1 Week St. Lucia Itinerary for Fun & Relaxation

1 Week St. Lucia Itinerary for Fun & Relaxation

Saint Lucia's volcanic landscape is a natural wonder. Lush rainforests, beautiful volcanic beaches, green mountains and geothermal springs make it a nature escape you won't forget. One of its biggest draws are the dormant twin volcanic peaks, Gros Piton and Petit Piton, which are a designated UNESO World Heritage site.

Saint Lucia's natural beauty combined with its selection of luxurious amenities and unique hotels make it the perfect destination for a mix of relaxation and adventure. We recommend spending 1 week in St Lucia to unwind and explore the sights.

Although St. Lucia is known to be very romantic with couples celebrating their honeymoon or anniversary, I spent the week on the island with my sister for a 'sister's trip' and we had a blast!

In our St. Lucia itinerary we intermingle relaxing beach days with adventurous exploration days . Discover local life on the island, go beach hopping, dine with sunset views over the Pitons, swim in thermal baths, hike to spectacular viewpoints and eat delicious Caribbean cuisine all in your one week in St. Lucia.

Our St. Lucia guide includes the best time to visit, what driving is like, the best area to stay, where not to stay, a 7 day itinerary and our Top 5 travel tips.

Best time of year to visit St Lucia

going places travel near st lucia

The best time of year to visit St Lucia is from December - May. These are the sunniest months with the least amount of rain.

June - November sees the highest amount of rainfall. Avoid traveling during September & October when hurricanes are most likely to occur.

Driving in St Lucia

going places travel near st lucia

Driving in St Lucia is not the relaxing island drive you would expect. Small windy roads take you up and down mountains through the volcanic landscape. And when you go off the main highway, the roads usually get even steeper, bumpier and skinnier. Deep rain gutters on the sides of the roads can also make driving more stressful, especially if you're not used to driving on the lefthand side.

Even with that said, driving is one of the best ways to explore the island if you're up for the adventure. It's so much fun and you get a lot more from exploring on your own time.

Tips for driving:

  • Familiarize yourself with the road conditions to your destination. For example, the 2-mile side road to Anse Chastanet Beach is bumpy, narrow and steep (this is the only place we visited that we hired a driver for). You can usually look up the road conditions in forums online or YouTube videos to see if you're comfortable.
  • Rent the smallest car possible - it makes driving on the narrow roads feel more comfortable, especially when commercial trucks go by.
  • Don't drive a manual car if you aren't used to driving on the lefthand side of the road - you will have to shift wth your left hand!

If you're not comfortable with driving, you can easily hire a private driver through your hotel. You can hire for drop off/pick up to a certain location or a half day/full day depending on how many stops you want to make.

Best area to stay in St Lucia

going places travel near st lucia

We explored the areas of Rodney Bay, Gros Islet, Marigot Bay, Cap Estate and Soufriere, which are popular areas travellers stay. Out of these places we can easily say that Soufriere is the best area to stay in St. Lucia for a few reasons:

  • Soufriere is the hub for exploring the famous Pitons and has some of the most dramatic views on the island. The Pitons are a magical sight that you don't want to only see on a day trip. Watching the sunset over the two volcanic peaks is special. It feels like a true nature escape in the rainforest.
  • It's way less crowded compared to other areas of the island and is far away from cruise ships.
  • This area feels more local and not like a commercial tourist hub.
  • There is a good mix of wild beaches, local beaches and luxury beaches that are just minutes away.
  • The volcanic area is known for its geothermal attractions and mineral rich natural pools
  • If you're traveling with your lover, it's definitely the most romantic area to visit.
  • It has a good selection of unique boutique hotels and luxury resorts.
  • Soufriere is about a 45 minute drive from the airport, whereas the popular northern area is about 1.5 hours away.

Popular areas we don't recommend staying:

  • Rodney Bay/Gros Islet: feels commercial with big resorts and cruise ship crowds. It's not as beautiful as other parts of the island and is a 1.5 hour drive from the Pitons.
  • Cap Estate - this area is quiet with some nice beaches, but it lacks a "local feel" with its manicured luxury villas and golf course. It's a 1.5 hour drive from the Pitons.
  • Marigot Bay - This is a popular area for yachts to dock. The beach here felt touristy and not as nice as others. There also isn't a lot around here to do and could get boring fast. Under an hour drive to the Pitons.

Where to stay in Soufriere

For luxury: rabot hotel from hotel chocolat.

going places travel near st lucia

The boutique hotel has 25 luxury eco lodges tucked away in the rainforest with stunning views of the Pitons. We were able to watch the sunset over them from our large terrace. The amenities at Rabot Hotel are also amazing with its pool and restaurant overlooking the Pitons and its peaceful garden area and spa that feel like an oasis in the jungle.

Breakfast is included in your room rate. Choose their daily feature (eggs benedict, French toast etc.) or create your favourite combination from their selection of eggs, bacon, vegetables, toast, oatmeal, fresh fruit, smoothie, coffee, or tea.

At lunch you will find free snacks by the pool. We played Scrabble poolside as we munched on chocolate muffins, plantain chips, cinnamon roll bites and pecan cookies. There is also free water. Their Rabot Restaurant is also one of the best on the island and specializes in cacao-inspired cuisine.

The location is perfect with stunning beaches and the village of Soufriere just minutes away.

1 Week St. Lucia Itinerary

Settle into your hotel and eat cacao inspired-cuisine at Rabot Restaurant

going places travel near st lucia

Settle into your hotel

Welcome to paradise! Most hotels are about a 45 min - 1.5 hr drive away from the airport, so if you're not driving, make sure to arrange pick up with your hotel in advance. Once you arrive at the hotel, settle into your room and relax with a refreshing Saint Lucian rum cocktail or Piton beer .

Eat cacao-inspired cuisine at Rabot Restaurant

Assuming you're staying in Soufriere region, book dinner at Rabot Restaurant, Rabot Hotel's open-air restaurant serving cacao-inspired cuisine. They have their own cacao plantation and delicately use cacao in both savoury and sweet dishes. Most people associate cacao with sweet dishes, but it has in fact been used for over 3,000 years in savoury dishes!

The view of the pitons is gorgeous from the restaurant and it feels like you're dining in the middle of a rainforest.

Unwind with spa and pool time, and treat yourself to dinner at Dasheene for one of the best sunset views over the Pitons

going places travel near st lucia

Unwind with spa and pool time

Today is about unwinding and fully embracing island time . Leave your phone in your room and benefit from the hotel's amenities. Meditate in the quiet garden space, enjoy a poolside lunch, go for a refreshing swim, have tea while taking in your surroundings, book a spa treatment, or read that novel you've been meaning to get to.

I always bring Scrabble with me when I'm traveling. It's a great game to play when you're having downtime.

Treat yourself to dinner at Dasheene

Explore Soufriere village and hang out at a local beach

going places travel near st lucia

Explore the cool village of Soufriere

Soufriere is the coolest little village and one of the best ways to discover local life on the island. It has friendly locals, colourful buildings down every street and even a new beach park at Hummingbird Beach. The small fishing port was once the capital of St. Lucia under French Rule and is now the hub for exploring the Pitons and surrounding geothermal area.

Don't miss popping into one of the liquor stores to get well-priced Saint Lucian Rum . Our favourite brands are Chairman's Reserve for amber rum and Marigot Bay for their Banana Creme liqueur.

Swim at the local beach in Soufriere

going places travel near st lucia

After exploring the cute town, walk over to Soufriere Beach Park to spend the rest of your day on the Caribbean Sea. Hummingbird Beach didn't feel like a "resort beach". It felt wild swimming with the Pitons nearby and the locals were very nice. In fact, we got a great recommendation from a local, coming up soon in this itinerary!

Note: If you're not driving, arrange transportation with your hotel. Rabot Hotel offered free shuttle service to Soufriere. If you are driving, parking is free at the beach park.

Hike the "stairway to heaven", eat lunch at Orlando's and go for a dip in the hot springs

going places travel near st lucia

Hike the "stairway to heaven"

The Tet Paul Nature Trail is an easy 45 minute hike (0.6 miles) that takes you up to one of the best viewpoints in the Soufriere region. Once you reach the top of the stairs, you're rewarded with panoramic views of the Pitons, rainforest and Caribbean Sea. At the very top there is a little hut and hammock where you can buy a beer or water.

The entrance fee is 27 ECD (~10 USD) per person. View the trail map on AllTrails.

Eat authentic Carribean cuisine at Orlando's

going places travel near st lucia

Once you're done your hike, fill up on authentic Caribbean food at Orlando's. The Gault Millau awarded restaurant serves up delicious daily specials in the courtyard of celebrity chef, Orlando Satchell's home. It's right across from the Soufriere Beach Park. We were offered the chicken or fish special to choose from. It was one of the best meals we had on the island.

Take a relaxing soak in the New Jerusalem Mineral Baths

going places travel near st lucia

The volcanic area of Soufriere is known for its geothermal attractions, like the popular Sulphur Springs Park and Toraille Waterfall. We got a local tip to visit New Jerusalem Mineral Baths, a unique hideaway with mineral rich natural pools located about a 4 minute drive away from the town of Soufriere. It's a hidden gem that not many tourists know about, especially since it's not on typical guided tours. We were the only ones there!

We visited Torraile Falls afterwards, but it was underwhelming compared to New Jerusalem Mineral Baths.

How to get to New Jersualem Mineral Baths

going places travel near st lucia

To get to New Jerusalem Mineral Baths, drive about 4 minutes down St. Arthur Lewis Street from Soufriere village and look for a sign on the righthand side of the road that says "Welcome to New Jerusalem Mineral Baths". Don't search for it on Google Maps because it's inaccurate.

going places travel near st lucia

The sign is before the junction with Cresslands road, and if you drive past Toraille Waterfall, you know you've gone too far. We parked our car on the side of the road in front of the sign. Take the trail to the right of the sign to begin your scenic walk to the baths.

The path takes you on a beautiful 5-10 minute walk through the jungle beside small waterfalls and streams until you reach the baths. Two of the pools are warm and the third is cool. We didn't see a washroom there, but there was a changing room. The entrance fee is 10 EDC each (~$3.75 USD), which you pay once you get to the actual springs.

Note: If you're not driving, book a driver through your hotel for a half-day to do all these activities.

