"The Traditional Urban City of Tamil Nadu"

Tirunelveli tourism.

Tirunelveli, also called Tinnevelly, is a big city in the midst of numerous small towns, each with its own bounty of beautiful sights, temples, waterfalls and much more. Unlike many temple towns, this 2000-year-old ancient city also does offer many other sites to its tourists. The city is located on the west bank of the Tambraparni River which provides irrigation water for crops of rice and cotton.

Though it is one of the largest cities in Tamil Nadu and has a booming agrarian economy, Tirunelveli is far from being a regular commercial hub. It has its roots very much intact, with multiple religious splendours waiting to be discovered. And to complete your trip, it also has some delicacies you can gorge on!

tirunelveli best tourist places

Tirunelveli, an ancient city in the southernmost area of the country, is a city that I wanted to visit for a long time. Fortunately, I got the opportunity of doing that last winter, and it was a splendid experience. The city is one of the most important religious centers in South India , but the city has much more to it than places with religious significance. Its geographical features are wide and varied. From high mountains to low plains, mysterious forests to stunning sea coasts; the city boasts of numerous unexplored places. My experience in and around the city was excellent, and I would like to share the best places to visit in Tirunelveli with the readers.

  • Venkatachalapathy Temple
  • Sankarankovil Temple
  • District Science Center

1. Papanasam

If a day of relaxation and recreation is what you seek in Tirunelveli, then Papanasam should be your destination. This small town had me in raptures throughout the entire duration of my stay. It is perhaps the greenest area in and around Tirunelveli thanks to the surrounding paddy fields. The town also boasts of numerous waterfalls and river streams, which are a delight for any nature lover. The surrounding landscape is breath-taking to behold, with the Manjolai Hills providing the most picture-perfect backdrop. If you are interested in natural medicine, Papanasam is sure to impress you with its wide range of unique medicinal herbs. These 100+ herbs are unique to this place and can cure a diverse array of ailments.

2. Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve

Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve

Set in the towering Western Ghats mountain range, this wildlife reserve is a must-visit for animal lovers. The reserve spreads over almost 1000 sq. km., and is the best place to observe the animal life of the region. The natural flora and fauna of the region are simply spectacular to witness, but what steals the show is the sight of the Royal Bengal Tiger. Many people spend hours trying to get a glimpse of the majestic beast, but I guess I was very lucky to spot one in a matter of minutes. I thought the Royal Bengal Tiger was native only to the Sundarbans of Bengal. However, Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve gave me ample proof that this regal creature exists in the South as well.

3. Nellaiappar Temple

Temple Tirunelveli

Tirunelveli is best known for its temples, and I knew that I had to visit the city’s most prominent temples. The Nellaiappar Temple is undoubtedly the city’s biggest temple in terms of architecture. The temple takes its name from the city’s ancient title, Nellai, and it is a spectacle to behold. The city’s oldest temple pays homage to the mighty Lord Shiva. Built completely in the Dravidian style, the highlights of this temple are the gopuram (central pillar) and its musical pillars.

4. Kutralam

The natural delights of the Western Ghats in Tirunelveli don’t just stop at Papanasam and Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve. If you are a nature lover like me, you have to visit Kutralam. Fondly known as the “Spa of South India”, Kutralam is home to some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Western Ghats. It is also known for its gorgeous greenery, which is a sight for sore eyes. The most well-known waterfall of this area is the Shenbagadevi Falls. Make sure to visit this waterfall if you visit Kutralam. You can also check out the Shenbagadevi Temple, which is in the vicinity.

5. Venkatachalapathy Temple

When I told the locals about how amazed I was by the architecture of the Nellaiappar Temple, they told me to go to Krishnapuram. Krishnapuram is a small temple village near Tirunelveli, and once I reached, I understood why the locals had asked me to come here. The village is home to the Venkatachalapathy Temple, another grand architectural marvel. Unlike the Nellaiappar Temple, the presiding deity here is Venkatachalapathy, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The most spectacular architectural sight here is the gopuram, which is extremely bright and colorful. The locals told me that the origins of this temple go back almost 9000 years.

6. Sankarankovil Temple

The Sankarankovil Temple is another marvelous temple of the city that pays homage to Sankaranarayanan. Sankaranarayanan is a God that is an amalgamation of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. The central pillar or gopuram in this temple boasts of 9 tiers and is 135 feet tall. When I visited the temple in winter, it was not very crowded. However, locals tell me that the temple sees huge crowds from July till August every year. It is at this time of the year when the temple plays host to the Adi Tapas Festival.

7. District Science Center

Tirunelveli also has a well-known science museum. The District Science Center, as it is known, was inaugurated in 1987. Located centrally in the city, the museum has four galleries that you can visit. The main attractions of this science museum are the Mirror Magic Gallery, Digital Planetarium, and the Mini 3D Theater. Apart from the holidays of Diwali and Pongal, the museum remains open throughout the year. You can visit the museum from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Entry charges start from Rs. 20 per person.

