The Complete Guide to Disney World Ticket Prices

disney world wide tour

David Roark , Disney

When Walt Disney World first opened in 1971, it included the single theme park, the Magic Kingdom. Today, the Florida mega-resort, located near Orlando, offers four theme parks and two water parks (along with a slew of hotels; two shopping, dining, and entertainment districts; and many other diversions). Through the years, the prices of Disney’s park passes—along with the variety of ticket options to access the many parks—have grown exponentially.

The bad news is that the cost for a one-day, one-park ticket for ages 10 and older has skyrocketed to as high as $159. Fortunately, there are ways to bring the price of park passes down—substantially in some cases—which we will explore in our guide below. It’s important to understand how Disney World's ticket program works so that you can make informed purchasing decisions and get the best value for your ticket.

Note that Walt Disney World is open 365 days a year. All of the theme parks are open every day (although operating hours vary according to the season ), while the water parks typically take a winter break in the off-season.

How Much Are Tickets to Disney World?

The prices for Disney World theme park tickets used to be uniform. But starting in 2016, the resort adopted a variable pricing model. It’s similar to airlines and hotels, which charge more, based on demand, during peak seasons. The practice is also known as “surge pricing.” The prices listed in the chart above represent the lowest possible costs at the least busy times of the year.

Disney World offers two ticket categories according to age level: One is for ages 10 and older; the other is for ages 3 to 9. Admission is free for children under the age of 3. Read on to learn about the types of passes and what is/is not included.

1 Park Per Day

The standard, most basic ticket, 1 Park Per Day is self-explanatory. The ticket allows a user to visit one of Disney World’s four theme parks in a single day. They are available in denominations of one day up to 10 days. The four parks are Magic Kingdom , Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios , and Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

The more days you purchase, the lower the cost per day. Significant savings don’t kick in until five days or more. For example, the lowest price for a one-day ticket is $109. But the per-day price drops to $88 for a five-day ticket. The savings are even better for a 10-day ticket, with a per-day price of only $52.

Be aware that once you choose the first day of any multi-day ticket, you will have a limited amount of time to use or lose your tickets. You do not, however, have to visit the parks on consecutive days. For example, for a five-day pass, you have eight days from the first day of your ticket from which to choose the five days you will visit the parks. (Years ago, multi-day Disney World tickets did not expire.) Note also that passes are non-transferable, so be sure that each member of your party has his or her own ticket.

Water Park and Sports Option

For about $70 more, you could upgrade your 1 Park Per Day ticket and get a Water Park and Sports Option ticket. In addition to being able to visit one theme park per day, you could also visit Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park , Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park, the NBA Experience at Disney Springs, ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, the 9-hole Disney's Oak Trail Golf Course (which also offers a FootGolf experience), and Disney’s two mini-golf courses. The number of visits to these additional attractions is based on the number of days purchased for the 1 Park Per Day ticket. For example, a four-day ticket includes four visits, while a six-day ticket would include six visits.

Park Hopper Option

With the Park Hopper Option, you could visit multiple parks each day. For instance, you could go to Disney's Animal Kingdom in the early morning (when more animals are likely to be visible), the Magic Kingdom in the middle of the day, and cap off the evening with Fantasmic! at  Disney's Hollywood Studios .

If you are planning to spend one or two days at Disney World, the Park Hopper Option would make sense. It would allow you to visit all four parks in two days for as low as $288, or $72 per park. If you started early in the morning and stayed until the last park closed each day, you'd be getting an okay deal (and tired feet).

Park Hopper Plus Option

Park Hopper Plus tickets are almost identical to Water Park and Sports Option tickets in that they include visits to the same water parks and sports attractions. The difference is that they also allow park hopping among the theme parks.

If you're only going to be here for one or two days, we do not recommend this option. Even the most proficient multitasker would find it challenging to visit multiple theme parks plus water parks or other attractions in such a short amount of time.

Discount Pricing

  • Check out authorized third-party ticket sellers, such as Undercover Tourist , that offer Disney World tickets at modest discounts.
  • Disney World offers discounted tickets for Florida residents, which are available on its website .
  • While Disney never discounts its theme park tickets, it does offer limited-time package deals that bundle hotel accommodations and tickets. You can find these deals and other offers on the resort’s deals and discounts page .
  • Disney World offers special discounts for military members and their families . It is worth checking these out as they can offer substantial savings.

