When it comes to food, you'll be spoilt for choice with the in-mall restaurants or venture out to Jalan Alor for a taste of hawker life in Malaysia.

Popular dishes here are the pig trotter bee hoon, oysters omelette, salted egg sotong and mud crab with black pepper.

DRINK Ah Ma Drink Stall

Stop by this iconic drink stall, housed in a distinctive blue structure in Jalan Jelutong, for a fresh coconut. Don't forget to say hi to the friendly Madam Ong Ang Kui, who has been running the stall for more than 20 years.

DO Soak in everything Pulau Ubin has to offer

There's plenty to do: whether you choose to cycle its unpaved trails, hike up hills for stunning views of abandoned granite quarries, kayak the circumference of the island, or dust off your binoculars out to watch the kingfishers and bulbul birds that inhabit the tidal flats and mangroves. STAY Set up camp

While you can't stay in a hotel on Pulau Ubin, you can embrace the island's wilderness and set up a tent at one of the three campsites on the island: namely Jelutong, Mamam, and Endut Senin. Mamam Campsite boasts uninterrupted views of the sea, with Malaysia in the background.

If you do just one thing... Wander around Chek Jawa Wetlands, one of Singapore's richest ecosystems. A 1.1km boardwalk runs along the coast and mangrove area, giving visitors a chance to get closer to nature. After which, climb up a 20-metre-tall viewing tower for a 360-degree panorama of the island.

Johor Bahru

Cross the causeway via public transport or in the comfort of your car from Woodlands Checkpoint and you'll find yourself in the heart of Johor Bahru. The JB immigration building is directly connected to City Square Mall, where you can find brands such as H&M and Uniqlo priced more affordable, thanks to the strong Singapore dollar. The surrounding area is also home to plenty of cool restaurants and cafés where you can while the day away.

EAT The Replacement – Lodge and Kitchen

Out of all the cafés we've been to in Johor Bahru, The Replacement – Lodge and Kitchen undoubtedly serve the best food. Try the soft shell crab bao and the piping hot churros served with your choice of dip: there's salted caramel, dark chocolate, Nutella hazelnut and salted egg yolk to choose from.

DRINK Bev C

Johor Bahru isn't exactly known for its buzzy bar scene so swap the booze out for some caffeine instead. The house special at Bev C is the espresso ice cube: shots of coffee frozen into ice cubes served with some milk.

DO Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park

Just a half an hour drive from Johor Sentral lies Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park. The family-friendly theme park is home to the Supersurf, a waterslide with six high-speed lanes.

STAY Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru

Conveniently situated within JB Sentral, Doubletree by Hilton makes for the perfect base for exploring the rest of the city. The modern hotel also comes equipped with a swimming pool and gym to work off those calories from all that café hopping.

If you do just one thing... Queue up for buns baked in a charcoal oven at Hiap Joo Bakery. The banana cake at this old-school institution is unbeatable too – we guarantee you won't stop at one slice.

Iskandar Puteri

Home to some of Southeast Asia’s most epic theme parks like Legoland Malaysia and the Hello Kitty Indoor Theme Park, the thriving city of Iskandar Puteri is well worth crossing the causeway for – especially with the kids in tow.

EAT Spice Grill

Leave the touristy eats at the theme parks behind and make the drive down to Puteri Harbour instead. There, you'll be greeted by a host of better options such as Spice Grill, a stylish Indian restaurant that also has Western offerings.

Most Singaporeans go on a holiday once a year, even if that means Johor Bahru, Bangkok or Batam. There’s just nothing like a getaway to restore sanity and recharge our morale after gruelling 44-hour work weeks.

The good thing is, you don’t need to spend a few thousand bucks to visit a place halfway across the globe to enjoy yourself. There are plenty of cheap holiday destinations nearby where your SGD can go even further than you do.

1. Bali, Indonesia

Bali offers something for just about every type of traveler. If you want to experience a fun nightlife, mingle with tourists from around the globe, there’s Kuta.

If you want to detox from the daily grind of congested MRT stations and malls, there’s Ubud, Uluwatu, and Nusa Dua. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. You can surf, golf, hik, trek, dive, and visit some magnificent temples on this island paradise.

Water sports enthusiasts will also love to go scuba diving, parasailing, or snorkeling. Outdoors activities such as canyoning, hiking, mountain biking, and whitewater rafting are also available.

2. Bangkok, Thailand

You don’t need us to tell you what’s great about Bangkok! It’s arguably the best city for shopping in Asia (sorry Singapore), and it has amazing nightlife. For this reason, we’d recommend scrimping on flights and accommodation to budget more for shopping and entertainment.

But Bangkok is more than just a commercial paradise ; it’s also full of magnificent cultural sites that must be visited at least once, such as Wat Arun and the Grand Palace.

If you fly on a budget airline, a return flight to Bangkok costs just under $200 from Singapore.

Lodging in Bangkok varies according to the area you’re staying at, but it’s not hard to find a good hotel for as low as $50 a night if you book with Agoda . For instance, Baiyoke Boutique Hotel costs under $44 per person per night for an excellent location in the Pratunam area.

3. Pulau Langkawi, Malaysia

Pulau Langkawi is like a cheaper, cleaner, quieter, and less congested version of Phuket. Maybe that’s why it has earned the nickname “The Jewel of Kedah,” and UNESCO World Geopark status.

If you’re looking for a destination offering plenty of beautiful scenery, adventurous activities, and a quieter but lively nightlife without the sleaziness of other locations, Langkawi is a destination you can’t pass up!

Lodging in Langkawi varies according to the area you’re staying at, but it can get really cheap if you are not picky. You can find a good hotel for as low as $20 a night. A comfortable choice like Resorts World Langkawi , located just 2.4 km from the city centre, costs $76 per night for two guests.

4 . Krabi, Thailand

One of Thailand’s must-see destinations, Krabi is known for spanning over 150 islands that offer visitors what they can’t get in their home countries – pristine, secluded beaches and diving spots that aren’t overrun by tourists and cargo ships (think: Sentosa).

You can partake in the usual water activities as well as go island and beach hopping. Make sure to visit Poda Island, Tup Island, and Koh Phi Phi at least! If that’s not your thing, you can always visit the many scenic temples (Tiger Cave Temple), go rock climbing, or watch some Muay Thai matches.

5 . Ha Long Bay (Bai Chay), Vietnam

If you’re taking a short holiday at the end of this year, why not spend it visiting one of the most beautiful locations in Asia – Ha Long Bay. It’s one of Vietnam’s most iconic holiday destinations primarily for its beautiful and secluded grottoes, lagoons, semi-inhabited islands, and beaches.

