ZZ Top comes to Melbourne: 'You can't lose with the blues'
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
With over 50 years in music under their belt, legendary rock/blues/boogie band ZZ Top brings their iconic sound to the King Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, March 6 in a concert presented by AEG. With an extensive catalog of music that includes hits like "La Grange," "Gimme All Your Lovin'," "Sharp Dressed Man," "Legs," "Cheap Sunglasses" and many more, ZZ Top delivers an unforgettable live rock experience.
I interviewed legendary vocalist and guitarist Billy Gibbons about the band’s longevity, his approach to music and the band's future. Let’s “Shake, Rattle & Know”: ZZ Top.
Question: Not many bands have had the combination of longevity and success of ZZ Top. What do you feel it is about your sound that has allowed the band to have that kind of multi-generational career?
Answer: The root of it all seems to remain with that great American art form which is stridently, "blue." It’s a sound of heartbeat biorhythms which humankind inherited in common. Makes accessing what ZZ does a function of nature. We’ve long said, “You can’t lose with the blues.” Plus, we play pretty loud.
Looking for more to do? 60+ fun things to do in Brevard in March, from outdoor festivals to St. Patrick's Day
Q: You have worked with some of the most legendary musicians of all time including Tito Puente, Les Paul, Jimi Hendrix and more. What is the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you throughout your musical journey?
A: " Play what you want to hear." That’s it. First and foremost is pleasing one’s inner and outer self. Doing just that, chances are pretty good others will dig what’s going down.
Q : If you had to pay to see a concert, who would you choose to see and why?
A: Something from the past, I’d see Jimi Hendrix again. Jimi was an enthralling innovator and a really nice guy. Today? Why not the Rolling Stones? Seeing Keith and Mick mixing it up is always a good time.
Q : You had been with Dusty Hill for so long, how hard was it to continue after his passing? Was there ever a time that you considered ending the band with his passing?
A : The gift is our main man, Elwood Francis, whom Dusty was very fond of, accepting taking up the bottom of the top. It’s a sonic blast and the show rocks on.
Q : What is your typical approach to songwriting? Does it start with the lyrics, the melody, the music or what is the process for you?
A: Rarely typical from the start, yet from that entry, anything goes! With a pickup phrase or chance title line in mind, gimme a backbeat and together it just might make it while the clock strikes twelve.
Q : You also release music as a solo artist. Is your approach to solo work different than how you approach music for the band ZZ Top?
A: Yes, in some stratospheric regard it is. For Billy F Gibbons and The BFGs, we kind of cast a wide net and aim for that something intriguing to deliver. For ZZ Top, we must ponder: “What would ZZ Top do?" It really is two things while sharing an element in common.
Q : I. along with most people who grew up in the '80s, grew to love ZZ Top because of their iconic music videos. What was your favorite video to film and how much input did the band have in their concept and development?
A: Most assuredly, "Sharp Dressed Man" as it's loaded with all the fave-rave elements like that car, the girls, “the kid” and us serving as de facto Greek chorus. Plus, it takes place in a night club. Swanky!
Q : What’s next for both ZZ Top and Billy Gibbons, either collectively or independently ?
A: We’re gonna keep on keepin’ on. ZZ is on a tour tear these days and we’re having a good time playing with generations of friends, fans, and followers. BFG is thinking constantly of what recording might continue pressing the string of left field stuff that begins with, “Hit it, don’t quit it!”

GUNS N' ROSES, ZZ TOP, ROSE TATTOO: Australian Tour Officially Confirmed
McManus Entertainment has announced the return to Australia of one of the world's greatest rock bands, GUNS N' ROSES , in March. Joining GUNS N' ROSES will be special guests ZZ TOP and Aussie rockers ROSE TATTOO .
Promoter Andrew McManus says: "I can't wait for these shows next March. Axl Rose is a legend and I can't wait to see GUNS N' ROSES play to their legion of Aussie fans again. I'm so proud to be bringing them back to Australia and am looking forward to a great tour with fellow rockers ZZ TOP and ROSE TATTOO ."
Hard rockers GUNS N' ROSES were last in Australia in 2010. GUNS N' ROSES are Axl Rose , DJ Ashba (guitar), Dizzy Reed (keyboards), Tommy Stinson (bass), Richard Fortus (guitar), Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal (guitar), Chris Pitman (keyboards) and Frank Ferrrer (drums).