Things to Do in Tirunelveli :

tirunelveli best tourist places

1. Eat Halwa From a Local Shop

Tirunelveli is so famous for its temples that people often forget about the legendary halwa that they make here. Halwa is a sweet that is common throughout India. Made of ghee, wheat, and sugar, it is a fairly simple sweet but one that is difficult to master. However, the makers of this sweet in Tirunelveli have definitely mastered it and you should try some at the local shops.

2. Watch a Cricket Match in a City Stadium

The youngsters of the city are very much into sports and athletics. Cricket is the most popular sport, and regular matches are held at the city’s two-most prominent stadiums; Anna Stadium and VOC Ground. You could go to either stadium and attend a local cricket match. These stadiums also host matches of other sports such as hockey, football, and volleyball.

How to Reach Tirunelveli ?

I have told you a lot about the tourist places in Tirunelveli but I have not told you how to reach this ancient city. As it is one of the most prominent cities in Tamil Nadu, accessibility is not an issue. The city is easily accessible by both road and rail. The Tirunelveli Junction Railway Station makes the city easy to reach by train. When I went, I decided to fly to Tuticorin Airport, which is around 35 km from the city. Tirunelveli is well connected to all other major towns and cities of Tamil Nadu through National Highways and State Highways.

Even though Tirunelveli is nestled in the Western Ghats mountain range, it is quite a hot city. The summers here can be very difficult, and if you plan to attend the Adi Tapas Festival, you have to bear with scorching temperatures. In recent years, the temperature in Tirunelveli during summers has soared beyond 40°C. It’s best to avoid the city altogether in the summer months and visit during winters. The winters here are quite pleasant and temperatures generally remain between 24°C-30°C.

Monsoons hit the city hard from September to November. It is definitely a better time to visit Tirunelveli than summer. However, the heavy rains may make travel difficult and can also make the trekking trails in the Western Ghats quite slippery. But if enjoying the waterfalls of the region is your priority, there’s no better time to visit than the monsoons. Thanks to the high levels of rainfall, the waterfalls swell and look absolutely stunning.

Points to Keep in Mind

Tirunelveli is a safe city with a low crime rate. However, as the city is known for being a religious center, it’s best to wear modest clothing. While men in the city wear western clothing without any fuss and bother, it’s not quite the same for women. The majority of women in the city wear traditional clothing. If you don’t want to attract too much attention, you should dress according to local customs.

If you visit the city during the summer months, you should take care to drink plenty of fluids. A lot of people suffer from dehydration in the scorching heat of the summer months. Extreme dehydration may lead to emergency medical situations. To avoid such situations, keep drinking water throughout your stay in the city and try to venture out from your hotels only during the evenings.

All in all, I have to say that my week-long stay in Tirunelveli made for a very memorable experience. I realized that the city has many things to offer. From some of India’s most ancient temples to natural wonders to a well-developed science museum; the city offers a wide range of experiences. The incredible halwa made my experience sweeter for sure. When it was finally time to leave, I reflected fondly on my time spent here. I’m sure that in the future, I will be back to explore the things that I could not find time to delve deep into. All I can say is that I am so very thankful that I could get to know Tirunelveli and its local culture. The city may be advertised as a city of temples, but trust me, it’s much more than that.

So, if you have plans to visit South India any time in the future, definitely put Tirunelveli in your list of places to visit. As long as it is a trip planned for winter, you will definitely enjoy the city and its surroundings.

A sickening image of Hamas terrorists parading a slain woman’s near-naked body through the streets of Gaza has been awarded a prestigious photo-of-the-year prize — sparking fierce outrage from those who slammed the win as “an outrageous desecration of Jewish life.”

The grim photo featuring Shani Louk’s body was among a collection of 20 images that helped the Associated Press secure first place in one of the Pictures of the Year International award categories earlier this month.

The awards, which are run by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism, are self-described as being the world’s oldest photojournalism competition.

News of the AP’s win in the “Team Picture Story of the Year” category prompted widespread backlash on social media, with some slamming the accolade and the use of Louk’s image as an “outrageous desecration of Jewish life.”

Shani Louk

“I am DISGUSTED, SHOCKED and ENRAGED that this @AP image of a murdered Shani Louk from October 7th was given picture of the year,” one social media user posted on X. “This is the value of Israeli women to you?”

“This is just wrong and sick,” another user raged of the award.

Louk, a 23-year-old German Israeli tattoo artist, was among the scores of innocent music festival-goers taken hostage when Hamas terrorists carried out its deadly Oct. 7 onslaught.

