The PERFECT Kuching Itinerary With Heritage Walks, Where to Eat & Day Trips From Sarawak’s Capital

April 23, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

To outsiders, it would be a mistake to merely classify Kuching as just another city in Malaysia. It has had a long history as the capital of a self-governing state distinct from the affairs of the Malayan peninsula or even from Sabah . Even until this day, Sarawak has a separate immigration regime from the rest of Malaysia. All this means that visitors who come can expect something different from Kuala Lumpur , Penang or even Melaka . The streets are brimming with history and a casual walk through the older parts of town can attest to that. This despite Sarawak being sparsely populated and mostly forested.

The fact that much of Sarawak is still filled vegetation presents plenty of eco-tourism opportunities. It is possible to go to the beach in the morning, go hiking through a hill or cave in the afternoon and come back in the evening for a great meal and a night cap. Speaking about food, this is also one of Malaysia’s food capitals with dishes such as Kolo Mee, Sarawak Laksa and Ayam Pansuh closely associated with the city as well as the state.

In this article, I aim to show how one can do Kuching in 1, 2, 3 or even 4 days with a Kuching itinerary that can easily be adapted depending on one’s interests.

Table of Contents

Explore the Colonial Architecture

Immediately south of the waterfront is Kuching’s traditional civic core. This area is replete with colonial style buildings including the Main Post Office . Adorned by imposing neoclassical columns, the building was designed by architectural firm Swan & Maclaren which also designed several buildings in Singapore’s civic area including the Raffles Hotel.

Some of Kuching’s old  buildings have found a new lease of life as cafes and restaurants. One example is the Old Court House which now houses a cafe, bar and fine-dining restaurant. Visitors are free to roam some of these buildings. The Old Court House in particular, has a beautiful inner courtyard fitted with benches for folks to sit and relax.

Go Museum Hopping

borneo cultures museum

In all my travels in Asia, I have not seen so many museums concentrated in one place. In Kuching, the museum selection ranges from the tacky, quick visit types to multi-story affairs that will take a few hours. The new Borneo Cultures Museum is a must-visit even if you are not really into museums. Anyone with more than a passing interest in tribal cultures, headhunting and early human settlements will find the exhibits here quite immersive. The museum itself also affords one of great views over the city. A short walk from it is the Sarawak Museum which was purposely built in the 1800s as an ethnology museum.

Near the waterfront is the Chinese History Museum . Admission is free and visitors can learn more about the various Chinese dialect groups that populate and make up a significant proportion of the city.

If you have time to spare, you can also check out the rather kitschy Cat Museum , built simply because Kuching’s name means “cat” in Malay (although cats were not a significant part of the city’s origins). This museum is filled with plenty of cat and feline memorabilia and exhibits.

Strolling Through Jalan India & Jalan Carpenter

Kuching is large enough for all the urban creature comforts but its streets are still relatively free of air pollution and quite pleasant to walk around (when it’s not too hot). As the city has been the capital of Sarawak for over 180+ years, the old commercial areas are charming with plenty of photo-worthy corners to check out. The two streets to go for a stroll in Kuching are Jalan India, the traditional home of the local Indian population in Kuching, as well as Carpenter Street – the city’s first Chinatown.

jalan india

jalan india

Jalan India today has a large cover above the shophouses to protect pedestrians from the rain. The street is pedestrian-only and is filled with bazaars. Lorong Kai Joo is an alley off Jalan India where one can find age-old bakeries and teahouses. Hiap Yak Tea Shop is where people come for a cup of coffee and toast in a retro setting. It is known for opium coffee – essentially black coffee flavored with a slab of butter.

Jalan Carpenter is a relatively short stretch filled with furniture stores, bars, Chinese restaurants as well as a few cafes and the odd souvenir shop. As Kuching is not an extremely touristy place, the area still has a very local feel. Drunk Monkey is a popular watering hole in the area with a rather sparse but sufficient menu. If you are looking for cocktails, the 2-story The Royal Chamber might be more up your alley. For coffee lovers, Black Bean Coffee towards the end of the stretch is regularly regarded as one of the best coffee places in Kuching. While they don’t have an instagrammable cafe to boast of and seats are rather limited, they offer various types of coffee beans including those from Sarawak itself.

In the eastern side of the city center, Jalan Padungan is also worth a stroll. The arcaded shopfronts seemingly alternate between restaurants, shops selling Kuching snacks and auto supply / hardware stores. Here, you can stock up on Kuching delicacies such as Bee Pang (crispy rice cakes), Almond Cookies, etc. On both ends of the street, you can also see variations of Kuching’s famous cat statues.

