The first years of this decade have already provided ample evidence that it’s important to get away from our daily lives from time to time. And you don’t have to suffer the airport hordes or step foot on a plane to do so. We currently find ourselves in something of a golden age for luxury trailers, which has made it easier than ever to take your life on the road without sacrificing many, and in some cases any, of the comforts of home. And now, there are plenty of manufacturers and dedicated conversion shops giving the same treatment to vans and other similar vehicles. They may not be able to sleep as many people as their hulking cousins—with one key exception—but these all-in-one wonders come loaded with perks such as high-end kitchens, Wi-Fi-enabled multimedia systems, and plush beds. Plus, their relatively smaller size means they are more agile, off-road friendly, and easier to park. Below are 15 campers that will let you experience #vanlife in comfort and style.

Airstream. Thankfully, the company isn’t afraid to branch out. Just look at the Interstate 24X , the trailer maker’s attempt to take the camper van to new heights. Built on the bones of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter—like a lot of the models on this list—the vehicle has everything you need to rough it in comfort. Airstream has done a lot to maximize space in its climate-controlled cabin. A modular dining table doubles as a desk, and it can be easily converted into the largest sleeping area in a Class B Motorhome. There’s also a full mini kitchen and bathroom. You can take the van off-roading, too. In addition to a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 engine that churns out 188 hp and 325 ft lbs of torque, it also comes equipped with four-wheel drive, a height-adjustable suspension and all-terrain tires. Pricing for the all-around beast starts at $213,850.

Special Features: —A climate-controlled living area that has been designed to maximize available space. —A modular dinner table, a mini-kitchen and a bathroom with a toilet.
Jayco is best known for its hulking travel trailers, but like Airstream, it can do compact, too (well, compact enough to fit in a parking space, that is). The US company’s new Terrain model, which starts at $192,000, is an adventure van designed for those who like to veer from the beaten path. As the name suggests, it’s designed for off-roading, with a turbo-diesel V-6, Koni shocks, a rear stabilizer and a rear hitch strong enough to tow an additional trailer if you need more room. Inside, it’s a little spartan compared to some other options on this list, but its kitchenette can be converted into a sleeping area with room for a full-size bed, as well as plenty of storage space beneath. There’s even a built-in awning when you need some shade in the summer months.

Mercedes-Benz clearly doesn’t want to relinquish its title as the go-to van maker for outdoor lovers. At last year’s Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, the German marque showed off a prototype based on its upcoming all-electric EQT van called the Marco Polo. The stylish EV has everything you need for a weekend at the campground and is more compact than the ubiquitous Sprinter. When the van’s rear seats are folded down, the back can be used as either a sleeping area with room for a double bed or a cooking and entertaining space. The kitchen doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of some of the other entries on this list, but it does have a pull-out stove, fridge and sink. There’s also a pop-up, roof-mounted tent if your travel party includes more than two. The Marco Polo is a concept, but Mercedes will sell a module that will allow you to turn any EQT into a camper van when the $51,500 EV goes on sale in the spring.

Special Features: —All-electric power train, so you don’t have to worry about doing too much damage to nature while you explore it. —Its camping gear—from the bed to the kitchenette—is part of a module that can be fully removed when you need more cargo room.
The Winnebago Solis is for adventurers who don’t want to be confined to the campground. The van is available with an optional power kit that has everything a group of up to four adults needs to spend a few days off-the-grid. The setup, which includes an inverter, a shore battery converter, a battery energy converter, a solar energy converter and an alternator energy optimizer, can produce enough power to keep the van and all its features running for up to 72 hours. On top of that, the van features a kitchenette, a convertible entertainment area with room for a double bed, and a full-width wet bath.

If you like to mix biking and camping, Outside Van has the vehicle for you. The Portland brand’s Tails model is a camper van designed with cyclists in mind. The van, which is based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, has everything you need for a few days away from home, including a kitchenette, a roll-over sofa and a convertible mattress. But what really sets it apart is the rear of the vehicle that’s basically an on-the-go bicycle repair shop, with a fold-down work table, an air compressor and Molle panels to hang all your tools. If that wasn’t enough, it somehow has room for six bikes, even when the bed is laid out for the night.

Special Features: —The back of the van is basically a bicycle-repair shop with a fold-down table, an air compressor and plenty of storage space for tools. —Has room for six bikes, even when its convertible sleeping area is out.
This latest offering from Storyteller Overland, based in Birmingham, Ala., is a true adventure van. The Beast Mode 4×4 is the outfit’s most feature-packed model yet and was designed specifically for overlanding (as you may have guessed from the company’s name). It’s a true 4×4 powered by a 188 hp turbodiesel V-6 that’s strong enough to tow an additional 5,000 pounds. Its slick retro-style livery is offset with loads of useful off-roading gear, too, such as an LED light package, a roof rack and a side ladder and custom wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich K02 tires. Inside, you’ll find everything you need to relax after a day of exploring, including a cushy lounge that can be converted to a full-size sleeping area. There’s even a climate-control system to ensure you’re comfortable no matter the weather outside. It’s priced at a flat $198,746, for everything listed above.

Let’s get this out of the way: the Loki Expeditions Discovery Series isn’t technically a camper van. It’s a giant expedition vehicle, but because its cabin is installed directly onto a heavy-duty truck chassis you also don’t need anything to tow it. The vehicle’s cabin is what separates it from anything else on this list. Loki Expeditions has turned a shipping container—yes, you read that right—into a full-featured living space that has all the amenities you’d expect to find in a luxury apartment, including a full kitchen with a large fridge, an entertainment area with a U-shaped banquet, and a wet bath with a cassette toilet. It’s also big enough to sleep six adults, with room for two in the dedicated bedroom and four in the entertainment area. And because the heavy-duty vehicle, which starts at $550,000, has all-wheel drive, you can take it practically anywhere.

Looking for an EV you can take to the campground. The upcoming EQV just might fit the bill. Despite its relatively compact size—it’s smaller than the ever-popular Sprinter—Dutch camping outfit Tonke has managed to outfit it with everything you need to spend some time communing with nature. It has an entertainment area that doubles as a workspace along with a kitchenette, both of which can be converted into a two-person sleeping area with a simple flip of a bench (a roof-mounted, pop-up tent means it can sleep two more, too). Best of all, there are two variants available—the Touring, which is designed for long road trips, and the Adventure, which is aimed at casual campers.
Inside the Tonke EQV Touring
Special Features: —Fully electronic power train means you won’t have to worry about filling up the tank (though the battery is another story). —Can sleep up to four even despite its relatively compact size.
Best for G-Wagen Lovers: Terracamper Tecrawl
The Tecrawl isn’t a camper van per se, but it’s hard to leave something this cool off a list like this. Terracamper’s latest offering is based on one of Mercedes-Benz’s most legendary vehicles, the G-Wagen . The German shop has dreamed up a modular accessory kit for the luxury 4×4, that starts at $11,900 and includes a roof-mounted tent, a convertible sofa, and a pull-out kitchenette with a fridge box. Thanks to the ingenious setup, the boxy SUV can sleep up to three and act as your home base next time you want to rough it for the weekend. And because it’s a G-Wagen you can take it as far off-road as you want.
Terracamper Tecrawl

Special Features: —A G-Wagen but has room for up to three people to sleep. —Packs a brawny powertrain that’s well-suited for off-road adventures.
Thor Motor Coach makes camper vans for those uninterested in making sacrifices. With the Sanctuary , the company has taken Mercedes-Benz’s already excellent Sprinter 2500 4×4 and turned it into something you could easily live on—on or off the grid. The off-road-ready vehicle comes in two configurations—the 19P ($148,680), which features a back bench that converts into a bed, or the 19L ($151,060), which has a fixed double bed. Even with the bed there’s still plenty of room for other creature comforts, including a bathroom, an entertainment area with a TV and a kitchen with a sink, a dual-burner cooktop, a convection microwave oven and a fridge. An Onan 2500 LP generator keeps everything up and running, too, including an A/C system you can leave on for eight hours at a time. There’s also retractable power awning when you want to spend some time outdoors.

Caravan Outfitter’s third-generation Free Bird isn’t the most feature-laden camper van out there, but it has everything you and the family need to spend a weekend (or more) at the campground. The van, which starts at $50,810, is built on the relatively compact Ford Transit Connect platform but still has room for a full-size bed, a multi-purpose table that can be used as a dinette or workstation, and a pull-out kitchenette with a sink. Because it’s smaller than other options on this list, it only has room to sleep two, but there are several enticing add-ons, including roof- and rear-mounted capsule tents, in case you’re traveling group includes more people.