Plan Your Visit

From when to visit to making ride reservations, here's how to plan your trip to Walt Disney World to save money and get the most out of your ticket.

Best Time to Visit

It goes without saying that the busier the parks, the longer the waits for rides and attractions. You may not be able to experience as much, but ironically, your passes will cost more during peak tourist season. One way to save on tickets would be to plan your visit during the less-trafficked times of year, such as late August or September. In addition to saving money, you'll enjoy less crowded parks and get considerably more value.

As a bonus, hotels, airfare, and other costs are likely to be lower than during peak-visitation times. The busiest time of year, with the highest ticket costs, is the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

Do the Math for Water Park and Sports Option and Park Hopper Plus Tickets

Make sure that you would visit enough of the water parks and sports attractions to justify the additional cost of a Water Park and Sports Option ticket. You would certainly get a great value if you went to the water parks or attractions every day of your visit—but if you're only planning to go to one water park, the extra cost would not be worth it. Instead, purchase an à la carte ticket to visit one of the water parks for $64 and be ahead of the game.

Meanwhile, the difference in cost between the Park Hopper and the Park Hopper Plus tickets is generally only about $20. That makes the Park Hopper Plus Option a good value for visitors planning to visit even one of the water parks.

Link Your Tickets

Regardless of the tickets you end up purchasing, you are going to want to link them to what the resort calls a “My Disney Experience” account so that you will be able to use Disney’s services and plan your trip. There is both an online website and a mobile phone app that you can use in advance of your visit and while you are at the resort. It can be confusing, but it's important to understand the different elements of Disney World's trip planning resources, including  Disney Genie, Lightning Lane, MagicBands, and My Disney Experience .

Buy Your Tickets in Advance

You should purchase your tickets online . That way you can do advance planning, save money, and save time at the parks. You’ll pay $20 less per ticket when you buy three-day or longer tickets online rather than at the parks’ ticket booths.

No, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is not the most expensive theme park in Central Florida. Its website lists non-discounted tickets at $139.99, tying in price with sister park SeaWorld Orlando. Also, like SeaWorld, Busch Gardens’ website regularly offers discounts.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is more than 80 miles from Orlando, but the park operates a free shuttle to and from Orlando for ticketed guests.

Walt Disney World Unveils 2024 Experiences: Expect Droids

Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift

April 5th, 2024 at 1:53 PM EDT

Disney has released a new lineup of experiences at its flagship resort that could give anxious visitors, and rival competitors, a taste of its priorities as it plans to double its parks investment over the next decade.

Jesse Chase-Lubitz

Walt Disney World Resort in Florida is introducing a range of attractions and experiences for visitors in 2024 as part of its plan to double its investment in its theme parks to $60 billion over the next decade.

“It’s probably the largest expansion ever at Magic Kingdom,” Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World site portfolio executive, said this week.

Disney has been facing pressure from some fans who feel the 10-year framework is vague and unwieldy, especially compared to NBCUniversal’s plan to open its third park in 2025.

The most recent release of new experiences and activities, which features quite a lot of robots, could give anxious visitors an idea of what’s to come. Other theme park and attractions operators will be looking for clues and signals in what the travel experiences giant does next.

Droids on parade

The company launched intergalactic tours based on the “Star Wars” saga, and starting on Friday, BD-X “droids” will make appearances at the Disneyland resort in California through at least early June.

The child-sized, semi-autonomous droids, which are partly controlled by remote controls, have an uncanny human-like quality . They stumble when pushed and express emotion with their antennas, according to video demonstrations. They seem like they are communicating with humans, a leap forward from humans in costumes.

Expanding Disney’s parks

Beginning in late summer, the Magic Kingdom in the flagship Disney World Florida resort will feature a Bayou Adventure inspired by the movie, Princess and the Frog. The journey includes life-like automatons who can talk, wave and sing – something not yet seen in Florida.

This comes after Disney has already expanded EPCOT with a new water-based exploration trail based on the film “Moana” and new adventures from “Encanto.”

