About adaptive cruise control, what you need to know about adaptive cruise control.

Adaptive Cruise Control uses a forward-looking camera or a forward-looking camera and radar technology (depending on your vehicle) to monitor vehicles you’re following. This feature helps you follow a vehicle ahead at the following gap you select (Far, Medium, or Near) while you steer. This helps reduce the need for you to frequently brake and accelerate.

If the system doesn’t detect a vehicle ahead, Adaptive Cruise Control works just like cruise control and maintains your selected cruise speed. When the system detects a vehicle ahead of you in your lane, it will automatically slow down or speed up your vehicle to maintain your selected following gap.

Just like cruise control, Adaptive Cruise Control uses the cruise control ON/OFF, CANCEL, SET and RESUME buttons on the steering wheel.

For more on how to use Adaptive Cruise Control, see the How-To article . This article will tell you about the different applications of the feature and some things to know before using it.

Adaptive Cruise Control Override

If you press the accelerator pedal while the system is in use, automatic braking won’t occur. You’ll get a message in the cluster display, or the green ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL icon will turn blue, indicating that Adaptive Cruise Control automatic braking is temporarily disabled until you release the accelerator pedal.

Adaptive Cruise Control Can Follow a Vehicle to a Stop

On most vehicles, Adaptive Cruise Control can follow a vehicle ahead to a stop. When the vehicle ahead starts moving again, you should check that it’s safe to proceed and then either press the accelerator pedal or RESUME button to continue driving. For very brief stops, Adaptive Cruise Control will automatically resume and follow the vehicle ahead.

Adaptive Cruise Control has limited braking capability, so if the vehicle you’re following stops too suddenly, you’ll get an alert to take action by quickly applying the brakes yourself.

If your vehicle has the Driver Attention System (DAS) on the steering column, Adaptive Cruise Control may automatically resume and follow the vehicle ahead for longer stops if the system detects that you're paying attention to the road.

Check your Owner’s Manual to learn more about how Adaptive Cruise Control works on your vehicle at low speeds.

Trailering with Adaptive Cruise Control

If equipped, Adaptive Cruise Control may be used when towing an attached trailer that is electrically connected and within GM-approved allowable size and weight limits.

When you turn on Adaptive Cruise Control while trailering and change the gap settings, an icon will appear in your Driver Information Center (DIC) next to your gap setting display that indicates you have trailering functionality for Adaptive Cruise Control equipped.

When towing a trailer, Adaptive Cruise Control driving characteristics, such as following gap, acceleration rates and braking rates, may be modified to provide a better towing experience.

When towing a trailer with Adaptive Cruise Control, it is important to properly set the Trailer Gain. Check your Owner’s Manual for more information on setting Trailer Gain.

It is recommended you select Tow/Haul mode when driving down steep hills or mountain grades, or when hauling heavy loads.

If you turn on Adaptive Cruise Control and do not see the trailering icon in the DIC when you try to change your gap settings, your vehicle is not properly equipped to use Adaptive Cruise Control while trailering. You should not use Adaptive Cruise Control while trailering if this is the case.

Adaptive Cruise Control should not be used while towing a trailer with an aftermarket trailer brake controller. Aftermarket trailer brake controllers may not function properly with the Adaptive Cruise Control system.

You should read your Owner’s Manual to learn more about the limitations of the system.

Safety Consideration When Using Adaptive Cruise Control

  • The system can only brake so much. Your complete attention is always required while driving.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control does not steer your vehicle. You must always be in control of vehicle steering.
  • The system may not react to parked, stopped or slow-moving vehicles. You should always be ready to take action and apply the brakes.
  • Don’t use the system on winding or hilly roads, on freeway exit or entrance ramps, or when trailering (if your vehicle isn’t equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control with trailering). In these driving conditions, the system may not detect the vehicle ahead.
  • The system can’t detect traffic lights or traffic signs, so you still need to brake when necessary at intersections and lights.
  • Avoid using Adaptive Cruise Control when the rear of the vehicle or truck bed is heavily loaded. See your Vehicle Load Limits and Owner’s Manual for more information.

Safety or driver assistance features are no substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. The driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings and road conditions at all times. Visibility, weather and road conditions may affect feature performance. Read the vehicle’s Owner’s Manual for more important feature limitations and information.

For your security, please don’t include personal info such as phone number, address or credit card details.

Chevy Cars w/ Adaptive Cruise Control (20 Popular Models)

Adaptive cruise control is increasingly common in mainstream vehicles, and Chevrolet has several cars, SUVs, and trucks with adaptive cruise control or conventional cruise control system.

Check the corresponding tables to see the relevant model years when the system became available.

chevrolet

Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

Older vehicles’ basic cruise control system helps maintain a steady cruising speed for a relaxing long-distance drive. Still, it cannot do what the newer, more sophisticated adaptive cruise control can.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional cruise control system by adjusting the vehicle’s speed to match the car ahead subject to the driver’s predefined speed, which is excellent for highway cruising and avoiding collisions.

Newer Chevys have adaptive cruise control, adjusting the vehicle’s speed to maintain a pre-selected distance from the car ahead.

While Chevrolet equips many pickups with cruise control for on-road cruising, the following alternatives may be worth exploring for their more-comfortable ride quality or greater payload and towing capacities:

  • Ram trucks with cruise control .
  • Ford trucks with cruise control .
  • Jeep trucks with cruise control .
  • GMC trucks with cruise control .

Meanwhile, the automakers below have strong picks for cars and SUVs with adaptive cruise control:

  • Honda SUVs with ACC .
  • Toyota vehicles with ACC .
  • Hyundai vehicles with ACC .
  • Kia vehicles with ACC .
  • Volkswagen vehicles with ACC .

Chevy Cars with Adaptive Cruise Control

#1 chevrolet spark.

2022 is the final production year for this little hatchback.

All Chevrolet Spark models from 2013 to 2022 had cruise control in the higher 1LT, 2LT, and ACTIV trims; the base LS trim did not have cruise control.

#2 Chevrolet Sonic

Chevrolet discontinued this extra-small sedan or hatchback after 2020.

From 2012 to 2020, most Chevy Sonic models (LT, LTZ, RS, Premier) have cruise control, except for the base LS trim.

Only the Chevy Sonic’s LT trim in 2012 did not have cruise control; LT in other model years had the system.

#3 Chevrolet Cobalt

2010 marked the end of the line for the compact Cobalt sedan or coupe.

Most Chevrolet Cobalt models did not have cruise control, except for the more-expensive SS and LTZ trims from 2007 to 2010.

2005 and 2006 Chevy Cobalts had cruise control in most trims, except for the base model.

#4 Chevrolet Malibu

The midsize Chevrolet Malibu sedan has had standard cruise control from 2006 to the current model, while the ones from 2002 to 2005 only had the system in the higher trims.

Unfortunately, no Chevy Malibu has an adaptive cruise control system.

#5 Chevrolet Impala

This large sedan ceased production after 2020.

All Chevy Impala models from 2006 to 2020 had a cruise control system.

However, Chevy Impalas from 2002 to 2005 only had cruise control in the higher trims.

#6 Chevrolet Volt

The Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid had standard cruise control from 2011 to 2019.

#7 Chevrolet Camaro

This famous muscle car is available in coupe or convertible, with many powerful trims to suit various tastes for speed.

All Chevy Camaros from 2010 onwards have had cruise control as a standard provision.

No Chevy Camaro has the more sophisticated adaptive cruise control.

#8 Chevrolet Corvette

Cruise control has been standard in all Chevy Corvette models since 2001.

Chevy SUVs with Adaptive Cruise Control

#9 chevrolet trax.

Chevy Trax subcompact SUVs from 2015 to 2022 only had cruise control in the higher trims.

The base Chevy Trax LS trim did not have the cruise control system.

#10 Chevrolet Trailblazer

The Trailblazer is slightly larger than the Trax but is still a subcompact SUV.

Chevy Trailblazers have had cruise control in the upper trims since 2021, leaving only the base LS trim without the system.

Cruise control is also available in most Chevy Trailblazer models from 2002 to 2009, except for 2002 to 2004 when only the pricier trims had it.

