STATUS QUO's Francis Rossi Reflects On 1986 Tour With QUEEN - "It Was Immense... We Had A Fabulous Time"

July 31, 2013, 10 years ago

hot flashes news queen status quo

Songfacts' Greg Prato has issued an interview with frontman Francis Rossi of long-running UK rockers STATUS QUO. As well as discussing the band's new album, Bula Quo!, he also talks about opening for QUEEN on their last-ever tour with late frontman FREDDIE MERCURY in 1986.

Q: I've always been a big fan of Queen, and I noticed Status Quo opened up for them on their last ever tour with Freddie Mercury, back in 1986.

A: "Uh huh. That was one time we did a so called "comeback tour", and somebody said, 'Do you want to go out with Freddie and the boys?' Rick's been big friends of theirs for years, and we knew that band really, really well. Still know that band well. And to us it was a great way of getting back on tour.

ROCKIN' ALL OVER THE WORLD TOUR 1977/78

status quo tour 1986

14.02.1978 -  the famous german film director Michael Verhoeven did a TV movie called "Verführungen" (Seductions) which was partly shoot during Quo's Berlin concert at the Deutschlandhalle, West-Germany on their "Rockin'all over the World Germany Tour". The film debuted in early 1979 and was broadcasted by german TV broadcaster ARD.

18.07.1978 - the longest tour of Australia, to promote the "Rockin' all over the World" album, kicked off at Newcastle Civic Theatre. The gig was unofficially recorded and released as a double-album vinyl bootleg, entitled "First Night Stand". Despite the poor quality of the recording, copies can command up to 250,- Euro.

26.08.1978 - Quo's second appearance at the Reading Festival gave UK fans their only chance to see Quo on home soil during 1978. The band were spending a tax year in various foreign locations (Francis in Ireland, Rick in Germany and USA, Alan in Australia and John on the Isle of Man).