Just keep in mind that even though the Vietnam Dong is the national currency, you should bring along at least $200 USD in smaller denominations just in case. And make sure you sharpen your bargaining skills before you go!

In between Singapore and Kukup , you can stop by a pineapple farm or two to see how the spiky acidic fruit grows!

Upon reaching Kukup, you can start to explore the fishing village:

Try local snacks like fried shrimp cake
Take a walk through the mangroves ( Kukup National Park )

Retire to your resort in Kukup for a seafood barbeque and karaoke session!
Begin the day with fish porridge for breakfast
Short visit to a local fish farm
Grab some local goods like belacan or keropok

How To Go To Kukup From Singapore:

40 minutes is the estimated duration time to Kukup from Singapore.

Public transport is inconvenient to reach a place as rural as Kukup. So you may want to hire a private car service as they are well-acquainted with the roads!

13. Snorkel At Pulau Tioman

If you’re looking for options on short trips from Singapore to Malaysia, Pulau Tioman is one of the best islands from Mersing , Johor!

Among all the other islands in this region:

Tioman Island is comparatively well-equipped with resorts, restaurants, roads and a marine park center to accommodate visitors who throng the island particularly in the summer months!

Note: There are around 8 villages on the island.

How To Go To Tioman Island From Singapore:

To get to Tioman Island, you will have to take a ferry from Mersing Jetty or Tanjung Gemok Jetty .

The ferry trip takes anywhere between 1.5 to 2 hours .

Note: Getting to the jetties is a different story. On public holidays and long weekends, traffic is unavoidable which can extend the 3-hour journey to 6 hours (or more!) from Singapore

14. Explore Pulau Besar

Less than an hour away from Mersing Jetty , one of the ferry terminals in Johor .

Gorgeous Pulau Besar has yet to have become as well-known as Tioman Island still!

Which means you can pretty much have the island to yourself and a few other visitors!

Snorkeling is the main activity here!

Recommended Itinerary From Singapore To Pulau Besar:

After around 4 hours’ worth of traveling, you owe it to yourself to just soak in your surroundings and lounge on the pristine stretch of beach in front of you!

Maybe go for a swim or rent a canoe!

Note: There are dead corals in the water. Protect your feet with swimming shoes.

Take an early morning stroll from one side of the island to the other. Go snorkeling afterwards! That’s what you came for, isn’t it? Resorts typically offer snorkeling trips too.

Note: No fantastic reef immediately close to Pulau Besar but snorkeling is still enjoyable.

How To Go To Pulau Besar From Singapore:

You will find ferries for Pulau Besar at Mersing Jetty . The ferry takes around 30 minutes to reach the island!

15. Go Deep-sea Fishing Pulau Pemanggil

There are 2 things to highlight about Pulau Pemanggil :

First of all, there is the deep-sea fishing for marlin and mackerel!

And secondly, there is a mountain on the island where you can have panoramic views of the island and the ocean!

Recommended Itinerary From Singapore To Pulau Pemanggil:

Upon arrival, take in the views and head down to the rocky beach to see if you can spot the neighboring islands like Pulau Aur ! Sit down to dinner at your resort.

Wake up early for a spectacular sunrise.
Prepare for a full day snorkeling trip!
Visit Kampung Buau
Hike up Batu Buau .

Note: If you want to hike up Batu Buau , your resort may be able to arrange a hiking trip for you!

Time to leave Pulau Pemanggil for Singapore!

How To Go To Pulau Pemanggil From Singapore:

Getting to Pulau Pemanggil requires a 1.5-hour speedboat ride from Mersing Jetty . Check with your resort if they can arrange one for you!

Note: Be wary of the dates that you choose. A full moon or new moon can mean unfavourable tidal conditions (i.e. too low or too high) which greatly affects the boat schedules!

16. Have A Quiet Getaway On Pulau Tinggi

Another snorkeling and diving paradise but the one thing that sets Pulau Tinggi apart from the other islands is Mount Semundu !

This extinct volcano proves to be a challenging hike of 3 hours with rewarding views of Pulau Tinggi!

Recommended Itinerary From Singapore To Pulau Tinggi:

Check out the beach once you have put down your bag! At low tide, the strikingly clear water is a marvellous sight to behold!

Rent a kayak and get out onto that super transparent water!

Tip: This beach has sandflies. Do slap on a layer of repellent!

Go on an early morning hike to any of the 10 waterfalls on the island or Mount Semundu !

Join a snorkeling trip to Pulau Mentinggi.

Alas, time to pack up and say goodbye to Pulau Tinggi!

How To Go To Pulau Tinggi From Singapore:

Tanjung Leman Jetty is the departure point for Pulau Tinggi. From here, you will need a 45-minute speedboat trip which your resort should arrange for you.

There’s no direct bus to Tanjung Leman Jetty so it’s easier to drive here or better still, take a private car service so you don’t have to worry about leaving your car at the jetty overnight!

17. Live Island Life On Pulau Sibu

Pulau Sibu consists of 4 little islands (Pulau Sibu Tengah, Pulau Sibu Besar, Pulau Sibu Kukus and Pulau Sibu Hujung) which makes island hopping around this marine park a breeze!

With little marks of civilization (i.e. no roads and limited facilities), you can truly feel like you’re lost in paradise on this island!

You will see the coral and nemo fish when diving in Pulau Sibu

Reach Pulau Sibu. Take a stroll around the island through the resorts. Or rent a canoe!

Pulau Sibu is actually pretty close to Singapore. Do include in this your choice for short trips from Singapore.

The total journey time door-to-door is around 3 to 4 hours including the 20 to 45-minute boat transfers between Tanjung Leman Jetty and Pulau Sibu!

Again, you should book this boat service through your resort!

Travel Tips For Short Trips From Singapore To Malaysia

Best Short Trips from Singapore

One of the best things about living in Singapore is its proximity to all the incredible destinations that Southeast Asia has to offer. These are my favourite short trips from Singapore, all accessible with direct flights (or a ferry ride!). Start planning your Singapore weekend getaways now!

Singapore has the enviable position of being a short 1-3 hour flight from much of Southeast Asia. After living most of my life in the comparatively isolated countries of New Zealand and Australia, I’m constantly jamming in weekend getaways from Singapore and maximizing public holidays.

I’ve taken all these weekend trips from Singapore over 2 or 3 nights, and several as a solo female traveler, including Siem Reap, Bali and Yogyakarta. If you have the luxury of time, then they’re also all worth a longer break. (Except maybe Bintan / Batam … not so much going on there).

If you’re planning a short getaway from Singapore, read on for my top trips from Singapore, along with my favorite activities and accommodation. These getaways have all been road-tested by yours truly! Hard job, but someone’s gotta do it.

