Thailand Gay Travel

From the streets of bangkok to the sun-soaked beaches of phuket, gay travellers love thailand's diverse landscape..

Thailand has a devoted fan base of gay and lesbian travellers of all stripes. From its white-sand beaches to its preserved tropical jungles, queer-welcoming cities and, of course, spicy cuisine, there’s something for everyone.

White-Sand Beaches

Along its peninsular south alone, The Land of Smiles boasts more beaches than any other Southeast Asian destination. In Phuket, hedonists can drink fresh coconut water on popular Patong Beach by day and throw back shots of Sangsom with local Kathoey (drag queens) by night. In Krabi, a more peaceful respite awaits LGBT jet setters, with many resorts only accessible by longtail boat. Sea kayaking, snorkelling and even scuba diving are available at both destinations. Meanwhile, baby gays flock to Thailand’s numerous islands, such as Koh Tao and Koh Samui, to indulge in the azure waters, cheap beer and full moon parties (a wild affair popularized by Leonard Decaprio’s cult classic, The Beach).

Tropical Jungles

Eco-tourism has a long history in Thailand, where the endangered Asian elephant roams in the lush (but slowly shrinking) tropical jungles. The country’s mountainous north is particularly well known for its cool-climate countryside. Fields carpeted in rice paddies collide with jungle and mountain. Gay hikers looking to explore this agricultural region are often rewarded with picturesque waterfalls and a menagerie of exotic birds, butterflies and adorable wildlife.

Queer-Welcoming Cities

Bangkok is the country’s capital and the beating heart of its LGBT scene. While the noisy city isn’t for everyone, more often than not, visitors are enthralled by its blend of modernism and tradition. For example, you’ll see saffron-clad monks shopping the city’s numerous megamalls and BMWs parked in front of centuries-old Buddhist temples. A sophisticated rapid train (the MRT) ushers locals between skyscrapers, The Grand Palace and the Chao Phraya River. For those looking to savour the city’s gay nightlife, head to Silom 2 near the Central Business District. In our opinion, Silom 2 offers one of the most (if not the most) welcoming and accessible gay scenes throughout Asia.

Spicy Cuisine

At Out Adventures HQ, we have a popular saying: Travel Stomach First. In other words, we let our taste buds lead us worldwide. And, like so many before us, our taste buds have led us to Thailand, where a symphony of fiery chillies, salty fish sauce, fresh sugar cane and tangy citrus fruits paint a culinary masterpiece. In Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son and other northern provinces, you’ll love the tropical curries. Meanwhile, in the south, freshly hooked seafood is grilled with lemongrass and chillies. If you want an authentic taste of Thailand’s famous cuisine, we highly recommend booking a popular street food tour, guided market visit or Thai cooking class.

LGBT Rights in Thailand

Gay thailand travel, best places to visit in thailand.

Despite Thailand’s open arms policy towards gay foreigners, LGBT locals still fight for equal rights and protections. A divide exists between how gay westerners and gay locals are treated.

Gay Activity:  Legal Lesbian Activity:  Legal Gay Marriage:  Other Type of Partnership Right to Change Gender:  Illegal Same-Sex Adoption:  Married Couples Only LGBT Discrimination:  Illegal in Some Contexts Equal Age of Consent:  Equal

Thailand is an exceptional destination for gay travellers. Most major cities in Thailand, including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and even Patong (Phuket), have vibrant gay scenes with colourful nightlife – their cabarets are world-renowned! Even smaller cities tend to have gay-welcoming bars frequented by locals and tourists.

5. Koh Samui

Home of the infamous Full Moon Party, Koh Samui is a long-celebrated tropical oasis. Koh Samui tends to be populated by younger backpackers. Still, the shockingly beautiful island has plenty to offer seasoned travellers as well including some of the country’s best snorkelling and scuba diving.

Phuket is Thailand’s premiere resort island and has one of the country’s largest gay scenes. The main drag is buzzing – often overcrowded – and not worth much of your time. However, renting a scooter and exploring the island’s less-visited sections may lead to secret beaches, memorable food experiences and some incredible Andaman vantages.

3. Chiang Rai

On the cusp of Myanmar and Laos sits the province of Chiang Rai. Climb the region’s colourful mountains or descend into its lush valleys and the snaking Mekong.

2. Chiang Mai

When you’ve had just about enough of Bangkok’s frenzy, take shelter in calming Chiang Mai. This northern capital is distinctly Thai and has a wide range of cultural activities to keep visitors entertained.

Bangkok is the true epicentre of Gay Asia and the East’s answer to ‘The City that Never Sleeps.’ It is a thrilling extravaganza full of cultural highlights, historical sights, gastronomic delights and BIG city nights. After a day exploring the sprawling city, head to Silom for some of the best gay nightlife in all of Asia, including world-class Cabarets and drag shows, exceptional gay bars and dangerously packed gay clubs.

Best Time to Visit:  Winter (Nov-Mar) is the ideal time to visit Thailand. Temperatures are cooler, and – depending on which side of the country you visit – there’s less chance of rain. Even then, it will be hot and sticky, with daytime temperatures exceeding 30C/85F.

Electricity:  A-, B-, and C-type sockets.

Time Zone:  (GMT+07:00) Bangkok, Hanoi, Jakarta

Covid-19 Vaccination Requirements: We’re dedicated to ensuring our tours are safe for everyone, but it is our belief that each traveler has a responsibility to protect themselves and their fellow travellers from COVID-19. As of May 1, 2023, Out Adventures no longer requires guests to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination on most of our tours. If vaccination is a requirement for entry, or on select cruises, this will be communicated at the time a trip is confirmed to depart. Before booking, we recommend that you read our COVID-19 Information Page and our COVID-19 Frequently Asked Questions to understand what we’re doing to minimize risk, and what will happen if you contract COVID-19 before or during an Out Adventures tour.

Other Vaccinations: Based on the entry requirements for Thailand, there are no other vaccinations needed. To determine if you should take preventative measures to reduce the risk of illness, you should consult your doctor or a travel medical clinic, as Out Adventures cannot provide vaccination recommendations.

Visas:  A visa is not typically required for American, Australian, British and Canadian citizens travelling to Thailand for fewer than 30 days. There may be exceptions, and all visas are the traveller’s responsibility.

Gay Thailand Uncovered: Top Destinations And Tips For Queer Travelers! 🇹🇭

Queer travel expert Jack Kenworthy turns 250+ city adventures into your guide for safe, vibrant, and inclusively fabulous global journeys.

Ah, Thailand! A mosaic of golden temples, cerulean beaches, and bustling cities where the sound of tuk-tuks mingles with the scent of spicy street food. But, for the discerning queer traveler, Gay Thailand offers more than just a postcard-perfect vacation. It beckons with a promise of acceptance and a celebration of diversity, creating a vibrant tapestry rich in culture, tradition, and inclusivity.

Delve deeper into the political heart of Gay Thailand, and you’ll find a progressive nation leading the way in Southeast Asia. While many Asian countries grapple with LGBTQ+ rights, Thailand has consistently championed the queer cause. Though there’s still work to be done, the kingdom has taken significant steps towards marriage equality and transgender rights, establishing itself as a safe haven for many in the LGBTQ+ community.

Venture into the neon-lit streets of Bangkok , and you’ll discover why Gay Thailand is synonymous with electric nightlife. From the swanky rooftop bars overlooking the city’s skyline to the pulsating beats of Silom’s gay clubs, there’s an effervescent energy that captures the spirit of freedom and acceptance. And while the capital remains a major LGBTQ+ hotspot, don’t miss out on the laid-back vibes of Pattaya or the idyllic beaches of Phuket , where queer-friendly establishments are plentiful.

But beyond these kaleidoscopic experiences, the true allure of Gay Thailand lies in the heartwarming stories of its queer citizens. From vivacious drag performers and hardworking activists to everyday locals navigating their own coming-of-age tales, their narratives are woven into the country’s fabric. Their resilience and joy serve as a testament to Thailand’s unique place in the global LGBTQ+ landscape.

In a world where acceptance can sometimes feel like an oasis in a desert, Gay Thailand stands tall as a beacon of hope. With its delicate blend of ancient traditions and modern sensibilities, it remains a magnetic destination for LGBTQ+ wanderers, inviting them to not just witness but to become a part of its enchanting story. So, pack your bags and set your compass towards a journey that promises memories, merriment, and a deep sense of belonging.

Gay Thailand - LBGT Thailand - Queer Thailand Travel Guide

In this article we will cover...

History Of LGBT Rights In Thailand

The lgbt legal situation in thailand, the lgbt social situation in thailand, trans rights in thailand, the future for the queer community in thailand, protect yourself while travelling in gay thailand, best gay destinations in thailand.

Thailand has a long-standing history of LGBT acceptance, with the documentation of homosexuality dating back to the Ayutthaya period (1351 to 1767). Samutthakhot Kham Chan (สมุทรโฆษคำฉันท์), a Thai literature from Ayuttaya times, mentions lesbian relationships among the concubines in the royal palace.