Take a Sampan to Fort Margherita

fort margherita

fort margherita

From the city center, hire a sampan for the 5 minute or so journey to the northern bank of the river and visit Fort Margherita. Situated on a hill overlooking the town, this historical building was built to fend off pirates and has been converted into The Brooke Gallery – a museum dedicated to Charles Brooke, the “White Rajah” who previously ruled Sarawak.

Tip: If you also intend to visit The Ranee Museum inside the Old Courthouse, purchase the Explorer Pass which gives you admission to both Fort Margherita and The Ranee Museum.

Explore the Waterfront

The waterfront of Kuching is one of its defining features and makes for one of Malaysia’s most picturesque city panoramas. With a river that curves gently in all the right places and a number of landmarks strategically built by the riverbanks, the waterfront is an active meeting point both in the day and at night. Early in the morning and in late afternoon, one can catch joggers zipping through the well-paved promenade. At night, families gather here for supper or a pleasant evening stroll.

darul hana bridge

darul hana bridge

The Darul Hana Bridge is a twirling pedestrian bridge that connects the northern part of town with the south. The design contains traces of local tribal culture with the hornbill topped towers paying homage to the Bidayuh culture. This is the best place to catch the sunrise or sunset in Kuching in my opinion if you don’t have access to a rooftop / high view point. At night, there is also a light and water show by the river. Called the Darul Hana Musical Fountain, the schedule is as follows: 8:30PM and 9:30PM daily with an additional one at 10:30PM on Friday and Saturday.

skyline of kuching

From the bridge, one can have a closer view of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly . Depending on who you ask, it said to resemble either a royal Malay umbrella (payung negara) or a traditional multi-pointed hat from the Iban tribe. The building was opened in 2009 and is now probably the best known architectural landmark of the city. For your best bet in getting postcard worthy shots of the assembly building, I can suggest going in the afternoon (any time after 2pm) to see the sunlight shining on its exterior.

Tip: For a panoramic view of Kuching’s cityscape, head up to the rather eerie carpark building that is Medan Pelita. You will be able to see the nice contrast between the low-rise shophouses and the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly and the river separating both areas.

Try Sarawakian Cuisine

lepau

For dinner, head to Lepau for a dose of local Sarawak cuisine. The menu offers a rundown of the specialties including Ayam Pansuh – chicken cooked in bamboo stalk and covered in tapioca leaves, Tempoyak (fermented durian) served with a variety of meats – as well as Midin (forest ferns).

Semenggoh Wildlife Reserve

semenggoh wildlife centre

semenggoh wildlife centre

A trip to Kuching is probably incomplete without a visit to the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre for a round of orangutan spotting. The park is roughly 35 minutes from Kuching and is a habitat for wildlife rather than a zoo. As such, it is not always guaranteed that one can spot orangutans during a visit although chances are fairly high. The only exception is during fruit season (typically between October to March) when the orangutans can easily find food to eat from the forest and as such, do not need to go to the feeding area, where the galleries are located, for food.

Unless you have your own car, it is recommended to visit Semenggoh Wildlife Reserve as part of a join-in tour (you can book an inexpensive one here ) because it is located in the wilderness and it might be difficult to find a Grab / taxi back. A typical tour lasts for about 3 hours and can be opted for either the morning of afternoon. Visits are timed to coincide with the feeding schedule.

tasik biru in bau

tasik biru in bau

The town of Bau is located some 45 minutes to 1 hour away from Kuching. This former mining town is famous for its caves, mountains as well as the manmade Taman Tasik Biru , a former gold mine that has been filled with water and turned into a lake. The relatively serene surroundings makes it a conducive place to rent a boat or to just sit by one of the lakeside sheds and watch the world go by.

paku rock maze garden

paku rock maze garden

A relatively new attraction is Bau is the Paku Rock Maze Garden – a beguiling rock formation just off the highway connecting Kuching and Bau. It is literally a rock maze – with the 2-meter tall (or more!) rock formation creating natural passageways within the forest. While it is possible to get lost within the rock maze, fret not. Signs are scattered within the complex to guide visitors to the right path. Admission is free.

In Bau, one can also visit the 2 caves: Wind Cave and Fairy Cave which are about 7km away from each other. The 2 caves can be visited within a few hours. Bring insect repellant and flashlights. Some parts of the Wind Cave are pitch dark.