She quickly became one of the  faces of the war after the shocking images of her lifeless body on the back of pickup truck started going viral.

An Instagram post announcing the win

Israeli authorities later confirmed the young woman had tragically been beheaded by her captors.

In announcing the AP’s win, the award organizers posted the unblurred image of Louk’s lifeless body on its Instagram page.

The photo, though, appears to have since been deleted in the wake of the backlash.

As the outrage over the AP’s award win mounted on social media, some users argued the competition was dishonoring Louk’s memory by dredging up the photo.

“The family of Oct 7 victim Shani Louk want her to be remembered alive & smiling. One of the world’s biggest photojournalism prizes, ran by @RJI, trampled on their wishes, awarding an @AP photo of her mutilated body,” one user wrote on X.

The slain woman quickly became one of the faces of the war after the shocking images of her lifeless body on the back of pickup truck started going viral.

Another tweeted: “This is how we choose to remember the beautiful Shani Louk. We will not allow her memory to be trampled by the inhuman thugs celebrating the AP photo of her tragic murder.”

Meanwhile, many took aim at Ali Mahmud, the freelance photojournalist who snapped the image, arguing he shouldn’t be celebrated over such a tragedy.

“He is being celebrated for taking this photo of murder-rapist-terrorists with the brutalized and contorted body of Shani Louk,” one X user noted.

Pictures of the Year International organizers didn’t immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

By Rohan Mattu

Updated on: March 28, 2024 / 12:07 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday  led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city.

A bridge column was hit by a large container ship around 1:30 a.m., sending bridge workers and vehicles into the Patapsco River. A water search for six missing workers turned to a recovery effort Tuesday night.

Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

Locator map showing the typical traffic routes of cargo vessels passing beneath the bridge and the trajectory Dali followed prior to the allision.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future.

The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access.

The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed.

Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes.

Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.

10.jpg

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping.

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA.

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic.

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.

The Best Places to Visit in Spain

By Siobhan Reid

Spain contains multitudes—seriously. Spanning 17 autonomous regions and two small enclaves in North Africa, the country is a cradle of diverse cultures, geography, traditions, even languages. And while there’s nothing wrong with a sun-and-sangria holiday, there’s so much more to see and do: embark on a luxury train ride across Spain’s mountainous north, go on a wine and architecture pilgrimage in Rioja, discover the sleepy side of Ibiza, and travel back in time to Andalucía’s Moorish past. The landscapes are just as diverse—from Lanzarote’s lunar lava plains to the lush archipelago of Islas Cíes and the stunning rock formations in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Nature Reserve (Europe’s only desert!).

First-timers typically make a beeline for Madrid and Barcelona , but even then, most people will only scratch the surface of these cities and their surroundings. Just an hour outside Madrid are art-filled medieval castles, mountain hiking trails, a “ beach ” for beating the heat, and even an under-the-radar Picasso museum . Plus, there’s so much to see in Catalonia beyond Barcelona, not least the picturesque coves and charming seaside towns of the Costa Brava . One trip isn’t enough—Spain is a place to discover again and again.

Having a hard time deciding where to go first? Here are 10 trip ideas to get you started.

Madrid: A Feast for the Senses

Image may contain City Architecture Building Cityscape Urban Metropolis Downtown Road Outdoors and Car

The Spanish capital is having a moment, with a flurry of hot new restaurants like Tramo and Bao Li , the just-opened Royal Collections Gallery , and a crop of fabulous new and revamped hotels . There’s never been a better time to visit. Regardless of your travel plans, you’ll want to set aside time to stroll around the UNESCO-recognized El Retiro Park, which spans 308 acres of classical gardens, trickling fountains and lakes, and expansive green lawns perfect for beating the summer heat. The park itself is home to a clutch of stellar museums, but nothing compares to the nearby Museo Nacional Del Prado—one of the world’s most important institutions for European painting—or the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, which houses Picasso’s Guernica, among other masterpieces. And don’t sleep on the galleries, either: there has been a wave of recent openings including the Malaga-born Badr el Jundi , the laboratory-like El Chico gallery, and the up-and-coming Arniches 26 .

Stay Here: Set inside a 19 th -century palace in the upscale Salamanca district, Rosewood Villa Magna exudes an air of hushed luxury. Still, it manages to feel very local and stitched into the fabric of the city—its restaurants and seasonal pop-up concepts are just as much of a hit among madrileños as out-of-towners. Don’t leave without enjoying a scalp-tingling treatment in the property’s fabulous new hair spa.

