Review: Guns N’ Roses, Partly Reunited, in Its First Arena Performance

guns and roses world tour 2016

By Jon Pareles

  • April 9, 2016

LAS VEGAS — “You like my, my furniture?” the singer W. Axl Rose asked the screaming crowd at the T-Mobile Arena here on Friday night. He was on a throne made from guitars and amps, lent by Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, where he could keep his injured left foot immobile.

It was the first night of an arena and festival tour by the partly reunited Guns N’ Roses, which brings Mr. Rose together with two of the band’s other founding members — Slash (Saul Hudson) on lead guitar and Duff McKagan on bass — for the first time since the mid-1990s. Since then there have been insults, recriminations, lawsuits and a takeover of the Guns N’ Roses brand by Mr. Rose, who has toured and recorded with sidemen for two decades. The Not in This Lifetime Tour, as the band has called it, was a reunion significant enough to make Guns N’ Roses the Saturday night headliner at the Coachella festival on April 16 and 23.

During an April 1 preview show for 500 people at the Los Angeles club the Troubadour , which helped propel the band to fame in the 1980s, Mr. Rose fell off the stage and broke a bone in his foot — thus the throne for a month of recuperation. Unexpected as it was, the injury only clinched the point of the reunion. It is different — both fraught and familiar — playing with peers who invented a band sound and sidemen trying to recreate it. Unable to strut and shimmy across the stage as the frontman he has been for so long, Mr. Rose had to rely on the songs themselves and share the spotlight, perhaps more than he expected.

He made every effort. Singing from the throne, he pumped out the beat with his right leg and gesticulated with both arms. Using crutches or a wheelchair, he also periodically headed backstage during instrumentals for costume changes that barely mattered: studded leather jackets and assorted hats, T-shirts, bandannas and sunglasses. He has set aside the unfortunate fashion choices, like cornrows and hockey jerseys, of his recent tours; he also omitted the onstage rants that once punctuated the band’s more indulgent shows.

Meanwhile, in every riff and solo, Slash — with no wardrobe changes — confirmed how much he brought to the band at its peak. Mr. Rose’s latter-day lineups have featured guitarists who were technically accomplished but cold. Slash could match their speed — as he proved in “Chinese Democracy,” a song recorded without him — but his phrasing was songful even in his many flashy stretches, hinting at, among many others, Carlos Santana, Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix (whom he quoted a few times). Guns N’ Roses is a 1980s band that never repudiated the 1960s.

When songs made room for jams, there were improvisatory sparks between Slash and Mr. McKagan, still pushing each other, stirring up dynamics. The band on stage in Las Vegas also included, on keyboards, Dizzy Reed, who has stayed with Mr. Rose since 1990, along with two more recent sidemen, Richard Fortus on guitar and Frank Ferrer on drums, and a second keyboard player, Melissa Reese. Slash, Mr. McKagan and Mr. Fortus swaggered and twirled all over the stage, rambunctiously compensating for Mr. Rose’s fixed position.

Guns N’ Roses made only one indelible album: its first one, “Appetite for Destruction,” in 1987. The band was already fracturing when it released a pair of uneven albums, “Use Your Illusion” I and II, in 1991. The next (and most recent) Guns N’ Roses studio album with original songs would be the overcooked “Chinese Democracy” in 2008, made by Mr. Rose with numerous sidemen .

Many Guns N’ Roses songs came out of a very particular milieu, but their chemistry of bravado and trauma reached tens of millions of listeners. The music united Hollywood glam-rock and 1980s metal with punk’s speed and ferocity, yet still maintained a connection to the blues. The lyrics portrayed a Los Angeles “jungle” populated with wounded, messed-up strivers and awash in drugs and sex: characters embodied in Mr. Rose’s yowling, rasping, screeching vocals, keeping all sentiment at bay by staying reckless and deliberately abrasive. Now, there is more self-preservation in his performance; he allows himself some clear-voiced high crooning and saves his most throat-tearing howls for peak moments.

The two-and-a-half-hour set included songs from all three decades of the band’s catalog — including some, like “Estranged,” “Civil War” and “Patience,” that took on new meanings when performed by the reunited band. Seven of the 12 songs on “Appetite for Destruction” were in the set. So was “Double Talkin’ Jive,” a song credited solely to a band founder absent from the reunion, Izzy Stradlin . Guns N’ Roses prefaced its grandiose hit ballad “November Rain” with the instrumental second half of “Layla” by Derek and the Dominos, the obvious model for the former song’s guitar-hero finale. It also revived a magnum opus from 1991 — ”Coma,” a battle between death wish and survival instinct, rugged riff and psychedelic aspiration — that was as tumultuous as it deserved to be.

