My Quick Guide to Banja Luka (Is it worth visiting?)

My Quick Guide to Banja Luka (Is Banja Luka worth visiting?)

  • Last Updated: December 3, 2023

In this Banja Luka travel guide, I will answer a few of your burning questions such as: is Banja Luka even worth visiting, what is there to do in Banja Luka and where to stay?

Banja Luka was the first stop on my Bosnia and Herzegovina backpacking trip. I actually spent 4 days there as I had to catch up on work so I had plenty of time to explore.

Not many travellers make it to Banja Luka. Most visitors to Bosnia and Herzegovina stick to Sarajevo and Mostar and then move on to other Balkan countries. But I think this country deserves so much more! So I decided to make a few additional and perhaps less popular stops.

That’s why I decide to travel to Banja Luka.

Guide to Banja Luka /Is Banja Luka worth visiting / Things to do in Banja Luka

I heard mixed opinions about Banja Luka. Some say there’s not much to see or do in Banja Luka and it’s best to skip it. Others loved it and even extended their stay. I decided to check it out for myself.

Banja Luka is the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the capital of the entity Republika Srpska.

It lies on the banks of the river Vrbas and is an amazingly green city for its size. The parks and paths along the river are a true delight!

The area around Banja Luka has been inhabited since ancient times, with traces of human presence dating back to prehistoric times. And although the city has some remarkable sights and attractions to offer, it doesn’t feel touristy. Not at all.

So is Banja Luka worth visiting?

If, like me, you’re travelling from Zagreb towards Sarajevo or Mostar, I highly recommend a stopover in Banja Luka. It’s a nice introduction to the country and an interesting way to see how people live away from the tourist centres.

If you’re looking for a great place to experience the everyday life of multicultural and multi-religious Bosnia and Herzegovina and learn about the history of the region in a city surrounded by the green, lush hills of Krajina region, Banja Luka is definitely worth visiting

However…

If you have already visited Sarajevo, Mostar , Jajce or Pocitelj and are thinking of making a detour just to see Banja Luka,  would probably skip it. Apart from Kassel Fortress and a few other landmarks, there isn’t that much to do in Banja Luka. From a touristy attractions point of view.

Banja Luka is a good city to visit if you want to catch up on work or just relax and do some sightseeing and walking in your free time without getting too distracted. There is plenty of day-to-day things to do in Banja Luka, such as visiting the excellent farmers’ market, many great cafés and restaurants, very good shopping and beautiful river walks.

So If you’re looking for an authentic town in Bosnia and Herzegovina where you can live like a local, have some digital nomad action or just stay away from tourist-infested towns, Banja Luka is for you.

But as a destination worth diverting to in its own right, I’m not sure.

It really depends on what you want from your travel experience.

I, personally,  was very satisfied with my visit. I enjoyed my city walks and explorations, learning about the city and its heritage. I enjoyed the buzzing city centre and couldn’t stop admiring the surrounding hills and greenery of the countryside surrounding Banja Luka.

So as I mentioned earlier,  if you are passing through the region, you should definitely stop by Banja Luka and maybe even stay for a night.

Are you Digital Nomad or Long Term Traveller looking for the best  Travel Insurance? Or are you just someone that is looking for flexible and reliable insurance that can be purchased and cancelled at any time?

As a slow-travelling nomad, I use and recommend SafetyWing Insurance.

I love the nomad-friendly features they offer. There is no need to specify the destination or the duration of travel. I personally love this feature as I never know how long I’m going to stay in a given country.

From your chosen start date, your insurance automatically extends every 28 days until you pick an end date. Just like a subscription. And you can cancel at any time.

How Many Days is Best for Visiting Banja Luka

You can definitely visit Banja Luka for a day, especially if you are travelling by car . If you’re driving from Zagreb to Sarajevo, you can stop for a couple of hours to see Banja Luka’s most important landmarks.

However, I recommend staying for a night. There are a few important landmarks that you’d want to see, as well as really good restaurants and lovely river walks that you should leave plenty of time for. Two days in Banja Luka gives you enough time to see everything and enjoy the city without rushing.

Banja Luka is also very well connected when it comes to public transport, so you can easily make a stop here if you’re travelling by bus. Most buses from Zagreb, Sarajevo and Mostar stop here, so there is no excuse to skip the city if you’re travelling on these routes.

Where to Stay in Banja Luka

The most popular type of accommodation in Banja Luka is short-term flats and studios, which you can rent through Booking.com or Airbnb. There are only a couple of hostels in Banja Luka but you can actually get a really nice private room or studio for an excellent price.

There are a couple of great hotels in Banja Luka like Courtyard by Marriott or Hotel Integra . Though as you scroll through the booking side you will notice mostly apartments and for a really good price.

I did just that and stayed at an Apartment Mirjana which had everything I needed including a washing machine as I was desperate at this point.

How to get to Banja Luka

Banja Luka is very well connected by public transport not only to other towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina but also to cities like Zagreb.

The best way to get to Banja Luka is by bus from either Sarajevo, Mostar or Zagreb if you are travelling from Croatia. Flixbus operates all of those routes making it super easy to book ahead.

Things to do in Banja Luka / Banja Luka Travel Guide

Banja Luka features a few attractions and landmarks really worth visiting. But the town is also pretty cool just to walk around and explore so here are a few noteworthy landmarks and things to do in Banja Luka.

Marvel at Orthodox Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

First things first, just take a walk around the buzzing town of Banja Luka. As you approach the central square of the city, you will notice a beautiful Orthodox Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. It’s absolutely stunning from the outside, but will definitely take your breath away as you walk inside.

While the exterior stands out with its gold and brown walls and impressive golden domes, the interior is particularly beautifully decorated with golden details,  intricately painted decorations and a dazzling giant central chandelier.

The church has a fascinating history. It was originally built in 1939 as Holy Trinity Church, but a German bombing raid in 1941 severely damaged its altar area. Shockingly, not only was it not allowed to be repaired, but the Ustashas even ordered its complete demolition, declaring it a “mound of the city”

Even under the Yugoslav government, the destroyed cathedral wasn’t given permission to rebuild, while many other buildings were reconstructed. It was only after the Bosnian War that the Eparchy of Banja Luka finally got the green light to rebuild the church naming it the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour as another church called Holy Trinity had been serving as a memorial to the previously demolished one – a remarkable accomplishment that the Orthodox Serbs thought was unattainable.

