Review | Manchester United Museum & Stadium Tour! How Good is it?

Categories England , Manchester , U.K

Manchester United and Old Trafford are one of the most famous teams and stadiums in the world, so it’s pretty cool that you can really easily book and go on an Old Trafford Stadium Tour and visit the Manchester United Museum.

In fact, doing a tour of Manchester United stadium is probably even easier than you think, they literally have time slots available all day when matches are not on and the tickets are not that expensive either.

I went recently with my stepsons who are 6 & 8 and we had a great time! I realised I couldn’t move to Manchester and not visit the legendary Manchester United Stadium and even as a non-supporter (although I left feeling like a supporter), I had goosebumps throughout because of all that we saw on the Man Utd Stadium Tour.

So let me tell you how to book a Manchester United stadium tour, the Old Trafford tour price, what to expect from a Man Utd tour and answer the question ‘is a Manchester United Tour good?’

I booked our tickets through Get Your Guide which is a booking platform I use a lot and trust!

Booking these tickets makes it really easy to check stadium tour availability by each day and time, they don’t charge any extra, AND you get free cancellation up to 24 hours before you book which is really helpful!

What does the Manchester United Tour Ticket include?

The ticket gives access to the Manchester United Museum which you can visit in your own time, and it gives you a 70-minute tour of the stadium with a guide .

Souvenir wise, you are given a branded lanyard when you show your tickets where the ticket goes inside, this can be taken home with you and therefore acts as a bit of a free souvenir .

What To Expect from an Old Trafford Stadium Tour

When you book your ticket online you’ll get an email confirmation to say you must get there 30 minutes before the start time , this is something to keep in mind when planning your Manchester day out!

The reason you are asked to get there early is mainly so you have time to visit the museum before the tour starts and the time you book the tour for is the time your group guided tour starts.

If you don’t get there just on time, then you can do the guided tour and visit the museum at the end.

Manchester United Stadium Tour Parking

The only car park at Old Trafford Stadium open on non-match days is East Car Park E2 ( google maps location here ) so you have to head here. When I visited it the entrance was manned, the super friendly guys told me where to park and there are plenty of disabled access spaces.

The car park is at the front of the stadium and where the Megastore is located.

To get to the museum and where the guided Manchester United tour starts you follow the path around to the right, following the arrow signs to the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand Entrance .

Manchester United Stadium Tour, Path to Sir Alex Ferguson Stand

Here you’ll get a security scan, queue up inside, show your online ticket and be given a paper ticket and lanyard.

Then you go upstairs towards the Man Utd Museum and by Red Cafe at Old Trafford which is a great place to go back to after the tour has finished.

Manchester United Museum

In order to get to where the Manchester Stadium tour starts you have to go through the museum. This is why you’ll get email confirmation telling you to get to the stadium 30 minutes before your ticket time because the time on your ticket is the literal time your guided tour starts you need to be at the end of the museum and meet your guide.

As we entered the museum we could choose to get a photo with a green screen background which could then be purchased at the end.

This was pretty cool as at the end of the tour in the Megastore you can see the photo and pick the different backgrounds , there was a sunset stadium background, normal stadium background and you could choose which player was next to you, of course, we had to get a photo with Ronaldo printed!

Manchester United Stadium Tour, Museum

Walking through the museum doesn’t take long but if you don’t have time or want to spend more time looking, you can return at the end of the tour as there are no time restrictions on access to Old Trafford Museum.

The museum is really interesting though and you should give yourself at least 20 minutes to look around.

Ready to check availability and book tickets? Do it here!

Tours start every 10-15 minutes and staff will be calling your ticket time so make sure you listen out and head to the end of the museum which is downstairs. Then go to the counter and collect a multimedia device for each person which had a lanyard to go around our necks.

This is used at various points on the tour to watch a video or read more about where you are, this is especially good for visitors who do not understand English well and can’t understand what the guide is saying as the multimedia device can be set in multiple languages. Or those hard at hearing who can’t hear the guide.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, Multimedia guide

Our group was pretty big at about 20 people but it never felt too big.