Special Features: —It’s the rare camper van that’s small enough to be comfortably parked inside your garage. —Caravan Outfitters offers several intriguing add-ons so you customize it to your liking.
Airstream isn’t the only famous RV maker that’s gotten into the camper van game. Winnebago actually sells several, and our favorite is the luxe Boldt . Despite being nowhere near as long as one of its campers—it caps out at 22 feet in length—the $230,276 van has everything you’d expect from the larger vehicle, including dedicated living and sleeping areas, a fully functional kitchen and a bathroom equipped with a shower. You also have several interior decor options to choose from, each of which delivers an updated take on classic Winnebago style. The Boldt is designed for paved roads and campgrounds, but if you want a more rugged ride, the brand also offers the off-road-ready Revel.
Inside the Boldt
Special Features: —Stretches 22 feet bumper to bumper, meaning there’s plenty of room for you and yours. —Enough space for dedicated entertaining and sleeping areas.
Take one look at Sportsmobile’s Sprinter 4×4 and it’s clear what its designers had in mind: off-roading. Whether you go with the 12- or 14-foot configuration, the Texas outfit’s stripped-down take on Mercedes’s ultra-popular van comes equipped with a 3.0-liter BlueTec V-6 connected to a five-speed automatic transmission and pumps out 188 hp and 325 ft lbs of torque. That should be more than enough to tackle even the toughest terrain. Inside, you’ll find a spacious living area with a full-featured kitchen. If you want even more room, you can also opt for a pop-up sleeping area that’ll make it that much easier to lounge in comfort.

Special Features: —Well insulated throughout, but also has space for a propane furnace or heater. — 3.0-liter BlueTec V-6 and four-wheel drive mean it can take on any terrain.
Struggling to find a camper van that’s just right? Boho might be able to help. The Arizona-based company specializes in conversions and will work with you to create the vehicle of your dreams. The company offers several 20- to 24-foot layouts—of which the most popular is the appropriately named Old Faithful—that can be further tailored to meet your needs, whether your priority is multi-season versatility, lots of cooking space, or spending serious amounts of time on the road. The company also offers plenty of cool add-ons too, like wood paneling and flooring.

Ford’s ready to knock the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter off its perch. The Detroit giant unveiled its own camper van, the Transit Trail, last fall. The adventure-ready vehicle is based on its uber-popular commercial van but is taller, wider and outfitted with protective body cladding. It’s also powered by a potent V-6 that sends 310 horses and 400 ft lbs to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Right now, Ford seems content to let the $65,975 vehicle be the base for the camper van of your dreams, but it comes loaded with a slew of features that will come in handy at the campground, including a drillable wall you can use to install shelves, a kitchenette or furniture, along with a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen and a back-up camera. It also available in three body configurations—medium-roof, standard length; high-roof, standard length; and high-roof, extended length—one of which should fit your needs.
Inside the Transit Trail
Special Features: —It’s basically a blank slate for you and your partner to create your own dream camper. —Still comes with premium features such as a 12-inch infotainment screen and a back-up camera.

If you need even more space, then the bed can fold away, allowing more storage area when in transit. In the living space, you’ll find a galley kitchen, a seating area that converts into a second bed, storage, and a toilet. There is even a hidden camper shower system, giving you the luxury of a hot indoor or outdoor shower after a day on the trail!
The Storyteller Overland MODE would make a great van for any vandwellers wanting to upgrade to a monster camper off-road rig.
2. Winnebago Revel 4×4
The Winnebago Revel 4×4 is another all terrain camper that has earned a spot on our list of the best adventure vans of 2020. It’s chock-full of off-road capabilities that allow you to easily take the road less traveled.
The Revel 4×4 features a rugged roof rack to transport any adventure gear that won’t fit inside the camper van. You can access it via ladder, which is where you’ll also find solar panels to fuel your gadgets on the go. Finally, an electronic awning doubles your living space and gives you some shade from the elements.
One of the most unique features of this adventure bus is the power lift bed. This allows you to raise the comfortable double bed to the ceiling of the van. At the press of a button, you open up a massive 140 cubic ft. garage, perfect for all your van life essentials.
The rest of the interior clearly keeps adventure firmly in mind; the flooring, cabinets, wall coverings, and seats are all made out of easy-to-clean materials, so don’t worry too much how wet or muddy you are when you get back to your home base. As well as the bed, this camper features a full kitchen with hob, sink and fridge, seating areas with table and front swivel seats, gear closet and wet bath, as well as overhead storage.
The Winnebago Revel 4×4 starts at $163,292.
3. Adventure Truck XT
Next up on our list of the best adventure vans we have the Adventure Truck XT . Aptly named, these off road trucks are built with a long expedition in mind and are perfect if you’re planning a long overland trip to remote corners of the earth.
The Adventure Truck XT is ideal for living off the grid long term, as they can be fitted out and upgraded to suit your needs. Whether your camper base model is a pick-up truck or something a little larger, the modular Adventure Truck XT kit attaches directly to the vehicle.
The spacious interior of the Adventure Truck XT is perfect for full-time truck life . There’s enough room to compare directly to a small apartment!
An over-cab sleeping area allows the main space of the camper to be utilised as a living space. And the camper comes complete with a full kitchen, bathroom, a dining area that converts into an extra bed, plus heaps of storage.
The Adventure Truck XT also has heating and air conditioning that runs off of the solar electrical set up. This camper can even be fitted with a washing machine, which is perfect if you plan on living off grid for months on end.
Prices for the Adventure Truck XT start at $368,000.
4. Mitsubishi 4WD Terrain
Small campers have many benefits; they’re often more affordable, more fuel-efficient, and are easy to drive and park. Pair the benefits of a compact driving experience with a full 4×4 conversion, and you have the perfect adventure campervan for exploring those off-road tracks.
Enter a treat for the small van fan, the Mitsubishi 4WD Terrain .
This Mitsubishi camper van is built on a Delica base, with a switchable 4WD option to give you full control on and off the road.
While the Mitsubishi 4WD Terrain may be small, it still has room to sleep and seat four–ideal for traveling with kids or friends.
Two can sleep on the double bed in the pop-top roof, with two on the rock and roll bed downstairs. That rock and roll bed also doubles as a seat-belted seating area, providing a safe space for extra passengers.
The kitchenette can be used to whip up campervan recipes either inside or out, meaning you can create delicious meals on the go no matter what the weather throws at you.
This great little camper is affordable too, coming in at a starting price of £27,995.
5. Cascade by Outside Van
We’re halfway through our list of the best adventure vans, and at number five we have the Cascade by Outside Van ! These folks are the masters of custom vans , letting you control exactly what you would like in your conversion.
A Ford Transit chassis constitutes the base for this camper. It comes complete with a 4×4 conversion, tyre and wheel upgrades, safari roof rack, extra exterior lighting, ladders, and an L-track mounting system. Outside Van have also mounted a roof tent to the top of the camper, creating an extra ‘bedroom’ perfect for kids or friends to come on the road with you.
Inside the camper is plush yet rugged, with all of the comforts of home ready and waiting for your next road trip. At the back of the van is a large double bed with a garage storage area below.
This storage tucks away from the rest of the van behind the two extra passenger seats at the foot of the bed. Beyond the seats is the kitchen which includes a sink, hob, fridge, and storage space.
We love the materials and colours used in this van; it stands out from the crowd and looks more homely than many off road campers that prioritise function over form.
Prices vary depending on conversion, so contact Outside Van for more information!
6. Zion by Roadtrek
At number six on our list of the best adventure vans, we have Zion from Roadtrek . The Zion is built on a Ram Promaster chassis, seats up to five, and can sleep three (unlucky if you’re passengers four and five!)
This build is perfect if you are looking for a more versatile interior space in your campervan and need less storage for gear.
The bed at the back of this camper van converts into a large seating area, with two comfortable bench seats running along both walls. These seats are perfect for lounging around in the day, with more space to entertain friends (or keep your kids occupied on a rainy day). At night, the benches can be flattened into a comfortable double bed, with a single bed set up in the cab are.
Beyond the bed is a kitchen and lots of storage cupboards for clothes and other essentials. If you do need to carry gear on board, this can be stored in the central aisle of the camper and removed once you park up.
Roadtrek’s Zion camper is great for trips all year round with a propane furnace to keep your warm in the colder months. After all, a good heating system in a camper is essential to stop the cold becoming a barrier to getting outdoors.
The Zion camper van starts at $101,681.
7. Project M by Four Wheel Campers
Pop up campers are perfect for anyone who just wants to get out into the wild and isn’t too bothered about having all the bells and whistles. And that’s exactly what you get with the Project M Truck Camper by Four Wheel Campers: Simplicity.
Moreover, this is an affordable adventure vessel for exploring the world, ideal for the outdoorsy (but cash-strapped) younger generation. The Project M slides onto your truck bed, so if your vehicle is compatible, there is no need to splash out on another truck. This drastically undercuts the cost of buying an RV, making road tripping more accessible to all.
The Project M gives you an over-cab bed, which can be extended to comfortably sleep two while the roof is popped open. In the most basic model, this is the main feature of the Project M–a true adventure crash pad!
The rest of the interior space is dedicated to storing your gear, or building out your conversion piece by piece. Optional extras include pre-wiring for power and lights, a roof rack for even more gear and L-track on the interior walls.
Four Wheel Campers ‘ Project M starts at just $8,995 and is a great base to use to be able to get outside.
8. Chinook Countryside
The Chinook Countryside is a luxury RV built to be the best on the road. This swish campervan may not be to everyone’s taste, but if you’re looking for a bit of decadence, then this is the camper for you.
Sporting cream leather seating and glossy veneer cabinetry, the interior of the Chinook Countryside feels like a luxury yacht. There’s plenty of seating for extra passengers, and the bench at the back folds down into a bed when it’s time for a snooze.
A full bathroom takes up one side of the camper, complete with a porcelain toilet, shower, and a retractable clothesline. Opposite this is the kitchen, where you can whip up anything from a quick snack to a full three-course meal. The kitchen comprises of a dual microwave/convection oven/grill, two-burner cooktop, sink, and fridge.
The Countryside’s Mercedes Benz Sprinter chassis can be upgraded to a 4×4 conversion, allowing you to combine luxury with the dirt road. What’s not to love!
9. Sportsmobile Classic
We’re coming to the end of our list of the best adventure vans, and at number nine we have my all-time-favourite: the Sportsmobile Classic 4×4. This is a great vehicle if you like your road trips with no limitations.
Built on a 4×4 Ford Cutaway chassis, this heavy-duty adventure van’s body is moulded with a steel-reinforced fibreglass shell for maximum durability. And, this camper has a complete and extensive off-road conversion; you can travel over dirt roads, up mountains, through ravines, and across any terrain!
For all its muscle, the Ford Cutaway is a relatively small vehicle. To make up for its compact size, Sportsmobile include a pop top penthouse roof. There’s more than enough space to stand up and move around inside.
The interior layout is customisable depending on what your needs are. Nevertheless, conversions typically include a full kitchen, a cosy sleeping area, dining area, plus plenty of space to store gear and added extras.
10. Timber Den by Outside Van
Our last camper on our list of best adventure vans is the Timber Den by Outside Van . This another excellent example of the kind of custom off-grid-paradise that the company can produce.
The Timber Den is the ultimate gear-hauling camper, with space to carry an extensive amount of equipment inside–including a motorbike! This comes thanks to an open-plan layout, with minimal ‘home comforts’. Meanwhile on the exterior, there are surf/SUP racks, plus solar panels for off-grid power.
Aside from the storage space, the interior of this campervan features two different sleeping layouts: bunk beds or a double at the back. The double bed is ideal when there is enough room around the gear; but, the bunk beds work just fine if you need the space for all of your snowboards or skis.
The camper doesn’t have a full kitchen, but it does come with a fridge for storing tasty snacks. If you want a suitable base that is well-equipped for all manner of outdoor sports, from then the Timber Den is for you.
Final Thoughts…
There are so many different adventure vans out there to suit your individual lifestyle and budgets. While the vans on this list may all vary in shape, style, size, and cost, they do have one thing in common: they will help you to get off the sofa and out there into the world!
Sure, choosing the right adventure van is important; but not as important as the journey that you will find yourself on when you’re out on the road. So what are you waiting for? Choose a van and start exploring!