Siniawan

siniawan night market

siniawan night market

End your day of exploration in the one-street town of Siniawan . Every Fridays to Sundays, this quiet row of wooden shophouses comes alive with lanterns, a night market and street stalls selling various snacks. Tables are laid out on the street and visitors can partake in various Sarawak and Malaysian dishes. If you love soaking in the old town vibes, it’s worth the 15 minute journey here from Bau. To get back to Kuching, allow for about 40 minutes drive.

Enjoy a Hearty Bowl of Kuching’s Quintessential Kolo Mee

kuching kolo mee

kuching kolo mee

Kolo Mee is to Kuching as Pho is to Vietnam. If you were to think of one iconic dish to come from the Cat City, it would most likely be these bowls of curly, springy noodles with minced meat, char siu and doused with a light sauce. It can be had at any time of day but is most commonly eaten as a breakfast dish. You can have it plain which is the standard version or opt for a “red” version which comes with char siu sauce. Whichever version you go for, it’s easy to find kolo mee in any coffee shop in Kuching. Popular spots for a bowl include Chong Choon Cafe and Choon Hui Cafe . The latter is also popular for Sarawak Laksa.

Sarawak Cultural Village

kuching trip itinerary

sarawak culture village

Located near Mount Santubong is the Sarawak Cultural Village . Think of it as a living museum – with reconstructions of traditional houses of the tribes living in Sarawak. This is a good way to gain a quick overview of the many indigenous cultures found in the state without having to travel to Sarawak’s remote areas. The village also boasts of peaceful ponds, attractive foliage and photo-worthy sections. Don’t miss the enthralling cultural performance at the end. If you head there in the morning, you can expect to be back in Kuching by about 1:30PM to 2PM. You can join a group tour to the village here with hotel pick-up included.

Shop for Handicrafts

kuching trip itinerary

Kuching is a great place to buy authentic tribal handicrafts. If you love rattan, beadwork, woven cloths, carvings and intricate patterns; the shops along the Main Bazaar – the shophouses facing the waterfront – offer plenty of choices. Quality varies as well and haggling is expected in the smaller stores. Many of the products are expertly done and don’t carry any kitschy “Sarawak” or “Kuching” logo on them. I personally bought some baskets with intricate woven patterns as decorative wall art. For something more upmarket, you can check out the souvenir shop inside The Ranee Boutique Suites or the Sarawak Craft Council.

Seafood Dinner at Top Spot

kuching trip itinerary

Located in a nondescript building is Topspot Food Court , Kuching’s most popular spot for seafood. Located at the topmost floor of the building, the venue hosts dozens of seafood stalls with a communal dining hall. Dishes to try here include spiny lobsters, bamboo shells, crab and prawns that can be cooked to your liking. Check out the local version of the oyster pancake which is presented as a thin UFO-shaped cracker with the oysters studded throughout the surface.

Bako National Park

If you have another full day to spare in Kuching or timed your departure for the evening, you can head out to Bako National Park which can be done as a day trip. What makes this national park special is that its coastal setting affords one of a variety of experiences – including jungle trekking, chilling by the beach and taking a boat ride out to see some rock formations.

bako national park in sarawak

bako national park in sarawak by Fabio Achilli

A typical trip to Bako National Park involves going through one of the trails, each with its own unique features and having varied levels of difficulty. For beginners, the Paku Trail is relatively short, with little change in terrain. The trail ends at the beach. Other tails include the Tajor Trail, Limbang Trail and for those seeking a challenge – the Limau Trail which also end on the beach. While trekking through the park, your guide will try to seek out proboscis monkeys. These big-nosed primates are found all over Borneo, especially in the coastal and mangrove areas.  You can join a day tour to Bako National Park here .

Another option is to head to Gunung Gading National Park for another day tour to see the Rafflesia flower (if it’s in bloom). The tour typically lasts until 3:30PM to 4PM and involves a hike to see the flower if it’s in bloom, waterfalls as well as a spot of swimming.