No Chevy Trailblazer has the higher-spec adaptive cruise control.

#11 Chevrolet Equinox

Honda CR-Vs and Toyota RAV4s dominate the small SUV class, but the Chevy Equinox stands out with its stylish exterior and precise handling.

Chevy Equinox compact SUVs have had standard cruise control since 2006, with the 2005 base trim the only exception.

Unfortunately, Chevrolet Equinox does not have the more sophisticated adaptive cruise control system.

#12 Chevrolet Blazer

The midsize two-row Chevy Blazer SUV has had cruise control as a standard provision since 2019.

Chevy Blazer does not have adaptive cruise control, however.

#13 Chevrolet Traverse

Midsize three-row Chevrolet Traverse models from 2022 onwards have had at least the basic cruise control system, while the Premier and High Country trims have the more sophisticated adaptive cruise control.

From 2018 to 2021, only Chevy Traverse’s High Country trim had adaptive cruise control, while the rest had conventional cruise control.

Between its 2009 debut and 2017, all Chevy Traverse models had cruise control.

#14 Chevrolet Tahoe

The Tahoe is one of two full-size SUVs within Chevrolet’s lineup; Chevy Suburban is the other (next on the list).

Since 2002, all Chevy Tahoe models have had cruise control.

Although it’s a massive three-row SUV, Chevrolet Tahoe does not have the higher-spec adaptive cruise control.

#15 Chevrolet Suburban

The Suburban has such a huge interior that you’d need to settle for a van if you want anything bigger.

Like its Tahoe stablemate, the three-row Chevy Suburban has had cruise control as standard equipment since 2002.

Unfortunately, no Chevrolet Suburban has adaptive cruise control, the more sophisticated distance management system that smaller and cheaper SUVs have.

Chevy Trucks with Adaptive Cruise Control

#16 chevrolet colorado.

Midsize trucks are increasingly popular due to their smaller dimensions than full-size pickups for maneuverability while having a reasonable towing capacity for broad utility.

Except for 2004 and 2005, all Chevy Colorado models have cruise control, including the base Work Truck (WT) trim.

No Chevy Colorado has adaptive cruise control, the speed management system that allows the vehicle to slow or accelerate depending on the car ahead.

#17 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The full-size light-duty Chevy Silverado 1500 has had cruise control in the higher trims since 2019, although the system was a standard provision from 2012 to 2018.

No Chevy Silverado 1500 had the higher-spec adaptive cruise control.

#18 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

Most Chevy Silverado 2500HD trims have had cruise control since 2020, except for the base Work Truck (WT) trim, where the system is optional.

From 2012 to 2019, all Chevy Silverados had cruise control as a standard provision; older models only had cruise control in the upper trims.

#19 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD

Since 2020, the heavy-duty Chevy Silverado 3500HD has had cruise control in the pricier trims, with the system optional for the base trim.

Silverado 3500HD models from 2012 to 2019 had cruise control as standard equipment.

Chevy Electric Vehicle with Adaptive Cruise Control

#20 chevrolet bolt ev.

The Chevy Bolt is the American company’s first EV, and all the models from 2017 have had standard cruise control.

Adaptive cruise control has been available in the higher trims since 2022.

Edmunds' Expert Review

  • Surprisingly sharp and nimble handling around turns, with prodigious grip
  • several available engine choices including a fuel-efficient turbo-four, a strong V6 and a boffo V8
  • smooth and quiet ride quality on the highway and in town.
  • Poor outward visibility
  • claustrophobic cabin.

The Chevrolet Camaro has been fully redesigned for 2016.

Edmunds says

The new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro should definitely be on your shopping list if you're interested in buying a sporty two-door coupe. With its new hardware underneath and multiple available engines, you're going to love the Camaro's newfound levels of handling and performance. Ready to learn more about this modern pony car?

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro LT 2dr Coupe w/1LT (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6M) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $5.28 per gallon for premium unleaded in California.

Vehicle overview.

Muscle cars and fuel-efficient engines are normally about as synonymous with each other as Keith Richards and puritanical living. But the automotive landscape of 2016 is vastly different from the one in 1967, when nobody would think twice about taking a cross-country road trip in a gas-guzzling Cadillac the size of a Sherman tank. These days, volatile gas prices and ever more stringent fuel economy requirements make a strong case for downsizing in the engine bay, and that's what General Motors has done with the fully redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Camaro.

Under the hood of entry-level Camaros is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. A four-banger Camaro? Perish the thought! But it's hard to argue with the results. The new 2016 Camaro four-cylinder provides 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, as well as more than 30 mpg on the highway, Chevy reckons. This engine also does duty in the Cadillac ATS and CTS, just like the Camaro's underlying "Alpha" platform, which is more compact than the platform that underpinned the 2010-'15 Camaro. That means the new car is slightly shorter, narrower, lower and about 200 pounds lighter than before. Standard on the V6 and V8 Camaros is cylinder deactivation technology, which cuts power to half the cylinders under light acceleration for increased fuel economy.

But these engines weren't exactly tuned by Gina McCarthy , as both are more potent than their counterparts in the outgoing car. The new V6 rises from 326 hp to 335 hp, while the Camaro SS gets a 29-hp injection courtesy of the same 6.2-liter V8 that drives the C7 Corvette. The SS with the manual transmission also comes with a new rev-matching feature on downshifts that takes the guesswork out of doing it yourself. Additionally, the SS can be ordered with Chevy's Magnetic Ride Control, an adaptive suspension setup that utilizes magnetic dampers for a customized driving experience. This suspension, previously only available on the high-performance ZL1, can instantly transform the Camaro from comfortable cruiser to full-bore corner-carving sports car.

2016 camaro cruise control

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro retains the dynamic proportions established by its retro-themed, yet thoroughly modern predecessor.

In terms of competition, the turbocharged Camaro does battle with the 2016 Ford Mustang EcoBoost , while the Camaro V6 finds foes in the Mustang V6 and the 2016 Dodge Challenger V6 . With its increased power and reduced weight, the Camaro SS has a leg up on the regular V8-powered Ford Mustang GT and Dodge Challenger R/T, but since the ZL1 and track-focused Z/28 have departed for 2016, the SS is — for now — the most vigorous Camaro on the market. If money is not a limiting factor, the new 2016 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350 flaunts a unique 526-hp V8 and race-ready suspension tuning, while the astounding 707-hp Challenger Hellcat is second to none when it comes to dragstrip bragging rights. Or, if you want something smaller and with more interior sophistication, the redesigned 2016 Audi TT is a compelling choice.

But in the final measure, the 2016 Camaro provides just what we want: tire-burning power, movie-star styling and just enough fuel economy and refinement to make it fit for the modern age.

Performance & mpg

Chevrolet Camaros in 1LT and 2LT trims come with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 275 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. A 3.6-liter V6 that churns out 335 hp and 284 lb-ft is optional on these trims. The 1SS and 2SS models come with a 6.2-liter V8 with 455 hp and 455 lb-ft on tap. All Camaros come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, and an eight-speed automatic with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters is optional. On the SS manual, automatic rev-matching on downshifts is included.

EPA-estimated fuel economy for the V6 with a manual transmission stands at 21 mpg combined (18 city/27 highway) and 23 mpg combined (19/28) with the automatic. There's less of a difference on the V8, with 19 mpg combined (16/25) for the manual and 20 mpg combined (17/28) with the automatic. For top fuel economy, go with the turbo-four as it returns 24 mpg (21/30) and 25 mpg (22/31), respectively.

In our testing, a Camaro with the V6 and an automatic transmission accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, which is quicker than the claimed acceleration for the V6-equipped Mustang and Challenger. We've also tested an automatic-equipped Camaro V8. Here, it rocketed to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. For comparison, a 2015 Mustang GT automatic we tested posted a 4.7-second 0-60-mph time, and a 2015 Dodge Challenger R/T manual did it in 5.8 seconds.

Standard safety features on the 2016 Chevy Camaro include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat knee and side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Also standard is the OnStar telematics system, which includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation.