A great camper van combines the maneuverability of a passenger car with the comforts of a motorhome. These are the top brands to know.
By Tyler Duffy
Camper vans are the ultimate recreational vehicles. They combine the maneuverability of a passenger car with comforts typically reserved for travel trailers and full-blown motorhomes.
Unfortunately, some of the top camper vans in the world never come to the US. The modern equivalent of the classic VW model , tantalizingly named The California , is only sold in Europe. Meanwhile, only Aussies can snag this badass, off-roading Toyota van with Land Cruiser bits .
But #vanlife is alive and well in the US. Stateside drivers still have dozens of excellent options from major manufacturers and independent builders, alike. Here are 27 to know before your next road trip.

Factors to Consider When Building a Custom Camper Van
Amenities: How are you going to use the camper van? What features do you need to accomplish that goal? What you need for the weekend “get away from it all” trips will differ from trying to live completely off-the-grid. What sort of toilet and indoor/shower setup facilities do you need?
Build Time: Build times for a custom camper van can vary from several weeks to several months. And the most popular builders will have waitlists before they can even get to your build.
Materials: You want your camper van to be durable. Like with your physical home, that means using quality materials. That may cost more at the outset but it may end up saving you in the long run.
Size: How many people are going to be camping? Where are you going to store it? Is your HOA going to throw a fit if it doesn’t fit in a standard garage? Do you need to be able to stand inside of it?
Transparency: Building a custom camper van isn’t cheap. The van alone can cost north of $50,000. The more features, customization and craftsmanship that goes into it, the more expensive the van will be on the back end. Make sure the pricing structure is upfront, clear and itemized before committing.

5 Affordable Camper Vans for Sale
This story was originally published by Curbed before it joined New York Magazine. You can visit the Curbed archive at archive.curbed.com to read all stories published before October 2020.
If Instagram has anything to say about it, #VanLife isn’t going anywhere any time soon. And that’s fine by us, especially because we can’t get enough of all things camper-related . Love campers and trailers? Come join our community group .
However, if camper vans have any drawbacks compared to teardrop trailers , vintage campers , or your run-of-the-mill travel trailers , it’s the fact that they can be expensive. Custom conversion companies are rolling out gorgeous rigs , but some of them cost over $200,000 and vans by industry heavyweights like Airstream and Winnebago both cost over $130,000 . That’s out of reach for most customers and may seem downright ridiculous to some.
Fortunately, there’s a new class of camper companies looking to deliver the van life experience but at a fraction of the cost. You’ll have to sacrifice a few things — like dreams of a 4x4 Mercedes Sprinter — but these five companies show that you can have a sweet camper van for under $70,000 — van and conversion included. This is van life on a budget.
Off Grid Adventure Vans
Cost: With 2020 Ram Promasters starting around $30,000 before options, the cost of a brand new van with Off Grid Adventure runs from about $67,000 to $70,000.
Key Features: We know $70,000 may not seem affordable to most, but Off Grid Adventure Vans aims to produce a more environmentally sustainable, budget-conscious van, and these vans are much cheaper than most conversion van companies .
The company offers four different layouts. The Rambler — which costs $36,500 for the buildout — is their most popular layout on the 159-inch Ram Promaster. In this model a full-size Murphy bed sleeps two and folds up when not in use. In its place are two long bench seats with a removable table in between for working or dining. Overhead cabinets and built-in cabinetry provide storage, while a galley kitchen includes a refrigerator, butcher block countertop, stove, and sink. Interested? Head over here to read about their other layouts.
The Free Bird
Cost: Starting at $38,100 for van and conversion
Key Features: Built on the Nissan NV200 cargo van, the Free Bird uses a convenient slide-rail system that makes switching from camper van to cargo hauler a cinch. The slide-and-glide system allows all of the components to be installed or removed in about two minutes.
The main cabin is a series of boxes that hold everything you need to camp. The kitchen is accessed from the rear in a slide-out kitchen box; it consists of a portable butane stove and two storage drawers. Another large storage box behind the front two seats houses a deep cycle auxiliary battery that powers the dimmable LED lighting, two USB power ports, and the 31-quart fridge. Head over here for more info.
Boho Camper Vans
Cost: The price of the buildout is $36,500, and vans will cost between $30,000-$37,000.
Key Features: Founded as a camper van rental company , Phoenix-based Boho Camper Vans has worked with different types of vans — like this one-ton commercial passenger van — to outfit them with a streamlined and downright Instagrammable look. With their vans in demand due to coronavirus, Boho Camper Vans have focused all production on the Boho Tall, with wood-focused interiors on a RAM 2500 High Roof 159. Each build out includes 340 watts of solar, an electric dual zone fridge, a portable toilet, and storage cabinets. The bed is located in the rear with a garage below, and there’s a small pull-out table in the sitting area. While the floorplan comes stock, you can customize the tile, floor color, interior base paint color, stain options, bedding, and curtains.
Find out more details, this way , and see examples of their builds here and here .
Oasis Campervans
Cost: A full van conversion is $8,500 , although design changes can raise or lower the price
Key Factors: Unlike other small camper van companies that use Nissan or Mercedes vans , Colorado-based Oasis Campervans converts the all-wheel-drive Toyota Sienna minivan into mobile homes-on-the-go. Oasis Campervan conversions include a main living room with pull-out drawers, a finished floor, and a moveable table for working. One of the most innovative parts of the design is a foldable chair that transforms into part of the bed with a helpful back rest, and when in the sleeping position the full-size mattress can hold one or two people comfortably.
Similar to a teardrop trailer , the van’s rear area accesses a small kitchen with a sink, running water, drawers and shelves, and a large countertop. Dinner prep is made easy thanks to a fold-up kitchen table, and in certain van layouts, the kitchen can also fit a slide-out drawer that fits a cooler or refrigerator. Head over here for more.
Cost: Core build packages start around $29,000 , plus the cost of the Promaster van — which starts around $30,000.
Key Features: San Francisco-based Glampervan wants to capitalize on this trend by building clients a “multi-use vehicle” that can take you on vacation, work as a mobile office, and still haul things like a truck. Using a 136-inch wheelbase high-roof Ram Promaster (the medium-sized model in the Ram lineup) Glampervan maximizes space with a build customized for two people.
You enter the van in a galley kitchen loaded with cabinet and storage space. In the back, a Murphy bed sits on the passenger wall and allows space to haul gear or supplies whenever you’re not resting. When in the sleeping position, the bed is just shy of a queen size, and overhead cabinets provide more storage. Read more, this way .