GUNS N' ROSES ' special guests on their Australian tour are the legendary Texan trio ZZ TOP . ZZ TOP 's image has been as unchanging and memorable as their music. Billy F Gibbons is one of America's finest blues guitarists while Dusty Hill on bass and Frank Beard on drums (ironically the only member without a beard) provide the ultimate rhythm section support.
ROSE TATTOO join GUNS N' ROSES and ZZ TOP on the tour. The lineup features lead vocalist Angry Anderson , Dai Pritchard , Paul DeMarco , Geordie Leach and Randall Waller . ROSE TATTOO is touted as the best bar-room-blues-based rock band in the world and one of the most revered bands of all time. ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons Responds To Backlash Following Australian Tour Controversy
By Tom Williams
ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons has responded to the backlash which saw him cut short his Australian tour after a number of fans demanded refunds and criticised his local appearances earlier this week.
In a statement posted to ZZ Top and Gibbons’ Facebook pages today, the guitarist’s management have accused Australian tour promoters The Brewer Brothers of “miscommunication to ticket holders that a substantial musical performance would be part” of the musician’s latest Australian tour .
“Audience expectations regarding Billy Gibbons’ role as a performing musician in the recent Up Close & Personal dates through Australia seem not to have been in line with what he was asked to do when his services were engaged last year,” the statement reads.
“Mr. Gibbons was contracted to appear on those dates to discuss his passion for custom cars and hot rods with Jimmy Shine and to sign autographs and greet fans with no musical component called for or anticipated in the arrangement. It should be noted that, based on that understanding, he didn’t even bring, nor did he request musical equipment appropriate to such a performance.
“It appears that these dates were promoted in such a way as miscommunicate to ticket holders that a substantial musical performance would be part of these events. Billy Gibbons, ever the consummate professional, had not planned nor prepared that kind of program and regrets that his role in those dates appears to him been grossly misstated.”
Gibbons’ Australian tour was billed by promoters as an ‘Up Close & Personal’ tour. An official tour poster read, “Kick back with Billy as he also plays and reflects upon some of his favourite tunes and famous riffs.”
Some fans described Gibbons’ Australian shows as “disappointing” , claiming that only a handful of songs were played and that paid meet-and-greets were lacklustre.
Gibbons performed two shows in Thirroul and one in Newcastle before cancelling the only remaining show of his Australian tour in Brisbane, after police were called when fans allegedly threw bottles at the stage during his Newcastle concert.
Music Feeds has contacted The Brewer Brothers for comment.
UPDATE: Billy Gibbons’ Australian tour promoters The Brewer Brothers have now released a statement, which reads:
“The Brewer Brothers sincere [sic] apologize for fan’s [sic] that have been disappointed by Billy Gibbons’ appalling performance in his recent show’s [sic] in Australia. Gibbons was clearly engaged to perform the same show he did for the Brewer Brothers in 2016 at the Gold Coast Arts Centre, which was a success and was the basis for the the recent tour. All documents with time line will be post here directly.”

ZZ Top returns to Victoria, with a new member and Cheap Trick in tow

IN CONCERT: ZZ Top with Cheap Trick
Where: Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre, 1925 Blanshard St. When: Friday, April 22, 7 p.m. Tickets: $49-$89.50 (plus service charges) from selectyourtickets.com or 250-220-7777
Update: Read our review of the show.
The year 2021 was a tough one for ZZ Top, on several fronts.
For starters, the majority of band’s tour dates with Cheap Trick were postponed due to COVID-19. What’s more, the trio from Texas lost its longtime bassist, Dusty Hill, who died at 72 in July after more than 50 years alongside singer-guitarist Billy Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard.
That’s a humongous blow to the so-dubbed Little Ol’ Band from Texas, part of whose appeal was being one of the most stable and enduring acts in rock history. Prior to his death, Hill endorsed the band’s longtime guitar tech, Elwood Francis, as his replacement. Francis will be in the lineup when the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers perform Friday at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.
Some felt the band’s willingness to continue was somewhat strange, even though Hill wanted his friends to continue. Few acts were more across-the-board identifiable than the original ZZ Top, and any image without Hill standing to the right of Gibbons on stage seemed sacrilegious to some.