Visit Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska

Not far from the Cathedral, you will find a fascinating Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska which is definitely worth visiting. There are 2 noteworthy museums in Banja Luka but if you only have time for one it should be this one.  Admission to this museum is free, and it is a must-visit attraction in Banja Luka.

The museum, initially called the “Art Gallery of Banja Luka,” originated as a gesture of solidarity after the city was struck by a devastating earthquake in October 1969. Yugoslavian and international artists collaborated to collect around 750 artworks, which formed the core collection of the gallery.

Today, the Museum of Contemporary Art showcases local and regional artists, offering visitors a glimpse into the vibrant art scene of Banja Luka.

And Museum of the Republika Srpska

If you have enough time for one more museum pop into the Museum of the Republika Srpska.

If you’re eager to delve into the region’s history, this museum is a must-visit. It features fascinating exhibitions on archaeology, nature, and culture, with plenty of English information available. Just keep in mind that the museum doesn’t touch on the collapse of Yugoslavia or the Bosnian War. Nonetheless, it offers a captivating experience for history enthusiasts.

Admire Ferhat Pasha Mosque / Best things to do in Banja Luka

One of the best things to do in Banka Luka is to visit the Ferhadija Mosque(also called Ferhat Pasha Mosque ) – one of the most beautiful mosques in the Balkans.

The mosque was destroyed in 1993 at the order of the authorities of Republika Srpska as a part of the ethnic cleansing campaign. But was later rebuilt and inaugurated on May 7, 2016, and now stands as a remarkable testament to the Ottoman Islamic architecture of late 16th-century Bosnia-Herzegovina.

It is a truly beautiful mosque; if you visit, make sure you do so outside of prayer hours and dress appropriately.

Wander around the grounds of The Kastel Fortress

Don’t miss visiting Kastel Fortress, as it’s not a landmark that you will immediately notice. The mediaeval fortress is located on the left bank of the river Vrbas and is surrounded by lush greenery.

Although it’s a mediaeval fortress, it stands on the site of earlier fortifications that date back to Roman and even pre-Roman times. The fortress is beautifully situated, so be sure to take a walk along the river paths, and if you’re hungry, stop at the Kazamat restaurant, one of the best restaurants in Banja Luka.

Walk by the river and explore river parks in Banja Luka

A daily walk along the Vrbas River in Kej Starčevica Park was one of my favourite things to do in Banja Luka. On your walk, you’ll discover small restaurants and local bars perched on the riverbank and plenty of space to just relax and take in the greenery.

Walk all the way to the KAB bridge that leads to the city centre. You can also walk towards Patra Bridge , where you’ll find a couple of river restaurants on boats.

Enjoy shopping and people watching on Gentelmen Street

Dont miss Gospodska Street (gentleman’s street) which is the oldest and busiest pedestrian street in Banja Luka.

Its official name is Veselin Maslesa Street, but locals call it Gentelmen Street and there is an interesting legend behind it. Allegedly, Tomo Radulovic, a trader from Banja Luka, humorously displayed a sign on his shop referring to the street as “Gentleman’s Street.” Surprisingly, the Austro-Hungarian authorities found the joke amusing and accepted the name for the street.

It is a vibrant, colourful street lined up with shops, ice cream parlours and restaurants often colourfully decorated and always busy.

And shop for some fresh produce or tottaly random stuff at the Gradska Trznica Market

There’s no better way to immerse yourself in city life than to shop at a local farmers market. Be sure to visit Gradska Trznica Market, if only to walk around and soak up the local atmosphere.

It is not often visited by tourists, and I could clearly feel that. You can buy fresh veggies and wonderful fruits here, but also t-shirts, belts and other random bits, you might need!

I hope you enjoyed this Banja Luka travel guide and decided to stop there during your Bosnia and Hercegovina and Balkans travels. Maybe like me, you want to make your own up on whether Banja Luka is worth visiting.

I think you should. And if you do, let me know what your thoughts are!

Your Balkans Cheatsheet

If you are travelling around the Balkans by bus, Flixbus covers a  lot of the routes but they often cooperate with local operators. It is convenient to book on the Flixbus website if you want to pay for your journey upfront.

If you prefer to pay directly with the local operator, be prepared to pay in cash . To check the timetable BusTicket4.me is the most reliable. But I still recommend only using it for checking the times and purchasing the ticket at the bus station.

In the majority of Balkan countries, you will pay a 1€ (or equivalent in local currency) fee for luggage.

The bus is the best way to travel between Balkan countries but there are a couple of stunning train routes you cannot miss like Sarajevo to Mostar or Belgrade to Bar!

If you are considering renting a car you can browse all rental companies via Expedia!

Always, always triple-check the information you were given, especially when it comes to inter-city travel. Only because one person, in one place says there are no busses, it doesn’t mean it’s true. Triple check.

Only Slovenia and Croatia are within the Schengen Area so individual visa rules will apply. In 2024 we will also see Romania and Bulgaria joining Schengen Area.

Only Slovenia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Croatia use Euros. All other countries use their own currency. In some touristy spots, you will be able to use Euros but dont take it for granted. You will pay for a coffee pot from a souvenir stand in Mostar in Euros, but the supermarket will ask for Bosnian Marks.

12 Things to do in Banja Luka, Bosnia & Herzegovina’s Second City (Republika Srpska)

The second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and capital of the autonomous Republika Srpska (Bosnian Serb Republic), Banja Luka is a handsome city with layers of Ilyrian, Slavic, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian history.

That description might remind you of another city, Sarajevo. Despite having similar influences, Banja Luka is nothing like Bosnia’s capital.

Banja Luka sits at the confluence of the Vrbas and Vrbanja rivers in north-western BiH and is an open city of parks, wide boulevards and stately architecture .