FAQs about van rentals
How can i find the best passenger van rentals.
Find van-tastic rentals by entering your rental destination and travel dates and speeding over to the search button. From here, you can filter your results by vehicle type, rental providers, and vehicle capacity. So, whether you’re traveling solo with cargo or with the whole gang in tow, the right ride is waiting for you. If you need a little inspiration, check out the latest van rentals available in Atlanta .
Why should I book a passenger van rental?
With a passenger van rental, you can travel in spacious style, whether you’re a group of 4, 6, 8, or more. Make FOMO a thing of the past, keep the whole crew together, and bring your costs down by renting a single vehicle for everyone on your trip.
How much do passenger vans cost to rent?
If you’re after a large luxury van rental, those luxuries are likely to show up in the price tag. But there are plenty of budget options, too. Right now, you can rent a passenger van from just $52 per day. Prices and availability are subject to change. Additional terms may apply.
Can I find a cheap passenger van rental?
Size and style come into play when you’re hunting for a cheap passenger van rental, and there are plenty more factors at play, too. Airport locations are often pricier, and costs can increase with demand—so you’re in luck if your travel dates are flexible. To find the cheapest vans on offer, sort your search results by price or filter by budget.
What’s the difference between a full-size van and a minivan?
The difference between a van and a minivan is all about size. You can carry the whole gang in a minivan…as long as there’s no more than 8 of you. If you’re taking a trip with a few more troops, a passenger van can usually cope with up to 15 travelers.
Should I book a 12 passenger van rental or a 15 passenger van rental?
Once again, it all comes down to the size of your crew—and how much space you all need to ride in comfort. A few extra seats always come in handy for bags, souvenirs, or anything you pick up along the way. That said, keep in mind that a 12-passenger van is likely to be more fuel efficient and easier to maneuver.
Why should I choose a luxury van rental?
A luxury van rental brings the space, the comfort, the swagger. Think extra leg and headroom along with USB connectivity, tinted windows, precision climate control, and style aplenty.
Can I rent a full size van with free cancellation?
Plans change—you can almost count on it. For peace of mind if and when they do, you can book with free cancellation by filtering your search results by cancellation policy. That way you can all relax should your group size, travel dates, or anything else veer off course.

Driving rules in the U.S.
Driving in the USA is a unique and exciting experience and a fantastic way to explore the country, but it’s important to familiarize yourself with some key aspects before you set off on your journey. Traffic laws and regulations may vary slightly from state to state but there are common rules that apply throughout the country:
- You must have a valid driver’s license if you plan to drive anywhere in the USA.
- At four-way intersections with stop signs, the rule is first come, first served. If the order is unclear, the driver to the right generally has the right of way.
- Right turns on red lights are allowed unless otherwise stated in a “No right on red’ sign.
- School buses must not be passed when stopping to let off students. Pay attention to the flashing lights and stop sign to avoid heavy fines.
- Parking is not allowed in any red zones, and blue parking is only Accessible Parking which requires a special parking pass. White parking zones are for loading and unloading and may be used to pick up or drop off passengers. Keep an eye out for any colors painted on curbs, as well as no parking signs including specific day street sweeping, when looking for parking.
Camping in the U.S.
Camping in the USA offers a vast array of scenic locations, from National Parks and forests to coastal campgrounds or remote wilderness areas, providing nature enthusiasts with endless opportunities to immerse themselves in the great outdoors.
- State Campgrounds : They tend to be a little cheaper, are usually spacious, and often include a picnic table and private fireplace. The sanitary facilities vary and are not always included, but often have potable water and toilets.
- Private Campgrounds : Usually have water and electrical hookups, as well as internet access, but are more expensive than state campgrounds.
- Wild or Dispersed Camping : Allows you to save a lot of money and spend the night in very special places in the middle of nature, but have little to no amenities. Many National Forests and BLM land allow dispersed camping with Leave No Trace practices and other region-specific guidelines. In some states, dispersed camping is illegal without a camping permit so it’s best to check your travel destination in advance.
Insider tip: The campgrounds in National and State Parks are beautiful and usually very popular, especially during high season, so you might need to book your campground months in advance.
Popular events & festivals in the U.S.
Immerse yourself in American culture by attending special events during your camper van or Class C RV adventure. Here’s an annual overview of some popular events and celebrations:
- Sundance Film Festival (January) : The largest independent film festival in the United States is held in Park City, Utah.
- Mardi Gras (February) : Mardi Gras is a lively carnival held in New Orleans, Louisiana, which attracts over a million visitors each year.
- Coachella (April) : The famous Indio music festival in California’s Coachella Valley draws music fans from around the world each year.
- Independence Day (July) : On the 4th of July, America celebrates this holiday with parades and large-scale fireworks. Special festivities and barbeques are held in many places.
- Burning Man (August) : For this festival, a temporary town is built each year in the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada. The festival is known worldwide for its original costumes, its culture of giving, and its unique art.

15 Best Campervan Rental Companies for Your US Road Trip
You don’t have to own a campervan to live your best #vanlife. Here are some of the best campervan rental companies for your next road trip.
#Vanlife has exploded across the country, with more people than ever hitting the road in converted Mercedes Sprinter Vans, Ford Transits, or old-school Volkswagon Vanagons.
Keen to jump on the #vanlife and travel the off-beaten path? I’ve compiled a list of the best camper van rental companies to help you get started on your Great American road trip.
Each of these camper van rental companies does things a little differently, and some will suit your needs better than others. So it’s key that you understand your options. With each company, I’ve included a summary of what makes them unique, as well as a list of pros and cons so you can compare them easily.
Whether you’re checking off multiple cities, or visiting National Parks, camper van rentals give you the flexibility to set out on a road trip without the hassle of hotel bookings, crashing at a motel, or setting up a tent every night.
Camper van rental companies also tend to be more cost-effective than hotel rooms, depending on where you’re going and which company you choose.
In many ways, it’s a win-win. You get the ability to be spontaneous and travel to less-known areas like you’re camping, but you also have many of the comforts and conveniences of a hotel.
Most of these camper van rental companies offer many different types of RVs in addition to campervans. These include Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, and more.
To get more comfortable with the jargon and the rental process, check out my post on how to rent an RV. It breaks down the difference between all these travel van accommodations and should give you a good start before you set out on your road trip.
And with that said, these are my top picks for the best camper van rental companies out there today.
What to Know Before Renting a Campervan
Before we dive into the list of the best camper van rental companies, you should know there are two different types of companies that offer significantly different services and rental experiences.
The first is when camper van rental companies use a peer-to-peer model where you can rent camper vans from a private owner (much like Airbnb). Some of these platforms also allow you to be a renter and list your RV on their site (should you have one hiding in the garage).
On peer-to-peer rental sites, there will be a wide range of camper van rentals to choose from, and not all will be high quality. Fortunately, review systems on peer-to-peer sites can help you make your choice with confidence.
The second type is a company fleet where companies buy and convert cars into RVs or construct their own RVs, and you can rent directly from the company. These camper van rental companies are a bit more reliable and professional than the previous model, but it can also be pricier.
With company fleet rentals, you’ll also be more limited when it comes to selection. Most fleet camper van rental companies just have a few models to choose from.

