Two icons of the Swinging Sixties died barely a day apart: France’s biggest rock star, and a woman who at age 19 ignited a scandal that helped topple Britain’s Conservative government.

Christine Keeler, the central figure in the sex-and-espionage Profumo scandal that rocked Cold War Britain, died late Monday at 75.

Johnny Hallyday, France’s biggest rock star for more than half a century, died early Wednesday at 74.

Hallyday, known simply as Johnny, made generations of fans in his native France squeal, jump and jive with tunes by American artists belted out in French. His death was a loss even for younger people who might have found his Elvis Presley-inspired act passe.

The beloved rocker’s stardom mostly remained confined to France, but there he was a legend, a man France’s president eulogized Wednesday as “a French hero.”

“We had built deep within ourselves the conviction that he was invincible. He is among these men who should have died 100 times because of their lifestyle, because of their overindulgence, because of their battles. But he never fell,” French President Emmanuel Macron, 39, said in a lyrical off-the-cuff tribute during a visit to Algiers.

Hallyday had been treated for lung cancer and repeated health scares in the years before he died, but performed as recently as the summer.

Hallyday’s widow, Laeticia Hallyday, said in a statement announcing his death that his battle with cancer had given “everyone extraordinary life lessons.”

“The heart beat so strongly in this body of a rocker who lived a life without concession for the stage, for his public, for those who adored and loved him,” her statement, transmitted overnight to the French national news agency AFP, said. “My man is no more.”

The French media reported widely that he died at his home west of Paris, which was quickly surrounded by mourning fans and police providing security.

“Hearing about Johnny’s death has hurt us because Johnny is our God and nobody can replace him,” said one fan, Yves Buisson, outside the Hallyday family’s gated home in Marnes-La-Coquette. His arms were covered with tattoos of the star.

Born in Paris on June 15, 1943, Hallyday stopped using his given name, Jean-Philippe Smet, when he was 16 years old and a budding rocker in London. Hallyday covered American songs in French, from “Johnny B. Goode” to “Black Is Black” and “Roll Over Beethoven.” He sang the “The House of the Rising Sun” in English — the melody of which was also used for one of his most famous songs, the 1964 “Le Penitencier.”

Hallyday gave his first professional concert in 1960, under the name Johnny, and put out his first album a year later. By 1962, he had met the woman who would be his wife for 15 years, and remained his friend to the end, singing star Sylvie Vartan. That year, he also made an album in Nashville, Tennessee, and rubbed shoulders with American singing greats.

Hallyday played with Jimmy Hendrix during the 1960s and once recorded a song with Led Zeppelin founder Jimmy Page.

With his square-jawed good looks and piercing blue eyes, Hallyday was often sought-out for the cinema, playing in French director Jean-Luc Godard’s “Detective” (1984) and with other illustrious directors including Costa-Gavras.

However, it was the rocker’s personal life, and his marriage to Laeticia, his fourth wife, that gave him a mellow edge. He spoke lovingly of daughters Jade, now 13, and Joy, 9, who were adopted from Vietnam. Hallyday is also survived by two other children: David Hallyday, 51, his son with Vartan, and Laura Smet, 34, with noted French actress Nathalie Baye.

Hallyday released his last album “Rester Vivant” — or “Staying Alive” — last year, and performed this summer as part of the “Old Crooks” tour with long-time friends and veteran French musicians Eddy Mitchell and Jacques Dutronc.

Memorial plans weren’t immediately announced.

Christine Keeler, 1963. (AP Photo/FILE)

Across the English Channel, Christine Keeler’s son, Seymour Platt, posted on Facebook that his mother died late Monday night at a hospital near Farnborough in southern England. She had suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

“As many of you know my mother, Christine Keeler, fought many fights in her eventful life, some fights she lost but some she won,” he said. “She earned her place in British history but at a huge personal price. We are all very proud of who she was.”

Keeler was a model and nightclub dancer in 1963 when she had an affair with British War Secretary John Profumo.

When it emerged that Keeler had also slept with a Soviet naval attache with ties to Russian intelligence, the collision of sex, wealth and national security issues caused a sensation and helped topple the Conservative government.

Profumo eventually resigned in disgrace after lying to the House of Commons about his relationship with Keeler. He threatened at the time to sue anyone who suggested there had been any inappropriate behavior with her.

The stunning sex scandal shed light on a previously well-hidden world of sex and alcohol fueled orgies among the political elite.

The scandal also made Keeler famous. A naked photo of her straddling the back of a chair is among the most famous U.K. images of the 1960s. She spent the rest of her life trying to escape her unwanted notoriety.

Born in 1942, Keeler left school at 15 and shortly after started working as a showgirl on Greek Street in the heart of London’s Soho district, known at the time for its strip clubs and sleazy entertainment.

Keeler met men like Profumo after befriending a high-society osteopath, Dr. Stephen Ward, who introduced her to a number of powerful figures.

Ward was put on trial and took a fatal overdose the night before he was convicted of living off immoral earnings.

Keeler was imprisoned for nine months after admitting perjury and conspiring to obstruct justice.

More than two decades later, she expressed regret: “I was just a 19-year-old girl having a good time. I loved every minute of it. But if I had known then what was going to happen, I’d have run off and not stopped until I had reached my mum.”

Keeler moved on after the scandal. She was married twice and had two sons, even as pop culture breathed new life into the Profumo affair.

In a 1989 movie, “Scandal,” Keeler was played by Joanne Whalley, her friend Mandy Rice-Davies by Bridget Fonda, and Profumo by Ian McKellen.

In 2013, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage musical “Stephen Ward” — in which Keeler was portrayed by Charlotte Spencer — premiered in London.
