Tibet dying a ‘slow death’ under Chinese rule, says exiled leader

Head of Tibet’s government in exile addresses US Congress for the first time, says Tibetan language, culture and religion facing ‘unprecedented threat of eradication’.

Penpa Tsering, the president of the Central Tibetan Administration

Exiled Tibetan leaders and officials in the United States have condemned China’s “cruel” policies in Tibet, accusing Beijing of separating families in the Himalayan region, banning their language, and engaging in non-consensual DNA collection.

Addressing the US Congress for the first time, Penpa Tsering, the head of the India-based organisation known as Tibet’s government in exile, said on Tuesday that Tibet was dying a “slow death” under Chinese rule.

Us says china can spy with tiktok. it spies on world with google, china’s rich flee crackdowns for ‘asia’s switzerland’ singapore, china’s huge quarantine camps standing months after ‘zero covid’, russia, china creating world of ‘danger, disorder, division’: uk.

“We often get asked why we don’t hear about Tibet any more,” said Tsering, known as the Sikyong of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA).

He blamed that silence on China’s “Orwellian gridlock system, use of all means of artificial intelligence to surveil people, control the flow of information and lockdown of Tibet to the outside world”.

“Tibetan language, religion and culture are the bedrock of Tibetan identity … These are facing the unprecedented threat of eradication ,” he told the bipartisan Congressional-Executive Commission on China hearing via video link.

“If PRC [[People’s Republic of China] is not made to reverse or change its current policies, Tibet and Tibetans will definitely die a slow death,” Tsering added.

The hearing came as some Tibetan activists lament what they see as a fading focus on alleged abuses in Tibet amid growing concerns in Washington and other Western capitals about China’s expanding military, pressure on democratic Taiwan, and crackdowns in Hong Kong and on minority groups in China’s Xinjiang region.

A congressional source told the Reuters news agency that it was the first such address by a Sikyong to a congressional body, and it is likely to anger Beijing.

The Sikyong role was created in 2012 after the Dalai Lama, the Tibetans’ 87-year-old spiritual leader, relinquished political authority in favour of an organisation that could outlive him.

Beijing has accused the Dalai Lama of fomenting separatism in Tibet and it does not recognise the CTA, which represents about 100,000 exiled Tibetans living in about 30 countries including India, Nepal, Canada and the US.

China’s Embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment on the hearing.

China has ruled the remote western region of Tibet since 1951, after its military marched in and took control in what it calls a “peaceful liberation”. China denies wrongdoing there and says its intervention ended “backward feudal serfdom”.

Uzra Zeya , US under secretary of state for democracy and human rights, told the hearing that China continued to “wage a campaign of repression that seeks to forcibly Sinicize” the six million Tibetans in the country and eliminate Tibetan religious, cultural and linguistic heritage.

Recent reports on government-run boarding schools and involuntary mass DNA collection in Tibetan areas “shock the conscience,” said Zeya, who as special coordinator for Tibetan issues leads US support for Tibetans.

Beijing has refused to deal with her.

Republican Representative Chris Smith, who chairs the commission, said there was a global focus on Taiwan, Hong Kong and Xinjiang, but “we cannot take our eyes off the ongoing genocide being committed against Tibetan people”.

Actor and longtime Tibet activist Richard Gere told the hearing that Chinese policies in Tibet increasingly “match the definition of crimes against humanity”.

“For decades, as we know, the Chinese Communist Party’s ethnic policies have been largely predicated on containment, denial, destruction and assimilation,” said Gere, a longtime champion of Tibet who has testified in Congress several times.

The 73-year-old accused Beijing of “cruelty, collective violence and persecution” of the Tibetan people, whom he said were repressed by a “pervasive surveillance system”.

Gere called on Congress to pass legislation underscoring US support for the Tibetan people, as well as a report on Beijing’s efforts to influence the perceptions of Tibet and the Dalai Lama abroad.

Don't worry: your travel agency (we) will give you guidance in preparing all the items.

As far as personal security goes, Tibet is a safe place with a low crime rate. Even if you walk around Tibet alone in your free time, your personal security is not expected to be threatened.

When walking in the streets of Lhasa you will find lots of police stations , and armed policemen can be seen everywhere in the streets. They are normally on duty 24/7.

With an average elevation of 4,500 meters (15,000 feet) above sea level, probably your biggest concern is altitude sickness in Tibet.