In recent years, Mallorca has shed its reputation as a package holiday destination and emerged as one of Spain’s most sophisticated hotspots. Now, the Balearic island is synonymous with art and culture, hip hotels, and stellar boutique shopping. Get in step with the island’s rhythms in the capital of Palma, home to indie shops like Arquinesia Perfumes and Cortana , lively bars and restaurants including Brutus and CAV , and one magnificent 14 th -century cathedral—the island’s most recognizable landmark. Learn about Mallorca’s rich craft traditions such as “llata” basket weaving and Ikat textile design by signing up for a workshop on the dada-days platform, or head to the mountain towns of Deià and Sóller to discover locally-made goods and artworks at creative businesses like Earth Core , Datura Studio Isla or the café-cum-ceramic-shop De Moniö .

Stay Here: Mallorca’s new kid on the block is the 14-room Portella Palma , launched by brother-and-sister team Enrique and Inés Miró-Sans of Barcelona’s Casa Bonay fame and designed by Parisian design duo Festen. Once the home of Spanish painter Joaquín Torrents, the 17 th -century palazzo still feels like an artist’s residence, with antique furniture, views of the city’s 11 th -century Arab Baths, and artful details around every corner—from a Joan Miró lithograph to custom pieces by 300-year-old Mallorcan glass company Gordiola.

Fresh Air and Bold Flavor in Asturias

Image may contain Landscape Nature Outdoors Scenery Mountain Mountain Range Peak Panoramic Grass and Plant

Northern Spain has long been overlooked by tourists, but the mountainous principality of Asturias is (finally) having its moment in the sun. A new high-speed train —20 years in the making—now links Madrid and Asturias, reducing the journey to just over 3 hours. And the capital city, Oviedo, has been named the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy in 2024 for its gastronomic delicacies ( fabada stew, hundreds of regional cheese varieties) and fabulous restaurants like NM by Michelin-feted chef Nacho Manzano, who also runs the region’s legendary two-starred Michelin restaurant Casa Marcial . Beyond being a gastronomic paradise, Asturias is also a haven for outdoorsy types: a third of the region is environmentally protected, making it prime for adventures such as hut-to-hut trekking in the Picos de Europa mountain range (which also straddle Cantabria and Castilla y León). Don’t miss the tiny village of Covadonga—the gateway to the Picos de Europa—which is famed for its dramatic, cliff-hugging Basilica of Nuestra Señora de las Batallas.

Stay Here: The best new addition to the region’s hospitality scene is CoolRooms Palacio de Luces , a restored palace located just outside the charming fishing village of Lastres. Don’t be fooled by its aristocratic interiors—rates start at around $180 per night—and be sure to make reservations at the hotel’s excellent Asturian restaurant, whose dishes spotlight local ingredients like sea urchin caviar and smoked Los Caserinos cheese.

La Rioja: Where Wine Meets Culture

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Countryside Rural Farm and Aerial View

Rioja needs no introduction. Located an hour’s drive south of Bilbao, Spain’s premier wine region is home to more than 500 wineries and is known worldwide for its bold, oaky reds. It’s also a must for architecture lovers, with high-design bodegas dreamed up by Frank Gehry, Santiago Calatrava, and Zaha Hadid. You’ll see the best of the region on a custom tour with the husband-and-wife team behind Rioja Wine Trips . But be sure to discover the gems of the wider La Rioja province, too, including the small medieval hilltop town of Briones, which is home to the excellent Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture (don’t skip the museum’s Garden of Bacchus, where you will find 220 varieties of grapes from around the world). It’s also worth motoring out to the small town of Ezcaray to tour the workshop of century-old, family-run textile brand Mantas Ezcaray, which regularly collaborates with high-fashion brands including Loewe and Hermès.

Stay Here: Iñigo Aragón and Pablo López Navarro are the founders of Madrid’s coveted Casa Josephine interior design and architecture studio. They’re also the proprietors of a five-bedroom guest house in the 200-person village of Sorzano. The Riojan townhouse is straight out of the pages of a design magazine, with an impeccable mix of furniture spanning styles and periods. Ask the owners for their black book of restaurants and bodegas.

Discover Ibiza’s Quiet Side

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Sea Water Coast Shoreline Boat Transportation Vehicle and Bay

Most serenity-seekers decamp to the lesser-developed Balearic isles of Formentera and Menorca. But Ibiza also has a quiet side, with pristine secluded beaches, a pastoral countryside, and small inland villages with a bohemian soul that harks back to the island’s hippie past. One of its best-known natural areas is the UNESCO-listed Ses Salines Natural Park, a vast ecological sanctuary with salt flats and roughly 200 species of birds. The island is also known for its dense meadows of water-cleaning Posidonia seagrass, which are among the best preserved in the Mediterranean. The once-sleepy town of Santa Gertrudis is now one of the island’s hotspots, with trendy boutiques like Es Cucons , lively restaurants including an outpost of New York-born Il Buco , and an all-seasons Parra & Romero gallery. Not far from that is the village of Sant Mateu d’Albarca, where you’ll find the farm-to-table restaurant Juntos , which serves vegetable-centric dishes with ingredients sourced from the 173-acre farm. (Don’t leave without perusing ceramics, botanical-dyed robes, and other goodies at the expertly edited on-site boutique). Even the island’s famous party scene has grown up; today, the hardest rope in town is arguably the gastronomic chiringuito Jondal , helmed by El Bulli alum Rafa Zafra.

