2023 Wells Fargo Championship: How to watch, TV schedule, streaming, tee times

Many of the best PGA Tour players are back in action this week for the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow. Here’s everything you need to know to watch the event, including a full Wells Fargo Championship TV schedule, streaming schedule and complete tee times for the first and second rounds.

Wells Fargo preview

Back in 2019, Max Homa captured his first-ever PGA Tour title at the Wells Fargo Championship. Since then, Homa has added five more victories, including a second triumph at Quail Hollow last season.

But he would have been better off waiting until this year to win, at least financially. That’s because this year’s Wells Fargo is a designated event with a total purse of $20 million and a winner’s share of $3.6 million.

While plenty of PGA Tour stars are in the field with Homa, including Rory McIlroy , Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas , two players who have dominated designated events this year are not: Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler.

Golf Channel and CBS will provide TV coverage of the Wells Fargo Championship, and PGA Tour Live on ESPN+, Peacock and Paramount+ will stream the action online, with ESPN+ providing exclusive early coverage of all four rounds.

Wyndham clark outduels xander schauffele to win 2023 wells fargo championship for first pga tour victory, share this article.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Seeing as it’s Coronation weekend across the pond in the United Kingdom, it’s only fitting a first-time PGA Tour winner would be crowned in the Queen City.

After five long years, the wait is over for Wyndham Clark.

Clark held a two-shot lead over world No. 5 Xander Schauffele and said after Saturday’s third round he was looking forward to the challenge of a high-stakes final round and was curious how he’d handle the pressure. The 29-year-old shot a 3-under 68 on Sunday at Quail Hollow to finish at 19 under and win by four shots over Schauffele for his maiden victory on Tour.

After a handful of close calls, Clark was truly beginning to wonder if he’d ever win on Tour.

“I know that sounds crazy because I’ve only been out here five years, but I had a lot of chances to where I was within two or three shots either going into the back nine or starting on a Sunday and I always seem to fall short, and not only that, but seem like I fell back in positions,” Clark explained. “I think in the past I sometimes shied away maybe from those pressure moments because I would get too amped up.”

“Today, I was excited. When he made putts, I was like, ‘yeah, all right, now I’ve got to do it.’ I just think Xander and I fed off each other really well Saturday and Sunday,” Clark continued. “He played amazing and I think a lot of how good I played was because he was putting pressure on me. So I just felt like all right, I can’t just coast in and make a bunch of pars, I’ve got to make birdies. Yeah, I really like how I handled the pressure.”

Schauffele, 29, shot a 1-under 70 on Sunday to finish runner-up at 15 under and inside the top five for the fifth time this season. Harris English (69) and Tyrrell Hatton (70) finished T-3 at 12 under.

WELLS FARGO :  Leaderboard  |  Best shots

Clark bogeyed the first hole and Schauffele birdied the third to tie the lead at 15 under before he briefly took the solo lead with another birdie on the par-5 7 th hole, the second easiest hole of the week. It didn’t take long for Clark to respond with his first birdie of the day on No. 8, and a Schauffele bogey on the ninth returned the lead to Clark with nine holes to play.

“Sure, early on it wasn’t as pretty as I wanted and I didn’t maintain the lead, but as I started making birdies and putts, I started to really believe that I could do this,” said Clark. “And fortunately Xander made some mistakes and then it really propelled me to continue playing well.”

Clark extended the lead to two with a birdie on the par-5 10th, and after a poor tee shot on the 11th found the pine straw among the trees, he managed a crucial up-and-down from the greenside bunker to save par and increase his lead to three after a bad Schauffele bogey. He then took a four-shot lead with six to play with a birdie on No. 12.

Both players made consecutive birdies on Nos. 14 and 15, but Schauffele’s third bogey of the day on the par-3 17th gave Clark a four-shot lead and the win.

Play big ❤️ Remembering his mom, these are words @Wyndham_Clark lives by on and off the course. He looks to play big today as he chases his first win on TOUR @WellsFargoGolf . pic.twitter.com/5o6h5UaGuf — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 7, 2023

While Clark may not be a household name, if you’ve been paying attention this season you’d know a victory was coming sooner rather than later for the Scottsdale, Arizona, resident. After a career-best Players Championship finish earlier this year in March (T-27), Clark has consistently been in the mix ever since with consecutive finishes of 5-6-T29-3-T24 entering this week. In 19 starts this season, Clark now has nine top-25 finishes, with six inside the top 10.

