The Municipal Government and the Business Sector are teaming up to help Puerto Galera's tourism industry bounce back from the pandemic with the slogan "Tara sa Galera, Amazing ang Saya." The campaign rests on four pillars, including reviving summer festivities and beautifying White Beach, reinforcing the tourism value of the municipality's international accolades, rebranding Sabang as the dive and culinary destination of MIMAROPA and Reliving the Past, Embracing the Future at the Muelle Cultural Heritage Park. The initiatives aim to attract both local and foreign tourists, showcasing Puerto Galera's natural beauty, cultural heritage, and diverse offerings.

Where to Stay in Puerto Galera

Puerto Galera White Beach

White Beach is the most popular place to stay in Puerto Galera, followed by Sabang. For those who like more privacy and quiet, there are other beach coves and mountainside locations that offer a view of the surrounding ocean and mountains.

White Beach is the main tourist hub in Puerto Galera. It’s home to different beachfront hotels and resorts, tours and watersports activities, cafes and restaurants, and shops. It is also the center of nightlife in Puerto Galera.

White Beach is particularly popular among families. It is convenient and everything is within arm’s reach.

Recommended stays in White Beach:

  • Maria Roos Hotel
  • The Mang-Yan Grand Hotel by Cocotel

Sabang is the next popular place to stay in Puerto Galera. It’s close to a number of dive spots, so it’s the go-to of divers and freedivers. Most foreign tourists prefer to stay in Sabang, while local tourists at the White Beach.

Recommended stays in Sabang:

  • Edgewater Dive and Resort Spa
  • Lalaguna Villas

There are other beach locations you can stay at in Puerto Galera. Aninuan Beach is an uncrowded beach next to White Beach, ideal for those who prefer a quiet stay. Talipanan Beach is also a less-visited location with glimmering coves for those who like to bask in the sun without the crowd.

Things to do in Puerto Galera

Whether you simply want to chill or looking for an adventure, there are different activities you can do in Puerto Galera.

You’re in Puerto Galera to enjoy the beach! White Beach is of course the most famous beach cove here. Aside from swimming, you can also engage in various watersports including jetski, kayak, banana boat, and more.

There are also lesser-known beaches in Puerto Galera that you can visit, including Aninuan Beach, Talipanan Beach, and Palangan Beach.

Puerto Galera island hopping tour

Visit the best attractions in Puerto Galera including its beach coves and three main snorkeling sites (San Antonio Island Underwater Cave, Giant Clams, and Coral Garden).

We loved the island hopping tours in Puerto Galera since they are fun and affordable, even for couples. There are large boats that you can rent as a group. Or you can head to the sandbar where there are small outrigger boats that can take you directly to the snorkeling sites.

Diving in Puerto Galera

Puerto Galera is a famous diving destination. It features over 40 dive sites, the best of which can be found in Sabang. Some of the notable ones include the Alma Jane Wreck (a 30-meter long cargo ship that serves as an artificial reef), The Canyons (famous for its challenging strong currents), Gian Clams Site, Kilima Steps, and Shark Cave.

For those who like snorkeling or freediving, there are easily accessible spots such as the Giant Clams and Coral Garden (which are stops in island hopping tours), as well as the waters in Long Beach, Coco Beach, and Monkey Beach.

Learn about the people in Puerto Galera by visiting the Irawan Mangyan Village — an indigenous community located in Talipanan. The Mangyans is one of the eight indigenous tribes in this province. In early times, they were living in coastal areas and trading with Chinese merchants as early as 1250 AD.

Visiting this village will let you immerse yourself in this culture and even support them by buying woven products made using nito (black fern), which is considered a form of traditional art.

Step into the jungle and visit the waterfalls in Puerto Galera, including Aninuan Falls, Talipanan Falls, Tukuran Falls, and Tamaraw Falls.

You can get to these waterfalls by riding a motorcycle or chartering a tricycle. There are also land tour packages that include these sites.

Puerto Galera offers more than beaches. For those who love the outdoors, you can hike Mount Malasimbo. It will take you about 5 hours from jump-off to the summit, passing by the Mangyan Village and Talipanan Falls along the way.

For advanced hikers, you can also head to Mount Halcon, the highest mountain in the island of Mindoro. This will take a 2-days trip to complete.

Both hikes require a guide, so you may need to coordinate your hike in advance.