A rearview camera is standard on all Camaros. The Convenience and Lighting package (optional on 2LT, standard on 2SS) adds several safety features, including a blind spot monitor, lane departure warning and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Camaro its top score of Good in the small-overlap and moderate-overlap front-impact crash tests, as well as a Good score in the side-impact and head restraint (whiplash protection) tests. The Camaro earned a second-best score of Acceptable in the roof strength test.

The 2016 Camaro is fast. Very fast. We haven't tested the base turbocharged four-cylinder yet, but our first impressions of the V6- and V8-powered Camaros have confirmed that Chevrolet is taking the fight directly to the Mustang and Challenger. The Camaro's higher-horsepower output in addition to the new, lighter chassis makes a difference on the road, where you'll need little time to overtake the competition.

2016 camaro cruise control

Chevy estimates that the Camaro SS can get from zero to 60 mph in 4 seconds flat when equipped with the automatic transmission.

The dynamic difference between the 2015 and 2016 Camaros will be evident the first time you throw the new car into a corner. The SS attacks bends with the same eagerness and ferocity as the previous model's track-ready Z/28 variant, and it feels nimble, too, thanks to the excellent Cadillac-sourced chassis. Happily, the Camaro shrugs off road imperfections with casual indifference, even when not equipped with the superb adjustable suspension. In short, Chevrolet's muscle car is both more refined and more capable than the car it replaces.

Step into the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro and you'll find a cockpit that blends themes of the previous-gen Camaro and current-gen Corvette. The flat-bottom steering wheel design is shared with the 2016 'Vette, and it includes fingertip paddles that shift through the gears in automatic-equipped cars and enable the rev-matching feature in Camaros with the manual transmission. Chevrolet also integrated the tachometer, speedometer and central driver information screen into one complete group for a cleaner, more modern look. Gone is the quartet of retro-inspired engine information gauges forward of the shifter; air-conditioning vents with knurled surrounds that control the temperature have replaced them.

2016 camaro cruise control

While the exterior evokes the last-gen Camaro, the cabin is much more modern and contains references to the current Corvette.

Interior quality is a bit hit-or-miss, depending on what panel or trim piece you're checking out. GM's incorporation of its latest touchscreen interface is promising, however, especially considering the integration of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. We haven't fully tested it, but it will be interesting to see how the latest MyLink system compares to the Challenger's excellent Uconnect touchscreen and the Mustang's new Sync 3 system.

The front seats are more comfortable and supportive than before, but the dinky backseats are strictly for small children or contortionists. You also need to be a bit of a contortionist to see out of the thing. As with the last Camaro, a high beltline and low roof means outward visibility in all directions is sorely lacking. Plus, with a limited amount of light entering the cabin through the narrow windows, the interior can feel dark and claustrophobic. But hey, it's a Camaro, right? The point is to look good and turn heads, or so the logic goes.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro models

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is a four-seat coupe available in four trims: 1LT, 2LT, 1SS and 2SS. A convertible will be available later in the model year.

Standard on the base 1LT are 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, LED daytime running lights, dual exhaust tips, a limited-slip differential (with manual transmission), a rearview camera, keyless entry and ignition, air-conditioning, cruise control, an eight-way power driver seat, a six-way power passenger seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob and adjustable driving modes. Technology equipment includes Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity, OnStar (with 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity), a 7-inch touchscreen with Chevy's MyLink interface, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration compatibility and a six-speaker sound system with satellite radio, two USB ports and an auxiliary audio jack.

The available Technology package adds a nine-speaker Bose audio system and an 8-inch touchscreen with voice controls. This touchscreen also includes Apple CarPlay compatibility, and Chevy says Android Auto functionality will be added later in the model year via a software update.

Step up to the 2LT and you'll get dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats and the infotainment system from the Technology package.

Ordering a 2LT with the Convenience and Lighting package will add heated and auto-dimming exterior mirrors, rear parking sensors, illuminated sill plates, driver memory functions, a head-up display, an upgraded multifunction gauge cluster display, configurable ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel, wireless device charging, rear cross-traffic alert, a blind spot monitor and lane departure warning.

An RS package is available for the 1LT and 2LT models, with 20-inch wheels, xenon headlights, LED taillights, a special grille and a rear lip spoiler.

The 1SS builds upon features from the 1LT trim, adding a V8 engine, 20-inch wheels with run-flat tires, upgraded brakes, a limited-slip differential, xenon headlights, a rear spoiler, quad exhaust outlets, a "Track" driving mode, a sport-tuned suspension and an 8-inch multifunction display.

The range-topping 2SS includes all the features from the 2LT trim, along with unique interior accents and the Convenience and Lighting package.

2016 camaro cruise control

A configurable multifunction gauge cluster display is included on 2LT and 2SS models.

Optional extras include a sunroof (all Camaros), a performance exhaust (all V6- and V8-powered models), a navigation system (2LT and 2SS trims), a Heavy Duty Cooling and Brake package for the 1LT and 2LT, and adaptive suspension dampers (V8 models).

2016 Chevrolet Camaro Review

Keith Buglewicz

Updated December 23, 2019

Modern muscle cars like the 2016 Camaro offer much more than the straight-line speed of their ancestors. The new Camaro offers the kind of handling and braking that was once the exclusive purview of higher-end European sports coupes and sedans, all with distinctly American styling and big V8 rumble.

If you want European interior sophistication to match your driving dynamics, you might be disappointed by the new Camaro’s hard plastics. Similarly, the narrow windows result in a decidedly pinched rear view; claustrophobics, stay away.

What's New?

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is all-new this year. It shares its name and basic styling with last year’s model, but on a smaller, lighter and much more sophisticated chassis. The 3.6-liter V6 and 6.2-liter V8 are both more powerful, and the new turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder balances power and fuel economy.

It’s no stretch to say that the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro feels more like a luxury-sports coupe from behind the wheel than a traditional muscle car. That’s because the new Camaro was developed from the same underpinnings as the Cadillac ATS, one of GM’s best-driving cars ever. The benefits go beyond just handling, too. The new Camaro looks similar to the previous generation, but the tidier dimensions make it look athletic where the old car looked ponderous. It’s lighter, allowing the V6 and V8 engines to pack a bigger punch than before while still getting better fuel economy. The view out the back is still pretty terrible, but there’s no mistake that the new Camaro is going to give the new Mustang night sweats.

Used 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Pricing

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors, but here's a general idea of what buyers are currently paying for used 2016 Chevrolet Camaro models when purchasing from a dealership.

For reference, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro originally had a starting sticker price of $29,685, with the range-topping Camaro SS Convertible 2D starting at $45,790.

Driving the Used 2016 Chevrolet Camaro

Chevy’s new Camaro is smaller than its predecessor by at least an inch pretty much every dimension – width, height and length – and it loses at least 200 pounds. The upshot is that the new Camaro feels more nimble and lively as soon as you get behind the wheel. The automatic transmission is a new 8-speed that we’ve grown to appreciate in other GM vehicles, and it offers up slick shifts and paddle shifting, enhancing the fun-to-drive quotient rather than diminishing it. A 6-speed manual transmission is available for those who still want to shift for themselves. All Camaros are also available with Brembo brakes – they’re standard on the V8-powered SS – for superior stopping ability. Put it all together and you have a car that offers the driving sophistication of a European luxury-sports sedan, but for considerably less money.

Interior Comfort

Clever touches abound inside the new 2016 Camaro. The new climate controls use the trim rings around the center vents to control temperature and fan speed, reducing dash clutter. The design and materials are better than before, but still lag behind the Ford Mustang or Dodge Challenger. The comfortable and sporty seats offer good support for hard cornering, and the big gauges are easy to read. The touch-screen infotainment system includes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the screen reflects interior surfaces like crazy. We’ve ignored the rear seat, and after one glance, you will too.

Exterior Styling

It’s funny how the previous-generation car never looked oversized until we laid eyes on the 2016 Camaro. The lines are tidy and clean, but look spot-on regardless of which model you’re looking at. The crisp styling still owes something to the classic 1969 model, but in reality it’s more of an updated look at the last-generation car. The headlights seem impossibly thin, and we like the aggressive width of the fenders coupled with the low-slung roof. Sadly, that same combination narrows the windows and makes it nearly impossible to see out the back of the Camaro.