Other Tips for Kuching

  • Travel insurance: It may be advisable to get travel insurance, especially if you plan to do adventure activities. If you come from Singapore, I can recommend checking out Starr TraveLead for its cheap single- trip travel insurance with S$10 cash rebate to help offset the insurance cost here . If you are based elsewhere, check out Worldnomads as they have quite an extensive coverage, even including personal accidents into their list of benefits.
  • Weather: Kuching is the wettest major city in Malaysia and it can rain any time of the year. However, it is the wettest between November to March where rains can be expected for 25 out of the 30 days of the month. That being said, it usually does not rain the entire day but plans for outdoor activities may be dampened by strong winds, flash floods and other inconveniences. The best time to visit Kuching is between June to July. These are the driest months. June is also the month when the Rainforest Music Festival is held.
  • Practicalities: Outside of Kuching’s arcaded streets of Jalan Carpenter, Jalan India, Main Bazaar and Jalan Padungan; most of Kuching’s streets offer little shelter from the heat and the rain. As such, if you walk outdoors during the day; you’ll most likely be baked under the sun. It’s wise to put sunblock even if you’re just staying within the city.
  • Farther afield: Kuching serves as a hub for Borneo so if there’s an interest in exploring more, you can fly to Brunei and Labuan . Sibu and Miri are also reachable by air. Kota Kinabalu is roughly 1 hour by air.

Where to Stay in Kuching

Budget: The Meritin Hotel is an affordable 3-star hotel located in Jalan Padungan, a street filled with quaint shops, cafes and restaurants. Rooms are clean, functional and for families wishing to stay together, they have a Family Room category featuring 2 double beds.

Midrange: When it comes to location, it’s hard to find any other hotel with a better address than The Waterfront Hotel Kuching . The hotel is located right smack in the middle of town, in between Jalan India and Jalan Carpenter. The waterfront is 3 minutes walk and the Old Court House is directly beside it. The main museums are 2 blocks away. Rooms here are spacious and they also have a Family Room category with 2 double beds. The small supplement for a river facing room is well worth the upgrade and you can watch the nightly light show from the comfort of your room.

You can also check for the best deals for hotels in Kuching here .

kuching trip itinerary

Surrounded by a concrete jungle day in and out, I often yearn for the outdoors and nature. With only 3 days to spare for a short getaway, I found just the perfect place to stretch out my limbs and get the adrenaline pumping.

In East Malaysia, there lies a lesser-known outdoor adventure playground disguised as a food paradise waiting for people to explore. Malay for “cat”, the city of Kuching has more than its cats that captivates.

Cradled by the dense rainforests of Borneo , Kuching flaunts her ecologically-rich flora and fauna, with a myriad of mini adventures for outdoor lovers. The best part is that it’s only a 90-minute flight away! A perfect quick getaway to get active and reconnect with nature.

*Pro-tip:  Ask your local Grab drivers for recommendations. They often have loads of suggestions, from things to do to their favourite food haunts.

Arrive in Kuching at night

Upon arrival in Kuching at 9:55pm, we checked into our cosy accommodation, the  Kuching Waterfront Lodge  — a refurbished Chinese shophouse that looks almost like a museum with retained vintage furniture.

Do note that orangutan sightings are lower during the following months – between November to February when it’s the Monsoon seasons, and also during the fruiting months of March to June.

Skulls at longhouse - Kuching Itinerary

It’s hard to imagine that this lazy village was once home to people of such colourful albeit gruesome traditions and practices in the past. While the village still houses the community, parts of it have been commercialised as a tourist attraction. There’s not much to do here, so if you’re rushing for time, we recommend getting the other packages.

We did two different trails in a day and felt really good being in nature, away from technology and other first-world disturbances. No need to take additional days of annual leaves just because of awkward flight timings.

Also, with roomy seats comparable to full-service airlines, a flight on Scoot is sure to be a comfortable one!

Singapore-Malaysia Land and Air Travel Rules from 1 April 2022 — New Vaccinated Travel Framework

While I have been to Malaysia only for once, I never heard about or explored this lovely adventurous site called Kuching. Your wordings and the pictures show how beautiful this place is and what I missed. The Kuching Waterfront Lodge looks like a vintage resort. I am sure the rooms would be as beautiful as the picture. The hanging organtun is impressive. It’s fantastic to take the guided kayaking tour amidst such a wonderful atmosphere. I would definitely like to visit Annah Rais Longhouse and see the real human skulls in a cage. The Fairy Cave and Bako National Park are irresistible.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this blog! We went to Kuching over the recent Hari Raya weekend and basically followed this itinerary (although Baki National Park was full for overnight stays, so we just did a day trip). The information is great, and we had such a wonderful time.

Happy to hear that Gillian!

Do we need to engage a driver or how can we move around there?

If you got a driver who is good, could you pls recommend to us with his contact pls? Thanks!