Our guide introduced himself to start off the 70-minute tour and told us a bit about what to expect from the tour and the multimedia devices. We had 2 guides , one who stayed at the front and did all of the explaining and another who stayed at the back to ensure we all stayed together, both were available to chat to as we walked around the stadium from place to place.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, start of tour in stadium

To start the tour off properly we went up into the stadium , this is where the multimedia devices were really cool and this was probably their best use. Of course, the stadium was empty but with the devices, it showed what it looks like busy and it followed the stadium as we moved the device around to different parts of the stadium.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, multimedia guide showing stadium full

We went back inside and to be honest, we did spend a fair amount of time inside the stadium walking under the seats to get to another part of the stadium. Definitely keep this in mind if you have small children with you who don’t like walking much.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, walking inside stadium

We had some good photo opportunities and the first one started as we were in the corner of the stadium where the disabled seating is, this spot gives a really great corner view of the stadium and there is plenty of space to spread out and get photos with no one in the background.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, corner photo of pitch

We went back inside again and walked for a while and this is when we got to probably the best bit of the tour – the changing rooms !

It was really cool to be in a part of the stadium where usually only the players go and seeing all of the shirts in the changing rooms was definitely a highlight.

We had plenty of time in here to take photos and everyone was really good at queuing for the seats, of course, Ronaldo was a popular one, and let each other take photos. It was busy in the room with all of us in but not too bad.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, inside players changing room

We walked out the way the players would to the tunnel . This was the most interactive part of the tour because the guide got all the kids to line up in 2 lines and the parents/adults to start on the side and then we clapped them out onto the edge of the pitch.

Some of the kids on my tour were really big football fans and they loved this.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, inside players tunnel

At the end of the tunnel, we got to start right by the pitch in the corner which was the corner between the West Stand and Sir Bobby Charlton Stand and again take some photos, these photos were better because we had the grass right behind us.

Then, we walked up the side of the pitch to the dugout , we were allowed to sit on the manager’s seats which was also a very cool and unique opportunity.

I also loved seeing the pitch front on from this level and got some great photos.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, walking up side of pitch on tour

Down the side of the dugout, we walked to the media and press room , again this was another cool opportunity and we could sit at the media table and have photos taken, except this photo had to be done by somewhere working there and the photo had to be purchased .

This was the only part of the tour where we were restricted from taking a photo which I think is fair and it’s really good there were no other photo restrictions on the Old Trafford stadium tour.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, media room

After this, we headed back inside and the tour ended outside the Megastore which is also the gift shop and where you can purchase the photo that was taken on arrival to the museum.

Red Cafe at Old Trafford

After we finished the tour we headed back round to the Sir Alex Ferguson stand and went to the Red Cafe at Old Trafford.

There are 2 parts to this , there’s a cafe as you walk in selling drinks and some snack food like cakes and crisps and then there is a sit-down restaurant . This was quite busy when we got there at lunchtime in the school holidays but it’s definitely a cool way to end a memorable visit to Manchester United Stadium!

Overall thoughts and review

I honestly really loved it, even as someone who hasn’t been into football for years I got chills and goosebumps just seeing and hearing how big this club is. I loved the museum for seeing the names of older players and the guide told us a lot about past players too, and then my stepsons loved it for seeing the names of the current players.

We started the tour at the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and went all the way around to the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand so we did see a lot including the changing rooms, tunnel, dugout and media room.

My brother who is a big football fan told me he was so jealous of me going on the Manchester United stadium tour and it made me think that many people might not realise just how easy and accessible it really is to do which is why I wanted to write this post and tell you because it’s not hard to book at all and there is a lot of availability.

The only downside I’d say is that of course, you can’t go on the pitch, which might be disappointing for some and also that there is a lot of walking between corridors and through the areas under the seats so that’s just something to keep in mind if you have difficulty walking or have young children.

I hope this review and recap has helped you decide what to expect from a Manchester United Stadium Tour, and that you should book tickets for an Old Trafford tour here!

Manchester United Stadium Tour Review & Guide

tour old trafford manchester united

Welcome to Old Trafford.

As  Manchester United fans, visiting Old Trafford is always on our bucket list. That dream came during our holiday trip to the UK with an Old Trafford Stadium Tour.

How to book the Manchester United Old Trafford Stadium and Museum Tour?

An Old Trafford Stadium and Museum Tour can be easily booked from the  Manchester United Website . Unlike other stadium tours that allow walk-ins, a Manchester United Stadium Tour requires pre-booking when you purchase the tickets. You would also have access to the Museum. Thus, we recommend either arriving 30-45 minutes earlier to enjoy the Museum or visiting it after the stadium tour.