When it became an important military centre for the Ottoman Turks after 1527, it was bestowed with some of its main landmarks, including the Ferhat Pasha Mosque – still considered one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in the region. Orthodox churches and monasteries came later in the 19th century.

Both the main cathedral and mosque were destroyed during different conflicts and later rebuilt. Through it all, the pre-Roman Kastel Fortress – the stone heart of Banja Luka – stood silent sentinel.

Christ the Savior Cathedral, a main landmark and must-visit attraction in Banja Luka, Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Located close to the border with Croatia, Banja Luka is easily reached from Zagreb or Northern Serbia by bus. If you’re flying into BiH with budget airlines Ryanair or WizzAir, you may find yourself arriving in Banja Luka.

Rather than just passing through as most travellers tend to do, I highly recommend spending a night or two getting to know Bosnia’s second-largest city. It’s a complete contrast to Sarajevo and a must-see if you want to gain a more complete understanding of the country.

12 best things to do in Banja Luka

We originally planned to spend two days in Banja Luka between visiting Tuzla and Jajce but ended up extending to three days because we liked the city so much.

Banja Luka is small, so you can get away with just one day to see the city sights plus an extra morning or full day for a nature side trip to Krupa na Vrbasu.

Here are the best things to do in Banja Luka during your visit.

1. Visit the incredible Ferhat Pasha Mosque

Ferhat Pasha Mosque (Ferhadija) in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

I’m not going to mince my words here: The Ferhat Pasha Mosque (also known as the Džamija Ferhadija Mosque) is simply one of the best mosques to visit in the Balkans region . Seeing this magnificent example of Ottoman Islamic architecture up close is reason enough to spend a day in Banja Luka.

Ferhadija was constructed in 1579 by a team of builders whose names have sadly been lost to history. Along with the main mosque, there was a courtyard, graveyard, fountain and trio of turbe mausoleums on the grounds, all protected by a high wall. The most eye-catching feature of the complex is the twelve-piped ablution fountain, which is fed by a nearby spring called Šadrvan.

The interior is paired-back and elegant, with vibrant ornaments decorating the domed ceiling.

Carpets and Islamic-style decorations inside the Ferhadija Mosque.

Fashioned from gleaming white stone and featuring delicate painted ornaments in blue and red, the mosque is simply stunning – both inside and out. Aside from its good looks, the thing that makes Ferhadija so interesting is its history and symbolism.

For context, it’s important to know that Banja Luka was the main Serb centre in northern BiH during the Bosnian War of 1992-1995. During this period, Bosniak Muslims were driven out of the city along with minority groups, and important cultural landmarks were strategically destroyed.

The Ferhadija was obviously a target and in 1993, it was demolished along with 16 other mosques. In 2007 work commenced to rebuild the mosque, stone by stone, and in May 2016 it opened its doors to worshippers from Banja Luka’s small Muslim community once again.

Prayer beads on the carpet at the Ferhat Pasha Mosque in Banja Luka.

Ferhadija is the perfect example of the phoenix-rising-from-the-ashes motif that plays out again and again in Banja Luka and across Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The mosque and grounds are open every day. Visitors are welcome to enter the main hall outside of prayer times.

2. And the equally impressive Christ the Savior Orthodox Cathedral

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Banja Luka.

No less grand than Ferhadija and with an equally compelling tale of destruction and rebirth, the Christ the Savior Cathedral on Trg srpskih vladara is Banja Luka’s main Serbian Orthodox temple and dominates the city centre.

It was constructed in the 1920s using gorgeous red and yellow-tinged travertine from Mesopotamia. Just a few short years after being consecrated in 1939, in April 1941, the church was hit and damaged by a German bomber. The Croatian Revolutionary Movement then ordered it to be demolished by hand.

The cathedral was reconstructed in the 1990s and reopened in 2009. When you visit today, you can see segments of original brickwork and fragments of white-stone ornaments displayed in a roped-off pen at the front – as if to say don’t forget.

Another stunning religious building, the cathedral design features golden domes and intricate stonework. Inside, vivid frescoes against an inky blue background decorate every inch of wall and ceiling.

Orthodox frescoes inside the Christ the Savior Cathedral.

The Christ the Savior Cathedral is open daily between 7am and 7pm.

3. Wander the grounds of Kastel Fortress

Kastel Fortress in Banja Luka, with the Vrbas river, stone bastions and a flag flying in the foreground.

The medieval Kastel Fortress long predates Banja Luka’s religious landmarks and is the oldest monument in the city. Unlike other fortifications in the region, it isn’t perched on a hilltop or mountainside, rather it sits flush with the rest of the city on the edge of the Vrbas river.

Maybe that’s because the castle wasn’t exactly built to defend the city from invaders, but rather to protect a precious asset: The road. The Roman Salt Route or Via Salaria passed directly through Banja Luka and traders came this way from the Adriatic coast to the interior of the Balkan Peninsula.

Kastel Fortress was built by the Romans atop older fortifications for the purpose of defending this trade route. When Banja Luka fell under Austro-Hungarian rule, additional towers, walls and underground tunnels were added.

Banja Luka's Kastel Fortress by night.

The last round of renovations was completed in 2016 and has left Kastel Fortress in the splendid state it stands today. The huge complex comprises 11 bastions and towers, various silver stone buildings and an armory.

The whole area is very pretty, with swathes of green grass and shady trees. Walking paths lead you around the complex and along the river bank. At night the paths are lit by lantern lights, which adds a special magic. The layout reminds me a lot of Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad .

In summer you can watch a live music performance on the outdoor stage within the castle grounds. I also recommend stopping off here for lunch – read on for the details.

4. Eat Banja Luka cevapi at Kazamat, one of the best things to do in Banja Luka for foodies

A plate of Banja Luka Cevapi at Restaurant Kazamat.

Kazamat is one of the oldest restaurants in Banja Luka. If you only have time for one sit-down meal during your visit, have it here.

The restaurant has a spectacular setting nestled inside the castle grounds with wonderful views of the fortifications and river from the outdoor terrace. The interior dining room is exactly what you’d expect from a castle restaurant, with iron chandeliers and suits of armour for decoration.

