“I believe it was Maya Angelou who said ‘The only thing people are going to remember is how you make them feel.’ We want you to feel precious and priceless because you are significant and meaningful … It’s important to validate and celebrate you.”

Carlos Santana sure knew how to make his crowd feel welcome Friday night in Atlantic City, as the Latin rock luminary’s “1001 Rainbows” tour visited Hard Rock Live at the Etess Arena , jamming for two hours as fans shimmied in the aisles.

Last night in Newark, New Jersey, guitar icon Carlos Santana and his beloved band kicked off their 1001 Rainbows Tour at the Prudential Center. The trek is set to extend all summer long until he returns to the House of Blues in Las Vegas for another installment of his on-going residency. Until then, select cities across North American are getting treated to the Santana experience.

The GRAMMY® Award-winning guitarist strolled onto the stage amidst his band, shrouded in a hazy mist with his signature PRS gold top slung over his snakeskin jacket. They launched into “Soul Sacrifice,” the outgoing track from the group’s 1969 debut LP. Clocking in at nearly seven minutes, Santana and company tore through the track with calculated precision. The epic jam put the talents of each and every band member on full display, reinforcing the group’s legend.

“Jin-Go-Lo Ba” highlighted the band’s talented rhythm section with some killer percussion, and the hit “Oye Cómo Va” felt as good as it always does. They kept the hits coming, following it up with “Evil Ways” and their cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Black Magic Woman” which Santana made even more famous.

Next, they treated fans to a nice medley of covers, comprised of “She’s Not There” (The Zombies), “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” (The Undisputed Truth, made famous by The Temptations), and In-A Gadda-Da-Vida” (Iron Butterfly). Towards the end of the set, Santana pulled out two hits from the record-shattering album Supernatural – “Maria Maria” and “Put Your Lights On.” Both tracks featured dazzling, gutsy guitar work from Carlos.

With the crowd wanting a bit more, Santana returned to the stage for an encore that started with a cover of The Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues.” It felt a bit out of the band’s wheelhouse at first, but they made it their own. A masterful drum solo from Cindy Blackman Santana left the audience in awe, before the group launched into the multi-platinum smash “Smooth” to close out the evening.

Santana’s 1001 Rainbows Tour rolls on through August 6, wrapping up at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Santana’s Indelible Performance at Pine Knob for the 1001 Rainbows Tour

santana rainbow tour review

Clarkston,Michigan (June 30,2023)- On a warm and humid Thursday night at the iconic Pine Knob Amphitheatre, guitar virtuoso Carlos Santana took the stage once again, nearly a year to the day after his frightening collapse during a performance at the same venue in 2022. With an array of classic hits, mesmerizing guitar solos and a music catalog dating back to the late 1960′, Santana delivered a performance that would transcend his nearly six decade career and one that his most devote fans would classify as career defining.

Now at a sprite 75 years old, Santana is one of a dwindling number of remaining groups or performers who played the legendary Woodstock Festival in 1969. The band’s incendiary performance at the event later broke to a much wider audience in the movie that has been credited with being “The Big Break” for the performer. Fifty plus years later, Santana still plays with the same voracity as he did back at Max Yasgur’s farm, but with a more subdued approach that still incites the same reaction from his fans as it did on that historical July day.

The 1001 Rainbows Tour, Santanas latest endeavor, hit the stage at 8:05 P.M. with an explosive rendition of “Soul Sacrifice,” the last song off his 1969 self titled debut album. A full instrumental cut that features a scintillating rhythmic three chord progression, energized the sold out venue from the first guitar lick and was a perfect segue into “Jin-go-lo-ba” a groove-laden burner that let the percussionists stretch their legs, immersing the crowd into Santana’s signature blend of Latin rock and soulful guitar-centric melodies. The band effortlessly transitioned into the timeless classics “Evil Ways” and “Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen,” captivating the audience with their seamless musicality. In what is now quickly becoming the new “norm,” Thursdays show was front-packed with Santanas biggest and best-known hits from 1969 debut Santana and follow-up Abraxas. Also the early start was a text book a case of the old adage “you snooze you lose,” meaning if you were not in your seat at the scheduled start time you missed probably one of the most potent opening  runs of a concert in quite some time as no special guest was scheduled as a opener in the Motor City.

As the night progressed, the band maintained their potent energy, effortlessly moving from one hit to another. “No One to Depend On” and “Right On/Umi Says” showcased the band’s versatility, with each member contributing their unique talent to create a harmonious and powerful sound. As Santana doesn’t sing lead himself, vocal duties were split between the bassist and two utility singer/players, who would often trade off as they did on “Everybody’s Everything,” which featured a smoking dexterous break from the bassist and drummer Cindy Blackman, who is also Carlos Santana’s wife. A soulful and emotive “Put Your Lights On” demonstrated Santana’s ability to touch the hearts of his listeners, while “Corazon Espinado” and “Maria Maria” transported the audience to a realm of rhythmic and soulful bliss.

Santana and his eight-piece band ventured into uncharted territory with the inclusion of “Foo Foo,” off the 2002 album Shaman. A lively and energy laden composition that infused elements of Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz. The track injected an invigorating sense of experimentation, highlighting Santana’s constant willingness to push the boundaries of his music.

