Pleasant Dinner Cruise

A dinner cruise on the Ottawa River seemed like a great idea on one of the hotest and most humid nights in Ottawa in July. As the dining area has no air conditioning, it was pretty uncomfortable until the boat 'set sail'. Once we were moving and people had ordered and been served their drinks, most people moved outside to the open air decks. The cruises takes in the sights along the Ottawa River but there is no commentary and that was a welcome suprise. There is a live musicain on board but not obtrusive or loud. The buffet dinner is served after about an hour but nothing to rave about. The coleslaw starter was fresh and tasty and the Salmon and Pork mains were OK. These were served with wedgie potatoes and/or pasta. Desserts were apple crumble and a chocolate pudding and were OK. There was also a plate of fresh fruit. The servers were friendly and kept the tables clean and tidy. One thing to note is that there are only tables that seat 6 or 8 onboard. If you are a couple, then you will share with others and seating is arranged according to when you reserved (i.e. the early reservations get the window seats). Overall, it was a pleasant evening two and a half hours or so but is some pricey with the buffet meal and drinks purchase.

We took a lovely journey with Capital Cruises. The trip was not overly expensive ($20 per adult and a decent family rate). There were not many people on the boat, despite the fact that it was a gorgeous day. The view fromt he river was terrific, combining Parliament Hill, the Rideau Falls and the lovely vistas along the Ottawa River. The pace was leisurely and the trip felt very safe a secure. There was an historical cimmentary playing in the background -- Ottawa manages to make Canadian history extremely boring, and this was no exception --but no on was bothered by it (and no one appeared to be paying attention).

After reaing the reviews posted, we were worried but that made our experience on the Capital Cruises Sunset Dinner Cruise a pleasant surprise! Entertainment was good and staff were friendly and attentive. Food was varied and there was lots of it. Pretty good too considering it is a catered meal on a boat - not a full scale restaurant! Bathrooms were spotless. It was a lovely way to spend a hot summer evening!

We where on the Y101 last year and had a great time except for on girl that was bartending and she was very rude. But my husband and I wanted to try the sightseeing cruise and found that girl was still working there and she was just as rude! And for as the cruise it was really boring! They need to spice things up. But we did go on the other boat company and it was much better!

I had purchased tickets for me and my wife for a cruise on the Empress of Ottawa and when we arrived at the embarcation point the ship was coming in to dock but I guess something went wrong as the ship never slowed down, slammed into the dock and then made a ricochet right onto some rocks leaving the whole bow of the ship out of the water. It didn't appear like anyone on board was injured but I wouldn't be surprised if the ship needed repairs. Needless to say, we stayed for a few pictures and then immediately returned our tickets for a refund. We opted for another tour boat operator instead.

This was one of the worst tours I have been on. Very tired and uninteresting commentary. The owner and employees were rude to us and paid little attention to our needs. The owner spent most of the time yelling at employees which made us feel uncomfortable. Seek other options.

A nice cruise on the Ottawa River

The cruise was quite enjoyable. It was a warm day in August and the boat was half empty. I enjoyed the historical commentary by the personnel and the descriptions of all the landmarks in Ottawa. The crew was well versed on Ottawa. My entire family enjoyed the stop along the Rideau Falls to take pictures.

Took the cruise on a very hot and humid afternoon and paid $22/person. Here's why I liked this 1.25hr trip: you see capital hill, parliament building, supreme court, 24 and Sussex from a unique vantage point. I loved the views from the water and this is the only way to take those lovely photos. On a really hot day, you can sit inside on one of two indoor decks and enjoy some shade and breeze. The captain takes the boat right into the mist of the Rideau River falls - and pauses to allow you lots of time to take photos. There is live commentary which is informative and all staff were polite. This is a large boat so you can walk around either inside or out, get photos from the front or back and just sit back and relax. A great break in the day. The boat leaves from a very convenient location - at the base of the Rideau Canal locks between the Chateau Laurier and Parliament. There are lots of steps... so if there are mobility challenges, this might be difficult. Improvements can be made - the cruise was a little shorter than the time listed, the boat is very basic in the tables, chairs and amenities, you stop at another dock for 10 minutes to pick-up/drop off people (its really no big deal), and the initial taped-introduction commentary could not be heard at all - too bad because I wanted to listen. If you really can't manage to take the boat tour of the Ottawa River, try to get photos from the Portage bridge. A solid 3.5. I'll post photos for you when I get a chance.