As the PGA Tour’s ninth designated event of the season, the 156-player field was competing for a $20 million purse. Clark took home the top prize of $3.6 million, a whopping seven times more than his previous largest paycheck on Tour, $485,000 after a 10th-place finish at the 2023 WM Phoenix Open.

The win doesn’t just earn Clark a massive payday, it also earns him a spot in this year’s Open Championship at Royal Liverpool as well as his first-ever Masters invitation for the 2024 event at Augusta National.

“I’ve dreamt about this since I was probably 6 years old,” said Clark. “Since I’ve been on the PGA Tour, you fantasize about it all the time, and I’ve done it multiple times this year where I catch myself daydreaming about winning, and to do it at this golf course against this competition is better than I could ever have imagined.”

“I really walked up (the 18th fairway) and I tried to do as good a job as possible to stay in the present but also look around and keep my head up and look at the sight and having all those people there,” he said. “You only can win your first tournament once, so I was really trying to soak it all in.”

Pga championship 101: history, qualifications and this year at valhalla golf club.

Take a look at some answers to frequently asked questions about the PGA Championship:

Still holding down the second spot?

Correct. The PGA Championship moved from the major finale in August to the second of the season in May, in 2019. Then 2020 came and the golf calendar was reorganized because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The PGA was contested again in August, after the U.S. Open and ahead of the Masters. Things returned to order in ’21 and, for the foreseeable future, the PGA of America’s crown jewel sits in its spring spot.

Wait, isn’t this the championship of the PGA Tour?

Sigh. No, this is not the championship of the PGA Tour. That would be considered The Players Championship. This is the championship of the PGA of America.

Why the need to designate “of America”? What else would it be – the PGA of Timbuktu?

Obviously we need a history lesson here. We’ll keep it as brief as possible. There used to be one PGA – the “of America” one, which was founded in 1916. In 1968, action was begun that resulted in an eventual split into the PGA of America and the PGA Tour.

Why the split?

The original golf pros were the people who work at golf clubs. You know, the ones who sell us logoed ball markers and take our green fees when they’re not trying to cure our slices by giving us lessons. The better players among them also played the national tournament circuit.

As golf grew in popularity and tournaments became more lucrative, a class of pros evolved who were tournament players first and foremost. If they held a club job, it was often ceremonial.

Over time, more of these pros discarded the idea of working at a club at all, instead devoting full time to tournament play.

OK, I follow you so far.

So now you had one organization, the PGA of America, trying to represent the interests of two entirely different types of “golf pros.” No surprise that the root of the dispute was money, specifically what to do with what was becoming a windfall in rights fees from the TV networks. The tournament players, a group that included Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, wanted that money to go to increased tournament purses, while the club pros wanted it to go into the PGA’s general fund. Eventually the touring pros broke off on their own. The PGA of America remained in place, representing the traditional “club” pros.

If the PGA of America was no longer going to represent the interests of tournament players, why does it still have a championship? And why is it a major?

It wanted to keep the PGA Championship alive for many reasons, not the least of which is that it generates considerable revenue. As for your second question, that is a big ol’ can of worms for another day. We will say this, however. For most of the PGA Championship’s existence, it has had a justifiable status as a major. Whether that will ever change, whether it will ever be replaced in the major rotation by The Players Championship is anyone’s guess. But golf is a game that respects – and clings to – tradition.

Anything else about its history that sets it apart?

The most obvious thing is that from its inception in 1916 through 1957, the PGA was a match-play tournament. It has been periodically suggested that it return to match play, but that is not considered likely. Prior to the shift to May in 2019, it was previously held during this month in 1949, when Sam Snead won.

PGA Championship - Final Round

We get the May thing, but why no longer match play?

Worst-case scenario – all the highly seeded “name” players get eliminated before the final. If you’re a TV network that has spent big bucks to televise this event, do you want two guys you’re never heard of in the final?

Speaking of the final, what’s the name of the winner’s trophy?

It’s called the Wanamaker Trophy, and it was named after Rodman Wanamaker, a department store magnate who was influential in the formation of the PGA.

How does a player qualify for this major?

