Chances are if you’ve ever visited the W hotel, walked past the public tennis courts or attended the Arts + Music Festival, you’ve come across Ricardo’s art.

Ricardo Roig draws inspiration from the landscapes of towns near and far and recreates them through his discovery of “hand-cut prints.” Using an exacto-knife, he cuts out hundreds of tiny pieces of paper and overlaps them to form his desired paper stencil portrait. This past May, Ricardo was commissioned by the city of Hoboken to create “Michael Chang, Hoboken Hero,”, a hand-cut and stencil spray-painted mural overlooking the tennis courts at Columbus Park honoring the Hobokenite who was victorious in the 1989 French Open as the first Asian-American. Ricardo is also the mastermind behind the mural depicting Lackawanna station alongside Napoli’s Pizzeria. Taking into consideration the time and patience required to produce one small stencil print, the overwhelming love and passion he has for creating is almost palpable.

Ricardo recently opened “Roig’s Gallery” an art and framing studio on 252 1st Street, in addition to his showroom in the W hotel. Every Thursday night from 6:00PM-8:00PM, he hosts a “Mix + Sip” at the W hotel offering complimentary drinks and a chance to meet the artist himself.

Hoboken Historical Museum {1301 Hudson Street}

Believe it or not, this Hoboken museum is also home to an art gallery. Not only can you immerse yourself into the history of Hoboken at his local museum, but you can also kick back on the couch inside the “Sinatra Lounge” to listen to his records on a 1919 record player, watch documentaries about his life {as well as Hoboken}, read books written in his memory, and most importantly, marvel at two of Sinatra’s paintings all right inside the Hoboken Historical Museum. Similar to Tony Bennett, Ol’ Blue Eyes took up painting on the side as an escape from his global fame. Sinatra’s Picasso-style self-portrait is the most unique of the two and is believed to have been a gift for his dentist. It is said that most of his paintings were gifts for friends in need of art for their homes or businesses. Stop by for an adventure in time and learn more about Sinatra’s hidden talent. Beyond Sinatra, however, swing by the museum’s art gallery to catch works of different artists being exhibited.

Field Colony {1001 Bloomfield Street}

Perched right on the corner of 10th Street sits this multi-functional gallery that offers several weekly art classes in addition to showcasing unique works from New Jersey artists and a spacious co-working space for meetings.

Aaron Boucher, the co-founder and curator of Field Colony is a multidisciplinary, conceptual, and figurative artist who focuses on paper, canvas, and sculpture. Through his expertise and experience, he has cultivated a wealth of knowledge about the industry as well as the local art community. Aaron is also the artist behind the Hoboken Art + Studio Tour design.

Visitors can take private classes for painting, live drawing, 3D modeling/sketch up, Adobe Illustrator, wax on, marbling/suminagashi, Adobe Photoshop, and film.

Issyra Gallery {300 Observer Highway}

issyra gallery hoboken

Proceed with caution when entering Issa Sow’s gallery, because it is much more than simply a room showcasing art, it is a transformative experience that forces you to ask yourself if you’ve suddenly left Hoboken and entered into a world of creativity bursting with culture and imagination — Issyra Gallery is an artistic escape in every sense of the phrase.

Issa displays his own paintings, with sprinkles of ancient African-inspired sculptures he has collected over the years. He viewed the room itself as his canvas and transformed the floors and walls into a permanent art installation to serve as the perfect backdrop to frame his pieces. You could spend an entire day looking through the pieces he has on display and only get through half of them.

On every first Saturday of the month, the gallery hosts a live music and poetry event showcasing local talent, free to the public.

Proto Gallery { 66 Willow Avenue}

proto gallery hoboken

For a glimpse of what the local art scene currently looks like, Proto Gallery is the place to be. The well-known, contemporary art space features represented artists through solo exhibitions on a periodic basis. They work with emerging and mid-career artists both nationally and abroad. With 2,500 square feet, each installation has room to shine and allows visitors to take in the genius of the artists. Proto is considered one of the best contemporary art galleries in the area. Regardless of which innovative exhibit is on display at the time, you will always find some of the most unsuspecting, imaginative pieces at Proto.

