Common Errors/Mistakes in English

Visited vs Have Visited vs Had Visited: How to Use Them Correctly

6 years ago 66.6K Views

Common Errors in English Sentences : Using correct tense an important part of every business communication as it reflects your personality, especially when you’re communicating with someone who is well-versed in English language.

Are you a non-native English speaker, confused between “visited vs. have visited”? This post will help you understand the grammar rules once and for all.

Using correct tense is an important part of every business communication as it reflects your personality, especially when you’re communicating with someone who is well-versed in the English language.

It’s quite common to find many non-native English users confusing “past tense” with “present perfect tense”.

So, let’s take a look at some examples below:

❎ I have visited the doctor this past week. ( wrong )

❎ Have you met your mother yesterday? ( wrong )

So, what do you think is wrong with these examples?

Explanation : This is a pretty common error in Asian countries where English communication is largely affected by their mother tongue. Many non-English languages carry grammar rules which can be very different from the grammar rules we follow in the English language.

In the English language, when you describe an event that occurs in the past, i.e. yesterday or last week, you essentially use the “past simple” tense of the verb.

In the examples above, “yesterday” and “this past week” are both “adverbs”, meaning they define the nature of the verb that precedes them.

In the first example, the speaker talks about an event (visiting the doctor) with information about its occurrence (this past week).

Please, note that the “timing of the event” (or time adverb) is of utmost importance here, which decides the “tense form” the verb must take in the sentence.

Here, “this past week” refers to an event that clearly occurred in the past. Therefore, the event itself (visiting the doctor) must take “the past simple tense”.

Hence, it would be right to express yourself in the following way.

I visited the doctor this past week.

Similarly, the correct version of the second example would be:

Did you visit your mother yesterday?

To make it even clearer for you, here’s how you should break the sentences to understand which tense they should take.

I + visited + the doctor + this past week

Visited = the “past simple tense” of the verb “visit”.

This past week = the adverb denoting “timing of the event”.

Know Your Adverbs

It’s important to know your adverbs well enough in order to form correct sentences, using the appropriate tense.

Let’s consider a few examples with different adverbs.

Now, Currently, Right Now, Today

You can use either present continuous or present perfect tense with these verbs. However, you can never use “past simple” with these.

For example, the following examples would sound plain stupid:

❎ He was unemployed currently. ( incorrect )

❎ He’s unemployed currently. ( correct )

❎ Was he sick right now? ( incorrect )

❎ Is he sick right now? ( correct )

❎ I came here today. ( incorrect )

❎ I’ve come here today. ( correct )

However, there are some “adverbs” that can take both “past tense” as well as “present perfect tense” depending on the context.

Here are Some Examples:

✅ Example #1: I have purchased a CD player recently. (present perfect tense)

✅ Example #2: I purchased that CD player recently. (past simple tense)

Oxford Dictionary defines “recently” as an adverb denoting “at a recent time” and “not long ago”.

Explanation:

In Example #1, we are using a perfect tense in order to name the action as the source of the present state. Whereas, in Example #2, we are using a past tense since the action is one of a sequence of past actions, a narrative.

Please, keep in mind the present perfect is a present tense, which makes a statement about the situation at the time of speaking.

However, the following example would be incorrect.

❎ I have purchased that CD recently.

This is because when you are talking about purchasing “that CD”, you have presumably purchased it in the past. Therefore, you should rather say, “I purchased that CD recently”.

Visited vs Had Visited

Believe it or not, many non-native English users find it hard to differentiate between past simple tense and past perfect tense. They often wonder if the two could be used interchangeably.

The truth is both these tenses offer different contexts to the event. Take a look at the following examples:

  • Example #1 : I visited my doctor yesterday.
  • Example #2 : I had visited my doctor yesterday.

Which of the above examples is correct?

Answer : The first one.

We use past tense when the time is specified, e.g. yesterday.

We use past perfect tense only when we refer to another event (a concurrent event) in the past. In other words, it must carry some context – “what happened after you visited the doctor yesterday?”

For example:

I had watched television yesterday when it was time to go to bed.✅ Activity in the past = “it was time”.

✅ Activity before the past = “had watched television”.

I had watched television yesterday, by the time my parents came back.

✅ Activity in the past = “my parents came back”.

In short, without any context to “the other activity” that was done after watching television, using “had watched” would be incorrect.

Therefore, if you only mean to mention “watching television” in the past, simply say, “I watched television yesterday”.

I hope this helps. Please, let me know if you have any questions.