Kazamat has a long menu with all the classic Bosnian foods accounted for. The best thing to order is definitely Banja Luka Cevapi (banjalučki ćevapi) , the city’s signature take on this Balkan staple.

Banja Luka-style cevapi differs because the ground beef patties (usually served separate) are connected to form one big patty. Traditionally a patty has four parts. At Kazamat, the grilled cevapi is served tucked inside a grilled somun bread, accompanied by french fries and plenty of chopped white onion.

5. Take a stroll down Gentleman’s Street

Locals out for a walk on Gospodska, Gentleman's Street, in Banja Luka.

Veselin Maslesa Street is Banja Luka’s main pedestrian boulevard and a great place to go for a walk and people-watch. The street’s local nickname, Gospodska, means ‘Gentleman’s Street’, a moniker given to the avenue by a local businessman some time in the 19th century that ended up sticking.

The entire street is lined with gorgeous Art Nouveau facades in a palette of pastels, much like Širok Sokak in Bitola . Today’s tenants include fashion boutiques, jewellers and sidewalk cafes.

The best time to go walking on Gentleman’s Street is at dusk when the entire city of Banja Luka comes out to shop and stroll.

6. Shop for fresh produce at the Gradska Tržnica market

People shop inside Banja Luka's Gradska Trznica food market.

Gradska Tržnica or city market is the biggest farmers’ market in Banja Luka. It consists of an undercover market hall plus a large open roofed area.

Hundreds of vendors congregate here every day to sell fresh fruit and veg, honey, cheese, herbs and cut flowers. Roam the rows of stalls to see what you can rustle up (perhaps provisions for a picnic at Krupa na Vrbasu). The upper level of the market is devoted to clothing shops and homewares.

Local produce and honey for sale at the market in Banja Luka.

As with all markets, this is a great opportunity to see what’s in season and get a taste for the local food culture . The market is open every day from 7.30am (6am on Sundays, the main market day) and winds down by early afternoon.

7. Cycle to the Trappist Monastery and buy a wheel of cheese

Banja Luka Trappist Monastery.

Banja Luka is surrounded by beautiful nature and I highly recommend getting out and exploring the green fringes of the city. Krupa na Vrbasu village to the south is the most popular day trip (more on that later). For a quick and easy alternative, hire a bicycle in town and go cycling the opposite way, north-east along the Vrbas river.

The Mariastern Abbey or Trappist Monastery, 6km from the centre, is an ideal destination. The way is mostly flat and very scenic, passing over the river at the end.

The monastery complex is a bit of a hidden gem and turned out to be one of my favourite places in Banja Luka. Established in 1869 by monks from the Trappist order, it was once the biggest abbey of its kind in the world. Today it’s the smallest, with only a couple of resident monks staying on to continue the traditions of cheesemaking and rakia distillation.

Statue of founder Franz Pfanner at Banja Luka's Trappist Monastery.

Yes, these monks really know how to do cheese! Trappist cheese is a unique, very mild cow’s milk cheese that’s only found in France, Belgium and here in BiH. Rounds are sold directly to the public at the small shop on the grounds of Mariastern.

Colourful bottles of flavoured rakia are also available.

Trappist Cheese at Mariastern Trappist Monastery in Banja Luka, Bosnia.

When we visited, one of the monks kindly gave us a tour of the monastery and church, and showed us part of the cheese-making process. Don’s miss the chance to experience this wonderful example of almost-forgotten traditions at the only surviving Trappist Monastery in Southeastern Europe.

The area around the monastery is named Trapisti after the monks and is very beautiful. You can cycle further on if you wish. I recommend stopping for lunch at Lovački restoran on the way.

We hired our bikes from Sport Shop Jošo for 20 KM (around 12 USD) per person for the day.

8. Check out the street art in Borik

‘Chicha’ by Bulgarian artist Bozko, a street mural in Borik, Banja Luka.

Borik district is one of the newer parts of Banja Luka, having been built up in the 1970s after an earthquake in 1969 devastated much of the city. There’s nothing particular to ‘see’ in Borik, thus many people avoid this area. But if you’re cycling to Trapisti, you’ll pass right through.

The neighbourhood is mostly residential with row after row of Socialist-style concrete apartment blocks. Turns out those bland facades are the perfect artists’ canvases. In the past few years, Borik has become the epicentre of Banja Luka’s street art scene.

There were half a dozen interesting large-scale murals in Borik at the time of our visit, and many more have popped up since.

Pictured here is ‘Chicha’ (2015) by Bulgarian artist Bozko (top), ‘Find Your Way To Fly’ (2014) by Croatian-Serbian duo Artez and Lonac (above left), and ‘Icarus’ (2015) by Polish duo Etam Cru (above right).

9. Visit the Museum of Contemporary Arts

A man examines a painting inside the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Banja Luka, Bosnia.

There are two museums in Banja Luka worth visiting. The first is the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska, my personal favourite and top pick if you only have time for one.

Founded in 1971, the museum is set inside the old Austro-Hungarian train station. The building dates to 1891 and is one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture in the city – thus it’s worth visiting the museum just to see the building.

The exhibition program focuses on local artists from Banja Luka and the region. At the time of our visit we saw part of the permanent collection of paintings, sculptures and new media art. Many of these young artists explore themes of identity in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina, so in this respect the museum is a very interesting insight into modern society and politics.

The Museum of Contemporary Art is open from 10am-10pm daily. Entrance is free.

10. And the Museum of the Republika Srpska

The second museum on this list, the Museum of the Republika Srpska, is located behind the market. It’s a much more austere Socialist-style building, purpose-built in 1992.

Exhibits cover local Banja Luka history from the Stone Age until 1945. The most interesting parts in my opinion are the Ottoman-period relics and the multimedia exhibition that covers the Jasenovac complex, a series of concentration camps built near Zagreb in the 1940s.

The museum doesn’t touch on the collapse of Yugoslavia or the Bosnian War. All signage is in English, but be aware there is a pretty glaring bias in some of the didactics.

The Museum of the Republika Srpska is open weekdays from 8am-8pm and weekends from 10am-2pm. Admission costs 1 KM.