Media outlets who attended Disney’s tour of new projects this week also reported that there could be a new area based on the “Avatar” movies at Disneyland, but that is still just in the sketching stages and, if finalized, would require zoning approval by the city of Anaheim.

Warrior Games

Sports fans will get to see the Department of Defense Warrior Games, a sporting event to honor U.S. veterans, return to the Disney World ESPN complex this summer. The games are open to public participation.

A New Place to Stay

Finally, Disney announced additional rustic cabins for those looking for a place to stay called Fort Wilderness Resorts, starting July 1.

Star Tours - The Adventures Continue poster

Starting April 5, 2024, Disney Parks fans at Walt Disney World , Disneyland Resort, and Disneyland Paris can experience new characters and adventures on the popular Star Tours attraction. Those who choose to ride the Star Wars -themed motion simulator ride will have the chance to encounter destinations and characters from popular Disney+ series like Ahsoka , The Mandalorian , and Andor .

The new additions to the attraction bring the total number of potential storylines that riders can get to 250. During the attraction, guests may experience an urgent message from Ahsoka Tano, Dan Djarin and Grogu, or Cassian Andor, among other plot lines like visiting the planet Seatos from the Ahsoka series .

History of Upgrades on Star Tours

When Star Tours opened at Disneyland Park in 1987, it was a groundbreaking attraction where groups of 40 people could virtually travel to the Moon of Endor and more in a galaxy far, far away. The popular ride was later opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (then Disney-MGM Studios) and Tokyo Disneyland in 1989, and at Disneyland Paris in 1992.

In 2011, the attraction was completely overhauled to add multiple storylines that would be put together at random. Then as new movies like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker debuted, the ride offered more than 100 different storyline combinations.

When Star Wars : Galaxy’s Edge opened at Disneyland Park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2019, Star Tours got another sequence that took riders to Batuu, the planet that Galaxy’s Edge is themed around.

WWE WrestleMania 40 Results As Jey Uso Defeats Jimmy Uso

Wwe wrestlemania 40 results as jade cargill arrives and destroys, wwe wrestlemania 40 results as sami zayn shocks gunther wins ic title.

These updates are part of the overall appeal to Star Tours for many. The fact that you can ride multiple times over your vacation to the theme parks and never get the same story combination makes for great re-rideability.

Star Wars Season of the Force

For Star Wars fans going to the Disneyland Resort to ride Star Tours, from April 5 through June 2, you can also experience Season of the Force. This Disneyland-specific activation will bring even more Star Wars experiences to the park.

One of the biggest ways to celebrate Season of the Force is to watch Fire of the Rising Moons inside Galaxy’s Edge. This special event only happens on nights when Disneyland Park has fireworks at night at the front of the park.

Galaxy’s Edge will be an alternative viewing spot to the traditional viewing areas around Main Street, U.S.A., complete with a Star Wars -themed score from various John Williams pieces. The show is best viewed from Black Spire Spaceport, the TIE Echelon docking platform, and the speeder garage.

Another Star Wars -themed attraction is returning to Tomorrowland, Hyperspace Mountain, a galactic-themed overlay of the fan-favorite ride.

On select nights from April 16 through May 9, Star Wars Nite will take place. This separately ticketed event at Disneyland Park includes themed food and beverage options, a fan costume parade, character meet and greets, and more.

Disney allowed to pause federal lawsuit against DeSantis as part of settlement

  • Associated Press

ORLANDO — An appellate court on Monday granted Disney’s request for a two-month pause in a federal lawsuit against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and his appointees to Walt Disney World’s governing district after the two sides  reached a settlement  on separate litigation in state court.

Disney’s request Friday to the federal appellate court was motivated by last month’s settlement deal involving two Florida lawsuits between Disney and the DeSantis-appointed Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. After DeSantis took over the theme park’s governing board, the company and the district began fighting in state court over how Disney World will be developed in the future.

As part of the settlement, Disney agreed to pause the separate federal lawsuit, which is being appealed, pending negotiations on a new development agreement with the DeSantis appointees. The district provides municipal services such as firefighting, planning and mosquito control, among other things, and was controlled by Disney supporters for most of its five decades until the DeSantis appointees took it over last year.