Top Short Trips and Weekend Getaways from Singapore

Without further ado, and in no particular order, here are my favourite Singapore weekend trips.

1. Hoi An, Vietnam

Why Visit Hoi An

Hoi An boasts one of the prettiest old towns in Southeast Asia, and is surrounded by lush countryside and tropical beaches. Plus Vietnamese food is to die for! It’s a direct 2h 45m flight from Singapore to Da Nang Airport. Hoi An is an easy 45 minute drive from Da Nang Airport.

What to do in Hoi An

In a nutshell: w ander around the picturesque Old Town, explore the countryside by bike (we loved our Heaven & Earth tour), hit the beach, join a cooking class or street food tour (we loved our Hoi An Street Food Tour by Motorbike ), and get some clothes tailored.

And don’t forget to gorge on Vietnamese street food and the local specialties in Hoi An! My favorites are the banh mi pork baguette (try Madam Khanh the Banh Mi Queen ), white rose dumplings and crispy wanton (try Miss Ly Cafe ). Seriously making my mouth water just writing this. Wash it down with a vino at White Marble Wine Bar while you watch the old town go by.

Where to Stay in Hoi An

My favorite area to stay in Hoi An is a short walk or bike ride from Hoi An’s atmospheric Old Town. I like to be close to the action, but not so close that you can’t sleep through the noise!

Villa Orchid Garden Riverside: My favorite Hoi An accommodation near the Old Quarter is Villa Orchid Garden Riverside . Villa Orchid Garden Riverside Hoi An is a very well priced boutique hotel. It’s in a quiet riverfront location, and is only a 10-minute bike ride to the Hoi An Ancient Town.

Hyatt Regency Da Nang: If you prefer to stay at the beach, the Hyatt Regency Da Nang Resort & Spa is a more luxe resort-style option on a lovely quiet stretch of white sandy beach. Da Nang is a bit of a drive from Hoi An, so this is a good choice for beach bums who only want to come into the Old Town for a day, or for a night or two at the end of a longer trip.

2. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Why Visit Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon) is a vibrant – if slightly chaotic – concrete jungle where you can uncover fascinating history and eat some of Vietnam’s best street food. Ho Chi Minh City is an easy 2 hour direct flight from Singapore, making it a great weekend trip from Singapore!

What to do in Ho Chi Minh City

Spend a day walking around District 1, where you’ll find most of Ho Chi Minh City’s top attractions. Step back in time at the Independence Palace (forever immortalised in the 1970s!), be prepared for a harrowing history lesson at the War Remnants Museum, and check out beautiful colonial architecture such as the People’s Committee Building, Notre Dame Cathedral and Post Office Building.

For all the foodies out there, take a street food tour to sample the best food Ho Chi Minh has to offer – just come prepared with an empty belly! Wash it down with a drink at one of the city’s best rooftop bars, like the Hotel Majestic with riverfront views or MGallery Hotel des Arts Saigon with city views.

If you can fit in a day trip, visit the Cu Chi Tunnels where you can learn about the Vietnam War and life in the underground tunnel network, or the Mekong Delta for a relaxing river cruise.

Where to Stay in Ho Chi Minh City

Luxe – Park Hyatt Saigon: Ho Chi Minh has a few luxury hotels to rival major global cities. If you want to splash out, you can’t beat the Park Hyatt Saigon , a gorgeous French-colonial style hotel slap bang in the middle of Ho Chi Minh’s best attractions. The only problem is that you may not want to leave the incredible hotel!

Mid-Range – Alagon D’antique Hotel & Spa: Ho Chi Minh has excellent good value boutique hotels. Check out Alagon D’antique Hotel for a lovely boutique hotel with French colonial touches, just a short walk from the main District 1 attractions.

3. Siem Reap, Cambodia

Why Visit Siem Reap

Temples, temples and more temples! I’ve seen many a temple in my time, and the Angkor Temples are a contender for the most impressive historical structures in Asia. Singapore to Siem Reap is a direct 2h 15m flight . Easy!

What to do in Siem Reap

Temples: Of course, the best thing to do in Siem Reap is to visit the incredible Angkor Wat temple complex. My favorites are the popular temples of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom / Bayon and Ta Prohm, the small but pretty Banteay Srei and the quieter Rolous Group. As a bonus, check out Preah Khan and Pre Rup. The best way to visit the temples is to hire a tuk tuk and feel the (hot humid) wind in your hair.

Other Activities: Once you’re all templed out, visit the Wat Themy Killing Fields (small monument with historical information) and the interesting Angkor National Museum, or relax at one of the lovely day spas.

Where to Stay in Siem Reap

Luxe – Shinta Mani: For a little bit of luxe, stay at Shinta Mani Shack . Shinta Mani is a a boutique hotel with stylish black and white house decor, excellent service, and an awesome pool surrounded by tranquil gardens. It’s also just a short walk from the Pub Street restaurants, and an easy tuk tuk ride to the temples.

Less – Cyclo D’Angkor: There’s plenty of budget accommodation in Siem Reap. If you’re on more of a flashpacker budget, check out Cyclo D’Angkor Boutique Hotel . I stayed in Cyclo D’Angkor Siem Reap for an absolute bargain price for a hotel, and was pretty chuffed to discover a boutique style hotel with a small pool and restaurant. Cyclo D’Angkor is only a short tuk tuk ride from the Angkor Wat temples and Siem Reap town.

4. Bali, Indonesia

Why Visit Bali

Bali is a well-trodden tourist path, but for good reason. It’s got everything you need for a chilled and easy beach break, and plenty of activities to keep you entertained beyond the beach. Singapore to Bali is a direct 2 hour 40 minute flight . There’s several daily flights from Singapore to Bali with many airlines, including Jetstar, Singapore Airlines, Scoot, KLM, Air Asia and Garuda Indonesia.

What to do in Bali

My favourite things to do in Bali are to explore the Ubud rice fields, visit a Balinese temple (Uluwatu Temple and Tanah Lot are particularly pretty by the ocean), eat seafood on the beach in Jimbaran Bay, chill and people watch at the trendy beach bars, and live it up in a villa.

Bali’s also an incredible place for foodies and socialising. In Seminyak, some old favs are Motel Mexicola, Potato Head Beach Club, Woo Bar at the W Hotel, Ku De Ta, or any local warung (restaurant) for satay and nasi goreng.

If you’re up for a challenge (and a ridiculously early morning), hike Mt Batur at sunrise. The sunrise views are spectacular, if you’re willing to share them with hundreds of other hikers.