Malasimbo Festival in Puerto Galera

Enjoy the tropical paradise of Puerto Galera with good food, art, and music by attending the Malasimbo Festival . It is held every summer and features local and international music performers and artists.

You can find different restaurants along White Beach offering Filipino and other cuisines.

If you’re in a budget, there are regular eateries offering silog and rice meals for P100 or less. These are located along the main roads and near the local market.

Here’s a guide to the Best Restaurants in Puerto Galera .

Here’s a sample 3-days itinerary to Puerto Galera.

Here are the current expenses for a trip to Puerto Galera ( Updated as of 2022 ):

  • Best time to visit : Puerto Galera enjoys warm weather all-year-round. That saying, the best time to go here is during the dry season (December to May). High peak season runs from April to May so expect a surge in prices in these months, and off-peak season is from June to November.
  • ATMs : There are limited ATMs in Puerto Galera, which are located in Poblacion and Sabang. As such, it’s best to bring enough cash for your stay. Most hotels and resorts accept credit card, but smaller establishments are on a cash basis.
  • Puerto Galera is one of the places where it’s recommended to book a tour package (instead of DIY) especially if you’re in a group because of the ease and discounts.

Puerto Galera literally means “Port of Galleons” in Spanish. It served as a trading port during the Spanish period and temporary shelter for ships going the Manila-Acapulco route.

In 1973, it was declared by UNESCO as a Man and Biosphere Reserve and it is named by conservationists as the “center of center” of marine biodiversity owing to its location at the heart of the Coral Triangle.

Currently, it’s a popular summer destination among locals, as well as a diving destination for beginner and/or professional divers.

Kami bang mga hindi bakunado ang sanhi ng pagkalat ng Covid at hindi kami puedeng magtravel? Papano ninyo maipapaliwanag kung sino pa ang mga bakunado sila pa yung paulit-ulit na nagkakasakit? Ako, 65 years old, ni isang beses, hindi ako nagkasakit since pumutok ang Covid!

Please don't propagate your propaganda and fake information here. If you are a healthcare or medical expert, then feel free to express your opinion. :(

ABOUT SEE & DO EAT & DRINK STAY BUDGET ADVICE

Travel Insurance

Puerto Galera is one of the most popular tourist destinations in this part of the country and is a favorite quick getaway destination of tourists coming from Metro Manila .  Not only is it easily accessible from the country’s capital but also has white sand beaches and at least four waterfalls as well as diving and snorkeling sites teeming with marine life.  After all, it lies at the southwestern edge of the Isla Verde Passage, the passage known for its extremely rich marine biodiversity and the richest area in the entire Coral Triangle.

Aside from natural resources, Puerto Galera has active nightlife and offers extreme sports to indulge that adventurous spirit of yours.  While it may not be as popular as Boracay , El Nido , or Coron , Puerto Galera possesses its own charm that attracts thousands of tourists every year.

Puerto Galera Location Map

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Puerto Galera summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Puerto Galera in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

Suggested Budget

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  Skyscanner ,  momondo ,  Kayak ,  kiwi.com .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to Puerto Galera.  Learn what you need to know BEFORE you go!

Tips & Hacks

The following are our Top 10 Tips when visiting this destination in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found in Puerto Galera. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Puerto Galera, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel or resort front desk as they are more likely to give you reliable information than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Recommended Travel Apps

Apps for smartphones and tablets can be useful both before you leave and while you’re traveling.  Most are available for iPhones and Android phones.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling in Puerto Galera or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

PUERTO GALERA TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

PUERTO GALERA TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

If one would condense my growth as a beach chaser into the life span of a butterfly, Puerto Galera would be somewhere in the caterpillar stage. Back when I was not yet capable of flying, when Boracay, Palawan and the Maldives filled my flights of fancy, I had my eyes on places that was a little bit more realistic. First, I wanted to just hit the beach, a nearby beach, any beach. Then, I wanted to go farther, ride a boat, and set foot in an island. I always had a destination in mind — Puerto Galera.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING PUERTO GALERA

Even before the colonial era, Puerto Galera has always been a busy port area because it is a good natural shelter for ships and boats. In 1570, the Spaniards arrived in Batangas and later crossed the Verde Island Passage to this coastal settlement. They named it Puerto Galera or Port of Galleons.

puerto galera tourist app for iphone

Today, Puerto Galera is a first class municipality in Oriental Mindoro, about 130 km south of Manila. Although occupying the northernmost tip of another island (Mindoro Island), it can be easily reached from Luzon. This accessibility from the capital and CALABARZON, the country’s most populous region, made it one of the most popular beach destination for decades.