Barsky Gallery {49 Harrison Street}

barsky gallery

{Photo credit: @barskygallery }

Picture it, your next corporate event in a venue decorated with beautiful, gripping artwork. Set the tone for your brand culture, birthday, or holiday celebration by hosting an unforgettable private event at this premier art gallery. With an impressive array of artists being featured, this space has displayed pieces from Karlee Mariel, Hans Petersen, Natalia Pinchuk, and Kevin Connolly Gillespie. At this gallery, there is a dynamic beauty, energy, and playfulness on display through the different techniques, colors, and references to modern culture. Barsky offers a unique opportunity to acquire some of the most cutting-edge contemporary art pieces in the area that would appeal to both new and well-seasoned collectors.

Neumann Leathers Building {333 Newark Street}

This historical landmark , formerly operated for the production of leather, has become a hub for artists and inventors alike. The building alone defies the notion that Hoboken’s art scene is not as expansive as those in other communities. Every floor is home to a number of art studios for local painters, sculptors, print-makers, photographers, clothing designers, and beyond. With so much creativity in one space, you couldn’t begin to guess what was waiting in the next room. Most of these studios are closed off to the public for the artists to create, however, you can meet them and shop their designs by appointment.

These galleries are offering more than just an opportunity to be knocked off of your feet by their unapologetically, intrinsic, and imaginative artists, they are offering a peek into a world where any wild idea could be brought to life in the most unconventional way, a world where freedom of expression is a necessary tool to flourish, the singular world of art.

'Chihuly at Biltmore' art exhibit opens with glass chandeliers, more at historic estate

art tour hoboken

ASHEVILLE - A visionary, a pioneer, and an alchemist ― American artist Dale Chihuly has proven to be these and more as he shapes the art industry and leaves a lasting impression on audiences worldwide.

On March 25, a new exhibit following the evolution of the famed glass artist’s 60-year career opened at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville: “Ch ihuly at Biltmore.”

Chihuly is widely known for making grandiose glass chandeliers constructed with individually handblown pieces.

“Chihuly at Biltmore” encompasses breathtaking large-scale architectural sculptures and other 3D and 2D works created with various styles and mediums displayed in the seven galleries, custom curated for the historic estate.

“Biltmore is a national treasure. Everyone knows about the Biltmore Estate and what it means to American history,” said Britt Cornett, Chihuly Studio director of exhibitions. “For Chihuly, there was always interest not only in presenting his work in traditional museum environments but maybe in unexpected places.”

‘A national treasure’

“Chihuly at Biltmore” will run through Jan. 5 at Amherst at Deerpark.

Chihuly Studio and Biltmore staff said conversations about exhibiting Chihuly’s artworks began in 2005 and led to the outdoor exhibit in 2018, wherein installations decorated areas like Biltmore House and Garden’s lawn and fountains.

“Dale Chihuly is the epitome of a glass artist who exemplifies quality and makes this a brand standard that parallels nicely with Biltmore and what we try to offer here,” said Travis Tatham, Biltmore’s director of destination entertainment and events. “So, we were thrilled when they said, ‘Yes, we would love to partner with you again’ and create something very different than what they created for us in the last exhibition.”

“Chihuly at Biltmore,” an indoor exhibition, differs from the prior exhibit at the estate in that it takes on a museum-style format. Guests are sent on a self-guided exploration of light, color, transparency and shapes, and learn about the process that molded bold ideas and used refined techniques to make the eclectic collection.

In the lobby, guests may watch a 12-minute documentary featuring Chihuly that details his life, thought processes, inspirations and techniques. Timelines on the walls highlight pivotal moments in the artist’s life and career from 1941 to 2024, and how glass art has been a part of Biltmore's history since 1860.

“It’s a great opportunity to help people discover things about Chihuly they may not be aware of,” Cornett said. “He’s a little more well-known for presenting installation chandeliers in particular but we go a little further back into his history, we talk about his methods and what he’s been doing for the last 60 years to today.”