Hi Joyce, We got around Kuching on Grab and Uber, they are cheaper than regular taxis too! If you’re going to Bako National Park, there’s a public bus that goes to the Bako ferry terminal within an hour 🙂 -Edelyn

I will be going on Sunday for 2 night 3 days. Any suggestions. Like to see more in short time. Thanks

You can follow our itinerary! Just remove whatever does not work. You might not have time for the National Park.

Kuching itinerary: Day 2

Starting your second day with Sarawak Laksa Rice Vermicelli, a traditional dish dating back over 1000 years of Sarawak people. The noodle dish is somewhat similar to our Hue beef noodle soup, with the broth being a mixture of greasy coconut milk and fish broth to create a light sweet taste, especially completely without using curry powder, so the broth is usually clearer and not yellow.

Places Of Interest In Kuching, Sarawak: Attractions & Itinerary

Kuching is one of the cities that I love to be in as the people are friendly, the food is cheap and it has a lot of green landscapes. In this post, I’ll share Places Of Interest in Kuching and the things to do so you can maximize your time whilst in Kuching.

Nestled on the scenic banks of the Sarawak River, at the southwestern apex of the captivating Borneo island, lies Kuching, the City of Kuching. Revered as the cultural and administrative hub of the Sarawak state in Malaysia, this city boasts a thriving population of 325,132 people.

BEST Kuching Attractions

I would recommend that you spend at least 5 Days and 4 Nights (the longer better) to enjoy all the Kuching attractions.

In a nutshell, below are top Kuching attractions and If you don’t have the time or budget, you can always skip some places and/or modify the itinerary accordingly.

Why Kuching is called Kuching?

The name of the city,  Kuching , is thought to derive from the Malay word kucing, meaning cat. Many of the locals refer to  Kuching  as the “Cat City” but it more likely comes from the Chinese word for port (“cochin”) coupled with the Malay name mata kucing (cat’s-eye) for the longan fruit, a popular trade item

The list above is arranged based on the distance to one and another so you can save up on your time. I’ll now share you the details of the Kuching Attractions places below:

Kuching Attractions Trip Itinerary

Cat Statue

Take a photo at the famous Kuching’s city icon, the cat statue.

Location: Google Map

Tugu Pahlawan (Warrior Monument)

Tugu Pahlawan, also called the War  Memorial, is a memorial behind the Sarawak Museum. It was erected to commemorate fallen heroes from all the past wars involving Sarawak

Old Courthouse

The Old Courthouse is one of many colonial buildings that are a lasting legacy of Sarawak`s unique colonial history dominated by the Brooke family / the White Rajahs .

Fort Margherita (Brooke’s gallery)

Fort Margherita (Brooke's gallery)

Fort Margherita was built in 1879 by Charles Brooke, the first White Rajah of Sarawak and named after his wife Margaret, the Ranee of Sarawak. This landmark building located on a hill on the northern side of the Sarawak River, was built to help protect Kuching from unwelcome attacks from pirates. Today the fort has been fully restored and houses the Brooke Museum which showcases some of the history of Sarawak and the White Rajahs

Kuching Waterfront

The Kuching Waterfront is the most popular gathering place in this capital city. The esplanade stretches for about 900 meters along the south bank of the Sarawak river.

Don’t miss out the musical fountain show around 8.30PM from this bridge on weekends. It’s beautiful.

Sarawak Cultural Village

This is the place you need to come to experience Sarawak culture. You can see a replica of different kinds of houses and experience the lifestyle. The theatre was the main attraction, it included traditional dances and blowpipe demonstration.

Entrance Fee: RM65 Adult, RM 30 Children (2020 Promo)

The theatre shows are at 11 AM and 4:30 PM. Don’t be late because you don’t want to miss it! Check out the video below from 0:14 – 2:44 which I’ve taken during my Borneo Ride .

Damai Beach

Located just next to Sarawak cultural village, you can chill here in the evening you miss the sea.

Cat Museum

I underestimated this place but from paintings to statutes, pictures, ornaments & taxidermy, there is a lot of info to take in! Not being huge cat fan, I still found this quite interesting.

  • Entrance Fee: RM 3

Shopping at Main Bazaar

Located opposite of Waterfront, you can buy all types of local souvenir here. I would highly recommend that you get the local design shirt/dress as it’s unique. You can also get instant laksa Sarawak here.

Bako National Park

Just a short gateway from city bustles, taking a speed boat crossing over river and sea to reach the island Bako. Surrounded by the beautiful Rocky Mountains, forest wild animals mainly wild boars. You can either stay there or make a day trip.