4. Things Not to Do When Planning a Tibet Trip

  • Don't book your tour any later than 10 days before departure to ensure we have (your travel agency has) plenty of time to apply for Tibet permits.
  • Don't book flights before the Tibet permit is issued, especially during this COVID-19-affected period. You might find that a Tibet Permit is required to confirm a flight booking, but your permit cannot be obtained until 2–7 days before your tour! It is better to ask a travel agent (us) to organize your flight tickets as it is easy for them (us) to handle all these problems, as well as cancel flight tickets if there is any travel ban due to COVID-19, etc.
  • Don't plan your Tibet trip for March. Tibet will be closed to foreign travelers during the Tibetan New Year period, which is usually in February/March and is based on the Tibetan calendar. During this period, it is worth considering other Tibetan regions such as Qinghai , Sichuan , and Yunnan , which have many of the cultural and scenic attractions that Tibet does without access restrictions.
  • Don't arrange a tight schedule in Tibet to sure your tour arrangement is as flexible as possible. You may need more time to let your body get used to the high altitude. See How Long to Spend in Tibet
  • Don't make changes to your itinerary (such as pre-Lhasa city or travel destinations in Tibet) once your Tibet Entry Permit is issued, otherwise, you will need to apply for a new one! Please do tell your travel agency (us) in advance if you want to make any changes to your Tibet plan.

The weather in Tibet is largely affected by altitude . Therefore, even in the same month, the temperature in southern (low altitude) and northern (high altitude) Tibet can be very different.

Every season has its advantages and characteristics. Exploring Tibet in different months shows you different scenery and cultural activities for different travel experiences.

Spring (April to May) is best to enjoy less-crowded attractions and a favorable rate of hotels (except for the Labor Day holiday: May 1-5). The peach blossom in Nyingchi is really worth seeing.

Summer is best for seniors and kids because the air's oxygen content is higher during this period.   You can enjoy most of the sights in Tibet when nature is at its most vibrant and also experience rich festivals. Local people make their living by growing barley and raising yaks there every summer. You can take part in the work of local Tibetans . In the evening, you can cook and enjoy dinner with a local Tibetan family. While it's more crowded than other months, there are higher costs due to the higher demand for flights, trains, and hotels.

You can travel to every place in Tibet during autumn , which provides the year's best weather for hiking . The most popular trekking trails by far are the Everest Base Camp Trek and the Mount Kailash (Yatra) Trek — a famous pilgrimage route. It is also the best time to admire the breathtaking snow-capped Mount Everest when the sky is particularly blue, the air is clean and dry, and there are few clouds.

Winter is Tibetan people's leisure time and many of them choose to make a pilgrimage trip to Lhasa from their various Tibet regions. Small religious activities can be found in many corners of Lhasa. In winter, blue glaciers are an unusual and striking feature of Tibet, with ice cracks and bubbles all over the frozen lakes, the huge ice blocks appear to be a charming blue color. It is also a good time to enjoy the favorable rates of hotels. See  5-Day Tibet Winter Tour

See more on Best Times to Visit Tibet .

6. Budget for a Trip to Tibet

The budget depends on where, when, how many people, how many days, hotel class, private or group tour, transport, and other requirements you may have.

You could get the approximate price from our  8-Day Tibet Tour (based on 2 people for a private tour) for reference. The price of 8 days would be about USD 2200 per person, including private transfers in Tibet, meals, admission fees,  guiding, hotels, etc.

To make the most of your budget, you are suggested to book a few months in advance to enjoy some early booking discounts or travel with more than four people to share private tour costs.

If you have a holiday in winter, travel to Tibet in December or January to enjoy the special winter rates including discounts on hotels, airfares, and entrance tickets.

7. Tips for Traveling with Seniors and Children

  • Make sure any seniors and children in your group are healthy enough to visit Tibet by consulting a doctor. Seniors with cardiovascular diseases or chronic respiratory ailments are not suggested to travel to Tibet.
  • Stay in Lhasa for 2 days for acclimation before touring any wider in Tibet.
  • Traveling with a wheelchair is not convenient in Tibet , as most of the attractions are located on hillsides without a chairlift or elevator, which means those in wheelchairs will miss the Potala Palace and monasteries. But it is fine to visit places with flat roads in a wheelchair, such as Barkhor Street, Jokhang Temple, and Lake Yamdrok.
  • Children under 4 years old are not suggested to visit high-altitude regions in Tibet, such as Everest Base Camp (5,200 m), Mount Kailash (4,700–5,600 m), or any place over 4,500 m. Lhasa (3,800 m), Lake Yamdrok (4,000 m), and Nyingchi (3,100 m) are perfect choices for them.
  • Be sure your children can well express how they are feeling to identify symptoms of altitude sickness.
  • Bring some snacks for your kids , as the foods in Tibet will probably not be to their liking — most of the dishes have a heavy flavor and will be quite strange to them. However, if your children are adventurous eaters, this could work out well.
  • If you are a family with 2 adults and 1 kid , your family can simply sleep in one bed if there is enough space or ask for an extra bed or cot.
  • If your family has 2 adults and 2 children or more, it is better to book adjoining rooms (rooms are often connected by a door). This type of room is limited in availability and not provided in every hotel, please ask our travel advisor to choose hotels for you.

During our over 20 years of experience , we have organized Tibet tours for customers from 4 to 82 years old . Please do tell us about any special requests you have , and our professional travel advisor will solve any problems for you.