In recent years, Thailand has made significant progress in legal protections and positive societal attitudes towards the LGBT community. The enactment of a comprehensive anti-discrimination law in 2015 covered both sexual orientation and gender identity and marked a pivotal step forward.

For travelers, the main cities like Bangkok , Chiang Mai , and Phuket are known to be more accepting and inclusive of LGBT individuals. However, it is essential to be cautious and vigilant, as situations may change, and not all areas or individuals may share the same level of acceptance. Remember to seek up-to-date information and advice before traveling, as outdated information may not accurately represent the current situation.

Thailand boasts several LGBT advocacy groups, including organizations like the Anjaree Foundation and the Thai Transgender Alliance . These groups work to further protect and promote LGBT rights and inclusion in the country. While there have been significant advancements in legal protections, there is still room for growth, such as the push for legal recognition of same-sex marriage and families.

It is vital for both local people and tourists to remain connected with the current situation as changes and challenges may arise. As a visitor in Thailand, it is crucial to respect and follow local laws and customs while being mindful of personal safety. Recognize that, like in any country, there may be individuals who are not supportive or accepting.

Remember, be vigilant, stay informed, and enjoy the rich cultural experience that Thailand has to offer to its LGBT community and travelers!

Gay Thailand - LBGT Thailand - Queer Thailand Travel Guide

Thailand is often seen as a paradise for LGBT tourists; however, the situation for locals may not be as tolerant. The legal landscape for the LGBT community is complex. Both male and female same-sex sexual activity is legal in the country, but same-sex couples and households headed by same-sex couples do not have the same legal protections as opposite-sex couples.

When traveling to Thailand, it is essential to understand that the situation can change rapidly, and information might become outdated. Therefore, always seek current advice before you embark on your journey. While you’re in the country, remain vigilant, as bad actors can be found everywhere.

In the main cities, like Bangkok and Chiang Mai, locals are more accepting and open-minded towards the LGBT community. However, some rural areas may not be as welcoming. When visiting these locations, be cautious and respect their culture.

As for the safety of LGBT travelers, taking precautions and staying informed about the local scene is highly recommended. Connecting with LGBT advocacy groups in Thailand, such as the Thai Transgender Alliance or The Anjaree Group , can provide additional information and support during your stay.

In conclusion, the legal situation of LGBT rights in Thailand is a mix of progress and setbacks. The country has a long way to go in terms of equal rights and protections. But, with the enthusiastic attitude of the Thai people and the continuous work of LGBT advocacy groups, we can hope for a brighter and more inclusive future. Always remember to stay informed, be cautious, and enjoy your time in the beautiful country of Thailand!

Gay Thailand - LBGT Thailand - Queer Thailand Travel Guide

Thailand is often perceived as a welcoming and inclusive country for LGBT+ individuals, especially among tourists. Visitors frequenting major cities such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai may find thriving LGBT+ scenes with many bars, clubs, and other entertainment venues catering to this community. However, it is essential to understand that local LGBT+ individuals may still face challenges in their daily lives that tourists might not experience.

Although Thailand has decriminalized same-sex sexual activity, broader legal protections for the local LGBT+ community are still lacking—such as anti-discrimination laws or legal recognition of same-sex relationships. This missing legal framework can create constraints and limitations for Thai LGBT+ individuals in various aspects, including work, education, and at home.

In terms of safety, it is always important to remain cautious and vigilant. While many parts of Thailand may seem perfectly safe for LGBT+ tourists, bad actors can be present in any country. Be aware of your surroundings and follow local advice, as situations can change quickly. If you are unsure about your safety, consult with up-to-date resources or get in touch with local LGBT advocacy groups for guidance.

Some notable LGBT advocacy groups in Thailand include the Anjaree Foundation , which focuses on lesbian rights, and the Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand, a group that works on promoting the rights of all LGBT+ individuals. If you are looking to connect with locals, gain insights into the community, or seek guidance, they may provide valuable information on both the vibrant scenes and the challenges faced by LGBT+ individuals in the country.

To stay informed, it’s important to always seek current advice before traveling, as information can become outdated quickly. Additionally, while visiting Thailand, remain respectful of local customs and traditions, as doing so will contribute positively to your experience and interactions with the LGBT+ community.

So, while Thailand may appear to be an exciting and inclusive destination for LGBT+ tourists, bear in mind that there is still work to be done regarding the local social situation. Stay informed, respect local culture, and support those actively working towards achieving broader LGBT+ rights in Thailand.

Gay Thailand - LBGT Thailand - Queer Thailand Travel Guide

Thailand is often perceived as a progressive country when it comes to LGBT rights. The vibrant and accepting lifestyle, particularly in the main cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket, creates an exciting atmosphere for both local and international LGBT individuals. However, despite the relative social acceptance, Thai law still has room for improvement when it comes to trans rights.

Transgender people in Thailand face significant challenges in obtaining legal recognition for their gender identity. This lack of legal protection makes them vulnerable to various forms of discrimination, impacting their ability to access education, employment, and healthcare.

When traveling in Thailand, it’s essential to stay up-to-date on the current situation concerning LGBT rights and remain vigilant. Situations can change quickly, and it’s advisable to seek advice from local LGBT advocacy groups – such as the Thai Transgender Alliance – before setting off on your journey.

As a visitor, you can play a role in supporting the local LGBT community by showing respect and understanding. Be cautious of bad actors who may take advantage of travelers, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. If necessary, take steps to protect yourself and make connections with supportive individuals and organizations.

In conclusion, while Thailand has made progress in recent years, there’s still work to be done to ensure legal protections and equal rights for transgender individuals. It’s essential for both locals and tourists to stay informed, remain vigilant, and support the ongoing efforts of LGBT advocacy groups in the country.

Gay Thailand - LBGT Thailand - Queer Thailand Travel Guide

The future of LGBT rights in Thailand seems promising, especially with the increase in feminist and LGBTQ+ protests since 2020. The country has started gaining international recognition as an LGBTQ+-friendly destination. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has even launched a global project entitled “ Go Thai Be Free ” to encourage LGBTQ+ tourists from around the world and raise its profile as an LGBTQ+-friendly country.

While tourists may experience a welcoming atmosphere, it is essential to understand that the local LGBTQ+ community might still face challenges. Although some cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai are more progressive, individuals in smaller regions could encounter resistance or discrimination. It is crucial for tourists and locals alike to stay vigilant and be aware of potential risks.

To ensure an informed and safe trip, travelers should seek up-to-date information and advice from reliable sources, including LGBT advocacy groups in Thailand, such as the Thai Transgender Alliance. Situations can change fast, and it is best to stay informed and proactive.

While exploring the vibrant culture and nightlife of cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai, maintaining a cautious mindset and being respectful of local customs and traditions will allow you to have the best experience possible. Recognize that situations may change in various regions and adapt accordingly.

In conclusion, the future of LGBT rights in Thailand looks optimistic, with encouraging initiatives and a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ tourists. As you embark on this exciting journey, always remain vigilant to ensure a memorable and safe adventure. Remember to engage with advocacy groups for up-to-date information and advice, respect local customs, and, most importantly, enjoy the vibrant and diverse culture that Thailand has to offer.

Gay Thailand - LBGT Thailand - Queer Thailand Travel Guide

Thailand may be an exciting destination for LGBTQ+ tourists, but it’s crucial to understand the differences in experiences for local LGBTQ+ individuals and visitors to the country. While Bangkok is often seen as an LGBTQ+ paradise, the rights and protections for locals might be less tolerant compared to what tourists encounter.

To ensure your safety and enjoyment while visiting Thailand, consider taking a few precautions and staying informed about the current situation. Start by researching the most up-to-date information on LGBTQ+ rights and changes in the political landscape, as this information can change quickly, and outdated sources might provide inaccurate guidance.

When traveling to Thailand, it is always a good idea to stay vigilant and be aware of your surroundings, just as you would in any other country. As there are bad actors everywhere, it’s essential to exercise caution and be mindful of your actions.

Familiarize yourself with local LGBTQ+ advocacy groups in Thailand, such as the Tourism Authority of Thailand and Human Rights Watch . These organizations work towards promoting equal rights and protection for LGBTQ+ individuals and can provide valuable resources for travelers looking for advice and current information.

Take note of the experiences in main cities like Bangkok and other prominent locations mentioned in your research. Understand that there can be significant differences in LGBTQ+ rights and experiences within different regions and cities.

Remember to approach all situations with excitement while being cautious about your safety as you experience the vibrant culture and welcoming nature of Thailand. By staying informed and vigilant, you can help protect yourself and ensure a memorable trip.

Our gay Thailand tour focuses on cultural aspects while still enjoying a hike and canoe ride in Khao Sok National Park. There is a lot of culture to soak up in Thailand. We will enjoy river cruises, local cuisine, elephants, and gorgeous scenery.