Puerto Galera faces the Verde Island Passage, which is described by a 2007 Smithsonian Institute study as the “center of the center” of the world’s marine biodiversity citing the high concentration of marine species. In 1973, it was declared a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve.

Here are more useful bits about Puerto Galera.

  • Location: Oriental Mindoro, Philippines.
  • Languages: Iraya and Tagalog. But most residents, especially tourism workers, can communicate in English too.
  • Currency: Philippine peso (PHP, ₱). PHP100 is around USD 1.90, EUR 1.69, SGD 2.57 (as of May 2019).
  • Modes of payment: CASH, primarily. Some establishments accept credit cards, but bring cash to be safe.

WHERE TO STAY IN PUERTO GALERA

Puerto Galera’s jagged coastline is hemmed by over a dozen fair-sand-filled coves. Of all these beaches, these three are the most ideal places to stay for tourists:

puerto galera tourist app for iphone

  • White Beach. Puerto Galera’s most popular beach. This is Galera’s answer to Boracay’s White Beach. (And yep, they bear the same name.) This is where most of the tourism action happens. You’ll find a wide array of lodging and dining options here. Nightlife is also here.
  • Aninuan Beach. Located just next to White Beach but this is much more tamed and quiet. This is a good place to stay if you’re after a more relaxing stay but want easy access to White Beach.
  • Sabang Beach. A little bit detached from the first two coves, but it also harbors lots of accommodations. This is a great base for divers because of the number of dive resorts.

HOW TO GET TO PUERTO GALERA

The cheapest and most usual way to reach Puerto Galera from Manila is via Batangas. From Batangas Pier, you will need to catch a ferry to either of the two ports in Puerto Galera. Balatero Port is closer to White Beach and Aninuan Beach, while Muelle Port is closer to Sabang.

  • Head to a JAM Liner bus terminal. There’s one in Cubao and another in LRT Buendia area.
  • Catch a bus bound for Batangas Pier. Some buses pass through and make several stops in Sto. Tomas and Tanauan. If you want a quick journey, board a bus with the CALABARZON sign. This means that the bus will be taking the STAR Tollway, which bypasses most towns and cities between SLEX and Batangas City. Travel time is 2-3 hours. Fare is P197 if you’re coming from Buendia or P207 from Cubao. See bus schedule in the next section below.
  • Get off at Batangas Pier. You can also tell the conductor that you plan to go to Puerto Galera so he knows where to drop you off.
  • Upon arrival at Batangas Pier, head straight to the ticket counters. You may be approached by touts saying that there are no public ferries to Puerto Galera that day. DON’T BELIEVE THEM. They’re just trying to get you to charter an expensive private boat. Walk straight to the ticketing counters.
  • Purchase tickets to Puerto Galera. You may choose a roro or a fastcraft. You can find the schedule as of April 2019 here . Fare: P300.
  • Pay the Batangas Pier terminal fee. P30 per person.
  • Board your booked ferry. Travel time: 55-100 minutes, depending on the type of vessel.
  • At Balatero or Muelle Port, pay the environmental fee. P50 per person. Balatero Pier also collects an additional P20 terminal fee.
  • Ride a tricycle to your resort. If your resort is within short distance, fare is P200 per trip or P50 per person (if you’re a group).

MANILA TO BATANGAS BUS SCHEDULE

Here’s the schedule of Jam Liner buses as of May 2019.

BATANGAS PIER TO PUERTO GALERA SCHEDULE

You can board a roro, a semi-fastcraft, or a fastcraft to Muelle Port or Balatero Port.

There used to be outrigger boats that carry passengers straight to White Beach or Sabang Beach. But during our last trip to Puerto Galera, we didn’t see any outrigger boats to Puerto Galera. The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) had plans of phasing out wooden-hulled boats last year, but I’m not sure if they have implemented this already.

For the schedule of authorized ferries, you may refer to this: BATANGAS-PUERTO GALERA TIMETABLE .

HOW TO GET AROUND PUERTO GALERA

By tricycle.

The jeepney is the cheapest mode of transportation in Puerto Galera. However, as in any other place in the country, jeepneys follow a fixed route and tentative schedules. If you want better control of your time, the tricycle is better.