There is nostalgia at any reunion concert — and unanswered questions about backstage tensions. Guns N’ Roses isn’t, and can’t be, the 1980s band that was creating itself out of shared, desperate ambition. And there was no new material at this concert. But the band sounded strong enough and united enough to hope there will be.

An earlier version of this review the given name of a keyboardist for Guns N’ Roses on this tour. She is Melissa Reese, not Melinda. The review also misstated the number of songs on the album “Appetite for Destruction.” There are 12, not 11.

Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose has commented on recent reunion rumours by insisting that the “only thing confirmed” is his love of US fast-food chain Taco Bell.

The “Paradise City” singer is reportedly set to headline Coachella in April with the band’s original members, including lead guitarist Slash, before embarking on a world tour. It would be Rose and Slash’s first time on stage together since 1993.

Guns N’ Roses fans have been celebrating after Billboard announced that “various inside sources” had confirmed the news as true, but there is yet to be an official statement.

Rose is the first bandmate to have his say, tweeting early this morning:

He will appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live next week to discuss the speculation, according to Rolling Stone. It is expected that the hotly-awaited confirmation will be saved until then when he can talk about it in person.

Reports first began circulating after Guns N’ Roses started selling merchandise featuring their iconic guns-wrapped-in-roses logo, with bandmates separately hinting that they were ready to reform.

Best Band Reunions

In the last week, the band’s Facebook page has been updated with a cover photo of a live crowd, their official website shows the logo and a video of “Welcome to the Jungle” playing over clips of dancing crowds has been showing before screenings of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Slash recently said that there is no longer any “animosity” between himself and Rose after the pair’s long-standing feud. “Over time we all just got sick and tired of the black cloud,” he told CBS News. “The biggest thing that happens when you have a break-up that is less than harmonious is you build up a bad energy because of the distance. The bad feelings get exaggerated.”

To date, Guns N’ Roses have sold more than 100 million albums worldwide.

Flashback: Guns N’ Roses Officially Launch 2016 Reunion Tour in Las Vegas

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Guns N’ Roses rolled out yet another leg of their reunion tour earlier this week that will bring them to stadiums across North America throughout the summer. They downgraded to arenas in America after the first leg of the tour in 2016, and filling 60,000 seat venues might seem like a tough task at this point, but they must have reason to think that the demand remains this high.

Amazingly, this will be the 14th leg of the tour. By this point, they’ve hit just about every place on the planet where they could conceivably play, including Malaysia, Taiwan, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, and Indonesia. They’re going to Central America for the second time next month and Europe for the third time in May. If promoters start booking concerts on the moon, Antarctica, or man-made islands along the coast of China, they’ll probably play there, too.

The reunion informally began with a quick show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles on April 1st, 2016. Just a few songs into the night, Axl Rose broke his left foot while thrashing about the stage. When the tour officially began at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas just a week later, he was confined to a throne created by Dave Grohl when the Foo Fighters leader broke his leg the previous year. It was hardly the ideal way to kick off one of the most anticipated reunion tours in rock history, but with Coachella coming up later that month, the band had no other choice.

Here’s video of “Welcome to the Jungle” from that show in Las Vegas. Many fans pointed out that with Rose unable to run around the stage and exhaust himself, he sounded better than he had in years. At this point, nobody knew if the reunion would flame out after just a few more shows. After all, Rose had spent the previous 23 years ripping Slash to part in the press, even calling him a “cancer” at one point. He also had a bad history of showing up very late to concerts and causing chaos.

Against all odds, close to four years later, Rose hasn’t been late to a single show. There also hasn’t been even a tiny glimpse of tension with Slash or anyone else in the band. It’s amazing how pulling in hundreds of millions of dollars can mend relationships. The show has also grown a lot since that night in Las Vegas, with covers like “Black Hole Sun” and “Wichita Lineman” entering the set list along alongside rarities like “Shadow of Your Love” and “Locomotive,” and even the Velvet Revolver song “Slither.”

Guns N’ Roses haven’t announced any fun surprises for this next leg of the tour, like a complete performance of Appetite for Destruction or appearances by former members Steven Adler and Izzy Stradlin. They also haven’t released a note of new music despite numerous interviews where they promise they’re working on an album. But if this tour has proven anything, it’s that a band can just tour forever and ever on their hits and people will keep coming. We look forward to legs 15, 16, 17, and beyond. Maybe in 2026, they can do a 10-year anniversary tour of the reunion tour.

Guns N’ Roses Wrap ‘Not in This Lifetime… Tour’: $584 Million; 5.4 Million Tickets

Guns N' Roses wrapped the "Not In This Lifetime... Tour" with $584 million, making it the third-highest grossing tour of all time.

