You’ll be cruising if you follow these tips.
A travel agent is sharing the key steps passengers should take if they fail to re-board their cruise ship before its designated departure time.
Late last week, 8 Norwegian Cruise passengers, including 6 Americans, were left stranded in Africa after their ship left port without them because their private land tour ran overtime.
It’s commonplace for cruise ships to dock for days or hours at various ports, allowing those on board the chance to disembark and explore local areas.
And while it’s rare for a vessel to sail off again without everyone back on board, Big Apple travel agent Joanna Kuther says it can be a bureaucratic nightmare if you’re left behind.
“It’s one of those things like, it’s not a problem until it’s a problem,” she told USA Today on Tuesday.
If you return to port to find your ship sailing off in the distance, the expert advised immediately contacting the cruise line to let them know.
Kuther added that a stranded passenger should also reach out to their travel agent to help handle logistics, such as booking emergency accommodation or connecting flights.
The nearest US embassy may also be able to offer assistance, but it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to claim expenses on insurance, particularly if land activities were not organized by the cruise company itself.
Kuther says savvy travelers should pick shore excursions organized by the cruise or a vendor they’ve partnered with that guarantees to get passengers back before re-boarding time.
In order to avoid missing departure time, Kuther also dished some practical tips.
She urged passengers to make sure their watch is set to ship time rather than local time, which may be different
“So many people get confused with that,” she declared, adding that travelers should aim to arrive back at the boat with at least an hour to spare.
And if you’re disembarking the ship, Kuther claims there are essentials you need to take in case anything goes awry.
“You probably should have your passport with you because you’re going to need it to get on a flight to get to the next port, especially if it’s in a different country,” Kuther advised.
She added that travelers should take a credit card in case they’re forced to fork out for any unexpected expenses, including emergency accommodation.
And while the 8 passengers left stranded by Norweigan have ripped the cruise line, accusing them of neglecting its “basic duty of care,” Kurther says the vessels are on tight schedules while in port.
“If they have to leave at a certain time, they have to leave at that time,” she declared

What we know and don’t know about pollution from the Key Bridge collapse
Containers carrying hazardous materials were damaged. there is a sheen in the water. recovery work runs the risk of stirring up toxic sediments..
Less than a week after a container ship rammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge — causing the Baltimore bridge to collapse and topple partly onto the ship — officials are still working to identify and contain environmental pollutants that may be leaking into the Patapsco River.
So far, officials have released little information about the 764 tons of hazardous materials onboard the container ship Dali or the source of a sheen seen on the surface of the water near the crash site.
“Any time there’s a catastrophic event like this, there’s a potential for water pollution,” said Leda Huta, executive director of Waterkeepers Chesapeake, a nonprofit water quality watchdog for the Chesapeake Bay. “There are more than a million people living in that watershed, and it’s been a longtime struggle to ensure that the community has clean water that’s swimmable, fishable and drinkable.”
Here’s what to know about the potential environmental impacts of the crash.
What hazardous materials were on the ship?
The Dali was carrying 56 containers holding 764 tons of hazardous materials, mostly corrosive and flammable liquids and lithium ion batteries, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Officials said 14 hazardous containers are damaged.
Flammable and corrosive liquids typically travel in steel drums and tanks or industrial “totes” designed to safely transport hazardous materials. “While the [shipping] containers may be damaged from the bridge falling on them, those [drums and totes] are extremely strong and they can hold up very well,” said James Bell, president of ADCO Environmental Services, a Chicago-based company that does hazardous material cleanups.
Video released by the NTSB shows inspectors taking stock of the hazardous materials onboard the ship. Some frames appear to show ruptured steel drums. An NTSB spokesperson declined to detail what’s inside the hazardous containers. An initial report listed soap, perfume and unspecified resins among the contents.
The status of the containers with lithium ion batteries — which are made of toxic metals such as cobalt, nickel, and manganese — was not immediately clear.
What’s causing the sheen on the Patapsco River?
First responders reported a sheen on the Patapsco River, which appears to be pollution from the Dali. But officials haven’t figured out the exact source. At a news conference Friday, Petty Officer Kimberly Reaves, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Coast Guard, said a police helicopter was monitoring the sheen. “We are assessing the scene so our first responders can work safely,” Reaves said.
Adam Ortiz, the Environmental Protection Agency’s Mid-Atlantic regional administrator, said there is “no indication of active releases” from the Dali, but that it was still being monitored.
What are officials doing to contain leaks?