Gibbons was asked during an e-mail interview with the Times Colonist if he ever considered disbanding the group for good. His answer? “No.”
Which is fair. That shouldn’t be taken as an affront to Hill’s legacy; it says more about the musical bond that was forged between these brothers-in-arms, who were among the first to put Texas rock ‘n’ roll on the map in the 1970s. “It’s not a ‘new’ ZZ Top, it’s ZZ Top,” he said. “The genuine article abides. Attending a ZZ show, you get ZZ Top, pure and simple though it’s not certain how pure we are but certainly simple. Come on over and check us out.”
ZZ Top were crowned regional kings during their decades of service in the 1970s, but when the radio hits came rolling in at a record pace through the 1980s, resulting in more than 20 million records sold, their legacy was finally cemented. The group is now counted as one of the most successful rock bands in U.S. history.
Gibbons said that by continuing as a unit, he and Beard are paying tribute to Hill’s hard work, and honouring what they had created together. “Isn’t there a song that goes: ‘It’s so easy to remember to forget?’ Then again, application of the policy has long been ‘Keep on keeping on’ and that’s what we’ve done, and what we’re doing. I know that if there’s a lesson, it’s to not take things for granted, I’ll grant you that.”
Fans are happy to have them back on tour, no doubt. ZZ Top are returning to stages in Canada this week with longtime tourmates Cheap Trick in tow, another Rock and Roll Hall of fame group whose core lineup of Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander and Tom Petersson forges ahead. The result is a double-bill of arena rock by two of the best to ever do it, with more than 100 years of combined experience between them.
ZZ Top has been off the road since December, which gave the band and its crew a much-needed break following a massive run of 66 dates. Gibbons, however, has never been one for extended time off, judging by his pandemic activities. “[I] fixed up the house, checked the oil in a few of the cars, rode my bike, recorded a solo album ( Hardware ) in the California high desert,” he said.
“We weren’t too bored, but it’s great to be out and doing it and doing it loud again.”
Hill was a part of a significant historical project before his death, ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band from Texas , the 2019 documentary from Victoria-reared filmmakers Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen. The film shone a spotlight on the trio’s fascinating backstory, and put into perspective for the majority of ZZ Top’s fans — arguably for the first time — just how hard they worked to achieve success.
Now, with Francis’s arrival on bass, the group has a renewed sense of energy. Not even Gibbons knows when their time as a group will be up, and that is good news for the state of Texas. The longer ZZ Top hangs around, the more attention will be paid to their peers from the Lone Star State.
“There have been successive generations of great blues-based cats from Texas since we began this journey more than five decades ago,” Gibbons said. “Gary Clark Jr. springs immediately to mind, as does Leon Bridges, The Skulls, Tonton, Spoon, Hacienda. Might be something in the water, or that something in the air.”

Disappointing! After spending $340 each for VIP tix (not even front row/meet and greet) the show only lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes, probably the shortest concert I have ever attended. The guys seemed a little tired and bored, which is understandable after 50 years together or possibly because they just flew in from England. The sound system wasn't the best either, way too much bass overriding their vocals.
Report as inappropriate
ZZ Top performance was amazing.
The venue had some issues. The sound was very imbalanced in the beginning, almost could not hear Billy Gibons voice.
There was some trouble with the crowd too. Some people were fighting over standing versus sitting (it's a rock concert not the symphony, get up and dance I say!). In my opinion the usher was a bit too harsh on the dancing people. He was very rude to the ladies dancing and another guy ( just attending the show) even grabbed the arm of one of them. At that point it was way over the line. The people complaining about the non sitting attendees were very inappropriate (even got in my face), but nothing happened to them.
I am not sure about the finer details, but I do not believe the ushers were well trained in de-escalating conflict.
Well, they did not disappoint. After the warm-up act, Tim Montana (who, by the way, fit right in and was worth seeing), ZZ Top came out and were very loud, played all their hits, and were well worth the price of admission. Billy Gibbons even called out our fair city Cheyenne on more than one occasion. They were very entertaining and sounded great after all these years. Great time.