Where to Stay in Bali

Bali may be an island, but it’s a pretty big one, and it takes several hours to drive across the island. Traffic in Bali can also be pretty atrocious and incredibly slow. For a weekend trip to Bali, I prefer to stick to one area within an hour or so from the airport, usually Seminyak for its easy access to the beach, nightlife and shopping. A few of my favs are:

Luxe – Double-Six Seminyak: I loved luxing it up at the Double-Six Luxury Hotel in Seminyak during a solo trip to Bali. The hotel is stunning, the pool is relaxing, the al-a-carte breakfast is drool-worthy, and the beachfront location is beautiful and safe.

Luxe – Komaneka Ubud: On yet another solo trip to Bali I stayed at the honeymoon worthy Komaneka at Tanggayuda . What a treat! I had an epic villa with a private plunge pool. Not that I needed it, as my fav thing about the resort was the infinity pool with mesmerising views of the Ubud jungle.

Less – Dash Boutique Hotel: I enjoyed staying at Dash Boutique Hotel when I was on a solo trip to Bali and trying to stick to a budget. Dash is a bright funky hotel on the main Petitenget strip, slap bang in the middle of excellent restaurants, beach clubs and boutique shops. In fact, Petitenget is my fav area to stay in Seminyak!

5. Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Why Visit Yogyakarta

Visit Yogyakarta Indonesia to soak up the atmosphere at Buddhist and Hindu temples that are a bit more off-the-path than Angkor Wat. When you’re done, enjoy the vibrant city life in Yogyakarta, also known as Jogjakarta. Singapore to Yogyakarta is a direct 2 hour 10 flight .

What to do in Yogyakarta

Most people visit Yogyakarta to see the incredible temples of Borobudur and Prambanan.

Borobudur: Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple. It’s certainly impressive, with multiple layers and wise all-knowing Buddhist faces, and is a favorite sunrise spot. Borobudur is around 1 hour drive from Yogyakarta, which means a very early start if you do want to make sunrise! (Or in my case, not actually seeing sunrise due to the haze.)

Prambanan: Prambanan is a 9th century Hindu temple complex on the outskirts of Yogyakarta. If you have time, visit both Borobudur and Prambanan.

I’m an absolute sucker for a boutique colonial hotel, so it was no surprise that I loved the gorgeous Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta . I was in Yogyakarta as a solo female traveler, and felt very safe at my hotel and walking around the city.

6. Bintan or Batam Islands, Indonesia

Why Visit Bintan and Batam

Bintan and Batam are one of the easiest short trips from SIngapore. Relax, play golf and indulge in a day spa, at a fraction of the cost of Singapore and all without needing a flight – pure convenience! No flights required (woohoo!). Bintan and Batam are an easy 50 minute ferry ride from Singapore, with multiple daily departures. Great for a last minute short trip from Singapore!

What to do in Bintan and Batam

Chillax at the pool or beach, play golf, or unwind with a day spa. Yup, that’s about it on these islands!

I love the spa at Tempat Senang at Batam, which offers Balinese style half-day (3 hour) and full-day (6 hours, plus lunch break) spa sessions. The spa menu includes massages, facials, foot reflexology, body scrubs and mani/pedis.

Where to Stay in Bintan and Batam

Bintan – Mayang Sari: Mayang Sari Beach Resort is on a lovely quiet stretch of beach, with cute little beach bungalows and a chilled restaurant. The resort doesn’t have a restaurant, but you can pop to the hotel next door and use their pool.

Batam – Tempat Senang: My pick for Batam is Tempat Senang Spa Resort. Tempat Senang has an awesome day spa, where you can do an indulgent half day or full day spa for around $150 / $300 per person. The resort also has excellent Indonesian food, a refreshing pool, easy access to a nearby golf club and comfy rooms.

My favourite things to do in Penang are to explore the old town, architecture and street art in George Town, hike in the Penang National Park (I liked the Monkey Beach trail), and relax at the beach in Batu Ferringhi.

8. Ipoh, Malaysia

Why Visit Ipoh

Ipoh is a mini-Penang, packed with street-art and street-food, culture and caves, but with a fraction of the visitor numbers of Penang. Ipoh is a direct 1 hour 15 minute flight from Singapore. Easy!

What to do in Ipoh

Ipoh has a gorgeous Old Town which is partly dilapidated with crumbling buildings overgrown with vines, and partly restored with grand colonial buildings. Explore the Ipoh Heritage Trail to see the best Ipoh architecture and the Ipoh Mural Art Trail to see the best Ipoh street art. Don’t miss pretty Market Lane (photo above) and Concubine Lane.

Once you’re done with the Old Town, grab a taxi to the nearby Ipoh cave temples with impressive rock formations and slightly further afield to the abandoned Kellie’s Castle.

Ipoh is the foodie capital of Malaysia, with a diverse range of street food, local eateries and trendy western style cafes, bars and restaurants. I loved some of the modern eateries in the Old Town block around Jalan Sultan Yusof, Jalan Market and Jalan Panglima.

Less – Ipoh Hotels: If you’re looking for a super funky Ipoh hotel in a central location, check out the M Boutique Hotel . M Boutique is a short walk or Grab ride to both the Old Town and the New Town. I loved my stay at this trendy and comfortable hotel, which was very reasonably priced to boot! I also loved the look of Bedrock Hotel , near the New Town.

Luxe – Pangkor Laut Resort: If you have a longer holiday and are craving a bit of luxury, take a 1.5 hour car ride and short speedboat to dreamy Pangkor Laut Resort . 10. Desaru Coast, Malaysia

Why visit desaru coast.

Desaru Coast is an easy weekend escape when you’re after a family-friendly resort break, but can’t be a*sed with another flight (first world problems, I know). Desaru Coast is around 1.5-2 hours drive (subject to border-crossings, can be significantly more) from Singapore. You can also get a busy or ferry to Desaru.

What to do in Desaru Coast

Desaru Coast is very much a chilled resort holiday. Think beach, pool, spa, cocktails, repeat. I have on good authority that the little ones go nuts for the Adventure Waterpark, and the slightly bigger ones may love the excellent Els Club golf course!

There’s three nice hotels just down the coast from the main town, near the waterpark and golf course – The Westin , Anantara and Hard Rock Hotel . These are all good choices depending on what you’re after. Desaru is very family friendly, so may not be the best spot for a quiet child-free break!

11. Bangkok, Thailand

City lovers rejoice! Bangkok is the ultimate city escape from Singapore, where you can sightsee by day and party by night. Bangkok is a 2 hour 30 minute direct flight from Singapore.

What to do in Bangkok

Check out some of Bangkok’s incredible temples like Wat Phra Chetuphon with its famous (and massive!) reclining Buddha and Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn). Don’t miss the nearby Grand Palace, a sprawling 1782 palace complex with the stunning 14th century Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaeo).

Once you’re all ‘templed out’, why not take a relaxing cruise down the Chao Phraya River or visit the bustling Chatuchak Weekend Market.