Disney had a deadline of next week to file an opening brief in its appeal to the federal 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, but that deadline is now set for mid-June.

The settlement deal halted almost two years of litigation that was sparked by DeSantis’ takeover of the district from Disney supporters following the company’s opposition to Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Act, which critics called the  Don’t Say Gay law.

The 2022 law banned classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades and was championed by the Republican governor, who used Disney as a punching bag in speeches while running for president earlier this year. He has since dropped out of the race.

As punishment for Disney’s opposition to the controversial law, DeSantis took over the governing district through legislation passed by the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature and appointed a new board of supervisors. Disney sued DeSantis and his appointees, claiming the company’s free speech rights were violated for speaking out against the legislation. A federal judge  dismissed that lawsuit  in January, but Disney appealed.

Before it was filled with DeSantis appointees early last year, the board — then composed of Disney supporters — agreed to give Disney control of Disney World’s design and construction. The new DeSantis appointees  claimed the “eleventh-hour deals” neutered their powers , and the district sued the company in state court in Orlando to have the contracts voided.

Disney filed counterclaims and asked the state court to declare the agreements valid and enforceable.

Under the settlement, the development agreement and covenants giving Disney design and construction control would be considered null and void, and the new board agreed to operate under a master plan that had been in effect before DeSantis took over the district.

Walt Disney World bear in tree

One day after Bob Iger faced questions about Disney ‘s competitive position vs. Universal in the Orlando theme park game, there came more information today about a significant expansion of Walt Disney World.

Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World site portfolio executive, said the company’s Orlando resort is undergoing “probably the largest expansion ever at Magic Kingdom,” according to a piece by CNN .

Hundgen said the expansion would be on par, size-wise, with the 14-acre Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge.

Asked for specifics on expansion plans at the company’s resorts yesterday, Iger refused to be pinned down.

“You know, we have a lot of projects in development,” he said. “Many of them are known to us. But we disclose these at a cadence and when we really feel we’re ready, and we have something more tangible to show people.”

The odd thing about Iger’s reticence is that Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Josh D’Amaro has been offering potential examples for at least two years.

The biggest round of applause at the 2022 D23 Expo fan event came for a potential  Coco -themed land, which could also include elements from  Encanto . He even shared concept art of what he called Beyond Big Thunder Mountain at  Walt Disney World :  Encanto , which would incorporate the films into the railroad ride. See below.

disney world wide tour

At last year’s D23 event Bruce Vaughn, Chief Creative Officer at Walt Disney Imagineering, also called he future expansion plans for Magic Kingdom in Florida the largest ever for the park and confirmed the scale would be along the lines of Galaxy’s Edge.

So why is Iger being so vague? The question is a familiar one to Disney. It may be D’Amaro has a big unveiling planned this this year’s D23 event , which takes place August 8-11. There may be another reason, as well.

“With DisneylandForward and more flexibility within our existing properties, new lands and adventures like those underway at Tokyo DisneySea and Shanghai Disneyland could inspire new experiences here,” reads the copy on DisneylandForward.com.

Examples given on the site include  Frozen  land and the  Tangled  and  Peter Pan  attractions for the original park and  Zootopia ,  Tron  and  Toy Story  elements for Disney’s California Adventure. These are just examples, however. Disney brass, including Potrock in his responses to Anaheim residents, have not committed to any of them.

Echoing the Anaheim request for “flexibility,” Iger said it would be “silly” to lock in all of that $60 billion to specific projects now, because they want to be able to build out around IP the market tells them it wants more of.

It’s worth pointing out that Disney is talking about building out one new land here. Add that the the coming addition of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at WDW and you have two new lands. Universal’s in-the-works Epic Universe , is a whole new park due to debut in 2025. It will have five so-called “worlds,” including a new Wizarding World of Harry Potter and a new Super Nintendo World, both of which are prime drivers at Universal Studios Hollywood. Brian Roberts, CEO of NBCUniversal parent Comcast in January called Epic Universe the company’s most ambitious park yet.

Iger did offer that 70% of the pledged $60 billion investment will be put into new attractions and 30% will be for technology and maintenance to make these expansions happen.

Deadline has reached out to WDW for comment and this story will be updated when one is received.