Pope Francis visits hospital for tests as he battles the flu, Vatican says

February 28, 2024 / 7:09 AM EST / CBS/AP

Vatican City — Pope Francis, who has been suffering from the flu , was brought to a hospital in central Rome after the papal audience on Wednesday, arriving at the Gemelli Hospital on Tiber Island in a small white Fiat 500 and leaving again under escort in the same car after a short period. The Vatican said after the visit that he was taken to the hospital "for some diagnostic tests," after which he returned to the Vatican.

The 87-year-old pope was pushed in a wheelchair into the audience hall at the Vatican earlier in the day, appearing weary as he dropped heavily into his seat. In recent weeks he has walked the short distance to his chair, but he has been struggling with mild flu symptoms over the past week.

The pope also canceled appointments Saturday and Monday due to the flu, but appeared as usual for the Sunday blessing from a window overlooking St. Peter's Square.

VATICAN-RELIGION-POPE-AUDIENCE

Last week, Francis coughed repeatedly during Ash Wednesday services that he presided over at a Roman church, and opted not to participate in the traditional procession that inaugurates the church's Lenten season.

This time of year in 2020, just as the coronavirus pandemic was starting to hit Italy, Francis also suffered a bad cold that forced him to cancel several days of official audiences and his participation in the Vatican's annual spiritual retreat. The Vatican had already scrubbed the retreat for this year in favor of personal spiritual exercises

The Argentine pope had part of one lung removed as a young man because of a respiratory infection, and in 2021 had a chunk of his colon removed because of an intestinal inflammation. He has used a wheelchair and cane since last year because of strained knee ligaments and a small knee fracture that have made walking and standing difficult.

Vatican Pool Images 2024

The pope used his brief words at the end of Wednesday's audience to mark the 25th anniversary of the ratification of the Anti-Personnel Mines Convention, expressing his "closeness to the numerous victims of these insidious devices that remind us of the dramatic cruelty of war."

He also appealed for peace in the Middle East and Ukraine, and prayed for the victims of attacks in Burkina Faso and Haiti.

At the end of the audience, the pope spent about an hour greeting the faithful from his wheelchair, stopping to talk, bless babies and exchange gifts.

Biden and Trump trade accusations at southern border

The two leading presidential candidates blasted each other on immigration, a likely preview of the campaign to come.

BROWNSVILLE, Tex. — President Biden and former president Donald Trump visited separate Texas border towns 300 miles apart on Thursday, blaming each other for a surge in illegal immigration and seeking to take the offensive on an issue that is shaping up to be a critical and volatile factor in this year’s presidential contest.

2024 presidential election

he visits

Biden used his visit to Brownsville, a Democratic stronghold, to blame Trump, the leading Republican presidential candidate , for killing a bipartisan border bill that would have provided $20 billion to hire thousands of new Border Patrol agents and asylum officers and increase detention capacity. The measure also would have included a trigger mechanism to effectively shut down the border, which Biden said he would have been willing to invoke.

Biden said the bill was on its way to passage until Trump “came along and said, ‘Don’t do that, it will benefit the incumbent.’” The president added sarcastically, “It’s a hell of a way to do business in the United States of America.”

Addressing Republican members of Congress, Biden urged them to “show a little spine” and demonstrate independence from Trump. “Let’s remember who we work for, for God’s sake,” Biden said. He ended by addressing Trump directly: “Instead of playing politics with this issue, join me — or I’ll join you — in telling the Congress to pass this bipartisan border security bill. We can do it together.”

About 300 miles away in Eagle Pass, Trump renewed his embrace of a tough-on-immigration message that was central to his political rise in 2016 and that he has made a centerpiece of his third presidential campaign. “This is a Joe Biden invasion, this is a Biden invasion,” the former president said of the influx of illegal migrants.

“The United States is being overrun by the Biden migrant crime,” Trump added. “It’s a new form of vicious violation to our country.” Experts say most of the evidence suggests that undocumented immigrants do not cause more crime.

The remarkable split-screen — the presidential contenders each delivered their speeches at about the same time — provided a preview of what could be a long and bitter general election campaign. Biden took office announcing his determination to handle immigration more humanely than Trump, whose rhetoric on migrants was often incendiary. But he has faced periodic images of chaos at the border during his presidency, and in recent weeks he has taken a harder line.

Ahead of his remarks, Biden received a briefing from Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In each session, presenters highlighted how few resources they have to address the surge of migration at the border, the flow of fentanyl and the need to process asylum claims.

Biden, in response, continually stressed that the bipartisan border security bill would have allowed for the hiring of significantly more personnel and help alleviate each agency’s problems.

