Need travel vaccines? Plan ahead.

International travel increases your chances of getting and spreading diseases that are rare or not found in United States. Find out which travel vaccines you may need to help you stay healthy on your trip.

Before Travel

Make sure you are up-to-date on all of your routine vaccines . Routine vaccinations protect you from infectious diseases such as measles that can spread quickly in groups of unvaccinated people. Many diseases prevented by routine vaccination are not common in the United States but are still common in other countries.

Check CDC’s destination pages for travel health information . Check CDC’s webpage for your destination to see what vaccines or medicines you may need and what diseases or health risks are a concern at your destination.

Make an appointment with your healthcare provider or a travel health specialist  that takes place at least one month before you leave. They can help you get destination-specific vaccines, medicines, and information. Discussing your health concerns, itinerary, and planned activities with your provider allows them to give more specific advice and recommendations.

Because some vaccines require multiple doses, it’s best to see your health care provider as soon as possible.

Medicines to prevent malaria are pills that you start to take before travel. Take recommended medicines as directed. If your health care provider prescribes medicine for you, take the medicine as directed before, during, and after travel.

Where can I get travel vaccines?

You may be able to get some travel vaccines from your primary healthcare provider. If you or your healthcare provider need help finding a location that provides certain vaccines or medicines, visit CDC’s Find a Clinic page.

If yellow fever vaccine is recommended or required for your destination, you’ll need to go to a vaccine center authorized to give yellow fever vaccinations. Many yellow fever vaccine centers also provide other pre-travel health care services. Find an  authorized US yellow fever vaccine center .

Has anyone received the Yellow Fever vaccine from this clinic? It says they require an appointment prior to meet with the travel nurse but I've called repeatedly and no one picks up nor can I leave a message.

Keep calling, they do take appointments for this vaccine only. Make sure to plan ahead, they may be booked up to a month in advance. I suggest calling around 8:30am or 11am....

Professional, thorough and efficient service. Easy to make appointment and great website. Highly recommend.

My wife and I needed the yellow fever vaccine and all of the private travel clinics charged north of $250 for the vaccine, and an additional fee for consultation. Not only did this location stock the vaccine which is surprisingly difficult to find, they were efficient and used our insurance to pay for it after we covered the $50 travel consultation fee. Thank you for the wonderful service!

For the first time will be traveling to a third world country and my physician referred me to this clinic. My expectation was set pretty low. I was completely blown away with the entire experience. They were prompt, extremely thorough with what was needed, not needed, symptoms of possible illness, over the counter meds to have on hand, what the side effects of the needed meds were and exactly where certain diseases were in relation to where we were going. Everyone we dealt with, including the pharmacy, was professional and informative. Fontaine was our clinic consultant and she knocked it out of the park. She spent probably about 30-45mins with us. The front desk intake women were helpful and pleasant along with the dispensing pharmacist. A great experience. I have a medical background I couldn't find one thing I would change. I would encourage everyone to use this service.

TLDR; This clinic provides a lot of travel information, not just vaccinations and immunizations. However, be prepared to spend upwards of $50 and more than 1 hour if you are coming in regarding travel vaccines. My mom and I stepped into the empty clinic on a weekday afternoon, seeking one specific travel vaccination prior to her travels later this month. We were instructed to fill in paperwork, pay $50 for the appointment (this is prior to any vaccination fees and is not covered by insurance) and take a seat and wait. We waited for over an hour until we were called to sit down with a pharmacist. That alone was enough to wear our patience thin, especially when there was no one in line ahead of us when we arrived. The pharmacist explained that this consultation would take ~45 minutes in order to do her due diligence in asking questions about my mom's vaccination history, travel plans, specific regions, etc in order to properly discuss the risks. However after multiple previous clinics which denied her vaccinations and waiting for an hour at this one, my mom did not have the patience to sit for a consultation. The ladies working were gracious enough to refund her the money, since the $50 was meant to cover the consultation which she did not want. If you are on a time crunch and are only interested in a few specific vaccinations, this is not the clinic for you. If you have at least an hour and more than $50 to spare to have a thorough assessment of your medical history and travel plans in order to be properly protected, I would recommend this clinic. While this clinic didn't fit our needs and was exceedingly slow, I felt that the workers here were professional, courteous, and thorough.