Missy Elliott announces tour with Ciara, Busta Rhymes and Timbaland — how to get tickets

Missy Elliott's first time headlining a tour will be with people who have been a part of her music since the beginning of her career.

The famed rapper announced her "Out of This World — The Missy Elliott Experience" tour on social media April 8 and shared that singer Ciara, rapper Busta Rhymes and producer Timbaland will be on the road with her. They have collaborated with Elliott on songs throughout her career.

"ATTENTION IT’S TIME," her caption read. The post was a video featuring Elliott, Ciara and Busta Rhymes in an intergalactic space as they try to figure out where they are. Elliott then calls who she refers to as Tim, most likely Timbaland, for help.

"These three icons come together to show you something you've never seen before," Elliott says in the video.

“This is an incredible time in my life as I am experiencing so many milestone ‘firsts,’” she said. “Being the FIRST female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and now going out on my FIRST headline tour."

Disney Advisory Issued: Millions to Follow New Filming Protocol

Guests entering Disney's Hollywood Studios Theme Park at Walt Disney World Resort

250 new Disney attractions debuted this past week, but there is one rule that many guests are choosing to ignore.

Guests visiting several Disney parks worldwide can embark on an intergalactic adventure through Star Tours, transporting them to distant galaxies. Presently, this attraction is available at Walt Disney World (Disney’s Hollywood Studios), Disneyland (Disneyland Park), Disneyland Paris (Disneyland Paris Park), and Tokyo Disneyland.

On April 5, 250 new versions of the attraction debuted.

These are subtle changes that alter the storyline and the flying path that guests get to experience on the attraction, making the re-rideability factor immense.

As Disney shared , “ Hold on tight as urgent transmissions from Ahsoka Tano, Cassian Andor, the Mandalorian and Grogu may soon be part of your next Starspeeder flight.

Starting April 5, 2024, embark on exciting new S tar Wars adventures featuring characters and locations from some of your favorite Disney+ series. With these additions, you’ll have the opportunity to experience one of more than 250 storyline variations, including a visit to the planet Peridea from Ahsoka. Because the many story twists are random, you never know where you’ll go or who you may encounter along the way!”

Star Tours.

In 2011, Disney unveiled Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, a revamped version of the attraction incorporating 3D visuals and varied ride sequences, ensuring a unique experience for each guest.

Currently, Star Tours resides alongside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney World and Disneyland. However, Disneyland Paris offers a distinct setup. In this park, the ride is situated in Discoveryland, akin to Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland, alongside attractions like Hyper Space Mountain.

Notably, Disneyland Paris does not feature a dedicated Star Wars- themed land.

Disney fan Clint Gamache took to X to share that they were sad to see so many guests breaking explicit Disney rules, “It’s so disheartening to see content creators going and filming on rides and attractions when Disney/Universal whomever strictly prohibits it. I guess it’s really hard to follow rules.”

A digital rendering of a focused and determined Ahsoka Tano in the cockpit of a spacecraft, ready for an intergalactic adventure. The image promotes new scenes coming to Star Tours — The Adventures Continue at Disneyland, Disney World, and Disneyland Paris

While Gamache did not state what ride he was talking about, considering he said it the day the new Star Tours scenes debuted, and Star Tours is one of the few rides not to allow filming at Disney (similar to TRON Lightcycle / Run and Space Mountain, which would enable filming when the camera is secured) reporter Alicia Stella quickly explained:

Not too many Disney rides restrict it, but this one says this “One final reminder: smoking and photography are never permitted on any Star Tours flight.”
And that is more or less what I was referring to. Today specifically. — Clint Gamache (@iamcg83) April 6, 2024

Clint then confirmed that this is what they were referring to. With a new attraction often comes new social media posts and YouTube videos, and now, there are already many videos online that are showcasing some of the new show scenes that were added, even after being told not to.

It should be noted that Disney could go as far as to remove guests from the park who disobey their rules, so if you are told to not film on a ride, it is best to not do so.

Disney initially planned a simulator ride based on the 1979 movie The Black Hole. Unfortunately, the film’s box office bomb forced them to abandon that idea. However, Disney wasn’t ready to give up on the simulator concept. They already had a successful partnership with George Lucas, thanks to their collaboration on the 3D short film Captain EO. This existing relationship opened a door to a galaxy far, far away.