Day 1: Arrival into Bangkok

Thailand Bangkok Arrival

Welcome to Bangkok! Upon arrival, a local guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to our hotel. Since most flights arrive in the evening, there are no scheduled activities on this day. However, if you arrive early, we can arrange some pre-tour sightseeing if you wish.

Day 2: Temples!

gay tours of thailand

After breakfast, we will make our way to the amazing Grand Palace, home of Thailand’s king. We will also visit the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and its jade Buddha statue. We will wrap up the afternoon with a visit to Wat Pho to see more of Thailand’s rich Buddhist heritage.

This afternoon we will explore the Klongs (canals) of Thonburi. Our first stop is at the impressive Wat Arun, named for the Indian goddess of dawn. We then follow narrow canals through neighborhoods where the canal serves as the main “road”. Next, we’ll visit Chinatown and sample some local delicacies. Enjoy the City of Angels’ cultural contrasts by night over the Chao Praya River. Take in the views of the Temple of Dawn, Royal Barges House, Grand Palace, and other splendid temples.

Day 3: Damnoen Saduak – Kanchanaburi

Thailand Railway Market

Today we will head south from Bangkok to the garden province of Samut Songkhram. We will spend time walking along the famous Maeklong Railway Market and immersing ourselves in the local culture. Then we will continue to Damnoen Saduak floating market and climb aboard a long-tail boat for a canal cruise. We will have the opportunity to view how the Thai people live, including observing farmers working in the salt fields.

In the afternoon, we will drive west to Kanchanaburi, the site of the original “Bridge over the River Kwai”. We will pause to reflect at the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and JEATH War Museum, a realistic depiction of prisoner of war living quarters, including detailed memorabilia dating from WWII. The name honors the Japanese, English, Australian, American, Thai and Holland soldiers who served in the strategic region that straddles the Thai and Burmese borders. The prisoners of war built the Thai-Burma Railway, often called the “Death Railway” because of the many lost lives during its building.

Day 4: Erawan National Park – Saiyok

Thailand National Park

This morning we will enjoy a bamboo rafting adventure along the River Kwai. Then we will set off to visit the Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum, located where the railroad was cut into a cliff. This afternoon we will enjoy the largest and most amazing waterfall in the region, Erawan Waterfall, located on the bank of the Kwai Yai River in Khao Salop National Park. Enjoy some peaceful, serene time here surrounded by countless species of plants and flowers. We will have time to relax and enjoy our natural surroundings before heading to Saiyok for the rest of the afternoon.

Day 5: Ayuthaya – UNESCO site

Thailand Bangkok River

Today’s adventure starts by taking a local boat from our hotel to a nearby station where we board a train for a 45-minute ride on the rail line originally built by the prisoners.

Later we will travel to Ayutthaya, Thailand’s former capital. It is known for the ruins from its prestigious past and is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This afternoon we will visit Wat Phra Si Sanphet, a royal sanctuary, and Wat Chaiwatthanaram, built by King PresatThong in 1630 with images such as Buddha preaching to his mother in heaven.

Day 6: Wat Phananchoeng – Chao Phraya River

This morning we will see the diversity that made Ayutthaya a strong kingdom and major trading center. Our stops will include a Buddhist temple in the old Chinese quarter, the Japanese Village, and the Muslim Quarter where we can sample local cuisine such as candy floss roti. Surprisingly, there is also a Dutch Settlement, Baan Hollanda, from which trade with Europe was carried out.

Thailand Cuisine Pad Thai

For lunch, we will board a traditional teak rice barge and drift along the majestic Chao Phraya River, the River of Kings. Onboard we will enjoy a delicious selection of Thai food as we cruise around Ayutthaya and its old capital. This afternoon we will visit Bang Pa-In Summer Palace. Built in the 1600s as the summer residence for the Royal Family, this palace is an impressive collection of gardens and majestic mansions.

Day 7: Bangkok/Chiang Rai

Thailand Chiang Rai

After breakfast, we will drive to Bangkok airport and take our flight to Chiang Rai. Upon arrival, we will meet our local guide to transfer to our long-tail boat for a cruise on the Mae Kok River. The ride is more about the journey than the destination – the spectacular mountain scenery and opportunity to visit hill-tribe villages along the way make this one of the most enjoyable river trips in Thailand.

Day 8: Golden Triangle – Chiang Rai

Thailand Golden Buddha

This morning, we depart to the village of Santi Khiri, founded in 1960 on a lovely mountain. It was built by Chinese Kuomintang peasant-soldiers expelled from Burma, where they had gone after losing China to the Communists in 1949. We will also visit ethnic villages and stroll through a bucolic tea plantation. Next, we will climb onto an I Tan, a vehicle used to transport rice after harvest. We will visit a village of the Akha ethnic group. This village is under the King’s patronage for planting fruit trees and vegetables to replace the drug trade that used to be a major source of income here in the “Golden Triangle”. After lunch, the rest of the day will be at leisure back at our Chiang Rai hotel.

Day 9: Chiang Mai

Thailand White Temple

Today we will visit Chiang Rai’s amazing White Temple, a masterpiece of Thai architecture. It was founded in 2000 by renowned Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat and it is made of white concrete and several thousand small mirrors.

Afterward, we will drive through the lush hills to Chiang Mai (about a 3-hour drive) and visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of Chiang Mai’s most important landmarks where sacred Buddha relics are preserved in a golden stupa. The panoramic view of Chiang Mai is absolutely fantastic.

This evening, we will head to the cultural center for a Khantoke dinner! Enjoy the northern cuisine, consisting of several tasting dishes, while enjoying traditional music with dancers.

Day 10: Elephant Nature Park

Thailand Ox Cart

After breakfast, we will head north to Mae Taman Elephant Camp. Here we will observe elephants in their daily life: working, training, and bathtime! Then we will walk for about an hour through the mountainous jungle to the river, ending with an ox-cart ride to a spot where we will have lunch. In the afternoon, we will visit a garden of orchids and admire over 150 amazing species of different sizes, diversity, and beauty.

Day 11: Chiang Mai – Khao Sok

Thailand Khao Sok

Today we fly from Chiang Mai to Phuket Airport, from which we will transfer to Khao Sok National Park. In the afternoon, we will enjoy a leisurely canoe ride down the Khao Sok River, spotting unique flora and fauna, and passing limestone cliffs and evergreen mountains along the way. We will enjoy a cup of coffee or tea made on a bamboo stick and served in bamboo cups while we soak in the beautiful nature surrounding us.

We’ll spend the next two nights in unique bungalows with air-conditioning inside and decks outside from which you can listen to the nocturnal sounds of the jungle.

Day 12: Khao Sok National Park

Thailand Khao Sok National Park

After breakfast, we will depart for Khao Sok, one of the biggest and oldest national parks in the world.  Along the way, we will stop at a local market and temple. Then we will explore the riverside by canoe, being paddled by your guide, as you sit back and relax. We will pass towering limestone cliffs and spot monitor lizards, kingfishers, and monkeys along the way. If interested, we can stop for a cool dip in the water and enjoy a coffee made from a bamboo cup.

Enjoy a Thai lunch back at your resort lodge before we head out to enjoy an elephant camp.

Day 13: Khao Sok National Park – Phuket

Thailand Rhino Hornbill

After an unforgettable night in one of the unique bungalows, we will head to Barrier Lake. We will make our way via a longtail boat. Then enjoy a 1-2 hour walk at Klong Kla with our experienced guide as we head deep into the jungle to explore Prakaiphet Cave. After lunch at the bamboo raft house, we will have time to swim and relax.

Day 14: Phuket

Thailand Long Boat Phuket

Today we will drive along the coastline to a gorgeous viewpoint of three of Phuket’s most beautiful beaches before continuing to Promthep Cape. From there we will visit Wat Chalong, a revered monastery with an interesting history of the temple’s abbot. Then we will enjoy time in Phuket’s old town, which used to be the island’s commercial center. We will walk around and enjoy the unique Sino-Portuguese architecture.

This evening we will enjoy our farewell dinner at a hotel just off Phuket’s Patong Beach. After dinner, you may want to check out the gay nightlife just up the hill from our hotel.

Day 15: Departure

After breakfast, you will have the morning free. The main tour ends with a transfer to Phuket airport in time for your flight. If flying through Bangkok, please schedule your departure flight out of Bangkok for 3 PM or later. We can help reserve a Bangkok Airport hotel if your flight is during the night or the next day.

LGBTQ+ Travel Guide to Thailand

Thailand is a popular destination in Asia for LGBTQ+ travelers.  The Thais are extremely welcoming people and have been embracing LGBTQ+ tourists for decades. Thailand is frequently referred to as The Land of Smiles, and for good reason. Most involved with the tourism industry in Thailand speak English, so language barriers will rarely be a problem here. The capital city, Bangkok is very modern, and a transport hub for destinations in Asia. Chiang Mai to the north is the country’s second-biggest city. It is located in the mountains and famous for its temples and outdoor adventure. The Thai islands are popular beach destinations, particularly Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phi Phi.