Officials have placed 2,400 feet of sorbent boom, a floating material that can absorb oil spills, around the crash site to contain pollution. Sorbent booms are made from a material similar to disposable diapers and can’t contain oil for very long, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Officials also placed 2,400 feet of hard containment boom around the ship. These plastic booms also float at the surface, but they have a weighted skirt that hangs underwater to stop oil from spreading.
Investigators from the NTSB and the Coast Guard have boarded the Dali to inspect the hazardous materials on the ship, but they have not detailed their findings publicly.
Could the local fishery be affected?
To some degree. Maryland’s crab fishing season starts on April 1, and parts of the Patapsco near the Key bridge have long been popular with those who use trotlines — lines strung with bait — to catch blue crabs. Boating restrictions near the salvage site will prevent recreational anglers from getting near the bridge for an indefinite period.
CJ Canby, a captain who has been crabbing in the area for 23 years, said he wasn’t worried about the environmental impacts of the crash. He’s more worried about the impacts of wastewater treatment plants on the Patapsco River and nearby Cox Creek, which he blames for algal blooms and fish kills.
“Even if fuel oil spilled, it would still be nothing compared to what the sewage treatment plants are doing every single day,” Canby said.
How does pollution figure in the area’s history?
The Key Bridge collapsed amid a decades-long effort to clean up industrial pollution in the Chesapeake Bay and the Patapsco River.
“This watershed and Baltimore’s waterways have been plagued with pollution for a long time,” said Huta. “That’s been trash. It’s been toxins and forever chemicals. It’s sewage and polluted stormwater. So it is a watershed that really has been taking a beating and can’t really afford new sources of pollution.”
The bridge collapsed near the Sparrows Point Terminal Superfund site , which was once the site of a steel plant that dumped toxic waste into the Patapsco River and nearby Bear Creek. Before the bridge collapsed, officials had been planning to clean up toxic sediments at the bottom of the creek and river.
In a blog post, the nonprofit Chesapeake Bay Foundation raised concerns that cleanup efforts might stir up these toxic sediments , harming water quality and potentially sending the pollutants to wash up onshore in nearby residential areas, such as Turner Station, a predominantly Black community that faces frequent flooding.
That was before several thousand tons of bridge debris fell into the Patapsco River. Officials will now have to remove the wreckage from the riverbed.
“Front-line communities in the bigger Chesapeake Bay watershed have been bearing the burden of pollution and toxins disproportionately,” Huta said, “so it’s especially important that we put all of our efforts into righting that historic wrong.”
Could there be other environmental impacts?
Yes. With the Port of Baltimore shut down, cargo normally going through the port will have to be rerouted by truck, potentially increasing diesel emissions in areas that don’t experience that pollution. In addition, trucks that previously crossed the Key bridge — including those that carry hazardous material — will have to find other routes.

Who owns the ship that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore?
By Megan Cerullo

Updated on: March 26, 2024 / 5:05 PM EDT / CBS News
The collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday after being struck by a cargo ship has raised questions about who owns and manages the ship, as well as on the potential impact on one the busiest ports in the U.S.
Called the Dali, the 948-foot vessel that hit the bridge is managed by Synergy Marine Group, a Singapore-based company with over 660 ships under management worldwide, according to its website . The group said the ship was operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group and chartered by Danish shipping giant Maersk at the time of the incident, which sent vehicles and people tumbling into the Patapsco River.
"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," Maersk said in a statement to CBS News on Tuesday, in which it also confirmed the ship was carrying cargo for Maersk customers. The company had no crew or personnel aboard the ship.
The Dali, which can carry up to 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, was carrying nearly 4,700 containers at the time of the collision. It was operated by a 22-person, Indian crew. It was not immediately clear what kind of cargo the ship was carrying.
Who owns and manages the Dali?
The Dali is owned by Grace Ocean Private, a Singapore-based company that provides water transportation services. The ship was chartered by Danish container shipping company Maersk at the time of the collision.
Synergy Marine, founded in 2006, provides a range of ship management services, including managing ships' technical components and their crews and overseeing safety, according to S&P Capital IQ. Its parent company, Unity Group Holdings International, an investment holding company, was founded in 2008 and is based in Hong Kong.
Where was the ship headed?
The outbound ship had left Baltimore and was headed for Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, Synergy Marine Group said in a press release .
How busy is the Port of Baltimore?
In 2023, the Port of Baltimore handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo, worth $80 billion, according to the office of Maryland Gov. Wes Moore. The port is also a significant provider of local jobs.