Finally, end your days at one of Bangkok’s incredible restaurants like Blue Elephant or rooftop bars like Spectrum Lounge & Bar.

Ahhmm … I’m sure there’s lots of things to do in Phuket … I just don’t know what it is as all I do is chill at the beach / pool and drink cocktails!

Public Service Announcement: The Phuket mainland beaches aren’t quite as pristine as you’d expect. It’s worth taking a day tour around the surrounding islands like Phi Phi. I absolutely hated the boat trip to Phuket’s surrounding islands (but, then again, I’m a complete wuss) but adored the beaches.

I’ve stayed in central Phuket, and it’s not really my jam. Aleenta Phuket Resort & Spa in north Phuket is a slice of luxe paradise, and is perfect for a relaxing weekend away from the hype and chaos of central Phuket. It’s also relatively close to Phuket airport, which makes a difference if you’re just on a weekend trip from Singapore.

Get away from the typical Thai beaches and explore the temples and jungle of northern Thailand. Chiang Mai is a direct 3h 10m flight from Singapore. Hong Kong has to be one of the most vibrant, lively and cultural Asian mega-cities. Visiting Hong Kong is a must do if you live in Singapore! Hong Kong is a direct 4h flight from Singapore.

What to do in Hong Kong

Partake in the national sport of eating! Or the second national sport of shopping! (Much like Singapore really.)

Gorge on dumplings and street food and then got your luxe on at OZONE Bar, one of the highest bars in the world at a dizzying 118 floors up.

Also, take the bargain Star Ferry across the harbor to Kowloon, jump in the tram to Victoria Peak for panoramic views (go late afternoon and see the views by day and night), ride the cable car to Tian Tan Buddha and explore the chaotic city on foot.

Hmmm it’s all pricey … I suggest searching TripAdvisor for a central hotel with a good deal and reasonable reviews. We stayed at Harbour Grand Hong Kong which was a fairly generic but comfortable hotel in a good location with a nice pool. You’ll be out and about most of the time, so location is more important than luxury.

15. Macau, China

Why Visit Macau

Macau may be known for its glitzy casinos, but it’s also a former Portuguese colony with a lively old town. Expect a true East meets West experience, with European food and architecture mixed in with Chinese influences. Macau is a direct 3 hour 45 minute flight from Singapore, or one hour ferry from Hong Kong.

What to do in Macau

Macau is a complete contrast between the old and the new and the East and the West. Make sure you take in both the glitzy Cotai Strip of casinos and the old Macau Heritage Center.

In the Cotai Strip, you’ll find shiny new (and somewhat ostentatious) casinos, resorts, malls, shows, restaurants and clubs. Take the elevator up the half size replica Eiffel Tower at The Parisian Hotel for great nighttime views, and a gondola ride down The Venetian canals for a touch of Venice. Don’t miss The House of Dancing Water Show , which is a spectacular mix of dancing, diving, acrobatics and theatre to rival Cirque du Soleil.

Once you’re exhausted from the fast pace and bright lights, take things down a notch by getting lost in the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Centre of Macau. The Historic Centre has a unique mix of Chinese and Portuguese culture, heritage and architecture. Highlights include Senado Square with its brightly colored Portuguese buildings, the eerie Ruins of St Paul’s church, and Guia Fortress on the hilltop.

If you’re in Macau, it would be remiss not to stay at one of the rather extravagant hotels lining the Cotai Strip. Think OTT lobbies, opulent rooms, massive shopping malls, casinos galore and glitzy shows.

On a girls’ trip we had a few people staying at The Parisian Hotel and a few people staying next door at The Venetian Hotel . Both hotels were top quality, a little gaudy but incredible luxurious, and had a touch of Europe with a replica Eiffel Tower at The Parisian and canals to rival Venice at The Venetian.

Great write up and suggestions! The Taj and Angkor Wat are at the top of my list as well! Just wanted to clarify for the readers though that the Taj Mahal isn’t a temple, it’s a mausoleum. Not trying to throw any shade, just seeing the Taj as a temple and seeing it as a memorial that an emperor dedicated to his wife are two very different experiences.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake, I’ve clarified it. Angkor Wat and The Taj really are both such impressive and special places to visit. I hope to visit both again soon!

Dang it – was hoping to find a quick getaway from Singapore but having visited 90% of that list I am doomed.

Oh no! I’ll keep adding to this list. There’s always Melaka, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, Cameron Highlands, Rawa Island, Tioman Island, Batu Batu, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu (loved Gaya Island!) (all Malaysia), Bangkok, Krabi, Koh Samui (all Thailand), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Ho Chi Minh City or Hue (both Vietnam), Yangon (Myanmar) (although you really should visit for longer!), Vientiane or Luang Prabang (both Laos and two of my favs), Lombok (Indonesia) or some of the fancy islands near Singapore (Nikoi, Telunas, Pangkil, Joyo). Phew, so many options for short trips from Singapore!

Hey thanks for the post! It’s really good:) you should visit Pulau bersah, Mersing in Johor Bahru Malaysia. The water is so crystal clear and it’s a good spot for snorkeling, island hopping and diving. It’s named as the Maldives in Asia and it’s totally not touristy which I loved! The sand is white and blue green waters with fish. It’s practically better than Langkawi. The best part is it’s just 3hrs drive from Singapore. The resort there offers pick up at the jetty in Mersing. That place is a gem so close to Singapore I would say a 100times more beautiful and relaxing than Bintan and Batam. The sunset and sunrise at the jetty was unreal!

CNX is a filthy, poorly kept airport. I have heard that Thailand plans to build another airport in San Kampaeng area, so perhaps they are just letting this one go. But it makes every airline look badly to offer their service in such a poorly organized "dump". Sorry to say this, but that's what it's like. At least the AirAsia flight which I took was on time! Leg room is just too short and food costs and is not good quality. We had 2 attempts to land at Singapore Changing during a thunderstorm. Everything was delayed by 1 hour plus.

Boarding was not accordingly after front seat, bmf then back seat. This delayed for at least 40mins or more. The staff at Jakarta can do better. Is chaos at the entry to board the plane. This tarnished Scoot reputation when everyone was talking about it.

Scoot refused to change my flight even though I had booked a flexible ticket. MyTrip wanted to charge me an extra $271 for a ticket that was only listed as $217. If my travel history were an Olympic tournament, Singapore would get a medal in at least two categories: the first foreign city I have visited in my life and second in the list of countries I have visited most frequently, ten times despite its reputation as the most expensive city in the world.