It is wise to get travel insurance when you travel to Tibet. Here is what you need to consider when selecting your policy:

1. It is better to get "cancellation for any reason" insurance in case of a sudden closure of Tibet (although this is not frequent, it could happen at any time). Booking with China Highlights, you enjoy free cancellation up to 22 days before departure for your Tibet tour or other China tours.

2. Check if it covers an emergency medical evacuation, which could help you quickly descend or leave Tibet if you suffer severe altitude sickness.

3. If you plan to trek in Tibet, check if your policy covers trekking in Tibet.

4. Check if your travel insurance includes medical expenses for your trip to Tibet in case you need medical services in a hospital there (due to altitude sickness).

5. Other typical air travel issues should be covered, for example, a snowstorm closing down your airport before you can board your flight to Tibet, or arriving only to find your luggage is on its way to another city…

Based on what we know from our previous customers, the most popular insurance companies are InsureMyTrip and World Nomads.

9. How to Get to Tibet? — Easiest from China

Broadly speaking, there are two ways you can enter Tibet: from China's cities or from Nepal , but the easiest way by far is from the China side.

Travel from China's cities

There are direct flights from China's major cities to Lhasa in Tibet, such as from Beijing , Shanghai , Chengdu , and Chongqing . The most frequent and reliable flights to Tibet are from Chengdu, with about eight flights per day.

Trains to Tibet depart from these cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou , Xi'an , Chongqing , Lanzhou , and Xining .

Xining is the best place to start the train journey, as it is the beginning point of the most beautiful section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway with the shortest train journey to Lhasa (20–22 hours), compared to around 30–50 hours for further departure points.

See more details on How to Get to Tibet .

Example: the Best Way to Travel to Tibet from the U.S.

1. Book a flight from a USA city to a China city: Beijing, Shanghai, etc.

2. Spend a couple of days in your China arrival city to get over jet lag.

3. Take a flight to Chengdu , which is the best city for connecting flights to Lhasa (almost all flights to Tibet stopover in Chengdu). You could happily stay a night in Chengdu — home to China's giant pandas — and spend a day sightseeing in the city before going to Tibet.

A wonderful panda volunteer keeper program experience would be worth a day there.

4. Take a morning flight from Chengdu to Lhasa (2½ hours) so that you can have plenty of time for acclimation in the afternoon before you sleep to avoid altitude sickness effects as much as possible.

On your return journey, you could experience the Qinghai-Tibet Railway from Lhasa to Xining with beautiful scenery along the way , and then take a flight from Xining to a large city in China for the flight home.

Traveling out of Tibet by train will help you successfully get train tickets. Lhasa-Xining train tickets are five times easier to buy than Xining-Lhasa tickets! This also means you can save a lot on the ticket booking fee.

Tips: Taking a flight into Tibet is better than a train because a good sleep in a hotel in Lhasa is much more helpful to altitude acclimation than spending a night on the train.

Most passengers find it more difficult to fall asleep on the train, and tiredness makes altitude sickness more uncomfortable.

Travel from the Nepal Side

There are two ways into Tibet from Nepal: by flight and by road .

You should first consider issues of a China visa and Tibet Entry Permit , no matter whether you'll go by flight or road. Procedures are different from traveling from a Chinese mainland city to Tibet.

Y ou must apply for a China visa and Tibet permits in Nepal via a travel agent . Any China visa issued in your resident country will be invalid for Tibet travel. You will need to stay in Kathmandu for at least 3 working days to wait for the visa and permit.

By road, you can travel from Kathmandu to Lhasa via the Gyirong border (possibly with a convenient side tour to Mount Everest).

For more, see How to Travel from Nepal to Tibet .

Chinese government treats diplomats to Tibet tour in run-up to rights review

Share

The Chinese government hosted a group of U.N. ambassadors who visited Tibet on an arranged tour before the international body conducts a review of Beijing’s human rights record in 2024, Tibetan experts on the region said.

Diplomats from authoritarian countries that are China’s closest allies – Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Belarus and Pakistan – visited the far-western region on Aug. 28-30, photos posted on the social media platform X, formerly called Twitter, show.

“All members in the group visiting Tibet belong to an authoritarian nation that is economically dependent on China to a large extent,” said Tenzin Dawa, director of Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy.

“And since the U.N. member states are set to publicly examine China’s human rights record in early 2024 as part of a review process at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, this visit arranged by the Chinese government is clearly aimed at portraying a Tibet where China believes Tibetans enjoy human rights and freedom,” she said.

The trip came amid growing criticism of China’s policies in Tibet, where authorities restrict Tibetans’ political activities and peaceful expression of cultural and religious identity. Tibetans frequently complain of discrimination and human rights abuses by Chinese authorities and policies they say are aimed at eradicating their national and cultural identity.