Stay Here: Founded in 1999 by Barcelona native Margaret Von Korff and her Ibiza-born husband Luis Trigueros, Cas Gasi is one of the island’s original agroturismos . A 19 th -century finca is at the heart of the sprawling estate, which comprises four hectares of fruit orchards and vegetable gardens along with two pools, an open-air-yoga platform, and a revamped spa offering reiki and Ayurvedic massages.

Catalonia Beyond Barcelona

There are a lot of reasons to love Barcelona right now: hip gastro wine bars like Tiberi and Masa Vins , edgy new art spaces like VASTO and Araucària , revamped icons such as the century-old Grand Hotel Central , and big-ticket events such as the forthcoming Louis Vuitton-sponsored America’s Cup yacht race. But there’s so much more to discover outside Catalonia’s capital. In the seaside city of Tarragona, a short train ride away, you can tour a second-century Roman amphitheater and one of the largest and best-preserved circus complexes in the Roman Empire. Closer to Barcelona, the charming town of Sitges has a seafront promenade lined with grand mansions and atmospheric terrazas and is a great jumping-off point for hikes in Garraf Natural Park. Wine lovers should consider a day trip to the Penedès, about 30 miles west of Barcelona, which is the heart of Spain’s cava production. Meanwhile, those wanting to hit the beach should venture north to the famed Costa Brava to discover its picturesque coves and charming coastal towns like Cadaqués and Begur.

Stay Here: The medieval city of Girona is one of Catalonia’s lesser-known gems. The best place to stay? The newly opened Palau Fugit hotel, set inside an 18 th -century palace in the heart of the Barri Velli district. The ground-floor courtyard is always hosting public programming like concerts and art exhibitions, there’s a leafy outdoor courtyard with a heated pool, and one of the 25 suites is set inside an ancient stone watchtower.

Time Travel in Andalucía

Image may contain Architecture Building Castle Fortress and Outdoors

Andalucía is a mille-feuille of civilizations and cultures; however, its top attractions are the towering fortresses, monumental mosques, and awe-inspiring palaces constructed during the Moors’ 800-year rule. There are few sites as impressive or as well preserved as Granada’s formidable Alhambra fortress, which contains a series of 13 th to 15 th -century Moorish palaces and gardens, backed by the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada. Still, you don’t need to endure long ticket lines to step back in history. In Códoba, chef Paco Morale’s two-starred Michelin-starred Noor (“light” in Arabic) borrows inspiration from Andalucía’s layered, overlapping history: currently on offer are a trio of menus inspired by the “Golden Age” of the 16 th and 17 th centuries, with dishes incorporating prized ingredients such as saffron and orange blossom water. In Malaga, the popular El Pimpi restaurant—which streams across an 18 th -century townhouse across from the Roman theater—feels like a time capsule with its wine barrel decoration, bull head taxidermy, and old black-and-white photographs. And it goes without saying that Seville tiene un color especial (or so the song goes…)—just strolling its atmospheric streets is like traveling back in time, but be sure to set aside time to tour the Casa de Pilatos palace, which features some of the most impressive Mudejar-style tile work we’ve ever seen.

Stay Here: Located an hour outside Seville, Caballo de Hierro is a 54,000-acre estate centered on a sprawling country house that’s kitted with antique treasures and embroidered textiles. But the highlight is the turquoise-tile stable housing a team of thoroughbred Spanish and Arab horses, which can be ridden through the property's flower-covered hills.

Beauty and Bounty in the Basque Country

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Landscape Scenery Plant Vegetation Tree Countryside Land Woodland and Mountain

It’s impossible to talk about the Basque Country without mentioning the food. The region is known for its boisterous pintxo bars, cider houses, and more Michelin stars per square meter than almost anywhere else in the world. You could spend days eating your way through Bilbao and San Sebastián, but don’t leave out the many culinary institutions outside the city like the family-run Casa Cámara restaurant in the fishing village of Pasai Donibane, just north of San Sebastián, which uses a pulley to lift shellfish out of the water and into the middle of the dining room. In recent decades, the País Basco has also established a reputation as one of Spain’s most vibrant arts hubs, home to heavy-hitting institutions like the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and contemporary galleries including Galeria Espacio Marzana and Villa Magdalena . Be sure not to miss the Chillida Leku sculpture park dedicated to the Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida.