Outdoorsy : Best Peer-to-Peer Rental Marketplace
Outdoorsy is the Airbnb of campervan rentals . It’s one of the largest camper van rental companies in the country. It provides an online platform where owners connect with RV and van owners. Not only is it the most trusted marketplace for camper van rentals around, but it’s also incredibly user-friendly.
The platform is a peer-to-peer marketplace, meaning you rent from private RV and van owners instead of a company-owned fleet. You’ll find an extensive range of RVs. From luxurious Class A motorhomes to compact campervans, with Class B, Class C, tent campers, and everything in between.
The site is easy to navigate. Just type in rental locations, and Outdoorsy displays all the available RV rentals. You can also filter your search to display campervan-only results or any other RV type you wish to browse.
They also offer comprehensive insurance as well as a review feature that makes choosing a breeze.
Have a camper van or RV sleeping in your garage? You can list it on Outdoorsy and earn some extra cash.
Reckon it’s a good deal? Read my detailed Outdoorsy review for more info or use this Outdoorsy promo code and get $40 off your first booking.
- Pros & Cons
- The company is one of the most trusted online camper van rental companies. SimilarWeb ranked Outdoorsy on the Digital 100 (an annual ranking of the fastest-growing companies) as the ninth place in the Travel Experiences category.
- Outdoorsy operates campervan rentals in 14 countries, including the USA. So if you happen to be in Canada, Australia, the UK, France, or Italy, you can still use Outdoorsy’s services.
- RV owners wanting to rent their vehicles on Outdoorsy can join the site for free, and there are no membership fees either.
- With a massive selection in most areas, it's easy to find a camper van that fits your needs and budget.
- Hosts choose their own rules, and many offer unlimited miles.
- You aren't limited to specific rental locations like fleet-owned van rentals. You can find a van pretty much anywhere in the country.
- The site features detailed, personal reviews. You can find customer reviews on their campervan rentals and also reviews on their experience with the RV owners.
- Outdoorsy has an impressive insurance protection package that comes with complimentary 24/7 roadside assistance. Coverage begins as soon as you have the keys and ends when you return them.
- Outdoorsy is one of the most trusted RV rental companies in the world. However, due to the company’s peer-to-peer model, it can still be a victim to fraudsters preying on RV owners or rentees. Always read reviews and rent from owners who have good feedback.
- Not all the campervan rentals will be in immaculate condition. Thus, it’s crucial that you also check the reviews and ratings for indications of the quality before booking a camper van.
RVezy : Best Newcomer for Peer-to-Peer Rentals
If Outdoorsy is the Airbnb of RVs, RVezy is its younger cousin who just recently entered the market. But RVezy is already giving Outdoorsy direct competition. Both camper van rental companies offer a wide range of vans and RVs to choose from.
The company first launched in Canada back in 2017, where it quickly became the King of campervan rentals. It recently crossed the border to enter the US market, bringing along its best selection of RVs and first-class customer support services.
Just like Outdoorsy, RVezy is an online van rental platform that uses a peer-to-peer model to link RV owners with rentees. Renting a camper van from RVezy is as easy as typing your destination into their site and then choosing one from a list of impressive and verified RVs.
While the company has a huge RV selection and is well-known in Canada, it’s still gaining momentum in the US. Compared to Outdoorsy, RVezy in the US has a smaller selection of camper vans and rental locations. But this deficit is likely temporary since the company is determined to establish a strong US market.
For a detailed breakdown and comparison of these two companies, you can check out my RVezy review or this post comparing Outdoorsy vs. RVezy .
- RVezy provides outdoor fanatics in Canada and the US an affordable way to find campervan rentals, offering lower service costs than Outdoorsy.
- Every RVezy rental is pre-screened for verification and is fully insured, so you can start your road trip with peace of mind.
- The company has received tons of positive customer reviews and provides excellent customer service. As opposed to just pointing you to their site’s help center , their staff is friendly, quick to respond, and offers meaningful suggestions and solutions.
- It’s completely free to list your camper van on RVezy if you’re wanting to make some extra income.
- RVezy in the US has a limited selection of campervan rentals since the company only arrived here recently, in 2020.
- RVezy also lacks reviews in the US since the company is still establishing a footing here and is yet to gain popularity on this side of the border.
- The company doesn’t offer free roadside assistance, and this essential add-on may prove to be pricey for some.
Escape Campervans : Best Fleet of Converted Vans
Escape Campervans is one of the largest van rental companies in the USA, offering their own converted vans to rent. It was founded by three surfers in 2003 in New Zealand and then they expanded to the United States in 2009.
Now they operate rental locations in more than thirteen cities, with Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, and Denver on the list. If you’re in Canada, no worries. The company’s campervan rentals are also available in Vancouver and Calgary.
While most rental companies are focused in the West, Escape Campervans is one of the few that is available on the East Coast with their locations in New York and Orlando. Because they have so many rental locations, it’s pretty easy to find a place to start your road trip.
The highlight of Escape Campervans is that they are hand-painted by local artists. Think, gram-worthy pictures and aesthetically pleasing postcards…if you don’t mind all the attention you’ll be attracting.
Their vans can sleep two to five people. One of their most popular models is the Maverick—spacious on the inside but still small enough to drive through crowded parking lots.
Rental rates begin at $33 per day but pick up during peak season. These rates are also dependent on the RV model, pick-up or drop-off location, and the duration of your trip. The longer you rent an RV, the lower the cost.
The mileage restriction for Escape Campervans is 100 miles per day, and exceeding this limit means you have to pay an additional fee at the rate that corresponds to your vehicle’s model. If you have driven less than the mileage limit, you’ll receive a refund for the unused miles. This means they are better for slower-paced traveling than a long haul road trip.
Want to go farther off the beaten path? Escape Campervans also offers a Jeep Camper option if you want to rent something with off-road capability.
- The company offers 24-hour roadside assistance. This is a big advantage over other camper van rental companies and gives great peace of mind for your trip.
- The hand-painted designs make you stand out on the road and act as unique backdrops for pictures.
- The company has rental locations in many of the USA’s biggest cities and two Canadian cities. If you want to fly to a destination and rent a van from there, they are also in some great places to start a road trip, like Salt Lake City and Denver.
- Their vast collection of rentals are built and customized using tried-and-true methods and modern designs. This greatly lowers the risk of flaws and failure, making Escape Campervans another trustworthy company on this list.
- All the campervans include a dual battery system with solar panel, refrigerator, stove, and sink.
- While you can choose customizable options, like bedding, camping equipment, and kitchen kits, these come at an additional charge.
- The Maverick, Big Sur, and Santa Cruz models don’t have bathrooms so renters of these vehicles have no choice but to use public restrooms or campground facilities. If sharing a bathroom isn’t your vibe, you may want to skip this option.
RVshare : The Original Campervan Rental Company
Like Outdoorsy, RVShare is a peer-to-peer marketplace that has received thousands of five-star reviews from satisfied customers.
RVShare’s site is easy to navigate and search for a camper van rental near you. It’s as simple as entering your location and trip dates to view available camper vans. You can filter the results based on the type of camper van, price, delivery, and pet-friendly options.
For more information on the differences between the two titans of peer-to-peer campervan rentals, you can read my post on Outdoorsy vs RVShare .
It’s interesting to know that RVShare was actually the first to enter the RV rental marketplace with a peer-to-peer model in 2012.
The company is mostly focused on operating in the U.S., with more than 100,000 RVs across the country. From high-end Class A motorhomes to Class B campervans, fifth wheels, and travel trailers, you can find a wide selection on RVShare’s site.
- A peer-to-peer marketplace that allows RVShare to boast a huge collection of different camper van rental types, unique options, and competitive prices.
- Every rental comes with 24/7 emergency roadside assistance and they also offer insurance protection.
- A fantastic perk for frequent travelers is that return customers get a 5% cashback on future trips.
- There are no membership fees, and it’s free for RV owners to join RVShare and make money with their own campervan rentals.
- You aren't limited to set rental locations and can find van rentals pretty much anywhere in the country.
- Personally-owned vehicles on RVShare’s marketplace means they might not always uphold the quality that the company promises. It’s best to check the rentee’s reviews before deciding which campervan you would like to rent for your trip.
- Some may find it suspicious that RVShare doesn’t disclose which insurance company they’ve partnered with. However, the company does hold an A+ rating by the BBB (Better Business Bureau). It's up to you to decide if RVShare is really trustworthy or not.
- Compared to Outdoorsy, RVShare doesn’t emphasize owners’ profiles much. So, finding owners’ profiles for reviews and contact info is sometimes tricky.
Travellers Autobarn : Best Van Rentals for Road Trips
If you want to head out on an epic road trip across the Southwest or West Coast, Travellers Autobarn has you covered with a fleet of surprisingly affordable vans for rent. With locations in Las Vegas, Las Angeles, and San Francisco, it’s easy to fly in, pick one up, and head out on the road.
One thing that sets Travellers Autobarn apart is that they offer minivan rentals in addition to larger converted campervans. These minivans still fit a mattress in the back and can come with a cooler and a simple gas cooktop. They definitely aren’t as nice as full size vans, but their cheaper, easier to drive, and burn a lot less gas. If you’re okay with having fewer creature comforts, these minivan rentals are a great way to travel without spending a fortune.