Yep, expensive. Ask travelers who have set foot on Singapore for adjectives that best describe the city, and “expensive” won’t be absent from any list. Many of the key attractions here can burn a hole in the pocket. But it doesn’t mean that budget travel isn’t possible. There are many ways to reduce expenses if you just know where to go.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING SINGAPORE

Singapore is an island city state composed of the main island, 62 islets, and sprawling reclaimed lands. Its strategic location makes it an important and vibrant trade hub for centuries. In 1819, it became a British colony until World War II, when the Japanese occupied the island. After the war, it was handed back to Britain but was granted more self-governing power. In 1963, it merged with the Federation of Malaya to form Malaysia only to be expelled two years later, which gave birth to an independent Republic of Singapore.

Since then, Singapore has catapulted itself to becoming a developed state. Despite the high costs and small land area, it has become a great place to live. It is one of the safest, most organized, most progressive, and least corrupt countries in the region and the world.

Singapore is also a global transport and tourism hub. It is linked to Malaysia by the Johor–Singapore Causeway. Batam in Indonesia is also just one hour’s ferry ride away. And through Changi Airport, widely regarded as the world’s best, Singapore is connected to almost every major city all over the globe.

Languages: English, Malay, Mandarin Chinese, and Tamil are the four official languages. Malay (Bahasa Malaysia) is the national language, but English is the lingua franca. Most Singaporeans can speak and understand English and another official language.
Currency: Singapore dollar (SGD, SG$). SGD 1 is roughly USD 0.74, EUR 0.66, PHP 38 (as of May 2019).
Modes of payment: Although many establishments accept credit cards, cash is still highly recommended.

WHERE TO STAY IN SINGAPORE

Accommodations in Singapore are expensive by Southeast Asian standards, or by any standard for that matter. Budget travelers have three options: backpacker hostels, BnB, and budget hotels. Because space is scarce in Singapore, don’t expect rooms of generous proportions. Rooms are usually just beds with little space around it, and bathrooms are compact. Capsule hotels are also starting to be popular.

Backpackers hostels are concentrated in Chinatown, Little India, Clark Quay, Bugis, and Geylang areas. Most of them offer dorm beds and double rooms. Budget hotels are mostly in Geylang, Little India, and Balestier.

I have personally experienced staying in multiple areas in Singapore: Chinatown, Little India, Geylang, Tiong Bahru, etc. While some are more glamorous than others, all of them felt safe. My Singaporean friends told me that Geylang is the red light district. But I have stayed there too, and it was okay. Our taxi driver, however, that while it is generally safe, female travelers should probably choose another area.

When picking a place to stay, look at its location in the map. Normally, if it’s close to an MRT Station, you should be fine. Most of the attractions in Singapore can be reached via the MRT. But I personally prefer staying in Chinatown because of easy access to the MRT and cheap hawker places.

HOW TO GET TO SINGAPORE

Singapore’s Changi Airport is one of the most well-connected and widely regarded as the best airport in the world. If you live in a major city in Asia or Europe or North America, chances are, there are direct flights to Singapore available.

Manila to Singapore

The lowest year-round fares are offered by Scoot, JetStar, and Cebu Pacific. But Philippine Airlines also have competitive rates when they have a promo. Travel time: 3 hours 40 minutes.

If you’re a Philippine passport holder, you don’t need a visa. All you need is a valid passport (with 6 months left before expiration). Just show up at the airport and fly.

Kuala Lumpur to Singapore by Plane

Plane tickets from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore are incredibly cheap, with base fares not exceeding USD20. Travel time: around 1 hour 15 minutes.

Kuala Lumpur or Malacca to Singapore by Bus

You can also reach Singapore from KL or Malacca (Melaka) by bus. Travel time from KL is 5-7 hours, depending on traffic. From Malacca, only 4-5 hours. You will be crossing the border overland, but it’s quite easy albeit confusing in the beginning. Just make sure of the following:

Remember your bus details (how it looks, number, etc.) because you will have to get off and hop back on at the border.
Bring your bags with you when you cross the border.
Don’t forget your passport and Malaysia Departure Card.

Singapore River Walk

This is my fave thing to do in Singapore: walk along the river. You can walk from Raffles Place to the Merlion Park to Esplanade to the Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay. I’ve prepared a more detailed post including walking directions and photos here: DIY Singapore River Walk .

If walking long distances isn’t really your thing, you can join a cruise instead. This 40-minute cruise will let you see the following landmarks while comfortably seated on a boat:

The whole journey takes 40 minutes and you can alight at any of the stops. But remember, you would need another ticket after you board again.

Chinatown Tour

Singapore’s Chinatown boasts multi-religious buildings and structures. Aside from a Chinese temple, the street is also home to a mosque, a Methodist Church and an Indian shrine. Confused? Welcome to the club. But that’s what makes this place more endearing. It tells you so much about how Singapore values diversity in culture and religion.

As I always say, this can change based on your spending habits. I’m only sharing so you have a ballpark figure of how much to prepare here although I strongly recommend that you pad this with much allowance to be on the safe side.

OTHER TIPS FOR THE POOR TRAVELER

Where to Eat . If you’re on a budget, ditch the restaurants for hawkers. Hawkers will give you a wide array of local options at a much lower price. They abound all around Singapore, but they were not created equal. One of the reasons we recommend Chinatown as a good base is because it is home to one of the best hawker places in SG — Maxwell Food Center . Staying here gives you easy access to cheap but good food every day.
Walk when you can. One thing I like most was that Singapore is a very “walkable” city. Walkable because it’s actually a fun and rewarding experience to walk around many key areas in the city. The best part, it’s free!
Get an EZ Link Card if you’re taking the MRT a lot. This will allow you to breeze through the station entrances when taking the train. The train system is pretty expansive so you might want to take advantage of it. It can be a bit tiring, though, especially at interchange connections, when you’re walking from one line to another.
GST Refund . Tourists in Singapore can claim refund on GST (Goods and Services Tax) paid for items purchased from establishments that are participating in the Tourist Refund Scheme. More info here .

There really isn’t a clear “best” time to visit Singapore. Each month has its distinct pros and cons, so it all depends on your travel habits. But in general, Singapore is a year-round destination.

Weather isn’t that much of a factor. Singapore is hot and humid all year. It also gets over 160 days of rain, spread almost uniformly throughout the year. However, November-January is the wettest period, and May-September the driest.

Events and public holidays can significantly affect your experience and expenses. But if your budget isn’t that big (say USD 500), I don’t think the difference between here and the ones at the airport matters. You might lose whatever you think you could save in transportation just to get to a good money changer.

They don’t usually do that. They sometimes ask how much money you have with you. I usually just say how much and then say I have a credit card too.

Do you have any idea how much? Im afraid that I might get off load by the Immigration Officer. My friends and I will only be staying in SG for 2-3 days as we will be on a cruise and SG is where the ship will embark.