Stay Here: San Sebastián is packed to the gills with smart city hotels. But for a bit more room to spread out, make the newly revamped Villa Soro —located just a 10-minute walk from Zurriola beach—as your home base. Reopened in 2022 by the Soldevila-Ferrer family, who also own Barcelona’s Hotel Majestic and Mallorca’s Sant Francesc Hotel Singular, the heritage property has refined interiors, original details like a wood-carved staircase, and artwork by famous Basque artists including Eduardo Chillida.

A Design Detour on Lanzarote

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Sea Water Car Transportation and Vehicle

No man is an island, but we have the visionary artist César Manrique to thank for the Canarian jewel that is Lanzarote. When others disparaged the island as being the ugliest in the entire archipelago—“nothing but camels and stones”—Manrique marveled at its elemental beauty and rustic simplicity. During the last two decades of his life, he devoted himself to creating gardens, lookouts, and cultural centers while protecting its coastline from the mass development you see on some of the other Canary Isles. His influence is everywhere, from the Timanfaya National Park (where he designed the tourist facilities) to the island’s Museum of Modern Art, the popular Jameos del Agua lava caves, and his former house turned museum. Once you’ve immersed yourself in the world of all things Manrique, discover Lanzarote’s other allures such as its otherworldly vineyards, planted in volcanic ash soil and encircled by low-lying rock walls—the designs are so artful, you might think Manrique had something to do with it.

Stay Here: Set inside the former home of César Manrique’s father, the 20-room César Lanzarote is a singular place to stay. It also has a prized location within La Geria Natural Park, surrounded by the estate’s original vineyards. Still, the most show-stopping feature might be designer Virginia Nieto’s island-inspired interiors—all white and green tones, stone and wood surfaces, and linen fabrics.

Seeing Green in Galicia

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Sea Water Shoreline Coast and Bay

You don’t need to hike the Camino de Santiago to discover the wonders of Galicia. The new Costa Verde Express luxury train whisks travelers across Spain’s verdant north, with stops in picturesque Galician towns like Viveiro and Ribadeo and the magnificent capital of Santiago de Compostela, where travelers will have the chance to tour the cathedral and dine at the city’s famed parador , one of the oldest hotels in Spain. Increasingly, travelers are using the waterfront city of Vigo as the jumping-off point for their Galician adventures, whether it’s exploring the villages along the Vigo estuary, hiking to the archaeological remains of Monte do Facho, or exploring the postcard-perfect beaches of Islas Cíes, a 45-minute ferry ride away. And if you find yourself in the fishing village of Corrubedo, be sure to check out David Chipperfield’s Bar do Porto , which serves Galician wines and fresh Atlantic seafood.

Stay Here: A revamped 18 th -century paper factory is the unlikely setting of Galicia’s most sumptuous hotel: the family-run A Quinta da Auga country manor, located a 10-minute drive from Santiago de Compostela. The property’s tranquil riverside setting is complemented by its refined yet homey interiors, sublime spa, and verdant gardens.

The 10 Best Places To See The 2024 Solar Eclipse In The South

On Monday, April 8, a historic solar eclipse is set to pass through the United States, Mexico, and Canada—making it the only eclipse in the 21 st century to pass through all three countries. In the U.S., 13 states are partially in the path of totality, and five of those states are in the South. Parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kentucky will all experience a total solar eclipse (the first since 2017), and everyone’s gearing up for the big show. From town festivals to hosted watch parties to hotel packages to food and drink specials, no one intends to let this momentous occasion pass without a bit of fanfare. Here are the best Southern places where you can see the solar eclipse in 2024 . Just don’t forget your special solar eclipse-watching glasses or you could seriously harm your eyesight!

What Is A Solar Eclipse?

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on the Earth that blocks out some or all of the Sun’s rays. This rare phenomenon causes the sky to darken during the middle of the day as if it were dusk or dawn. Places that are in the eclipse’s path of totality (meaning the Moon is perfectly positioned to fully block the Sun), will see the most dramatic darkening.

When Is the 2024 Solar Eclipse?

The 2024 solar eclipse will take place on Monday, April 8, but when you see the eclipse depends on where you lie on its path. The eclipse will start in the U.S. at 1:27 p.m. CST in Texas and then travel in a northeast path until it appears in Maine beginning at 3:29 p.m. EST and concluding at 3:33 p.m. EST.

Where To See The Eclipse In Texas

Texas is one of the best places to see the eclipse because the eclipse will take a wide route through the state, meaning dozens of towns will experience totality. Forecasts also show clear skies for much of the state, providing optimal viewing conditions.

San Antonio, Texas

Firmly in the path of totality, the Alamo City is ready to do the solar eclipse right. There will be viewing parties big and small popping up all over the city on April 8, but one of the best spots to see the show is from the rooftop of the Thompson San Antonio Riverwalk hotel. Sitting high at 20 stories above the famous Riverwalk, the hotel’s signature indoor-outdoor rooftop restaurant The Moon’s Daughters is an ideal spot to take it all in. Join for a special Solar Brunch from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (just before totality begins) complete with themed cocktails, entertainment, and complimentary viewing glasses.