‘Chihuly at Biltmore’ gallery tour

Engineering and infrastructure were a vital part of the custom-built exhibition space and for creating a premier viewing experience as each element was chosen to complement each of the 33 artworks.

Cornett said walls were constructed and painted to accent the art. Black plexiglass was applied to platform bases to reflect the lights and colors of the chandeliers and create an illusion of water in the garden of glass flowers.

“Chihuly at Biltmore” seven-gallery tour begins with Ikebana Light Drawing (2017), an abstract acrylic painting, and two large-scale molten glass sculptures of flowers in vases, “Silvered Ivory Ikebana with Crystal Stems” (2011) and “Silvered Crimson Ikebana with Clarion Stems” (2012) inspired by the art of Japanese flower arrangement.

The series began in 1989 but the artist has returned to the concept.

Guests continue through the galleries to discover a floor-to-ceiling display of Chihuly’s collection of vividly colored Indigenous western trade blankets, dating from 1900 to 1972.

Next, to Chihuly’s Soft Cylinders series featuring a dozen artworks incorporating the “pick-up drawing” technique and displayed on pedestals.

“Halfway into the blowing process, right after the last gather of glass has been dipped from the furnace, the gaffer comes down on the drawing with the molten glass and fuses it to the surface. This is the most exciting moment of making a Soft Cylinder,” according to a statement provided by the studio from Chihuly.

“Ikebana Doppio Drawing Suite #9” (2001), part of the “Works on Paper” 2D abstract drawing series, was created when Chihuly branched out to other creative expression forms following injuries that left him unable to blow glass, according to Cornett.

“Persian Ceiling,” first exhibited in 1986 at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, Palais du Louvre in Paris, prompts viewers to look above to see the array of colorful handblown glass pieces of various sizes that cast hues across the white walls around them.

“Torchlight Chandelier” (2011), “Scarlet Icicle Chandelier” (2015) and “Radiant Yellow Icicle Chandelier” (2018) were made to reflect instead of emit light like traditional chandeliers as they were made to be lit by external light.

The Towers series challenged Chihuly “to create large sculptures for spaces without ceilings or where the ceilings could not bear the weight of ‘Chandeliers.’”

Pieces from the collection may weigh anywhere from 500 lbs. to 5,000 lbs.

“Mille Fiori” (2023), which translates from Italian to “a thousand flowers” features individual large-scale handblown pieces inspired by Chihuly’s memories, like his mother’s garden when he was a child and beach glass.

The final gallery features the “Sapphire Neon and Neodymium Reeds on Logs” (2023), a new installation using Sycamore logs sourced from Biltmore Estate.

“It’s very unique from what we offered in 2018 and it shows a side of his work that we were not able to show last time,” Tatham said. “It’s a great opportunity that the studio presented his work in a way that emulates all the things Dale is known for ― the glass art, the colors, the lights ― and we cannot be more thrilled about what has developed with this particular exhibition.”

Chihuly Studio arrives at Biltmore

Three years ago, the teams began planning for the 2024 special exhibit and the design, creation, package and implementation processes began nearly a year ago. Two weeks before opening day, the artworks ― transported in four 53-foot trailers from Seattle ― were unloaded and the Chihuly Studio and Biltmore teams installed the exhibit.

“It takes some heavy planning and infrastructure to mount a show, a large-scale exhibition of any kind, but in particular, transforming a space like this into a traditional museum gallery,” said Cornett, who’s worked with Chihuly Studio for nearly 19 years.

Cornett said Biltmore, the historic estate of George Vanderbilt, was a natural fit as Vanderbilt was an art collector. The estate’s collection includes works by classic artists like Claude Monet and renowned glass artists’ works. In recent years, Chihuly’s “Iris Gold and Garnet Chandelier” was acquired and is permanently displayed in Biltmore Winery.