Favorite Features

APPLE CARPLAY/ANDROID AUTO The 2016 Camaro is one of the first cars available with Apple’s excellent CarPlay system, and we’re loving it. Connecting is a matter of plugging in your phone to the USB port, and it’s literally as easy to use as your iPhone. Don’t worry: Android Auto is on its way.

DRIVE-MODE SELECTOR A toggle behind the shifter on the new Camaro lets drivers fine-tune their car’s throttle response. In a fuel-saving mood? Select Eco. There’s a Sport mode for when you want to have some fun, and Touring for everyday driving. There’s even a Track mode for the V8-powered Camaro SS.

Standard Features

The base model 2016 Camaro 1LT comes with the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and a 6-speed manual transmission. There’s also a 7-inch touch-screen audio system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual USB ports, an AUX input, and GM’s 4GLTE Wi-Fi hotspot technology. There’s also Bluetooth, automatic climate control, cruise control, and a color driver-information display between the main gauges. Upscale standard features include push-button start and keyless entry, power driver and passenger seats, a leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel, and the Driver Select Mode. There are also multiple airbags and advanced stability control to help keep you safe.

Factory Options

The two most notable options are under the hood in the form of a 335-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 for the Camaro LT, or the new 455-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 in the new Camaro SS. Beyond engine choices and the new 8-speed automatic, the new Camaro offers an upgraded audio system with a larger touch screen, and an enhanced driver-information center that’s similar to the multi-configurable system on the Chevrolet Corvette. A 2016 Camaro SS also adds available magnetic ride-control suspension, power sunroof, in-dash navigation for those times when your iPhone doesn’t have a signal, and a dual-mode exhaust system.

Engine & Transmission

Standard is the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, which may go against the standard muscle-car formula that says more cylinders are better, but this engine packs a punch. The upgrade from that is a more powerful (but with less torque) 3.6-liter V6 engine, with advanced fuel injection and, for the first time, cylinder deactivation for better fuel economy. But the real news is the V8, of course, now with 6.2 liters pumping out 455 horsepower in new Camaro SS models, the most powerful Camaro SS ever made. Transmissions range from the standard 6-speed manual that includes automatic rev matching on V8 models to the new 8-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Fuel-economy numbers aren’t yet available, but should improve thanks to the new engines and lighter body.

2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 275 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm 295 lb-ft of torque @ 3,000-4,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 22/31 mpg (automatic), 21/30 mpg (manual)

3.6-liter V6 335 horsepower @ 6,800 rpm 284 lb-ft of torque @ 5,300 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/28 mpg (automatic), 18/27 mpg (manual)

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle (typically, around the 2-3 years mark) with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better (or worse) than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built? (Whether that purpose is commuting efficiently to and from work in the city, keeping your family safe, making you feel like you’ve made it to the top — or that you’re on your way — or making you feel like you’ve finally found just the right partner for your lifestyle.)

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane — parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading — as well as the essential — acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.

How to Replace a Cruise Control Switch

$191.24 - $496.02.

When cruise control systems were first introduced, they usually were activated by a series of switches that ranged from dash controls to secondary turn signal switches. As technology advanced, one of the first systems to cater to the evolving needs of the automotive consumer group was the cruise control. In order to improve safety and increase driving comfort, many automotive manufacturers began to move the cruise control activation switch to the outside edges of the steering wheel.

The cruise control switch is typically comprised of five individual functions that allow the driver to activate and control the cruise control setting with either of their thumbs or any fingers on the steering wheel.

The five functions on all cruise control switches today typically include:

  • On button : this button will "arm" the cruise control system and set it by pressing the "set" button.
  • Off button : this button is designed to turn off the system so it can't be accidently activated by mistake.
  • Set/accelerate button : this button will set the cruise control speed once a desired speed has been achieved. Pressing this button again and holding down on it typically causes the vehicle to increase its speed.
  • Resume (RES) button : the resume button allows the driver to reactivate the cruise control setting to the previous speed, if they had to temporarily disengage the system due to traffic or having to slow down by pressing the brake pedal.
  • Coast function button : the coast function is one that allows the driver to coast, typically used when driving down hills or in higher volume traffic situations.

Along with the hand held controls, many of today's cruise control systems have a secondary shut off system for safety. For drivers that own automatic transmissions , the brake release switch is used as a secondary shut off device while those with manual transmissions that rely on a clutch pedal to shift often have both the brake and clutch pedal release switch. Having all of these systems work correctly is vital for vehicle safety and proper activation of the cruise control.

Occasionally, the steering column cruise control switch breaks or becomes faulty due to extended use , water or condensation inside the steering wheel, or an electrical problem with the switch. On some vehicles, the cruise control switch is still located on a turn signal indicator. For purposes of this instructional article, we'll focus on the most common type of cruise control switch, located on the steering wheel.

  • Note : In this article we will focus on providing general instructions for removing a cruise control switch. In many cases, the exact location of the cruise control switch is different, as are the instructions for removing and replacing them.

Part 1 of 3: Determining the symptoms of a bad cruise control switch

The primary way most mechanics know that a certain component is damaged and needs to be replaced is based on an error code . On most OBD-II scanners, an error code P-0568 notes that a problem exists with the cruise control switch, typically a power or short circuit issue. However, if you don't receive this error code or don't have a scanner to download error codes, completing self-diagnostic inspections gives the mechanic a better starting point as to how to pinpoint the right component that is broken.

Since the control switch cluster has multiple toggle switches on it, one or any of the following cruise control malfunctions requires the mechanic to replace both cruise control switches as the fault may exist with one or both toggle clusters; but without replacing them and testing them, you won't know exactly which one is faulty. It's always best to replace both of them at the same time.

Some of the other symptoms of a bad of faulty cruise control switch include:

Cruise control will not turn on : If you press the "on" button, there should be a warning light indicator that lights up on the dashboard. If this light does not turn on, it's a good indication that the on button is either damaged or that the cruise control button assembly has an electrical short. If the short is the cause, the OBD-II code P-0568 will likely show up on the scanner.

Cruise control does not accelerate when pressing the “accel” button : Another common malfunction with the cruise control switch is when you press the accel button and the cruise control does not increase the vehicle's speed. This symptom may also be attributed to a faulty relay, cruise control servo, or control unit.

Cruise control does not return to original speed when pressing “res” button : It's also common for the res button to malfunction on the cruise control switch. This button is responsible for putting the cruise control back to the original setting if you had to temporarily deactivate the cruise control by tapping the brake pedal or engaging the clutch. If you press this button and the cruise control light is illuminated on the dashboard and the cruise control does not reset, the switch is usually the culprit.

Cruise control will not coast : A popular function of the cruise control is the “coast” function, which allows drivers to temporarily disable the throttle control while encountering traffic, going downhill, or when they need to reduce speed. If the driver presses the coast button and the cruise control still maintains acceleration, the cruise control switch may be faulty.

Part 2 of 3: Replacing the cruise control switch

How to Replace a Cruise Control Switch 2

In this instructional article, we'll outline the tools, steps and tips for replacing the cruise control switch system that is located on both sides of a steering wheel. This format is the most common found in vehicles made over the past decade. However, there are cruise control switches that are located as turn signal indicators or separate levers that are attached to the steering column. If you're vehicle has the cruise control switch located on the steering wheel, proceed to follow the instructions below. If it is located in a different area, consult your vehicle's service manual for precise instructions.

  • Warning : Do not attempt to complete this job if you do not have the right tools, as you will be removing the steering wheel air bag, which is a serious safety device that should not be tampered with uncarefully.

Materials Needed

  • Boxed end wrench and ratchet set with extension
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • Philips screwdriver
  • Replacement cruise control switch
  • Safety glasses

The steps needed to replace the switch on both sides of the steering wheel are similar if you have a cruise control switch cluster panel located on the same side of the steering wheel; the only difference is instead of removing two individual switches, you'll be removing only one. The connections and steps for removing them are virtually identical.

  • Note : As always, refer to your vehicle service manual for precise instructions.

Step 1: Disconnect the battery . Locate the vehicle's battery and disconnect the positive and negative battery cables before proceeding.

