abstract pictures that would completely replace the space art since the fifth season. We can see the same artwork in Voyager too.
In the DVD special features of the sixth TNG season Jim Mees tells us about the rationale for the change: "The artwork in the first year of the show was primarily photographic stars or pictures of rocket ships and things like that. My sensibility was that the last thing you need to see on the wall as a piece of art when you're in outer space anyway and you've got these beautiful windows that open up to the real stars why would you want a photograph of a star or a galaxy or the Milky Way? So what I did was start to redevelop that look and made it more "art pieces", pieces that had color and used a different kind of sense of form."
Notable space art after TNG
Dave Archer provided the decoration for the Starfleet Headquarters briefing room in "Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country". We can barely see the side walls of the set in the movie because the scene is dark, but five distinct pictures can be identified.
Dave Archer also created a painting aptly called "Nexus" that prominently appears in Guinan's quarters in "Star Trek Generations". The same painting can be seen in her bar in PIC: "The Star Gazer", some 28 years later.

Designing The Next Generation’s Engineering
The details of how warp drive operated were not fully realized by the time Star Trek: The Next Generation went into production. It was Rick Sternbach who decided that main engineering was where the matter/antimatter reaction needed for faster-than-light space travel would form.
The vertical warp core had already been introduced in Star Trek: The Motion Picture . The thinking at the time was that the antimatter would be in a magnetic containment at the bottom of the engineering hull, sending antimatter up into the reaction chamber.
The shaft above engineering, however, did not make sense. There was no place where the “matter” was coming from.
Sternbach solved this problem by placing deuterium tanks at the top of the Enterprise -D’s warp core, which provided the necessary matter.
“When the time came to do TNG, Mike Okuda and I sat down over many pizzas and bowls of noodles to compile and clarify all of the information we had on impulse, warp, power generation and so on,” Sternbach told Forgotten Trek in 2007 .
The Original Series touched on many of these concepts but wasn’t clear or consistent, so we wrote a lot of memos which eventually became the TNG Technical Manual .
The engineering set was a redress of The Motion Picture ’s on Paramount’s Stage 9. Construction had originally begun in 1977 for the aborted second Star Trek television series, Phase II . Mike Minor had designed the set for Phase II , Harold Michelson updated it for The Motion Picture .
The structural elements of the second floor were kept intact for The Next Generation . The rest of the set was rebuilt. It was given an open floor plan, with several corridors providing access to the room.
Light fixtures were added to either side of the master systems display midway through the first season. The display itself changed from green to blue in Season 3.
The “pool table” was introduced in “No Where No One Has Gone Before”. Early in the episode, the main corridor passing through the set was still half-open. Toward the end, the same doorframe is walled off with a console. It would be permanently blocked from Season 2 onward.
The entire area was frequently redressed as a large corridor junction to allow for longer walking scenes.
The set was redressed again to become the engine room of Voyager . A separate engineering set was built for Star Trek: First Contact , but it reused the warp core of The Next Generation .
The engine room was NOT redressed for First Contact , because after the end of Generations , it was redressed to become the Voyager ’s engine room. The First Contact set was completely new.
You’re right! I’ll update the article.
Even in Star Trek Generations the corridor is open, when Riker leaves main engeering after seeing the Romulan disruptor.

Data and His Artistic Pursuits
Exploring the sentient android's many interests.
StarTrek.com
The characters of Star Trek: The Next Generation engage in artistic endeavors in many of the show’s 179 episodes.
Commander William Riker plays jazz music, while Captain Jean-Luc Picard has his interests in Shakespeare and Ressikan music. Dr. Beverly Crusher directs plays and Worf enjoys Klingon opera. This constant attention to art and creativity in the narratives of The Next Generation represents the Star Trek theme that in the future, humanity will improve itself. "We work to better ourselves and the rest of humanity," reveals Picard in Star Trek: First Contact . The fictional characters of TNG are what writer Henry Miller called “truly alive.”
Ironic, then, that the most artistically active character from TNG is an android. Data is a robotic version of Pinocchio, wishing to obtain the human emotions he was denied by design. Data realizes that the quest, in comparison to the boon, is more meaningful, and he wishes to learn about the human experience despite his lack of emotions. He will not be human physically, but art provides him an appreciation for humanity. Indeed, art and creativity are Data’s textbooks of understanding. “You are here to learn about the human condition and there's no better way than embracing Shakespeare,” Picard teaches as he coaches Data in a play as King Henry (“The Defector”).
Data engages in numerous art forms — poetry (“Schisms”), painting (“Birthright”), acting (“The Defector” and “Emergence”), violin (“Sarek”), oboe (“In Theory”), and singing ( Star Trek: Insurrection and Star Trek Nemesis ).