Hi! thanks for this! I’m traveling to SG this year, my second travel for the year but my third time abroad. During my second out of the country, I was asked by the IO if it’s my first time. I said no it’s my second time, but I just renewed my passport at that time so the stamps during my first travel are in my old passport. I was asked if I brought my old one with me but I don’t have it so she just let it pass.

Yep, bring the old one with you too.

As Pinoy travelers, we are often subjected to stricter inspection, especially by our own Immigration. It’s best to just bring both to prove your travel history.

I usually stay either at G4 Station in Little India or Rucksack Inn at Temple Street, Chinatown. I like Rucksack Inn a little bit more because of excellent location. However, they closed down the Chinatown branch. What’s left now is the Lavender Branch, but I haven’t tried it.

I will be traveling to SG in a couple of weeks and I’m not sure which of the two methods would cost me less in purchases.

Hi Lori, I’m not that familiar with BPI cards, so I don’t know. You’re referring to an ATM/debit card, right? Considering to withdraw cash from an ATM?

In general, when traveling abroad, I find that withdrawing from an ATM is the better and safer way of getting cash. It’s also more convenient because there are usually more ATMs than money changers. So I’m always inclined to use the ATM. (Choose the WITHOUT Conversion option, if you do this.)

In Singapore, though, it’s harder to decide because money changers offer competitive rates. But if you’re withdrawing not that big an amount, the difference is usually too little to matter. You might lose whatever you think you could save in transportation just to get to a good money changer.

Hi jennie, there are lots of hostels in SG that can give you a bed for less than SGD40 per night (120 for 3 nights). I have stayed in G4 Station Hostel, Rucksack Inn, etc.

Hi Janine, whatever currency you currently carry (PHP or USD), convert directly to SGD. If you have more pesos, you can convert directly from PHP to SGD. Avoid converting PHP to USD then to SGD. You’ll lose more in double conversion. :)

By the way, ang pagkakaalam ko po, kahit hindi abot sa minimum, pwede pa rin kayong ma-issuehan ng ITR if nagbabayad ng tax ung employer nyo for you. Lalabas lang dun na zero ung tax pero andun pa rin ung other details. Ask mo employer nyo for a copy of last year’s ITR.

Japan airlines is excellent. I had a great flight with them, and they are the consummate professionals. I booked my flight through Kayak and they sent it on to Underpricer. That felt really scammy. My Oneworld number would not attach to the reservation and I could not choose a seat. I called Japan Airlines and got one but it was in the back. Later I drove to the airport and worked with the excellent agents there to find a better one. Later that day, I got a phone call from Underpricer trying to upsell me the option of choosing a seat. It felt like a Spirit Airlines level crappy move. The flight itself was exactly as nice as you would expect from JAL. The meal was good and the flight crew was awesome.

Liked the food. Needs improvement: 1) the flat bed was very hard and the set up was not at all passenger friendly 2) the announcement were impossible to understand even in English. 3) the flight information on the monitor was terrible it showed a airplane with no information like altitude, airspeed, heading. You could not zoom in or out to orient the aircraft to where you were in the flight. 4) movies were old and very limited as was the music selection.

Good and movies are so old. Needs to have more up-to-date movies.

It was one of the best experiences. The staff were amazing. JAL is my second favorite Asian Carrier I have flown on. Korean Air was my first. Thank you JAL for bringing me home safely and for such an amazing staff and service.

JAL is quite nice in business class. Comfortable, spacious seats. Their entertainment, especially their film selection, isn’t that great though as their are not many new releases like some airlines offer their first and business class customers. . Food is excellent and the option to order on demand is always quite nice, which JAL offers. Flight attendants were very friendly and kind. Overall very good experience with JAL.

It was an outstanding flight and service. The only thing is the seat cushion for economy could be a little more comfortable. More cushion.

I didn’t get to make my flight due to some serious inconvenience ( got in a car crash o the way to the airport AND phone got stolen at the airport). I tried to check in online 24 hours in advance but they said it wouldn’t work online I had to do it in person. I got to the airport about 50 minutes before with my TSA pre, and they said they have up our seats on the flight already. Which was horrible. My sister and I missed spreading my grandfathers ashes in India with my family and was not able to celebrate his life. I spent a lot of my money on this and there nobody seems to be able to do anything. Just an all around horrible situation. I don’t think I will be using kayak and recommending to anyone if it is going to be like this.

It seems paying premium economy does not make difference with economy. No priority boarding, not worthy paying extra$$$ for premium economy.

They are great with every aspect of customer service. Helped my elderly father and aided him with using the restroom.

Transfer within the same terminal and lots of facilities at the airport.

Due to the delay of my first flight, my connecting flight with JetBlue was canceled by Singapore Airlines, but the JetBlue crew was very accommodating and rebooked a seat for me. The crew was very nice and had good attitude.

Positive: Entertainment via phone on the short was great and my first time. Good food and wine and head phones for free. Negative: Seat hardly reclined on the long flight. Breakfast was an egg with a bun. No egg choices and rather have something sweet like bun/jam and Youghurt.

Awful. I got stuck next to a person carrying a dog and behind someone with a dog. People need to board these dogs downstairs. The cabin is crowded enough with your pets

The flight was canceled. Got rebooked to Chicago and when we arrived our luggage where to there. They were going to our original destination the day after. They would not deliver them to our house. We had to go pick them up.

Your app is impossible to use. I couldn't load it. Then i couldn't open it. When i finally got both those things done -with much help -then i couldn't open the app to install a credit card. The upshot was 4 flights without access to food or drink. When i first tried to download united app some company called starlier opened instead and i would up signing up for some 49 dollar a month music service which i still have not been able to cancel.

the plane was old. the wifi didn’t work. the entertainment was boring and dated. the charging ports were impossible to find. i was mostly ignored by flight attendants that had no problem speaking to the man beside me. i got two drinks the entire time i was on the plane.

Delayed a day due to snow storm. Was upgraded. That kind of made up for significant delays from FLL to COS with no compensation or acknowledgement.

It was delayed several hours which delayed our connection in Denver. Not happy.

Quit making seats narrower and narrower. The guy beside me spilled over in to my seat.

Generally good but we were delayed almost two hours from the original time of purchase. The pilot claimed an internal issue then an external equipment issue that needed to be adddressed. He made up a lot of the time.

Re-checking our bags, the workers were not able to help us with boarding passes for the flight, told us to wait, then ignored us while they helped many other passengers. Until I got rude, they would have left us standing there, and even then they were very curt and dismissive in telling us where to get boarding passes printed. We made it to the gate just as they were starting to board passengers. It was just rude customer service.