How to Replace a Cruise Control Switch 3

Step 2: Remove steering wheel column bolt covers . On both sides of the steering wheel are two plastic caps that need to be removed prior to taking the steering column cover off. Using a flat screwdriver, carefully pry the two covers off the side of the steering column. There will be a small tab where you can insert the blade of the screwdriver to remove them.

Step 3: Remove the steering wheel column bolts . Using a ratchet with a long extension and an 8mm socket, remove the two bolts inside the steering wheel column holes. Start by removing the driver side bolt first and then replace the passenger side bolt. Place the bolts and the steering wheel covers in a cup or bowl so they do not get lost.

Step 4: Remove the center air bag cluster . Grab the air bag cluster with both hands, and carefully remove it from the center of the steering wheel. This cluster is attached to an electrical connector and cluster, so be careful not to pull too hard.

Step 5: Remove the electrical connector from air bag cluster . Remove the electrical connector attached to the air bag cluster, so you can have a clear area to work. Carefully remove the electrical connector by pressing the side clips or tabs and pull from the hard plastic side areas (not the wires themselves). Once the electrical connector is removed, place the air bag cluster in a safe area.

How to Replace a Cruise Control Switch 4

Step 6: Remove the cruise control switch . The switches are connected to a bracket that is now accessible from either side after you removed the air bag. Using a Philips screwdriver, unscrew the bolts that are holding the cruise control switch onto the bracket. Usually the top one will have a ground wire attached underneath the bolt. Once the bolts have been removed, the cruise control switch is loose and you can remove it.

Step 7: Disconnect the cruise control electrical harness .

Step 8: Repeat the above step(s) with the other side cruise control switch .

Step 9: Replace the old cruise control switch with the new one . After both switches have been removed, reinstall the new switches by following the instructions in reverse order as listed below. Reinstall wiring harness and reattach the switch to the bracket, making sure you reinstall the ground wire under the top bolt. Complete this process on both sides.

Step 10: Reconnect the wiring harness to air bag cluster .

How to Replace a Cruise Control Switch

Step 11: Reconnect the air bag cluster . Place the air bag cluster straight in the same location it was originally sitting inside the steering wheel. Make sure to line up the holes where the bolts will go inside the side of the steering column.

Step 12: Replace the bolts on the steering column . As noted above, make sure the bolts line up and are inserted inside the bracket that holds the air bag cluster onto the steering wheel.

Step 13: Replace the two plastic caps .

Step 14: Reconnect battery cables .

Part 3 of 3: Test drive the vehicle

Before you begin to test out your new cruise control switch, a good rule of thumb is to make sure the primary switch (the on button) works. To test this, simply start your engine and press the "on" button on your cruise control switch. If the cruise control light illuminates on your dash or instrument cluster, the switch should be working fine.

The next step will be to complete a road test to truly examine if your repair was completed correctly. If you were having problems with the cruise control shutting off after a certain period of time, you'll want to test the vehicle for at least that same time period. Here are a few tips on how to complete the test drive.

Step 1: Start the vehicle . Let it warm up to operating temperature.

Step 2: Check the codes . Plug in the diagnostic scanner and download any existing error codes or clear the codes that showed up initially.

Step 3: Drive your vehicle to a highway . Find a place where you can drive smoothly for at least 10 to 15 minutes with the cruise control on.

Step 4: Set your cruise control at 55 or 65 MPH . Press the off button, and if the cruise control light on the dash turns off and the system shuts down, this button is working correctly.

Step 5: Reset your cruise control . Once it is set, press the accel button to see if the cruise control increases the speed of the vehicle. If it does, the switch is good.

Step 6: Test the coast button . While traveling at speed and with very little traffic on the road, press the coast button and determine if the throttle is disengaged. If it is, release the coast button and verify that the cruise control returns to its setting.

Step 7: Reset the cruise control again and drive for 10 to 15 miles . Verify that the cruise control does not shut off automatically.

Replacing the cruise control switch is a rather simple repair. However, if you've read these instructions and still don't feel 100% confident in completing it, please contact one of YourMechanic’s local ASE certified mechanics to perform the cruise control switch replacement for you.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro review: Our expert's take

By Aaron Bragman

The verdict: Featuring all the drawbacks and none of the visceral pleasures of more powerful Camaros, the turbocharged four-cylinder RS model is not our preferred version.

Versus the competition: The four-cylinder Ford Mustang EcoBoost is more comfortable, upscale and entertaining to drive than the four-cylinder Camaro, but the Chevy beats the aging Hyundai Genesis Coupe in the value department. The Dodge Challenger is much larger than the Chevy, and while it’s more comfortable and useful, it’s not nearly as athletic as the Camaro.

The Chevrolet Camaro received its first major update in years for 2016, and we have thoroughly enjoyed it in both SS V-8 (see the review ) and RS V-6 forms. Both of those models are outstanding performance cars; the SS even won our 2016 V-8 Muscle Car Challenge . Now a third powertrain has joined the lineup at the entry level – a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, seen in other GM products such as the Cadillac ATS and CTS. But with 275 horsepower on tap, is it still accurate to call the turbo Camaro a muscle car? Exterior & Styling This actually may be the best-looking version in the Camaro lineup. Start with the plain-Jane 1LT model, which has no fake hood scoops or other baubles, and add the RS Package with blacked-out 20-inch wheels, LED taillights, bi-xenon headlights, unique grille and subtle rear spoiler. Paint it all in one of the most vivid reds I’ve ever seen, and it becomes a bit of modern sculpture – sleek, low, wide, with some beautiful hood and fender lines blending into its muscular haunches. It looks like a proper muscle car, able to take on the toughest, fastest, meanest Detroit offerings. How It Drives Unfortunately, one press of the starter button reveals that it’s not ready to do any such thing. This version of the Camaro is powered by a 275-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. It produces 295 pounds-feet of torque — more than many V-8 engines made not even a decade ago — and is good enough to scoot the Camaro from zero-to-60 mph in just 5.4 seconds with the optional eight-speed automatic transmission, according to Chevrolet. The engine feels similar to the Ford Mustang’s EcoBoost 2.3-liter turbo four, in that most of that torque comes on in the midrange. Plant your foot and row through the surprisingly clunky six-speed manual gearbox, and you’ll notice the greatest acceleration happens as the needle climbs above 3,000 rpm, but the small four-cylinder then runs out of steam at higher revs. It’s great around town, and given the lightness of the Camaro platform and its excellent handling characteristics (two descriptors it still amazes me to write), it makes for an entertaining sports car.

But it comes with no drama, meaning the good kind. Aside from the car’s looks, the powertrain provides no thrills. There’s no aural punch to the exhaust soundtrack, no visceral grunt to match the car’s appearance – close your eyes (as a passenger) and you may as well be riding in a Chevy Cruze. The Mustang EcoBoost has received some flak for actually piping a soundtrack through the car’s stereo as the engine revs build, and now we see what happens when this feature isn’t included – it’s too quiet, and the idea that you’re driving a racy sports car isn’t communicated well to the driver. It’s still quick, easily a rival for the rear-wheel-drive Hyundai Genesis Coupe and much quicker than the Subaru BRZ, but the Mustang is more satisfying to drive. The Mustang driver doesn’t feel like he or she sacrificed too much in opting for the powerful EcoBoost turbo four, while the turbo Camaro driver questions whether maybe the raucous V-6 would have been a better idea.

Handling and ride quality still are strong suits for this base-model Camaro, with its conventional shock absorbers instead of the fancier Magnetic Ride Control that’s available on the SS V-8. The steering is communicative, with a direct feel and excellent feedback, while the presence of less mass up front versus the V-8 model gives it even better balance, with crisp turn-in to fast corners. The RS model I drove also had the Brembo brake package, with four-piston front calipers that felt firmer than those in Camaros I’ve driven previously.