For short distances, most tricycle drivers charge P150-200 per ride (good for 3 pax). If you’re a group, that’s fine, but it’s a pain on the pockets if you’re traveling solo. A friend said that this is the tourist rate and that it is much lower for locals. I don’t know what the local rate is. However, for budgeting purposes, you can assume that it’s P200 per trip so you won’t go under.

You can also charter a tricycle to take you on a tour and see inland attractions like Tamaraw Falls, Virgin Beach, Mangyan Village, Infinity Farm and others for P800 (good for 3 pax).

By Motorcycle

If you have a driver’s license and you know how to drive a motorcycle, you can rent one and explore the town freely on your own. Rates vary depending on the type of motorcycle and the shop, but the standard rate is P400 per day.

If you choose to travel on two wheels, take extra care. Always wear a helmet even if many of the locals you see don’t.

puerto galera tourist app for iphone

To get to some islands and other coves, chartering a boat is the way to go. Here are the boat rates for trips from Muelle Port as of May 2019. A boat can usually accommodate up to 6 pax.

  • Sandbar: P200 one-way, P400 round trip
  • Buri Beach: P200 one-way, P400 round trip
  • San Antonio: P230 one-way, P460 round trip
  • Fridays: P250 one-way, P500 round trip
  • Coco Beach: P250 one-way, P500 round trip
  • Big La Laguna: P300 one-way, P600 round trip
  • Small La Laguna: P350 one-way, P700 round trip
  • Coral Garden: P400 one-way, P800 round trip
  • Sabang Beach: P400 one-way, P800 round trip
  • Long Beach: P500 one-way, P1000 round trip
  • Haligi Beach: P500 one-way, P1000 round trip
  • Bayanan Beach: P500 one-way, P1000 round trip
  • Tamaraw Beach: P700 one-way, P1400 round trip
  • White Beach: P1000 one-way, P2000 round trip
  • Talipanan Beach: P1200 one-way, P2400 round trip

You can also ask the boatman to tour you around. You may choose three destinations and they will show you around for around P2000.

NIGHT RATES: Night rates are double the prices listed above.

THINGS TO DO IN PUERTO GALERA

Island hopping tour.

puerto galera tourist app for iphone

Most island hopping tours will take you to the following attractions:

  • Haligi Beach
  • Bayanan Beach
  • Sandbar (sometimes replaced by Maniknik Beach)
  • Coral Garden (snorkeling site)

You can also replace a site with another. Check out the list of beaches in the previous section above (HOW TO GET AROUND: BY BOAT) and pick 3 from that list.

The boat tour costs P1800-P2000 per boat , good for 6-8 passengers. An additional P200 fee is collected per person for the smaller paddle boat that will take you to the snorkeling site.

If you want to make the most of your trip, you may visit the following sites:

  • San Antonio Island’s underwater cave
  • Giant clams site
  • Coral garden

Prepare to pay an extra P600 per person to see all three additional attractions.

puerto galera tourist app for iphone

Another way to explore Puerto Galera is by joining a tricycle tour, which will take you to some natural attractions that are easily accessible by land. A tricycle tour usually makes a stop at the following:

  • Tamaraw Falls
  • Virgin Beach
  • Mangyan Village

You will also be stopping at some lookout spots along the way.

The tour costs P800 per tricycle, maximum of 3 passengers. The price excludes entrance fees and other fees per site including the following:

  • Tamaraw Falls swimming area fee: P30 per person
  • Umbrella kiosk rental fee: P140
  • Barbeque grill rental fee: P50
  • Table rental fee: P30
  • Tamaraw Falls table rental and cooking fee: P150 per table
  • Virgin Beach entrance fee: P30 per person

If tricycle is not your preferred mode of transportation, you may also charter a multi-cab or jeepney for P2000+ per vehicle. This will allow you to see other attractions including:

  • Lantuyan Water Curtain
  • Infinity Farm
  • Turukan Falls
  • Hanging Bridge

Additional fees may apply.

Diving Courses

puerto galera tourist app for iphone

Puerto Galera’s coast is lapped by the waves of the Verde Island Passage, which is described by a 2007 Smithsonian Institute study as the “center of the center” of the world’s marine biodiversity citing the high concentration of marine species.