There are 13 ways, based on the 2023 criteria (will be updated when PGA releases full 2024 criteria):

  • All former winners of the PGA Championship
  • Winners of the last five Masters (2019-23)
  • Winners of the last five U.S. Opens (2018-22)
  • Winners of the last five Open Championships (2017-22) [Note: Canceled in 2020]
  • Winners of the last three Players Championships (2021-23)
  • The top three on the OWGR’s International Federation Ranking List as of April 24, 2023
  • Winner of 2022 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship
  • The top 15 finishers and ties from the 2022 PGA Championship
  • The top 20 finishers from the 2023 PGA Professional Championship
  • The top 70 players who are eligible and have earned the most PGA Championship points from the 2022 AT&T Byron Nelson through the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship (ending May 7, 2023)
  • Playing members of the last named U.S. and European Ryder Cup teams (2021), provided they remain in the top 100 on the Official World Golf Rankings as of May 7, 2023
  • Winners of PGA Tour co-sponsored or approved tournaments whose victories are considered official, from the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge through the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson
  • If necessary to complete the 156-person field, those players beyond the top 70 players who are eligible and who have earned the most PGA Championship points from the 2022 AT&T Byron Nelson through the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship (ending May 7, 2023) in order of their position on such a list

Are LIV Golf players eligible?

Yes, as long as they meet the above criteria.

I probably should have asked this a lot earlier, but what does PGA stand for?

Professional Golfers’ Association. Remember, in the early years of the 20th century, pros were looked down upon. It was only natural that they band together under one umbrella organization.

Let’s get to the tournament itself. The Masters has Jack Nicklaus winning at age 46 in 1986 and Tiger Woods’ remarkable turns in ’97 and ’19. The U.S. Open has 20-year-old Francis Ouimet upsetting two of the top British pros in 1913 and Arnold Palmer’s charge in 1960. The Open Championship has the Duel in the Sun in 1977 and Woods destroying the field in 2000. So, what have been the most memorable PGAs?

It would be hard to beat a then-unknown John Daly winning in 1991. He got into the tournament as ninth – ninth! – alternate, then torched the course with a combination of absurdly long driving and incredible touch around the greens. Then there was Bob Tway holing a final-hole bunker shot to beat Greg Norman in 1986 – something we didn’t yet know would become a trend. And who could have predicted that the player who would give Woods his toughest test would be one of his former junior-golf rivals, Bob May, who did everything except beat him in 2000? And, of course, there was 2021, when Phil Mickelson, at age 51, became the oldest-ever major champion.

What happened last year?

Brooks Koepka won his third Wanamaker trophy at Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford, New York. The LIV Golf player shot 72-66-66-67 to win by two shots over Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler.

Who has won the most PGA Championships?

Nicklaus and Walter Hagen have each won five times. Woods has won four times. Woods has twice won back-to-back in this major, in 1999-2000 and 2006-07.

Where are they playing?

Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. The venue is owned by the PGA of America and has hosted three PGA Championships. Mark Brooks won in a playoff over Kenny Perry in 1996. Tiger Woods prevailed in a playoff over Bob May in 2000. And, Rory McIlroy beat Phil Mickelson by a stroke in 2014. Valhalla also hosted the 2008 Ryder Cup, won by the U.S.

Jordan Spieth, RBC Heritage

Jordan Spieth almost walked off the golf course after hitting a bunker shot on Harbour Town’s 13th hole during the first round of the RBC Heritage .

His follow-through slammed into the bulkhead of the trap, leading a tendon in his wrist to pop out , per Paul Hodowanic of the PGA Tour.

“It’s a thing that’s recurring,” Spieth said Friday at the RBC Heritage.

“I was lucky because most times it comes out, and I can’t turn it, and so I would have been screwed. It’s the [extensor carpi ulnaris] tendon. It came out and came right back in its groove.”

The three-time major champion then made an eye-popping admission.

“On 14 [on Thursday], I thought I was done for the week,” Spieth said.

“Then it came back in, and I was like, ‘alright, I’m good.’”

Spieth originally injured his wrist at the Wells Fargo Championship in May 2023. He then skipped out on the AT&T Byron Nelson and battled through the injury at Oak Hill during the PGA Championship .

Fast forward five months, and Spieth re-aggravated his injury after the Ryder Cup .

“I was very shocked when I reinjured it,” Spieth said at the Hero World Challenge about his setback in October.

“I was reaching for a toaster to make my son breakfast, and I was just supporting it on the shelf. It just made no sense because I’m like, ‘What’s going to prevent this from happening at any other point in time?’ And now I’m [going to be] out two-plus weeks, so I feel good about that not being the case going forward.”

But his beleaguered wrist has continued to bother him.

It flared up again at the Valero Texas Open two weeks ago, but he played through the pain once more, finishing in a tie for 10th. He then missed the cut at Augusta National .