11. Stop by the beautiful Banski Dvor Cultural Centre

Across the road from Christ the Savior Cathedral, Banski Dvor or Ban’s Court is another eye-catching building in Banja Luka.

It was built in 1931-2 as a home for the local military general. Today it serves as a cultural centre, hosting theatre performances, music recitals and art exhibitions.

12. Pop into the curious Cathedral of Saint Bonaventure

The 1970s Cathedral of Saint Bonaventure in Banja Luka.

The Cathedral of Saint Bonaventure is one of only four Roman Cathdolic cathedrals in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Like Ferhadija Mosque, it was damaged in the Bosnian War and reconstructed in the early 2000s.

The hyper-modernist design is the work of Zagreb architect Ljubo Matasović, who unveiled the cathedral in 1973. It replaced an older cathedral from the 1850s that was destroyed in the earthquake. The unusual shape supposedly represents a tent, a tribute to the residents of Banja Luka who were forced to live in temporary accommodation after the 1969 earthquake destroyed their homes.

Inside, the church features stained glass and beautiful mosaics. The surreal clock/bell tower was added in 1991by Slovenian architect Danilo Furst. A concrete staircase spirals up the centre, it looks more like an air control tower than a church tower!

Crkva Svete Trojice (Church of the Holy Trinity) and the Eparchy of Banja Luka, two important Orthodox buildings, are located right next door.

BONUS: Take a day trip to Krupa na Vrbasu for canyoning & rafting

A wooden water mill surrounded by mist in Krupa na Vrbasu, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The town of Krupa na Vrbasu is just 25km or half-an-hour by road south of Banja Luka towards Jajce. This is a gorgeous landscape of rambling rivers, canyons and historic wooden water mills.

Swim in the gorgeous Krupa Waterfalls, hike to the old watchtowers for a view, visit the historic Krupa na Vrbasu Serbian Orthodox Monastery, and partake in a range of outdoor activities including rafting on the Vrbas river (summer only).

Like in the nearby Pliva Lakes , there are beautiful old water mills scattered around the water’s edge. Some are still in use today – you can buy fresh wheat flour ground on the mill stones from shops in town.

To get to Krupa from Banja Luka, take a BOČAC company coach from the city bus station near the train station. There are 8 departures daily on weekdays between around 6am and 10pm. Check times locally. The fare is around 3.5 KM and the journey takes 45 minutes.

Where to eat in Banja Luka: Best restaurants & cafes

Restaurant Kazamat inside Kastel Fortress (number 4 on this list of things to do in Banja Luka) is definitely my favourite place to eat. Lots of other options for both Bosnian cuisine and international fare.

  • Mala Stanica: Another popular eatery in Banja Luka, Mala Stanica is set inside a historic building and has a very cosy interior. The food here is fine-dining-style (both local and European dishes). Save room for dessert: The chef here is famed for his chocolate souffle.
  • Kod Brke: A great option for a quick meal, Kod Brke is known for its thin-crust pizza (the prosciutto is my pick). They open bright and early at 7am and do great Italian coffee as well, making it a good option for breakfast.
  • Lovački restoran: This family restaurant is a good place to stop for lunch on your way to the Trappist Monastery. Meat is the star of the menu, but the grilled veg and salads are also very good, all prepared with fresh local produce.

Banja Luka is Bosnia’s second largest city, after the capital Sarajevo. It is the regional capital of the primarily Serb -governed area of the country, and has undergone much reconstruction since the civil war of the 1990s – now it’s one of Bosnia’s most modern and up-and-coming cities.

The river vrbas.

A key feature of Banja Luka’s natural surroundings is the Vrbas river, a vibrant green river that flows through the heart of the city. The city straddles the banks of the river, which provides a relaxing zone to explore with picturesque natural beauty. The name ‘vrbas’ comes from the local name for ‘willow’, thanks to the number of willow trees that line the river banks and provide shade for peaceful walks alongside it. There is also a number of quiet cafés along the river, perfect for a coffee break away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Away from the city, the river also offers opportunities to kayak, canoe, and hike along the river basin.

This tourist-friendly museum covers the history of the Serb ethnic group in Bosnia as well as the larger Balkan region. Its exhibitions cover a long period of history, starting with archaeological discoveries up to the atrocities committed against Serbs by the regional fascist groups during the Second World War. However, those familiar with Bosnia’s recent history and ethnic conflict will notice that much of the key details surrounding the civil war are ignored, doubtless because the museum aims to cast Serbian history in a generally positive light, and it is important to treat the museum’s criticisms of Croatia with suspicion

There has been a fortress of some kind on this spot since the Romans first constructed a building here, although there is evidence that suggests neolithic-era people also inhabited and fortified the area. The fortress is close to the centre of Banja Luka, and was an important military fortification as well as a strategic hub during the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman wars. Things to spot within the fortress include a Roman sarcophagus, ancient stone walls, and lovely views of the river from atop the fortifications.

Lying on the Vrbas river, this gorgeous city is known for its tree-lined avenues, boulevards, gardens, and parks. Banja Luka is influenced by different cultures and it is noticeable in the city’s architecture which is pretty amazing. A lot of summer festivals will keep you well entertained, so be sure to get there in the summertime. In case you have never been here we are bringing you the ultimate Banja Luka guide for first-time visitors .

So, let’s start exploring this beautiful green city on the Vrbas river.

Temple of Christ the Saviour

Whether you are religious or not, religious objects in Banja Luka are very interesting to see. Temple of Christ the Saviour is an Orthodox Byzantine-style temple settled in the city center. It was first built in the 1920s but got destroyed in WWII and the one that you see today opened its doors in 2004. This gorgeous yellow-orange landmark with gold-plated domes is set on a small grass field that is often full of playful children. This temple is the largest religious building in Banja Luka and, we must say, the most beautiful one.