Home to over 40 established dive sites, it is one of the top diving destinations in the country. If you haven’t tried scuba diving before, Puerto Galera is also an ideal place to discover your love for the deep. There’s a lot of dive shops and resorts here and rates vary. But Fun Dives start at P1500 per dive. You can also find PADI introductory courses for around P3500 (1-2 hours, 1 dive).

White Beach and Nightlife

puerto galera tourist app for iphone

White Beach is Puerto Galera’s answer to Boracay. It is the most popular stretch of sand in the area and the most commercialized. You’ll find plenty of activities to enjoy here even at night. On weekends and holidays, there’s no running short of bars, booze, live bands, and fire dancers.

Water Sports

If you want an adrenaline rush, try some of these water rides. Best enjoyed as part of a group. Here are the rates:

  • Unicorn: P2,500, good for 10 pax
  • King Cobra: P2,500, good for 10 pax
  • Flying Saucer: P2,000, good for 6 pax
  • Fly Fish: P1,500, goof for 3 pax
  • Jetski: P2,000 per 15 minutes

Want a better way to watch your expenses when exploring Puerto Galera? Get the LISTA app! It’s a mobile app that will help you track your spending so you know when you’re about to go over budget! It was originally meant for small businesses, but one can use it for personal use, too! It’s especially helpful for travelers when watching their expenses on the road.

All you need to do is enter how much budget you have for the trip and type the amount each time you spend on something. It will then remind you how much budget you still have left. Think of it as your financially responsible travel buddy! It works offline so no internet connection needed.

Here is the new ferry schedule. https://i.imgur.com/KAF0EUl.jpg Buy a round trip ferry ticket in Batangas to avoid a fully booked ferry on your return trip to Batangas. Returning on a Sunday without reserving a ticket can leave you stranded with no options from Muelle or Balatero. You will have to go to Calapan to return to Batangas.

PUERTO GALERA TRAVEL GUIDE (Budget + Itinerary)

by thepinay solobackpacker | Nov 23, 2018 | Featured , Mindoro Oriental , Puerto Galera , Travel Guide | 20 comments

PUERTO GALERA gives you a choice: either you plunge into bliss or go out with a bang.  Situated in Oriental, Mindoro Philippines, this municipality was once dubbed as “One of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World”, and it came as no surprise.  Here, forest-clad mountains drop hundreds of feet into the sea, surrounded by crashing waves, while coconut trees rise up from powdery white to cream sand beaches, lapped by  a beautiful mix of azure and seafoam green sea. But its most beautiful asset is found underwater, where rainbow-hued fishes congregate and play around sprawling coral gardens.  No wonder PUERTO GALERA was recognized by UNESCO as Man and Biosphere Reserve back in 1973 and is often included in the list of top diving sites in the Philippines.  However, since weekend trippers can crowd in and White Beach area, it can get pretty rowdy at night, best to book a room at a resort in advance and go here prepared.  Here’s my Puerto Galera Travel Guide blog to help you plan your trip.

TRAVEL BLOG CONTENTS

PUERTO GALERA TRAVEL GUIDE

How to get to puerto galera from manila via batangas.

puerto galera 14 (1 of 1)

Take a bus bound for Batangas Pier like Ceres, DLTB and JAM Transit in LRT Buendia (Manila), Cubao (Quezon City) or Alabang South Station (Muntilupa).  Travel time is roughly 2 hours depending on traffic. See the bus fare and bus schedule to Batangas Pier below.

JAM LINER BUS SCHEDULE TO BATANGAS PIER

BATANGAS PIER TO PUERTO GALERA

Boats in Batangas Pier can take you directly to Sabang (diving) or to White Beach (water sports, beach party and island hopping) in Puerto Galera for PHP 500 (USD 10/ SGD 13.80) roundtrip fare.  Beware of the touts (unless you need a porter for your bags), just go directly to the ticket office in Batangas Pier and buy your tickets there. Travel time is roughly 1 – 1.5 hours.  I recommend taking this route.

At Batangas Pier, there are also smaller ferries/ boats going to Puerto Galera Port (Muelle Port). Boat fare (one way) is roughly PHP 230 (USD 5/SGD 6.35) to Muelle Port. Travel time is roughly 1 – 1.5 hours.  At Muelle Port, take a tricycle to your resort (agree on the price before riding) or you can take a smaller boat to your resort (if your resort can’t be reached by tricycle).  Alternatively, you can also ride a public jeep at Muelle Port to Sabang or White Beach for about PHP 20 (USD 0.40/ SGD 0.55).