Data is sometimes successful at his art, and, at other times, the crew reacts with trepidation and incredulousness at his poems or painting. With poetry, such as Data’s “Ode to Spot” written for his cat, it is understandable that the crew is often uncertain how to react to the android’s art:
“O Spot, the complex levels of behavior you displayconnote a fairly well-developed cognitive arrayAnd though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehendI nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend" — Data ("Schisms")
The reason why Data's art is successful sometimes and other times — not quite so — may be found in the ideas of poet Sir Stephen Spender who believed that the necessary traits of artists are concentration, memory, inspiration, faith and song.
Data obviously has very little problem with concentration being an android. In “A Matter of Time,” he explains his ability to listen to 150 different musical compositions at the same time, yet reveals that “in order to analyze the aesthetics, I try to limit myself to ten or less.” His memory is no slouch either, sharing with Commander Riker, “I remember every fact I am exposed to, sir.” Data also possesses the inspiration to be a good artist. He is inspired by his fellow crew, from Captain Picard who challenges him to learn about humanity through acting in Shakespeare’s plays, to Dr. Beverly Crusher who offers advice on the arts. He expresses delights in everyday experiences, from growing a beard (“The Schizoid Man”) to learning about Sherlock Holmes (“Elementary, Dear Data”).
If Data has a problem, it may be that he is short sometimes on faith and song, at least in the sense that Spender defines the terms. Confidence in one’s artistry is what Spender means by faith and confidence in one’s own unique voice is the song. The most common criticism of Data’s art by his fellow crew is that he should stop imitating the works of others, and start expressing his own experiences.
For example, in "The Defector," after Picard credits Data with a fine performance of King Henry, the android reveals he has been studying the performances of famous thespians, to which Picard chides him, “You must discover it through your own performance, not by imitating." When recommending ways to improve his poetry, Geordi advises, “Next time, don't worry so much about rhyme and meter. Some of the world's greatest poets didn't pay attention to rules.” Spender and Geordi might suggest that Data needs to listen to his own proverbial voice.
It is when Data imitates — when he does not show confidence in his own art (voice) and own voice (song) — that his art doesn't quite reach the levels he hopes. The paintings and poems aren’t really failures, though, because artistic endeavors are never really failures. Indeed, it is Data’s desire to try to be an artist that is most important. Data is inspired to learn about humanity through art. And when Data looks at his artistic expressions and endeavors, he too can claim, as Spender does, “What failures there are!”

The 'Star-Spangled Banner': On National Anthem Day, watch 5 notable performances
Sunday is "National Anthem Day" which marks the day that the "Star-Spangled Banner" was adopted as the country's national anthem
Francis Scott Key wrote the poem that would eventually become The "Star-Spangled Banner" in 1814 to commemorate the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812. The United States Navy recognized the song in 1889 and President Woodrow Wilson declared it the anthem of the country's armed forces in 1916
The first documented instance of the song being played at a sporting event was in 1862, the tradition was popularized by the 1918 World Series.
The song was played spontaneously during the seventh-inning stretch of the opening game between the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs. According to the New York Times the Chicago crowd gave the performance a, "thunderous applause and rent the air with a cheer that marked the highest point of the day’s enthusiasm." When the series moved back to Boston, Red Sox owner Harry Frazee had the song played before the game
Calvin Coolidge signed a bill to make the "Star-Spangled Banner" the country's national anthem on March 3, 1931.
Here are five notable performances of the "Star-Spangled Banner".
Whitney Houston Super Bowl XXV 1991
Days into the First Gulf War, Whitney Houston provided the nation a lasting glimpse of patriotic naivete. A bombastic rendition of the country's anthem delivered on the heels of Cold War victory but before entrenchment in the Middle East, a bombing in Oklahoma City and a school shooting in Colorado. It is often listed as the best version of the anthem, earning its spot through technical excellence and Houston's unmatched presence.
Jimi Hendrix: Woodstock Music and Arts Festival 1969
On a dairy farm in upstate New York, Jimi Hendrix performed a version of the national anthem that encapsulated the spirit of a generation. If Houston's rendition was American optimism at its zenith, Hendrix's reinterpretation was American cynicism blended with a demand for change. Hendrix's wailing guitar can soundtrack Vietnam or Civil Rights protest footage or hippy hedonism and be equally at home with either.
Marvin Gaye: NBA All Star Game 1983
While the culture of a decade often bleeds outside the calendar's measure, Marvin Gaye's performance of the anthem at the 1983 NBA All Star Game announced that the 80's were here. Performed at The Forum in Inglewood, California during the rise of the "Showtime" era of the Los Angeles Lakers Gaye looked the part of what 80's Hollywood wanted to see itself as: slick, smooth and seductive. He delivers in a way that only a soul singer of his caliber could.
