Crystal Onyx is one of Kentucky’s premier show caves with spectacular beauty throughout. Our cave, located on Prewitts Knob is a living, growing cave.   You will be walking among a vast and diversified array of formations up close throughout the cave on your one hour, one half mile tour.   Tour group size is small with a comfortable pace and plenty of stops so you can see all of nature’s wonders, take pictures, relax and enjoy.

Your adventure begins outside with a short walk to one of the many sink holes and caves on our property. You will descend down safe concrete and steel steps into a well lit speleothem rich cave. The meandering trails have recently been renovated with groomed crushed limestone, new steps and handrails.  The average temperature in the cave is 58 degrees F or 14.5 C.    Crystal Onyx is family owned and operated with a laid back approach and unscripted tours.

Please check out our excellent Google and TripAdvisor reviews. But, don’t be confused, there is another local cave using a similar name. We are Crystal Onyx Cave, established in 1960.

One of our reviews: Beautiful Close-up Experience! “This cave blew me away from my very first steps into the dramatic entry way. The walkways and lighting are beautifully done throughout the cave, with amazing features at every turn. Our small group was privileged to have one of the owners as guide. His commentary reflected the joy and pride he has in this special place. I’ve toured several caves, including the nearby bigger one, but none has captured my heart like this one. There’s so much bang for your buck to be enjoyed here!”

4 caves to check out in Bowling Green, Kentucky

May 16, 2017 Shannan Younger Leave a Comment

Bowling Green, Kentucky offers some pretty amazing subterranean adventures for families. Here are 4 caves to visit in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

cave tours bowling green ky

Mammoth Cave National Park

I know, this seems like the obvious one, but it’s absolutely worth a visit. There’s a reason that it’s been a tourist attraction for 200 years. It’s one of America’s oldest tourist attractions, right behind Niagara Falls. And Mammoth Cave National Park is home to the world’s longest known cave system, with more than 400 miles explored and reportedly “no end in sight.”

cave tours bowling green ky

A cave tour is a must-do, and don’t be afraid to go all in. My group took the Frozen Niagara tour, which was great. It was an hour and doable for most ages and abilities. The time in the cave just flew by. We all agreed that we would have loved to do a longer tour. Next time!

Tip: Don’t be afraid to engage your guide. Our guide, Rick (he was National Park Service ranger so a real life Ranger Rick!) was full of fascinating information about the cave, its inhabitants, its geological history, and the etymology of caves (the Greek word for cave also translates to “nostril” because caves inhale or exhale depending on the difference in temperature above and below ground). Seriously, Rick covered everything .

I even took a selfie with him at the end of our cave tour when we were above ground.

Lost River Cave

Walking through a cave is one thing, but boating through it is another. The only place you can do so in Kentucky is Lost River Cave in Bowling Green. It’s not just a few feet, either. You can sail almost a mile into Lost River Cave.

4 caves to visit in Bowling Green, Kentucky, including Lost River Cave Boat Tour

You can’t tell when you see the sign along the road, but this place is huge, both in space and in history.

Tip: The trails make for some lovely walking that family-friendly. Also, don’t miss the butterfly habitat.

The National Corvette Museum

You may not think of cars and caves as going together because, well, they don’t. But when a giant sink hole opened underneath the National Corvette Museum a few years ago, it sent cars tumbling more than thirty feet into the caves below the building.

Corvette Museum Sinkhole Exhibit

The good news is that no one was hurt and everything is completely safe now. The museum turned the devastating experience into a learning opportunity. On the two year anniversary of the event, it opened an exhibit dedicated to the sinkhole. Not only do they have some of the cars on display so you can see the after effects, there is also a simulator of what it would have looked like and sounded like from below ground.  You can see where the sinkhole was and where the cave is thanks to marking on the floor.

Tip: Kids really love the crane game that’s like a video game on a large screen with the premise of helping pull cars out of the cave. And see if any owners are picking up new Corvettes at the museum – it’s an option and it’s very fun to see their excitement at sitting in their car for the very first time.

