Kent rail firm says lines reopen after power fails
Rail lines between Kent and London have reopened following delays and cancellations caused by power failure.
Southeastern said services from the Medway Towns to London via Sole Street were unable to run from 07.45GMT but repairs had been made just before 13.00.
In its latest update, it said some disruption is still expected until 15:30 with services on some routes facing delay or being revised or cancelled.
It said: "Lines have reopened following failure of the electricity supply at Sole Street."
The power failure impacted rush-hour commuter services from Kent into the capital.
As well as the London-bound line, the line towards Gillingham and Faversham also had to close to enable repairs to be carried out by Network Rail.
Passengers were being advised to use Southeastern's High Speed services, at no extra cost, to reach London and use the London Underground between London Terminals to reach their final destination.
Tickets continue to be accepted on the DLR, the Elizabeth Line between Woolwich and Stratford and the 190 bus service between Chatham and Gravesend.
Replacement bus services were in operation between Rochester and Swanley, calling at Sole Street, Meopham, Longfield and Farningham Road.
Anyone who is delayed by 15 minutes or more is eligible for compensation.

Kent Rail services will face weekend disruptions
Friday, February 9, 2024 Favorite
This weekend, travelers through Kent will experience disruptions in train services due to planned engineering works, as announced by Southeastern. These works will impact routes through several key stations including Gravesend, Dartford, Bromley, Margate, Minster, and Ramsgate. To mitigate the impact on commuters, replacement bus services will be deployed where lines are closed, particularly affecting early morning journeys before 7:30 am between Dartford and Gravesend on Sunday, February 11.
Further engineering activities are scheduled between Margate, Ramsgate, and Minster, as well as between Ramsgate and Sandwich, encompassing the entire day on Sunday. These will necessitate the closure of certain lines, with rail replacement buses facilitating travel between the affected stations. Additionally, Bromley will see bus replacements for trains due to engineering works at the station on the same date.
Specifically, on Sunday, February 11, services between Dartford and Gravesend will see early morning trains replaced by buses, affecting multiple London Charing Cross to Gravesend services and others between London Cannon Street to Dartford. Similarly, services between Margate, Ramsgate, and Minster, as well as Sandwich and Ramsgate, will be adjusted, with trains operating on limited routes and accessible rail replacement buses covering the gaps.
The disruptions also extend to Bromley South, where engineering works will prevent train services from operating to and from the station throughout the day. Affected routes include trains between London Victoria and Orpington, as well as other services that will be retimed or diverted.
These planned engineering works and the subsequent adjustments in service are expected to have a considerable impact on global tourism, particularly affecting international travelers planning to visit Kent during this period. The disruptions highlight the importance of infrastructure maintenance and upgrades in ensuring the long-term sustainability and reliability of rail transport, a crucial component of the global travel and tourism ecosystem. By facilitating smoother travel in the future, these efforts contribute to enhancing the attractiveness of destinations like Kent for tourists worldwide.

Rail and Tube strikes in April and May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected as Underground and train drivers walk out
One of the Tube strike days also coincides with a planned rail strike. Here's everything you need to know.
Monday 25 March 2024 09:49, UK
Tube services will be disrupted in April and May as drivers stage two 24-hour strikes.
Drivers who are members of ASLEF, the train drivers' union which represents 96% of train drivers in Britain, will walk out from their roles on the London Underground over pay and conditions.
They will strike on:
Monday 8 April
Saturday 4 May
Rail strikes also taking place
Drivers at 16 rail companies are also going to stage a fresh wave of strikes, plus a six-day overtime ban, their union ASLEF announced.
Both strikes are part of a long-running dispute.
The rail strikes will take place on:
Friday 5 April
Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, East Midlands Railway, West Midlands Trains, and CrossCountry.
Saturday 6 April
Strikes will affect Chiltern, GWR, LNER, Northern, and TransPennine Trains.
Strikes will affect Greater Anglia, c2c, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern/Gatwick Express, South Western Railway main line and depot drivers, and SWR Island Line.
Members will also refuse to work their rest days from Thursday 4 to Saturday 6 April and from Monday 8 to Tuesday 9 April .
Why are the strikes happening?
Finn Brennan, ASLEF's full-time organiser on the London Underground, said in a statement: "ASLEF Tube train drivers will strike in April and May in a long-running dispute over London Underground's failure to give assurances that changes to our members' terms and conditions will not be imposed without agreement and that all existing agreements will be honoured.
"Despite a previous commitment to withdraw plans for massive changes to drivers' working conditions, London Underground management has established a full-time team of managers preparing to impose their plans.
"They want drivers to work longer shifts, spending up to 25% more time in the cab, and to remove all current working agreements in the name of 'flexibility and efficiency'.
"Everyone knows what these management buzz words really mean. It's about getting people to work harder and longer for less.
"Management has also failed to deliver on commitments given to us on making drivers' cabs secure, on police numbers on Night Tube and on training.
"Our members simply don't believe what LU management tells them anymore. ASLEF are, as always, ready to talk, but we want to see real action from management - not easily broken promises."