The best part? Every van rental from Travellers Autobarn comes with unlimited daily miles. That’s right, there’s no extra charge for driving farther, so you don’t have to worry about racking up miles to see everything you want to see. If you’re wanting to visit multiple national parks or cruise along the coast, that’s a huge bonus and can save you a lot of money.
- Affordable daily rates, especially for their smaller vehicles, so you can plan a trip that you can actually afford.
- Unlimited driving miles means you can feel free to go where the road takes you. No stress about extra charges.
- Minivan rentals are available for much less than converted camper vans
- They have a seven-night minimum for some locations and seasons.
- The vans are smaller and have fewer amenities than luxury rentals.
- None of their vans have any sort of bathroom or toilet, so you'll be limited to using public campground restrooms.
Cruise America : Best RV Rental Company
Established in 1972 by Robert Smalley Sr., Cruise America is one of the biggest RV rental companies today. Unlike Outdoorsy and RVezy, Cruise America is a corporate rental company with one of the largest fleets in North America. They have locations everywhere from San Francisco to Salt Lake City to Miami.
Chances are, you’ve probably seen one of their rentals on the road or at National Parks. With unique, elaborate designs on the exterior (including the quintessential photo of a dog in the door’s window), it’s impossible to forget a Cruise America RV. With one of their rentals, you can easily cruise America in style.
Their fleet comprises four models that can sleep anywhere from two to seven travelers:
- Large RV: fit for a family of up to seven people.
- Standard RV: perfect for up to five people.
- Compact RV: sleeps up to three people.
- Truck Camper: can sleep a maximum of two people—ideal for a couple or someone who’s still a rookie in the RV game.
Along with renting out RVs, Cruise America also sells pre-owned RVs at a reduced cost.
- Due to the company possessing a large fleet, they have a wide range of availability for their RVs.
- Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, their vans are available in over 132 rental locations in the US and Canada. No matter where your road trips take you, you'll be able to find a location to rent an RV, from the West Coast to the East Coast.
- Since Cruise America is one of the leading RV rental companies, it can afford to offer a better price than most of its competitors. The company also has promotions at certain times of the year as well as special offers if you book early.
- Cruise America offers free insurance, which is a great perk compared to most camper van rental companies.
- They offer one-way rentals, so you can pick a campervan up in San Francisco and drop it off in Las Vegas, or any of their other rental locations!
- Their cancellation policy covers a full refund if you cancel your two-way booking at least a week before the start of your trip.
- Cruise America only has four RV models on offer.
- With their massive inventory, customer service isn’t always top-notch and can fall short during peak times.
- Even their compact RV is larger than most true converted camper vans.
- Often, their rental prices don’t include additional costs. For instance, they reserve the right to charge you extra fees for cleaning, generator use, and if you don't empty the tanks before returning. If you're on a strict budget, you may want to look for camper van rental companies that offer more straightforward pricing.
Cabana : Luxury Campervan Rentals
Cabana is a franchise van rental company that currently offers campervan rentals in Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin.
Unlike peer-to-peer camper van rental companies like Outdoorsy, all their vans are part of their franchise-owned fleets, and they are all professionally built specifically for Cabana. This has both advantages and disadvantages.
Cabana positions itself as a “modern, mobile hospitality company. Renting a Cabana really is like getting a hotel room on wheels, and you get a lot more convenience than most van rentals. Cabana vans come fully loaded with clean linens, toiletries, camp chairs, and a coffee machine. With so much ready for you, it’s easy to hit the road in comfort.
Cabana also has their own app for scheduling rentals, and their vans are fitted with electronic locks for contactless pickup. It is super easy to pick up a van and get on the road. The app also has manuals and helpful instructions that show you how to operate everything in the van.
One great thing about Cabana’s system is that you know what you are getting, and their vans are beautiful. You can check out their van layouts and features , and you know that every van will have the same amenities.
Of course, that means you don’t get much to choose from. They technically have three different models available, but they aren’t all available at the different rental locations, and there aren’t huge differences between them anyway. As long as you’re happy with their setup.
Cabana is also quite a bit more expensive than most other camper van rentals out there. You get great amenities, quality, and service, but if you’re looking for the cheapest option, you’ll probably want to look elsewhere.
In my mind, Cabana is fantastic for people looking to try van travel for the first time. Their contactless pickup is super easy, and their vans are well stocked to make it as easy as possible to get out traveling, whether you’re visiting famous cities or checking off National Parks.
If you fall in love with vanlife, Cabana also offers their vans for sale !
- Every van has the same great amenities, meaning you don’t have to worry about whether a specific vehicle will fit your needs.
- All Cabana vans have a toilet, a hot shower, and a kitchen with a two-burner stove. It’s pretty easy to be self-contained on road trips.
- Vans are stocked with linens, toiletries, camp chairs, and camping gear to make it as easy as possible for you to get on the road.
- Their vans are really well-designed and offer a lot of great functionality for traveling.
- Cabana has built a ton of storage into their vans. With the massive storage room under the bed, it’ll be easy to find space for everything you bring on your trip.
- They currently have rental locations in Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin, and that list is likely to grow as they expand with new franchises.
- Not much selection for different van options. Basically, you get what you get.
- It’s going to be more expensive than many other camper van rental companies.
- As with many vans, the grey and black water tanks are pretty small and will fill up quickly on longer trips.
- Their rental locations are mostly along the west coast (and one in Texas), so you're out of luck anywhere else.
Native Campervans : Best Camper Rentals for Groups
Denver-based company, Native Campervans , is a local company that offers fully-equipped, customized camper vans for long and short-term journeys. They have rental locations in Denver, Salt Lake City, or Las Vegas for a West American road trip.
Choosing a van from Native Campermans is so simple . They have three types of vans: the “Smalls,” the “Biggie,” and the “Squad.”
The “Smalls” is a remodeled Dodge Grand Caravan, and the “Biggie” is a Ram ProMaster HighRoof. Both these vans sleep two, but Biggie is, obviously, more spacious and can seat up to three people.
If you’re a group of four, go for the “Squad.” With a bed and waterproof rooftop tent, all four of your squad members can comfortably sleep in/on this van.
Besides a convertible bed, rentals also include bedding, camping chairs, a foldaway table, and a small kitchen with a gas stove, sink, and cooking essentials. Basically, all the necessary amenities you would need on a campervan trip.
Rates depend on the season and trip duration but range between $80-140 per day in the off-season and $110-240 per day during peak season. Rentals have a mileage limit of 100 miles per night, and any excess mileage is charged at a rate of $0.25 per mile.
- Each camper van rental includes basic insurance coverage.
- You can add additional drivers for no extra fee.
- Their spacious interiors enable a comfortable sitting and sleeping situation.
- Some models offer a rooftop tent for more sleeping room.
- Cruise through the entire US and Canada without worrying about out-of-state penalties.
- Rental locations are in Denver, Salt Lake City, and Las Vegas, but the company also offers one-way rentals if you don’t want to travel the same road twice.
- If you care about the planet (and you really should), it’s nice to know that Native Campermans is committed to reducing their impact. They’re making an effort to offset their carbon footprint and have already reduced it by 550 metric tons.
- There is a three-night minimum for rentals.
- Each rental requires a $60 preparation fee.
- With only three types of camper vans, customers’ selection is limited.
Peace Vans : Best Vintage Campervan Rentals
If you love those old-school VWs, Peace Vans might just be your favorite option from this list.
Based in Seattle, WA, they offer their retro camper van rentals across the Pacific Northwest. They also specialize in the repair and maintenance of VW campers. They’re actually the largest VW campervan shop in North America.
Once, a couple drove from Alabama all the way to the company’s shop in Seattle so their precious VW could get a winter makeover . That’s some real dedication, folks!
The company caters to the hip and cool. They spice up their travel vans with cookware, wine glasses, freshly-ground coffee, and more thoughtful and surprising additions. It’s like boutique #vanlife.
Peace Vans has a way of charming its customers. They also provide itineraries or help you plan yours. Harley Sitner, the owner, says he has worked with families and their photos from the ‘70s to recreate childhood trips. Heartwarming, right?
Just in case you’re not a fan of the iconic VW camper vans, or the groovy Vanagon vibe doesn’t appeal to you, the company also rents out stylish Mercedes campers.
- Revamped VW camper van rentals for insta-worthy pictures.
- Rentals are more personalized and many times come with surprise additions.
- Along with camping van rentals, they offer gift cards, detailed itineraries, and access to secret camping spots.
- Most vans come fitted with a refrigerator and a complete set of cooking and eating utensils for four people.
- You can enjoy the views while belting the lyrics to your favorite songs, thanks to the premium sound system.
- The company also provides fashionable Mercedes Metris pop-up campers to rent.
- Since the vehicles are old and require a lot of care, the rental pool is constantly changing. For the same reason, the vans you see on site and the vans available at the time of booking may differ.
- During the high season, Peace Vans has a six-night minimum, and during the shoulder season, a four-night minimum.
- Complete linen packages with pillows, sheets, sleeping blankets, and towels are available but for an extra cost.
- The company has only one depot in Seattle, Washington.
- VW’s Vanagons do not have AC, keeping in line with the “vintage” vibe.
- The Weekender model doesn’t have a kitchen.