Rosanne Barr: San Diego Padres vs. Cincinatti Reds 1990
One year before Houston's last gasp of unbridled patriotism, the sports world caught a glimpse of the coming wave of cynicism that would define the 1990's. Rosanne Barr screeched her way through the song ahead of a game between the lowly San Diego Padres and the soon to be World Series champion Cincinatti Reds, ending the performance by spitting and grabbing her crotch.
The problems for the performance have since been pinned on the sound delay in the stadium and Barr starting the song on too high of a note. Barr told the Washington Post that the crotch grab and spit were a mocking of habits of baseball players. Barr was thoroughly criticized for the performance with then President George H.W. Bush calling the performance, "disgraceful" eventually resulting in an apology from the comedienne.
Carl Lewis: Chicago Bulls vs New Jersey Nets 1993
There are some people who should stick to what they are good at.
Carl Lewis took a swing at the anthem ahead of a game between the Chicago Bulls and New Jersey Nets on January 21, 1993. The first few bars are passable but when Lewis reaches "when the rockets" the performance falls off the tracks and winds up somewhere in the New Jersey swamplands.
Notably called 'Francis Scott off-Key' by then ESPN anchor Charlie Steiner the performance has stuck with Lewis since that night.
"I'm actually glad it happened because it's a part of your journey," Lewis told Oprah.com , "The great thing about it, you know, is kids will come up and they'll say, 'Oh, I saw your anthem. Boy, I didn't realize you were that fast.'"

Star Trek episode predicting ‘Irish unification of 2024’ was banned for decades
A Star Trek episode predicting the " Irish unification of 2024" was banned for decades , it has been revealed.
The episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, titled The High Ground, featured a scene in which the android character Data, played by Brent Spiner, mentions the " Irish unification of 2024" as an example of violence achieving a political aim.
The episode was broadcast in the US in 1990 but there was so much apprehension surrounding the scene that the episode was not shown on RTÉ in Ireland or the BBC in the UK.
- Mary Lou McDonald 'will make it easier for emigrants to come home' to Ireland
Sinéad O’Connor estate demands music is not used at Trump rallies as singer would be 'disgusted and insulted'
In the episode, Data says: "I've been reviewing the history of armed rebellion , and it appears that terrorism is an effective way to promote political change.”
Patrick Stewart’s character, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, responds: "Yes it can be, but I have never subscribed to the theory that political power flows from the barrel of a gun."
"Yet there are numerous examples of when it was successful," Data continues . "The independence of the Mexican state from Spain, the Irish unification of 2024, and the Kenzie rebellion."
"I'm aware of them," Picard says, to which Data asks: "Would it then be accurate to say that terrorism is acceptable when all options for peaceful settlement have been foreclosed?"
"Data, these are questions that mankind has been struggling with throughout history. Your confusion is only human."
At the time, US TV shows did not typically air until many years after their original debut. Sky showed an edited version of the Star Trek episode in 1992 but cut the controversial scene, according to the BBC.
The High Ground was not aired on the BBC until 29 September 2007 at 2.39am, though, which the BBC Archives states was its only transmission. RTÉ noted that TV guides from the time indicate it had broadcast Star Trek: The Next Generation, but did not have further information.
- Sinn Fein's Michelle O'Neill stands for British national anthem as she attends first Northern Ireland game
United Ireland soccer team would be 'a dream come true'
Melinda M Snodgrass wrote the episode but did not anticipate the impact the line could have in a politically tense Northern Ireland . She told the BBC: "We became aware of it later... and there isn't much you can do about it. Writing for television is like laying track for a train that's about 300 feet behind you. You don't have time to stop.
"Science fiction is incredibly important because it allows people to discuss difficult topics - but at arm's length. I was a history major... and I wanted to... discuss the fact that one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist.
"These are complicated issues and when do people feel like their back is so much against the wall that they have no choice but to turn to violence ? And is that actually ever justified?
"What I wanted to say was, if we're talking and not shooting, we're in a better place. 2024 seemed a long way away. I should have made it 2224! I just pulled that number and it didn't occur to me that suddenly we would be here."
Social media went wild with people sharing screenshots of Data's prediction and drawing links to the current state of play where Sinn Féin is the largest party in the devolved Stormont assembly and the party's leader in Northern Ireland , Michelle O'Neill, last month became first minister, predicting a referendum on Irish unity within a decade.
One user wrote: "TNG's banned episode mentioning Irish Unification is uncannily on track for 2024. Fascinating how fiction intersects with reality."
Another wrote: "I saw Star Trek Next Generation had an episode banned by the BBC AND in all of Ireland in 1990. Why? Because of how it referred to Irish Unification in 2024. It’s funny because not only is Sinn Féin now a normal co-ruling party in Ulster but Unionists accept it."
A third commented: "Star trek timeline is happening? Quick, can the Irish get unification done in 2024?" while a fourth concluded: "Not too far out."