Semenggoh Nature Reserve

There are 32 orang-utans here in 10,000 hectares of forest and so the probability of seeing one of these creatures is pretty remote. Combine this with the fact that between November and April there is enough food in the forest then there is very little chance of seeing them at all. So this can be tricky and waste of time, you’ve been warned.

Fairy Cave in Bau

Easily the most impressive cave I’ve ever seen. Part of the ceiling is collapsed, creating a massive green skylight; it indeed looks like a fairy tale.

You will need to climb 3 floors for staircase before entering the opening of the caves and invited with more stairs into a dark tunnel. Right after, you’ll be amazed by the beautiful caves with many different sites that you can explore. I would recommend to come in the morning so that You have more time to explore. Please ensure your phone is installed with torchlight. Sone part can be slippery, better to wear proper shoes. Bring cameras that can capture dark spots.

Siniawan Night Market

Located about 25 KM away from Kuching, it’s a must place to experience the local night market for a foodie. The old wooden shop houses flanking the street is charming and the food selection is good too. Come earlier and see the sights of the town as well, like the little jetty that the locals used to cross the river.

Note: If you’re going here, make sure you arrange cab/taxi/grab on your way back in advance because it’s difficult to get one from Siniawan to Kuching. Alternatively, you can stay at the Tian Xia homestay at the night market area. (Just Google it)

Where To stay In Kuching?

If you fancy comfortable hotels, waterfront area would be the place and If you’re on a budget, stay at carpenter street which is not far away from the Waterfront.

How Do You Get Around in Kuching?

You can easily get around Kuching by taxi, Grab or hire a personal driver.

If you prefer to drive on your own, I would suggest that you rent a car from Ajim ( +60128848842 ) as he provides excellent service. For navigation, you can use Google Maps or Waze.

What & Where To Eat In Kuching?

Best laksa sarawak / kolo mee in kuching.

Laksa Sarawak is a local food that you must try! I’ve tried a few places and I would recommend the top two places for the best Laksa and Kolo mee

Chong Choon Cafe

Chong Choon Cafe

For me the Laksa here is a little bit spicy but you would love it! The place closes at 12 Noon, so be early!

Choon Hui Cafe

Choon Hui Cafe

The Laksa here has more (thick) flavour and less spicy. It can be crowded here and I would suggest that you go here early.

Feast & Furious Cafe

If you’re looking for a cafe for your coffee fix, delicious western food or even laksa, this is the best place to be. Owned by multi-talented proud Sarawakian, Alex Stmrock Wong who is also the founder of the Borneo Blowpipe Run .

This cafe has a great atmosphere especially for motor enthusiasts and I would highly recommend that you check this place out as it’s just within walking distance from the waterfront.

Aladdin Chicken Rice Shop

Aladdin Chicken Rice Shop

Located in the Carpenter street, I would suggest that you try out their roasted chicken here. For me, it is tasty and said to be the best chicken rice shop in Kuching. (They might be!)

Kek Lapis (layer cake)

Mira Cake House

Your visit to Kuching would not complete without trying out the Kek Lapis. Mira Cake House offers great choices for you to choose from and they also offer free testing.

Tips: From the waterfront, you can a take a boat ride across the river and walk to Mira Cake house. The ride will cost you RM1/pax (one way). The boat station is located at the back of Gloria Jean’s Coffees White Barouk .

Kuching Bars

The bikalan.

The Bikalan Kuching

As I’ve travelled quite extensively in South East Asia, I must say Bikalan in Siniawan Night Market is one of my favourite bars that I’ve been to. Situated just about 25KM from Kuching city, Bikalan is a laid back bar, serving authentic local cuisine and they offer a great range of alcohol/foods to fill up your night. Their food/drinks pricings are quite affordable and we really enjoyed the Bikalan, you don’t get this kind of atmosphere anywhere in Malaysia. Imagine having a good draught beer next to a river in a Belian wood shop house in Siniawan’s historic main bazaar.

The owners (Andy & Grace) are down to the earth person. If you’re going there, ask Andy about the history of the place, he would love to explain it to you.

Bear Garden

Bear Garden Kuching

Probably the cheapest bar and walking distance from the Waterfront! Bear Garden is one of the very few places within Kuching that you can grab a much need beer during the day whilst out sightseeing.

The staff are really friendly and welcoming. A great little bar which gets busy in the evening. We had such a good experience we made sure it was our regular watering hole for the trip. They also serve food which is great value for money and homemade. They also do amazing work supporting local animal conservation projects. Well worth a visit.