You’ll get some benefit at the pump for opting for the base engine, with the Camaro turbo rated at 21/30/24 mpg city/highway/combined for the manual transmission, 22/31/25 mpg for the automatic. That represents a significant improvement over the 18/27/21 mpg for the V-6 manual, 19/28/23 mpg for the V-6 auto Camaro. It’s not as good as the Mustang EcoBoost, however, which rings in at 22/31/25 mpg for the manual, 21/32/25 for the automatic. The Dodge Challenger’s base V-6 can be had only with an eight-speed automatic, but those extra gears help it get 19/30/23 mpg, while the Hyundai Genesis Coupe with its 3.8-liter V-6 isn’t as good as any of them, rated at 17/24/19 mpg for the manual, 16/25/19 mpg for the automatic. Interior Inside, the base model Camaro suffers from a lack of soft materials, as we’ve noted in previous impressions of the V-6 model. While the rearrangement of the interior’s controls, dials and displays definitely has resulted in a cabin that’s more appealing, the atrocious outward visibility and lack of headroom crimp our enthusiasm for the car in any of its forms. The 1LT model gets standard power cloth seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and not much else. Thankfully the interior  looks better in the jet black of this test vehicle than it did in the lighter gray of the V-6 model from our recent comparison test, but it still lacks the soft panels, splashes of color and nicer materials of the SS model.  Ergonomics & Electronics The Camaro comes with a standard 7-inch touch-screen in the center console, angled strangely downward, an orientation that I assume helps reduce screen glare in the Camaro’s convertible versions. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included with that screen. They also now both are included with the available 8-inch MyLink multimedia system, and are a welcome addition – not that Chevrolet’s MyLink is bad. MyLink is well designed and now operates quickly and easily, but having the option of smartphone interfaces is a positive development. Originally, only CarPlay was available for the 8-inch system, but if you find an early 2016 model, Android Auto can be added via a dealer-performed software update. It should be noted that the Technology Package that gives you the bigger screen does not include navigation on the 1LT – for that, you have to bump up to the 2LT trim level, or rely on Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Most vehicle controls are easy to use and now feature some creativity, such as the climate controls integrated into the main vents. The only negative part of the Camaro’s controls is the location of the steering-wheel buttons for volume and track selection behind the spokes, which puts them below the 9 and 3 o’clock positions, awkward locations for your hands. Cargo & Storage The trunk space in the Camaro is laughable, especially considering its competition’s capabilities. Chevy gives you just 9.1 cubic feet of trunk space, but a tiny trunk opening means only small roll-aboard suitcases will fit. At least the volume is expandable thanks to folding rear seats. The Mustang also is small, but still bigger than the Camaro, with 13.5 cubic feet, while the Genesis isn’t much better than the Camaro, with 10.0 cubic feet. The big boy on the block is the Dodge Challenger, with its comparably enormous 16.2 cubic feet. Safety The Camaro has not been crash-tested as of publication. With the new platform come some new features, but many of the new electronic minders aren’t available on the lowly 1LT trim level. Blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert aren’t available unless you step up to the 2LT model and then opt for the Convenience and Lighting Package. There’s no adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning or automatic emergency braking. Aside from the airbags, a backup camera is the only other safety feature included at the 1LT trim level. See the standard features for yourself here . Value in Its Class Like the Mustang EcoBoost, the Camaro 1LT RS turbo is a smashing performance value. It starts at $26,695 including destination, and the RS Package adds $1,950 for 20-inch wheels, a unique grille and spoiler, bi-xenon headlights and LED taillights. The Technology Package is $800 and serves up the 8-inch touch-screen with a Bose audio system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The $458 Heavy Duty Cooling and Brake Package brings Brembo brakes to the party, while another $100 paints those 20-inch aluminum wheels in gloss black. The total for this well-equipped machine comes to $30,030, which is a very reasonable price for all of the capability of the Camaro turbo.

The main competitor would seem to be the Ford Mustang EcoBoost, with its own four-cylinder turbo motor, but some might make the case that the base model Mustang V-6 is the more logical choice. Good luck finding that model anywhere other than a rental fleet, however, as Ford stocks three times as many EcoBoost and V-8 models on dealer lots. The EcoBoost engine is larger than the Camaro’s, a turbocharged 2.3-liter making 310 hp, with a starting price of $26,545. But add some performance goodies such as the $1,995 EcoBoost Performance Package and you’ll still be out the door for less than $29,000 with a quicker, tauter, more aggressive-feeling and sounding sports coupe, albeit with less electronics content than the Camaro.

The Dodge Challenger competes on price, starting at $27,990. It’s not nearly the athlete that the Camaro is, but it’s considerably more comfortable and has real room for four people and an enormous trunk. If you want something compact and sporty, but still rear-wheel drive and with room for four, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe is your only real option in this price class. Starting at $27,845, it features a much more powerful 3.8-liter V-6 and distinctive, if not exactly pretty, exterior styling. It hasn’t seen an update in a while, so it doesn’t feature the latest in multimedia technology or electronic safety systems. Compare all four competitors here .

Considering the turbo Camaro against the Mustang EcoBoost, Genesis or even the Subaru BRZ reveals the source of my dissatisfaction with the car – it’s not the Camaro’s performance that’s lacking, as it is genuinely quick, tossable and fun to drive. But the compromises one makes to buy a Camaro (terrible outward visibility, a lack of headroom, cramped backseat passenger space, very little usable cargo room) aren’t offset by the blinding speed, a ferocious engine soundtrack or incomparable track performance you get with the V-8 and even the V-6 models. It feels as if you’ve bought a Chevy Cruze that’s disguised itself as a Camaro, and that’s just not as satisfying.

I saved for years to afford this car when I retired at age 59. The fun part is driving though West Virginia with all of the mountains and challenging it on the sharp curves. So fun!

GCT M/S Tikhi Don - St. Petersburg to Moscow

Cool Cruiser

This is a review of a St. Petersburg to Moscow river cruise from 5/31/2012 - 6/14/2012 with Grand Circle Travel. I'll divide the review into sections starting with the ship so folks can jump to those sections of interest & ignore what isn't pertinent to them. For an excellent discussion on pre-trip planning, visa issues, comments on various cruise lines, this link:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1559518

will give you all the details you need. I'll not repeat it here.

So, let's get to the specifics:

Ship : Tikhi Don is owned by Grand Circle Travel (GCT) and is one of two ships, the other being M/V Rossia they operate between Moscow & St. Petersburg. All the cabins are identical: 146 square feet with one window that opens, situated on 3 decks. The only difference is location on the ship. The cabins were clean as were the attached bathrooms. Storage space was adequate for two weeks. There is one 120V and one 220V electrical outlet in the cabin as well as a 115V electrical outlet in the bathroom. I purchased a 4 outlet power strip specifically for this trip to plug in rechargeable digital camera batteries as well as a cell phone. The ship has an elevator near the reception desk forward that services Decks 1, 2, and 3. There is a double stairway in the after end of the ship that runs from the Main Deck to Decks 2, 3, and 4. All other stairways are external and serve all 4 decks. We had about 206 passengers embarked and about 100 staff, so the ratio of staff to cruisers was pretty high. It seems that all river ships operating in Russia carry about 200 or so customers which make them quite a bit larger than the average European waterways river ship. Since they have far fewer bridges to deal with in terms of height, and water depths are somewhat deeper than European rivers, they can and do take advantage of that to leverage a larger number of customers. That doesn't make it bad; it just makes it different. Tikhi Don draws about 9 feet of water which I suspect is about average for a Russian river cruiser. The ship has two bars, one on the 3rd deck forward (Tsar Bar) and one on the 4th deck aft (Presidents Bar). The restaurant is located on the 2nd deck aft and is used for the breakfast buffet and the sit down daily lunches & dinners. One disadvantage to my way of thinking was the sit down lunch. When we've cruised on Viking, they offered a light buffet lunch in the bar/lounge and a sit down lunch in the restaurant. That gave one some options which weren't available with GCT. Again, not necessarily bad; just different. Each cabin is equipped with a flat panel LCD TV with various satellite channels available depending upon the location of the ship at the time. There also were 3 different movie channels showing a different movie each day. Since we didn’t watch TV, I can only surmise it must have worked okay as we did not hear any complaints. While each cabin has individual air conditioning controls, they didn’t appear to function very effectively and the cabin remained around 68-70 degrees Fahrenheit at all times. There is a separate heating unit mounted beneath the window on the outside bulkhead which proved very useful on some of the colder mornings we experienced during the cruise. The cruise covers 829 miles between St. Petersburg and Moscow, and consists of several lakes, rivers and canals including the transit of 16 locks.