Although Thailand is not as LGBTQ+-friendly as North America and Western Europe by comparison, by Asian standards, it is one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly countries on the continent. Thailand is one of the few countries in Asia that is reviewing passing civil partnership legislation. In addition, anti-discrimination laws have been in place in Thailand since 2015 and it offers some of the best protections for the transgender community in Asia.

Nonetheless, as with most places in Asia, Thai society is conservative. Outward displays of affection are generally uncommon by both straight and same-sex couples. For example, when greeting someone for the first time, the Thais do not hug or kiss and rarely shake hands. Instead they traditionally put their palms together in a lotus bud by the chest and bow the head.  LGBTQ+ travelers to Thailand are unlikely to ever encounter homophobia during their holiday. It is a destination that is sure to captivate you so that you will no doubt be planning your next trip back to the Land of Smiles as soon as you’ve departed.

Why Visit & When to Go?

Thailand offers the perfect holiday. Bangkok is the largest transport hub with a terrific LGBTQ+ scene, Chiang Mai in the north is a great base to get a more cultural insight into the temples and enjoy some outdoor fun in the mountains and finally, the islands in the south offer the ideal beach holiday.

Thailand is tropical and hot throughout the year. It has three seasons: hot, cold and rainy. The cold season is from November to February, when temperatures are on average a comfortable mid 20s Celsius (77 F). This is Thailand’s peak season, especially around Christmas, New Year’s and the Chinese New Year in February. The hot season is from March to June, with average temperatures around 30-35 degrees Celsius (86-95 F). This may be too hot for some, so Thailand is less busy during this shoulder season.

The rainy season varies slightly depending on which coast you are visiting, but generally starts around June and continues to late October. During this time, it does not rain constantly, but almost every day there are periods of intense rain lasting for no more than a few hours. This is Thailand’s low season with some islands shutting down completely and boat services limited during stormy weather.

Interesting Cities to Visit in Thailand

Silom in  Bangkok  is home to a large LGBTQ+ scene in Thailand. The pedestrianized road Silom Soi 4 is a staple for all LGBTQ+ travelers visiting Bangkok with many bars, which are busy every night of the week. A few blocks away is Silom Soi 2 where the city’s gay clubs like DJ Station can be found. Bangkok also has many modern shopping malls as well as sightseeing gems worth visiting such as the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, the Khlong Lat Mayom floating market and the bustling streets of the city’s Chinatown.  Read more about Bangkok from Passport Magazine >>

Chiang Mai is the largest city in North Thailand and is considered the country's top cultural destination, housing more than 300 Buddhist temples. Many well-known temples can be found within the walled historic center, but the most famous temple is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, which overlooks the city from a mountainside 13km (8 mi) away. The mountains also offer outdoor adventures, from treks to biking. Other cultural highlights in Chiang Mai include cooking, perfecting your haggling skills at the night market and visiting a reputable elephant sanctuary like the  Elephant Nature Park .  Read more about Chiang Mai from Out There Magazine >>

Krabi is a city in Southwest Thailand and is a convenient base to visit some of the more popular islands in the Andaman Sea, like Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. Krabi is surrounded by limestone karsts, and its white sandy beaches are popular, particularly Ao Nang and Railay Beach. Also worth a visit is the Wat Tham Sua “Tiger Cave,” part of a temple complex where monks live and worship within a maze of natural caves surrounded by lush jungle.

Koh Lipe is a small island in the southwest, close to the Malaysian border. Sunrise Beach is the cleanest beach on the island with the clearest water. The healthy coral rich with marine life makes it ideal for snorkeling. There are plenty of upmarket hotels on Sunrise Beach, as well as more budget-friendly options and even a gay-owned guesthouse. Koh Adang is a large secluded island close to Koh Lipe just 10 minutes away by tailboat. It’s ideal for a day trip for snorkeling and to escape the large crowds of Koh Lipe.

Koh Tao island is in southeast Thailand and famous for scuba diving. Most come here to get their PADI certification from one of the many dive shops and as a result, Koh Tao has become quite touristy. Nonetheless, it remains an island worth visiting not just for the underwater world, but for the many beautiful beaches. The most popular beach on the island is Sairee Beach on the west side. More secluded beaches worth checking out include Freedom Beach in the south and Ao Tanote in the east.

Interesting Attractions to Visit in Thailand

Getting up close with elephants in chiang mai.

When visiting Chiang Mai, you are encouraged to boycott the terrible elephant-riding industry. Young elephants are beaten into submission until they are judged to be completely submissive to perform tricks and carry humans. This is called elephant crushing and sadly persists throughout Asia. Instead, travelers are advised to visit an ethical organization like the Elephant Nature Park, which is a rescue center and sanctuary for elephants where you can get up close to them, bathe them, hug them and feed them; anything but riding them!

SCUBA DIVING IN PARADISE NEAR KOH LANTA

Koh Lanta is an excellent base to pursue your scuba diving skills after receiving your qualification in Koh Tao. It has some of the best reefs in Thailand, particularly around the smaller islets like Koh Haa and Koh Rok. There are many highly rated scuba diving tours you can do from Krabi or Koh Lanta. Highlights include turtles, many tropical fish and even a few reef sharks.

LEARNING TO MAKE THE PERFECT PAD THAI

Pad Thai is the country’s national dish, which was popularized during the Second World War. It is a common street food, and very easy to make. Chiang Mai is popular for cooking classes, but you can do them throughout the country and most will also include other recipes such as som tam (spicy papaya salad) and red, yellow or green curry.

BARGAINING AT A MARKET

Thailand has some of the world’s best markets, selling everything from fake Gucci purses to beautifully handcrafted souvenirs. It’s also the perfect place to test your bargaining skills. The trick is to ignore the heavily inflated asking price, counter offer 30 percent and from there patiently work toward a price both parties are happy to accept. You can always walk away if you feel uncomfortable, which will often lead to the vendor calling you back with a reduced price. Some of the best markets include the Night Bazaar in Chiang Mai and the massive Chatuchak weekend market in Bangkok.

JUNGLE TREKKING, BIKING AND KAYAKING ON KOH TARUTAO

Koh Tarutao in the southwest is a paradise for adventure travelers. Although it was a former concentration camp for political prisoners, the island is now headquarters for the Koh Tarutao National Park and strictly controlled by the government. As such, it is completely underdeveloped with only a few restaurants and basic bungalows or camping spaces. You can rent bikes here to reach the remote jungle trails to scenic gems like the Lu Du Waterfall. You can also kayak through the mangrove forest at Ao Rusi on the northeastern side of the island.

FEEL LIKE LEONARDO DICAPRIO AT MAYA BAY

One of the most famous films about Thailand is The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio, set in the crystal-blue waters of the Maya Bay cove on Koh Phi Phi island in the southeast of the country. However, since this film was released in 2000, Koh Phi Phi has become one of the country’s most visited spots, especially during November-February. The best time to visit is after 4:30 pm when the day tripper crowds have left. While you cannot stay the night here, you can join a sleep-aboard sunset cruise and have your “Leonardo moment” in paradise.

Note:  Maya Bay's shores will be off-limits to tourists  until at least June 2021 to allow for its natural resources to regenerate.

Experiencing Thai Food

Thai food is world famous  and for good reason. It’s full of flavor, easy to make and very healthy. The most famous Thai dish is Pad Thai, which is a stir-fried rice noodle dish cooked with eggs, fish sauce, garlic, shallots, bean sprouts, coriander leaves, tofu or chicken, tamarind pulp and served with spring onions, crushed nuts and lime juice. It was popularized during World War II and has become the country’s national dish.

Som Tam is spicy green papaya salad made with shredded papaya, pounded in a pestle and mortar with lime juice, palm sugar, chili, garlic, shrimp, nut, tomatoes, fish sauce, bean sprouts and green beans. Curries are also ubiquitous throughout Thailand. The most famous are named after the color of the chilis used: red, green and yellow. In the south, Massaman curry is more popular, which is a richer tasting curry with coconut milk that is not as spicy as its colorful cousins. Mango sticky rice is a favorite among Thai desserts. Sticky rice is made from glutinous rice and it is cooked with coconut milk and palm sugar, then served with pieces of mango.

Safety Considerations for LGBTQ Visitors to Thailand

Although Thailand lags behind North America and Western Europe with regards to LGBTQ+ rights, by Asian standards, Thailand is a LGBTQ+-friendly country. Homosexuality was legalized in 1956, well before the UK in 1967 and the United States (on a national level) in 2003. Gays and lesbians have been allowed to serve openly in the military since 2005 and many pieces of anti-discrimination legislation have been introduced since 2015. Recognition of same-sex couples is under review, but adoption for same-sex couples remains illegal. Thailand also has very progressive laws for the transgender community, with the right to change legal gender enshrined in law since 2007.

