UPDATE: MS Ambience of Ambassador Cruise Line cancels several cruises due to technical issues

Follow up our latest UPDATE of December 30th here .

UPDATE December 28th: It is confirmed, that the docking and repairs of MS Ambience of Ambassador Cruise Line take place in Bremerhaven/Germany. The local Yard „Lloyd-Werft“ has a long tradition and experience in cruiseship repairs and modernisation. So, MS Ambience arrived there in the late afternoon of December 20th after a 26hrs nonstop run from Tilbury/UK.

British cruise operator Ambassador Cruise Line will take its currently only ship, MS Ambience, out of service unscheduled. Safety problems have been identified that do not allow the ship to continue operating, according to the cruise line. Therefore MS Ambience will now sail to Bremerhaven / Germany for a short term dry dock stay. It was not possible to carry out the repair work in Tilbury or England. The name of the dry dock was not mentioned, but it could well be Bremerhaven Lloyd Werft, which has long worked in the cruise ship business in the field of modernization and maintenance.

„We do not compromise on the safety of our guests, employees and crew,“ Ambassador said in a statement. „Although we have already started the work, unfortunately we are unable to complete it in the Port of Tilbury, which is why Ambience has to go into dry dock.

Because MS Ambience could not be repaired on site in Tilbury, Ambassador Cruise Line further announced that its Grand Christmas and New Year’s cruise to the Canary Islands must be canceled. This was scheduled to take place beginning Wednesday, December 21, 2022 and last 15 days. All affected passengers should be informed by the cruise line via mail and provided with further information, as well as any rebooking options.

The company’s Christmas cruise was scheduled to visit the Canary Islands for 15 days. As of today, MS Ambience is now scheduled to return to service on January 5, 2023, for a 42-night cruise to the Caribbean.

More detailed background information on the reasons for the short-term failure of the ship is not available.

Cruise Industry News reported in an earlier release that problems with a lifeboat station are believed to have led to the ship’s inoperability. These problems were found during an annual safety inspection.

Ambassador apologises after urgent repairs force it to switch ships and cancel sailing

Ambassador Cruise Line ship Ambience

Ambassador Cruise Line has cancelled a Caribbean cruise on board its ship Ambition and some Festive Events on Ambience.

The cruise line confirmed the changes today, after finding out vital repairs need to carried out on Ambience .

Ambience has been in dry dock since 17 November and had been due to return to Tilbury yesterday (7 December), but the cruise line was informed on 3 December that the ship’s propeller shafts and stern bearings were damaged and it won’t be able to sail until early January.

Ambassador has decided to switch Ambience’s scheduled operation to Ambition and has cancelled Ambition’s West Indies & Dutch Antilles cruise on 11 December.

“Regrettably, we were informed that the additional but necessary maintenance works will not be concluded in time to operate our itineraries onboard Ambience as scheduled, with the ship only able to return to the UK in early January ahead of Ambience’s Grand Round The World Cruise,” Ambassador said.

More than 6,600 guests are booked on Ambience cruises in December, compared to 800 booked on Ambition’s West Indies & Dutch Antilles cruise, so the cruise line said it made operational sense to cancel the Caribbean sailing and transfer the other itineraries to Ambition .

In addition to the 11 December West Indies cruise cancellation on Ambition , Ambience’s Festive Event lunch and dinner sittings on 9 December (A12322L, A12322FD and A12322SD) have also been cancelled.

The five-night German Christmas Markets cruise (A12323) departing 10 December, will now take place on Ambition but will operate as a four-night cruise, leaving on 11 December. The itinerary has been amended, with Hamburg replaced with an overnight in Antwerp.

Ambience’s Festive Event lunch and dinners on 15 December (A12324L, A12324FD and A12324SD) and 16 December (A12325L, A12325FD and A12325SD) will take place on Ambition.

Itinerary A12326, the Ambience Festive Market Getaway on 17 December will now take place on Ambition .

The Ambienc e Christmas & New Year Voyage on 21 December (A12327) will now also take place on Ambition . The duration will change from 16 to 17 nights, returning to Tilbury on 7 January instead of the planned 6 January.

Ambassador added: “We have sent out communications to advise that  Ambition will now host the majority of Ambience sailings and Festive Events through to early January, limiting the impact on the majority of Ambassador guests over the festive period.”

The cruise line said all affected guests have been informed of ‘generous transfer and compensation options’ where relevant.

CEO Christian Verhounig apologised to passengers, saying: “It is never an easy decision to change or cancel any Ambassador sailing, particularly at this time of year.”

Moscow cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-03-18 05:51

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

ambience cruise ship dry dock

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

ambience cruise ship dry dock

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.