AUSTRALIAN TOUR \ 2011
Blues-rock legends ZZ Top return to Australia next April and their image has been as unchanging and memorable as their music. The legendary Texan trio has been together for more than 40 years and were inducted by Keith Richards into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” in 2004. It’s a remarkable achievement that they’re still very much together after more than 40 years of being on the road and in the studio. ZZ Top are a solid touring unit and have performed before millions of fans around the world. Their iconography beards, cars, girls and that magic keychain seems to transcend all bounds of geography and language. They’ve been referenced in countless cartoons and sitcoms and are true rock icons.
ZZ Top are genuine roots musicians. Billy F Gibbons is one of America’s finest blues guitarists while Dusty Hill on bass and Frank Beard on drums (ironically the only member without a beard) provide the ultimate rhythm section support.
Most famous for their hits Legs, Gimme All Your Lovin’ and Sharp Dressed Man, ZZ Top are sure to thrill their Australian fans with their sturdy American blues and rock style.
ZZ Top last toured Australia in 2000 and have sold more than 20 million records worldwide and achieved incredible chart success. Their 1983 album Eliminator was a multi-platinum smash in Australia and is “one of the greatest albums of the ’80s” according to Rolling Stone magazine.
Rose Tattoo and The Poor will also be appearing with ZZ Top .

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top Kick Off 2024 Tour with Powerful Setlist
via AIE TUBE / YouTube
Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top recently launched the second leg of their highly anticipated co-headlining Sharp Dressed Simple Man tour. The tour took off in style at Savannah, Georgia’s Enmarket Arena, where both bands delivered exhilarating performances. Fans were treated to an impressive lineup of classic hits, and the energy in the arena was electric.
Rocking Through the Skynyrd Legacy
Lynyrd Skynyrd, known for their Southern rock sound, showcased a 15-song set that took fans on a journey through their iconic albums, including (Pronounced ‘Leh-‘nerd ‘Skin-‘nerd), Second Helping, and Street Survivors. The band wasted no time, opening their set with the rousing “Workin’ for MCA” and “Skynyrd Nation.” They then proceeded to thrill the crowd with beloved hits such as “What’s Your Name,” “That Smell,” “Tuesday’s Gone,” and “Simple Man.” The performance reached its climax with the immortal one-two punch of “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird.”
According to the band, their setlist is a tribute to their legacy and the songs that have resonated with their fans throughout the years. Lead guitarist Rickey Medlocke spoke about their emotional connection to the music, saying, “We do a tribute every night to Gary, to the song ‘Tuesday’s Gone,’ and I can’t even look at the video.” This heartfelt homage serves as a reminder of the late guitarist Gary Rossington’s impact on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s music.
ZZ Top’s Unforgettable Performance
ZZ Top, the blues-infused rock icons, delivered a powerhouse performance of their own. Their 16-song setlist showcased their trademark hits from the albums Eliminator and Tres Hombres, igniting nostalgia among their fans. The crowd couldn’t help but groove to the infectious beats of “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Got Me Under Pressure,” and “Sharp Dressed Man.” Classic tracks like “Jesus Just Left Chicago” and “Waitin’ for the Bus” transported the audience to the heyday of ZZ Top’s career. The set concluded with a thrilling rendition of their renowned hit “La Grange.”
In addition to their own hits, ZZ Top included a few surprises in their setlist. They delighted the crowd with covers of Sam & Dave’s “I Thank You” and Merle Travis’ “Sixteen Tons.” These unexpected choices showcased the band’s versatility and ability to put their unique spin on beloved classics.
The co-headlining tour, titled the Sharp Dressed Simple Man tour, commenced last July, with this leg consisting of 36 shows spanning from Savannah to Ridgefield, Washington in September. Both Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top have faced significant hardships in recent years. ZZ Top mourned the loss of their bassist and vocalist Dusty Hill in 2021, with the band’s longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis stepping in to carry on the legacy. Meanwhile, Lynyrd Skynyrd bid farewell to their last original member, guitarist Gary Rossington, in 2023. Despite these challenges, both bands have persevered and continue to captivate audiences with their unwavering dedication to their music.
Looking ahead, fans can anticipate an “all-star Skynyrd record” featuring Rossington, as teased by guitarist Rickey Medlocke. The album aims to pay homage to the band’s legacy while embracing new opportunities. With the tour in full swing and the promise of exciting future projects, Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top are ensuring that their music lives on and continues to resonate with generations of fans.