LGBTQ+ tourists are unlikely to encounter any homophobia in Thailand. The country has been welcoming LGBTQ+ tourists for decades and it remains one of the most popular LGBTQ+-friendly destinations across the entire continent. However, Thai society is overall conservative, so all visitors should exercise caution with public displays of affection.

LGBTQ+ Travel Tips for Thailand

The most LGBTQ+-friendly destination in Thailand is most likely Bangkok, which offers one of the best LGBTQ+ scenes in Asia. Phuket and Pattaya are also popular LGBTQ+ destinations in the country. Other islands which have a small LGBTQ+ community include Koh Pha-Ngan, Koh Samui and even tiny Koh Lipe.  Phuket Pride  is the country’s largest LGBTQ+ event, which takes place in April and has been going strong since 1999.

Bangkok used to have a pride event from 1999 until 2009, but was discontinued because of a mix of disinterest from local Thai activists, lack of funding and homophobia from the police and government.

Finally, Songkran in Thailand during April is the celebration of the Thai New Year. People celebrate by throwing water and talcum powder at each other in the streets and there are many festivals taking place. During this time, there are also numerous LGBTQ+ events, in particular the GCircuit festival in Bangkok and TropOut in Phuket.

Its tourism industry has been courting gay travelers for a long time, and the country is home to many robust LGBTQ communities. It’s known for its vibrant gay nightlife, with plenty of options throughout the country. Although the main gay scene is concentrated in Bangkok, the equally beautiful getaways in Phuket, Koh Samet, and Pattaya are also worth a visit for LGBTQ travelers. If you’re traveling to Thailand as a gay couple, with your gay friends, or by yourself, you can expect a fun, welcoming atmosphere and loads of great parties.

Gay in Thailand: is Thailand gay friendly?

gay tours of thailand

Thailand is a very friendly country for LGBTQ travelers. Public displays of affection are traditionally seen as taboo and this extends to heterosexual couples as well. You’re unlikely to be harassed for displaying affection, but avoiding it is generally seen as more respectful. While gay travelers will generally have no issues traveling here, LGBTQ rights in Thailand for locals remain a work in progress. As of 2022, transgender people cannot legally change their gender, while the recognition of same-sex marriages or civil unions is still in the works. LGBTQ people also face barriers in many employment areas, despite anti-discrimination laws passed in 2015. The Bangkok Rainbow Organisation and Thai Transgender Alliance are two organizations working to change that, and they can also assist you if you run into any trouble during your trip.

Where are the best gay areas in Thailand?

gay tours of thailand

You’ll find the biggest and most visible gay district in Thailand in its capital city, Bangkok. The thriving gay scene is a main attraction, and it’s a great place to meet LGBTQ locals and travelers. Phuket is one of Thailand’s best islands and is also home to some of its best gay hotspots. Pattaya is well known for its nightlife and beautiful beaches, and Koh Samet is the perfect spot for partying on the beach.

Gay bars and clubs in Bangkok

gay tours of thailand

Bangkok’s main gay district is based around two streets: Silom Soi 2 and Silom Soi 4. Silom Soi 2 is where you’ll find gay clubs and parties, and Silom Soi 4 is where you’ll find more relaxed bars and dining options. These are, by far, the best spots for meeting LGBTQ people in Thailand. Bangkok is Thailand’s most popular tourist destination and has numerous amazing attractions outside of its gay nightlife. The Grand Palace Museum, Wat Arun Ratchawararam Temple, and Erawan Shrine are just some of the great places you can visit during the day.

Pride Bar & Restaurant

gay tours of thailand

Pride Bar & Restaurant is the successor to the famous Telephone Bar, which sadly had to close in 2021. Pride Restaurant, right next door, bought it out and expanded its restaurant to include a gay bar that’s always packed. It has a lovely seating area outside where you can watch crowds roam up and down Silom Soi 4. The restaurant serves a delicious selection of Thai and international dishes.

The Stranger Bar

gay tours of thailand

The Stranger Bar is the finest spot in Bangkok for drag shows, and it’s right next door to Pride Bar. You’ll find queens putting on incredible performances every night of the week, and the shows are always fun and engaging. The show usually starts at 10:30 pm, and there are multiple short performances running each night. There’s no entry fee to get in, but you do need to order some drinks. It’s a very popular spot and not too big, so you might have to queue for a while before you can get in. But don’t worry, it’s well worth the wait.

Balcony Bar

gay tours of thailand

Across the road from Pride Bar and The Stranger Bar, you’ll find one of the best karaoke bars in Bangkok. It bills itself as “The Fun Pub,” and there’s certainly plenty of fun to be had while drinking delicious cocktails and belting out your favorite karaoke hits. Balcony also frequently hosts cabaret shows and go-go dancers, with shows starting at 10:30 pm. If the lines are a little too long for your tastes at The Stranger Bar, Balcony is a great alternative.

DJ Station is one of the busiest, most popular gay clubs in Bangkok, located at one end of Silom Soi 2. Silom Soi 2 is home to most of Bangkok’s gay clubs, and the whole street is almost like a club complex, so you need to pay to get into the street itself. The club starts filling up at around 11:30 pm, and things kick off at midnight with an electric drag queen lip-sync show. The club is spread across three floors, and there are more relaxed lounge areas around the dance floor. Since the club attracts a huge number of people, you might want to avoid going on a Saturday night if you don’t like dealing with large crowds.

Gay bars and clubs in Phuket

gay tours of thailand

Phuket has the second biggest gay scene in Thailand (next to Bangkok). You’ll find most gay bars and clubs concentrated in Patong, a beach resort on the west coast of the island. In addition to the exceptionally lively bars, Phuket is home to many beautiful beaches and attractions, such as the Big Buddha, the historic Phuket Old Town, and the Wat Chalong Buddhist temple.

Located in Phuket’s Paradise Complex, the ZAG Club is one of Phuket’s most popular gay hotspots. It’s divided into a more laid-back bar/lounge area, dance floors, and an exclusive VIP area. There’s also a terrace bar that spills out onto the street. It’s open from 8 pm to 2 am, and happy hour is between 8 pm and 10 pm.

Connect Bar & Restaurant

gay tours of thailand

Connect Bar & Restaurant is located right in the heart of the Paradise Complex. It’s one of the most convenient places to meet gay people in Phuket. You’ll find a lot of travelers here, as it’s part of the popular Connect Guesthouse. Buffet nights on Thursdays and Sundays are a particular favorite.

Tangmo Club

gay tours of thailand

Tangmo Club has plenty of entertainment on offer every night. This club features drag queens, cabaret performers, comedians, and more. Performers here are highly trained and deliver exceptional performances night after night. Inside, it’s cozy and dimly lit, perfect for settling in and enjoying a show. On the other hand, the outdoor terrace is great for people-watching fellow visitors in the Paradise Complex. Tangmo Club is open from 10 pm to 2 am every day.

Gay clubs and bars in Koh Samet

gay tours of thailand

Koh Samet is often called Thailand’s “Gay Island.” Its proximity to Bangkok has helped it develop a vibrant gay scene. There aren’t any gay-specific bars and clubs, but there are numerous gay-popular spots where you can meet LGBTQ travelers and locals. Koh Samet is also home to stunning beaches and world-class resorts.

Tubtim Resort

gay tours of thailand

Tubtim Resort is the daytime hangout for gay travelers in Koh Samet. This resort has a fantastic restaurant that serves international and Thai cuisine. One reason many visitors love Tubtim is that it allows them to bring their own alcohol. But don’t worry, the bar has a wide selection of drinks and cocktails for you to choose from. It has plenty of seating on the beach, so you can soak up the sun and get some fresh air.

Silver Sands

gay tours of thailand

This beachfront dance party is the highlight of Koh Samet’s gay nightlife. It’s particularly busy on weekends when tourists and Bangkok locals head to the island to party all night long. Located on Sai Keaw Beach, Silver Sands has benches for outdoor seating and plays a range of international and Thai music to keep the party going. It’s part of the Silver Sands Hotel, and in the daytime, you’ll find yourself in the mood to swim and sunbathe on the lovely Sai Keaw beach.

Just under 2 hours from Bangkok by car, Pattaya is a popular beach resort destination with a few excellent hotspots for gay travelers. The Jomtien Complex is more laid-back, with cozy bars and relaxed entertainment. Boyztown has a club vibe, with lots of go-go dancers shows and drag performances. Sunee Plaza is a “seedier” part of the city that was once one of its most well-known gay areas. The area had a number of closures in recent years, but some clubs are still going strong. Note that Pattaya is one of the main spots for gay sex workers in Thailand. Be aware that sex work is illegal in Thailand, though in reality, this is rarely enforced. Most importantly, you should always ask for a photo ID if you have any doubts about whether or not someone is over 18.