Bonus: Salt Cave – aka the Mom Cave

The  Be Happy Yoga and Salt Cave  may not be underground, but it’s a fun, different kind of cave, one that is very relaxing and good for you, too.

cave tours bowling green ky

If there are man caves, some time relaxing in the Salt Cave is like being in a mom cave. While there are weekly options for bringing kids, allow me to suggest that moms send the rest of the family to search for white squirrels on the Western Kentucky University campus or just head to Lost River Pizza which is a few doors away. Enjoy some relaxation time. The zero gravity chair makes it feel like you’re floating and the salt can offer numerous health benefits. It’s your vacation, too, right?

Disclosure: I was hosted at some of these caves but received no compensation for writing this post and all opinions are my own.

The Coolest Cave Tour in Kentucky is Bowling Green’s Lost River Cave

What we’ve missed the most over the past two years and change is the thrill of exploring a new destination, which is why we were extra excited to arrive in Bowling Green two weeks ago. Not only were there pops of color around every bend, Corvettes that can clip up to 110mph without even breaking a sweat and a charming square peppered with a wealth of small businesses, but Bowling Green is also home to Lost River Cave , which boasts the coolest cave tour in Kentucky.

What to Do in Bowling Green: Take a Tour of Lost River Cave

Our visit to Kentucky was part of a project with Visit Bowling Green. All opinions are our own.

Getting to Bowling Green

We pass Bowling Green every time we drive from Tennessee up to Kentucky and on into Cincinnati, but we’ve never stopped until now. Bowling Green is just one hour north of Nashville, making it an easy destination to anyone already in Tennessee or flying into our state via its largest transportation hub, Nashville International Airport (BNA). Bowling Green is also 123 miles (just under 2 hours) south of Louisville and 161 miles (2.5 hours) southwest of Lexington.

What to Do in Bowling Green: Take a Tour of Lost River Cave

The origins of Lost River Cave

While, sure, Mammoth Cave may be the largest in the state, the coolest cave in Kentucky we’ve had a chance to tour by boat is the seven-mile-long ecosystem known as Lost River Cave in Bowling Green. Not only do you get to see the stunning land that surrounds Lost River Cave, but you also get to climb aboard a boat and cruise through a subterranean wonderland.

What to Do in Bowling Green: Take a Tour of Lost River Cave

Historically, the cave was used by Native Americans, European settlers and Civil War soldiers, both with the Union and the Confederacy. It also doubled as a hideout for Jesse James and a vibrant underground nightclub for the swinging 1930’s generation. The cave’s history dates back as far as 8500 B.C.—the Native Americans used the cave for shelter and also buried the dead there—but some of the county’s earliest industries, too, used the cave entrance in the 18th century.

What to Do in Bowling Green: Take a Tour of Lost River Cave

Not jiving with the idea of going underground? That’s fine—there’s plenty to do above ground via the 72-acre park and education center that rounds out Lost River Cave’s multifaceted offerings.

What to Do in Bowling Green: Take a Tour of Lost River Cave

The Lost River Cave tour

The guided tour of Lost River Cave takes a little more than an hour and requires a bit of a walk, starting with a 20-minute stroll along the river’s edge while listening to science facts and history of the attraction.

Lost River Cave in Bowling Green, Kentucky

Once you make your way to the mouth of the cave, your tour guide will load your group onto a boat for a 25-minute ride through the cave. The cave tour is available to all age groups; on our tour, participants ranged in age from 3 to 70, and each person was given a flotation device to sit on even though the water depth in the cave is only five feet at its deepest. You’ll want to wear sturdy shoes since footing in the cave can be unsteady.

Lost River Cave in Bowling Green, Kentucky

There’s plenty of wildlife inhabiting the cave that you might just see if you keep your eyes peeled; our sightings includes crickets, crayfish and raccoons, but there’s also a species of fish that live in the cave and can only be found there since they are adaptive.

cave tours bowling green ky

The grounds also include 2.5 miles of nature trail and 72 acres of park, so whether you choose to do the Lost River Cave tour or not, you can still enjoy walking around and soaking in the scenery. The walking trails and Nature Playscape are open year round, while other attractions like gem mining (March to November), the Scarecrow Trail (October) and the Butterfly Habitat (Memorial Day to Labor Day) are seasonal. There’s also a great gift shop where I stocked up on dinosaur merch and trash panda toys for my niece and nephew.

