Armenia Signs Arms Contract With France: Defence Ministers

France signed commitments to sell precision rifles to Armenia and train Armenian military officers, their defence ministers said Friday, as Yerevan seeks to reduce its dependence on Moscow.

Armenia signed a contract with French arms manufacturer PGM to buy the guns, its defence minister Suren Papikian told a news conference in Yerevan alongside his French counterpart Sebastien Lecornu.

Armenia has been looking to bolster its defences in recent years as fighting has broken out with neighbouring Azerbaijan.

"Armenia has adopted the idea of modernising the army, we are going to use our own means and the help of partner states," Papikian said.

"It's about being able to use all the tools of peace to defend our borders."

They did not disclose the value of the deal.

The countries also signed an agreement for France to train five Armenian soldiers at its Saint Cyr Coetquidan military academy and offered also to help train non-commissioned officers.

Lecornu confirmed that France would deploy a military adviser specialising in ground-based air defence systems to help Armenia defend itself against "possible strikes by potential aggressors" against civilians.

Armenia "is turning to partners who really provide security," Lecornu said, in response to a question about frayed relations between Yerevan and Moscow -- its historic ally.

Lecornu travelled to Yerevan on Thursday evening with members of parliament and defence industry representatives.

The visit comes amid a growing rift between the Soviet-era master Moscow and Yerevan, which has grown angry with the Kremlin over its perceived inaction on Armenia's long-running confrontation with Azerbaijan.

In October 2023, France announced the sale of defence equipment to Armenia, provoking anger from Azerbaijan.

The deal was announced weeks after Baku seized the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh from Armenian separatists.

France, home to a large Armenian diaspora, has played a mediating role in the decades-long conflict over control of Karabakh, whose recapture by Azerbaijan led to the exodus of some 100,000 Armenians.

Early Safari Arms--MS Safari Arms, Pre Olympic Arms?

Hello, I've searched every thread on the forum mentioning Safari Arms, found a few posts about the early guns when they were being made by Don McNabb. Does anyone have any info about these early guns? Were they forged, cast, or just parts guns? What little I've read of the McNabb guns has either been they were amazing, handbuilt guns or total crap. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Heekma  

I have a Safari Arms frame that I have had for many years. I have no complaint about it. No idea whether cast or forged. Their top of the line was the Matchmaster. It was advertised with an accuracy guarantee. The company was one of the first to offer popular options for combat style shooting. I have no idea about parts suppliers but I would guess a lot was surplus military.  

I picked up a Safari Arms/ Colt at a show for a good price but it turned into a project gun. It had a cracked bbl bushing, bad sear trigger- would double, the firing pin stop was battered enough that the firing pin was stuck. I had some parts and bought some and got it running. Currently the slide stop and safety have been robbed for another .45 project but as soon as I can replace the parts I will put the SA parts back. I do like the pistol, it's an odd duck like my Detonics and Webley .45s.

Pretty sure the old ones were cast. Also pretty sure that Olympic bought the molds when they bought the company, because all the Olympic guns were cast as well.  

I built my first IPSC pistol on an MS SAFARI ARMS frame....not the Olympic version as picture in this tread. This would have been in the 1980’s.There are marked differences and the MS was much finer in machining, cleaner in forging, and fit the hand better than the Olympic ones did. IMO they are a forging and the Olympic ones a casting. I can take some pictures if you’d like!  

My M-S Safari "Enforcer" model had a cast frame. You could see imperfections / pinholes in its surface. In all honesty it was pure junk. The recoil spring assembly was a joke. I got rid of that one but kept my Olympic / Safari Arms Cohort and Matchmaster models. Olympic Arms did a lot better in the quality control department IMHO.  

I think it was all cast, including barrels. When Olympic was an ongoing concern, "they" had a large display at a local gunshow, with complete 1911s, AR uppers, parts, etc. One show, there were a dozen or more Tupperware containers full of barrels with external defects that were clearly castings. It was a bit surprising, but Detonics used cast barrels, too.  

Michael Meacham, Production Control Supervisor and Senior Gunsmith for M-S Safari Arms 1978-84, The first several runs of Safari Arms frames were made by Essex, with the protrusion between the fingers, the extension for the trigger guard, and the boss for the front checkering welded on and shaped by hand and with a mill. They were hand checkered. Once the mold for the frame was made, they were investment cast by Dolphin, a subsidieary of Ping golf clubs. the checkering was cast in. The threaded barrel bushing, beavertail grip safety, ambidextrous safety, front recoil spring plug, hammer and slide stop were cast by Dolphin also. The slides after the first several hundred, were investment cast also. Early guns had surplus or aftermarket parts, but later guns had Colt sears and dis-connectors, extractors, and Pachmyre msinspring housings and grips. Barrels were turned to fit the bushing and throated and beveled. Slides were ported. Lugs were welded and cut to fit each gun. Matchmasters would hold 5 shots in 1" at 50 yards, and triggers were hand fit to 4.5 lbs. or less. Every gun was test fired 50 rounds. The Enforcer had a 4" barrel and a contained recoil system. Both models used a square wire spring after the first few batches. The Enforcer was subject to stovepiping if you limp wristed it, as its action was fairly snappy and energy wasted on moving the shooter's arm, robbed energy needed to cycle the action. A firm grip would prevent that. The first several batches had S&W K frame rear sights.