Jomtien Complex

gay tours of thailand

The Jomtien Complex, near Dongtan Beach, is home to a number of gay bars. They tend to be a little more laid-back than other bars in the area. There are also a few bars hosting cabaret shows and live performances. The Blue Hawaiian is a great low-key option where you can easily hold a conversation without having to compete with loud music. Dorothy’s Bar is a fantastic show venue, which hosts cabaret shows and other live events. There’s also a karaoke section, so when there are no performers, the patrons become the evening’s entertainment. Many establishments, like Adonis Bar and Angel Bar, are open-air bars, perfect for warm evenings.

Castro Bar is one of the best entertainment venues in Pattaya. Located in the Boyztown district, it hosts drag shows, cabarets, and similar events. There are usually several shows each night featuring incredible dancers and hilarious comedians. The bar opens at around 4 pm and the entertainment starts at 11 pm. There’s also a patio bar that looks out onto the street.

Other Boyztown bars

gay tours of thailand

You’ll find a mix of different cabaret bars, drag shows, and go-go bars in Boyztown. They’re all located quite close together, so many visitors will visit multiple bars over the course of one evening. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the first gay venue to open in Pattaya, and it’s still going strong decades later. Its cabaret performances usually start at midnight. Cupidol is a go-go dance bar that hosts regular entertainment along with special events.

White Party Bangkok is internationally renowned, so make sure you get your tickets early, especially if you’re after one of its VIP passes.

G Circuit Songkran

Thailand’s Sin City beach is once again living up to its lascivious reputation , as yet another couple of tourists were caught taking advantage of the picturesque shore as the spot for a passionate round of lovemaking.

Months after another couple outraged officials with some sandy hanky panky, the latest naked pair were spotted blatantly fornicating under the streetlights at Pattaya Beach, a popular tourist destination dubbed “Sin City” for its bawdy bars and massage parlors.

The couple seemed unbothered in the 1-minute video as other beachgoers — seen sitting just yards away from the pair — look on and laugh.

“Is this normal in Pattaya?” the original video, shared to Facebook Wednesday, read.

It provoked shocked comments such as: “Why not go to a hotel with such performances?” and “What kind of people are these?”

The perverted rendevous occurred on a strip of Jomtien Beach, home to high-rise condominiums, hotels and restaurants, and not far from the Pattaya Water Sports Complex, according to Pattaya Mail.

The popular strip is flooded with locals and tourists at all hours of the day and late into the night, including the estimated 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. timeframe police estimate the sex-crazed pair engaged in their affair.

It is also a well-known spot for public lovemaking, despite such acts being illegal.

The city’s Tourist Police is investigating the incident, but fear the perverted pair may be long gone — while the video was only shared this week, it appears to have been filmed as long as three months earlier, Khaosod English reported.

Two people having sex on Pattaya beach at night while other people nearby watch in outrage.

Tents were seen strewn near the part of the beach the pair was seen lying on, which lifeguard officials told police were removed in December.

Sexual acts in public are illegal in Thailand — and are punishable by up to five years behind bars — but the rules have done little to stop offenders from blatantly engaging in the past.

In May of last year, a woman was caught performing oral sex on a man under a street light on a public sidewalk as workers set up a stage nearby.

Aerial view of Pattaya Beach.

Months earlier, a “disgusting foreigner” was caught having sex with a prostitute during an all-night booze bender on Christmas Day.

The blond tourist even waved to a bystander who had stopped to film the salacious sexcapade on his phone.

Singapore Has Taylor Swift to Itself This Week, and the Neighbors Are Complaining

The country is defending paying the pop star to play nowhere else in Southeast Asia. Thailand’s prime minister said the price was up to $3 million per show.

Taylor Swift sings onstage wearing a silver costume and knee high boots.

Taylor Swift has descended on Southeast Asia, or one small part of it at least: All of her six sold-out shows are in Singapore, the region’s wealthiest nation.

Many of her fans in this part of the world, which is home to more than 600 million people, are disappointed. But the Singapore leg of Ms. Swift’s wildly popular Eras Tour , which began last weekend and ends on Saturday, is a soft power coup and a boost for the country’s post-pandemic economic recovery.

The shows — and the undisclosed price that Singapore paid to host them — have also generated diplomatic tension with two of its neighbors, Thailand and the Philippines.

Last month, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin of Thailand said publicly that Singapore had paid Ms. Swift up to $3 million per show on the condition that she play nowhere else in Southeast Asia. A lawmaker in the Philippines later said that was not “what good neighbors do.”

Singapore pushed back. First its culture minister said the actual value of the exclusivity deal — which he declined to name — was “ nowhere as high .” The country’s former ambassador at large later called the criticism “ sour grapes .” And on Tuesday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong told reporters that he did not see the deal as diplomatically “unfriendly.”

But that was no solace to dejected fans.

“I sometimes think ‘When will I get to experience this?’” said Sherin Nya Tamara, 26, a Swift fan in Jakarta, Indonesia, who has liked the singer since 2011 but has never seen her perform live. “I was hoping there would be additional dates and that Jakarta would be included, but nope.”

At a time when Southeast Asian governments are dealing with tensions over the South China Sea and the fallout from a brutal war in Myanmar, among other serious issues, the controversy over Ms. Swift’s Singapore shows is “kind of refreshing,” said Susan Harris Rimmer, a law professor who has studied soft power in the region.

“It’s nice to see them arguing about something this fun, I guess, instead of really, deeply difficult things,” added Professor Harris Rimmer, who teaches at Griffith University in Australia. “But it does show there is tension and jealousy and rivalry.”

Ms. Swift’s concerts in Singapore, which follow her stops in Japan and Australia , would have been a big deal anyway. But they took on geopolitical overtones last month, when Mr. Srettha said at a business forum that Singapore had paid the artist as much as $3 million per show in order to guarantee that they would be her only tour stops in Southeast Asia.

Mr. Srettha said that he had learned the details of Singapore’s grant to the artist from the concert promoter, AEG Presents. Representatives for the promoter and for Ms. Swift did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.

An exclusivity deal around a concert, a kind of noncompete agreement known as a “radius clause,” is standard practice in the music industry, said Susan Abramovitch, the head of the entertainment and sports law division at the international law firm Gowling WLG.

“That being said, this territorial exclusivity is more typically measured in hundreds of miles from a city rather than covering entire neighboring countries,” she said, adding that the scope of the Singapore deal was a kind of “Taylor-esque magnification” of the industry standard.

It hasn’t been received well outside Singapore.

Late last month, a lawmaker in the Philippines generated headlines by saying that he had asked the country’s Department of Foreign Affairs to discuss the exclusivity clause with the Singaporean government, saying that it had come at the expense of neighboring countries.

The lawmaker, Rep. Joey Salceda, said this week that he had raised the issue after realizing how difficult and expensive it would be for Filipinos, including members of his own staff, to attend the concerts.

“ASEAN’s core principles are solidarity and consensus,” he said in an interview, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. “What happened? They even used their tourism board to block other nations.”

Asked on Tuesday how much the grant was worth, the Singaporean government did not directly address the question. But the Tourism Board and the Culture Ministry said in a joint statement that Ms. Swift’s concerts, for which more than 300,000 tickets had been sold, would likely “generate significant benefits” for the domestic economy.

Prime Minister Lee was also asked about the grant on Tuesday at an ASEAN conference in Australia. He said it had been funded by a post-Covid tourism recovery effort and that he did not see the exclusivity clause as being “unfriendly” to other countries.

“If we had not made such an arrangement, would she have come to someplace else in Southeast Asia or more places in Southeast Asia?” he said, speaking in Melbourne. “Maybe, maybe not.”

News of the regional backlash to the grant was reported earlier by The Wall Street Journal , The Diplomat and other news outlets.

Professor Harris Rimmer said that, financial incentives aside, Singapore is a logical place for Swift to play in Southeast Asia, in part because it is safe for young female fans and has excellent transport links to the rest of the region. She said Ms. Swift’s glamorous mystique also fits nicely with Singapore’s efforts to promote itself as the “glamour kitten of Asia.”

“I don’t think she needs Singapore’s money, at this point,” she added.

Some Swifties have made their peace with the singer’s limited itinerary in their region. Mostly.

Jose Bunachita, 30, a writer in the Philippine city of Cebu, said that he saw Ms. Swift in Japan last month, and that his 11-day trip there had cost around $1,500. “I had the time of my life singing my heart out,” he said.

Still, he said, “I also feel like it would have been more of a fun experience if a majority of the concertgoers had been fellow Filipino Swifties.”