Photo of Kalkidan A.

If you don't have health insurance and need travels shots this is a great place to go. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. The nurse explained everything to me so thoroughly. I was very impressed. The prices for the shots are also reasonable.

Photo of Nick S.

I would never expect five-star service from a government agency! (DMV anyone?) So, I was blown away by the service I received from this clinic. Remember they're closed from 1130 am to 1 pm. I showed up precisely at 1 pm, and the doors opened promptly. You pay 50$ upfront for the consultation (insurance does not cover that). Within 15-20 minutes of arrival, my consultation began, and that included the time to fill out the paperwork. Khanh gave me an excellent consultation; she broke down every city I was visiting in the Philippines and told me every virus or outbreak that was currently happening in the region. We went over the preventative measures I should take in each area. Khanh answered all of my questions. I ended up getting a polio booster shot and an oral medicine for malaria. They recently got insurance to start covering the vaccines themselves, although it does depend on your insurance what is included. Luckily they were able to pull up my vaccine record, and I had a lot more than I expected. Overall it was a quick, efficient experience, and I will be back when I go on my next adventure!

Photo of Linh L.

This is the go to place for travel vaccinations. So I make a point to stop by here before heading out to any overseas travel that may require shots. They keep my records in their system. But be warned that they will charge you for a $30 service fee even if you just want a consultation, for their time and services. Any vaccinations you need will be extra. I don't like shots, but every time I get something, it is always quick and painless, probably because they do it so often. I also appreciate their thoroughness in covering all the CDC recommendations and explain the risks and any side effects. I have not experienced any bad reactions, but at least I know what to look out for. They take a lunch break, so make sure you take that into account. And most of the time when I go, there's always a full waiting room. But somehow last time I went, I lucked out and there was no wait...score! They give you a yellow sheet with updated vaccination record and a receipt. Since last time, I misplaced mine, I took a picture of it so I could have an electronic copy for my records. Parking could be tricky, metered street parking is limited. Traveling is fun and exciting, but there can be risks. This place helps keep you safe with the required preparations for your trip.

It was my first time at this travel clinic for vaccines before travel. I came in on Monday at around 10am and there was one other customer in the lobby. Took a yellow form and a number and then peeked around the desk window because I was looking for a clipboard. Divya asked what I was there for and after explaining I was there for travel she gave me another paper to fill out. Another lady came in about 15 minutes after me and she was the last patient they allowed before they closed at 11:30 for lunch. They did turn some people away who came in afterwards. Be mindful of that when you plan your visit! I saw some other reviews say that they do not take insurance, but they do check your insurance now to see if it covers the vaccines (but not the visit cost of $30). I consulted with Amy Le and she was super sweet. She gave me a packet of info pertaining to the countries I was visiting and highlighted important information for me. She went through all the potential side effects and answered all my questions very patiently. She even showed me the maps of high/low risk areas. Overall, I had a really great experience because of the very pleasant staff, Amy and Divya! The only downside was the wait. I spent 1.5 hours there in total, which I didn't mind too much because I chose to remain stress-free and not check my work email lol. Based on my one experience, it is not a quick visit so plan accordingly. Last note, I was able to find parking in their lot (3 hour visitor parking). The lot was probably at 90% capacity when I arrived.

Photo of Timothy C.

Had to get a TB test done last minute, so I dropped by on a Wednesday around 10am. Absolutely empty, no wait, and the staff was very attentive. Costs $33 up front. They make it very clear they don't take insurance, so I thank them for that disclaimer by passing that message along. When the reviews said that you can be in and out in under 15 minutes, they weren't kidding. I want to say a good 5 minutes was me taking my sweet time filling out the forms. Actually getting the TB test was great. The staff was kind and the one who administered the test was very welcoming and positive. Getting the TB test read 2 days later wasn't as nice. Came in at around the same time. There were two other people ahead of me, but it took 45 minutes for me to get my arm looked at and show them that I don't have a bump from the TB test. I definitely don't blame them though. They have a sign up front saying that they are heavily understaffed and it would impact wait times. It's an unfortunate reflection of a systemic issue across all of healthcare, especially in the Bay Area. Once again, it's not their fault they don't have enough staff and that they only had one person who was trained to administer shots and read TB tests; it's just them making the best out of what they have and providing a service to the community, and I thank them for that. So yeah! Just a disclaimer that you can either be in and out in under 15 minutes. Or you could get unlucky and wait 45 minutes. But all in all was a good experience and I'll definitely be back whenever I may need their services.