The top port in the U.S. for sugar and gypsum imports, it is the ninth busiest U.S. port by the total volume and value of foreign cargo handled. All vessel traffic into and out of the facility is currently suspended, although the port remains open and trucks continue to be processed within its terminals, according to a statement released by Port of Baltimore officials.
What is the potential local economic impact?
Directly, the port supports 15,300 jobs, while another 140,000 in the area are related to port activities. The jobs provide a combined $3.3 billion in personal income, according to a CBS News report . The Port of Baltimore said Tuesday that it is unclear how long ship traffic will be suspended.
The disaster also caused chaos for local drivers. The Maryland Transportation Authority said all lanes were closed in both directions on I-695, with traffic being detoured to I-95 and I-895.
How could the bridge collapse affect consumers and businesses?
Experts say the bridge collapse could cause significant supply chain disruptions.
"While Baltimore is not one of the largest U.S. East Coast ports, it still imports and exports more than 1 million containers each year, so there is the potential for this to cause significant disruption to supply chains," Emily Stausbøll, a market analyst at Xeneta, an ocean and air freight analytics platform, said in a statement.
She added that freight services from Asia to the East Coast in the U.S. have already been hampered by drought in the Panama Canal, as well as risks related to conflict in the Red Sea. Nearby ports, including those in New York, New Jersey and Virginia, will be relied on to handle more shipments if Baltimore remains inaccessible.
Whether ocean freight shipping rates will rise dramatically, potentially affecting consumers as retailers pass along higher costs, will depend on how much extra capacity the alternate ports can handle, Stausbøll said. "However, there is only so much port capacity available and this will leave supply chains vulnerable to any further pressure."
Marty Durbin, senior vice president of policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said that the bridge is a critical connector of "people, businesses, and communities."
"Unfortunately, its prolonged closure will likely disrupt commercial activities and supply chains that rely on the bridge and Port of Baltimore each day," he said in a statement.
What other industries could be affected?
Trucking companies could be severely affected by the disaster.
"Aside from the obvious tragedy, this incident will have significant and long-lasting impacts on the region," American Trucking Associations spokesperson Jessica Gail said, calling Key Bridge and Baltimore's port "critical components'' of the nation's infrastructure.
Gail noted that 1.3 million trucks cross the bridge every year — 3,600 a day. Trucks that carry hazardous materials will now have to make 30 miles of detours around Baltimore because they are prohibited from using the city's tunnels, she said, adding to delays and increasing fuel costs.
"Time-wise, it's going to hurt us a lot," added Russell Brehm, the terminal manager in Baltimore for Lee Transport, which trucks hazardous materials such as petroleum products and chemicals. The loss of the bridge will double to two hours the time it takes Lee to get loads from its terminal in Baltimore's Curtis Bay to the BJ's gasoline station in the waterfront neighborhood of Canton, he estimated.
Cruise operators are also being affected. A Carnival cruise ship that set off Sunday for the Bahamas had been scheduled to return to Baltimore on March 31. Carnival said Tuesday that it is "currently evaluating options for Carnival Legend's scheduled return on Sunday." The company also has cruises scheduled to set sail from Baltimore through the summer.
Norwegian Cruise Line last year introduced new routes departing from the Port of Baltimore. Its sailings are scheduled for late this year. The company said the Key Bridge collapse doesn't immediately require it to reroute any ships.
Who will pay to rebuild the bridge?
President Biden said Tuesday that the federal government, with congressional support, would pay to rebuild the bridge.
"We're going to work with our partners in Congress to make sure the state gets the support it needs. It's my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge," Biden said in comments from the White House. "And I expect the Congress to support my effort. This is going to take some time. The people of Baltimore can count on us though, to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."

I can find you good reasons to back each of the top eight on the odds board for the Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio this week, but instead, I’ll give you one reason why maybe you shouldn’t.
They’re all in the Masters field next week.
Rory McIlroy (a +1000 favorite at BetMGM Sportsbook), Ludvig Åberg (+1200), Hideki Matsuyama (+1800), Collin Morikawa (+2000), Corey Conners (+2200), Jordan Spieth (+2200), Max Homa (+2500) and Matt Fitzpatrick (+2800) are all sensational golfers.
In fact, they have 11 majors between them and of those in the group who don’t… Well, Conners is a two-time Valero champion, Homa is a six-time TOUR winner and Åberg is already a PGA TOUR, DP World Tour and Ryder Cup winner at age 24.