The flight was excellent, provided that we had inclement weather. We departed earlier than scheduled and arrived early. There was a little turbulence, but nothing to be worried about.

Our flight was great we left Kona earlier and got into LAX almost an 1hour earlier as well. LAX AA is in repair so to get out and found our bus to get pick up was a bit confusing.

Delayed flight, few announcements with information, no comps, cluster f boarding because zones weren’t spread out and announced loud and repeatedly, staff did their job -nothing more nothing less, annoying kids were speaking and kicking the heck out of the back of my seat and parents weren’t willing to parent… so another typical day of air travel in the US.,

The flight crew was really wonderful, incredibly helpful as well as patient. I was able to watch entertainment on my phone but didn't have access to my headphones and I didn't want to bother the flight attendants. The food wasn't an issue for me because I am a vegan and brought my own food on board. The flight left on time and arrived ahead of schedule. It was overall a good flight.

I don’t think the flight attendants are happy. They do not seem to be friendly or welcoming.

While prices in Singapore are akin to most other major international cities, most travelers feel the pinch when doing a Southeast Asian jaunt where neighboring countries are generally much cheaper to visit in comparison.

But don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to explore Singapore without breaking the bank. Here are our tips for budget-conscious travelers looking to stretch their Singapore dollars.

The best way to save on drinks is to take advantage of supermarkets or hawker center drink stalls that serve bottled beer – do so before 10:30pm as there is a curfew on alcohol sales in Singapore. Alternatively, start drinking earlier and look for happy hour deals around the nightlife districts to save some dollars.

Opt for public transport

Singapore’s public transport network is well-developed and efficient, offering a good, affordable way to explore the city. Fares are calculated based on distance traveled and while you can easily pay with your credit card, opt for a day pass if you expect to do a lot of commuting.

If you want to avoid expensive taxi rides, make a note of cheap or free shuttle options around major tourist attractions to cut down on transport costs. For example, you can walk for free or take the public bus to Sentosa versus paying for a scenic but more expensive cable car ride, and the Mandai Wildlife Reserve also has cheap shuttle connections to the MRT.

Consider where to stay

Most of Singapore’s famous sights are clustered in the south/central area, so while hotel rates there tend to be higher, the convenience of being able to walk to attractions may be more worthwhile than the cost and time spent commuting to a cheaper hotel outside the city center.

Alternatively, staying close to an MRT station can help cut transport costs – the subway lines connect to most major attractions, run till midnight and also connect to Changi Airport, so budget travelers with time to spare can consider skipping the taxi queues.

Pick supermarkets over convenience stores

If you need to stock up on daily necessities, hunt down a supermarket chain store like Fairprice, Cold Storage, Giant or Sheng Siong. There are plenty of smaller convenience stores around like 7-11 and Cheers, but the food and drink sold there tend to be significantly more expensive than the supermarket options.

Tip: instead of a kitschy fridge magnet souvenir, pick up pre-packaged sauces, seasonings and foods to bring the local tastes of Singapore home after your trip.

Save money by drinking tap water

There’s no need to buy bottled water in Singapore as the tap water is perfectly safe to drink. Carry around a reusable bottle – most attractions have a water cooler to refill bottles. In restaurants and cafes, ask for tap water instead of still or sparkling water as it's usually free, but note that some eateries may still charge for water (even if it came from the tap).

Plan ahead to save money

If you know exactly what you want to see in Singapore, you could save a little by purchasing bundled tickets beforehand. Major tourist attractions usually offer family bundles as well for those traveling in groups or with children.

There are three main types of travel insurance policy for Singapore. These are:

Single trip: for a one-off trip in the space of 12 months to Singapore
Annual multi-trip : for more than one trip in the space of 12 months to Singapore or various destinations. This type of cover can work out more cost-effective than buying multiple single trip policies but not always so it’s best to compare both types of cover.
Long-stay/backpacker : for an extended stay in Singapore, of typically 60 or 90 days, or 12 or 18 months. Cover for 24 months may be available, from certain providers.

When applying for travel insurance online, you’ll first be asked to enter your holiday destination. Depending on the insurer, you’ll need to click on Singapore, Asia or Worldwide travel excluding the US and nearby destinations such as Mexico, the Caribbean, Canada and Greenland. The latter option excludes a part of the world where medical costs are the highest, which in turn, bumps up the cost of cover. If you’re also planning to travel to the US, for example, there are separate worldwide policies that include it as a destination.

Insurers usually offer at least two or more types of travel insurance policy from basic or comprehensive cover and anything in between. Comprehensive policies offer the highest cover levels and widest range of benefits.

A key component of all travel insurance policies is emergency medical cover. You’ll find a comprehensive policy for Singapore will often offer an unlimited amount.

The standard of medical facilities and care in Singapore is similar to, or higher than in Australia, and the cost often much higher, so medical cover can prove a vital resource should you fall ill, or get injured, while away.

There are a number of ways you can ensure your policy fits your needs. Many insurers offer optional add-ons that you can purchase if you need specialised cover. These include insurance for gadgets (such as a smartphone or laptop), a cruise and playing golf.

If you’re thinking of participating in more high-octane activities, check your policy’s PDS. Many cover around 100 or so sports automatically. Cover for what an insurer classes as high-risk activities, such as skydiving, bungee jumping, outdoor rock climbing, and activities requiring a set of wheels, such as quad biking, may require purchasing an additional ‘sports pack’ for your policy.

While reading through a policy’s PDS, it’s crucial to also take note of any limitations of cover. These can differ between policies, but generally you can expect most insures to refuse claims relating to a pre-existing condition. This is a medical condition you had before taking out the policy. The insurer may not cover such conditions, or may refuse your claim if you did not declare your condition on applying for the policy.

An insurer is also unlikely to accept claims for an injury caused by taking part in a sport or activity where you did not wear the appropriate safety gear, such as a helmet, knee pads or a harness. Claims resulting from disorderly behaviour or being under the influence of drink or drugs will also likely be rejected.

It’s best to regularly check government advice for your destination, which it publishes on its Smartraveller website. This includes warnings about natural disasters, terrorism threats and pandemics. Visiting Singapore, or a part of the country, if the government puts it on its “do not travel” list, could invalidate your policy.

We used the profile of a family of four, aged 42, 40, 14 and 12, spending 13 to 26 May in the country, and assumed they have no pre-existing conditions, (although these providers do offer cover for pre-existing conditions should you need it).

We found basic cover ranged from around $106 to $202, while comprehensive cover started at around $241, with the most expensive policy costing just under $304.

Before choosing a policy, it’s important to shop around. An easy way to do this is to run quotes on the websites of various insurers and compare factors such as the type of cover a policy includes and cover levels against price.