Go snorkelling at Anse Chastanet beach and relax nearby at the tranquil Anse Mamin beach

going places travel near st lucia

Go snorkelling at Anse Chastanet Beach

Anse Chastanet and Anse Mamin are easily two of the most beautiful beaches on St Lucia. They are located down a very bumpy and steep single lane road with pull outs, so even if you are renting a car, we recommend hiring a private driver through your hotel instead. It cost us $50 USD roundtrip.

Anse Chastanet is the more popular beach and known to have some of the best snorkelling on the island. We rented snorkelling gear for $17 USD each per hour right at the beach. If you want to store your stuff in a locker, it's $7 USD for a key. A $50 USD cash-only deposit is required, so make sure to bring enough cash for everything. There are buoys that show you the areas to snorkel.

Hang out at Anse Mamin Beach next door

After you're done snorkelling, walk about 10 minutes up the shore to find Anse Mamin beach, a relaxed spot with less people. This was our favourite beach for chilling. It's easy to spend the day here.

Since Anse Mamin is located close to the famous Jade Mountain Resort and Anse Chastanet Resort, we were able to order some beachside bites from the server walking around. The milkshake and wings were delicious. It's expensive to rent the beach chairs and umbrellas ($66 USD for the set), but we were happy sitting on our beach blankets, since the sand was so soft.

Take a scenic road trip to explore the northern end of the island

going places travel near st lucia

Today you will take a scenic road trip to explore the northern end of St. Lucia. The drive takes about 1.75 hours from Soufriere on windy roads through the mountains and colourful villages. At the north end of the island is Gros Islet, a more commercial part of St Lucia where cruise ships dock and you find larger resorts like Sandals. Skip the touristy spots, like Pigeon Island (we found it boring compared to sights in Soufriere) and instead stop in at these two amazing peaceful spots:

Eat brunch at Pink Plantation House

About an hour drive from Soufriere is the Pink Plantation House, a former colonial mansion turned authentic Caribbean restaurant and guesthouse sitting beautifully in a tropical garden. Dining on the outdoor terrace brings gorgeous views of St. Lucia's capital city, Castries, far in the distance.

Hang out at the Naked Fisherman

going places travel near st lucia

From the Pink Plantation House, you're about a 40 minute drive away from your next destination, the Naked Fisherman. Once you drive past the crowded and touristy Gros Islet, it gets a lot quieter on the northern tip. This area doesn't feel very "local" with its private villas and golf course, however spending time at the Naked Fisherman makes it worth the visit.

The beachside bar & grill sits on a natural cove and is a gem to hang out at. It feels like a wild private beach all with the luxury of having fresh seafood and juicy BBQ bites available at anytime. We shared the tuna poke, Kobe burger and fish & chips. The food was excellent and the servers friendly. Afterwards, sway on the Bali-style swing located on the rocks, or play in the waves.

Make sure you're full before taking the road trip back to your hotel. If you're not driving, organize a private driver with your hotel for a full-day to fit in these activities.

Enjoy homemade creole cooking at Martha's Tables and have a classic beach day at Sugar Beach

going places travel near st lucia

For your last day on St Lucia, have a classic beach day between the Pitons at the beautiful white-sanded Sugar Beach . This beach may feel the most "resorty" of the bunch since it's part of the Sugar Beach Viceroy Resort, but it's relatively easy to get to and offers good amenities, like beachside service (if you don't mind paying for extras).

Enjoy homemade creole cooking at Martha's Tables for brunch

Before heading down to the beach, stop in for a casual lunch at Martha's Tables, located at the top of the hill. The colourful restaurant is known for its homemade creole cooking and is one of the best restaurants on the island for authentic local cuisine. The mac and cheese was fantastic!

Have a classic beach day at Sugar Beach

going places travel near st lucia

The catch with Sugar Beach is that if you drive there you have to pay $50 USD per person for a day pass, which includes parking and a round-trip shuttle that takes you down to the beach. On the positive side, this $50 USD day pass is a credit you can use for the restaurant or beachside service (alcohol included) .

It cannot be used for beach chairs/umbrellas however, which is an extra $50 USD per person. You could alternatively get dropped off at the top and walk down, but it's going to be a tiring journey coming back up.

You won't have an issue spending your $50 USD credit since it's very expensive at the restaurant. Save your money on water by bringing your own bottle and instead spend it on Pina Coladas. It costs $13 USD for a large bottle of water there!

Don't miss the cute store on the righthand side of the beach that sells crochet clothing.

Our Top 5 St Lucia travel tips:

  • Don't just eat in your resort/hotel  - eat at local spots for authentic Caribbean cuisine
  • Stay near Soufriere - it's one of the most beautiful parts of the island with the famous Pitons as its backdrop, it's way less touristy than the cruise-ship crowded north and has fun geothermal activities.
  • Be aware of of extra costs at beaches - some beaches charge for a day pass and most charge for beach chairs/umbrellas
  • Skip touristy sights that aren't worth the hype - instead of the Pigeon Island hike, do the Tet Nature Trail. Instead of Toraille Waterfall, do the New Jerusalem Baths.
  • Familiarize yourself with the road conditions to see if you're comfortable driving. Driving is on the lefthand side and the roads are small and windy through the mountains. If you're not comfortable, you can easily hire a private driver through your hotel.

26 Ultimate Things to Do in St. Lucia

Rosie Bell

More than 22 dive sites, two UNESCO-listed peaks, one drive-in volcano, and endless adventures above and below the water. Here are the best and most memorable things to do in St. Lucia.

Top Picks for You

going places travel near st lucia

Take a Break at Marigot Bay

Soak in the sight of one of the prettiest natural harbors in the Caribbean, just five miles south of Castries. Daysail excursions along the island’s west coast all make a side trip into Marigot Bay just because it’s so lovely. Arrive on your own to hang around Capella Marina, ogle at the beautiful sailboats and yachts, enjoy a waterside lunch, toast the sunset, or have a classy dinner. A tiny ferry takes passengers back and forth across the bay to a tiny beach, and the voyage takes a minute or so.

Indulge at a Spa

Just about every large resort in St. Lucia—even many small hotels—boast an onsite spa, but two resorts stand out from the rest. BodyHoliday , at the northern tip of the island in Cap Estate, is just that—a holiday for your body. Incredibly, a one-hour daily therapeutic treatment is included in the room rate. Then, at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort , which is perfectly positioned between The Pitons in Soufri è re, the treatment rooms in the Rainforest Spa are actually in tree houses. So, give in to your sybaritic side and treat yourself to a treatment.

Recommended Fodor’s Video

Take a dip under a waterfall.

When the mercury is high, cooling down at a wonderful waterfall is one of the best things to do in St. Lucia. A mile or so inland from Soufrière Harbor and a stone’s throw from the main road through Fond St. Jacques, Toraille Waterfall cascades over a cliff and down about 50 feet to a pool where you can take a refreshing plunge or let the falling water massage your back and shoulders. A nature trail leads through the surrounding lush tropical gardens and changing rooms are nearby. Other glorious gurgling waterfalls worthy of your island time include the intimate Anse La Raye Waterfalls and La Tille Waterfall and Gardens on the east coast.

Meander Through the Botanical Garden

Each side of every pathway that cuts through   Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens   and Mineral Baths in Soufrière bursts with tropical flowers—pink, purple, red, yellow, orange, and blue—and a staggering amount of greenery. Visiting it is one of the best things to do in St. Lucia when all you need is a little peace, quiet, and nature therapy. The gardens are part of a 2,000-acre land grant presented by French king Louis XVI in 1713. Eventually, you reach Diamond Falls, where the mineral-rich cascade has caused the underlying rock to sparkle like diamonds.

Sail Along the Coast

The most enjoyable way to get from the north to St. Lucia’s fascinating natural attractions in Soufrière is by sea. Catamaran tours   depart from Rodney Bay Marina and Capella Marina in Marigot Bay for the magnificent sail south to Soufrière Bay. The sailing excursion includes visits to the drive-in volcano, a botanical garden, and lunch at a historic plantation. No one ever tires of seeing the Pitons, so thankfully, they are always in view. There’s a snorkeling stop on the return sail and a quick pass through Marigot Bay, making this an absolute must-do in St. Lucia.

Hike in the Rainforest

St. Lucia’s rainforest covers more than 19,000 acres of the island. A strenuous hike into Edmund Forest Reserve , accessible from Fond St. Jacques just east of Soufrière, will take three or four hours, and the reward is a close-up view of exotic flowers and plants as well as distant views of mountains, valleys, and the sparkling sea. Closer to Castries, the mile-long trail through Barre de l’Isle Forest Reserve is an easy hike with similarly spectacular views. For either hike, you’ll need the permission of the Forestry Department and a guide.

Climb a Piton

The Pitons   are UNESCO-listed pyramidical twin peaks that are the iconic symbols of St. Lucia. The view from the top of Gros Piton (2,618 feet) is breathtaking, and scaling this eye-popping volcanic spire is one of the most rewarding (albeit challenging) things to do in St. Lucia. It’s more of a hike than a “climb,” but the journey is still strenuous, and it takes about two hours on average to reach the summit.

You’ll need permission from the Forestry Department and a guide who will lead you safely along the trail while explaining some local history, geology, and botany.

INSIDER TIP It is not advisable to climb Petit Piton (2,461 feet), Gros Piton’s smaller sibling. The trail is steeper, unmarked, and even dangerous in some places.

Explore the depths.

Come nose-to-nose with resplendent sea dwellers–slithery eels, tubular trumpetfish, sergeant majors, and the like–while exploring St. Lucia’s vibrant underwater world. The coastal waters around the Pitons and north to Anse Cochon are protected as Marine Reserve areas and, as such, they are excellent places for scuba divers to explore reefs, walls, and wrecks—sunken cargo ship vessel, the Lesleen M, is a prime diving playground.

There is no shortage of dive centers to facilitate your marine adventures. Dive St. Lucia, in Rodney Bay, is a state-of-the-art, purpose-built, full-service facility with classrooms, a training pool, and a pair of snazzy, 30-passenger dive boats. Several large resorts also have onsite dive shops that offer day trips, courses, and certifications.

INSIDER TIP Snorkelers find plenty to see, too, whether swimming off the beach or tagging along on a dive trip.

Jump up on friday night.