Banski Dvor Cultural Centre

Opposite from the temple you will see another very important landmark of Banja Luka – Banski Dvor Cultural Centre . It is also built in the 1920s as a palace for the local governor and most important Banja Luka’s figure Svetislav Tisa Milosavljević . Today it is the cultural hotspot of the city where you can attend many interesting events such as exhibitions and concerts. Set in the building of an old neo-renaissance railway station that was transformed into the Art Gallery after the earthquake in 1969 and in 1981 it was totally adapted museum purposes that it serves nowadays. The collections that are shown are various, with art ranging from painting, graphic design, photography, and illustration to new media and mostly from Serbian artists, but foreign artists too.

Gospodska street

Gospodska street (Gentlemen’s street) or Veselina Masleše , which is its official name, is the most popular street in Banja Luka. This is the street that will give you a hint of what the city looked like in the Austro-Hungarian times since most buildings still look almost the same nowadays – very elegant neo-renaissance buildings. You have to stroll down this street to see and to be seen.

Ferhadija Mosque

Another one of the religious buildings in Banja Luka that is seriously breathtaking is Ferhat-Pasha Mosque or “Ferhadija” . It was built by Ferhat-Pasha Sokolović who desired to build the most amazing mosque in this part of the world and he succeeded, seriously. Unfortunately, it was demolished in the war in 1993, but it is reconstructed in 2016 and looks more beautiful than ever. It is an outstanding example of very interesting and different Ottoman Islamic architecture in multicultural Banja Luka.

Experience for your taste buds – ćevapi

Wherever you go you just have to try a traditional meal that everyone is proud of. In Banja Luka that meal is ćevapi – grilled minced served with flatbread lepinja , onion, and kajmak (creamy dairy product). You must visit Mujo’s restaurant (the man who originally introduced Banja Luka’s ćevap) and try it. And forget about a fork and a knife – everything tastes better when eating with hands.

Life in Bosnia: Banja Luka – A Forgotten Place of Bosnia

  • Home   /   Europe >>   /   Balkans >>   /   Life in Bosnia: Banja Luka – A Forgotten Place of Bosnia

Banja Luka, Bosnia

Banja Luka is the capital of Republika Srpska, one of the two entities of Bosnia-Herzegovina, the other being the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. As you can see from the name, the population of Republika Srpska consists of mainly Bosnian Serbs versus Bosniaks and Bosnian Croats from the Federation. Banja Luka has around 200,000 people, making it the second biggest city, after Sarajevo. Over the past year, I have visited a lot of places in the Federation, but I have never properly been in the Republika Srpska. Thus I was curious to go there and see whether it would be any different from the Federation. I know that I should visit the entire entity to come to a clear conclusion, but I don’t have the opportunity to do that–and nobody ever will see something in its entirety–so I thought the capital was a good place to start.

There are of course obvious differences between the Republika and the Federation. You can easily spot are ubiquitous Orthodox churches, brightly lit and colored standing next to road signs in Cyrillic (Latin is used here as well). In the Federation you also see Cyrillic, but often people spray graffiti over it to show how they feel about anything that has to do with Serbian culture. Other than churches and the Cyrillic alphabets, there is not much difference between these two entities. This makes sense because they are still in the same country sharing the same culture.

In Banja Luka, you can find excellent coffee bars, friendly people and interesting history, just like everywhere else in Bosnia. Banja Luka, nonetheless, is a bit different than other Bosnian towns in a way that it reminds me more of an European city: the setup, bigger roads, special sidewalks for disabled persons. You don’t see mosques lining one street block after another. Things just feel slightly more modern though I can not exactly pinpoint how I come to this conclusion.

If you are going to Banja Luka I would recommend you walk around a little bit and you’ll run into the Orthodox Cathedrals at some point. It has special architecture and has been rebuilt recently after being destroyed in the Second World War. A new mosque is being built because sadly none of the 16 existing mosques survived the war from 1992 to 1995. What surprises me is the sight of many mosques in villages near Banja Luka given the percentage of Bosniaks living in the municipality is only 4%, against 92% of Serbs and 2% of Croats. In 1991 the statistic was very different. 55% of the population was Serbian, 15% was Bosniak, 15 % was Croat, and another 12% consisted of Yugoslavs, who didn’t identify themselves with any of the three main religions and ethnic groups.

The main attraction of the city is the fortress used to defend the city against invading Ottomans. Now instead of Turks and fights, one can sit and eat peacefully at the restaurant, and in the summer go to various concerts held there. Below, the river Vrbas quietly flows guarding the fortress, contemplating the past and has many Bosnians and Bosnian-Serbs wondering about its dubious future. It is a pity that I was there for only a few days as I would have loved to go deeper into the mere surface contemplating the differences between the entity and the federation, as well as to talk to more people and discover things that the eyes can not see.

How to get there?

Since Banja Luka is an important town in Bosnia, it is not difficult to get there by public transport. The city has both a bus and train station, next to each other. You can easily reach Banja Luka from Zagreb. It takes at least 2.5 hours or longer depending on how busy it is at the border. There is also a scenic route that passes by stunning landscapes from Mostar and takes about 5 hours. There are also several buses a day from Sarajevo, leaving as early as 5:00 in the morning and takes 5 hours.

About Cindy

banja luka travel blog

Understand [ edit ]

Banja Luka is in essence the hub of northwestern Bosnia, an area called Bosanska Krajina that is quite forested. It has important bus, air, and motorist connections and is also a notable financial sector with its own stock exchange, but aside from that it is distinguished for its sporting affairs like tennis, handball, rafting, and, of course, football. On the whole, the city has a pleasing aesthetic with leafy pedestrian streets, a location on the Vrbas River with verdant hills in the background, and a university, and a continental climate with four seasons.

Banja Luka has a long history going all the way back to ancient Rome, as in Illyria and Dalmatia and other polities of that old world power. And since then, it has transcended medieval, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian states and the trials of modern warfare. On a bad day in WWII, the Bishop of Banja Luka was killed and thrown into the Vrbas River, and Serbs and Jews during the whole period met their demise in camps nearby.

The city was battered by the Bosnian War in the 1990s, during which Bosniaks and Croats were expelled and mosques were demolished. Serbs moved in, established the Republika Srpska, and made Banja Luka the de facto capital. Thus, the city almost has two identities, yet today the municipality seems to make it work.