What is Clear, and how does it work?

As an expedited security program, Clear allows you to bypass the two-step Transportation Security Administration security process at domestic airports by completing the identity verification step via biometric authentication (that is, by using your personal biological traits such as fingerprints) in a separate lane solely dedicated to Clear users.

After successfully verifying your identity with either a fingerprint or an iris scan at a Clear kiosk, a Clear representative will take you to the TSA security screening line — either the TSA PreCheck line or the standard TSA line.

As of December, travelers can use Clear at 54 airports nationally, as well as at stadiums and other large venues.

Travelers under 18, such as family members, may use the Clear line for free if accompanied by a Clear member.

Once you are a Clear member, you can log in to your account on Clear's website and add up to three family members for $99 each per year.

How to sign up for Clear

To sign up for Clear, you can either start the enrollment process online and finish at a Clear location, or you can complete the entire process at a Clear location. Either way, users must complete the final enrollment steps in person at a Clear location.

The sign-up and enrollment process should only take a few minutes. In person, you'll be asked to verify your identity, attach your biometrics and show a valid photo ID.

How and Where to Get COVID-19 Vaccines and Boosters in New Jersey

By emily paulin , elissa chudwin , october 06, 2023 12:37 pm, which vaccines are available and who can get them.

Senior Patient Successfully Receiving Her Vaccination

  • Novavax: The updated vaccine, which uses a more traditional technology , was authorized in October for people 12 and older and replaces any previous versions. It targets a more recent strain of the omicron variant and is an alternative for people who cannot or will not get an mRNA vaccine.  You will need two shots given three weeks apart for a full primary series. You may get a single dose if you’ve been previously vaccinated and have not received an updated Pfizer or Moderna mRNA vaccine.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is no longer available in the U.S.

Which boosters are available and who can get them?

  • Pfizer and Moderna: The updated vaccine has replaced the bivalent booster. The CDC recommends waiting at least two months after your last dose before getting the latest shot.  People with compromised immune systems may receive additional doses of the updated vaccine, depending on their vaccination history. More information is available at the CDC’s website.
  • Novavax : The updated version of this vaccine has replaced the Novavax booster. The CDC recommends waiting at least two months after your last dose before getting an updated shot. People with compromised immune systems may receive additional doses , depending on their individual circumstances.

Where can I get a vaccine or booster?

Vaccines are administered at retail pharmacies, including Walgreens , Rite Aid (or Walmart )   and CVS , local clinics and other locations, such as doctor’s offices. Use the federal government’s vaccine website vaccines.gov to search for vaccination sites by zip code. Get the same information by texting your zip code to 438829 or by calling 800-232-0233. You can check with your primary care physician’s office to see if COVID-19 vaccinations are offered. If you are a veteran, the Department of Veterans Affairs offers COVID-19 vaccinations at VA facilities. Sign up online or call 800-827-1000 to make an appointment. More information about COVID-19 vaccines also is available at New Jersey's COVID-19 Information Hub . Or you can call the state's COVID-19 vaccine hotline on 855-429-1168.

Do I have to pay for the vaccination?

The federal government is no longer covering the cost of the vaccines, but most people with Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance will not have to pay. The CDC’s Bridge Access Program will temporarily provide free vaccines to adults who either do not have health insurance or whose health insurance does not cover the cost of the vaccine. Be aware that scammers often purport to offer COVID vaccines and treatments and try to charge for them. AARP’s Fraud Watch Network is tracking the latest scams.

Can I mix and match vaccines?

It’s safe and effective to receive an updated Pfizer, Moderna or Novavax vaccine at least two months after your last dose — no matter which brand you’ve received in the past, including Johnson & Johnson.

How are the updated Pfizer, Moderna and Novavax vaccines different?