“For (Chihuly), it was an opportunity to seize a long-time conversation and see his work placed against the juxtaposition of the beautiful Biltmore Estate. What artist wouldn’t want to do that?” Cornett said.

For “Chihuly at Biltmore,” additional installations are displayed outside Biltmore House ― “Winter White and Glacier Blue Tower” ― and Antler Hill Village ― “Torchlight Chandelier."

“We have a lot of connections to glass and glass art in various forms,” Tatham said. “We feel like Dale Chihuly and his studio are the best in the world. He’s world-renowned, we’re pleased to be partnering with him and showcasing that for guests to enjoy.”

‘Chihuly at Biltmore’ gift shop

Guests may take a piece of “Biltmore at Chihuly” home by purchasing souvenirs from the studio and estate, plus original glass pieces from the artist and studio in the exhibit gift shop.

Chihuly Studio merchandise includes sculptures, glassware, garden décor and more.

Tickets for “Chihuly at Biltmore”

Exhibition tickets are $30 for annual passholders, prices are subject to change.

A Biltmore ticket including admission to the Chihuly exhibit ranges depending on the season. From March 25-May 23 tickets begin at $125; May 24-Nov. 1, tickets begin at $115; and Nov. 2-Jan. 5 tickets begin at $145.

A “Chihuly at Biltmore” package or Biltmore House & Chihuly Exhibition combination tickets are available for overnight guests at one of the estate’s hotel properties.

Chihuly at Biltmore Dinner Series

On March 29, April 27 and May 18, the Chihuly at Biltmore Dinner Series will be hosted at the estate.

Tickets include sparkling and Biltmore wines and hors d’oeuvres reception with strolling musicians outside at the Deerpark Pavilion. Then, guests will embark on a special viewing of the exhibit followed by a premium three-course plated dinner paired with Biltmore wines and a Chihuly at Biltmore-themed dessert.

Museum bus tour will highlight Black arts and culture

Woman sits on a bench looking at the Duncanson Murals in the foyer of the historic house.

A bus tour of local art museums aims to showcase Black artworks and help people feel more comfortable in those spaces. The National Commission for Black Arts & Entertainment is creating the "Family Heritage Hop: A Black Arts & Culture Museum Tour," set to launch later this spring.

"I feel like everybody should have access to the arts here, and I wanted to be able to break down any barriers to that," says Daphney Thomas, commission president and founder.

"Oftentimes some families don't have access, or they might not feel that they are welcome in certain places, or know that there are artists and projects and programs that do reflect African American culture, and that they are welcome and that they can ... see themselves inside of these spaces."

RELATED: Podcast 'The Art Of...' focuses on local creatives and their process

The commission is creating the tour using a $10,000 grant from ArtsWave. It's part of the arts organization's Catalyzing Impacts program that just awarded more than $326,000 for 49 projects.

Participants — the plan is for each tour to take 50-60 people — will visit several local art museums such as the Taft Museum of Art and the Cincinnati Art Museum, and explore works created by Black artists. There also will be food, activities, workshops, and the opportunity to engage with some of the artworks.

Thomas is aiming to offer four free bus tours between May and September. The ArtsWave grant will cover the first two and the commission is applying for additional funding from other sources for the second two.

While the tours will be open to everyone, Thomas wants to reach those who might not be able to get to or afford to visit the museums on their own, and especially children.

LISTEN: Cincinnati’s Black arts community is growing

"We would love to extend the offer to those that might not have the means to afford to take their family — meaning all of their children to the museums — and those who might find themselves without transportation. Those are the two barriers that we are removing for those who find themselves in need of those," she says.

Thomas is also hopeful people, especially children, will be energized to return, learn more, get engaged, and be excited about the arts because they can see themselves reflected in the art and artists.

Horror movie ‘Late Night With the Devil’ faces boycott over AI-generated art

Late Night With the Devil , a new retro indie horror film starring character actor David Dastmalchian as a 1970s talk show host who attempts to commune with the incarnation of evil on live TV, was one of the most buzzed about projects to emerge from last year’s South-by-Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, earning an impressive 100% “fresh” rating on the the review aggregator service Rotten Tomatoes, for a time.