There is a terminal fee of PHP 30 (USD 0.60/ SGD 0.83) at Batangas Pier when you go to Puerto Galera.   And you also need to pay the PHP 50 (USD 0.99/ SGD 1.38) Environmental fee upon arrival in Puerto Galera.

Going back, if you purchased the roundtrip boat tickets, confirm 1 day before your departure.  There are ticketing booths in front of White Beach for the boat lines where you can confirm your departure.  Upon leaving Puerto Galera, pay the PHP 10 (USD 0.20/ SGD 0.28) terminal fee.

  By Ferry (RORO)

If you are taking your car, you need to take the ferry from Batangas Port.  There are ferries going to Calapan, Mindoro.   In Calapan, you can either take a jeepney to Puerto Galera for PHP 80 (USD 1.59/ SGD 2.21), travel time is 1.5 hours or take a passenger van to Puerto Galera for PHP 100 (USD 2/ SGD 2.76), trip take about 1 hour.

If taking a ferry from Batangas Port to Balatero Port.  Passenger fare is PHP 225 (USD 4.47/ SGD 6.21) while driver’s fare is PHP 129 (USD 2.56/ SGD 3.56).   There is a terminal fee at Batangas Port for PHP 30 (USD 0.60/ SGD 0.83) and terminal fee in Balatero Port is PHP 10 (USD 0.20/ SGD 0.28).  Meanwhile, vehicle (PUJ, car, SUV, AUV, minivan, etc.) fare is PHP 1,480 (USD 29.39/ SGD 40.85).

FASTCRAFT AND FERRY SCHEDULE (STARLITE)

BORACAY TO PUERTO GALERA

If you are coming from Boracay, you can take a 2GO ferry at Caticlan Jetty Port to Batangas Pier.  Ferry fare is PHP 679.64 (USD 13.50/ SGD 18.76) for Super Value Class, PHP 894.64 (USD 18/ SGD 24.69) for Tourist Class and PHP 1,117.50 (USD 22.19/ SGD 30.84) for Cabin for 4.  The ferry leaves Caticlan Port at about 9:00 PM every Thursday and Sunday and arrives the next day around 6:00 AM.  There is also a ferry at 8:00 AM every Tuesday and arrives around 6:15 AM the next day.

GETTING AROUND PUERTA GALERA

puerto galera 13

Tricycles are the main mode of transportation for short distance rides, but you can only hire one for Puerto Galera Land Tour.  Jeepneys are also available to take you to White Beach and Sabang from Muelle Port (Puerto Galera Port).

Puerto Galera’s marine life is simply stunning! Makes me want to learn diving.    PUERTO GALERA TRIP ITINERARY (2 day / 1 night)

puerto galera 16

I recommend staying in Puerto Galera for at least 3 days 2 nights for a more relaxed trip.   But if you are pressed for time, good news is, it is possible to do a weekend trip to Puerto Galera like a 2 day 1 night stay.  You leave Manila early morning on Saturday and go back on Sunday afternoon.  Can be quite tiring though, but yes, possible.  Below is my sample itinerary for weekend warriors. Feel free to tweak it depending on your trip schedule.

PUERTO GALERA TRIP BUDGET

puerto galera 29 (1 of 1)

Here’s a sample budget for a 2 days 1 night stay in Puerto Galera. Activities included are island hopping and snorkeling.  If you wish to do more activities like try the water sports or do the Land tour (Tamaraw Falls + Malasimbo + Mangyan Village).

PUERTO GALERA TRAVEL TIPS

puerto galera 33 (1 of 1)

⊕ Take sea-sickness pills before the boat trip to Puerto Galera.

⊕ Bring a dry bag to protect your cameras and waterproof pouch for your phone. Or much better if you just bring an underwater camera or action camera for snorkeling and other water sports.

⊕ Rice meals in Puerto Galera restaurants cost around PHP 80 (USD 1.59) – PHP 150 (USD 2.98).  Dishes served in posh resorts are slightly more expensive.

⊕ Try Mindoro Mud Sling at Mikkos bar, the famous cocktail of Puerto Galera popularized by the owner of Mikko’s bar, also available at other bars in White Beach.

⊕ There are many boat agents offering island hopping activities in White Beach (they’re holding laminated card boards with pictures of the islands and snorkeling sites). Standard rate is PHP 1,500 (USD 30), good for 8 persons.