Transport for London (TfL) said in a statement: "We have been in long-term discussions with our trade union colleagues on how to modernise procedures and processes on London Underground to improve the experience both for staff and customers.
"We have no plans to impose these changes and have committed to no one losing their job as part of these changes, and we have engaged with our unions to demonstrate that no change will be made that compromises our steadfast commitment to safety on the Tube network.
"We urge ASLEF to continue discussions with us so that disruption for Londoners can be averted."

Mick Whelan, ASLEF general secretary, added on the rail strikes: "Last month, when we announced renewed mandates for industrial action, because under the Tories' draconian anti-union laws we have to ballot our members every six months, we called on the train companies, and the government, to come to the table for meaningful talks to negotiate a new pay deal for train drivers who have not had an increase in salary since 2019.
"Our members voted overwhelmingly - yet again - for strike action."
A Rail Delivery Group spokesperson said: "Nobody wins when industrial action impacts people's lives and livelihoods, and we will work hard to minimise any disruption to our passengers.
"We want to resolve this dispute, but the ASLEF leadership need to recognise that hard-pressed taxpayers are continuing to contribute an extra £54m a week just to keep services running post-COVID.
"We continue to seek an agreement with the ASLEF leadership and remain open to talks to find a solution to this dispute."

My family tried traveling by train instead of car, and I get the hype. Here are 6 ways rail travel is better.
Posted: May 12, 2023 | Last updated: July 12, 2023
- After taking road trips throughout the US, I tried traveling by Amtrak train instead.
- My experiences on the rails have been comfortable and hassle-free, albeit not the most efficient.
- Trains aren't the answer for every trip, but I've begun to incorporate them into more of my travels.
Ahead of my family vacation to California, I dreamed of cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway . There was just one problem: My son suffered from terrible car sickness.
To avoid scrubbing vomit out of a rental car's upholstery, I booked tickets on the Amtrak Coast Starlight from Oakland to Santa Barbara.
The smooth, nine-hour journey offered all of the magnificent ocean views I would've wanted to see on the road trip, with none of the upset stomachs.
Since that trip, my son has found ways to manage his car sickness, and we've successfully traveled to 44 states by car. But there's a host of reasons my family is still choosing to return to rail travel .
Many Amtrak trains offer scenic views of some of the country's most beautiful locales.
When it comes to spectacular views , there's a lot to see from train windows.
Though not all of Amtrak's routes pass idyllic settings, some journey through the US' most beautiful landscapes. I've enjoyed gazing at vineyards, mountains, harbor seals, and more on my rail travels.
Many Amtrak trains, including the Coast Starlight, have observation cars with giant picture windows designed with sightseeing in mind.
As someone who's generally the designated driver on road trips , I savor the ability to sit back and take in the stunning scenery without the fear of taking my eyes off the road for too long.
Some trains also stop in underrated destinations I wouldn't have otherwise visited.
Amtrak offers picturesque long-haul journeys through the Rockies , the American Southwest, and beyond.
The prospect of gazing at snowcapped mountains and soaring red-rock formations is exciting, but these journeys also offer a compelling opportunity to stop and explore less-touted areas along the way — ones that I probably wouldn't go out of my way to visit otherwise.
Though some of the highlights from my road trips have been stumbling upon hidden gems in locales often labeled as flyover states (like spots in the US' heartland), driving through the Midwest's flatlands can feel like a bit of a slog.
However, I find stretches of farmland infinitely more charming when I view them out of a train window instead of a car dashboard.
Depending on the itinerary and season, traveling by train can be more affordable than driving.
Between gas prices and rental-car charges, road trips can be expensive ventures.
When it comes to Amtrak trains, you can expect to pay a premium for a private room in a sleeping car or a coveted last-minute ticket. However, you can usually find reasonably priced tickets with some advance planning.
On a trip my family recently took from New York to Pennsylvania, all three of our tickets for the Amtrak Keystone Service cost me a total of $47.50 — an absolute steal considering our trip fell during a peak travel period.
In many major cities, I probably would've paid the same amount for a few hours of parking.
I feel safer traveling by train than by car, especially in poor weather conditions.