But the film and its co-director brothers Cameron and Colin Cairnes now find themselves at the center of a controversy on X and other social platforms over the usage of AI-generated imagery as retro TV graphics in the film, including one of a skeleton.

As more people have begun seeing the film — it officially begins playing widely in theaters in the U.S. tomorrow, Friday March 22, 2024, though it has been viewable previously at SXSW earlier this month and in select locations — a number of users on X, Reddit , and movie review site Letterboxd have posted to express their disappointment at the AI generated imagery.

Instead, they believe the filmmakers should have used more traditional technologies or contracted an artist, called the usage of AI “depressing” and saying it “broke” their “heart.”

Some, including AI-critic and visual artist Karla Ortiz — one of the leading plaintiffs in a separate, ongoing class-action copyright infringement lawsuit against AI art generators including Midjourney and Stability AI over training on her artwork and those of other artists without permission — called for the filmmakers and distributors to replace the AI generated imagery with more traditional human-made art.

Look how much better this is! They could’ve easily hired an artist to do something awesome like this, and not be in this pr nightmare. Heck they could STILL replace those images before the movie releases with art made by real actual artists. Hell just contact the artist below!? https://t.co/OEA3w6pCJK — Karla Ortiz (@kortizart) March 21, 2024

Late Night With the Devil ‘s co-director brotherly duo the Cairnes told Variety in an article published today that AI was used for only “three brief interstitials” in the film. As their statement reads:

“In conjunction with our amazing graphics and production design team, all of whom worked tirelessly to give this film the 70s aesthetic we had always imagined, we experimented with AI for three still images which we edited further and ultimately appear as very brief interstitials in the film. We feel incredibly fortunate to have had such a talented and passionate cast, crew and producing team go above and beyond to help bring this film to life. We can’t wait for everyone to see it for themselves this weekend.”

Nonetheless, some social media users have called for a boycott on the film to send a message to Hollywood and indie film creators that AI-generated graphics, even minimal ones, are not welcome in the art form.

Full Boycott on Late Night With The Devil unless they remove the AI sludge. I'm sorry about your movie dudes, but it's about sending a message. Y'all in? — Nicholas Kole (@FromHappyRock) March 21, 2024
Want to watch Late Night With The Devil this weekend? Easy!! Buy a ticket for a film that does not feature AI, (Love Lies Bleeding), and simply walk in. Remember, the filmmakers did it to themselves! #LateBoycottWithTheDevil pic.twitter.com/XhoqYxOAKm — Rolo Tony (@PoorOldRoloTony) March 21, 2024

Meanwhile, in response, other filmmakers and cinemaphiles have spoken out against the boycott, noting that indie filmmakers need all the support they can get from audiences in a time when major film studios are more risk-averse and selective about greenlighting new projects than in decades, and that the boycott is unlikely to do anything except raise attention to the film.

A viral boycott of an indie is so funny because all it's doing it getting 100x more eyes on the movie that it would have had. I'll never forget when Fox News and Breitbart called for a boycott on our movie FAITH BA$ED and it led to more press than I've ever had. — ʟᴜᴋᴇ ʙᴀʀɴᴇᴛᴛ ??‍? (@LukeBarnett) March 21, 2024

The controversy is an interesting flashpoint as AI continues to spread throughout mainstream Hollywood, music, entertainment, and the arts more generally, with everyone from the creators of the latest season of HBO’s mystery series True Detective to the artist formerly known as Kanye West embracing it .

The use of AI in film and TV production was one of the biggest sticking points during the actors’ and writers’ strike against Hollywood studios last year , which ultimately resolved with new contractual agreements indicating studios couldn’t mandate the use of AI, and that any AI used in productions would have to be at the discretion of directors and creatives. Yet in this case, that is exactly what happened — the filmmakers chose to use AI — and still faced a public backlash over it.