⊕ Like beaches, sea urchins are present in snorkeling sites, so wear aqua shoes or full-foot fins when snorkeling and please do not step on corals.

⊕ If you want to snorkel in Coral Garden, Giant Clam and San Antonio Island, you need to pay additional PHP 600 (USD 12) for the small boat that will take you there.  The boat for island hopping cannot get closer to these spots as they can destroy the corals, a smaller boat is needed to transfer tourists to these sites.  If you wish to just snorkel in Coral Garden, small boat fee is PHP 300 (USD 6).

⊕ The boatmen at Coral Garden are fishermen of the islands, you are helping the local community by availing of the smaller boats when snorkeling. Several years ago, fishing was banned in the area so they can revive the marine life here and turn the area into a snorkeling and diving spot.

⊕ Stack up cash (Philippine currency)  before heading to Puerto Galera, because there are only 3 ATMs in town. Almost everything is on cash basis here.

⊕ Do not leave your trash anywhere.

I am a fan! 🙂 This made me want to go to Puerto Galera.

We are a couple, I just want to ask regarding the Island Hopping Tour of 1,500 for 8pax, do we need to pay the whole 1,500 even we’re just 2? Or we can wait for other groups if there’s any?

You can talk to other tourists. By the way, my friend Carla offers tours in PG, you can contact her at 09194214131. email: [email protected]

You will never run out of things to do here. Puerto Galera activities are as diverse as its well renowned marine life. Here are some of the top things you shouldn’t miss in Puerto Galera.

puerto galera things to do

White Beach is a popular tourist destination in Puerto Galera and many visitors come here every year.

As the name suggests, it is a long stretch of white sand and crystal blue water that is great for swimming and other water sports like jet skiing, kayaking, and banana boat rides.

It has many resorts and accommodations that will fit your budget - from luxurious 5-star hotels to mid-range resorts up to simple budget accommodations that will give you value for money.

You will also find a multitude of bars, shops, and restaurants near the shoreline, so it can get pretty crowded especially during the months of April to June, where many Filipino schoolchildren go on summer vacation and travel here with their families.

Talipanan Beach is a secluded spot with powdery white sands and calm waters that make it the perfect place to stay for a quiet, relaxing time.

Talipanan beach in Puerto Galera

You may also visit Talipanan Falls, which will take you about 30 minutes of trekking. While on the way, you might be interested in visiting Mangyan Village, where you can buy cultural products and souvenirs to take home with you.

puerto galera tamaraw falls

If you’re the type of person who prefers hiking and exploring the natural beauty of the island, look no further than Tamaraw Falls.

This twin waterfall is about 3 stories high and runs beneath a bridge and then flows towards two man-made swimming pools, where you can take a refreshing dip.

Tamaraw Falls is said to have the cleanest body of water in the province, so don’t forget your swimming gear to really enjoy the experience.

There are nipa huts around where you can have a barbecue or eat your packed lunch against a refreshing, nature-filled backdrop.

There are small stores that sell refreshments and beverages as well as snacks for those who did not bring their own.

Island or beach hopping destinations typically cover pocket beaches that include San Antonio Island (also known as Medio Island), Haligi beach and Sandbar Island (located in Boquete or Paniquian Island) and Bayanan beach.

San Antonio or Medio Island is well known for a stretch of white sand that the locals call Long Beach.

Island Hopping in Puerto Galera

You can also visit the underwater cave and go snorkeling at Coral Garden to swim with colorful fishes and see large coral plates.

You can also see giant clams in their natural habitat. When the waves are not too strong, you can also go visit an underwater cave in Long Beach, where you can swim in shallow crystal clear water and enjoy the beautiful rock formations.

Haligi beach in Boquete or Paniquian Island is another quiet island located on Muelle Bay where you can relax and enjoy the calm crystal blue water.

Swim with the fishes and go snorkeling to have a closer look at the marine life there.

If you head south of the island you will find Sandbar Island, a small strip of land connecting Boquete Island to the mainland of Mindoro island. It is also sometimes called Elizabeth’s Hideaway.

Further west is Bayanan beach, which features a concave-shaped shoreline that gives it calm blue waters, creating the perfect conditions for leisurely swimming and snorkeling. It is located just beside the White Beach.