GoCamp : Best Storyteller Overland Rentals
There are a lot of fleet rental companies out there, but there are still a lot of advantages to peer-to-peer rental marketplaces. GoCamp is another platform where van owners can rent out their vehicles for you to use and enjoy. They are often more affordable, you get way more options, and you can find rentals all over the country.
One difference between GoCamp and other rental platforms like Outdoorsy is that there are only campervans here, and they have a higher standard overall for the vans that are listed. There’s still a huge range to choose from, though. You can get an uber-luxurious sprinter van with full kitchens and bathrooms, or a monster 4×4 lifted adventure machine .
- A huge range of campervans is available at locations across the country.
- Their curated list of individual-owned vans includes high-end, luxury models that are much better quality than you find from most peer-to-peer rentals.
- Off-road capable 4x4 models available in many locations, if you want to get off the beaten path.
- GoCamp vans are more expensive than other peer-to-peer rentals like Outdoorsy.
- Since it isn't a rental fleet, there may be maintenance issues with some of the vans.
- Watch out for cleaning fees if you return a van dirty.
Vintage Surfari Wagons : Campervan Rental in California
Vintage Surfari Wagons is similar to Peace Vans in that they also offer a range of classic Volkswagen camper vans for rent.
The company is, however, closer to Southern California. Its location makes it a better option for Californians seeking an old-school VW camper van rental.
Time travel back to the ‘70s era with their wide range of Vanagons, Eurovans, and buses for rent. Their rates are pretty reasonable and sit somewhere near the middle of the range for camper van rental prices.
- The company is located in Los Angeles, which is an amazing road trip start point.
- Group trips are available to book for places like California’s Death Valley.
- The ‘70s and ‘80s-styled VW camper van rental options make for stunning pictures and embody the Cali vibe.
- All the funky vans include a stove, refrigerator, dining table, sink, sleeping bunks, and other amenities necessary for camping.
- The company only offers vintage rental vans. Slow cruising and a retro feel may not be your cup of tea.
- During mid-summer, rates can get pretty high with a three-day minimum requirement for renting.
Voyager Campervans
Voyager Campervans are nicely spread out across the United States, with rental locations in Los Angeles, Portland, Nashville, Phoenix, Austin, and Minneapolis. One of my favorite things about this company is that you can plan a one-way trip and drop off your van at any location! most camper van rental companies only let you pick up and drop off at the same location, so this is great for long-haul trips.
Voyager Camper Vans come with a large bed, off-grid power, a stove with cooking fuel, linens, cookware, and a water source. If you’re an eco-friendly kind of person, you’ll appreciate that these vans have extra sustainable touches, like solar-powered coolers.
It’s also super convenient to travel with Voyager Campervans: you can use self-check-in to save yourself some time, and you’ll get up to 175 miles per day included in your daily rate. You’re all set to go without worrying about too much about mileage.
- Voyager Campervans are fitted with everything you need to live on the road and cook up a storm. They are fitted with impressive kitchens, and additional amenities are available, like linens, towels, and camping gear.
- You can take advantage of their one-way service instead of doing a round trip.
- They’re eco-friendly, with solar-powered coolers and electric outlets with LED lighting that works even when the van is off.
- Rentals can range anywhere from about $99 to $150 per day, depending on the season. Prices increase during the peak season, but you’ll get great discounts when you book longer trips. For example, a peak season rental from Austin is about $149/night for a three-day rental, while it’ll only cost you $111/night if you rent for 10+ days.
- 175 miles per day is covered in your daily rate, which is much higher compared to most other companies.
- You can use Voyager Campervan’s self check-in option when you pick up your rig so you can save time (and deal with fewer people, if that’s your thing).
- Groups of three or more adults may find these vans to be too confined and compact.
- There’s not a ton of variety in the design of these camper vans—they’re all pretty standard.
- You’re allowed to bring your dog, but it’ll cost you an extra $30 for cleaning fees.
- You have to make a minimal booking of three nights.
Moterra Campervans
Ok, enough about old-school, vintage campervans that belong in grandma’s yard. It’s not always “old is gold.” Sometimes, it’s about the fine luxuries and comfort.
Moterra Campervans is a locally-owned campervan rental company based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and they have rental locations all over the West, from Salt Lake City to San Francisco to Las Vegas. They offer three types of campervans, all of which are 4WD Diesel Sprinters. These include pop-tops and high-roof Sprinters.
The all-inclusive luxury Sprinter vehicles come fully equipped with everything you could possibly need for your trip as a standard. Moterra’s vehicles also feature a full kitchen with a stove, sink, and fridge, a thermostat heater, a solar electric system, and a porta-potty toilet.
To accommodate up to four people, the pop-top vans have two double beds. The high-roof vans sleep two or a family of three with a small child, making them ideal for couples. High-roof vans also come with a full bathroom (a hot water shower and toilet).
These decked-out come at a cost, though. Moterra campervan rentals are some of the most expensive out there. It’s worth it if you want to cruise in luxury, but there are less expensive options if you don’t need the absolute best van on the market.
In addition to the basic amenities, Moterra provides entirely customized itineraries, so you don’t have to spend hours planning your own.
- Moterra offers all-inclusive luxury campervan rentals with its Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles.
- The Sprinters are of premium quality—built by Sportsmobile and a maximum of three years old.
- Personalized itineraries feature a plan for each day of your trip, along with booked campgrounds, activities, and a friendly Trip Expert.
- Plenty of rental locations, so it's easy to find luxury campervan rentals near you.
- The list of extras that can be added for an additional charge is quite extensive. From hammocks and bike racks to pre-bought groceries, tents, personal vehicle storage, entertainment packs for kids, and more.
- There’s a five-night minimum during the peak season. The company may be willing to adjust this if you phone or email them. However, any camper van rental for less than five nights come with a nightly rate increase.
- Since there are set pick-up and return times, you have to plan your departure and return around these times.
- Unfortunately for youngsters, you have to be 25 or older to rent a Moterra camper van.
With Roamerica , you can rent camper vans from Portland and travel anywhere in the United States and Canada with your family.
The company offers Ford Econolines and Ford Transits with both 2WD and 4WD. Their vans come fully equipped with everything you could need for a campervan trip.
Each vehicle comfortably accommodates four individuals or a family of five with small children. Along with standing room inside, vehicles have two beds, a full kitchen, cooking essentials, and camping gear. They also include a set of Gazetteer Maps for Oregon, Washington, and California and a deck of cards for an easy and entertaining road trip.
Like some of the other company-owned fleet camper van rentals, Roamerica camper vans are pricy compared to peer-to-peer rentals. It’s up to you to decide if the quality, convenience, and peace of mind is worth paying a bit more for.
- Free roadside assistance so you can travel in your van rental stress-free.
- Adventure sports enthusiasts can also rent paddleboards and bicycles.
- Vehicles are car seat friendly, providing a safe space for your precious cargo.
- Got a furry friend? Bring them too—Roamerica’s vehicles are also dog friendly.
- When the camper vans are parked, a “pop-up” rooftop raises to give you more standing space inside.
- Roamerica doesn't have a wide range of rental locations like some other van rentals.
- Roamerica is closely located to the Portland International Airport and offers free airport pick-up, so you can start cruising the Pacific Northwest as soon as you touch ground.
- The fuel tank must be full when returning the campervan rental or it will be charged against your security deposit at a rate of $5 per gallon.
- Pick-up and returns are by appointment only (except major holidays), so you have to plan your trip around your appointment’s timings. The specific pick-up and drop-off times also have to be booked several days in advance, usually between 10 am and 3 pm, from Monday to Friday.
- While dogs are allowed, they require approval prior to booking and must travel in a soft crate or something similar. The company has a strict rule about keeping dogs off seats at all times.
Campervan North America Rental
Focused more on convenience and efficiency than luxury or aesthetics, Campervan North America offers five different campervan models. These include the likes of a converted Nissan NV, Dodge Promaster, a Mercedes Freightliner, and more.
You can easily rent a van with this campervan rental company based in Bozeman with a rental location in Denver, Las Vegas, and Seattle. Their vans sleep from two to five people depending on the model. Some models have kitchen equipment like a stove, sink, and fridge, while others don’t. Only the “Two4theRoad” and “Clanhauler” include a toilet with a shower.
While many owned-fleet camper van rental companies only offer a few different models that don’t have much differentiating them, it’s nice that Campervan North America has a wide range to choose from. You’re sure to find a van that fits the needs of your trip.
Whether you’re exploring the Pacific Northwest or the Rocky Mountains, Campervan North America is a great place to rent a van for your trip.
Campervan North America is also less expensive than other fleet camper van rental companies.
- The company focuses on small campervan rental models, so prices aren’t too high.
- Discounts apply to all rentals booked for more than 15 nights.
- Campervan North America is an environmentally responsible campervan rental.
- Most of their vehicles are new and converted into campervans, so they are fuel-efficient, saving money on your trip.
- Some of their rentals are pet-friendly so your furry friend doesn’t get left behind.
- They have a four-night minimum rental, but this increases to a seven-night minimum during the high season (May to September).
- Campervan rental pick-up and drop-off timings are fixed, with the pick-up time being 2:30 pm and the drop-off time being 10:30 am.
- Rentals booked for less than seven nights during peak season are still charged at the rate of seven nights.