One of the most fun things to do in St. Lucia on a Friday night is attending the Gros Islet Street Party, the island’s most popular “Jump-Up”. From sunset until the wee hours, this is the place to be on Fridays when giant speakers set up on the village’s main street blast Caribbean sounds—from calypso to reggae, soca, and zouk—and much revelry ensues fuelled by ice-cold Piton beers, rum punch, and other island libations. On the side streets, villagers barbecue chicken and fish and also sell beverages. Tourists and locals alike join in the fun—and, of course, the dancing.

INSIDER TIP Don’t worry about getting back to your hotel…your taxi driver will arrange a pick-up time.

Head for the fish fry.

If you find yourself in the small fishing village of Anse La Raye, midway between Soufrière and Castries, on a Friday night, you’re just in time for “Fish Fry.” The entire main street (Front Street) is closed off to cars and lined with folks preparing grilled or stewed fish, crayfish, conch, lobsters, roasted corn, and bakes (biscuits). The DJs, live music, and your choice of beverage should keep you hopping well into the night.

Ride a Horse on the Beach

Creole horses are relatively small and sturdy—and love to trot along St. Lucia’s sandy beaches and swim in the sea. Saddle up and fulfill your beachside equestrian fantasies with Atlantic Shores Riding Stables , which offers two-hour guided trail rides to beaches on the southern coast as well as a beach and countryside trail combo. This route takes in the Atlantic coastline, a banana plantation, and magnificent mountainous terrain along the way. These trips are fun for the whole family and don’t require any previous horseback riding experience. You can also gallop along scenic trails during a private two or three-hour session with Sandy Hoofs St. Lucia .

Zip Through the Rainforest

One of the most exhilarating things to do in St. Lucia is soaring over dense tropical rainforests on a zip line. Rainforest Adventures in Babonneau will help you tap into your inner Tarzan on their Adrena-Line Canopy Tour. Those seeking a more sedate experience should opt for the aerial gondola ride. This eight-seater open-air tram is a wonderful way to experience the jungle with knowledgeable guides pinpointing the resident flora and fauna. You can also get your kicks at the Morne Coubaril Historical Adventure Park, which runs zipline canopy adventures as well as rum and chocolate-tasting tours.

Play in a Water Park

For young ones, one of the most fun things to do in St. Lucia pays a visit to Splash Island Water Park . This group of inflatable water “sports” activities particularly appeals to youngsters (over six years) and teens, although adults love it too. Just offshore on Reduit Beach in front of Bay Gardens Beach Resort, this is the Caribbean’s largest open-water sports park boasting a trampoline, climbing wall, swing, hurdles, high jump, water polo…and lifeguards.

INSIDER TIP At the southern tip of St. Lucia, the family-friendly half of Coconut Bay Beach Resort has a huge water park—activity pool, lazy river, waterfalls, and multiple water slides—all included in its all-inclusive rates.

Eat a banana (or two).

St. Lucia grows more than 100 varieties of bananas, and you’ll see endless banana fields along the roadside in Babonneau and near Marigot Bay. They often have blue plastic bags wrapped around the bunches to protect them from birds and insects. The familiar yellow fruit seems sweeter and more delicious here. You’ll see.

Practice Patois

St. Lucia is an English-speaking country, but you’ll also hear local folks speaking a Kwéyòl (Creole) among themselves. It sounds like French—but not quite. You might like to try a few phrases during your visit. For example, the morning greeting is bonjou; in the evening, bonswè. Or you might ask, Sa kafèt? (How are you?)

A favorite St. Lucian dish is bouyon (rich boiled soup with meats and root vegetables), bananas are called figs, avocados are zaboca, and to eat is manjé. Pick out Kwéyòl words on menus, notice them on signs, and practice them with people you meet. Another useful word to learn is viwé for return because most visitors to St. Lucia usually do.

Enjoy Chocolate in Various Forms

St. Lucia has a cocoa trade that dates back to the 1700s. The cacao tree and its chocolate-producing pods can be spotted throughout the island and have ultimately become embedded in the nation’s cultural fabric, so much so that an entire month is dedicated to celebrating chocolate (each August). Therefore, partaking in any form of chocolate ritual is a must-do in St. Lucia.

At the historic Morne Coubaril and Fond Doux plantations in Soufrière, you can watch cocoa pods become chocolate bars. At nearby Rabot Hotel by Hotel Chocolat, delight in creating your own chocolate bar(s) during enlightening “Tree to Bean” and “Bean to Bar” tours. Chocolate-infused gustatory thrills are also served at the hotel’s restaurant—think white chocolate dressings and cacao-marinated scallops. Also in Soufrière, Jade Mountain has its very own chocolate laboratory and a spa (Kai en Ciel) offering every kind of chocolate-based treatment imaginable from chocodara to hot chocolate candle wax massages.

Drink Fresh Coconut Water

A common thing to do in St. Lucia is purchase fresh coconut water—the ultimate thirst-quencher—from roadside Jelly Men. When driving around the countryside—on your own, in a taxi, or on a tour—you’ll likely see a “jelly man” standing on the side of the road next to heaps of green (“jelly”) coconuts with a machete in his hand. He will skillfully use the machete to cut off the top of a coconut in one quick swipe and then hand it to you with a drinking straw, and You’ll enjoy the freshest coconut water right from the source.

Bathe in a Sulphur Spring

While a “mud bath” at a spa is a rejuvenating experience for your skin (and your soul), St. Lucia offers a unique “natural” mud bath experience. Regularly billed as the world’s only “drive-in volcano,” Sulphur Springs   in Soufrière is one of the must-do things in St. Lucia . Head there to detoxify, heal, restore, tighten, and smooth your skin by taking a dip in the mineral-rich waters. Cover your body with the warm gray mud (wear an old bathing suit), wash off in the spring-fed thermal pool, and then cool off under a nearby waterfall.   While visiting this dormant volcano crater—the last eruption was in 1766—many find the sulfurous odors in the air a tad uninviting, but the overall experience is surreal.

INSIDER TIP When planning your attire for swimming, keep in mind that wearing camouflage clothing is illegal in St. Lucia. This includes children.

Ride a “dollar” bus.

Privately owned, 16-passenger vans comprise St. Lucia’s bus system—a quick, cheap, and fun way to travel a short distance—say between Castries and Rodney Bay or Rodney Bay and Cap Estate. While there are usual stops, you can hail one simply by raising your hand when you see one coming down the road. And just knock on the panel above the window when you want to get off.

INSIDER TIP The “dollar” bus now actually costs slightly more than a dollar for a short trip. You should still take one if only to enjoy the local music blasting from the driver’s radio.

Buy spices and crafts at the saturday market.

Trolling a Caribbean produce market is always fun, and though it’s open six days a week, Saturday morning is the best and liveliest time to visit Castries’ fruit and veg market. Row upon row of vendors displays their heaps of tropical fruits, vegetables, spices, and more—urging you to buy bags of spices and bottles of hot sauce to take home. Look for the bright orange roofs in downtown Castries, right across from the harbor.

INSIDER TIP Next door, at the huge craft market, you’ll find straw items and souvenirs. And across the street, even more, vendors sell their wares.

Eat saltfish and green fig.

Dried, salted codfish—soaked overnight, then boiled, crumbled, and sautéed with onions, peppers, tomatoes, and spices before adding boiled unripe bananas, known as “green figs” in St. Lucia—is the island’s national dish. Considered a Sunday dish for home cooks, local restaurants often feature it on their menus—even for breakfast.

Tee off at Cap Estate

St. Lucia has only one 18-hole championship golf course, the St. Lucia Golf & Country Club on the far north of the island at Cap Estate. Golfers enjoy magnificent views of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea when playing the 6,744-yard, par 71 course.

INSIDER TIP Several nearby resorts offer preferred tee times and complimentary transportation to their guests.

Watch the sunset between the pitons.

Perched on the ridge between The Pitons, Ladera Resort offers the most striking landside view of the two peaks—Gros Piton and Petit Piton—and the valley between. While a glorious view during the day, watching the sunset between the peaks is downright enchanting. Come for cocktails on the resort’s deck and stay for dinner at its restaurant, Dasheene.

Charter a Boat

Is a sun-soaked journey sailing the Caribbean seas on your bucket list? You can charter a sailboat—catamaran or monohull—or even a powerboat by the afternoon, day, week, or longer, with or without a crew. Cruise along St. Lucia’s magnificent coast and into its inviting bays and coves—or sail through the nearby Grenadines and on to Grenada, one-way or round-trip.

Rodney Bay and Marigot Bay are the island’s yachting centers. There, you’ll find charter companies like Jus’ Sail and Moorings Inc.

INSIDER TIP Moorings Inc. has facilities on both St. Lucia and Grenada, so you can charter a boat at one island and drop it off at the other.

Enjoy 360-degree hilltop views.

Immerse yourself in St. Lucia’s history by venturing out to Pigeon Island National Park. Connected to the mainland by a causeway, this 44-acre park has military ruins, beaches, and a hilltop lookout, Fort Rodney. There are superb 360-degree views to be had from the fort and a small museum stores actual relics from military battles. When France and Britain wrestled for control of St Lucia—which they did for centuries—the park was used as a military base and lookout point. It also played a role during World War II when Fort Rodney became a U.S. Signal Station. Today it’s a landmark where travelers can picnic, swim at pristine beaches and learn about the islet via informational signs dotted all around.

Find Beach Bliss on Golden Sands

Beach hopping is, naturally, one of the top things to do in St. Lucia. The island is blessed with strands that could inspire a thousand Instagram stories—many of which are golden. Better still, St. Lucia beaches   are public, including the ones located in resorts.

Plop a towel on the sand at Reduit Beach (the most popular on the whole island), Anse de Pitons (an incredibly located beach with white sand imported from Guyana), Anse Cochon (a snorkeling goldmine), Anse de Sables (popular with kite surfers and windsurfers), or Labas Beach, a picture-perfect sliver of sand that juts into Marigot Bay.

Updated on September 21st, 2023

After spending a month on stunning St Lucia, I had the chance to sample a lot of the best that the island has to offer. Here is my pick of over 30 sights and activities to add to your St Lucia itinerary for an unforgettable island experience.”

St Lucia, West Indies

I spent a lot of time over the last few years becoming better acquainted with the Caribbean . I love it. So, after being stuck at home for a while it was an obvious place to spread my wings and regain my freedom. I chose to spend 2 months getting to know two new stunning islands: St Lucia and Grenada .

Over 30 Epic Activities for your Perfect St Lucia Itinerary

During my month in St Lucia, I explored extensively. I stayed in the north, south, east and west of the island and drove through the middle. On that note, I wrote a whole blog post with tips on tackling the roads on the island .