If you venture west beyond White beach, you’ll find a less crowded hidden gem called Aninuan Beach.

Quiet beach of Aninuan Beach Resort

Aninuan Beach is also the gateway to Talipanan beach and its beautiful falls.

Aninuan Falls is yet another natural wonder that you can explore. if you don’t mind hiking along the river and find satisfaction in finding a hidden gem in the middle of this island, then you’ll enjoy this trip.

Just be mindful of the usual dangers that come with exploring natural structures like slippery boulders or steep rock formations, and you’ll have a memorable trip.

Aninuan Falls is located at the foot of Mt. Malasimbo, and there is an entrance fee.

Talipanan Falls in Puerto Galera

If you are planning to visit that Iraya-Mangyan Village, make sure to include Talipanan Falls as a side trip and hire a local guide. To get there, you’ll have to trek through the lush jungle for about 30 more minutes. There is an entrance fee to get to the Water sports part, and this includes a life vest.

Different Puerto Galera activities can be enjoyed here for a fee, which includes a water park, jet skiing, kayaking, snorkeling, banana boat ride, and others.

Another must-see natural wonder you should include in your list of Puerto Galera activities is a trip to the lesser-known but equally enchanting Tukuran Falls.

It features charming rock formations and refreshing clear water that you can’t resist but dive into!

When you swim underneath the falls and the water from above hits your shoulders, it’s like having a free back massage from Mother Nature.

One of the most unforgettable and unique experiences you should try here is the carabao (water buffalo) ride where a carabao pulls a wagon enough to fit 6 people.

This will take you through the shallow river while you feast your eyes on the lush tropical paradise on your way to the falls.

Sabang Beach is one of the first areas in Puerto Galera to transform into a major tourist attraction and is well-known to foreigners.

The Big La Laguna Beach and Small La Laguna Beach can be found in Sabang. Sabang Beach is more well-known for its diving sites, lively nightlife, and numerous shopping options.

If you’re looking for another tried and tested alcoholic drink aside from a bottle of local fave San Miguel Pale Pilsen, try the one that made White Beach famous - the Mindoro Sling.

It’s a cherry red cocktail of rum, grenadine syrup, sprite and fruit juices that can pack quite a punch, so be careful not to drink too much of it if you don’t want a hangover the next day.

You can order this at almost any bar along the beach, but the pitcher at Mikko’s Bar is said to be one of the best ones to try.

puerto galera activities

Indeed, for anyone looking for a quick weekend escape to the seaside, Puerto Galera beach has proven to be a tried and tested option.

When it comes to accessibility, value for money, and sheer variety of things to do or places to see, there is nothing quite like Puerto Galera.

Whether you’re looking for a laidback weekend lounging by the shore, an action-packed activity to get your adrenaline pumping, or a wholesome activity with your family, there’s something you can truly enjoy.

Puerto Galera Travel Guide: Sun, Sea, Sand & Fun

Puerto Galera

Welcome to Puerto Galera

Port of galleons is the English translation of Puerto Galera , as it was literally a safe haven for galleons and ships during heavy storms or squalls in the ancient era. With its deep natural harbors and enclosed bays, its very purpose as a secure anchorage remains true today.

Puerto Galera is a town in the northern coast of Mindoro Island, a vibrant destination and tourism hot spot of the province of Oriental Mindoro. It sits at the middle of the southern edge of Verde Island Passage, dubbed as the “center of the center of world’s marine biodiversity”. Its accessibility and proximity to Metro Manila and Southern Tagalog Region help make the town one of the most sought after destinations in Luzon.

Puerto Galera

The town has approximately 42 kilometers of coastline and a diverse underwater ecosystem that serves as home to variety of marine species, thus it is without a doubt that it is hailed as among the most popular and best dive destinations in the world. Coral gardens carpet its reefs, ship wrecks dot its seabed, tropical marine species dwell on its rich waters. In 1973, UNESCO designated Puerto Galera as a Man and Biosphere Reserve.

More than the bounty of its waters, Puerto Galera is blessed with abundance of natural wonders with variety of flora and fauna some of which are endemic to the place, from sea to summit, beneath and above. It is included in the elite list club of the “Most Beautiful Bays of the World”. With numerous white sand beaches, panoramic coves, verdant mountains, majestic waterfalls, snaking rivers and streams, picturesque sunrise and sunset, vibrant nightlife and more, Puerto Galera definitely has it all!