By Eric Frankenberg

Eric Frankenberg

Guns N Roses

After more than three years and 158 concerts, Guns N’ Roses ‘ Not in This Lifetime… Tour has come to a close. And, the final numbers are in: $584.2 million grossed from 5,371,891 tickets sold across six continents’ worth of shows. The tour, which began in 2016, concludes as the No. 3 highest-grossing tour in the history of Billboard Boxscore. GNR is represented by UTA’s Ken Fermaglich and ITB’s Rod MacSween. The tour was promoted by Live Nation. Guns N’ Roses are managed by Fernando Lebeis and Team Brazil Management.

The tour reunited Guns N’ Roses members Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan, who — before reconvening in 2016, hadn’t played a show together since 1993.

After warming up at the 500-capacity The Troubadour in West Hollywood, Calif. on April 1, 2016, a newly reunited Guns N’ Roses gave an unofficial kick-off to the Not in This Lifetime… Tour with two shows at the then-newly opened T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The April 8-9, 2016 concerts sold out at 28,889 tickets and a blistering $7.3 million gross according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. Three-and-a-half years and six continents later, GNR returned to Vegas to wrap their sprawling global trek with two final shows at The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace on Nov. 2-3.

Slash Says Guns N' Roses Have 'Already Started Working on Stuff' For New Album

From 2016 to 2019, GNR maintained a busy schedule, maximizing their global potential with trips around the world. The tour was rooted in North America, with 87 of 158 shows (55%) taking place in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. But there were also multiple visits to Europe (31 shows), Asia (16) and South America (15), plus eight dates in Australia and one in Johannesburg, South Africa.

With more time in North America, the band was able to play a more even mix of stadiums and arenas, as opposed to quicker runs of only stadiums internationally. Their home-continent touring amounted to $258.5 million and 2.3 million tickets sold, still far ahead of Europe’s $166.1 million.

The tour’s top performing engagements are representative of the band’s global approach. They broke $10 million on five separate engagements throughout the run (London; East Rutherford, N.J.; Tallinn, Estonia; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Sao Paulo, Brazil). Similarly, they eclipsed 100,000 tickets on four occasions (London; Mexico City; Buenos Aires; East Rutherford). The London Stadium shows on June 16-17, 2017 were the highlights of the tour on both accounts, with a $17.7 million gross and a paid attendance tally of 140,877.

ACL Music Festival 2019: Guns N' Roses, King Princess & Local Fusionists Conquer Day One

The Not in This Lifetime… Tour marked the first time that Axl Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan played together since the 1993 Use Your Illusion Tour and their reunion proved the power of the band’s classic lineup.  On a per-show basis, the band leveled up from an average gross of $617,000 on the 2012-14 Appetite for Democracy Tour to $3.7 million each night on the Not in This Lifetime… Tour.

Fans may have thought a reunion (much less a reunion that has lasted three years so far) was impossible but at the close of the decade, here we are: Guns N’ Roses mounted the third most successful tour of all time, closing with a string of sold-out shows in the trek’s fourth and final year.

Spice Girls, 1994-2001 This gang of British women burst onto the scene with "Girl Power" in 1994 as the answer to the growing field of boy bands. The group personas were Posh (Victoria Beckham), Baby (Emma Bunton), Ginger (Geri Halliwell), Scary (Melanie Brown), and Sporty (Melanie Chisholm). Their debut single "Wannabe" hit the airwaves in 1996 and topped the charts for weeks. But in 1998, Geri Halliwell quit the uber-successful girl group in and the band's musical efforts soon fizzled out. The girls split soon after, but still made headlines: Posh married British soccer star David Beckham and went on to become A-List Royalty; Halliwell put out a solo album; Bunton became a mom; and Mel B. had a very public paternity dispute with Eddie Murphy.

The Fugees, 1994-1997The hip hop trio from New Jersey - Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel - hit the music scene in the mid-1990s and quickly won popular and critical acclaim with the the album "The Score," which went platinum and earned the group two Grammy awards in 1997. Unfortunately, their success was all too brief as they broke up that same year.

At the time Jimmy Page suggested the band could start working on new material. Since 2009, the band has been sparring with the press over their reunion, often citing Robert Plant's departure and the fact that they were unable to find a replacement as the reason they would never get back together.

The Faces epitomized rock 'n' roll in the early 1970s. When Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood joined forces with the Small Faces' Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones, the band created hits like 'Stay With Me,' 'Cindy Incidentally' and 'Pool Hall Richard.' After the band split up in 1975, Stewart went on to enjoy a hugely succesful solo career and Wood joined the Rolling Stones. Ronnie Lane died of multiple sclerosis in 1997.