Over 30 Epic Activities for your Perfect St Lucia Itinerary

I did a thorough research project on all the main beaches and a few more besides! I snorkelled its waters and hurtled through the skies in its rainforests. In addition, I hiked up to viewpoints, soaked in hot volcanic waters and explored historic monuments. I drank a lot of its rum, enjoyed many of its seafood specialities and even created my own chocolate bar.

Unfortunately, I also had one of my most distressing travel experiences when I was broken into while I was asleep. You can read all about the incident here , as well as all the lessons I learnt as a result. However, it didn’t put me off enjoying everything that stunning St Lucia has to offer. I made a lot of friends, especially among the locals and asked everyone for their recommendations.

As a result of all this, if you are looking for your perfect St Lucia itinerary, then look no further!

If Grenada is also on your list, don’t miss my ultimate guide to the island HERE .

What is the best time of year to visit St Lucia?

Over 30 Epic Activities for your Perfect St Lucia Itinerary

Between February and May is the best time to visit St Lucia as they are the driest months. I was there in March and again in April and although it rained on a few days, it was generally hot and sunny. The temperatures are warm all year (28 0 C – 32 0 C), although the higher you go, the cooler it gets.

June to January tend to be wetter and advice generally when visiting the Caribbean is to avoid the hurricane season which officially runs from July to November.”

Where to stay in St Lucia

No matter what your budget and accommodation style, there is a lot of choice in St Lucia. I prefer staying in locally owned places rather than big chain hotels. On this visit, I also chose mostly self-catering to keep the costs down.

Be aware that most international flights will arrive at Hewanorra Airport which is located in the south. Transport can be expensive to get to and from the airport so bear this in mind when you are deciding on where to stay. Here are a few options to give you an idea of the prices of transfers from Vieux Fort in St Lucia:

I started in Rodney Bay where I eventually stayed in 2 properties, both within an easy walk to Reduit Beach. The first was the excellent Coco Palm which I would thoroughly recommend. It seemed to cater more for the independent-spirited traveller. In addition, check out Bay Gardens Hotel .  It’s not on the beach (15-20 minute walk) but has a shuttle to its sister hotel ( Bay Gardens Beach Resort ) where you can use all the facilities and sunbeds for free. For real luxury, I heard that Windjammer  in Gros Islet is one of the best resorts on the island.

If you would prefer to stay closer to the Pitons and want to treat yourself, the  Viceroy Resort  on Sugar Beach is a fantastic location. And on the other side of Soufriere, also with amazing views is  Anse Chastanet  and it’s even more exclusive sister property Jade Mountain . If you are looking for something in a more budget price range, with self-catering facilities, then I enjoyed my stays at both Frenz  and Diamondview Apartments in Soufriere.

Between the two, on the Caribbean west coast is the  Ti Kaye Resort  at gorgeous Anse Cochon Beach. However, I went for a more budget, self-catering option in  Eden Crest Villas which offered a secluded spot, with a pool and a magnificent view. In Marigot Bay I treated myself to a couple of nights at the  Beach Club and Dive Resort . The view from the balcony was well worth the extra money I paid! I also only took enough luggage for a couple of days which made negotiating the free ferry and steps to my room much easier. Other options are the  Oasis Marigot , or the super-exclusive  Marigot Bay  (no ferry required).

Finally, the road less travelled is the wild Atlantic east coast. A stay here gives you a very different St. Lucian experience. I explored it for a few nights at the lovely Zamaca . It’s owned by Ellen and John who are exceptional hosts.

Ellen prides herself on breakfast and it was without doubt the best I had on the island. If you can, also ask if she will cook dinner for you one night. It was truly delicious!”

Head to the beach

I wrote a whole blog post on the best beaches in St Lucia which you can read all about HERE .

Over 30 Epic Activities for your Perfect St Lucia Itinerary

Reduit Beach is the most popular on the island and the jewel of the north. For stunning views of the Pitons then it’s hard to beat Sugar Beach or Anse Chastanet . They also top the list for the best snorkelling on the island, along with Anse Cochon . When you’re at Anse Chasanet, don’t miss the short walk to Anse Mamin for a much wider, picturesque stretch of sand. Although there are no views of the magnificent Pitons, it was one of my favourite places on the island to park my towel!

However, there are a few lesser-known and more local beaches which you may also want to explore. Hummingbird Beach (known by the locals as Cemetary Beach) is worth a visit if you have some time to spare in Soufriere. It is not as pristine as some of the more tourist beaches, but the views of the Pitons are exceptional. If you’re feeling daring, you can also ask one of the local guys to show you the way and join them in jumping off the cliffs!

Laborie Beach was also recommended to me. Although I didn’t go for a swim here, the water looked stunning. There is a reef which protects the beach and makes it a perfect swimming spot.

Go for a hike

Over 30 Epic Activities for your Perfect St Lucia Itinerary

There are plenty of places to lace up your boots and add hiking to your St Lucia itinerary. The big one is Gros Piton but prepare for a hard hike. It takes around 2 hours each way. Ideally, you will go with a guide, but the path is well-marked so it is possible to tackle it alone. A certain level of fitness is required and prepare for some rock scrambling. The other two big peaks on the island ( Petit Piton and Mount Gimie ) both require some rock climbing prowess so you definitely need a guide for both.

Tet Paul Nature Trail was actually my favourite thing to do on the island. It is an easy hike, but you need a guide as the project is run by the community and all the funds go back into maintenance.

With landmarks like the “Stairway to Heaven” and “Valley of Paradise”, it’s hard not to be in awe of the views. Here you can admire both the Pitons and Sugar Beach all in one spectacular panorama.”

If you need more convincing, check out my video below. It also contains some important information on finding your way there. Not as easy as you would think!

A blonde woman and a young man leaning against a wooden fence over looking a distant bay and large pointed mountain with a white text overlay and large red youtube button

In the north, don’t miss the chance to explore Pigeon Island. This one is perfect to introduce you to more about the history of St Lucia and the tussles between the British and French in the region. The national park spans 44 acres and you can climb up to Fort Rodney for beautiful views and ominous cannons. Then there is the higher peak of Signal Hill. This involves a little bit of rock scrambling but on a clear day, you may even get a view of Martinique.

There are also numerous hikes you can do to discover the rainforest, wildlife and waterfalls of the island.

Feel the heat of the earth

This island lays claim to be the only drive-in volcano in the world so, it’s hard not to add this to your St Lucia itinerary. My advice is to head there later in the day to avoid the crowds. Seeing the earth bubbling will never be something I can get my head around. If it fascinates you too then check out my adventures on the Golden Circle and Myvatn areas in Iceland.

In St Lucia you can get a tour to the bubbling earth to learn all about its volcanic origins. Then smother yourself in the mineral rich mud while you bathe in the naturally heated pools. Now that’s an experience most of us don’t have every day!”

And if bathing in volcanically heated pools is your thing, then also don’t miss the chance to soak at Piton Falls . A short walk down the steps brings you to a waterfall and geothermally heated pools. It’s well worth a visit, especially if you’re heading to Sugar Beach as it’s just off the road to get there.

If this appeals to you then also on your St Lucia itinerary should be a soak in the mineral baths that once relieved the joints of Napoleons’ Josephine. They date from 1784 when they were built as a therapeutic soak for the troops of King Louis XVI of France. Take a wander around the Botanical Gardens in Soufriere and add a dip in the pools to your entrance ticket.

A blonde woman sitting up to her shoulders in Bubbling hot water pools carved out of a hillside with a large white text and red button overlay

Take the plunge at a waterfall

No trip to the Botanical Gardens would be complete without a visit to Diamond Falls , one of the most picturesque waterfalls in St Lucia. And if you love a waterfall as much as I do, there are a few more to add into your St Lucia itinerary too. Toraille Falls is another which is close to the Botanical Gardens. I loved Latille Falls on the East Coast, made even more special by the fact that I had it all to myself. Close by is Sault Falls although it was well hidden and I failed to find it with the directions I was given. Hopefully, you will have more luck!

Mess about on the water

Over 30 Epic Activities for your Perfect St Lucia Itinerary

One of the must-do activities on St Lucia is to take a boat tour around the island and there are several options to see this spectacular location from the water. You can choose between a larger catamaran or a smaller boat for a more intimate experience. If you fancy getting a little more hands-on, Marigot Bay is the perfect, sheltered location to take your choice of smaller vessel onto the water. It is a very picturesque and unique part of the island.

If you want to get under the water, then there are some beautiful spots to go snorkelling on the island. Check out my full summary of the best places to snorkel and what you can see HERE . Alternatively, why not try your hand at snuba ? Snuba is a cross between snorkelling and scuba. You breathe through a regulator while your tank of air floats on the surface above you. On Pigeon Island, you don a huge helmet and walk along the surface while watching the underwater world around you.

I enjoyed seeing the helmets lined up on the seabed. Then a snuba man literally walked into me and I had to try and avoid getting tangled in his pipes!”

For gastronomes and party people

One of the must-do activities for your St Lucia itinerary, if you’re a chocoholic, is to head over to Hotel Chocolat. Not only can you stay at the Rabot Hotel from Hotel Chocolat, but you could opt for a meal where every course is created using the cocoa bean as an ingredient. I didn’t partake but everyone I spoke to said it was excellent. What I did do, however, was to take a tour of the cocoa plantation here and even got to make my very own chocolate bar. Check out my blog post for everything you need to know if this appeals to you too.

A Caribbean wooden shack with painted colourful signs on the walls

Fridays are party nights on St Lucia. If you would like a bit of a carnival atmosphere with your dinner, then on a Friday night head over to the Anse La Raye Fish Fry. Unfortunately, it wasn’t running when I was there as they were on the tail end of COVID restrictions, but it’s on my list for next time. If you don’t fancy the joys of fish fry (or have more than one Friday to party) then the Gros Islet Jump Up  may be more your cup of tea, or should I say rum cocktail!

Here, they close the street, crank up the music, pour the rum and everyone has a big party. I missed this too, it started again just after I left!”

If rum is your thing (and it should be for any visit to the Caribbean!), then don’t miss the chance for a tour and a tasting at the St Lucia Distillers . Finally, if you are interested in discovering more of the local produce, head to Castries market  where you can also stock up on souvenirs.