Climate [ edit ]

Banja Luka has a continental climate, with harsh winters and warm summers. The warmest month of the year is July, with an average temperature of 21.3 °C (70 °F). The coldest month of the year is January, when temperatures average near freezing at 0.8 °C (33 °F). Annual precipitation for Banja Luka is about 988mm. Banja Luka has an average of 143 rainy days a year. Due to the city's high latitude, it snows in Banja Luka almost every year as well. Strong winds come from the north and north-east.

Talk [ edit ]

In Banja Luka most locals call their language Serbian, although there are plenty who refer to it as Bosnian, BHS, or as 'Naš' (our [language]). The languages are virtually the same. Sometimes you'll find (road) signs written in Cyrillic. The younger generation usually speaks English, and maybe even other languages such as Russian, Spanish or German.

By bus [ edit ].

The bus station is approximately 3 km to the northeast of the centre. There are taxis at the exit of the bus which for ~10 marks (KM) can drive you to the centre. The city bus leaves from next to the train station, 200 m away, and a fare to the centre is less than 2 km.

Several international buses from Western Europe to Bosnia follow the route Zagreb - Brod - Derventa - Doboj - Sarajevo , providing you with a wide detour around Banja Luka

Normally you would get out of those buses at Derventa but if the weather is alright and its not in the middle of the night, you could ask the bus driver to let you already out at the Novska service station (3 km after the Novska exit) on the Zagreb-Bosanski Brod highway, approx 3 hours before Derventa. From the Novska service station its another 15 km hitchhike to Okučani, the highway exit to Banja Luka (the bus won't let you off there, it is off the highway, but it's easy for cars to drop you off there). From Okučani its 3 km (hitch)hike to the Bosnian border. You can then cross the border on foot (or hitching) and continue the last lap of your travel by taking a bus to BL in Bosanska Gradiska (approx 8 KM). This will almost always save you several hours, and widens the spectrum of buses available to travel to Banja Luka.

By plane [ edit ]

Smiljić bus company arranges a minibus/taxi to and from the airport to the old bus station ( stara autbuska stanica - old bus station) in the centre of town. Its recommended to make a reservation by email ([email protected]), otherwise you have to be quick to get out of the terminal and to the bus first—there are only about 20 places. The charge is 10 KM for the one-way ticket. In general, the buses operated by the aforementioned company run between the front of the airport and the Banja Luka "old" and "new" bus stations (based on the arrivals/departures from the airport). Although the schedules are impossible to find online, I've confirmed and tested that the general modus operandi (as stated by BNX airport) for these buses is as follows: For example, for a flight departing at 8:05 in the morning, there will be a bus departing from the 'old' bus station at 6:00, stopping at the 'new' bus station at 6:10, and then proceeding to the airport. Both the "new" bus station and the transport company itself readily confirmed that, but the information itself is hard to find online. Whole journey might take around 30-40 minutes. In the case of late flights to the airport, it was possible to request a drop-off point along the route. The bus driver asked everyone for their preferred drop-off location. Capacity might vary, but it seems to be sufficient for every scenario, from microbus to large bus. For the late arrival it was possible to pay with both currencies (EUR and BAM) at the bus.

If you're traveling with three or more people, taking a taxi might be just as cost-effective. Alternatively, you can try to walk out to the main road and catch a lift there.

For the return journey to the airport, it was possible and perhaps required to buy a ticket at the bus station. The airport itself is very minimal, they handle just a couple of flights weekly and the services there are minimal - don't count on buying anything there. There is essentially one gate, so there's no need to rush. The airport has only a small café and limited seating for flights departing around the same time.

By train [ edit ]

The train and bus station is about 3 km northeast of the centre. Connections to: Doboj (2hr) and Novi Grad. There are only a few trains passing the station each day, but tickets are a bit cheaper than the bus (around 9 BAM to Doboj), and the train is generally more comfortable.

Closest train station in Croatia with fast connection to Zagreb is Okučani , accessible by car or bus.

Ride-sharing [ edit ]

Ride-sharing to and from Banja Luka is possible using BlaBlaCar web/app or facebook groups like Trazim- nudim prevoz (Searching- offering transport) .

Get around [ edit ]

By bike [ edit ].

You can have your bike fixed á la minute at the Bike Servis Shop [dead link] ( [email protected] ), in the Ul. Gundulićeva 104 - next to the football stadion. Tel. 051/301-470. Another bike shop is 5 doors down in the row of buildings.

The tourist office owns 15 rental bicycles, which are maintained by the above bike shop. Rental: 1 KM/hour, or 15 KM/day.

There's a bike sharing network (nextbike) with few stations scattered across town; but none at the station.

Banja Luka has dozens of city- and suburban buses. There are frequent busses to/from the bus/train station. From the main square (opposite Park Petar Kočić) take lines 6 or 10 for less than 2KM.

Just behind the springs starts a marked serpentine hiking path up to Banj Brdo (completely in the cool forest).

Events [ edit ]

  • Demofest . Festival of alternative music, usually lasting three days, consisting of two different parts: each evening there is a contest of demo bands, with two semifinal nights and the finals, which are held on the third day of the festival, and concerts of bands with more reputation following each part of the contest.
  • Banjalukanima . Animaton films, October
  • Kratkofil . Festival of short films in summer
  • Neofest . Pop music, organised by Dom Omladine.

Buy [ edit ]

Many establishments (especially hotels) accept euros (notes only). ATMs are all over the place with MasterCard, Visa and other offshoots being accepted. Credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and Diners Club are readily accepted by larger establishments all over the country. When changing money, it is best to ask for small bills as shops often are hard-pressed for change. Travelers cheques can be readily changed at Raiffeisen and Zagrebačka Banks.

Tipping [ edit ]

It is not compulsory to tip in Banja Luka, though a reward of about 10% for good service in restaurant or bar is always appreciated.

Souvenirs [ edit ]

You can get local, handicraft souvenirs for example at the shop of association "Duga" . All items there are made of natural materials by traditional technologies, and are decorated with ornaments from original traditional clothing from the area of Dinara. Their collection contains: ethno souvenirs, decorative products and clothing. Address: Etnoradionica "Duga", Kralja Petra I Karađorđevića 88 (the same street as the city hall) All of the handicrafts are produced in an ethical manner and by purchasing them you will help Duga to continue providing aid to all of its beneficiaries and support to other local humanitarian projects.