Porn Star Rocco Siffredi’s Netflix Bio-Series ‘Supersex’ Is More Tedious Than Sexy: TV Review

Supersex. (L to R) Alessandro Borghi as Rocco, Gaia Messerklinger as Moana in episode 104 of Supersex. Cr. Lucia Iuorio/Netflix © 2024

Loosely based on the experiences of real-life porn sensation Rocco Siffredi , known as the “Italian Stallion,” Netflix ’s “ Supersex ” isn’t actually very sexy at all. Instead, the seven-part series, created by Francesca Manieri, is a tale about family, masculinity and toxic bonds. While the show, which stars Alessandro Borghi in the lead role, has some interesting chapters, the surrealist elements — including some hallucinatory moments and the bizarre way some of the sex scenes are filmed — make it more than a biographical account. Instead, it’s an overly complex examination of relationships and the vices people indulge in to escape their emotional turmoil.

Series opener “Superpower” acts mainly as a coming-of-age story. Following Rocco’s retirement news, the show zips back to 1974. Ten-year-old Rocco Tano feels trapped in the impoverished rural town of Ortona and lost in the chaos of his family life. His mother is devoted to his mentally disabled brother Claudio, and Rocco lives in the shadow of his charismatic older half-brother, Tommaso (Adriano Giannini). Tommaso is Rocco’s North Star. He represents a type of freedom and hypermasculinity that appears out of reach for the men of Ortona. Tommaso also has the love of the town’s most stunning woman, Lucia (Jasmine Trinca), which only endears Rocco to him further.

In addition to examining Rocco’s family dynamic, “Supersex” zooms in on his fixation on sex, which begins at a very young age. The series unpacks his crush on Lucia and later his discovery of “Supersex,” a pornography magazine starring Gabriel Pontello. The euphoria from observing and later engaging in sex is a feeling Rocco chases across the next three decades. But his sex work comes at the expense of his mental health. It also destroys the romances and familial bonds he tries to form and maintain.

Despite a lifelong admiration of Tommaso’s machismo, his brother’s treatment of Lucia, who funds their lifestyle through her sex work on the streets of Paris, slowly shifts Rocco’s point of view. An invitation to a sex club awakens previously unknown desires. Becoming a porn star gives him financial security, but his inner turmoil stems from trying to live up to the expectations his family places on him.

“Supersex” dwells far too long on Rocco’s dysfunctional brotherhood with Tommaso, giving the toxic and exhausting connection unneeded exposition. Fewer episodes and less time spent on the self-destructive café manager would have kept the storyline squarely on Rocco’s psyche. Moreover, Manieri positions Lucia’s life as a counternarrative to Rocco’s. As with Rocco’s female co-stars, she isn’t allowed the same agency and status he obtains. Women are sexualized and then vilified for being sexual in the same breath. While Lucia eventually finds herself on a new path, it’s not without suffering and sacrifice, difficulties Rocco never contends with. The pair are an intriguing juxtaposition, but this mirroring gets muddled under their dark pull toward Tommaso. Similarly, Rocco’s enthusiasm for rough sex acts is never fully explored.

Still, “Supersex” makes some smart choices. Intercourse and other types of sex are showcased, of course, but these scenes aren’t gratuitous. Instead, they illustrate Rocco’s emotional state as he deals with loss and yearning or even demonstrate his self-worth.

The penultimate episode, “Resurrection of the Bodies,” is the standout and centers on Rocco’s return to Ortona amid his mother’s illness and one of the biggest highlights of his career, winning best European actor at the Hot d’Or Awards. In 53 minutes, Rocco confronts the effects of shame and how so-called family members react to him when he’s no longer playing by their rules.

Though Rocco’s story is solidly depicted, audiences hoping for a bio-series-type narrative won’t find it here. It’s also worth noting that Netflix offers a dubbed English version, but the show is best viewed in Italian with subtitles. Overall, “Supersex” isn’t just an examination of one man’s life and career but a look at the lives people create, however unconventional, when they dare to move through the world as their most authentic selves.

“Supersex” premieres March 6 on Netflix .

Most travelers will arrive in Bangkok on day one and head to our meeting spot for our 4pm start of our adventure on this day.  This time in Bangkok is a great introduction to the incredible country of Thailand.  During these couple days, we'll really get to know the city by checking out Bangkok's highlights using local tuk-tuks, boats, and trains.  On our second day, we'll take a guided day-trip around the city visiting Wat Pho, Wat Arun, and more.  At night we'll head down the street to check out Silom's famous night market and very lively gay scene.  Bangkok is world famous for many reasons and never disappoints her visitors.

Day 3 brings us to southern Thailand with a quick 1 hour flight and short 15 minute boat ride to the jaw-dropping cliffs and white sand beaches of Railay.  An idyllic paradise surrounded by the perfectly blue waters that have made the Gulf of Thailand famous.   Railay offers hidden lagoons and caves for hikers, beaches for sun-worshippers, and plenty of opportunity to eat great food and meet people from all around the world.  Stay on land, or jump in the water for some snorkeling, or SCUBA diving fun.

On day 6 we travel just 3 hours overland to the well-known resort and nightlife city of Phuket. It’s here you’ll find opportunities to feed wild monkeys, island hop, or get some sun on the local gay beach by day while socializing with people from all over the planet by night.  Phuket is popular day and night and has tonnes of options for both early-risers and late-nighters.  Get your shopping done, check out a cabaret show, relax on the beach, take a cooking class, spend the day at the spa... it's beautiful place to unwind... or windup.

Back to Bangkok!  We fly one hour from Phuket to Bangkok for your chance to stock up on some new outfits or some souvenirs for your boyfriend/mother/bff.  With a city as large as Bangkok we've got lots to explore here before our next couple days of day trips!

We start this day trip by taking a 90 minute ride from Bangkok to the formal capital city of Thailand, Ayutthaya. Here we are hosted by a local Thai guide who will show us the incredible 14th century ruins of this once royal city. Beautifully preserved, these ruins are an amazing showcase of Siam's turbulent history. After our full day of exploring the Ayutthaya area, we head back to into Bangkok for the night.

This is our animal day! We support the ethical treatment and interaction with animals and fully support the works of the Wildlife Friends of Thailand project. We spend a full day at their remote wildlife refuge property, 2.5 hours south of Bangkok feeding, walking and washing elephants, meeting several different species of unique monkeys, bears, and all kinds of exotic creatures! This day will not just allow us the opportunity to get face to face with flying squirrels, jackals, langurs, gibbons, and more, but will also allow us to learn through their stories.  We return to Bangkok this evening to prepare for our journey onwards to Cambodia tomorrow!

It's time to say goodbye-for-now to the 12-day travelers before we jet off on a 1-hour flight to one of the 7 wonders of the world - the famous temples of Angkor!  We'll touch down in the Cambodian city of Siem Reap, home to the spectacular ancient temple complex and a unique city full of new sights and smells.  We'll spend our time here with a local guide who will join us in exploring the beautiful lost city of Angkor.  It's an awe-inspiring experience sure to make everyone at home jealous.

Our trip together comes to an end here in Siem Reap on the 15th day and you're welcome to depart any time on this day, but don't worry, Thailand & Cambodia will be waiting for ya to come back!  We encourage all travelers use Siem Reap's international airport (REP) to head home or onwards to more adventures.

We don't like staying in smelly shacks on our vacations and we're pretty sure you don't either! You work hard to go on vacation and we believe you deserve an enjoyable, comfortable place to wind down at the end of each day. We put a LOT of time into finding the perfect accommodation for your trip. After rigorous wifi signal testing, fluffing pillows, and taking a shower or two, we've narrowed down our favorite properties. Check out our approved accommodation to see where we've stayed in the past and where we'll likely be staying on your trip.

The Amara Hotel will quickly feel like a home away from home, right in the middle of Bangkok. Centrally located in the Silom neighbourhood and minutes from the famous Patpong Night Market and Bangkok's gay area, the Amara is a favorite hotel amongst our guests. Featuring a modern design, a gorgeous rooftop infinity pool, exercise facilities and friendly staff.

This oceanfront property is set against Railay's limestone cliffs and swaying palms. The gorgeous swimming facility features a pool bar with delicious margaritas, friendly staff and the occasional monkey lounging on your room's patio. Bhu Nga Thani provides the tropical paradise you've been waiting for.

Located only a few steps from the beach, X2 Vibe Patong (i.e. formerly known as "The Nap") provides a contemporary facility in the heart of Patong in Phuket. Situated minutes away from the gay area (the Paradise Complex) and Bangla road, you'll find the location of this hotel couldn't be better. Property amenities include a sunny outdoor pool and an exercise facility.

The Sarai Resort is an oasis nestled in the city centre of Siem Reap. With plenty of restaurants and markets only a few minutes away, our choice hotel features a jaw-dropping outdoor pool that'll make you feel like royalty. The fantastic breakfasts are made to order and are the cherry on top of this rare 5-star TripAdvisor rated hotel.

*Please note that due to availability, these exact hotels may not all be available during all DETOURS trips.  However, we will always replace these with similar hotels, and will never downgrade.