But the fact is, a player not already qualified for a trip down Magnolia Lane has won seven of the last 10 occasions. with the final April Masters ticket available via a last-ditch TOUR win. Is this coincidence?
My feelings as to why this has happened, is rooted in absolute focus. The strength of competition on the PGA TOUR is so deep that if you let your mind wander for just a shot or two, you can pay the ultimate price. And with the Masters on the horizon, anyone set to tee it up there, cannot help but have half an eye forward. Lots goes into Masters week, both on and off the course.
I might be alone in this way of thinking. Colleagues at Golfbet tell me I may be putting too much emphasis on this. And they can point to Conners as one of the outliers on his way to winning last year. Spieth was another in 2021. So, we do have proof from this crew that using TPC San Antonio as a way to get reps in before the first major of the year can result in triumph.
Corey Conners wins again at Valero Texas Open
The first round becomes the key for those playing in Augusta the week after. Start strong and they’ll be looking to keep the mojo going in Texas. Start poorly and the energy needed to grind hard for three days gets subconsciously weighed up against pre-tournament practice in another state.
Perhaps, the best argument against ignoring Masters-bound players is based on field strength. This is the highest quality field in this timeslot for some time, so the trend toward the non-exempt crew might be turning on numbers alone. There were just 11 players in the same boat a year ago compared to 30 this week. The loss of the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship in the lead up to the Masters brings more players to San Antonio looking to sharpen their games.
Joining the above in heading from Valero to Augusta National are Byeong Hun An, Eric Cole, Austin Eckroat, Harris English, Tommy Fleetwood, Rickie Fowler, Ryan Fox, Lucas Glover, Brian Harman, Russell Henley, Ryo Hisatsune, Lee Hodges, Nicolai Højgaard, Zach Johnson, Tom Kim, Denny McCarthy, Grayson Murray, Thorbjørn Olesen, Adam Schenk, Adam Scott, Erik van Rooyen and Camilo Villegas.
I’m not suggesting ignoring these stud players all together. Much as we talked about when we expected one side of the draw to be easier than the other at the recent Valspar Championship because of weather, perhaps we need to look at both Masters-eligible and not-yet-eligible options this week. Spread our units more thinly or cast a wider net.
I’d like to wait until after the important opening round. Then you’ll have a good idea of who is contending, and who might be out of the mix early. Also, be aware of the early weather forecast calling for Friday afternoon wind gusts. We got burned on this at Valspar, but it’s important to monitor nonetheless. It’s possible the late-early wave is set to get the best of conditions.
We know TPC San Antonio is a Strokes Gained: Approach course – five of the last six Valero champions were top four in SG: Approach and three of them led the field. Last year the top four on the leaderboard were also the top four in SG: Approach.
Stretching it out, we see seven of the last eight winners were top five in SG: Tee-to-Green… so it extends to driving and around the green. This is no doubt a ball-striking course.
The last three winners in Spieth, J.J. Spaun and Conners were all 10 under on the par 5s on the way to victory. This ties into the fact that TPC San Antonio sees a much higher-than-average amount of approach shots from over 250 yards.
He knew it was coming via his world ranking, but one of the last officially invited players to the Masters is someone I also like this week at TPC San Antonio. An +3300 has had some success here in the past – a T6 last season and T7 in 2019 – and is also quietly putting together a nice season despite missing the cut at THE PLAYERS in his last start. Prior to that, An put up five top-25s and three top-10s. He sits 15th in SG: Off-the-Tee and 25th in SG: Tee-to-Green and also ranks second in birdie average. His propensity to make some errors does concern me a little, but I also appreciate his good proximity from long distance this week.
From the non-Masters crew, I had to admire (even if somewhat begrudgingly as it helped my lead in the Golfbet expert picks tally disappear) Billy Horschel’s (+3300) efforts last Sunday in Houston, as he surged up the leaderboard for a T7. It made three top-12 finishes in his last four starts and gives hope we are seeing a return to some of the former FedExCup winner's best stuff. He's been missing from Valero for a while but has three top-fours in the event. He ranks sixth in SG: Total, 27th SG: Tee-to-Green and 14th in SG: Putting among other impressive moves. And, I can’t forget the iron clinic he threw at us out of nowhere a few years back in winning the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday.