Take to the skies

There are various places around St Lucia to get your adrenaline glands pumping via a zipline tour . I chose to visit Rainforest Adventures where they have 8 ziplines in total. It’s a great fun way to explore the rainforest. However, if you are looking for something a little slower-paced, they also have an aerial tram which will give you more education about the forest itself and the various species of flora and fauna on the island.

So, there ends my epic rundown of sights and activities to add to your St Lucia itinerary. I hope it helps you to curate your perfect trip to this beautiful island. And I hope you love your time there as much as I did!

I am moving to Mexico pretty soon and I am excited to learn about new places that I can visit in The Caribbean. Definitely on my list of future trips, can’t wait to d some snuba!

Thank you Patricia & really pleased to add St Lucia to your map. Lots to come on Grenada too which I would recommend! Good luck with your move & safe travels. Sue

Looks like you had fun trying all 30+ suggestions! Great options, and I kind of wish I had this list when I visited St Lucia. I did the mountain biking in the “jungle”, snorkeling at Anse Chastanet, boat tour to see Piton and lunch at Hotel Chocolate. But what I really would have liked to do from your list is the sulfur springs and mud bath, see the Piton waterfall.

Thank you Renee & I wish I’d done a few of the things you did too! But the mud baths are pretty unique. Hopefully next time? Sue

A month on St Lucia would suit me too! I don’t think I would get bored at all with more than 30 things to do or see. Beaches, ziplining, snorkeling, hiking, I could carry on and on… Great tips and ideas, Sue!

Thank you Alma! I hope you get to enjoy them all in the future too! Sue x

We have been to St Lucia several times. But it is clear we need to go back and enjoy more of the epic activities. We have spent no time in the north so it would definitely bear some beach time. And we have missed visiting the waterfalls. But you know we spent lots of time underwater.

Thank you Linda & I woukd definitely recommend some time in the north on your next trip. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Sue x

I have enjoyed all your Caribbean posts. We will return to a handful of islands next spring, some new and some repeats. Looking forward to it once again.

Thank you Laureen & glad you’ve enjoyed my posts. I look forward to reading all about your Spring adventures too. Sue x

Wow a month on St. Lucia sounds like a dream! I love that there are so many things to do, too. I am so sorry you were broken into while you were asleep, but I am so glad you are ok and still kept a great attitude!

Thank you Alexandra for your comments & hope you get to sample your St Lucia dream some time in the future too!

What a lovely looking place. I am all for anything chocolate related so making your own chocolate bar and a cocoa bean inspired menu sound fantastic. The mineral bath looks fun too, very relaxing

Thank you Emma…& I’m with you on the chocolate front 😉 Sue x

Wow, you had a blast in St Lucia! I have never been but would love to explore someday. I love that you did all these 30+ activities in a month, just like one daily activity! I will not have the same amount of days but would love to do as much as possible!

Thank you Mayi & I was very spoilt for a month. I hope you get chance to sample a few of these someday when you get to St Lucia too. Sue x

We Will be in St Lucia just during our 8 hour Cruise stop. Ive been reading your guide but I would really like to know what you would do if you had 8 hours to visit It. Tet Paul hike, Anse Chastanet and Sugar beach are a must for us. Would you include the mud baths, a beach or village in the north, waterfalls (and which ones)?. Thanks a lot

Hi Maria & I’m really pleased to hear that you found my post useful. I think it would depend on what you enjoy most. The 3 places you are already planning are in the southern part of the island, around Soufriere so I would stick to the area there. Although St Lucia is small, driving can be challenging with potholes, small roads & a lot of corners. This means that getting around the island takes much longer than you expect. As such I would choose the mud baths & maybe Piton Falls & if you’re going to Anse CHasenet then take the path down to Anse Mamin. Snorkeling in Anse CHasenet or Suf=gar Beach is also well worth your time. I hope that helps & have a fab time in St Lucia.

16 Best Things to Do in St. Lucia

Much of St. Lucia's activity happens on the west coast and, specifically, in the Soufrière area. That's where you'll find the iconic  Pitons that visitors like to climb, as well as Sulphur Springs , a pungent drive-in volcano where

The Pitons The Pitons

Rising tall from the sea and covered in emerald-colored vegetation, these volcanic plugs (or land formations made out of volcanic materials) are the most iconic sight in all of St. Lucia. Situated between the towns of Soufrière and Choiseul, Gros Piton and its smaller sibling, Petit Piton, are easy to spot from many points in the southwest.

Travelers frequently gush about just how perfect the fraternal twin peaks are to gaze at or hike through. Those who took the hike loved the beauty of the trails and said the views at the top were breathtaking, with some describing their experience as unforgettable. Despite there being two peaks available for climbing, locals caution against hiking Petit Piton unless you are a pro climber, as the trail is incredibly steep. Though it is still a strenuous venture, many visitors choose to hike Gros Piton. Travelers who considered themselves to be in good shape reported struggling thanks to the uneven rocks, but said the sense of accomplishment in completing the hike was worth the journey. Whatever time of day you venture out, remember this is the humid, hot Caribbean, so bring plenty of drinking water. For reference, guides advise carrying no less than 1.5 liters on the hike. You'll also want to set aside about four to five hours to make the trek.

Situated on the west side of the island, Morne Coubaril Historical Adventure Park is a working plantation dating back to the 18th century with an estate house, zip lining, hiking and more. Today, the plantation produces cocoa beans, coffee, copra (the dried, white flesh of coconuts) and various tropical fruits.

Pigeon Island National Landmark Pigeon Island National Landmark

Pigeon Island appeals to an eclectic mix of travelers. You could get a history lesson about the landmark's previous occupants (including a pirate with a wooden leg) or learn more about the development of the causeway that currently connects the island to the mainland. You could also attend a concert (this is the site of the annual St. Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival) or explore 18th-century military ruins, including Fort Rodney, which affords panoramic views of the ocean and Rodney Bay . There are two beaches and a few restaurants situated within the 44-acre national landmark, as well.

Recent travelers highly recommended a trip to Pigeon Island. Many were fascinated by the history of the area and appreciated the informational signs posted throughout. Others raved about Fort Rodney, saying the views at the end of the hike were well worth the reportedly strenuous climb. There are also some uncrowded beaches, which many visitors enjoyed. Travelers recommend going early in the morning to feel like you have the whole island to yourself.

Tet Paul Nature Trail Tet Paul Nature Trail

Nicknamed the "stairway to heaven," Tet Paul Nature Trail is the place to go for scenic views, a dose of history and a workout all in one. Located on the southwest side of St. Lucia near Soufriere, the trail offers guided 45-minute tours visiting noteworthy sites like a traditional house that shows how St. Lucians used to live, a working organic farm and a picnic area. Expect to see plenty of foliage along your way, as well as views of Gros Piton, Jalousie Bay, Maria Island and more.

Recent travelers had tons of praise for this hiking trail, highlighting the fantastic views of the Pitons and the friendly, knowledgeable tour guides. Most felt that the hike was easy enough for an inexperienced trekker, though some pointed out it was a bit steep at times. The Tet Paul Nature Trail website describes the path as "easy to moderate," and manageable for families.

Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens & Mineral Baths Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens & Mineral Baths

If you're tired of lounging on the beach but not up for a hike through The Pitons , then whiling away a few hours at Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens & Mineral Baths is sure to be a relaxing – and eye-catching – compromise. This 6-acre attraction is filled to the brim with vibrant foliage, including hibiscus, ixora and heliconia, to name a few. The Diamond Waterfall is also a feast for the eyes, changing colors throughout the year due to the mixture of rainwater and volcanic minerals that flows down the falls. You can also take a relaxing dip in the on-site mineral baths.

Recent visitors enjoyed their time at Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens, saying the flowers and plants on display were beautiful, providing a refreshing view for a walk. Travelers also appreciated the low entrance fee, as well as the placards with information about the plants on display. Others recommended exploring the site on your own, despite offers from "guides" at the entrance offering paid tours.

Toraille Waterfall Toraille Waterfall

If you're looking for an easy-to-access waterfall with photo-worthy views, head to Toraille Waterfall. One of St. Lucia's most popular falls, Toraille is located just outside of Soufriere. The waterfall stands 50 feet tall and features a swimmable watering hole at the bottom, where travelers can pose for a quick picture or video.

Past visitors said the waterfall was picturesque and appreciated the on-site bathrooms and changing rooms. However, they noted you shouldn't expect to spend much time here – it is more of a photo opportunity than a time-consuming attraction. To avoid crowds, some vacationers recommended visiting on your own versus seeing the falls as part of a tour, and others noted to opt for days when cruise ships are not in port.

Anse Mamin Anse Mamin free

Connected to Anse Chastanet by a coastal path, Anse Mamin Beach provides a more secluded, romantic atmosphere than more crowded beaches on the island – perfect for a quiet, relaxing beach excursion. Vacationers can lay out on the warm sand and wade into the calm surf, or strap on some snorkeling gear to see plenty of fish and other sea life.

Then, for some adventure, head into the dense tropical foliage directly behind the beach to explore the Anse Mamin Plantation. Dating back to the 18th century, the ruins of this French Colonial site can be explored on your own or on a guided tour. There are also a number of jungle trails perfect for hiking and biking. When hunger strikes, head back to the beach to grab a drink and a bite to eat at the Jungle Beach Bar & Grill. Travelers can also rent beach chairs and umbrellas through the Anse Chastanet and Jade Mountain resorts (for a fee).

The Castries Market has been the capital city's local food and flea market for the last century. Open every day except for Sunday, locals gather to sell homegrown produce and spices as well as St. Lucia-stamped souvenirs for tourists.

The Castries has been a hit or miss for travelers. Some recent visitors were delighted by their experiences and enjoyed interacting with local vendors to buy unique items, such as fresh coconut and handcrafted woodworks. However, other visitors said some aggressive vendors they encountered hindered their ability to fully enjoy the market. Most travelers agreed though that there isn't a lot of diversity in the market, as many of the vendors, especially those in the craft market, sell much of the same items.

Anse Chastanet Anse Chastanet free

Arguably the best beach on St. Lucia for snorkeling and diving, picturesque Anse Chastanet is a more peaceful alternative to the sands of  Reduit Beach . If you're indecisive about lodging, you should consider the  nearby resort of the same name . Recent guests appreciated its attentive staff and unspoiled views of the water. Even if you don't stay at the nearby resort, you can still use its on-site restaurant and dive shop, or visit its on-site bar.