Drunk Monkey Old Street Bar

Drunk Monkey Old Street Bar

If you choose to wander along Carpenter Street (near the waterfront), there are numerous bars and the Drunk Monkey is one of them. The staff are efficient and they have a large selection of drinks available. Highly recommend it.

Kuching is definitely a destination I would recommend if you aren’t looking for somewhere too commercialised, but rather a place that has some character and culture to it. Have you been to Kuching? Which Kuching attractions you liked the most?

Kuching Travel Guide

The state capital of Sarawak on the island of Borneo, Kuching is one of my favourite places in Malaysia. Located on the Sarawak River, this city has a beautiful riverfront area which deserves a stroll at least every evening you are in town.

There is more to Kuching than its river, however. Kuching means cat in Malay and you’ll want to keep your eyes open for cat statues throughout your time in this city. It’s lots of fun. There’s also a fun cat museum essential for everyone who loves cats or who likes a laugh.

There’s many museums and other attractions although some people would say the best attractions are outside the city. There are numeous day trips you can do from Kuching like visiting orangutans, learning local customs and spending time in national parks. You won’t be bored.

It is a 1 hour flight from Miri to Kuching and a 2 hour flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching. Kuching is well known for its food, sites and rich history. Want to know more about Kuching? 4 Days Travel Guide in Kuching – Sarawak

Now, a brief of history on Kuching and Sarawak. Kuching was given to James Brooke in 1841 by the Brunei as a token of appreciation for helping to fend off attacks from rebellions. After having survived the invasions during World War 2 by the Japanese (1942-1945), the last  Rajah of Sarawak, Sir Charles Vyner Brooke ceded Sarawak to Britain, and designated Sarawak under the  British Crown Colony.  In 1963, Sarawak, which includes Kuching joined in the formation of Malaysia and was given the state capital status.

Enough with the history, let’s get on with the interesting part. For those who would like to explore Kuching we recommend staying here for at least 3-5 days depending on your activities and places you want to cover. And it would be much easier to rent a car, as most places outside Kuching area requires long distance to cover unless you are travelling with a tour.

Located in the heart of Kuching is the cat statue as seen below. Its not hard to miss, it is about 5-10 minutes walk here from India Street. Just walk along Kuching waterfront and head right all the way till you see hotels and this cat statue here. There are a few cat statues scattered in the city centre of Kuching. See if you are able to spot them !

After doing a bit of ‘cat spotting’, we headed to  Kuching Waterfront which is the most popular tourist attraction in Kuching. Along the waterfront, there are various stalls and bistros which you can quench you appetite as you walk along the Sarawak river bank.

Across the river you will be able to see Astana which is where the governor resides and also Fort Margherita (constructed in 1879 by Charles Brooke) which stands out in white. To get across the river you can take the ‘sampan’ a river taxi manned by the locals with a small fee of only Rm1 per trip across the river. On the other side of the river, you can explore the Brooke Gallery or explore the DBKU orchid garden.

We took the trip across the river and also took the opportunity to buy some ‘kek lapis’ or layered cake which is well-known in Sarawak. The ‘kek lapis’ is a sweet layered cake which is made of various layers, patterns or shapes and would make a perfect souvenir to take home or share with your loved ones.

We also took the chance to walk on the Darul Hana suspension bridge which is free and offers a bird’s eye view of the majestic Sarawak River. In the evening, Kuching Waterfront is usually filled with buskers playing all sorts of music. Make sure you don’t miss the light shows when you are here.

Show times :-

1st show – 8.30 pm to 8.45 pm,

2nd show – 10.00 pm to 10.15 pm

Just beside Kuching Waterfront is the Kuching Old Courthouse which was constructed in 1868 to be used as an administrative centre for the government of Sarawak. Today, the building is used as a tourism complex, cultural and art exhibition, concert space and to host many other events.

If you like to explore historical landmarks, we suggest you head to the Hero Monument at the Sarawak Museum on the second day here. The war memorials here was erected to pay respects to the fallen heroes during World War 2. It is a 10 minute drive from the Kuching Waterfront and easy to spot.

Also located just beside the Hero Monument is the Sarawak Museum which is definitely a must see if you are here. Built in 1891, the Sarawak Museum displays specimens of Sarawak’s fauna and wildlife on the ground floor. On the first floor, artefacts from all the ethnics groups in Sarawak is displayed such as longhouse models, boat models, musical instruments and handicraft.