In 1986, Disney’s creative minds, known as Imagineers, saw the potential for a Star War s-themed simulator ride. Knowing Lucas’s own love for Disney parks, they approached him with the idea. Lucas enthusiastically embraced the concept, and Star Tours was born.

Guests ride a digital rendering of the outside of the Star Wars ride vehicle.

Star Tours debuted at Disneyland in 1987, replacing the former Adventure Thru Inner Space attraction. This new ride marked a significant leap forward in theme park technology. It utilized a first-of-its-kind motion simulator system, allowing guests to experience a thrilling flight through the Star Wars universe.

Guests boarded a StarSpeeder 1000 piloted by the initially hapless droid Rex (later replaced by the more competent RX-20). The unpredictable journeys took riders on daring escapes through asteroid fields, past iconic locations like the Death Star, and into close encounters with beloved characters like R2-D2 and C-3PO.

Star Tours revolutionized theme park experiences. Its success not only solidified the popularity of Star Wars but also paved the way for future interactive simulator rides across the Disney park system. The attraction received updates over the years, incorporating new destinations and characters from the prequel and sequel trilogies. This continuous evolution ensures Star Tours remains a beloved attraction for Star Wars fans of all ages.

Disney allowed to pause its federal lawsuit against Florida governor as part of settlement deal

ORLANDO, Fla. — An appellate court on Monday granted Disney’s request for a two-month pause in a federal lawsuit against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and his appointees to Walt Disney World’s governing district after the two sides reached a settlement on separate litigation in state court.

Disney’s request last Friday to the federal appellate court was motivated by last month’s settlement deal involving two Florida lawsuits between Disney and the DeSantis-appointed Central Florida Tourism Oversight District.

Disney had a deadline of next week to file an opening brief in its appeal to the federal Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, but that deadline is now set for mid-June.

The settlement deal halted almost two years of litigation that was sparked by DeSantis’ takeover of the district from Disney supporters following the company’s opposition to Florida’s so-called Don’t Say Gay law.

The new DeSantis appointees claimed the “eleventh-hour deals” neutered their powers and the district sued the company in state court in Orlando to have the contracts voided.

Disney filed counterclaims and asked the state court to declare the agreements valid and enforceable.

Under the settlement, the development agreement and covenants giving Disney design and construction control would be considered null and void, and the new board agreed to operate under a master plan that had been in effect before DeSantis took over the district.

Disney Fends Off Activist Investor for Second Time in 2 Years

Nelson Peltz had campaigned for two seats on Disney’s board of directors, as he sought to shake up the company’s growth plan.

Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, gesturing and speaking from a royal blue stage.

By Brooks Barnes

Reporting from Los Angeles

The activist investor Nelson Peltz and Ike Perlmutter, the former chairman of Marvel Entertainment, have failed to infiltrate Disney’s board for the second time in two years, losing a tensely fought contest for support of the company’s shareholders as part of a campaign to alter its direction.

The Walt Disney Company said on Wednesday that shareholders had voted to elect its entire slate of board nominees by a “substantial” margin — thus rejecting a demand by Mr. Peltz’s hedge fund, Trian Partners, for two seats and endorsing a growth plan that the company’s chief executive, Robert A. Iger, has laid out.

Trian controls about $3.5 billion in Disney stock, a vast majority of which is owned by Mr. Perlmutter. He and Mr. Peltz, both 81, had also tried to shake up the Disney board last year, abandoning the effort after Mr. Iger unveiled a sweeping turnaround plan .

“With the distracting proxy contest now behind us, we’re eager to focus 100 percent of our attention on our most important priorities: growth and value creation for our shareholders and creative excellence for our consumers,” Mr. Iger said.

Mr. Peltz received 31 percent of the vote from shareholders who thought he should join the company’s board, according to a preliminary count. In a statement, Trian said that it was “disappointed” with the outcome but that it was “proud of the impact we have had in refocusing this company on value creation and good governance.”

Disney shares dropped 3 percent on Wednesday.