The diplomats visited the Jokhang Temple, Potala Palace, Sera Monastery and a secondary school in Lhasa, capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

“We appreciate the visit to the secondary school no. 8 in Lhasa, Tibet, #China,” tweeted Juan Antonio Quintanilla Roman, permanent representative of Cuba in Geneva, after the visit. “We confirm that education is a priority for the government There, more than a 1,000 students receive quality preparation in subjects such as science, art, language, while preserving Tibetan culture.”

The U.N.’s Human Rights Council will scrutinize China’s human rights records during the body’s fourth Universal Periodic Review of China in Geneva, Switzerland, in early 2024.

Cuba and Pakistan are current members of the 47-member council, but their terms expire at the end of this year. Venezuela, Nicaragua and Belarus are not members. Nevertheless, as close allies, Beijing expects the countries to support it in the face of likely accusations.

Tenzin Lekshey, spokesman for Central Tibetan Administration said the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, India, has repeatedly urged U.N. representatives and foreign journalists to visit Tibet on their own terms to see China’s repression firsthand.

“But the Chinese government organizes these carefully choreographed visits aimed at hiding repression in Tibet, so it has become very difficult to learn about the actual reality,” he told Radio Free Asia.

In May, U.N. human rights experts expressed concern that allegations of mandatory vocational training programs and labor transfer in the Tibet Autonomous Region could affect the human rights of Tibetans, similar to the situation with Uyghurs in Xinjiang, RFA reported .

The United States in August said it would impose visa sanctions against Chinese officials responsible for the forced assimilation of more than 1 million young Tibetan children into state-run boarding schools.

The coercive policies aimed to eliminate Tibet’s distinct linguistic, cultural, and religious traditions among younger generations of Tibetans, the U.S. said.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin rejected the move and said the sanctions were based on “fabricated lies on Tibet in disregard of the facts.”

When is the best time to visit Tibet?

Spring and summer are the best seasons to visit Tibet for the perfect weather, during which the weather in Tibet is warm enough to travel, yet neither too hot nor too cold. Also, you can have more chances to enjoy a clear view of the mountains in Tibet, especially when you visit Everest Base Camp.

Tibet winter, from November to mid-February, is the best time to visit Tibet for a cheaper price. In this low season of Tibetan tourism, the prices of Tibet flights and hotels are much cheaper than usual.

Summer is known as the rainy season in Tibet. But the rainfall is almost at night and will not have much impact on daytime sightseeing activities.

However, summer is the best time to experience Tibetan festival tours . Some popular Tibetan festivals, such as the Shoton Festival, the Saga Dawa Festival, and horse racing festivals are held in summertime (Late May to August).

Insider Tips: 1. Winter in Tibet is not as cold as you think. The average temperature of Lhasa in the daytime is around 18°C.

2. Pay attention to landslides or other geological disasters if you take a Sichuan Tibet overland tour in summer.

3. Please check the updated Tibetan Calendar for the exact dates of Tibetan festivals.

How to get to Tibet? which is the easiest way?

Visit tibet from the mainland of china.

Mainland China is the major gateway to enter Tibet. You can easily visit Tibet from the mainland of China by air, by train, or by land.

It is easy and convenient to take a flight to Tibet from most major cities in mainland China. Among all the entry cities, Chengdu offers the most frequent daily flights to Lhasa and Nyingchi.

The Qinghai-Tibet railway from Xining to Lhasa is the only railway to Tibet. Joining the train network in China at Xining, you can also take Tibet trains from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, and Lanzhou.

There are also four highways to Lhasa, namely Sichuan-Tibet highway (G318 and G317), Qinghai-Tibet highway (G109), Yunnan-Tibet highway (G214), and Xinjiang-Tibet highway (G219). You can enjoy a lifetime overland tour to Tibet through any of them as you like.

Accommodation and dining tips of Tibet visting

Accommodation in tibet.

The Tibet hotels are not as good as those in big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, etc. The best hotels mostly center in Lhasa, Shigatse, and Nyingchi. As you travel north or to the west of Tibet, like EBC and Mount Kailash, where you can stay are often the guesthouses or yak tents with a filthy pit toilet and no running water.

Shangri-La China Tour: Discovering the Magic of Tibet

dictature tour tibet

Shangri-La is a spiritual place. One where long ago, the Tibetans hailed from the towering Himalayan plateau, and settled northwest in Yunnan's rugged mountains. Through Songtsam's Shangri-La China tour, you’ll find snowy ranges that contain panoramic vistas, and ancient culture not too different from the mountain paradise described in James Hilton's ‘’Lost Horizon’’.

dictature tour tibet

Shangri-La represents mystical and harmonious valleys. An earthly paradise, one that is permanently happy as it stands tall, wholly isolated from the outside world. This ties in with the term ‘’Shambhala’’, which is used within old Tibetan scriptures. It describes another dimension of the planet which is difficult for ordinary people to reach. Although Shangri-La may feel out of reach, it’s actually much closer than you may believe. Shangri-La sits inside your heart and soul, and we at Songtsam are here to give you the perfect introduction in order to unleash it.