The concert reached its pinnacle during its multi-song encore, where Santana treated the crowd to a mesmerizing medley of “Toussai y l’ouverture” along with a captivating extended drum solo by Cindy Blackmon that left jaws dropping in awe. The energy, palpable throughout the 2-hour performance, surged with a sensational cover of  The Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues,” infused with Santana’s unique Latin flair. The performance then transitioned seamlessly into the powerful anthem “Love, Peace, and Happiness,” reminding us all of the enduring message of unity that Santana has championed throughout his career.

santana rainbow tour review

Santana finished the evening off  with as much energy and emotion as he began with, performing the mega-hit “Smooth.” The unmistakable opening guitar riff resonated through the venue, instantly igniting a collective surge of emotion from the amazingly still packed venue. Santana’s supporting soulful vocals intertwined with the band’s dynamic instrumentation, created an irresistible synergy that had the crowd singing along with unbridled enthusiasm. As the evenings performance concluded, it became evident that Santana’s legacy as a guitar virtuoso and a transcendent musical force continues to flourish. With his uncanny ability to seamlessly blend genres, unwavering dedication to his craft and his indomitable spirit, Santana once again solidified his status as a true icon of rock music.

The Santana 1001 Rainbows Tour at Pine Knob was an extraordinary musical experience that will undoubtedly be etched in the memories of all those fortunate enough to witness it. Santana and his band mesmerized the audience with their impeccable musicianship, unwavering passion, and a setlist that celebrated Santana’s timeless hits. As tight as the band is, Santana makes it a point to step back and gave each a moment in the spotlight to demonstrate their own virtuosity, showcasing an intuitive connection that only comes from years of collaboration. Likewise, Santana’s guitar solos were nothing short of breathtaking, transporting the audience on a sonic journey that traversed decades and served as a testament to the legacy Carlos Santana has created for himself and the musicians that have been fortunate to play live with him. Tonights performance was delivered with a level of passion and soul equal to the legendary sonic charge of his guitar, a sound that is one of the world’s best-known musical signatures. For more than five decades—from Santana’s earliest days as a groundbreaking Afro-Latin-blues-rock fusion outfit in San Francisco—Carlos has been the visionary force behind the artistry that transcends musical genres and generational, cultural, and geographical boundaries and unites cultural indifferences with his music worldwide.

Thank you Carlos Santana. Hopefully we can all do it again next year.

Santana is backed by a world class set of artists including Cindy Blackman Santana. She is not only a kick ass drummer and percussionist she is also Carlos Santana’s wife. Cindy did a long and very intricate drum solo that was well received by the audience.

2 thoughts on “ santana announces 2023 summer tour ”.

How come he’s not coming to Colorado love to hear to see him once more

Saw him with EWF last August in Atlanta. It was the best concert I’ve seen in years. EWF was fully charged and have incorporated young talent into the band and they were GREAT. Santana was GREAT as expected with videos giving recognition to his African roots and how Africa is the birth of rhythms. I could go see them again before I go.

Thanks EWF & Santana

CARLOS SANTANA ANNOUNCES '1001 RAINBOWS' TOUR

PRPhotos.com

Carlos Santana has announced he will hit the road with his band across North America this summer for the "1001 Rainbows Tour." Throughout, "Santana will perform high-energy, passion-filled songs from their 50-year career, including fan favorites from Woodstock to Supernatural and beyond."

Santana will wrap up the "Blessings And Miracles Tour" at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on May 4th followed by dates in Dallas and Houston, Texas before kicking off the "1001 Rainbows Tour" at Newark, New Jersey's Prudential Center on June 21st. The 14-date "Rainbows" trek will wrap on August 6th at Springfield, Massachusetts' MassMutual Center.

We asked Carlos Santana if there was any advice he would offer up to aspiring musicians today:  ["Don't pay attention to the business. Pay attention to life. People need water. People need air. People need music. And if you're a good musician, if you play piano at Nordstrom's and they  fire  you because nobody buys anything when you're playing, because they're all looking at you? ( laughter ) — that's a badge of honor ( laughter )."] SOUNDCUE  (:20 OC: . . . badge of honor)

Santana Brings The “1001 Rainbow Tour” to Canandaigua, NY

On June 22, 2023 the multi award-winning / Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Santana performed at CMAC in Canandaigua, NY. CMAC was one of the lucky venues to get a visit from his current, limited 16 date “1001 Rainbows Tour”. The partially enclosed outdoor venue was slowly filling in with fans, of all ages, eager to see the legend perform. For this tour stop, Santana was the only band performing. The band played a 20 song set for about 2 hours. At the start of the show there were over 7,000 fans in attendance.