There are different tour options to choose from. We decided on a 70-minute standard Stadium Tour with an additional meal option. The cost starts from £20 for a child and £36 for an adult. Additional meals at the Red Cafe cost £7.5 and £12.5 more, respectively, for children and adults.

How to Get to Old Trafford from London?

From London to Manchester

Most fans would make their way from London to Manchester for this tour. It is possible to take a day trip to visit the Stadium and return to London. Add another day to watch a live match at the Stadium if possible.

The easiest way is to book a train ride on Avanti West Coast. The departure is from Euston train station, located a few minutes from Euston Tube. We recommend booking online to secure your ride. The train ride takes slightly over 2 hours and is usually on time. Leave on the earliest train before 8am if you are planning a day trip.

Getting to Old Trafford

Take the tram (purple line) from Picadilly with a stop at Old Trafford Picket Ground. Tickets can be bought at the station. After that, it is a 10-12 minute straight walk along Brian Statham Way.

Along this route, you would pass by Old Trafford Stadium Hotel with an impressive Manchester United Logo Wall Mural.

Look out for a tribute mural to Sir Bobby Charlton, too.

Old Trafford: Theatre of Dreams

Before you start your tour, you must savour the moment you step onto the stadium grounds. You would have recognised the silhouette from afar if you had watched enough matches.

In front of the Stadium is the Unity Trinity Stadium featuring Best, Law and Charlton. If you are a true fan, you would recognise these legends. All three have won the Ballon d'Or in the 60s.

Manchester United Stadium Tour:  Where to Start?

Head to Sir Alex Ferguson's reception desk. This is located to the right of the Stadium ( facing the Stadium from the front). Do remember to print your tickets for this tour.

Here, you will collect your free lanyards and take the lifts or escalators to the Museum on level 3. Explore the Museum and meet on level 1 of the Museum 5 minutes before the tour. Your tour guide will be waiting for you in the open space. Since this is a guided tour with fixed timing, arrive on time!

Highlights of Old Trafford Stadium Tour

We started the tour at Sir Alex Ferguson's Stand.

Directly facing us is the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand. With a capacity of 74,310, Old Trafford is the 3rd largest Stadium in the UK. Clad in red, it is a sight to behold. Despite its capacity, it appears smaller than expected. This size gives the spectator an intimate experience as you are close to the football field.

Our eyes are focused on the infamous Stretford End.

The Inside of the Stadium

Next, we headed inside and passed by tributes to Sir Alex Ferguson. A true red fan would understand his contribution to Manchester United's fame and popularity.

Along the way, there were tributes to various players and the great goals scored.

Best View of the Football Field

We emerged at another corner of the Stadium.

This section has the best view of the Stadium, facing the famous Stretford End and Sir Alex Ferguson Stand with Manchester United written across the seats.

Dressing Room

It's back inside the Stadium.

On our way to the Stadium, we passed by the old tunnel that was once the entrance to the field of the old Stadium.

For this stadium tour, we were lucky and saw the actual dressing room. While it is smaller than other stadiums, the aura from it is simply awesome from a fan's perspective.

Tunnel Walk

Another highlight will be the tunnel walk. Adults will line up at the side, while kids will be in line to walk through the tunnel with stadium noises pipe in. Very cool for kids

It's a walk to the Dugout to sit in the same seats where players and coaches sit during the match!

Press Conference

It's a quick stop at the press conference. We are not allowed to take photos of ourselves, but you can opt for the in-house photographer to take one for you.

The last stop is the Megastore.

Here, you can collect your personalised certificate while picking up a souvenir. Each purchase comes with an exclusive Old Trafford Paper Bag.

If you do not have time to visit the Museum before your tour, you can still do so after it (provided you did not take the last tour).  It is a must-visit for fans.

From the massive trophy room to a room dedicated to the Munich Disaster, any true red devil would appreciate the history behind this. This is among the best Stadium Museums for its history and trophies in the UK.

You might get your hands on old match programme copies for free.

The last stop was Red Cafe, located next to the Museum. Our package comes with a meal and a choice of soft drink, tea or coffee. We highly recommend you add this to the package for the experience.

We opted for OT Burger for our meal. If you have a kid, the option will be from the Little Devil's Menu instead. Meals are in smaller portions for kids.

When you are there, check out the back of the chair. You might find your favourite player's name printed on it.