From breathtaking plateaus and valleys to the historical Buddhist monasteries and villages, your upcoming journey into Yunnan has been explicitly designed with spirituality in mind. In this article, we’re going to talk about the best moments of the Songtsam tour across Yunnan, and just how its unique design will hurl you into the beautiful world of Shangri-La.

The Natural Wonders Closest to Paradise, Holy and Majestic

There may only be seven official natural wonders of the world, but in Shangri-La, you’re sure to embark on many more breathtaking natural sights that will feed your soul with the energy it needs. From the glorious Meili Snow Mountain, to the remote small villages where the atmosphere soothes and the mystery stimulates, you won’t find any other place like the wonder that is Shangri-La.

Admire the sunrise hitting the peak of Snow-Capped Meili Snow Mountain

The Meili Snow Mountain — 21,000 ft above sea level, majestic, splendid, and one of the most sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism. Its 13 peaks stand firmly on the ground, and rise magnificently — referred to as the ‘’Prince’s 13 peaks’’. This fascinating existence accounts to be the highest Mountain among Yunnan.

Inside this mystery snow mountain, you’ll come across natural treasures like highland lakes, dense forests, unique vegetation, and wondrous wildlife.

On the 150-mile long mountain road, Tibetans embrace the method of ‘turning the mountain around’ in order to form pilgrimages. Through the mist at the foot of the mountain, they kowtow step by step. As they walk, they listen to the sacred mountain legend, one that echoes in the wind.

Perked just outside the window of Songtsam Lodge Meili, are the peaks of the giant mountain itself. Behind that is a secretly located mountain village that goes by the name of Gujiunon. At its inception, Gujiunon had five traditional families but has expanded with time.

Very few locals know the remote small mountain village. It came to light as a photographer, who goes by the name of Mr. Baima Duoji, who later founded Songtsam, searched the mountain as he looked for a perfect spot to shoot the wondrous mountain itself. As he walked around, he came across this village. He says that inside, you’re able to see the golden, glistening mountains as they bask in the sunshine.

Visiting the Meili Snow Mountain is one of the best things to do in Tibet . In the Songtsam Lodge Meili, you’ll be far from any noise that comes with a busy city. In this legendary landscape of sacred summits, you can relax, roast the fire, drink tea, and get lost as you watch the clouds of Meili Snow Mountain pass by.

Dive Into the Three Parallel Rivers

Inside the Hengduan Mountains, three grand rivers: the Salween, Yangtze, and Mekong Rivers flow parallel through incredible snow peaks that measure almost an unbelievable 20,000 ft high in parts.

The Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan encompass a majestic land hemmed in by the mighty. The quiet valleys based within the mountains are rugged landscapes that are truly rich in biodiversity. You can truly find peace within this land. The Three Parallel Rivers are also home to various ethnic groups. It’s an inhabitant to peaceful people that have not only preserved the area for countless generations, but have nurtured Yunnan to grow into such beauty.

When you combine stays at different Songtsam properties, you can embark on a circuit tour that takes you right into the heart of the Three Parallel Rivers. It gives you the freedom you need to explore the magical land. Many often state that this is a truly incredible thing to do in Shangri-La.

Bask in Unforgettable Experiences and the Comfort of Your Songtsam Shangri-La Stay

The meaning of the word Shangri-La can refer to many things. You can choose to look at it as a remote, beautiful, imaginary place where life approaches complete and utter perfection. Or maybe view it as a utopia? One that gives you the ideal hideaway to bask in the wonder of beauty in nature.

Whether you choose to set foot on a journey to the magnificent Meili Snow Mountain, take a dive into the Three Parallel Rivers, or you would just love to get lost in a remote village, interact with the locals, and learn the tradition of the Shangri-La lifestyle, this place is like nothing you have ever seen before.

Throughout your holistic journey into wellness, you will be staying in Tibetan-style boutique hotels and lodges. Songtsam properties all feature exquisite levels of amenities, specifically chosen antique furniture and art collections, and a class of service that one can only dream of when in such a remote place. Combine stays at the five different Songtsam properties to receive a warm embrace on our circuit tour that will take you to the heart of every location mentioned, including the highly anticipated Three Parallel Rivers.

Songtsam has built a series of hotels and lodges in very carefully selected locations, enabling all of our guests to experience the vast cultures and landscapes. Combined, it will allow our guests to bask in a truly magical experience.

The Old Town of Lijiang

The Old Town of Lijiang boasts history that dates back to more than 1000 years. It was once a confluence for trade along the ‘’Ancient Tea Horse Caravan Trail’’. Although this town is now famous for a lively nightlife scene in today’s world, many people still enjoy the combination of modern entertainment and architecture that dates back throughout the centuries. However, with this in mind, it’s the quieter and tourist-free part of the town that truly speaks the local’s spirit.

Songtsam Linka Lijiang perfectly integrates the Naxi village courtyard characteristics and the central plains official architecture. Instead of the touristic and commercialized old town of Lijiang, the Songtsam retreat sits at a nearby small Naxi-ethnic village named Ciman, where the traditional way of living still thrives.