The latest Disney-Trian contest devolved into one of the largest, priciest and nastiest in history. Trian spent about $25 million on its offensive, while Disney priced its defense at up to $40 million, according to securities filings. Both sides inundated investors with political-style campaign materials, including mailings, emails, social media ads, videos and phone calls.

Trian harshly criticized Disney’s streaming strategy, lagging stock price and succession planning. Disney denounced Trian as “disruptive and destructive” and portrayed Mr. Perlmutter as being driven by revenge.

Mr. Perlmutter sold Marvel to Disney in 2009 for $4 billion and joined the company’s leadership team. In 2012, Disney negotiated settlements with three Black consumer products executives who accused Mr. Perlmutter of mistreatment. In 2016, Mr. Perlmutter sought to fire Kevin Feige, Marvel’s movie chairman, for spending too much ($250 million) to make “Captain America: Civil War,” which sold $1.2 billion in tickets. Mr. Iger overruled him. Mr. Perlmutter also resisted making inclusion-oriented movies like “Black Panther,” which collected $1.4 billion.

Mr. Iger finally ousted him last year.

By winning the support of shareholders on Wednesday, Mr. Iger can push forward with his growth plan for Disney — one that includes overhauling ESPN for the streaming era , spending $60 billion on new theme park attractions and cruise ships and finding a new generation of hit movies.

But the victory did not leave Mr. Iger, 73, without bruises.

At first, he seemed poised to easily win. Prominent Disney investors like George Lucas and Laurene Powell Jobs publicly offered support. Disney family members, including Abigail E. Disney, blasted Mr. Peltz and his associates as “wolves in sheep’s clothing.” Analysts (Guggenheim, Macquarie) and shareholder advisory firms (Glass Lewis, ValueEdge) threw cold water on Trian’s campaign.

It became a much closer contest after ISS, an influential shareholder advisory firm, partly sided with Trian. Mr. Peltz also won the backing of Egan-Jones , another advisory; it faulted Disney for unnecessarily veering into what it called “the killing fields of the culture wars,” a reference to Disney’s blowup with Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida over an education law that opponents labeled “Don’t Say Gay.”

One large investor that backed Mr. Peltz, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System, or CalPERS, which owns about 6.6 million Disney shares, said the company would benefit from “fresh eyes.” It added that Mr. Peltz was “capable of leading needed change in corporate governance.”

In the end, Disney’s two biggest shareholders, Vanguard and BlackRock, which own a combined 12 percent of the company’s shares, ignored ISS and voted for Mr. Iger’s slate of directors. Mr. Iger also won crucial backing from small-fry investors: An unusually large amount of Disney shares (up to 40 percent) are held by individuals, many of them fans of the company’s movies and theme parks. (On average among public companies, individuals own closer to 15 percent of the shares.)

Roughly 75 percent of individual shareholders voted to elect the Disney slate, according to the preliminary tally.

Mr. Iger returned to run the company in 2022 — two years after he had retired — when the Disney board fired his hand-selected successor, Bob Chapek . During his earlier, 15-year stint, Mr. Iger delayed his retirement four times and seemed reluctant to leave when he did.

Ever since his return, Mr. Iger has encountered a seemingly nonstop array of challenges: repeated attacks by activist investors, sparring with Mr. DeSantis over control of government services at Disney World in Florida, two union strikes that shut down Hollywood for six months, the collapse of Walt Disney Animation films at the box office and even rebukes voiced and written by Elon Musk.

Should Disney sell ABC? How does ESPN navigate a transition to full-bore streaming? Who will take over as chief executive when Mr. Iger retires again?

Some of those questions remain.

“Regardless of the outcome of today’s vote, Trian will be watching the company’s performance,” Mr. Peltz said at the meeting before the results of the vote were announced. “Trian still has continuing concerns about the current strategy,” he said. “All we want is for Disney to get back to making great content and delighting consumers — and for Disney to create sustainable long-term value for all of the shareholders.”

In other news from Disney’s shareholder meeting, the company said investors had also voted against giving Blackwells Capital, a smaller activist hedge fund, seats on the board; it had campaigned for three.

“The company would have benefited from any one of our candidates for the hard work needed over the next few years to advance this iconic company, but we respect the will of the shareholders and the outcome,” Blackwells said in a statement.