I myself spoke up in defense of the use of AI in Late Night With the Devil on X, and predicted that at the current pace of adoption, AI visuals are likely to be found in most films made in US within two years. VentureBeat regularly uses AI to generate imagery and some text for our publication.

After all, the controversies around its training data aside, AI art and video generation is a new tool that can reduce the cost of films and time spent creating assets — and filmmakers as a whole have never been too timid to embrace the latest and greatest media technology to push the boundaries of the art, progressing from black-and-white silent films to talkies, technicolor, practical effects and makeup, and lately to computer generated imagery, motion capture, and projection screens.

AI is yet another option for filmmakers, and has already been used in some other acclaimed, award-winning productions including the 2023 Academy Award Best Picture film Everything, Everywhere All At Once and The People’s Joker.

Kristen Stewart Uses Naked Dressing to Make a Point

Her press tour for “Love Lies Bleeding” was something to see.

Ms. Stewart poses in front of a “Love Lies Bleeding” curtain in a black bodysuit, cut very high on the thigh, and black stilettos.

By Vanessa Friedman

Even in the context of the current pantsless trend prevalent on the runway and in some celebrity circles, as well as the vogue for thematic dressing at movie openings, Kristen Stewart’s looks during her press tour for “ Love Lies Bleeding ” have stood out. Rarely has an actress been so unapologetically, gloriously undressed.

Ms. Stewart and her stylist, Tara Swennen, have taken the film’s carnality and covert politics and translated them for the promotional panopticon, forcing anybody watching to confront their own preconceptions about women’s bodies, their sexuality and exactly what empowerment means, while at the same time undermining the whole circus of branded celebrity dressing.

That’s a lot of subtext under very little — clothing, that is. But it was adroitly managed and awfully entertaining to see.

Margot Robbie had fun dressing à la Barbie during her “Barbie” press tour ; Zendaya captured eyeballs and social media during her “Dune: Part Two” camera calls dressed in sci-fi-themed Mugler, Givenchy and Alaïa; and the cast of “Godzilla Minus One” walked the Oscar red carpet in matching lizard-heel footwear. But with her “Love Lies Bleeding” appearances, Ms. Stewart took the concept of character cosplay to a new, more pointed level.

It started in Berlin back in February, when Ms. Stewart shed her shirt for the film’s European premiere, wearing a very short Chanel couture patchwork miniskirt, matching blazer and knit bralet. (She is a Chanel ambassador.) She raised the ante with a controversial Rolling Stone cover in which she wore only a Nike tank top and a jockstrap.

And when she showed up for the film’s Los Angeles premiere in only a “skirts, who needs ’em?” Bettter bodysuit, cut very high on the thigh, with sheer black tights, a black blazer and black stilettos, it was clear that such choices were not mere flukes but a conscious strategy.

As it happens, the motto of Bettter, a label that repurposes men’s suiting for women, is “empower rather than overpower.” Which, given the movie being celebrated, a queer film noir set in a small town in 1980s New Mexico and, as one reviewer wrote, a “ deconstruction of cinematic hypermasculinity ,” is pretty much on the nose.

It was when the promotional juggernaut reached New York, though, that Ms. Stewart really showed her hand. As well as other body parts, in an abbreviated black mini worn with a mesh bra, garter belt-’n’-stockings and a leather blazer for “Late Night With Seth Meyers” and a sheer Monot draped chain halter for “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” Paparazzi caught her exiting her building in tiny cream-colored knit hot pants and a bra worn under a khaki shirt, with stilettos, and then in athletic Chanel micro shorts and matching leg warmers. Again with heels.

The clothes were like a dare to the watching world, a refusal to cater to pretty-girls-in-pretty-dresses gender expectations and a good-natured riposte to the idea that provocation is an invitation. An “I see your judgment and raise you one” piece of fashion politics.

In so orchestrating her outfits, Ms. Stewart, who looked as if she was enjoying herself quite a lot, thank you, demonstrated just how much can be said on the pseudo red carpet even without an E! host asking the point of what she was wearing. You really couldn’t miss her point. After all, she wasn’t exactly covering it up.