I was reading some of the comments about Capital Cruises and am happy to see that the company has made large improvements to its service. I have enjoyed the live commentary that they now offer, loved the bar service, and have found the staff to be very polite.

I tried this cruise with a friend who was visiting from the UK and was very disappointed. The commentary is boring, the cruise itself doesn't cover as much as Paul's Boat Cruises (which I tried last year) and then it stops on the Quebec side for about 15 minutes of the cruise, supposedly to pick up passengers, during which time you inhale the fumes of the boat and listen to the traffic on the nearby bridge. I was not impressed at all. Try Paul's Boat Cruises, much better value for your money.

Whether it’s a sightseeing tour, a sunset dinner cruise or a leisurely canoe ride, floating on the water is a fun and enjoyable way to spend a sunny summer day. The Best River Cruises In North America You Have To Try

Posted: December 11, 2023 | Last updated: December 11, 2023

Love the thought of a boat-based exploration of North America but don’t fancy heading out to sea? We recommend exploring its rivers and lakes instead, which is why we’ve taken a closer look at the best river and lake cruises for anyone keen to gain a fascinating new perspective on America’s inland waterways.

Rolling on the river

It’s never too early to start planning a Christmas markets cruise, and as much as we love the ones in Germany and Austria, nothing beats a festive float down the Mississippi. Highlights on this cruise, which snakes from Memphis to New Orleans, include stop-offs at Natchez, whose many historic buildings are festooned with Christmas lights, and Vicksburg, whose independent boutiques are great places to pick up presents. This is also a great cruise for twitchers – a huge number of bird species flock to this stretch of the Mississippi for winter.

Love this?
Say hello to one of America’s most spectacular lake cruises. Your mode of transport for this sail across Lake Tahoe will be the M.S Dixie II – the lake’s biggest boat. The sunset dinner cruises are popular with couples, although we recommend the scenic daytime tours, which are a great way to explore North America’s largest alpine lake. This high-altitude body of water spreads into two states (California and Nevada), contains enough water to cover California with 14 inches of water and is deeper than the Empire State Building is tall.

If crowded cruise liners and transatlantic crossings don’t appeal, consider this leisurely sail along Canada’s 14-kilometre (8.7-mile) Lachine Canal, which slices through the southern section of Montréal, a city famous for its historic architecture. You’ll gain a wonderful insight into the construction of this historic waterway as you pass through its locks, and you’ll also enjoy fantastic views of Montréal’s skyline. Your mode of transport is rather special too – a carbon-neutral, zero-pollution electric propulsion boat.

Tour details

Experience the sights & tunes that best represent the city while onboard Ottawa River Queen. Bringing to you Dueling Pianos Ottawa on the water featuring an endless series of classic hits spanning decades of music as you cruise on the Iconic River. The Duelling Pianos are Tyler Kealey and Dave Kalil on two sets of ivory keys, with guitarist Todd Huckabone acting as referee. Playing a blend of requests from the audience, blistering guitar and piano solos, three part harmonies, and random comedic impromptu moments, their show has won over the crowds they perform for time after time.

While enjoying the wonderful show, take in the notable landmarks including the Parliament Hill, Museum of History, Prime Minister house, and more on a double decker 19th century paddle steamer across the Iconic Ottawa River. Enjoy wine, beer, and other beverages from our full-service bar. We look forward to welcoming you onboard.