Then, on Thursday, Spieth’s third shot on the 13th hole happened.

“Because my [wrist] sheath is torn, it doesn’t really hold it in as well,” Spieth said.

“It’s one of those things. It’s not affecting [my] speed or anything like that. I just [have to] manage it. So today, it was just that the tape, the way it’s on, is going to inhibit [the tendon’s] ability to create any issues.

Spieth went on to finish with five straight pars to wrap up his opening round, carding a 1-under 70. He then received some treatment, decided to remain in the tournament, and proceeded to shoot a 4-under 67 on Friday, which featured a long putt for birdie on the 18th hole to close out the round.

“I may as well keep [wearing the tape],” Spieth added.

“I don’t really like wearing tape, just because, I don’t know, I feel like I’m going to play racquetball or something. I’ll do it the rest of the week, I’m sure, just to be sure.”

2024 RBC Heritage odds, picks, field, predictions: Golf insider fading Rory McIlroy at Harbour Town

Sia nejad reveals his rbc heritage 2024 picks, props and sleepers for this week's pga tour event in hilton head, s.c..

rory-mcilroy-usatsi.jpg

Two of the PGA Tour's biggest stars will be paired in the same group when Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth tee off in the 2024 RBC Heritage beginning on Thursday at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, S.C. Ranked No. 1 in the world, Scheffler enters the 2024 RBC Heritage red-hot, having won three of his last four starts, including last week's Masters. Meanwhile, Spieth is trending in the opposite direction, having missed the cut in three of his last four starts. The two former Texas Longhorns are scheduled to tee off at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Scheffler is the overwhelming favorite in the 2024 RBC Heritage odds at +400, while Spieth is a +3500 longshot to win. Xander Schauffele, who finished eighth at the Masters, is the +1000 second choice. Rory McIlroy (+1200), Ludvig Aberg (+1200) and Patrick Cantlay (+1400) round out the top five choices in the RBC Heritage 2024 field. Before locking in any 2024 RBC Heritage picks, make sure you  see the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf betting and fantasy expert Sia Nejad .

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He's had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and in betting head-to-head matchups. He also has been solid with his head-to-head matchups since last year's Charles Schwab Challenge, going 39-27-2 and returning 8.31 units over that span. That's a $831 profit for $100 bettors since May 2023.

Nejad also nailed 75-1 longshot Wyndham Clark as the outright winner at the Wells Fargo Championship. In 2023, SportsLine debuted "The Early Wedge," and in the first three months of the show, he hit two first-round leaders and three outright winners.

Now, Nejad has focused his attention on the 2024 RBC Heritage field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. See who they are at SportsLine .

Top 2024 RBC Heritage expert picks

One surprise: Nejad is completely fading Rory McIlroy, even though he is one of the favorites at +1200. McIlroy enters the week ranked No. 2 in the world. He will be making only his third career start at Harbour Town and just his second since 2010. In his last appearance at Hilton Head, he finished 41st in 2020.

Nejad doesn't like how McIlroy has played so far this season on the PGA Tour. He finished 66th in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am before coming in 24th at the Genesis Invitational. In March, he came in 21st against a watered-down field at the Cognizant Classic, 21st again at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and 19th at the Players Championship. After a third-place showing in the Valero Texas Open, he finished 22nd at the Masters. "I have no interest in betting McIlroy at a short number," Nejad told SportsLine.

However, Nejad is high on the chances of Will Zalatoris, who's listed as a +2800 longshot. No. 10 in the FedEx Cup standings, Zalatoris has returned from microdiscectomy surgery to correct two herniated discs in his back to post three top-10 and four top-25 finishes this season.

He enters Harbour Town playing some good golf. He has finished inside the top 10 in three of his last five events and is coming off a T-9 showing in last week's Masters. "Zalatoris doesn't have much history at the RBC, but his recent history screams that a win is near," Nejad said.  See which other golfers to back at SportsLine .

How to make 2024 RBC Heritage picks

Nejad has locked in his best bets for the 2024 RBC Heritage and is backing several longshots, including one that is priced at more than +4000. This player is a "great course fit" and is a longshot who could surprise. You can see Nejad's PGA Tour picks only at SportsLine .

So which players should you target or avoid for the 2024 RBC Heritage, and which player in the   RBC Heritage 2024 field could bring a huge payday at more than +4000? Check out the odds below, then visit SportsLine to see Sia Nejad's top picks for the 2024 RBC Heritage , all from the expert who is 39-27-2 on his last 68 head-to-head picks.