Just beside the Sarawak Museum is the Art Museum which dates back in 1949 and displays various books, documentation and paintings.  The Sarawak Museum & Art Museum is opened from :

Monday – Friday

9:00 am – 4:45 pm

Saturday, Sunday, Public Holidays

10:00 am – 4:00 pm

However, at the time of writing, both the museums are undergoing renovations so please check before coming here to avoid any disappointment.

If you would like to cool off after the first 2 days exploring Kuching why not head over to the Borneo Samariang Water Park on the third day. It takes approximately 30 minutes drive from the city centre to the water park. The water park opened its doors in 2018 and is the 1st Sarawak water themed park.

Entrance Fees

We arrived the water park at 10am and by 2pm we were exhausted from all the rides here. The water park in my opinion is a great place for locals to relax and enjoy, however it would be better if there was more rides to try out. We had our lunch at the water park and changed into dry clothes before heading to the next place on our itinerary, the Cat Museum.

Once you arrive at the peak of Borneo Highland, you will be greeted with the lush beauty of the flowers and fresh air. If you are a guest at the hotel, you can proceed straight to the resort. As we both did not intend to stay the night, we took the resort buggy to the Kalimantan view point which costs us RM 10 per trip. The view point is the border which separates Sarawak and Kalimantan, offering a bird’s eye view of Kalimantan.

Nice writing. Love it especially the passport. There is a little privilege of being a Sarawakian. Lol.

I wonder.. does the kek lapis have different flavours or just different colours? If yes, what is your favourite flavour?

The kek lapis do have different type of flavours. So far, my favourite would be Masam Manis (Sweet & Sour) one.

kuching trip itinerary

It's easy to see why the colonialist ruler Raja Brooke chose this spot for his capital. Hugging the curves of the languid Sungai Sarawak, Kuching was an ideal trading post between other Asian sea ports and Borneo's interior. It's still a gateway to both jungle and sea, and Kuching’s proximity to national parks makes it the ideal base for day trips to wild coastal and rainforest destinations.

Bako national park.

Opening Hours: Open from 8:00am-5:00pm

Ticket Price: 10 MYR

Recommended Length of Stay: 0.5-1 Days

Location: Sarawak, Malaysia

The park is a historic national park in Sarawak, famous for its Seasnack stones, pitcher plants and wild monkeys. Cliffs, horns, bays, beaches, etc. are widely distributed in the park, with various landforms. After thousands of years of sea water erosion, the park is distributed with cliffs, horns, bays, beaches and other landforms. The world-renowned animals such as long-armed monkeys, long-tailed macaques, and silver langurs are the protagonists of the park. The original tropical rainforest and dense mangroves also make it worthy of being one of the oldest rainforests in the world.

Reviews from Real Guests:

Roger Chia: Recommended for day trip. Great tracking routes but need good maintenance. For sure able to see Proboscis monkeys. Have stayed at bungalow chalet at the park. Beware no hot shower, poor beddings & need good upgrading. Park has basic canteen food & shop. Ensure its high tide when boarding boat to the park & upon leaving the park, otherwise has to wait for 1-2 hours or longer for the sea tide to rise.

Trip.com User: I love so much this place..i like hiking & explore the place..The place is peace and love the surrounding.

The cultural village has a quiet environment and beautiful scenery. There are traditional longhouses and various styles of residences of the seven major ethnic groups in Sarawak, namely Ulu, Punam, Malano, Iban, Bidayu, Malay and Chinese. They are all built with raw materials such as salt wood, bamboo, rattan, and yada leaves, giving people the feeling of a primitive village. In this "living museum", each house has ethnic artists in traditional costumes busy doing handicrafts and explaining their way of life to tourists, and there are often demonstrations of handicraft making and dance and music performances of various ethnic groups in the village. . A visit to the Sarawak Cultural Village is a cultural journey, where you can deeply feel the rich cultural heritage of Sarawak. After visiting the cultural village, the fun is to sit in the theater and watch the dance performances of various ethnic groups. The programs are colorful and popular. Each dance performance is actually a wonderful performance of national costumes, which is not only a vivid portrayal of Sarawak civilization, but also brings tourists the information of multi-ethnic harmony.

There are now 24 orangutans in the center, each with its own name. 09:00 and 15:00 are the feeding times every day. The staff will put the fruit on the platform and ask the orangutan to climb down to find food. When watching orangutans, remember to keep quiet, and remember to wear cloth shoes, raincoats, mosquito repellant and a long lens.