Travelers: One significant difference I noted was the average age of the passengers was somewhat older than we had previously experienced with Viking in Europe. I would guess that average age was around mid-70s; some younger, and some a good bit older. We had several veterans of WW2 embarked and I can only hope I'm as spry as they were when I'm that age. They also are very loyal to GCT. Those folks who had previously traveled 3 or more times with GCT or their companion company, Overseas Adventure Travel were identified with a gold name badge. I'd estimate that at least 50% of the embarked travelers fell into this category. This was a very seasoned group of world travelers. Few on the trip were making their 1st river cruise and even fewer were traveling with GCT for the 1st time (we fell into that category). The tours generally involved quite a bit of walking and a not so slow pace, but most everyone managed to keep at it, and few opted out of the walking tours. I'll discuss those in more detail later in this post.

Ship Staff: The staff was quite young (mid to late 20s mostly), inexperienced, but always willing to help. Their command of English was generally very limited although I expect that will improve as the season wears on. Their English was way better than my Cyrillic so they get an A+ for effort. The cruise is managed by a Cruise Director who spoke idiomatic English. The ship's Captain was the most personable Captain I have ever sailed with on a cruise ship. He spoke good English, greeted all the travelers as they debarked for each tour, met each traveler at the gangplank when they returned, and along with the Cruise Director and Hospitality Manager stood on the pier and waved goodbye to every bus that departed. I'm used to the Captain putting in a brief appearance at the Welcome & Farewell Cocktail parties, then disappearing for rest of the cruise. This was a novel & most welcome change.

We were divided into 6 groups of about 32-35 people, assigned a Tour Director who worked exclusively with that group for the entire cruise. Very occasionally for an optional tour, the groups would be combined to keep the numbers about the same, but basically, you functioned within your assigned group. The Tour Directors all had majored in foreign languages at the University and had anywhere from two to as many as eight years with GCT. They all spoke idiomatic English and did a great job of keeping track of their charges. I liken managing U.S. tour groups to herding cats and these folks were always cheerful, ready to answer any question, and resolve any problem. The wait staff in the dining room had limited English, but knew enough to converse with the passengers with regard to the menu & was a hustling young group of Russians. They were extremely pleasant to deal with.

Food on Board: In general the meals were quite good. Breakfast was served buffet style and one always had the opportunity to order an omelet or eggs of any style. There also was a special breakfast order each day. They also included the European breakfast meats and other items common on European river cruise ships. Service was quick and efficient. Restaurant seating included tables for 2, 4, 6 or 10 passengers so there was a wide variety of seating. Lunches & dinners would be best described as Russian modified for American taste. As I remarked previously, all lunches were sit down, formal service with soup, entre (including a vegetarian selection). Salad bar and dessert. Dinners consisted of an appetizer, followed by a soup course, entre (again including a vegetarian choice), and dessert. At dinner, there was always available salmon or chicken breast with a baked potato and steamed vegetables for those who did not fancy the main course. Food was served hot when appropriate and cold when in order. Service was friendly and efficient. Even with 200 people sitting down to eat, there was no sense of “steam table” cooking. With the exception of two meals ashore, all meals were served onboard. In the event of an evening tour such as the Moscow circus or the St. Petersburg ballet, an early dinner was served to those attending the event, followed by a late night heavy snack following return onboard. While I did not eat very many lunches, my wife tried most of them and said the food was very good. We found the dinners to be tasty and a nice introduction to Russian cooking, including the famous Russian stroganoff which is not served over noodles as it is in the U.S., but over spaetzle or mashed potatoes which we were told is common in Russia. Early bird coffee was available from 6:00-7:00AM and also throughout the day at the coffee station on the main deck. Lunch was served at either noon or 1:00PM depending on the tour schedule, with dinner at 7:00PM.

Onboard Activities: There was never a shortage of things to do onboard, but all were voluntary so you could participate in as few or as many as you wished. They featured the usual port talks, introduction to the Russian language, lectures on Russian handicrafts, vodka tastings, blini parties, pelmeni (dumpling) cooking class, and hand painting of Russian Matryoshka (nesting) dolls. We also noted several spontaneous bridge, cribbage, and canasta card games in progress at various times.

There is a large, well stocked gift store on the ship, operated as a separate concession. My wife found the prices for souvenirs of all types were generally better than souvenir shops ashore. They accept major credit cards or roubles. You cannot charge items from the store to your shipboard account.

Tours: There were a limited number of optional (extra cost) tours available. In St. Petersburg, that included:

Rivers & Canals of St. Petersburg

Yusopov Palace

St. Petersburg Ballet

Peterhof Gardens

In Petrozavodosk: Karelian Folk Show

Zlatoust Singers

Jewish Heritage of Moscow

Tretyakov Gallery

You can view the details of these optional tours on the GCT website: http://www.gct.com

under the Russian river cruise itinerary.

All passengers are provided with a pair of head phones & a battery powered receiver to provide the ability to listen to the tour guide while still wandering about the particular venue. The system works perfectly and depending upon location & interference such as walls, floors, and the like is crystal clear up to 100 feet from the tour guide. I have used these systems on other tours and would never consider a tour/cruise that did not employ this technology.

We took the Rivers & Canals of St. Petersburg tour which entailed taking a canal boat up & down the various rivers & canals running through St. Petersburg. It lasted approximately 90 minutes with a well informed local guide who commented on what we were seeing. It was interesting and informative and gives you another whole perspective on St. Petersburg than from a city bus tour.

We also went on the Peterhof gardens tour which unfortunately, did not go as well. The morning tour for that day was Peter & Paul Fortress which was really not that interesting and turned out to be just another church tour. However, because of the distance from where the boat moored to the fortress, then into St. Petersburg for lunch, the morning and part of the afternoon was pretty well shot by the time we departed for Peterhof. Peterhof is a good 45 minute drive from St. Petersburg; so consequently, it was well after 2:00PM when we arrived at the gardens. I’d like to say the local guide tried to cram what could easily have been a 4 hour tour into something less than two hours. So, we consequently were trying to set land speed records for walking tours as she was determined to show us as many of the Peterhof fountains as possible, and there are more than a few. My wife is a bit slow of foot as she has limited walking capacity so she was hard pressed to keep up. I, on the other hand, wanted more time to take pictures of the fountains and didn’t appreciate being rushed from spot to spot. Fortunately, our tour director Alex was particularly solicitous of my wife and made sure we could cut some corners and get ahead of the tour where necessary. Unfortunately, the local tour guide was annoyed when told to slow down and became somewhat hostile. The tour ends at the Peterhof palace which has a very large number of very beautiful fountains, all in gold leaf and is a photographer’s dream. It easily could have been worth an hour or more of picture taking opportunities. While I do understand some folks just want to check the block of having seen it and move on, there are, I think, a larger number of us who don’t expect to see those things again and want to take full advantage of the picture taking opportunities.

St. Petersburg: We spent 4 days in St. Petersburg not counting the day of arrival. The 1st full day, we had a city bus tour which included a stop & tour of St. Isaac’s Cathedral, and an approximately two hour visit to the famed Hermitage Art Museum with an option to stay for an additional 90 minutes, On Day 2, we had Catherine’s Palace & Park Tour, an offsite lunch paid for by GCT followed by the optional Rivers & Canals Tour, Day 4 was the Peter & Paul Fortress, again followed by lunch (this time on your own) followed by the optional Peterhof Gardens tour. On Day 3 of the visit, there were optional tours available of Yusopov Palace and the St. Petersburg ballet (evening). The boat was moored about 1 hour from downtown, depending on traffic, as the city authorities do not allow the riverboats to moor downtown. This caused some angst among those taking their 1st river cruise as they assumed this was standard. Of course, it’s not, and in fact, almost all European river cruises including Paris moor almost in the heart of the city. However, for those with free time and a little bit of adventurism, the subway took you downtown in less than 40 minutes. There is a bus from the head of the pier which costs 30 roubles (in early June 2012, roubles were 32.5 to 1 USD). That dropped you at the nearest metro entrance where 25 roubles and 5 stops later, landed you in the heart of Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg’s equivalent to Times Square in NY or Michigan Avenue in Chicago. The metro is clean, no graffiti in the stations or on the cars, efficiently run and very safe. To return to the ship, just reverse the process. Once downtown, there are many attractions within easy walking distance such as the statue of the Bronze Horseman, a tribute from Catherine the Great to Peter the Great and the Church of our Savior on the Spilled Blood on which site, Tsar Alexander II was murdered by an assassin on 1 March 1881.