Explore San Antonio

Fort Worth, Texas

Another city in the path of totality, Fort Worth will experience totality for about 2 minutes and 30 seconds starting at 1:40 p.m. CST. The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and the Fort Worth Botanic Garden will co-host a community watch party that will include family-friendly games, entertainment, and education. Those visiting from out of town can stay at the Crescent Hotel and take advantage of their special Eclipse Package that includes accommodations, a $50 food and beverage credit for a special eclipse happy hour at the Circle Bar, and complimentary glasses so you can view the show from the lawn of the Kimbell Art Museum directly across the street.

Explore Fort Worth

Houston, Texas

Though Houston doesn’t fall in the path of totality, it will see 94% obscuration which is pretty high compared to lots of other places around the U.S. that will see much less. One reason to watch in Houston is to attend the Total Solar Eclipse Celebration at the Space Center Houston . There’s no better experience than to visit the museum and space center, learn all about the galaxies, and then round out your trip by seeing a rare natural phenomenon.

Explore Houston

Grapevine, Texas

The wide-open spaces and gorgeous vistas of the Texas Hill Country make Grapevine a top place to consider for eclipse travel. The small town is going all out for the eclipse with a giant party in the Main Street Historic District with local restaurants and businesses featuring galactic-themed food and drink specials. They’re also offering a VIP Experience at Peace Plaza, and boutique property Hotel Vin will release a special limited-edition Eclipse Bourbon and host a Lunar Lunch.

Explore Grapevine

Kerrville, Texas

As the Primary Eclipse Partner for NASA, you may as well call this small town in Texas Hill Country Solar Eclipse Central. NASA will host the Kerrville Eclipse Festival beginning at 10 a.m. on April 8 at Louise Hays Park, which is just a few miles from the exact center line of totality. Programming will include scientific speakers, live music, children’s activities, and a great place to experience 4 minutes and 25 seconds of totality.

Where To See The Eclipse In Arkansas

A large portion of Arkansas will also experience eclipse totality on the 8 th , making it an equally desirable place to visit for the galactic event.

Little Rock, Arkansas

Head to the state’s capital for an eclipse party to remember. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock is hosting a full-day of activities that range from educational talks to family-friendly games and laser demonstrations. Totality will reach Little Rock at 1:51 p.m. CST and last for about 2 minutes and 20 seconds.

Explore Little Rock

Hot Springs, Arkansas

As one of only two national parks in the path of totality for the 2024 eclipse, Hot Springs National Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas might be one of the most sought-after destinations for eclipse viewing. The park has only been in the path of totality two other times—once in 1834 and another time in 1918. The next time the eclipse reaches Arkansas will be 2045, so don’t miss your chance to get in on the action. Eclipse Fest , featuring presentations from visiting scientists, activities, and demonstrations, will take place in the park on Arlington Lawn on April 6-7.

Explore Hot Springs

Where To See The Eclipse In Missouri

A much smaller portion of Missouri is in the path of totality than in Arkansas and Texas, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still great places to see the eclipse in the Show Me State.

Branson, Missouri

Though Branson didn’t quite make the cut-off for totality, the Silver Dollar City will experience nearly 99% obscurity. If you’re looking for a larger city with plenty of amenities for your eclipse trip, Branson is your spot. For a scenic home base from which to take in the eclipse, head to Branson Lakes Resort or Branson Woods Resort , both of which are offering Eclipse Watch Parties featuring themed snacks, games, and music.

Where To See The Eclipse In Kentucky

Only a couple places in Kentucky will experience totality. Luckily, the charming town of Paducah is one of them.

Paducah, Kentucky

Small town vibes with big city perks like great dining and accommodations make Paducah a wonderful place to visit . The town celebrates the eclipse with their X Marks the Spot event, a two-day community festival in historic downtown that will include street vendors, arts and crafts activities, and specials at local restaurants and bars.

Explore Paducah

Where to See The Solar Eclipse in Oklahoma

Only 11 destinations in Oklahoma will experience totality, but most are teeny tiny. Broken Bow is one of only a handful with a population over 2,000.

Broken Bow, Oklahoma

The total eclipse will last for 4 minutes and 17 seconds in Broken Bow, starting at 1:45 p.m. CST, which is one of the longest durations for a U.S. destination outside of Texas. If you’re looking for a quieter experience to watch the eclipse with loved ones, book a cabin around Broken Bow Lake, pre-order special viewing glasses online, and host your own private watch party.