Next to Kastel is also a souvenir shop, look for the big "Suvenir"-sign.

Eat [ edit ]

Traditional food [ edit ].

If you like meat, you'll love Banja Luka. Meat is a standard for any meal. However, there is still lots of interesting meals you can make do if you are a vegetarian.

Here is a list of the most popular traditional dishes:

  • Ćevapi - small meat sausages of pork, lamb and beef mix. They are usually served with fresh onions and pita bread (lepinja) on the side. Ćevapi usually come in pointer finger size sausages and are offered by five or ten pieces, although the variety commonly found in Banja Luka (banjalučki ćevap) usually consists of quadrangular pieces of meat.
  • Pita - traditional pies, e.g., burek (with meat, which is different than in Serbia !), krompirusa (potato), sirnica (cheese) zeljanica (spinach), tikve (courgette) or with gljive (mushrooms). Normally, krompirusa and tikve are vegan (no animal products). You'd eat your pita with yoghurt (not vegan)
  • Bamija - a dish of meat cooked with okra, a traditional vegetable.
  • Sarma - meat and rice rolled in cabbage or grape leaves.
  • Prasetina - pork grilled over an open fire.
  • Teletina - is veal, usually served in cutlets. Veal in B&H is not produced by locking calves in a cage to ensure softer meat.
  • Janjetina - lamb grilled over an open fire.
  • Musaka - a meat pie made of minced beef, very similar to shepherds pie.
  • Filovane paprike - fried peppers stuffed with minced meat and spices.
  • Pršut - air dried ham, similar to Italian proscuitto.
  • Suho Meso - dried meat, either beef or pork.
  • "Ispod Sača" - similar to Dutch oven . A metal dish is placed on hot coals, the food is placed in the dish and covered by a lid which is then completely covered in hot coals and left to bake.
  • Vlašićki Sir - similar to Travnički cheese. It is a highland cheese from the mountain villages on Vlašić Mountain in central Bosnia.
  • Mladi Sir - Cottage cheese. It has a soft texture and is unsalted. Oftentimes it is served with a cream sauce on top. It is very healthy.
  • Kajmak - is analogous to clotted cream in the UK. The top layer of fat skimmed from milk, it is creamy and extremely tasty. Kajmak and Uštipak (doughnut type roll) is a wonderful appetizer.
  • Iz mjeha - sheep milk poured into a specially sewn sheep skin 'bag'. After a time the dry cheese is taken out of the skin container and the result is a strong, dry cheese that resembles real Parmesan.

Drink [ edit ]

Alcohol [ edit ].

Rakia or Rakija is considered to be a national drink. Its alcohol content is normally 40%, but home-produced rakia can be a tongue burner, typically 50 to 60%! Frequently used as a common drink at all celebrations, birthdays, holy holidays, slava (Orthodox Christian custom of honoring a patron saint) and even funerals. Common flavors are slivovitz, traditionally made from plums and lozova, which is made from grapes. But, you can also distill from pears, peaches, apricots, apples, figs and cherries. Plum and grape rakia are sometimes mixed with other ingredients, such as herbs, honey, sour cherries and walnuts after distillation.

Nektar pivo is the local beer, brewed in Banja Luka.

Respect [ edit ]

Banja Luka is the capital of Republika Srpska, one of the two constituent entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina. There is an ongoing dispute between Bosnian unionists and Serb separatists, and in general the underlying conflicts are far from resolved. For these reasons it is best to abstain from discussing politics, unless your conversation partner brings up the topic him/herself and asks for your opinion.

Banja Luka is the second-biggest city in Bosnia and the de facto capital of the Republika Srpska, but there's very little here to detain travellers for long. After Serbian nationalists systematically destroyed most of the city's historical and cultural heritage – including mosques, Catholic churches, a historical clock tower and various 16th-century buildings – a rather bland, soulless place was left. The 'ethnic cleansing' wasn't limited to the built heritage either; the Serbian population, which sat at around 50% before the war, is now around the 90% mark.

HISTORY OF BANJA LUKA

Due to its natural wealth, geographical and strategic position, the area of Banja Luka has always been very tempting for the neighbouring nations. For this very reason, many world conquerors, have struggled for power over this city, in a desire to capitalize on its wealth. Banja Luka was first mentioned in 1494 in the wording of the Hungarian king Vladislav II Jagelović. In 1521, Banja Luka fell under the four-century rule of the Ottoman conqueror. During this long period of Turkish rule, 216 public buildings were erected, many of which represent the main features and characteristics of the city today. In 1878, Banja Luka was occupied by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which in the next 40 years of its rule, develops economy and trade, builds roads and strives to make maximum use of the city’s great natural resources. Since 1929, the area of Banja Luka has become the centre of the Vrbas Banovina of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. During the four-year reign of Ban Svetislav Tisa Milosavljević, Banja Luka is culturally revitalizing, many buildings are built including the building of the Banski Dvor and Administration, Hotel Palace, National Theater, City Park, Sokolski dom, Ethnographic Museum, hospitals and schools.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

The river vrbas.

One of the main features of the Banja Luka city is the vibrant Vrbas river, which springs up on Zec Mountain and flows south through the heart of Banja Luka. River Vrbas was named after the trees that adorn its banks, creating a natural shade–the tree of “willow” (Vrba). Just 12 kilometres from the centre of Banja Luka, Vrbas made its way to the namesake canyon, in which numerous endemic and relict plants and animal species developed under special conditions. For those who want to explore the quiet side of Vrbas, you can enjoy promenades and well-prepared walking trails along the river, perfect for relaxing and escaping the city’s verve. For adventurers, rafting on the Vrbas will be an unforgettable experience. Where else would you have the opportunity to go down through rapids and cascades at night, all through the illuminated route and river canyon?

At the very top of the hill, you will find the monument to the fallen Krajina victims of the National Liberation War, the work of the famous Croatian sculptor Antun Augustinčić.