As a fan, a visit to Old Trafford is a must. While getting there may seem daunting initially, it was much easier than expected.

It would have been icing on the cake if we had caught a home match and had first-hand experience of Old Trafford's atmosphere. That may be an excuse to be back in the future!

Klopp trusts youth amid injury chaos as farewell tour arrives at Old Trafford

Liverpool’s youngsters have kept team on track before FA Cup quarter-final but United have been hampered by absentees

L iverpool have used 35 players in all competitions in an energy-sapping season requiring a fight on four fronts as Jürgen Klopp aims to leave with a pot of gold. Despite the need to change things constantly, form has not been adversely affected as players who have arrived in the first‑team squad from near or far have seamlessly transitioned.

There was a complete renovation of the midfield as four players arrived to complement Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones, while a cabal of academy graduates have received debuts thanks to a consistently lengthy injury list, which has meant Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson, among others, missing crucial parts of the season. Still Liverpool are challenging at home and abroad.

The next destination on Klopp’s farewell tour is an FA Cup quarter‑final against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday. Whereas United’s constant injury crisis is hampering Erik ten Hag’s ambitions, Liverpool are embracing the chaos. Arguably they should have defeated Manchester City last Sunday despite four of the back five being second choice at best and a tough opening 20 minutes from which they recovered to produce one of the best performances of an impressive season.

Sparta Prague were given short shrift on Thursday when Liverpool scored four times in the opening 14 minutes. Although the tie was in effect over given the 5-1 win in the Czech Republic, Liverpool were ruthless as they tore apart their Europa League opposition. Klopp could make a triple substitution at half‑time to rest players.

“Injuries have affected us a lot but two things [have helped us]: the dressing‑room culture and the structure we have set on the pitch,” Klopp said.

“We have developed a lot during the season – we don’t change the way we play, the boys know what they have to do when they come on, and when they don’t play they train at least in the same way, so if they do step on to the pitch they know what they have to do. It is not always ‘something else, something else’.

“Everything around changed but we didn’t, we just played the way we wanted to play and that helped a lot. We did that from the first day of the season and that made a real difference. We really found a good way to play with this group of players and it was obviously right for the whole squad and that is why we’ve been pretty stable.”

Consistency is key in the Liverpool dressing room, where standards have been set by Virgil van Dijk and Salah for a number of years. The captain is keen to praise the youngsters who have been called on in key moments and welcomes the chance to impart much-needed knowledge to youngsters such as the 21-year-old Jarell Quansah, who performed impressively against City. Van Dijk shoulders large portions of the pressure, knowing it is part of his role, whether it is speaking to the media after a match or giving a pep talk on the pitch.

Bobby Clark celebrates scoring for Liverpool against Sparta Prague.

Regardless of how talented Liverpool’s academy graduates are, being part of a squad that wants to win four major trophies can be a pressured environment but a lot is being alleviated by senior colleagues. Conor Bradley, 20, and Bobby Clark, 19, have looked incredibly mature and fearless since coming into the squad, the latter rewarded with his first senior goal on Thursday, while Jayden Danns, 18, has signed a new-long term deal, ensuring Klopp’s legacy continues.

Mateusz Musialowski was the latest to make a first appearance, when the 20-year-old came off the bench against Sparta Prague. The Polish forward was beaming when called back to the bench because it is easy to come on for a successful team and learn while winning. Even when a youngster makes a mistake, something to be expected as the standard and speed of opponents improve, they know they have the backing of their manager, allowing them to play as they always have.

after newsletter promotion

At United Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martínez, Casemiro and Mason Mount have all missed lengthy periods while Rasmus Højlund and Harry Maguire were absent in recent weeks. Ten Hag said “no team can deal with so many injuries” but Liverpool are doing a decent job of it. Whereas Klopp has shown faith in teenagers, Ten Hag has found it harder. Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho have proved their worth and Willy Kambwala has shown promise, but others are yet to earn his manager’s trust.

Another of Ten Hag’s sayings is that not everyone can cope with the pressure that comes with being a Manchester United player. Thursday was Salah’s first club start since New Year’s Day after missing most of the first three months because of injury and the Africa Cup of Nations, but others have stepped up in his absence to keep the momentum flowing, whereas United have struggled at regular intervals. United’s best run of four successive Premier League wins ended with defeat by Fulham at home and it was not a coincidence that Højlund was absent that day.