This Is the Best U.S. City to Live in for 2024

A mid-size city in Illinois took the top prize in a recent survey by Niche.com.

tirunelveli best tourist places

DenisTangneyJr/Getty Images

If you’re looking to move this year, you are not alone. Last year, a survey found that over a quarter of people either have specific plans to relocate or want to do so in the future. And according to data by the U.S. Census Bureau, 25.6 million Americans, or almost eight percent of the population, moved in 2023 , with many seeking better education and a more family-friendly environment.

If these are also important factors for you, consider relocating to Naperville, Illinois. This city of about 150,000, west of Chicago, was just named the best place to live in 2024 by Niche.com (it was also on our Best Places to Live in Illinois list, as recommended by real estate experts). The study takes into account overall livability criteria like crime rates, housing trends, employment statistics, school system, and access to amenities in over 220 cities across the nation.

“With outstanding quantitative and qualitative scores across many of the categories we use to evaluate cities, Naperville secured this year’s top spot for best cities to live in America for the first time ever after years on the rise,” Luke Skurman, CEO at Nich, told Travel+Leisure. Skurman added the city ranked first in the public schools and family-friendly places categories and was third in the housing category.

Naperville dates back to the 1800s, and its long history is reflected in the variety of architectural styles that define its cityscape. It sits on the banks of the DuPage River, and its scenic riverfront is one of the main attractions drawing residents and visitors alike. With multiple sports complexes, miles of hiking trails, and a couple of forest preserves, the city offers plenty of year-round outdoor recreation.

Because Naperville is just 35 miles west of Chicago, its residents also have access to the Windy City’s job market and economic opportunities, resulting in a median household income that is almost twice the nation’s average, according to Niche . However, unlike other cities with excellent public school systems and family amenities, housing prices have not reached stratospheric levels. Zillow data shows that the median home value in Naperville is $538,826. However, that number is ten percent higher than last year, so prices are on the rise.

Second on Niche’s list is The Woodlands in Texas. This community north of Houston came on top in the housing category and was recently highlighted as one of the most affordable places to retire in the South . The median home value here is $303,00 2, which is below the national average.

And the bronze medal goes to Cambridge, Massachusetts. This Boston suburb, which is home to several top-rated universities, including Harvard and MIT, ranked first in the Best Cities for Young Professionals category. However, with a median home price of $962,679, it received a low score in the housing category.

You can see the full ranking of Niche’s tenth annual report at niche.com .

Solar eclipse 2024 in Ohio: Best places to be dazzled by the sun April 8

Steve Stivers is president and CEO of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.

Ohio will be one of the few states to experience a total solar eclipse on April 8.

With a 124-mile-wide path of totality, Ohio is expecting an influx of tourism as people travel from all over the country to come witness this rare phenomenon.

Your safety: Do eclipse glasses expire? Are my eclipse glasses safe? Ohio doctors offer tips

A solar eclipse is a celestial event that occurs when the moon casts its shadow across the Earth as it travels between the Earth and the Sun. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon appears to totally obscure the Sun, blanketing the sky in complete darkness. The last appearance of a total solar eclipse in Ohio was in 1806, and the next total solar eclipse is not expected to visit the state until 2099.

What time is the total eclipse of the sun in Ohio?

This year, the total solar eclipse will be visible in Ohio from 3:08 p.m. to 3:19 p.m., with a partial solar eclipse beginning at 1:59 p.m.

Much of the state is expected to witness totality, with many cities preparing for a major tourism boom. Cleveland, Dayton, Toledo, Bowling Green and Akron are just a few cities inside the path of totality that have already began to witness the economic impacts of the total solar eclipse.

According to a  Columbus Dispatch article  from last June, experts say this eclipse’s economic impact on Ohio could exceed $100 million. When it was in the path of totality in 2017, South Carolina saw millions of new visitors, resulting in an estimated impact of $269 million.

Spectacular and dangerous. How to safely enjoy 2024 solar eclipse.

Solar eclipse 2024: How to watch the April 8 event and protect your eyes, kids and nerves

With travelers expected to spend money on hotels, food and dining, transportation, retail services and more, many businesses across northwest Ohio are preparing for a surplus of new customers. The state is anticipating a boom in tourism that will have substantial economic impacts across Ohio.

This spectacular event is a once-in-a-generation experience, so it is crucial to find the most optimal viewing location for this remarkable sensation. Many places within the path of totality are expecting large crowds, so make time to enjoy all that Ohio has to offer before, during and after the eclipse.

Great places to watch the solar eclipse in Ohio?

As cities prepare for the new tourists traveling to witness the total solar eclipse, many businesses are hosting events to allow for their customers to have the best viewing experience. See the list below to learn more some of the exciting events happening throughout the state for the eclipse.

The  Solar Eclipse Solar-Bration  at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium will provide eclipse viewing glasses and invites guests to enjoy the eclipse while learning about the science behind wildlife research.