Surrounded by pinewoods and a pear garden, Songtsam Linka Lijiang offers spectacular views of the old town and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The hotel’s design is grand in appearance and the architecture style is a combination of Naxi-Dongba, Chinese-Tang style. The property also exhibits a unique combination of Chinese and Tibetan-influenced art.

Stop By the Remote Mountain Villages

Inside the incredible, remote mountain villages, you’ll find the real Shangri-La and Tibetan culture.

The remote Tibetan Mountain villages are far for most modern people. However, it’s the only place you can really find the beauty, and of course, long-established Tibetans. Traditionally, getting to the remote villages hidden in the mountains of Yunnan has been incredibly hard. One must overcome difficult accommodation, transportation, and may experience some bumps along the way.

Now, Songtsam established a route that goes into the mountains so you can truly embark upon the ultimate adventure. Upon arrival, you’ll be sure to meet villagers who reside in the mountains, and in turn, the villages get the chance to meet people from all over the world. It’s an experience for every single person involved.

With more than 20 minorities who each have their own culture, clothing, traditions, and sometimes even language — Yunnan’s spiritual Shangri-la will be a mind-blowing experience. Especially when you spend several hours with the locals sharing food, dancing traditional dances, and even wearing their traditional clothes!

The Most Beautiful Hiking Trails

“Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go.” - T.S. Eliot.

Suppose you’re looking for that hike, the one that leaves you breathless as you climb the summit of the mountain. That one hike with awe-inspiring views, the one that has you saying WOW repeatedly as you step one foot after another — then Shangri-La is about to satisfy you in ways you could have never dreamed.

Tiger Leaping Gorge

Let’s start with Tiger Leaping Gorge, voted one of the very best hiking routes in the entire world.

Situated 37 miles north of Lijiang city, Tiger Leaping Gorge sits in the middle of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and the Haba Snow Mountain. Its beauty is preserved as the trail is not publicly accessible unless accompanied by a Songtsam experienced and authorized guide.

The Tiger Leaping Gorge is a trail that divides naturally into three sections. They represent the Upper Gorge, Middle Gorge, and Lower Gorge. This first section, which is the steepest of the whole journey, is referred to as the flowing Yangtze River's mouth. Right in the river’s mouth, sits a large rock positioned at the gorge’s narrowest section, which is only 98 ft wide. Ancient legends state that Tigers used the rock as a stepping stone to leap from one side of the gorge to the other, hence the name — Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Throughout this hiking trail, you’ll embark on a journey through only the most remote villages. You will also catch a glimpse of their local architecture, and have a picnic amid nature to top of the already fantastic experience.

White Horse Snow Mountain , Or, the Baima Snow Mountain

The White Horse Snow Mountain, often referred to as the Baima Snow Mountain, graces us with a tall and majestic landscape. They stand subdivided into mountains, canyons, broad valleys, river valleys, small plains, frozen glacial landforms, and gravity-weathered landforms.

A hiking trip is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the incredible geographic diversity and the wonderful world of the wildlife of Shangri-La. Throughout your journey, you’ll find quick and varied changes in altitude. This means that one is able to transport from cold mountains crystalized with snow, to warm and bright flower-filled valleys. All of this happens within just a couple of hours, which means you get the opportunity to experience four seasons in one day.

The eye-opening biodiversity is the highlight of this route, but there’s plenty more to see.

The Holy Land of Shangri-La

Inside the wonder that is Shangri-La, you’ll find a culture that dates back centuries, and various religions that flow in perfect harmony with one another. This beautiful piece of land once flourished in faith. Long ago, you were able to find Christians, Muslims, Chinese Buddhism, and Tibetan Buddhism prevail together, without any interference. In today’s world, Tibetan Buddhism is the dominant religion in Shangri-La, as it seems that people are constantly amazed by their devotion and practice.

“ By reaching the sky over the snow mountains

Practise the search for happiness ”

-translated lyrics from “Gangchenpa” by Dolma Kyap

Traditional poems and songs of Tibetan culture all include the various snow-capped mountains. It sits in a special place in their heart as the mountains symbolize purity and authority. You can find this symbol in artistic activities like the Thangka, mural painting, and architectural painting. The holy land of Shangri-la revolves around the Tibetans’ religious admiration for the natural beauty of the snow-capped mountains. So much so, the mountains have become the objects of people’s heartfelt wishes and prayers for protection. You may even spot pilgrims muttering to the towering snow-capped mountains, right in front of them.

The DongZhuLin Monastery

Set foot into the Dong Zhu Lin Monastery, the spiritual holy land of local Tibetans. This is the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in western Yunnan. It contains the methods practiced by the Shambhala and symbolizes purity and innocence.

Dong Zhu Lin Monastery sits on the Yunnan-Tibet Highway in Benzilan Township. It’s around 50 miles northwest of Deqin County, and more than 12 miles southeast of Benzilan.