It gives me peace of mind to know that taking a train is statistically safer than driving a car . Plus, Amtrak has a lot of safety standards in place .
Though I feel confident in my driving abilities, I prefer not to be behind the wheel in certain situations, like when I have to navigate Manhattan streets or battle icy road conditions.
Trains are usually less impacted by weather, making them a solid transportation option in less-than-ideal conditions.
Amtrak's seats feel wider and more comfortable than the ones in most cars.
It's no surprise that traveling can make you feel a bit cramped, especially if you're constricted to a car seat for a long drive.
Regardless of how I travel, I'm always very eager to reach my destination and stretch my legs. In my experience, I've found that even the most bare-bones Amtrak trains offer wider seats than I've seen in most cars and a reasonable amount of legroom.
The trains' observation and dining cars are a real treat for my family since they allow us to enjoy peaceful moments, play a rousing game, or simply take advance of the freedom that comes with not being strapped in one place.
Rail journeys give me time and space to work, spend time with family, and rest.
Train travel isn't always the fastest way to reach my destination, but I've found that it's the mode of transportation that gives me the most time to be productive .
As someone who works remotely, trains are the perfect place to multitask and catch up on my to-do list, something I can't accomplish as easily in cars.
I obviously can't use my computer while driving, and attempting to do so in the passenger seat makes me queasy. However, traveling by train gives me an easy way to knock out work, help my son with his homework, read a book, or take a nap.
Trains aren't the right option for every trip, but I look forward to incorporating more of them in my future travels.
Amtrak trains have provided a lot of benefits for my family, but like any mode of transportation, they come with their own set of downsides. Trains, especially long-haul ones, are known to be plagued with delays. So you do have to pack some patience and be flexible.
The routes Amtrak offers can also be limiting and inconvenient, with the journey between some destinations requiring multiple train changes that take you hundreds of miles and many hours out of the way.
I've decided that they're a great way for my family to travel in addition to road trips, but not in place of them.
I adore the spontaneity and impulsiveness that comes with traveling by car and wouldn't trade the experience of pulling off the road to explore a quirky roadside attraction or stop for fresh baked goods at a local vendor's stand.
I'm already plotting future trips and can't wait to see what's ahead on the rails and on the road.

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes
By Rohan Mattu
Updated on: March 27, 2024 / 7:50 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore
BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city.
A bridge column was hit by a large container ship around 1:30 a.m., sending bridge workers and vehicles into the Patapsco River. A water search for six missing workers turned to a recovery effort Tuesday night.
Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.
Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse
Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future.
The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access.
The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed.
Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes.
Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.
Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?
The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping.
The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA.
Tractor-trailer inspections
Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic.
The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).
Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.

Francis Scott Key Bridge collapses in Baltimore after ship strike, residents react
Baltimore's Key Bridge is not the first: A look at other bridge collapse events in US history
Parts of the 1.6-mile, four-lane Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, collapsed into the Patapsco River after it was struck by a large cargo ship Tuesday morning.
Local, state and federal crews responded to the collapse and were searching for six construction workers who were on the bridge when the ship struck. Two people were rescued in the initial hours of the search: one unharmed and the other in "very serious condition," said James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore City Fire Department.
The Dali, the container vessel, was chartered by the major shipping company Maersk and was carrying its cargo, according to a statement from the company. It was slated to arrive early April in Sri Lanka, according to MarineTraffic, a global ship tracking service.
The bridge is not the first to have collapsed in the past 100 years. Here's a look at bridge collapses in recent U.S. history.