Reformed: 2007The group has had several reunions - first Hagar came back in 2004 to help the band launch a "best of" album. Then he left again. Roth returned in 2006 and the band began a North American tour in 2007. While plans for new music have only been hinted at, the Van Halen News Desk reports that Van Halen's 2007 reunion tour was the highest grossing tour in the band's history.

On June 15th, the group performed during a secret gig at London's Brick Lane to celebrate the release of their new compilation, 'Midlife: A Beginners guide to Blur'. The band also headlined several music festivals, including Oxegen 2009, T in the Park and Glastonbery.

The Police, 1977-1984British trio The Police hit the music scene as sort of a post-1970s popped-up punk spin-off. They had their first number one album in the U.K. and the U.S.with "Synchronicity," which included the hits "Every Breath You Take" and "King of Pain." The group went bust in 1984 and front man Sting went on to solo success - and an impressive Tantric Yoga career.

Welcome to the jungle of trying to score tickets.

Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan rocked fans’ worlds Friday by tweeting out confirmation that the reunited band would hit the road on a 21-city North American tour.

Official dates and venues have yet to be announced, but McKagan confirmed that his band would play New York City during the summer tour.

AXL ROSE MAY REPLACE FRONTMAN BRIAN JOHNSON AT AC/DC SHOWS

Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cincinanati, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, Nashville, New Orleans, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, Toronto and Washington, D.C.

Guns N’ Roses had announced last month that much of the band’s classic late ’80s lineup — including singer Axl Rose, lead guitarist Slash and McKagan would reunite in April to play two gigs in Las Vegas and headline the 2016 Coachella Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif.

There had been rumblings of a cross-country tour to follow but the band had remained mum until now.

The April shows will mark the first time the original Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted lineup performed together since an August 1993 concert in Argentina. After that, Rose’s infamous feuding with the rest of the band led to its complete implosion.

One person conspicuously absent is original rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, who first formed the band with his childhood friend Rose.

Rose kept the name Guns N’ Roses under several new lineups, but only released one new album, 2008’s “Chinese Democracy.”

Duff McKagan Details Uncomfortable Meeting With Prince

"I would assume it’s going to happen." Are Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine going to release a song together?

Two modern metal greats could be cooking up something special

Matt Heafy and Matt Tuck high fiving

Last month, Bullet For My Valentine and Trivum got the metal world talking by revealing that they would be embarking on their first ever world tour together, co-headlining the Poisoned Ascendancy Tour during which the two beloved bands will be playing their classic 2005 albums, The Poison and Ascendancy , in full. The American and Welsh metal heavyweights confirmed the news at a special press conference in London, alongside the first officially confirmed dates for the tour, which will take place across the UK early next year.

Now, as revealed in an exclusive new interview in the latest issue of Metal Hammer , it looks like the two bands could, at some point soon, be working on something else together - a brand new song.

Speaking to Hammer 's Dannii Leivers, Trivium's Matt Heafy and Bullet's Matt Tuck discuss the possibility of the two ever working together on new music - with Tuck in particular suggesting that it looks likely such a collab will eventually see the light of day.

“Yes, absolutely,” responds Heafy when asked if Trivium and Bullet would ever write a song together. When asked by Leivers if the song is "in the pipeline" or not, Heafy replies rather cryptically: "I can’t confirm or not.”

“It’s something we’ve discussed," offers Tuck, more candidly. "It would seem like a missed opportunity if we didn’t do something together, especially for this tour. I would assume it’s going to happen. We haven’t started working on anything yet. Matt’s being shy and coy, but I’ll just say how it is.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the two frontmen discuss the legacy of their most famous albums, almost two decades on. “It’s very cool to see the blueprint that was laid by our two bands; singing, screaming, guitar solos, great rhythm playing," says Heafy. "Also, young fans wanted to dress like us and make music like us and cover our songs.” “I hope we continue to inspire young musicians and bands to pick up these instruments, be creative, have fun, enjoy themselves," adds Tuck. "I think I could speak for Matt when we say both albums shaped a huge part of our musical culture and everyone that listened to them at the time.”

“After this tour, I assume festivals will be calling both our bands begging for these full album plays and then maybe at the 25-year, 30-year mark, let’s do some gigantic stuff," suggests Heafy. "It’s got me set for the future, but I’m going to have a note in front of my face on my bunk every day: enjoy this, relish this, and just sit back and celebrate."

See the full list of UK dates for the Poisoned Ascendancy tour below. Pick up the latest issue of Metal Hammer to read the full interview with Matt Tuck and Matt Heafy.