The temple, assembled in the early Qing Dynasty, lies 10,000 ft above sea level. The Dong Zhu Lin is almost 350 years old and is the second-largest monastery in all of Yunnan.

Similar to other monasteries, the Gedong Festival also takes place in the Dong Zhu Lin Monastery.

The Gedong Festival is essential in Tibetan monasteries. Often, it’s also referred to as the ‘"God Jumping Festival.” According to the Tibetan calendar, each monastery has different dates for the Winter Festival. The Winter Festival of Gedan DongZhulin Temple is held on August 28th and 29th in the Tibetan calendar each year.

The Tibetan year is composed of 12 or 13 lunar months. Each calendar begins and ends with a new moon. Every two to three years, a thirteenth month is added onto the calendar. This happens so that an average Tibetan year is equal to the solar year. In the Tibetan calendar, certain dates and months have unique significance for Buddhist practices.

A True to Life Tibetan Museum in the Songtsam Lodge Shangri-la

If art pleases your soul, then prepare to feel a whole lot of goodness when you enter the Songtsam lodge Shangri-la. Although not a literal museum, it is filled with traditional art pieces and antiques. Mr. Baima Duoji, the founder of Songtsam, collected a batch of Tibetan paintings, Buddha statues, carpets, and put them to good use.

In 2001, Mr. Baima returned to his hometown and embarked upon a complete transformation of his ancestral home, based next to Songzanlin Monastery. There, he built the very first Songtsam Hotel. This hotel consists of an unassuming Tibetan-style civil-timbered small building and two courtyards. In the past 20 years, the hotel has undergone four renovations to continuously improve and upgrade its quality based on traditional Tibetan architecture.

When you pass through the rustic gate, beautifully decorated courtyard, and walk into your hotel room, you’ll come across Tibetan-style ancient furniture, traditional Tibetan carpets, Buddha statues, and old Thangkas Paintings everywhere.

Authentic, Traditional Dishes to Taste

It turns out that magnificent monasteries, quaint villages, prayer halls of monks chanting, jaw-dropping views of the highest mountains this world has to offer, and incredibly welcoming people that make you feel at home aren’t the only things that Tibet has to offer.

Authentic Tibetan dishes and beverages are just like Tibetan people and their culture; they all have a very distinct character. In this magical land, experiencing Tibetan food is often the highlight of one's trip. It has a unique, nomadic character, and that’s precisely what makes it so unique.

All Locally-Sourced Food

The unique soil and climatic conditions in Shangri-La have opened doors for people to form a more natural eating habit.

In Songtsam Lodge Tacheng, the ingredients come from the hotel’s organic vegetable garden and surrounding villages. They use simple cooking to preserve the taste of only the freshest ingredients to the maximum.

The miraculous nature within the surrounding forest and the biodiversity it provides is truly a unique delicacy of the mountains and their wild animals. The fields thrive throughout all four seasons, and semi-domesticated wild boars feed on wild fruits in the area, creating the best raw materials for ham.

In addition to this, you can find rainbow trout, which are both truly indispensable delicacies when laid out on the table.

The Naxi villagers follow the tradition of rice-bean and rice-wheat rotation. The rice and beans are extraordinarily fragrant, coupled with the excellent water quality of Tacheng, the bait, and tofu made are especially sweet.

Refreshing Beverages

Tacheng also has beautiful vineyards , and produces ice wine. The grapes grow until they are beaten by autumn frost at the end of every single year. Brewers tend to harvest the grapes when their sugar content is abundant, using them to make a delicious beverage known as ‘’Tacheng Ice Wine’’.

As the Cizhong villagers believe in Catholicism, they still retain the tradition of making "rose honey" red wine. This wine has high tannin content and is slightly sour within its first year. By now, the locals have learned to add a little sugar when drinking it - this gives it a mouth-wateringly rich taste.

Good-Night Milk

In addition to the many outstanding vineyards, Songtsam Linka Lijiang also offers a beverage that goes by the name of ‘’Good-Night Milk’’. It’s an opportunity to taste something extraordinary as this glass of milk comes from the cows raised in the village of Ciman, where the hotel is based.

The farmer wakes up every morning, milks the cows, heats the milk to sterilize, and sends it directly to the hotel on a horse. As production is created and sent out on the very same day, the milk is fresh, rich, and fragrant.

After its attention-grabbing appearance at the Singapore Airshow, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China continues its promotional tour of Southeast Asia featuring the C919, alongside COMAC's ARJ21 regional jet. The aircraft made their second appearance at the Vietnam Airshow this week.

The C919, poised to compete in the same operational segment as the Boeing BA B737 MAX and Airbus A320, hopes to attract new airline customers as the duopoly contends with quality issues , supply chain bottlenecks , and other production challenges.

COMAC's intensive six-country tour includes further stops in Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Indonesia over the next two weeks, aiming for COMAC’s market expansion beyond China.