Biden, who polls show faces widespread disapproval of his handling of immigration, has in recent weeks tried to take control of the issue by reminding voters that he embraced the bipartisan immigration measure and its tough enforcement provisions. Republican lawmakers had demanded border security measures as part of a sweeping aid bill for Ukraine and Israel, but they refused to back the package after Trump said on Truth Social that enacting it would be “another Gift to the Radical Left Democrats.”

Trump has long made immigration the focus of his “America First” agenda. He campaigned in 2016 on building a U.S.-Mexico border wall and has vowed to enact “the largest domestic deportation operation in American history” in a second term. He has repeatedly blamed Biden for a record number of apprehensions since 2021.

Trump has also used dehumanizing language to describe undocumented immigrants, suggesting that they are waging an “invasion” of the United States and accusing them of “poisoning the blood of our country,” prompting civil rights activists and historians to compare his language to Nazi rhetoric.

On Thursday, the former president cast undocumented immigrants as deeply alien. “We have languages coming into our country, we have nobody that even speaks those languages,” he said. “They’re truly foreign languages, nobody speaks them. They’re pouring into our country and they’re bringing with them tremendous problems, including medical problems, as you know.”

Biden and Trump chose border cities for their Thursday appearances that reflect their dueling approaches to immigration. Brownsville is in sync with Democrats’ traditional approach of balancing border security with humanitarian considerations. Eagle Pass, by contrast, has become a symbol of Republican defiance against Biden’s handling of immigration. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) seized a park in the city earlier this year, shutting out U.S. Border Patrol agents who had long used it as a staging point.

Illegal border crossings soared in the months after Biden took office, signaling a more relaxed policy and immediately rolling back many Trump-era restrictions. As immigration surged, Biden warned that he would still enforce immigration laws, and he temporarily kept in place a Trump pandemic policy known as Title 42 that allowed authorities to quickly expel border crossers.

Even so, the number of people taken into custody by the U.S. Border Patrol has reached the highest levels in the agency’s 100-year history under Biden, averaging 2 million per year.

In the U.S. interior, the Biden administration has said that ICE agents should not arrest someone just for being undocumented, to prevent longtime residents from being deported. Officials say they are deporting or removing record numbers of border crossers and prioritizing the removal of serious offenders. Many migrants say they are surrendering to seek protection in the United States and permission to work.

Biden laid the blame for the demise of the bipartisan border bill at the feet of Trump and his Republican allies.

“I want the people to understand clearly what happened here: This bill was in the United States Senate, was on its way to being passed, and it was derailed by rank partisan politics,” Biden said. “The U.S. Senate needs to reconsider this bill, and those senators who oppose it need to set politics aside and pass it on the merits, not whether it’s going to benefit one party or the other party.”

In Eagle Pass, Trump, alongside Abbott, received a briefing on Operation Lone Star, Abbott’s state-led border crackdown. He then took a tour of Shelby Park and walked toward the Rio Grande, the river separating the United States and Mexico. People across the border shouted his name as he took the tour.

Trump praised Texas’ immigration policies, while criticizing Democratic governors in Arizona and California for not doing enough to secure the border.

Trump continued to paint undocumented immigrants as violent, describing them as “coming from jails and they’re coming from prisons and they’re coming from mental institutions.”

Most of those arrested at the southern border do not have criminal convictions , federal data show.

A February Gallup survey found that voters ranked immigration as the single most important problem facing the country, followed by the government, the economy and inflation. A Marquette Law School national poll this month found 53 percent of registered voters saying Trump would do a better job handling the issue, while 25 percent said Biden would.

Frustrated by Congress’s inaction, Biden has been considering executive actions that could limit unauthorized migration and restrict the asylum process, according to administration officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. But he did not announce any new actions Thursday, and it is not clear if the White House will be able to identify actions the president can take without congressional authorization.

Many Democratic operatives concede that it would be difficult for Biden to completely upend the political dynamic on immigration. But the White House hopes that his tougher stance, and his repeated reminders that he was eager to sign a border enforcement bill that Trump torpedoed, can at a minimum blunt Republicans’ advantage on the issue.

Trump’s immigration platform includes reinstating a travel ban from his previous presidential term that restricted people from several Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. The Trump campaign has also said he would sign an executive order that would withhold passports, Social Security numbers and other government benefits from the children of undocumented immigrants.

While Biden has taken political hits on immigration since becoming president, Trump also faced a backlash during his own time in the White House for some of his harder-hitting policies. As president, Trump signed executive orders to enact his travel ban, but it faced numerous court challenges and was significantly reduced in scope. His administration also drew fire for a policy of separating migrant families, which was seen even by some conservatives as unduly harsh.