Billy Horschel on current state of his game at Valero
Place Markets
In the Masters crew, you can’t leave defending champion Conners (+225 for Top 10) out of your thoughts in any format this week. Also the winner in 2019, as a Monday qualifier no less, he has great vibes going at TPC San Antonio. He’s made for this track. Currently ranks second on TOUR in Greens in Regulation percentage, sixth in SG: Approach, 10th in SG: Tee-to-Green, 22nd in driving accuracy, 14th in Proximity, second in approaches from 275+ yards … the list of reasons goes on and on.
From those not thinking about Magnolia Lane, I am going back to the well on Aaron Rai (+400 for a Top 10) and Andrew Novak (+350 for Top 20, +130 for a Top 40). Rai has finished T28 and T29 in his previous starts here so if you want to go more conservative for a top 20 that might make sense. We did, after all, connect on top 20 and 40 last week. But he is coming off a T7 and sits 19th on TOUR in SG: Tee-to-Green and leads the TOUR in driving accuracy.
Novak was ninth at the Valero Texas Open a year ago and has since improved as a player. His fade over the weekend in Houston was not fun to watch – falling from a top-10 chance to a T53, but I’m giving him another chance at 16th on TOUR in SG: Approach and 18th in SG: Tee-to-Green.
Veterans are on my radar this week, starting with Ryan Moore (+12500). This long-timer has three Valero top-10s and a recent T5 at the Valspar Championship. He also ranks fourth on TOUR in Strokes Gained: Approach and 12th in SG: Tee-to-Green. Only his putter is holding him back. Then you’ve also got Matt Kuchar at +125000 . His last four trips to TPC San Antonio were T3-T2-T12-T7.

The Black Keys should have UGK and Outkast's 2007 hit "Int'l Players Anthem" blast through every arena they take the stage on during their forthcoming tour - it would only be fitting. The band has announced the 2024 International Players tour in support of their forthcoming album Ohio Players , out Friday. The North American run of shows will feature special guests The Head And The Heart on select dates.
The International Players tour will run for 31 dates, beginning in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Sept. 17 and wrapping in Detroit, Michigan, on Nov. 12. The Black Keys will make stops in Austin, Houston, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Toronto, Nashville, Louisville, New York, Baltimore, Chicago, and more. The band will also perform two hometown shows in Ohio.
General sale for the tour will begin on Friday, April 5 at 10 a.m. local time. Presales will run throughout the week through Live Nation and the official Black Keys website.
Ohio Players marks the studio album number 12 for the Black Keys and their first since 2022's Dropout Boogie . "We'd never worked harder to make a record. It's never taken us this long to make an album. We took our time and did it right," Dan Auerbach shared in a statement earlier this year.
"We had this epiphany: ‘We can call our friends to help us make music.' It's funny because we both write songs with other people – Dan all the time [as a solo artist and producer], me when I'm producing a record. That's what we do," Patrick Carney added. "What we wanted to accomplish with this record was make something that was fun. And something that most bands 20 years into their career don't make, which is an approachable, fun record that is also cool."

March 27, 2024 - Baltimore Key Bridge collapse
By Kathleen Magramo , Antoinette Radford, Alisha Ebrahimji , Maureen Chowdhury , Elise Hammond , Tori B. Powell and Aditi Sangal , CNN
Our live coverage of the Baltimore bridge collapse has moved here .
Here's what you should know about the Key Bridge collapse
From CNN staff
Officials recovered the bodies of two construction workers who were on Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed early Tuesday morning after a 984-foot-long cargo ship collided into a pillar.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore called the collapse Wednesday " a global crisis ."
"The national economy and the world's economy depends on the Port of Baltimore. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in the country," Moore said.
Here's what you should know:
- The victims: The six people who are presumed dead were from Mexico Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, according to Col. Roland L. Butler Jr, the superintendent of Maryland State Police. Two bodies were recovered and have been identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes from Mexico and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera from Guatemala. The two workers were filling potholes on the bridge and were later found trapped in a red pickup truck in about 25 feet of water, Butler said. The FBI is handling notifying the victims' families, Butler said.
- Recovery efforts: Authorities are pausing search efforts for the four other workers who are presumed dead, because additional vehicles are encased in concrete and other debris, making it unsafe for divers, Butler said. Once salvage operations clear the debris, divers will search for more remains, he said.
- The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the fatal incident, according to the agency's chair Jennifer Homendy. During a Wednesday news conference, Homendy said there were 21 crew members and two pilots on board the Dali cargo ship when it crashed into the bridge. She also said a senior NTSB hazmat investigator identified 56 containers of hazardous material, and that some containers are in the water. The agency received six hours of voyage data from the ship and the investigation could take 12 to 24 months to complete, Homendy said. She emphasized that NTSB will not analyze information collected or provide conclusions while on scene of the collapse.