Visitors who ventured to Anse Chastanet for snorkeling said they were impressed by the clear water and were delighted by the abundance of sea life so close to the shore. However, some travelers were disappointed with the inflated food and drink prices and the conditions of the access road, which some described as difficult to navigate (though many arrived by boat via a snorkeling excursion).

Marigot Bay Marigot Bay free

There's a reason Hollywood comes calling to Marigot Bay (scenes from the original "Doctor Doolittle," starring Rex Harrison and "Firepower," starring Sophia Loren, were shot here). It's because this gorgeous shore, just south of Castries along the central western coast, is idyllic Caribbean: complete with swaying palm trees, anchored boats, and white sand beaches. Visitors describe Marigot as romantic and it's true that it's more blissfully quiet than jumping  Reduit  – making for a great escape.

Recent visitors' experiences varied by how close they got to the bay. Those who saw Marigot Bay from the surrounding hills were in awe of its beauty, while others on the ground had different impressions. A handful of travelers were disappointed by the lack of beach space and quickly grew bored with the few restaurants and shops in the area, saying if you don't have a boat docked or aren't staying at a nearby resort, there's not much to do.

Rodney Bay Rodney Bay free

While Rodney Bay encompasses a neighborhood in itself – it is home to attractions like Reduit Beach , Pigeon Island National Park and more – it also is a literal bay where travelers can sunbathe, swim, snorkel, kitesurf and more. Recent travelers loved the soft white sand and clear water at Rodney Beach, and those traveling by cruise ship noted it is fairly easy to get to from St. Lucia's cruise terminal. (This also means that the beach can fill up with cruisers when ships are in port, so consider visiting early or late in the day, or on non-ship days, to avoid crowds.)

The Rodney Bay area is also home to the Rodney Bay Marina, which offers plenty of restaurants and shopping venues, in addition to a full-service marina where sailors can dock their boats. Recent visitors loved seeing the variety of sailboats and yachts on the water, as well as the waterfront bars and eateries, quaint shops and open-air decks. Highlights include Buzz Seafood & Grill, which serves up fresh seafood and cocktails; Spice of India; and the gelato at Elena's Cafe.

Reduit Beach Reduit Beach free

St. Lucia beaches are a dime a dozen, but none are quite as loved (by travelers and locals alike) as Reduit. The expansive shoreline, glorious sunsets and close proximity to the bars, restaurants and shops of Rodney Bay make for an easygoing beach experience. Adjacent to the Rodney Bay Marina, Reduit is also a great place to try water sports like windsurfing and water-skiing. However, some honeymooners or other travelers looking for a romantic rendezvous may find the beach too loud and crowded for their taste.

Recent visitors loved Reduit Beach's cleanliness, white sands and clear water. The most common gripe among travelers was the daily onslaught of cruise ship crowds; visit in the morning or evening to avoid the afternoon rush. Some travelers also complained of pushy vendors that stroll the shore, adding that a respectful decline can go a long way.

Sulphur Springs Sulphur Springs

Sulphur Springs is billed as having the Caribbean's "only drive-in volcano," meaning that visitors are able to safely drive right by an active volcano. Located in the western town of Soufrière, the volcano emits sulfuric steam rather than lava, so remember to hold your nose to protect yourself from the overpowering rotten egg smell. The attraction also features warm sulfuric pools that visitors can bathe in.

Recent travelers offered mixed reviews about Sulphur Springs. Some were fascinated by the volcano and its geological history, while others were bored that it only emitted steam. The majority of visitors, however, loved the sulfuric pools, saying it left their skin feeling very smooth and that the staff and guides are excellent. For those interested in visiting the pools, past vacationers recommend getting to the attraction early to avoid tour groups and bringing a bathing suit you don't mind getting ruined.

Travelers looking for some one-of-a-kind nightlife should plan on getting down at the Gros Islet street party. Hosted every Friday night (with the exception of Good Friday), this popular "jump-up" has been a weekly fixture in the village of Gros Islet on the northern end of the island for more than 50 years. It takes place near Rodney Bay and hotels like Harbor Club St. Lucia, Curio Collection by Hilton and The Landings St. Lucia . Locals and tourists alike hit the streets to enjoy fresh grilled fish, pork and chicken; alcoholic drinks, including rum punch and local Piton beer; loud DJ music; local art vendors and even street performers spinning batons of fire.

Many recent vacationers had tons of fun at the Gros Islet street party, highlighting the electric energy, friendly locals, delicious food and strong drinks. Most arranged transportation via a taxi service or through their hotel concierge. However, other travelers noted that if you aren't comfortable in a rowdy party environment, this may not be the right activity for you. Additionally, some advised against bringing children.

Chocolate Tour Chocolate Tour

St. Lucia has a rich history in chocolate dating back to the 1700s. The island offers prime conditions for cacao tree growth and has exported cacao beans to chocolate-lover destinations like Hershey, Pennsylvania, and countries throughout Europe. In recent years, it has become a hot spot for "chocolate tourism," and there are a number of unique ways to celebrate (and indulge in) this sweet treat.

One of the most popular options is taking a chocolate tour. Plantations like Morne Coubaril Estate and La Dauphine Estate offer tours detailing the production of chocolate from bean to bar, while renowned Jade Mountain Resort offers its own tour through its "Chocolate Laboratory." You can also become a chocolatier yourself at Hotel Chocolat at Rabot Estate, which takes you through a hands-on chocolate-making process. Some tours add in perks like rum tastings or jewelry shopping.

Recent visitors said they had tons of fun and felt safe on the equipment; all participants are required to wear life vests, and there are certified lifeguards on site. Others noted that the staff are friendly and upbeat, and that the park provides quite a workout.

Q: What are some of the best places to visit in St. Lucia?

St. Lucia is probably best known for its beautiful beaches. Reduit Beach, located right near the lively town of Rodney Bay , is a favorite among both tourists and locals for its clear waters and white sand. Anse Chastanet is perfect for divers and snorkelers looking to spot some of the local marine life. Beyond the beach, St. Lucia is perfect for hikers and those who love adventure travel . Hike the above-mentioned Pitons for incredible views of the island, then chill out in the mineral water baths of Sulphur Springs Park .

Moreover, the Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens show off the diverse flora of the islands as well as the gorgeous Diamond Falls waterfall.

And check out the Mourne Coubaril Estate , where you can fly over coconut trees and lakes on a zipline!

Bonus: St. Lucia is also home to some of the best Caribbean wellness resorts !

Q: Is St. Lucia safe to visit?

St. Lucia is considered quite safe for visitors. Crime is pretty low and the St. Lucia authority works with the local tourism industry to keep resort and hotel areas safe. Petty crimes like pickpocketing, theft, and automobile break-ins do still occur, so always be aware of your surroundings and don’t leave valuables unattended in public to avoid pickpockets .

If you are renting a car, be sure to lock it and keep any personal items out of view. And of course, avoid walking around alone at night, whether you’re in town or on the beach.

Q: What do I need to know before going to St. Lucia?

There are a few things to know before heading to St. Lucia. First of all, there aren’t many ATMs on the island and some have trouble connecting to banks outside of the country. Bring some cash with you and exchange it for Eastern Caribbean dollars upon arrival. Most businesses do accept U.S. dollars but some may charge extra if you pay in foreign currency.

Along these lines, most restaurants and hotels automatically add a 10% service charge onto your bill. You can certainly tip extra if you’d like, but know that it’s not required.

All beaches on St. Lucia are public, so you are more or less free to visit whatever beach you’d like. If you’re visiting a beach at a resort, though, you may not be able to use their facilities, like the bathroom or beach chairs. Bring your own chair and towel just to be safe.

Finally, St. Lucia does not adhere to Daylight Savings Time. This means that they are UTC -4 year round. Keep this in mind if you are visiting the country between November and March.

Q: Do I need a visa to visit St. Lucia?

Citizens of the United States, Canada, the European Union, and many other countries do not require a visa to visit St. Lucia. You will need to show proof of your return ticket, accommodations, and ability to cover travel costs upon entry. St. Lucia requires citizens of several other countries to obtain a visa before entering the country.

It’s recommended to view your country’s St. Lucia International Travel Information page for the most up-to-date information on entry and exit requirements. You can also contact the Consulate General Of St. Lucia In New York.

Q: What is the best month to travel to St. Lucia?

The best time to visit St. Lucia is at the end of the dry season, from mid-May to late June. The weather is still very pleasant during this time as it is out of the hurricane season. Winter and early spring are also great weather-wise but tend to be busier and more expensive on the island.

Q: Are credit cards accepted in St. Lucia?

While large hotels, resorts, restaurants, and attractions often accept credit cards, small establishments in St. Lucia rarely do. For this reason, it’s wise to always have some cash on hand.

Q: What is St. Lucia’s international airport?

The main airport serving St. Lucia is Hewanorra International Airport at Vieux Fort (UVF), located on the southern end of the island. Keep in mind, this means that depending on where you are staying it can sometimes take a lot of time to get to your hotel from the airport.

Q: What is the local currency in St. Lucia?

The local currency in St. Lucia is the Eastern Caribbean dollar.

Additionally, the time of year you travel will have a significant impact on the price, with the winter months being the most expensive.

22. What type of accommodations can I find in St Lucia?

In St Lucia, you can choose from a variety of accommodations, such as Airbnb, private rentals, guesthouses, all-inclusive hotels, and resorts.

Unfortunately, there are no hostels available on the island, so budget travelers will have to try and find a cheaper Airbnb. My favorites are the all-inclusive resorts , they have a large selection of pools, bars, and restaurants on-site.

23. What are the best beach resorts in Saint Lucia?

going places travel near st lucia

When it comes to finding the best beach resorts in Saint Lucia, there are a few great options to consider:

  • Sandals Grande St. Lucian Resort is a great choice for couples looking for a luxury, adult-only experience with stunning views of the Caribbean Sea.
  • For a secluded mountaintop resort in the southwestern part of the island, check out Jade Mountain Resort . This beautiful property offers stunning views of the iconic Piton mountain peaks.
  • For a family-friendly option, Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa is an all-inclusive resort located along the island’s southeastern Atlantic coast, offering plenty of on-property activities.
  • Finally, for an ultra-luxurious experience, Sugar Beach is located right between the Pitons and on a lovely white-sand beach. With chic, minimalistic rooms and villas, plus butlers and 24-hour room service, it’s an excellent choice for those looking for an unforgettable stay.