Trump made building a border wall a central promise of his 2016 campaign, and his administration built more than 450 miles of new border fencing at a cost of $11 billion. Despite that construction, illegal border crossings have surged from 500,000 per year in 2020 to more than 2 million last year.

In Thursday’s appearance at Eagle Pass, the former president said that he had spoken to the parents of Laken Hope Riley , a Georgia nursing student who was allegedly killed by Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan migrant. U.S. government records show Ibarra came to the country in 2022 after crossing the border illegally. Riley’s death is one of several cases in recent years that Republican politicians have highlighted to depict migrants as dangerous.

“The monster charged in the death is an illegal alien migrant, who was led into our country, and released into our communities by Crooked Joe Biden,” Trump said. “Joe Biden will never say Laken Riley’s name, but we will say it.”

President Biden squared off against former President Donald Trump on Thursday on one of the issues expected to dominate the 2024 presidential election: immigration.

Both Biden and Trump visited two Texas border communities a few hundred miles apart that have been grappling with large numbers of migrants seeking asylum. Biden went to Brownsville, and Trump to Eagle Pass .

The trip was heavy on symbolism and short on new ideas to tackle the issue. Trump sought to paint a picture of uncontrolled crime and violence, which he blamed on Biden — while Biden sought to show he had agreed to a get-tough bill, blaming Trump and his Republican allies in Congress for blocking it.

It's only the second time during his presidency that Biden has been to the border. The trip comes as Biden goes on the offensive, trying to turn the tables on an issue that has been a liability for him.

Only 29% of respondents in a recent NPR/PBS NewsHour /Marist poll said they approve of the way Biden is handling immigration.

Biden is trying to flip the script on this issue

Biden met with Border Patrol agents and local leaders in Brownsville as he blamed House Republicans for failing to pass border funding and policy changes that the community has been seeking.

Biden's new move is playing offense on border politics. But will voters be swayed?

Biden has said Trump saw a political advantage for his party to block bipartisan legislation that would have tightened rules for asylum, expanded detention facilities and provided more money to hire more border agents. Had the legislation passed, it would have helped Biden show he was willing to get tough on the issue.

On Thursday, he urged Republicans to revive the package, and wrapped up his remarks by inviting Trump to work with him — something that is highly unlikely to happen in this election year.

"We can do it together. You know — and I know — it's the toughest, most efficient, most effective border security bill this country has ever seen. So instead of playing politics with the issue, why don't we just get together and get it done?" Biden said.

Trump sees the border as a winning issue for him

Trump — the front-runner in the race to be the Republican nominee in November — announced his trip to the border first. His team said Biden had chased him to the border and said that strategy would backfire.

Trump went to Eagle Pass, a community where the state government has been trying to play a bigger role in enforcement, and highlighted recent crimes committed by migrants in major cities.

Trump blamed Biden for the d eath of a 22-year-old nursing student in Georgia . An undocumented Venezuelan immigrant has been arrested for the crime.

"I spoke to her parents yesterday. They're incredible people. They're devastated beyond belief. But she was beautiful, just so beautiful in so many ways. And brutally assaulted, horrifically beaten," Trump said.

Biden's campaign said Trump was fear mongering and said that violent crime had fallen during Biden's time in office — something the White House highlighted with police chiefs the day before the border visit.

"All he cares about is stirring up hate, stirring up division ... going even further than the extremism that we saw when he last held power," said Michael Tyler, a Biden spokesperson.

The stakes for both leaders are high

Polls show a majority of Americans trust Republicans more than Democrats on securing the border.

A new Monmouth University poll found that 53% of respondents support building a border wall, the first time a majority of Americans have backed the proposal since Trump launched his first presidential campaign.

As he did in his first run for office, Trump has made border security a central theme for 2024. He has promised to launch the largest domestic deportation operation in American history if elected.

Democrats saw an opening in a New York special election

But Democrats see an opportunity to counter a prevailing narrative that they are soft on border security while Republicans are viewed as hawkish.

House Democrat Tom Suozzi won his special election in New York earlier this month by campaigning hard on Republicans spoiling the bipartisan border bill.

Evan Roth Smith, a Democratic pollster for the political strategy group, Blueprint, said that showed it's possible for Democrats to paint Republicans as "unserious about border security."

He said it's not unlike the opportunity Democrats seized to effectively campaign against Republicans after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade .

"We now have proof-positive in this latest election that Republicans are out over their skis again on immigration. They don't know what to do," Roth Smith said. "And they've handed Democrats something they can run on for months or maybe years."