United edged past Everton last weekend to boost confidence and in August 2022 they produced one of their best performances of Ten Hag’s first season in England against Liverpool at Old Trafford , to offer added optimism for the Cup tie. “In general, it is a good place to go actually,” Klopp said of Old Trafford. “It’s real football, it’s all or nothing, a cup competition and then in a few weeks’ time we go there again in the league. Now it is the Cup and it will be decided that day. It sounds great.”

The prospect of any match must sound like music to Klopp at the moment because the conductor can guarantee all his players will be producing the same tune on Sunday, regardless of who is the concertmaster.

Manager Erik ten Hag of Manchester United in action during a first team training session at Carrington Training Ground.

A new chapter of one of sport’s best rivalries will be written Sunday morning.

Liverpool, still with a chance to win four trophies in Jurgen Klopp’s final season, will travel to Old Trafford to take on the roller coaster that is Manchester United in the FA Cup quarterfinals.

Liverpool is a -125 favorite to win the match inside 90 minutes.

It’s true Manchester United has dealt with heaps of adversity this season, mostly in the form of injuries, but the Red Devils also have been just inconsistent, plain and simple.

And inconsistent might be an understatement when it comes to United’s defensive form.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp celebrates after the UEFA Europa League 2023/24 round of 16 second leg match between Liverpool FC and AC Sparta Praha.

That may sound counterintuitive given the fact the Red Devils have allowed just 39 goals (fourth-fewest) in the Premier League this season, but a quick peek under the surface reveals a calamitous defensive process that is just waiting to get exposed.

Man. U. currently ranks 16th in expected goals against (not including penalties), 18th in shots allowed per 90 minutes and 14th in big scoring chances conceded.

The Red Devils have a great transition attack led by some elite footballers and a terrific goalkeeper who can provide some cover for their defensive follies, but this is not a winning formula — especially against Liverpool.

The Reds rank first in the Premier League in creating expected goals, big scoring chances and getting shots on target.

It’s hard to see how United’s defense is able to keep its wits for 90 minutes against a Liverpool attack that is firing on all cylinders right now.

The play: Liverpool -2.5 (+475, DraftKings)

Two arrested for alleged tragedy chanting at Man United-Liverpool

Two Manchester United fans have been arrested following Sunday's FA Cup quarterfinal against Liverpool at Old Trafford for alleged tragedy chanting relating to the Hillsborough disaster.

United won 4-3, scoring in the last minute of stoppage time in extra time to seal victory after a tense game.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

Last June, Premier League teams came together to agree new measures for tackling the rise in tragedy-related chanting at matches, with criminal prosecution of offenders a principal aim.

Chief Inspector James Collins, who was part of the police team responsible for the fixture, said: "I would like to thank the vast majority of supporters who came along to enjoy what turned out to be an intense game right to the very last minute.

"The arrests made were the result of us taking a proactive, zero-tolerance approach to ensure that genuine supporters and spectators were able to enjoy the match safely.

"GMP can confirm that a 21-year-old and a 59-year-old man were arrested in connection with tragedy chanting. Incidents of tragedy chanting will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly."

The arrests follow a Football Association statement from Sunday condemning the tragedy chanting.

"We are aware of the reported tragedy chanting during [Sunday's] FA Cup fixture between Manchester United and Liverpool, and we will be liaising with and supporting Greater Manchester Police," the statement said.

"We strongly condemn any offensive, abusive and discriminatory chants in football stadiums, and we are determined to stamp this behaviour out.

"It is entirely unacceptable and can have a lasting and damaging impact on people and communities within our game. It must stop, and we support any club and their fans who try to eradicate this from the terraces."

Liverpool defiant in defeat – but lessons must be learned from Old Trafford

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - MARCH 17: Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool looks dejected as he leaves the field after defeat to Manchester United during the Emirates FA Cup Quarter Final between Manchester United and Liverpool FC at Old Trafford on March 17, 2024 in Manchester, England. Stunned silence swiftly turned to a booming show of defiance.

The 9,000-strong travelling throng from Merseyside had been shocked by Amad Diallo ’s dramatic late winner at Old Trafford.

Liverpool’s quadruple dream lay in tatters . Hopes of a return to Wembley as part of Jurgen Klopp’s farewell tour had been dashed. This painful FA Cup defeat at the hands of their arch-rivals cut deep.