The updated vaccines only target one strain of the omicron variant, called XBB.1.5, and are recommended by the CDC to protect against more recently circulating strains of the virus. The Pfizer and Moderna bivalent boosters targeted the original strain of the virus and two omicron subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5. The Novavax booster targeted only the original strain of the virus.

What should I bring to my vaccine or booster appointment?

Some vaccination sites ask for proof of identity or eligibility. Bring a driver’s license or other state-issued ID that shows your name, age and state of residency, along with your health insurance and vaccination cards, if you have them. The CDC is no longer distributing vaccine cards and they are not required to receive a vaccine . But if you’ve lost your card, you can call the site where you were vaccinated to request a new one or a copy of your vaccination record. You can also contact your state health department to request a replacement card or a copy of your record.

Can I get the COVID-19, RSV and flu vaccines at the same time?

According to the CDC, it is safe to receive the flu and updated COVID-19 vaccines simultaneously, although you are a little more likely to experience side effects, such as a headache and fatigue. Adults 60 or older who qualify for the RSV vaccine may also receive that at the same time as the others, but some health experts suggest spacing them out . Contact your health care provider for more information.

How are vaccinations working in nursing homes and long-term care facilities?

The U.S. government is no longer distributing COVID-19 vaccines to long-term care facilities. That means that nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other long-term care settings are now responsible for coordinating COVID-19 vaccination programs for their residents and staff. Most long-term care facilities have existing partnerships with local pharmacies or health departments to provide a variety of vaccinations, such as flu vaccines, COVID-19 vaccines and others. Long-term care facilities that receive Medicare and/or Medicaid dollars are required by federal law to educate residents, their representatives and staff about COVID–19 vaccines and offer a COVID–19 vaccine to residents, resident representatives and staff.

How protected am I postvaccination?

All vaccines reduce the risk of COVID-19 infections and are highly effective at preventing severe illness and death from the disease. No vaccine is 100 percent effective, and infections can still occur postvaccination. This guide was updated on Oct. 6, 2023, with new CDC recommendations.

Yes, COVID-19 is still a thing. Here's where to get free tests, vaccinations and more

O f course, it may feel like the pandemic is over — no more masking in most places, fewer precautions and eased-up pressure to get the vaccine and its various boosters.

However, officials are still warning about the effects, as the COVID-19 virus has made itself a permanent fixture in the lives of all.

A new isolation period?

Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is considering loosening restrictions on isolation periods, according to the Washington Post . This would be the first sign of loosening within the guidelines since 2021.

Oregon and California are some of the first to break away from the CDC guidelines and have loosened up rules for isolation, too.

Currently, the CDC guidelines recommend staying at home for five days due to those being the highest infectious period. After five days, it is recommended to mask up for up to 10 days if symptoms ease.

A different type of COVID-19 vaccine and how to get vaccinated

Similar to the flu shot, the newest COVID-19 shot is designed specifically for the 2023-24 season and is not a booster .

COVID-19 shots are available at most places: CVS, Walgreens, local health departments, doctor's offices and more.

Need a location? Vaccine places can be found at coronavirus.delaware.gov/vaccine/where-can-i-get-my-vaccine/ . Free options can be found at www.cdc.gov/vaccines/programs/bridge/ , although the COVID-19 vaccine is typically available at no cost.

More information from the state of Delaware regarding the vaccine can be found at coronavirus.delaware.gov/vaccine/ .

COVID-19 numbers in Delaware

As of Feb. 16, 348,931 positive cases have been reported in the state. Over 3,600 people have died in Delaware.

However, many Delawareans have gotten their COVID-19 shot, with over 2,308,000 doses administered. The number of residents with the updated 2023-24 shot is over 140,000 . That's around 14.4% of the total population.

Currently, there are over 89 current hospitalizations, according to the state — with 12 of those cases being critical.

Although the current positive case number is 533 people, many who have COVID-19 are not reporting due to not needing medical attention.

If you do test positive, reports can be made anonymously at learn.makemytestcount.org .

I lost my vaccine card. Now what?

Once a necessity for getting into things like events, concerts and more, many of us may have misplaced our COVID-19 vaccine card due to little to no restrictions.

No worries: Delaware offers a public portal for vaccine records, with instructions here .

Where can I get a COVID-19 test?