- Looking forward: Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said rebuilding the bridge will not be "quick or easy" but that it will get done. He said there are four main focus points ahead: reopening the port, dealing with supply chain issues until its reopening, rebuilding the bridge and dealing with traffic issues until the bridge is rebuilt. Biden pledged the full support of the federal government in the response and recovery efforts. His administration has already conveyed a sense of urgency to open up federal funding to remove debris and ultimately rebuild the bridge. Maryland has submitted a request to the Biden administration for emergency relief funds "to assist in our work going forward," Moore said Wednesday.
It's almost impossible to place people on the bow of ship due to the unstable structure, fire official says
From CNN's Sarah Engel
Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said Wednesday that the cargo ship's bridge structure and containers at the bow remain unstable.
"It's going to be very difficult, if not impossible, and very dangerous, to place people on the bow of that boat right now," Wallace told CNN's Kaitlan Collins.
"Naturally, we're still very cognizant of the fact that there are hazardous materials on board the vessel itself," Wallace said, alluding to the National Transportation Safety Board saying earlier that 56 containers were carrying hazardous materials.
Wallace said his team is relying heavily on aerial recognizance, including drones. "That's the only way we're able to see in," he said.
He added that the aerial surveillance has "been able to really assure us right now we have no [chemical] reactions on board."
"It's just utter devastation," NTSB chief says of the bridge collapse site
From CNN's Aditi Sangal
Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, called the site of the Key Bridge collapse "devastating."
"It's pretty devastating, certainly, seeing not just what's going on with the cargo containers, but just looking at what was a bridge span — three bridge spans that is pretty much gone. It's just utter devastation," she said at Wednesday evening's news briefing.
She added that she is thinking of families who lost loved ones and those who are waiting to reunite with their lived ones.
NTSB interviewed the Dali's captain and some other crew members today, agency chief says
The National Transportation Safety Board has interviewed the ship's captain, his mate, the chief engineer and one other engineer today, according to Chair Jennifer Homendy.
The two pilots on board the Dali at the time of collision will be interviewed tomorrow, she added.
Cargo ship's voyage data recorder is basic when compared to an airplane's, NTSB chair says
From CNN's Tori B. Powell
The voyage data recorder on the cargo ship Dali was a "newer model" but is considered basic when compared to that on an airplane, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.
"But it is very basic compared to say, a flight data recorder, where we would have 1,000 parameters," she said at a news conference on Wednesday.
The NTSB chief investigator Marcel Muise added:
"It's not a ship-wide system recorder, so most of the sensors that are being recorded are from the bridge. So things like GPS, the audio, rudder feedback, rudder commands are recorded on there. But not engineering, the temperature of each cylinder, power distribution sensors."
There were no tug boats with Dali at the time of the collision. That's normal, NTSB chief says
There were no tugs with Dali when the cargo vessel collided with Baltimore's Key Bridge, which is normal protocol, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.
Remember: At 01:26:39 on Tuesday, Dali's pilot made a general very high frequency (VHF) radio call for tugs in the vicinity to assist, the NTSB investigator Marcel Muise had said.
"The tugs help the vessel leave the dock, leave the port and get into the main ship channel. And then they leave. Once it's on its way, it's a straight shot through the channel. So there are no tugs with the vessel at the time. So they were calling for tugs," she said.
NTSB chair says she saw some containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water
National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said she did see some of the 56 containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water.
When asked how many
When asked how many containers of hazardous materials were in the water, Homendy said:
"I did see some containers in the water, and some breached significantly on the vessel itself," she said. "I don't have an exact number, but it's something that we can provide in an update."
Homendy said that a preliminary report should be out in two to four weeks.
This post has been updated with more quotes from Homendy.
Bridge did not have any redundancy, unlike the preferred method for building bridges today, NTSB chair says
Baltimore's Key Bridge did not have any redundancy, which is included in the preferred method of building bridges in the present day, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.
"The bridge is a fracture critical," she explained. "What that means is if a member fails that would likely cause a portion of, or the entire bridge, to collapse, there's no redundancy. The preferred method for building bridges today is that there is redundancy built in, whether that's transmitting loads to another member or some sort of structural redundancy. This bridge did not have redundancy," Homendy said.
There are 17,468 fracture critical bridges in the United States out of 615,000 bridges total, she said, citing the Federal Highway Administration.