Don’t worry about getting chilly, Thailand and Cambodia are tropical countries and the areas that we travel in are warm day and night.  High temperatures of 35C/97F, and lows of 23C/77F can be expected through most of the year.  Even if it rains it’s usually in the afternoon, and these unlikely showers are a refreshing cool-down and make a great excuse to try out your favorite rain dance.

95% of Thailand's and Cambodia's population are Buddhist, which makes for a laid-back, friendly country full of good-karma seekers. Great people that love their food, their king, and of course their international visitors, you’ll be hard-pressed not to make dozens of local friends during your stay. While you’re there, consider learning a few words their language, “Thai”. (Not “Taiwanese”, by the way – that’s from Taiwan) We recommend starting off with “Sawat-dee-khap” (hello), “Khap koon khap” (thank you), and of course “Hat yoo tee-nai khap” (where’s the beach?)

South-east Asia is home to some of the most amazing food on the planet, and it's cheap too!  Detours doesn't believe in limiting your choices by including meals at pre-decided restaurants as part of the trip package.  Instead, we encourage you to explore all of the different restaurant options available to you.  This way you can eat when you want, where you want, with whomever you want, and spend what you want!  Your trip leader definitely has their favorite spots and will be excited to show you all of their favorites in each location, just check with them.

Our advice is simple. Pack your bag, then take half of those things out and leave them back home. It’s common to hear people wishing they’d packed less stuff, but we’ve never heard anyone complain that they didn’t bring enough. Thailand is a very inexpensive country, meaning even if you realize you forget to pack some crucial item you can just pick it up on the trip for half of what it would have cost back home. We'll include some trip-specific packing advice based on expected weather as part of our update email to you, sent 60 days prior to your trip.

ATM withdrawal fees can really add up, and credit cards aren't always accepted at shops and restaurants here, that's why we suggest grabbing some Thai Baht before you arrive to Thailand (around 10,000 THB is a good amount to start with).  Bring your regular ATM card and credit card for additional needs too though. 1000 Thai Baht is worth around $30 USD, so don’t go nuts if your dinner bill costs 200 baht. Relax –that’s about 6 bucks. Your 300 baht, hour-long full body oil massage on the beach? Yeah, that cost less than $10.

Tipping isn’t a native Thai custom, however, it’s become a part of what is expected from travelers. We suggest tipping for services in a similar way as you would in North America; that is, if your dinner bill is 200 baht then we encourage you toss 40 baht in on top of that. That extra bit is extremely appreciated by the local service staff.

We have pretty high standards when it comes to choosing our accommodations, and trust us, we’ve done plenty of room-sniffing, pillow-patting, and bathroom inspections to make sure we stay at quality spots. To be approved as a Detours accommodations provider, a guesthouse must: be locally owned (to support the local community), be in an amazing location (close to the beach and other hot spots), have air conditioning (you can thank us later), AND be gay-owned or gay-friendly.  We won't be staying in 5-star Ritz-Carltons but we also won't subject you to anything we wouldn't want to stay in ourselves.  Clean, comfortable, well-located spots that'll put a smile on your face, you can count on that!

All of our trip leaders are gay, and all certified leaders must undergo a rigorous training routine that includes deep-fried cricket eating, and impromptu dancing tests. Apart from these vital skills, we require our leaders to know their stuff really, really well. Underneath their fun and quirky facades, our guides are experts about all aspects of Thailand and especially the places we visit. Don’t hesitate to ask them to teach you some Thai or question them about a random statue you might see along the way.  Their job is to help ensure that this is your trip of a lifetime by taking the hassle out of your trip and making sure you experience everything you came to Thailand for.

We do absolutely everything possible to avoid needing such a mundane awakening. A world without alarm clocks is one we want to be part of, and your “rise and shine” while in Thailand will come from the sound of crashing waves, an elephant trumpeting, or perhaps even the odd monkey jumping onto the roof of your bungalow.

For many people, their 15 days in Thailand & Cambodia just isn’t enough time. If you’re lucky enough to be able to stay longer, or if you decide to quit your job and become a beach bum in Thailand for the rest of your life, we’d be happy to extend (or cancel!) your return flight. We’ve been all over South-East Asia, so don’t think twice about asking where to go or what to do after your Detours trip is complete.

Our Detours groups are run with a maximum of 15 travelers. Ages of group members vary but around 90% of our travelers are in their 30's, 40's, and 50's.  Whatever the age of the guys on our trips everyone's already got something in common, an exciting new experience in a new country! Each group is led by a Detours trip leader who is there to ensure everything goes off without a hitch, allowing you to focus on having the time of your life!

As we’ve already mentioned, you’ll have a tough time finding a more open-minded and accepting region, and most people don’t have any issue at all with homosexuality. That said, they are a modest people, and public displays of affection (whether gay or straight) are generally frowned upon. In respect for their local culture we usually suggest keeping your excitement and affection for your partner to more private locations.

No problem! Don’t worry, our trip will provide plenty of chances to meet great people both inside and outside of our group, including other solos. As far as your accommodations go, you’ve got two choices. We can either pair you up with another group solo member in a two-bed room, or you can have your own room for a reasonable surcharge.

Thailand & Cambodia use a "type A" and "type B" plug, the same as North America and several other places in the world. The voltage is 220V with 50 Hz frequency. These days, the majority of items that are plugged into an outlet are built to handle varying voltage and frequency levels, but just to be sure, we suggest checking your item for its acceptable range.

What's included? • All taxes • All land and sea transfers • 3 domestic flights within Thailand & Cambodia • Accommodations for your 15-day Detours experience • All full breakfasts • Group travel within Thailand & Cambodia • Full day Bangkok and temples day tour • Full day visit to local Elephant sanctuary • Full day trip to ancient ruins of Ayutthaya • 2 days at Angkor Wat temples including entrance and local guide • Welcome dinner and drinks • Knowledgeable and fun Detours leader •

What isn't included? • Meals and drinks outside of those listed above • Activities outside of the ones listed above • International Airfare • Optional Gratuities •

Additional spending budget?   Your big-ticket items are included through the trip, but you'll want to budget for additional spending such as additional meals, drinks, shopping, activities, etc. These costs can vary dramatically with differing personal habits but we suggest expecting to spend an additional $700 USD at the lower end for the more budget-conscious and $1200 USD at the higher end for the splurgers.  We suggest arriving to Thailand with approximately 10,000 local Thai Baht, and $100 US Dollars (for Cambodia).

Trip Reviews

Justin s. - usa, august 2, 2019.

I have completed two Detours adventures and I give them my highest recommendation. The hotels, activities, and trip leaders are all top notch. The trips provide both structure and flexibility. With Detours, I boated to exotic islands in Thailand, zip-lined in the jungle, saw an authentic flamenco show up close in Spain, and completed many other unique and stimulating experiences. The trip leaders act as traveling concierges - answering all questions and arranging for private or small-group activities upon request.

Detours has been my go to choice for unique travel experiences for the last 5 years. My 6th foray into the World of Detours was a trip I had waited 5 years to take, because of time restrictions at work.  And it was definitely worth the wait! The diverse chaos and sensory overload of Bangkok to the quiet nights under the stars in Khao Yai, the contrasts and diversity of this stunning country offers something for everyone. This trip gave a sense of discovery to not only a new country, but to one's self. Learning one's own limits, and then pushing them was possible here with no judgement. The people are so helpful and polite in every situation. They have an eagerness to please in any capacity.  Each hotel selected by Detours was first rate! Luxurious pools and spas, exquisite restaurants and night life were always just a few steps away.  The beaches of Railay and Phuket are in a league unto themselves.  All the impossible stories of this country are true, and then some. My travel companions were as diverse as this trip. Close and lasting friendships were forged with ease. That, I have found, is a pleasant byproduct of the Detours experience. Our trip Leader Shane has a wealth of knowledge of this country that he eagerly shared. His guidance and openness to try new activities made for a very enjoyable time together. If you haven't experienced Detours yet, just do it. Do it now!

When I signed up with Detours, I knew that I would have quite the experience in Thailand: hotels, transportation, and a knowledgeable guide to ensure that I got a "taste" of Thailand. I had no idea that I would also meet an incredible group of 15 other male travelers! Together we laughed, toured, experienced, discussed, and drank our way through temples, beaches, boats, and cities. Our trip leader could not have cared more for each one of us, as individuals. Shane, you truly brought the heart to this adventure. Thanks, Detours!

I had a great time traveling to Thailand with Detours. I went to places and did things that definitely were not on my radar but that I absolutely loved. Shane, our group leader, was a joy. He really made the trip very special thanks to both his expertise in the country and his positive attitude!

Just wrapped up my 3rd trip with Detours - Thailand January 2018 - and I'm ready to sign up for my 4th trip later this year. The trips continue to surprise me because of the life experiences as well as some of the lifelong bonds you create with some of your fellow travelers. I'm a true believer that no one would regret booking a trip with Detours.