24. How can I find budget accommodation in Saint Lucia?

I’ll be honest, Saint Lucia is not known for budget traveling or backpackers paradise. There are no hostels or other low-cost accommodations. But the time you visit will have the biggest influence on the prices. For the best value, visit Saint Lucia during the off-season, which is from May to November.

Your best bet will be to find private rooms on Airbnb. These can start as low as $30 USD and usually max out at around $70 USD per night. Book your accommodation way in advance to secure the best prices and the room of your choice.

Safety Tips

25. is saint lucia safe.

going places travel near st lucia

Yes, Saint Lucia is generally a safe place to visit. Thanks to the St. Lucia authority partnering with the local tourism industry, resort and hotel areas remain secure. While petty crimes like pickpocketing, theft and automobile break-ins do still occur, you can mitigate the risk by remaining aware of your surroundings and not leaving valuables unattended in public.

When renting a car, it is important to lock it and keep any personal items out of view. And avoid walking around alone at night, both in town and on the beach.

26. How do I prepare for a trip to Saint Lucia?

When preparing for your trip to Saint Lucia, you should take the following steps:

  • Plan Your Trip’s Itinerary: Take the time to plan out what you want to do and see while on vacation in Saint Lucia. Having a plan in place ensures that you can see and do the things you want, and it will also make packing for your trip much easier.
  • Make Copies of Important Documents: Before traveling, make photocopies of documents such as your ID, passport, and receipt for prepaid services in case of any misfortunes. Keep pictures of your important documents on your phone and also email them to yourself for extra peace of mind.
  • Notify Financial Institutions of Your Travel Plans: Be sure to notify your bank, credit card companies, and other financial institutions of your travels. This will prevent your accounts from being put on hold when international charges appear.
  • Pack Efficiently: Try to take only the essentials with you on your trip. Rolling your clothes tightly instead of folding them will save you valuable space and reduce deep creases. Keep any essential items such as ID, passport, any paperwork, money, credit cards, traveler’s checks, contact information, and medication on your person at all times, or stow them in the hotel safe.
  • Activate International Data on Your Phone: Most carriers these days offer add-ons for international travel but only use roaming only for emergencies. If you need access to the internet outside your hotel, buy a local sim card with internet access.
  • Notify Family and Friends of Your Plans: Let at least two people know your exact plans, flight info, and resort name, just in case. Check in daily or every other day and let your loved ones know you are ok.

27. What is the legal drinking age in St Lucia?

going places travel near st lucia

The legal drinking age in St Lucia is 18. They don’t really check your ID that often unless you look very young.

28. How is the medical system in Saint Lucia?

The medical system in Saint Lucia is very good. For minor injuries, you can get some supplies from a local farmacy, like disinfectant and bandaids. It’s always good to have some on hand when exploring around.

For more serious problems, there are two public hospitals, Victoria Hospital in Castries and St. Jude Hospital in Vieux-Fort, and one private hospital, Tampion Hospital, near Castries. It is important that you get travel insurance that includes coverage for emergency medical care when traveling to Saint Lucia.

29. Are there any scams in St Lucia?

There are a few scams in St Lucia, but they are rare. It is important to use common sense when taking taxis, tours, and engaging with strangers on the street. It is also wise to keep your belongings secure and out of reach to avoid theft.

Solo female travelers should feel safe but should take the proper precautions, such as not leaving drinks unattended and not walking home alone while intoxicated.

30. What are the things NOT to do in Saint Lucia?

We often think of things to do on our vacation, but we also have to consider the don’ts:

  • Don’t dress inappropriately, Saint Lucia is a conservative island.
  • Don’t venture into unknown territory alone, stick to the tourist areas.
  • Don’t pet the stray animals.
  • Don’t carry obscene amounts of cash, especially in crowded areas.
  • Don’t rent a car unless you are prepared to drive on the left, amongst fearless local drivers and pot-hole-ridden roads.

Saint Lucia is full of amazing sights and activities that are sure to delight visitors from all over the world. One of the best things to start off with is to go snorkeling and scuba diving. The waters off of St. Lucia are clear, and its reefs are home to numerous species of tropical fish.

Next, you’ll want to check out the Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens. This six-acre site is nestled in a gorge and features a beautiful 50-foot waterfall, which is laced with natural minerals that give it a vivid, colorful appearance.

Finally, bird-lovers should head to the Bois D’Orange Swamp, the Rain Forest, and Boriel’s Pond, where they can spot a variety of stunning birds, including the St. Lucian Parrot, the White Breasted Thrasher, the St. Lucia Peewee, the St. Lucia Oriole, and the St. Lucia Wren.

going places travel near st lucia

Surfing in Saint Lucia is pretty good but not world-famous. Some good spots are Pigeon Point, Winjammer, and Commaret Point. The spots offer cross-shore winds and clean waves, and the nearby rental shops have equipment rentals for those looking to learn.

38. Can you go hiking in St Lucia?

Yes, there are amazing hiking trails in St. Lucia. There are many scenic trails to explore, such as the Barre de L’isle Rain Forest Trail and the Enbas Saut Trail.

Both hikes take approximately three hours and are quite steep, but offer stunning views and the opportunity to refresh yourself at the waterfall. Make sure to bring plenty of water and suitable hiking shoes.

The island also has two volcanos: Gros Piton and Petit Piton, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are great for hiking.

39. Do they have nightclubs in Saint Lucia?

Yes, they have a few nightclubs in Saint Lucia, but not a lot. If you want to have fun, every Friday night, locals and tourists gather for the Gros Islet Jump Up, a street party in the small town of Gros Islet that features Caribbean music, beer, lobster, and people-watching.

If you want to go to an actual nightclub, try Zen Nightclub, Ultra Lounge, or Club Red.

Language and Local Customs

40. what language do they speak in saint lucia.

going places travel near st lucia

In Saint Lucia, the official language is English, but most of the locals also speak French Creole. The place names often have a French origin, though they are not pronounced in the same way as French words.

Despite the strong French influence in the culture, the tourism industry is mostly oriented towards American and British visitors, with flights to the international airport coming mostly from major cities in the United States or London.

41. What are some common phrases used in St Lucia?

You can get along just fine with English when visiting the island, but if you want to learn a few local words, here are some greetings:

  • Bonjou (Hello)
  • Koman ou rele? (What is your name?)
  • Koman ou apre? (How are you?)
  • S’aw fè? (How are you?)
  • Byenbé (Goodbye)
  • Orevwa (Goodbye)
  • Mèsi (Thank you)
  • Pandanmèsi (Please)

42. What local customs should I be aware of in Saint Lucia?

When visiting Saint Lucia, there are a few local customs to be aware of. It is important to dress appropriately and respectfully. When entering any establishment, it is polite to say hello to people.

Additionally, given the conservative attitudes in the country toward the LGBT community, it is important to avoid public displays of affection.

Food and Drinks

43. how is the local food in saint lucia.

going places travel near st lucia

The local food in Saint Lucia is truly unique, drawing influence from many different cultures. From traditional dishes like green figs and saltfish, Lambi (conch), and Paime (dessert), to the national dish of stewed saltfish with boiled green bananas.

Barbecued pork and chicken are also very popular here, and for breakfast, you can enjoy cocoa tea made with local cocoa, spices, and milk, as well as hot, deep-fried bread.

44. Do they have seafood in St Lucia?

Yes, they have a lot of seafood in St Lucia! It is an island after all so fresh seafood is served pretty much everywhere. One of the best places to find it is at the Gros Islet Fish Fry, which is held every Friday night.

Most of us go the all-inclusive resorts, where all the meals are included, but I would suggest going to dinner one of the evenings and trying some local dishes.

45. Can I take a cooking class in Saint Lucia?

If you want to experience the local flavors, a cooking class in Saint Lucia is a great way to do it. Cook Like A Lucian offers classes focused on teaching local recipes and spices, while Cacoa Sainte Lucie will teach you to make fresh chocolate using cocoa grown from St. Lucian soil.

46. Do they have any special drinks in St Lucia?

St Lucia’s local beer is called Piton, a pilsner named after the Piton mountains. They are also famous for rum, which is known as the Spirit of St Lucia.

Sugar was first introduced to St Lucia in the 1700s and has since had a huge impact on the island’s culture, so rum is a big deal here, and each Caribbean island tends to have its own signature rums. Make sure to try a local Rum punch.

The Caribbean island of St Lucia is home to luxuriant rainforests, sun-drenched beaches and the staggering Pitons twin peaks. Yet having a wonderful time in this tropical paradise is possible without spending a fortune.

While the island's posh resorts and gourmet restaurants make it easy to be lured, St Lucia can be a budget traveler's dream. Explore cultural institutions, dive into local Creole cuisine, and enjoy lively street festivals – all without breaking the bank. Here are some recommendations to help you enjoy the beauty and charm of St Lucia without the hefty price tag.

Average daily costs in St Lucia

  • Basic room for two: US$30 to US$50
  • Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): US$50 to US$150
  • Public transport ticket: US$1 to US$3
  • Coffee: US$5
  • Sandwich : US$5
  • Dinner for two: US$10 to US$30
  • Beer/pint at the bar: US$6.50
  • Average daily cost: US$200 to US$450

1. Use public transport to get around

Minibuses are the primary means of transportation in St Lucia. These are privately operated and serve all 10 of the island's districts. It's an inexpensive way to navigate the island . The standard fare for a short trip is about US$0.50 (XC$1.25), while a longer journey will cost US$4 (XC$10). US dollars and euros are accepted, but the use of local currency is strongly encouraged.

Signal for a stop by waving your hand near the designated areas on the roadside. The driver will direct you appropriately if you let him know where you are going. Buses travel various routes throughout the week but are infrequent on Sundays. Green license plates with the prefix ‘M’ indicate the bus is an authorized service.

2. Eat at local restaurants

Eating out can quickly get expensive, especially in upscale areas like Rodney Bay . Venture into community restaurants frequented by locals instead and you’ll not only save money but eat some of the island’s most delicious and authentic food.

Located only five minutes from Rodney Bay, Gros Islet is the northernmost village on the island. The brightly painted wooden cottages lining the roadside serve classic St Lucian stews and grilled fish, plus international favorites like burgers and fries. Hang out at watering holes such as Irie Bar , Bar One and Bayside Chillerz close to the seafront and enjoy a cold Piton beer.