C919 Branching Out Beyond China

The C919 has secured over 1,000 orders from Chinese carriers and lessors. Though it is currently only certified by China's aviation authority, COMAC plans to promote the C919 globally and seek certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency this year.

Since the program launch, COMAC has produced four C919 jets, all flying for China Eastern Airlines. The planes service the airline’s major domestic routes and have transported over 130,000 passengers. The first C919, registered as B-919A and operated by China Eastern, was a static display at the Singapore Airshow, showcasing the aircraft’s cabin.

COMAC announced a new order of 40 C919s in Singapore, notably from Tibet Airlines.

The ARJ21 has been in commercial service since June 2016, with 127 aircraft delivered and over 11 million passengers transported. TransNusa operates two ARJ21s in Indonesia, connecting Jakarta with other cities and safely carrying over 100,000 passengers.

COMAC projects a significant rise in the Asia-Pacific demand for passenger jets, estimating an increase from 3,314 to 9,701 aircraft over the next twenty years. The company is proactively preparing to meet this growing demand.

Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook 2023 predicts annual fleet growth of 6.9% in Southeast Asia, forecasting delivery of almost 4,300 airplanes over the next two decades.

Rising Asia Pacific Airline Demand Sparks Interest In C919

Two Chinese air-service companies signed orders for 40 units of C919 and 16 units of ARJ21 aircraft at the Singapore Airshow, which kicked off on February 20. The Tibet Airlines and the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (COMAC) finalized an order for 40 units of the C919 plateau variant and 10 units of the ARJ21 plateau variant. Members of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines were optimistic about the future of air travel in the region during the 67th Assembly of Presidents , held in Singapore last November. Despite the challenging economic conditions marked by inflation and strong monetary policies, AAPA's airlines have experienced a resurgence in air travel demand.

The number of international air passengers in the Asia Pacific region climbed to 79% of the levels seen before the pandemic in September of last year. The region trails slightly behind others because of slower border reopening post-COVID. Nonetheless, the appetite for air travel is strong. Airlines reported a 171% surge in international passenger traffic in the first nine months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

The growth in available seat kilometers, a measure of seat capacity, has been modest due to supply chain limitations. The airlines recorded a 130% increase in the initial nine months of 2023. However, airline load factors, a measure of how full aircraft fly, had rebounded to pre-pandemic levels. High demand for air travel within the region and capacity constraints kept airfares high, but this did not discourage bookings. Despite global economic pressures, airline leaders at the event noted a notable consumer shift from purchasing goods to spending on services, including air travel.

China, which previously represented 20% of the region's international traffic, was operating at just 54% of its 2019 traffic levels as of September 2023. However, the recovery rate for the Asia Pacific region, excluding China, was significantly higher at 87% of pre-COVID levels. With Chinese travelers returning, airlines predict substantial growth for regional and global tourism sectors.

As Reuters reported , Subhas Menon, director general of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines, said during the Singapore Airshow that airlines in the region were receptive, if cautious, about COMAC as a third aircraft option.

“I think people will take a second look because of all these delivery problems that Airbus and Boeing are having, but we have to be realistic because the C919 has not been certified by certain authorities, so the call to action is limited,” he said.

Airbus And Boeing Have A Vast Lead To Lose

The substantial order books of Airbus and Boeing combined dwarf those of COMAC. However, speaking to the media on the sidelines of the Singapore Air Show last week, Airbus commercial aircraft chief executive acknowledged the importance of the Chinese contender, as the Straits Times reported . “We fundamentally consider COMAC as a competitor in the future,” he said, with the caveat the aircraft will not “rock the boat in particular.”

“We certainly don’t want to stick our head in the sand,” Scherer added. “The cake is growing sufficiently for COMAC to want to compete.”

Gaining aircraft certification for the C919 outside of China might be a drawn-out process. However, Boeing needs time to address its safety management system and persuade the FAA that it can raise the 737 MAX production rate. Airbus has supply chain issues to resolve, which may also take time.

Airbus and Boeing claimed orders and commitments for larger jets at the Singapore Airshow. Vietjet Air signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Airbus to buy 20 A330-900 widebodies. Taiwan’s STARLUX Airlines signed a firm order for five advanced A350F freighters and three additional A330neo widebody aircraft.

Boeing announced an order from Thai Airways for 45 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners at the Singapore Airshow, and Royal Brunei Airlines ordered four 787-9 Dreamliners.

COMAC’s larger jet C929 program is in the design stage and is still a far-off prospect. But, there is world enough, and time.

In the center of the monastery is a courtyard that was used as a stage for religious dances.

In the main hall of Tashilumpo Monastery, we can hear monks chanting mystical chants. We will visit this dark and atmospheric chamber with many side altars, as well as the characteristic red building called Jamkhang Chenmo, which houses a giant statue of Maitreya – the future Buddha. The statue was built in 1914 by the ninth Panchen Lama.