1967: Point Pleasant Bridge in West Virginia
The Point Pleasant Bridge, colloquially known as the Silver Bridge for its aluminum paint, collapsed during heavy rush hour traffic on Dec. 15, 1967.
The 2,200-foot suspension bridge carried U.S. Route 35 and spanned the Ohio River, connecting Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio. Forty-six people died in the collapse, and two of those people were never found.
An investigation found the collapse was caused by a failure of one eyebar chain that had been noted in a preliminary report 10 months earlier.
The collapse led to federal regulations on the inspection of bridges and an increased emphasis on bridge safety through the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1968 , which established a National Bridge Inspection Program.
1980: Sunshine Skyway bridge in Florida
In 1980, the Sunshine Skyway bridge collapsed after it was struck by a ship. Thirty-five motorists and bus passengers were killed.
A 1,200-foot chunk of the bridge, which connected St. Petersburg and Bradenton, collapsed after the massive Summit Venture freighter slammed into one of its central support piers.
When a section of the bridge fell into Tampa Bay, it took a truck, seven cars and a Greyhound bus with it.
The Herald-Tribune, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported the crash happened during an intense thunderstorm , with winds reaching 80 mph and heavy rain. Visibility was near zero, according to local historians who made a documentary film about the collapse.
After the collapse, the freighter remained stuck beneath the bridge, with part of the roadway on its bow. Photos from the time show how one motorist was able to stop his car just inches from where the bridge fell into the water.
1993: Big Bayou Canot Bridge in Alabama
On Sept. 22, 1993, barges pushed by a towboat collided with the Big Bayou Canot Bridge near Mobile, Alabama. Just eight minutes later, an Amtrak passenger train derailed from the bridge. Forty-seven people were killed 103 were injured.
The towboat pushing the barge had made a wrong turn on the Mobile River and entered the Big Bayou Canot. In heavy fog, the towboat's pilot, Willie Odom, struck the bridge, which forced the end of the bridge span out of alignment by about 3 feet and kinked the track.
The accident is the deadliest train wreck in Amtrak's history and in Alabama railway history.
2002: 1-40 bridge collapse in Oklahoma
The I-40 bridge, which spanned the Arkansas River just southeast of Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, collapsed on May 26, 2002, after a freight barge struck a pier supporting the bridge.
The captain of the barge's towboat reportedly lost consciousness, and the barge lost control and crashed into the pier support.
A section of the bridge collapsed, and 14 people were killed.
Victims and families settled a lawsuit with the towboat company, Magnolia Marine Transport Co., in May 2003 for an undisclosed amount.
Crews took about two months to rebuild the bridge − the estimate had been six months − and traffic resumed in July 2002.
2007: Mississippi River bridge in Minnesota
The I-35W Mississippi River bridge, also known as Bridge 940, spanned the Mississippi River just downstream from Minneapolis.
At the time, it was the third-busiest bridge in Minnesota, carrying about 140,000 vehicles a day.
It collapsed into the Mississippi River during the evening rush hour on Aug. 1, 2007, killing 13 people and injuring 145.
Several reports had cited problems with the bridge, and in 2005 it was given a rating of "structurally deficient" and possibly in need of replacement, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Construction had been taking place on the bridge weeks before, including joint work and replacement of lighting, concrete and guard rails.
According to an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, the collapse was probably the result of a design flaw from thin steel gusset plates that helped connect steel beams.
2024: Bridge partially collapses in China
In the early morning of Feb. 22, a part of the bridge over China’s Pearl River in Guangzhou collapsed after a container ship collided with the bridge. Five people died and three were injured.
Four vehicles and one electric motorcycle fell off the bridge after the collision. The dead included a driver of an empty bus, the driver of the motorcycle and three people in trucks that went into the river, according to city officials.
“Improper operations” by the ship’s crew caused the collision, according to officials at the city’s press conference.
The container ship Lianghui 688 collided with the Lixinsha Bridge twice while navigating through the waterway. The city official said the ship hit adjacent bridge piers, leading to the rupture of the bridge deck over the space between the piers.
Based on reports obtained by online news platform Jimu News, the ship measured about 197 feet in length and 59 feet in height and transmitted its final position around 5:29 a.m. on Feb. 22.
Weibing Peng, an expert on bridge construction and collapse incidents from Zhejiang University of Technology analyzed the incident and told Jimu News that the ship first hit one pier on a diagonal course, then swung nearly parallel to the bridge and hit a second pier. The second pier tilted, resulting in the partial collapse of the bridge.

Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning after a support column was struck by a cargo ship, sending cars into the Patapsco River, launching a search-and-rescue operation and prompting Maryland Gov. Wes Moore to declare a state of emergency.
Here’s what you should know about the Key Bridge:
What is the history of the bridge’s name?
The Francis Scott Key Bridge is named for the writer behind “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The site of the bridge is believed to be within 100 yards of where Key saw the bombing of Fort McHenry Sept. 12, 1814, which inspired the poem that became the national anthem.
The battle at Fort McHenry was a key victory over British forces during the War of 1812. The American flag raised Sept. 14, 1814, celebrated the victory and inspired the words “broad stripes and bright stars” in Key’s song.
When did the bridge open?
Construction for the 1.6-mile bridge started in 1972, and it opened March 23, 1977.
In the 1960s, the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached its traffic capacity, leading the state to conceive of and build the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the final link for the Baltimore Beltway (Interstate 695).
The bridge, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers, is one of the longest continuous-truss bridges in the United States.
The now-defunct Greiner Engineering Sciences Inc., which also built the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, began construction in 1972 of what at the time was called the Outer Harbor Crossing.
Harry R. Hughes, then state secretary of transportation, was on hand to collect the first 75-cent toll.
The bridge arched over the Patapsco River from Hawkins Point, in Baltimore City, to Sollers Point, in Baltimore County.
The four-lane bridge, which soared 185 feet above the Fort McHenry Channel, the entranceway to the Baltimore Harbor, hosted 7,448 vehicles in its first 11 hours of operation.
Tolls were 75 cents for passenger cars and 50 cents an axle for trucks.
“For the first time, motorists will also be offered a dramatic panorama: not only of the downtown skyline, but Fort McHenry, Canton, the Inner Harbor, the hills of Catonsville, Towson’s high rises and the television tower near Druid Hill Park,” The Sun reported.

The steel bridge is one of the harbor’s three toll crossings and is located on the I-695 outer-harbor crossing. It’s part of a 10.9-mile Beltway span that includes a dual-span drawbridge over Curtis Creek and two parallel bridge structures carrying traffic over Bear Creek, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.
How is the bridge used?
The bridge, which cost about $110 million in the 1970s, was seen as an efficient alternative because it has lower operating and maintenance costs, as well as more traffic lanes than the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel.
The bridge carried more than 12.4 million commercial and passenger vehicles in 2023, according to a state government report issued in November.
The Key Bridge allows wide loads and hazardous material that can’t go through the Harbor Tunnel or Fort McHenry Tunnel. Currently, vehicles transporting hazardous materials are prohibited in tunnels and “should use the western section of I-695 around tunnels,” the transportation authority posted on social media.
What was the economic impact of the bridge?
With the collapse of the Key Bridge, one of Maryland’s major sources of revenue is at a halt.
The Port of Baltimore has created about 15,300 direct jobs and with nearly 140,000 jobs linked to port activities, according to a February statement from Moore, a Democrat.
Moore said in the statement that the port ranks first among those in the nation for volume of automobiles and light trucks, roll-on-roll-off heavy farm and construction machinery, and imported sugar and gypsum.
The Port of Baltimore handled 847,158 cars and light trucks last year, which led all other ports in the nation in its 13th consecutive year, according to the February release.
Baltimore Sun librarian Paul McCardell contributed to this article.

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro
You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..
The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.
If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..
Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

Belorusskaya
If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.
The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

Mayakovskaya
To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

Novoslobodskaya
It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

The golden trim around artwork is also very common
Prospekt Mira
Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Komsomolskaya
On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice. For me, this station resembles a presidential palace. You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.
Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

Elektrozavodskaya
When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Ploschad Revolyutsii
Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

These are some of what I think are the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro. Which ones are your favourite? Would you add any to this list?

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!
Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.
You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.
It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say
I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.
I imagine Moscow would have been a little different 13 years ago but these stations have probably always looked beautiful
Food and Footprints
You chose some great stations for this write up! Beautiful details in these stations and would love to visit them sometime. Particularly like the Komsomolskaya station with that yellow ceiling!
Thank you very much. Komsomolskaya seems to be a lot of peoples favourite stations too
Sumit Surai
Wow! Without the text I would have thought them to be some museum or gallery.
I know exactly what you mean!
Rosie Fluskey
Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!
Wow, that’s a lot of artwork. I wonder how old some of these pieces are?
Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.
My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne
True. It is like having a free trip to an art museum/gallery. I hope that you can one day visit Moscow and see for yourself.
Oh wow, I would never have known that these were metro stations. The ceilings remind me of how you need to look up sometimes, even in the commuter rush!
It is true about life in general, we just go from A to B looking directly in front of us instead of around us
Wow, I would have never guessed that these were stations. The decor is so pretty and not one I’m used to seeing at metro stations. Love the ceiling at The Komsomolskaya metro station.
They certainly don’t look like metro stations. The ceiling there is one of my favourites too!