I went on my first long-distance van trip. These were the 6 best and 7 worst parts of the 10-day adventure.
Posted: April 22, 2023 | Last updated: June 21, 2023
- I tried out van life for the first time during a 10-day road trip in a Mercedes Sprinter van.
- Traveling by van allowed my friend and I to save money on hotels and make stops along the route.
- However, the vehicle felt cluttered, and being in such close quarters tested our relationship.
My friend and I spent 10 days traveling along the Oregon Coast in a Mercedes Sprinter van.
As an avid solo traveler, I'm always open to having new experiences.
When a friend asked me to take their parents' 2022 Mercedes-Benz Beast MODE 4x4 Sprinter van on its maiden voyage from San Francisco to Portland and back down the Oregon Coast, I was ecstatic and accepted the offer.
We drove over 10 hours from San Francisco to Portland in a little more than a day, making pit stops at Mount Shasta and Crater Lake National Park. We spent most of our time in Portland and eventually drove down the Oregon Coast, visiting Humboldt County in California before completing our loop.
Here were the major highs and lows of my first van trip, and why I'll try out this type of travel alone next time.
The van belonged to my friend's parents, so we didn't have to shell out money on a rental.
I'm grateful that my travel partner's parents allowed us to borrow their Sprinter van.
The Mercedes-Benz Beast MODE 4x4 retails at about $200,000 , and renting it would've cost at least $200 per night . Having free access to this vehicle made the trip possible.
We were also lucky to be able to park at loved ones' homes along the route, which helped cut down on nightly fees at RV parks and other campsites.
I was able to work remotely and even attended a professional event on the road.
Though I was worried about my ability to work on the road, I had a productive workflow.
While my travel partner drove, I used a hot spot to work on writing assignments. It was convenient, and I wouldn't have been able to get as much done if I was traveling alone and had to drive the entire time.
When we were planning our trip, my travel partner suggested that I do in-person tarot readings along the way. I connected with a few shop owners to inquire about hosting pop-up events and accepted an opportunity to be a tarot reader at a psychic fair in Vancouver, Washington.
We chose Portland as our destination so I could take the job, which brought me valuable networking opportunities and profits. It made me feel secure after taking off work to go on the trip and showed me that I could find business on the road.
Living out of the van granted us the freedom to stop in various places.
Our trip took us to Mount Shasta, Crater Lake National Park, Vancouver, Portland, Mount Hood, the Oregon Coast, and various cities in Humboldt County.
We stayed in RV parks and on loved ones' properties, but the van itself was our home base. On some mornings, we woke up in the city, and on others, we started the day on the beach or in the forest.
The experience was very in line with my travel style.
The food we made in the van was delicious, and cooking saved us a lot of money.
Bringing groceries and cooking in the van helped us save money on food . The meals I enjoyed most were all homemade, and we prepared them using a portable battery and a hot plate.
We also went out to eat at various restaurants along our route. One of my favorite dishes was a crab mac and cheese that I indulged in while admiring the harbor in Newport, Oregon.
Traveling with a dog wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be.
My friend's dog had never traveled in a van for an extended period of time before, so we weren't sure how she'd behave.
Our canine companion certainly didn't enjoy being in the van, but she was very quiet while we were on the road.
Whenever we stopped, she was eager to get out and play but refused to get back in the vehicle unless we carried her inside. We made sure to stop at a few dog parks, which gave us a little break from driving, too.
We had pleasant experiences at the RV parks where we stayed.
Even though we called the RV parks to make reservations at the last minute, we found it easy to book spaces.
We also landed on some exceptional spots, such as Seal Rocks RV Cove , which is within walking distance of a beach.
We spent about $40 per night at each RV site, which was affordable considering they also gave us access to toilets, showers, and electric and water hookups.
When it comes to the trip's downsides, I didn't love having to make so many compromises.
My friend and I needed to work out a lot of logistics before we could make this trip happen.
For example, the proposed travel dates were during one of my busy work periods. Going meant I'd miss out on a lot of opportunities to do in-person tarot readings.
However, I agreed to take the trip as long as we tracked our spending and had access to Wi-Fi so I could work remotely.
I also made a compromise with my travel partner and declined a couple of work opportunities so we could see Crater Lake and go to Sonoma, as they wanted to fit in both stops. Unfortunately, neither visit ended up panning out.
The van had some complications, and we couldn't use the shower or sink.
A few days before our trip, the van had an electrical issue, and we weren't sure if we'd be able to take it out at all. Thankfully, we worked around it and moved forward as planned.
But before hitting the road, my travel partner asked me to read the user guide to understand the van's intricate systems . She said we needed to be cautious when using the outlets, microwave, and hot plate to ensure we didn't accidentally short-circuit the vehicle.
It didn't end up being a problem. We brought a portable battery to power the kitchen appliances and charge our phones and laptops.
We also thought we'd need to park in places with electric and water hookups to recharge the van and refill the water tanks.
As it turns out, the van charged while we drove. We also didn't worry about a water hookup, as the van's sink and built-in shower needed maintenance and weren't usable during our trip.
Instead, we relied on the facilities at campsites and friends' homes.
Keeping the van clean was a challenge, and I spent a lot of time organizing our things.
The morning of our departure was hectic, and we strewed our bags in the back of the van. I spent a lot of the first day (and the next nine) putting things away, securing drawers and cabinets, and keeping our belongings organized .
The small space accumulated clutter quickly , so it constantly had to be maintained. I didn't mind cleaning the van, but I would've preferred to only pick up after myself, which is one of the reasons I typically travel alone.
My clothing wasn't weather-appropriate, but I made do with what I had.
This adventure was a vastly different experience than my last road trip , during which I packed my car with outfits and gear for every season.
On this journey, I didn't have space in my luggage for bulky items, like a heavy coat or hiking boots, even though they would've been useful during our time in the mountains .
My travel partner offered to let me borrow some of her things but, at the end of the trip, I was proud to have only used my own clothing.
It also helped that I snagged a pair of hiking shoes from a box of free items I found in Portland.
My friend and I never figured out the sleeping arrangements.
Throughout the trip, I tried every sleeping arrangement possible.
On the first night, I slept in the reclined passenger seat because my travel partner fell asleep in the main bed before we set up the convertible sofa bed. I didn't want to wake them or scoot them over to make room.
The next night, we figured out how to set up the sofa bed, where I slept. The van's heating system kept my back warm during the night, and I enjoyed the regulated temperature.
On the third night, we swapped places and I slept in the main bed while my travel partner slept on the sofa bed with her dog. She liked the main bed and I preferred the sofa bed, so we agreed to swap back for the rest of the trip.
She got too warm at night and requested that we stop using the heater and open more windows. I tried to adjust by slipping into sleeping bags and covering myself with blankets but always ended up either freezing or sweating .
I kept thinking about how I could've kept the cabin at whatever temperature I wanted if I was traveling alone.
Gas prices were astronomically high, but fuel was an unavoidable expense.
The van took diesel, and we easily spent $100 every time we stopped to fill our tank halfway.
I saved a bit of money thanks to an agreement with my partner that I'd give her tarot readings if she chipped in a bit more for gas.
Though fuel was expensive, the overall cost was ultimately cheaper than it would've been to pay for more traditional accommodations, like hotels or Airbnbs.
Being in such close proximity for 10 days put our friendship to the test.
Traveling with another person can be challenging.
Seemingly minuscule differences — like enjoying different activities, operating on different schedules, having different ideas of cleanliness, and sleeping in different temperatures — can turn into bigger conflicts.
For the most part, my travel partner and I were able to compromise, but we were both transmuting feelings of resentment, which we addressed halfway through the trip.
It's also inherently difficult being in close quarters with someone else for a long period of time, and trips like this one put friendships and relationships to the test .
My first van-life experience had its low points, but I enjoyed it and would love to travel this way alone in the future.
Since returning from my trip, I've become increasingly interested in procuring a camper van so I can embark on a solo adventure.
My preference has always been to travel alone, as it allows me to cater each experience to my needs and desires. The journey becomes easier when I don't need to compromise, and I enjoy my own company.
I have yet to decide if I'll rent a vehicle for a short trip or buy a van to live in for a longer period of time. The possibilities are endless, and I'm excited to see how these ideas take form.