santana rainbow tour review

With an 8 pm start, giant video screens lit up with a cool video of the Aurora Borealis. Smoke shot up from the back of the stage, under a purple glow from the lights. Nine band members slowly took their places on the stage. They started the show with “Soul Sacrifice” while the video screens are playing scenes from Santana's original Woodstock performance and clips of happy, smiling people from all over the world. For those who weren't on their feet already, they surely were for the next 4 songs. Playing “Jingo”, “Evil Ways", “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye Como Va", the band was on fire! The soon to be 76 year old Santana played seemingly agelessly on the guitar. His classic sound was on point and the backing band was incredible and played extremely tight. Next up was “Everybody’s Everything”. At the end of the song was an awesome bass solo from Benny Rietveld, showcasing his incredible talents, the crowd went wild. Slowing it down Santana had a message before the next song. Here is a snippet,” You have to ignite yourself with enthusiasm. You can’t shake hands with a fist, you have to open up. To open up, you have to be willing, you have to be willing to let go of stupid shit. Let go of fear…Let go of that. We wish you good health, wealth and peace of mind, and joy” breaking into “Europa”. Sprinkled over the next four songs of, “Batuka”, “No One To Depend On”, “Right On/Umi Says' ' and “Yaleo”, Santana wanted to deliver a point. “Stop shootings, stop suicides”, “We are honored to be on this planet”, “I want to make a difference”, “We are priceless and precious” and lastly “Go home, believe in your possibilities, after you smoke weed and drink tequila” as he chuckles sending the fans wildly cheering. Taking the lead vocals for “Put Your Lights On” was guitarist, Tommy Anthony. The whole venue was lit up with cell phones swaying back and forth to the music. This was a cool moment to see. After “Corazon Espinado”, Andy Vargas yells “Everybody put your hands in the air”, the house lights came on, “Let’s hear it for Carlos Santana”! The fans erupt in a cheer and Santana begins the sweet acoustic beginning to “Maria Maria”. The energy and emotion are building in the band while playing the next two songs “Foo Foo” and “ Toussaint L’ Overture”. While hard to beat that energy, Cindy Blackman Santana gave it a shot with a 5-minute epic drum solo! A highlight for me was the overhead camera shots of her playing. She was switching techniques of holding the sticks while her hands were flying around the kit. Close-ups of her footwork on the double bass drum pedals were impressive. She got a standing ovation for her solo! The next song was “Roadhouse Blues” and the band was having a good time on stage. A large moth flew up on stage and bassist Benny playful pretended to shoot it down with his bass while his bandmates laughed at the sight. Winding down the show was “Love, Peace and Happiness” and the ever-popular “Smooth”. The band turned up a notch and had the entire venue up on their feet dancing and singing along. After a career spanning more than 50 years, Santana still has ..."It"!

Santana's Blessings And Miracles: successfully continuing the search for singers

Santana's back with blessings and miracles and he’s brought some new friends with him. and rob thomas.

Santana: Blessings And Miracles cover art

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

It’s curious how much of Carlos Santana ’s near 60-year career has been quietly devoted to accommodating his inability to sing. Permanent Santana vocalists came and went, but by 1992’s disastrous Milagro , the game seemed to be up for a guitarist without any clear plan to move forwards.

Enter mogul Clive Davis, who hit upon the notion that Santana’s majestic, distinctive guitar – there really is nobody quite like him – could underpin albums featuring a smorgasbord of singers, some well-known, some not, and rebuild his career. The result was 1999’s Supernatural . It went platinum in the US… 15 times.

The new approach was not conducive to touring and Santana tried to wriggle out of it on albums such as the Rick Rubin -produced Africa Speaks , but sales speak for themselves, hence Blessings And Miracles – his first collaborations set since 2014’s Corazon. It features a stellar cast, including Matchbox 20’s Rob Thomas on the delicious Move , which resembles Supernatural ’s breakthrough, Thomas-sung Smooth in more than name.

The blessing and curse of the master guitarist and carefully selected guest singer formula is that it works. The heaviest tracks of a surprisingly rocking outing find Santana sounding more energised than he has in years.

America For Sale features Death Angel singer Marc Osegueda growling over a ferocious guitar dual between Santana and Metallica ’s Kirk Hammett, while Living Colour’s Corey Glover whips up a tsunami of fury on Peace Power (or ‘black power’ as he sings), but Santana matches him note for thrilling note.

Elsewhere, there’s new life breathed into, of all things, A Whiter Shade Of Pale . Steve Winwood offers a gloriously understated white-soul vocal reminiscent of Higher Love , while Santana’s guitar pyrotechnics sizzle. Supernatural ’s Maria Maria showed Santana’s guitar enhances hip-hop, and here She’s Fire repeats the trick with the golden-throated G-Eazy.

Of the instrumentals, Santana Celebration is a blistering romp; Song For Cindy (as in Cindy Blackman Santana, Carlos’s drummer wife) is Albatross in excelsis, while Chick Corea (who died in February) and Corea’s wife Gayle bring jazz fusion intricacy to Angel Choir/All Together .

The shock of the new helped Supernatural elevate Santana to a new level. Much as though the Carlos Santana who made Abraxas all those years ago might chafe at the very suggestion, collaboration with outside singers has turned out to be what he does best.

If only he could sing, though…

John Aizlewood

As well as Classic Rock, John Aizlewood currently writes for The Times, The Radio Times, The Sunday Times, The i Newspaper, The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph and Mojo amongst others.  He’s written four books and appears on television quite often.