At the southernmost tip, in Vieux Fort, popular haunts like Island Breeze and Coastline Beach Bar near Sandy Beach serve refreshing drinks and sumptuous food. Be aware that restaurants near resorts and cruise ports tend to charge more because of the high volume of tourists who dine there.

3. …or shop for supermarket meals

Stop by Massy Stores for local meals at affordable prices. The supermarket chain typically offers pre-packaged lunches, including the national dish of green fig and saltfish, scalloped potatoes, cow heel soup, pelau (traditional rice dish with chicken or beef, pigeon peas and coconut milk), and ground provisions (a Caribbean name for traditional root vegetable staples such as yams, sweet potatoes and cassava), among lots more.

Rotis, chicken and beef patties, sandwiches and pastries are also available. You can also pick up portioned meats and sides to create your own feast. Prices range from US$6 to US$8 (XC$15 to $20).

4. Consider villas and apartments for accommodation

There are plenty of places to stay in St Lucia that cost less than US$100 per night. They might not be dripping with the amenities of a five-star resort, but they make up for it with coziness and an air of authenticity. Many of the villas are hidden away and offer stunning views, plus staying in a rental with a kitchen means you can save even more by stocking up on ingredients at the grocery store and cooking for yourself.

5. Lean into the rainy season

The hurricane and rainy season in St Lucia is from June to November . There are often better deals on hotels and resorts if you are willing to travel during this time. Storms do occur, and they can be quite powerful, but they tend to pass through the area quickly and have little lasting impact on the island experience. Recent years have been relatively hurricane-free for St Lucia, but anyone planning a trip during the wetter months should monitor the forecast closely.

6. Fly into the larger airport

There are two airports on the island of St Lucia: Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) and George F.L. Charles Airport (SLU). Both welcome international airlines and direct flights from North America , Europe  and neighboring Caribbean islands .

Flights into Hewanorra tend to be cheaper on major airlines such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Air Canada and British Airways.

7. Take ferries to nearby islands

If you’re lucky enough to already be visiting one of the stunning islands near St Lucia, traveling by boat is one of the most cost-effective ways to get here. L'Express des Îles runs a ferry service from Dominica , Guadeloupe  and Martinique to St Lucia several times a week.

Depending on your starting point, the trip can take anywhere from an hour to 4½ hours. The ferries operate year-round, with increased frequency in the summer. Traveling on a round-trip on one of the fast catamarans from St Lucia to any of the three islands above can cost as little as US$105.

8. Find free and low-cost activities and tours

St Lucia's beaches are open year-round and are usually free to the public. Some of the more popular spots include Reduit Beach and Pigeon Point in the north, Vigie Beach , five minutes from the capital city center, and Sandy Beach in the south. Anse la Voute, also known as Five Dollar Beach, sits on the rugged northeast coast and is ideal for barbecues. Access to the picturesque beach costs US$2 (roughly XC$5), which goes towards its upkeep.

A private white-sand beach sits just inside the Pigeon Island National Park entrance and is open to visitors. Adults pay US$10 (XC$27) to enter the park, while children aged 5 to 12 pay US$3 (XC$8). The park also houses the historic Fort Rodney and Signal Peak hilltops and multiple artifacts.

While most tours are self-guided, guided tours cost US$20 (XC$54) for a group of up to five people. Many other local landmarks and attractions are free to explore, including the Castries Market, Derek Walcott Square and The Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

Local tip: Buy tickets to major attractions on site to get the genuine price. Some websites may appear official but are run by tour companies upselling their services. Taking a taxi (or public transportation, depending on where you’re coming from) and having the driver return at a specific time is often more cost-effective than paying for an organized tour.

12 Things to Know Before Traveling to St. Lucia

author image

See recent posts by Toby Orton

Jade Mountain Resort, St. Lucia/Oyster

Instantly recognizable for its towering Pitons, St. Lucia is a Caribbean island paradise that combines rugged volcanic mountains, tropical rainforest, and sandy beaches. It strikes a balance between a developed, tourist-friendly island and a rustic destination full of local charm and unspoiled natural landscape, making it the perfect getaway for honeymooners and dive tourists alike. From the bustling, party-loving north to the laid-back serenity of the nature-heavy south, the island is packed with waterfalls, sandy stretches of beach, fresh seafood, and the list goes on. Here are 12 more things to know before you pack your bags for St. Lucia.

1. Tipping is discretionary.

St. Lucia doesn’t share quite the same tipping culture as the U.S. Most restaurants and bars will add 10 percent for service to the bill — anything additional is up to you. That said, St. Lucia is an island that relies heavily on tourism, so feel free to tip to your heart’s content if you feel you’ve received exceptional service from your taxi driver, tour guide, or bartender.

2. The beaches are all public.

Anse Chastanet Resort, St. Lucia/Oyster

Unlike some islands in the Caribbean , St. Lucia’s beaches are all open to the public. So, while there are plenty of beachside resorts, they don’t have exclusive access to the shore, meaning you’ll never have to face that terrible realization that the dreamy beach you’ve spotted is for resort guests only. That said, some resorts might restrict non-guests from using their sun loungers and beach bars.

3. You can use U.S. dollars.

St. Lucia has its own currency, the Eastern Caribbean dollar, but that doesn’t mean you need to convert an obscene amount of cash before you arrive. Most places accept U.S. dollars, though you might be given change in Eastern Caribbean dollars. Tip: Always carry some cash because the option to pay by card isn’t always available.

4. Don’t expect to find the quintessential white-sand Caribbean beach.

The White Sand at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort

When it comes to beaches , St Lucia is an anomaly. Yes, they’re beautiful and the water is clean and inviting, but don’t expect to see bright white sand. Being a huge mass of volcanic action, the sand in St. Lucia is a mix of orange and striking black, with only a few rare exceptions. However, if you’re desperate for a white-sand beach, head to Anse des Pitons. The man-made beach features pristine sand that is regularly imported.

5. Friday night is street party night.

Plenty of Caribbean islands host weekly street limes (parties), and St. Lucia is no different. Every Friday night, locals and tourists come together to dance, drink strong rum punch and ice-cold beer, and feast on fresh barbecued fish, crab, and lobster. Small, laid-back events are hosted around the island, but the main party is the Gros Islet Jump Up. The street party in the small town of Gros Islet features Caribbean music, beer, lobster and top-notch people-watching.

6. St. Lucia offers more than just beaches.

St. Lucia/Oyster

Sure, beaches are great, but St. Lucia is also home to a lush, tropical landscape worth exploring. There’s the 19,000-acre National Rain Forest, the Diamond Botanical Gardens, numerous waterfalls (including the amazing Sault Falls on the east side of the island), Sulphur Springs (complete with mud baths), and the Pitons — which you can hike up. Oh, and don’t miss a trip to a local market. Castries isn’t the greatest place to visit, but its bustling market is worth making an exception for.

7. Beach vendors and guides can be pushy.

When it comes to beach vendors and local tour guides, tourists can find themselves in a conundrum. On one hand, arranging boat tours or trips to the waterfalls and rainforest with a local not attached to your resort can save you a lot of money. On the other hand, with so many people vying for your time, things can get pushy. Vendors peddling buckets of beer, water sports activities, and sun loungers are likely to pester you, especially on Reduit Beach, so be prepared to be firm. Either that, or head to a quieter beach like Pigeon Island.

8. Hiking Pigeon Island is a must.

Pigeon Island, St. Lucia; Allan Harris/Flickr

Not an island at all, Pigeon Island is in fact a national park located in the northern part of St. Lucia and offers beautiful trails. Among the lush tropical forest, the remains of old military buildings — half covered in vegetation — crop up in unlikely spots. You can opt to hike alone or enlist in one of the many local tours that explore the area. Once you’ve conquered the trail — including climbing to the top of Fort Rodney where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the island — spend some time winding down on nearby Pigeon Island Beach.

9. The wildlife is amazing, but stray animals roam free.

While St. Lucia’s reef attracts an array of sea life, the island itself can more than match what’s going on below the surface of the waves. Visitors can expect to see hummingbirds, turtles (depending on the season), fireflies, iguanas, and a variety of bird species such as warblers and parrots. However, there are also a number of stray cats and dogs that roam the island, which might turn off some visitors. While charity groups are doing their best to find homes for some of these animals, the long-term problem of strays is one that the island has no real answer to.

10. Anse De Pitons and Anse Chastanet cater to all types of snorkeling.

Anse Chastanet Beach at the Anse Chastanet Resort, St. Lucia/Oyster

Anse de Pitons offers travelers the chance to snorkel at the foot of St. Lucia’s Pitons. The sea life here is stunning, but note that since it’s situated the foot of the mountain, the water depth jumps off and drops deep. If you want a gentler experience closer to the shore, Anse Chastanet is the better bet. Anse Chastanet is one of the island’s top snorkel spots, thanks to its proximity to a designated nature reserve roped off from boats.

11. Don’t be afraid to rent a car.

If you can handle a stick shift (most rentals aren’t automatic), a steering wheel on the right, and driving on the left-hand side of the road, then rent a car. While a lot of hotels run shuttle buses to beaches and attractions, hiring a car offers you the freedom to explore on your own schedule. St. Lucia is mountainous, so expect some steep ups and downs and plenty of winding corners. That said, there is only one main road on the island, so it’s difficult to get lost. Bear in mind that rental cars can be identified through their license plates, so think twice before leaving valuables in the car, especially if you park up somewhere quiet.

12. Beware of hurricane season.

St. Lucia is located in the hurricane belt, which means travelers might want to be picky about when they visit. Generally, the strongest storms coincide with the rainy season, which runs from June to November. While the temperatures are still warm during the off-season period, and prices are lower, you’ll want to decide whether you want to risk the wind and rain.

Jade Mountain is one of the most romantic resorts not only in the Caribbean, but the world, thanks to its incredible Piton views and extraordinary design. The 29 enormous suites, called “sanctuaries,” are hands-down the highlight; through the innovative, open fourth wall, each has a view of a sea from the entire room — from the canopied bed, raised whirlpool tub, and (in all but the entry-level category) private infinity pool.

This luxurious Viceroy is truly a stunner. It has arguably the best location on St. Lucia, right in between the Pitons, St. Lucia’s famous volcanic spires, and on a beautiful white-sand beach. Its 79 rooms are minimalistic, chic, and mostly white, and all come with private plunge pools, butlers, and 24-hour room service; the larger villas and cottages offer living rooms and huge bathrooms (some with outdoor showers and hot tubs).