Rapid tests, which are antigen tests that can be taken at home, offer the quickest results on whether the test taker is positive or negative. Once a struggle to get, tests are now offered in many drugstores.

The federal government also offers free test kits at a limit of four per household at www.covid.gov .

Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care

2024 National Immunisation Program influenza vaccination – early advice for health professionals

Influenza vaccination is our best defence against influenza.

decorative image for the 2024 influenza season

Key points and updates for 2024

Annual vaccination is the most important measure to prevent influenza and its complications. It is recommended for all people aged 6 months and over.

The National Immunisation Program (NIP) provides free influenza vaccines to people most at risk of complications from influenza. Influenza vaccines can be administered on the same day as any COVID-19 vaccine.

Flucelvax Quad® is a cell-based vaccine funded for people aged 5 to 64 years with medical conditions that put them at an increased risk of complications from influenza.

For adults aged 65 years and over, the adjuvanted Fluad® Quad is recommended over standard influenza vaccines.

It is mandatory to report all vaccines that you administer to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR).

Vaccine supply and timing

National Immunisation Program influenza vaccines can be ordered from April 2024 depending on your state or territory health department.

Vaccination can commence from mid-April to provide protection for the peak of the flu season. This is generally from June to September in most parts of Australia. However, there is no need to wait. You can vaccinate as soon as stock is available. Viruses can circulate well after the peak, so continue to offer vaccination as long as valid vaccines are available.

If your patient had a 2023 influenza vaccine in late 2023 or even early 2024, they should still receive a 2024 vaccine when they become available.

Eligible groups

Free influenza vaccines under the NIP, are available for:

  • children aged 6 months to less than 5 years
  • pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy
  • First Nations people aged 6 months and over
  • people aged 65 years and over
  • people aged 6 months and over with certain medical conditions that increase their risk of severe influenza and its complications.

Encouraging vaccination

The best defence against influenza is to increase vaccination rates in eligible groups and the community overall.

Take every opportunity to offer influenza vaccination to your patients and their family members.

Prepare for the season

Ensure readiness for the influenza season by:

  • discarding expired vaccines and disposing of them in line with local protocols
  • ordering 2024 vaccines through your state or territory health department
  • promoting the free vaccine to eligible people and priority groups
  • considering opportunities to co-administer vaccines – you can give influenza vaccines on the same day as any COVID-19 vaccine
  • ensuring vaccine safety – always check your patient’s age and the age range printed on the syringe before vaccination
  • reporting to the AIR all influenza vaccines that you have given to your patients – this includes both NIP and private vaccines.

Additional resources

Providers are strongly encouraged to review the:

  • ATAGI statement on the administration of seasonal influenza vaccines in 2024
  • 2024 influenza vaccination – Program advice for health professionals
  • 2024 influenza (flu) vaccination – Consumer fact sheet

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has recently issued advice on the National COVID-19 Vaccine Program for 2024 , and recommendations regarding respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines available on the private market.

Russian cities battle heating outages as temps drop below freezing

Tens of thousands of people in Russia are affected by a lack of heating, water or electricity, according to Russian media reports, after frost and outdated pipes are causing outages in many cities amidst below freezing temperatures.

A main district heating pipe in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk busted on Thursday, the local media outlet Siberian Express reported.

Hot water and heating failed in more than 100 homes and 12 other buildings, while the hot water from the district heating pipe poured down a main road at minus 15 degrees Celsius.

A survey by the rosteplo.ru website showed that 3,000 people in the harbour city of Vladivostok on the Pacific were without heating on Wednesday.

In the nearby city of Nakhodka, 6,000 people were without heating, while disruptions in the cities of Yekaterinburg, Volgograd, Saratov and Penza in recent days were also reported.

In St Petersburg, the rupture in a district heating pipe should be repaired by Thursday morning, according to the authorities.

In Podolsk, a city near Moscow, the heating plant of an ammunitions factory, which also supplies over 170 high-rise buildings, broke down on January 4. The town's deputy head of administration, Roman Ryazantsev, was taken into custody on Wednesday, according to the court there. About 20,000 people were affected.

This time Russian President Vladimir Putin intervened and ordered a rapid restoration of the heating supply and nationalized the ammunitions factory. Other cities in the Moscow region are also facing heating problems.