But as the away fans waited patiently to be allowed out around 20 minutes after the final whistle, the mood changed and the noise was cranked up once again. “We are Liverpool ” was followed by a rousing rendition of the club’s anthem before Klopp’s name was chanted repeatedly.

If something had to give in Liverpool’s pursuit of perfection, then at least it was this. The reality is that they are chasing bigger prizes as they eye Premier League and Europa League glory to accompany last month’s Carabao Cup triumph.

Given the injury crisis Klopp has been wrestling with recently, it’s a miracle they maintained a challenge on all fronts for so long. Now the manager must ensure this setback doesn’t have wider implications.

It feels like the international break comes at a good time for Liverpool. When they resume their title charge at home to Brighton on March 31, Ibrahima Konate and Curtis Jones should be fit. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota won’t be far behind them.

“The more of the boys we have available, the bigger our chances are to finish the season in style,” Klopp said. “We will go for everything, but first the boys have to recover.”

Liverpool won’t have to wait long for a shot at redemption, with the Premier League trip to Old Trafford coming up on April 7. Those three points are certainly more valuable to them than a place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup .

However, to secure them, there can be no repeat of the glaring errors that blighted Sunday’s performance. Klopp’s side only had themselves to blame for this defeat and lessons must be learned.

They made life difficult for themselves by starting slowly and allowing United to grasp the initiative. How was Alejandro Garnacho not tracked in the build-up to Scott McTominay ’s opener? Sloppy in possession and far too easy to play through, Liverpool could have fallen further behind before their powers of recovery came to the fore.

“We had to organise ourselves a little bit better,” explained Klopp. “We struggled with the man-marking, we didn’t play enough, these kinds of things. In the moment when we found for the first time a way to play, then we got rhythm and it looked really good.”

With Alexis Mac Allister ’s equaliser swiftly followed by Mohamed Salah celebrating his 13th goal in 14 appearances against United, Liverpool had the perfect platform to kick on and show why these teams are 17 points apart in the Premier League table.

They squandered it. During a dominant second-half display, chances were wasted and decision-making repeatedly let them down. This was underlined by the wasted five-v-two counter-attack after substitute Cody Gakpo led the charge. They let United off the hook and, as Klopp put it, “left the door open”.

United duly equalised through Antony with three minutes left to force extra time and Klopp’s decision to replace Salah with the ineffective Gakpo backfired.

After substitute Harvey Elliott ’s deflected strike put the visitors 3-2 up, Liverpool were on the brink of their first FA Cup win at Old Trafford since 1921, but there was no control. Game management was conspicuous by its absence.

Darwin Nunez ’s misplaced pass left them exposed in the build-up to Marcus Rashford ’s equaliser and then worse followed as a first penalty shootout between these clubs looked to be the outcome. A Liverpool corner became a two-v-one breakaway after Elliott was dispossessed just outside United’s penalty area.

It is the first time Klopp’s side have conceded four goals in a game since the chaotic final day of last season at Southampton and it was also the first time in 46 games in all competitions in 2023-24 that they have lost after going in front.

The manager felt that fatigue was ultimately Liverpool’s undoing in extra time. This was their ninth match across four different competitions in the space of 29 days and the second time they had played 120 minutes in that sequence. Legs were weary and minds scrambled late on.

“It got really hard for us,” Klopp said. “That was the first time that I really saw my team struggling. We’ve played a lot of football recently.

“We didn’t even know who to take off. The way we conceded the last two goals, you can see we were not on top of our game anymore as we gave two balls away. Absolutely no criticism about that. I saw a team who understood the importance of the game and gave absolutely everything. Today it was not enough and that’s what we have to accept. Now they fly all around the world pretty much. Let’s really hope and pray they come back healthy.”

The final break of the season gives Liverpool the chance to take stock and regroup. When the action resumes, it will be relentless, with the stakes so high and so little margin for error. Brighton and Sheffield United at home before that revenge mission against United and then the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final with Atalanta .

Klopp had always dismissed talk of signing off with a quadruple, insisting the energy-sapping demands involved meant the odds were stacked against them. He was proved right. This was a game too far for Liverpool. They threw it away, but with the bigger picture still so enthralling, their supporters refused to stay quiet for long.

The FA Cup was never going to define the final chapter of Klopp’s reign. It’s the Premier League title race and a possible European final in Dublin on May 22 that will do that.