This was our 2nd time in St. Petersburg as we were there on an ocean cruise of the Baltics in 2003 when the city celebrated its 300th anniversary. It is to my mind, much more European than Russian with the latest fashions on display, many, many outdoor restaurant cafes and a mostly young, apparently well off population (at least during a business day).

We had previously been to Catherine’s Palace and the Hermitage and enjoyed returning to both places. St. Isaac’s is very impressive, but unfortunately, it is crowded and pickpockets are afoot. Several men & at least 1 woman had wallets stolen in the crowds so for them, not so much fun. Peter and Paul Fortress from a historical perspective is important, but rather unimpressive.

We visited St. Petersburg during the period of the summer referred to as “White Nights” which are quite famous. Sunrise occurs about 4:30AM and sunset at 11:15PM. Since winters are long, cold, and sometimes very harsh, the many hours of sunlight are greatly appreciated and folks go out to stroll, especially on Nevsky Prospekt well into the evening hours enjoying the many parks and recreation areas throughout the city.

Svir Stroi: This is a small village of about 600 people located on the Svir River. They have the requisite souvenir shops, but the highlight of the stop was the visit to the home of a Russian villager. Our opportunity came to visit the wife of a local employee of the hydro electric plant. We visited her home and were served tea & pirozhki’s (Russian tea cakes). With the able help of our tour director, Tanya who translated, the lady explained her daily life in the village and the challenges ordinary people now face compared to the days of the Soviet Union. This is also where we first encountered the fierce Russian mosquitoes or as the tour directors called them, the KGB mosquitoes. They’re big, they bite and they fly around over the 3 months of summer. Mosquito repellent does, however, work when liberally applied.

Petrozavodsk: This port city on Lake Onega which is the second largest lake in Europe, only surpassed by Lake Ladoga, included a bus tour as well as a visit to the memorial to Russian’s Unknown Soldier from World War II, and a tour of the local market. It is the industrial, cultural, and scientific center of the Republic of Karelia. The visit also included an optional tour to a Karelian folk show which we opted not to attend.

Kizhi (Kee-shee) Island: This small island in the center of Lake Onega is home to the oldest known wooden church in Russia, the Church of Transfiguration which features 22 timbered onion shaped domes. The church was assembled without the use of a single metal nail and is currently undergoing extensive renovation. The stop also featured a “Fishing with the Ship’s Captain & Staff” for those who are ardent anglers. Fishing apparently wasn’t so successful as we did not have fish on the menu that evening!

Goritzy/Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery: Goritsky is just another tiny town, but the monastery was built in 1397 and had close connections with Ivan the Terrible. At one time, over 200 monks lived in the monastery, but with the Russian revolution and the harsh suppression of religion in Russia, it deteriorated significantly and now houses only 6 monks. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, restoration efforts have begun and the museum features an impressive collection of Russian Orthodox icons.

Uglich: The last city we visited prior to Moscow is located on the Volga River. Cruising on the river as you come onto Uglich is very impressive. The Kremlin (or fortress) has no exterior walls so the many colored churches and domes make great picture opportunities. The very large Cathedral of Transfiguration looms over the town while the Church of St. Dmitry on the Blood with its rich red walls and blue onion domes offer a sharp contrast. Souvenir and shops selling all sorts of goods line the route from the ship’s berth to the main street of Uglich. We were told by the local guide that as many as 7 to 8 river cruise ships a day visit Uglich during the summer. They also were having a display of lacquer and paper Mache’ boxes for sale at very Western prices. Enameled watches are also a specialty of Uglich. We were treated to a short concert by a group of male classically trained singers who rendered several Russian songs a capella during our visit.

Moscow: We arrived in Moscow about 3 hours late because of heavy fog the previous evening while transiting the Moscow Canal. The river authorities do not allow movement in the canal during heavy fog, so we waited out the down time in one of the locks. The ship moored a good ways from downtown as the city authorities do not allow river cruise ships downtown, the same rule as St. Petersburg. Moscow is a city of 11.5 million people and traffic can be a nightmare. However, we were fortunate to arrive on a Monday before a national holiday (Day of Russia) on Tuesday and Moscovites are like people everywhere; they angle to take the day before a big holiday off. So, the traffic to downtown was pretty light and we made up some time on the city tour which started in the famous Red Square outside the Kremlin walls. The tour included a walk around Saint Basil’s Cathedral which is actually a museum, then on to the GUM department store which resembles a U.S. mall. We also walked past a “Historic Toilet” located in Gum’s that I believe was the 1st indoor lavatory in a Moscow department store. (Use of the WC was 84 roubles for those interested; I took a pass). We also went for a ride on the famed Moscow metro where many of the stations are elaborately decorated in frescoes, busts representing the struggle of the common man, and other adornments of the Russian revolution. As in St. Petersburg, the metro is clean (no graffiti in the stations or on the cars) and very safe.

The next day was the national holiday so our tours steered us quite far from Red Square (where demonstrations were purported to occur against the Presidential election recently completed) and out to Sparrow Hills which is a high priced area of the city. We also toured the New Maiden cemetery where various Russian notables such as Boris Yeltsin and Nikita Khrushchev are buried. The evening tour involved a visit to the Moscow circus which has been in continuous operation since 1980. A fun time of clowns, jugglers, trained poodles, bears, a lion taming act and culminated with a trapeze performance by 5 daring men & 1 woman.

The following day was a tour inside the Kremlin walls and to one of the 5 churches located inside the walls. I found it ironic that 5 churches would be allowed to exist following the revolution, but many things in Russia are strange, this only being one example. We also toured the Kremlin armory which contains the Tsar’s Crown Jewels, armor and armaments of the 16th- 18th century, many Tsarina coronation and wedding dresses as well as a very extensive display of Faberge eggs. The tour concluded with lunch at Moscow’s Hard Rock Café and time to tour Arbat Street which is a pedestrian only street in the heart of Moscow.

We had family obligations that required us to cut the last full day off the cruise and return home via direct flight from Moscow to Dulles International.

Final Observations: It was a very interesting and different river cruise for us. Because the distances are so vast, there is a lot more down time on this cruise than one in European waters, but Grand Circle can make it as busy or as relaxed as you like. The meals were comparable to those served on our other river cruises for quantity and quality. There are slightly more optional tours than with some other companies, but on the other hand, some of the included tours were excellent. St. Petersburg is a great city and one I’d be pleased to visit again; Moscow, not so much. Grand Circle is certainly worth your consideration as a cruise line as the prices are competitive with all other Russian river cruises. We did book our air through Grand Circle which I’m normally reluctant to do, but the routing was the same that I would have chosen had I done my own booking and the pricing was better than I could do on my own, especially considering what GCT would have charged for transfers to and from the ship. We did not purchase travel insurance through GCT as I found we could do better by shopping around over the Internet.

We did this trip in 2004, aboard the chartered Nicholay Chernychevski, before Grand Circle had put the Tikhi Don into service. This was an excellent review and brings back memories. Please post it under Travelers Reviews on http://www.gct.com on this trip.

H2Otstr

Thank you for the informative review. I am taking this tour in mid August. I will print what you wrote so that I can refer to it as I do some of my planning.

How many people were in your "group" ? Did you take the pretrip to Helsinki and Tallinn?

We had about 32 people in our group. I don't know what, if any criteria, other than numbers were used to make up the groups. We did not take any pre or post trips with this cruise.

  • Novodevichy Monastery;
  • Kiev railway station;
  • Europe Square;
  • Moscow City Hall;
  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

camaroMoscow

Generally, there aren’t that many american cars in the mix. This video is the exception because it pretty much focuses on a stock ZL1 against everyone else. It gets it whooped a lot (it’s stock for chrissakes), but there are some races in here where the Camaro does almost shockingly well. Check it out.