Politically, the heating supply failures are a set back for Putin, who is seeking re-election for a fifth term in March.

Affected citizens protested in some cities. In the town of Elektrostal near Moscow, some houses had allegedly not been heated since mid-December, while people are keeping warm by open fires on the street.

In its war of against Ukraine, Russia is attempting to damage the neighbouring country's energy supply by firing missiles at it, while last winter this resulted in electricity, heating, gas and water often failing in Kiev and other cities.

This winter, fewer outages are being reported in Ukraine despite the attacks.

CCTV footage showing an industrial furnace showering workers with molten metal is shocking viewers of a video-sharing website.

Believed to have occurred at one of the metallurgy manufacturing plant in the Russian city Elektrostal, east of Moscow, the undated video shows three men sprayed with a wave of sparks in the intensive blast.

With no stories filed by any international news agency, the fate of the workers remains unknown. Several figures can be seen walking about following the explosion.

Commenters on Live Leak, the site to which the video uploaded, have speculated that the incident occurred after water – used to cool the machinery’s copper induction coil – mixed with electricity and the molten steek.

Another user said: “Reminds me of the time a tractor battery blew up on us and spewed battery acid all over the place... we were just as dumbfounded as these guys were. No injuries to us, but ruined clothing for sure.”

Schoolchildren as young as nine were filmed parading in military uniforms while carrying replica machine guns and chanting war songs in Russia .

The primary school pupils carried 'toy guns' and chanted 'there is no forgiveness to your enemies' as they marched in the industrial city of Elektrostal, which lies 36 miles east of Moscow.

The parade coincided with a call from Vladimir Putin 's top security official for a boost to military training for children.

It also comes as tension between Russia and the West is at the highest since the end of the Cold War.

The schoolchildren wore military uniforms

During the event, the pupils chanted war songs which included the line 'there is no forgiveness to your enemies'

Footage shows the nine-year-old's marching in line and chanting the war song as parents and teachers watch on.

Other scenes showed pupils aged seven to 16 also marching in military attire while singing the war songs.

During their chants the schoolchildren said: 'We are Russians, God is with us! We are Russians, Russians don't sell out.'

The song also included the line: 'There is no forgiveness to your enemies' and 'The last breath is for the Motherland.'

The scenes come after spymaster Nikolai Patrushev, head of the Kremlin's security council, demanded a boost in Russia's youth army, set up in 2015, which already numbers 803,000.

Critics have alleged the Young Army Cadets National Movement, also known as Yunarmia, resembles the Hitler Youth in Nazi Germany, and also alleged rising militarisation in Russia.

However Patrushev - who once headed the FSB security service - has called for 'creating and developing training centres in regions for the military and patriotic upbringing of young people'.

This would help to combat extremism and 'pro-Western liberal values', he said.

While the  parade in Elektrostal is not specifically linked to Yunarmia it has been criticised by a psychologist Elena Kuznetsova for glorifying war and death.

Children should not wear military uniform, and that the organisers portrayed war as a holiday, she said.

'For most of our ancestors in the war years, these clothes were a posthumous garment,' she told Takie Dela news outlet.

'The military uniform is a dress for death.

'To suffer an untimely death, to meet it yourself, prematurely.

'Leaving traces of grief wherever such uniform boots step.

'Children need to buy clothes about life, not about death.'

Organisers of the Elektrostal event said: 'It was not a parade, but a school check of marching and songs.'

School deputy head Elena Karpacheva said children aged nine had carried 'toy guns', while others aged seven to 16 had only marched and sung war songs.

Defenders of the youth army and such events with children say it allows children to stay out of trouble while fostering patriotism.

Tuberculosis (TB) Vaccination

Vaccines recommended for travel and some specific groups.

BCG is a vaccine for TB. This vaccine is not widely used in the United States, but it is often given to infants and small children in other countries where TB is common. BCG vaccine does not always protect people from getting TB. If you were vaccinated with BCG, you may have a positive reaction to a TB skin test. This reaction may be due to the BCG vaccine itself or due to infection with the TB bacteria. Your positive reaction is more likely to mean you have been infected with TB bacteria… More