Due to the slope down to the cave and the fact that there are stairs and a bit of walking involved, if you have mobility issues, the tour isn’t for you. However, you can still enjoy the grounds and the area around the visitors center, which also has a free video tour of the cave.

Lost River Cave in Bowling Green, Kentucky

Lost River Cave is managed by the Friends of the Lost River, Inc. , a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that was formed in 1990 after Western Kentucky University was bequeathed the property by the owners in 1986. The site had been used as a dumping ground for decades and was in a serious state of neglect when the university acquired the original 25 acres. Inspired by a love of the land and a vision for a sustainable future, the organization has steadily purchased adjacent land to expand its footprint and to prevent commercial development around this natural resource. With more than 100,000 visitors a year and not a speck of trash within the watershed, it’s a joy to see this land successfully preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Other things to know about the Lost River Cave experience

Are you claustrophobic and think you can’t do this cave tour? As a fellow claustrophobe, let me just tell you: You absolutely can. The beginning of the tour requires you duck to squeeze between the narrow part of the cave entry until you’re on the other side, but once you make it past that, the cave is, well, cavernous. There’s plenty of breathing space, and while it’s dark, there are permanent lights that will keep you feeling sane.

What to Do in Bowling Green: Take a Tour of Lost River Cave

The cave tours are offered multiple times a day nearly every day of the year, save major holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas weekend and New Year’s Eve. While you can walk in and get on a tour, you may find yourself waiting, so it’s best to make a reservation in advance as Lost River Cave is a popular attraction with a lot of demand, particularly in the heat of summer because the temperature down there is a steady 57 degrees.

What to Do in Bowling Green: Take a Tour of Lost River Cave

Like all caves, Lost River Cave is cool and comfortable all year. You’ll want to wear pants and take a sweatshirt or jacket.

What do you think: Is this the coolest cave in Kentucky? Would you take the boat into Lost River Cave?

Lost River Cave

Experience caves like never before by boarding a boat and journeying into this historic cave.  Lost River Cave  is full of stories and folklore as tales about outlaws, nightclubs, and the Civil War come to life.

The cave was once home to a historic cavern nite club in the 1930s, but now the club space hosts elaborate private events and weddings. A crystal chandelier hangs along with white draperies at the cave entrance, creating an enchanting backdrop to any occasion.

The Underground Boat Ride

After purchasing your lost river cave tour, guests will walk along a paved path to the river’s edge. Signs will help guide guests to the meeting area. Before entering the cave, the guide will give a 20-minute tour along the Lost River, explaining the blue holes, the history of the cave, and what precisely a lost river is.

The underground cave boat tour begins with getting children into life jackets before descending a ramp to board the boat. A light jacket may be helpful as the cave temperature is in the high 50s.

Once onboard, the tour guide will share stories of how outlaw Jesse James used the cave for a hideout. They point out fun formations, take you to the dam inside the cave and discuss the ecosystem inside it.

NOTE:  To get into the cave, you must duck your head for 15-20 seconds on the boat tour. This takes place at the very beginning of the tour.

Planning Tip:  Depending on the water level of the cave, tours may be canceled for several days in a row. Often the cave will flood after a rainstorm, preventing the boats from entering. I recommend calling if it has recently rained to ensure tours are operating.

Lost River Cave, the underground cave boat tour in Kentucky

by Trey Copeland | Last updated Oct 23, 2023

cave tours bowling green ky

Lost River Cave is a 72 acre park right in the middle of Bowling Green that features a natural cave, hiking trails, river, beautiful rock formations and more. There is a 20 acre prairie that is currently being restored to its natural state including native grasses and flowers to promote natural habitat for our local wildlife.

Living in Kentucky, we’ve seen our fair share of caves, rivers and sink holes. We live on one of the largest karst systems and close to the nearby Mammoth Cave , the worlds longest cave system with 405 miles of passageways.

If you have a scheduled boat tour, then I suggest you get to Lost River Cave at least 20 minutes early to check in and walk down to the cave. The tour is typically on time and they will begin the tour without you. We were a couple minutes behind and they had already began the tour telling the history of the cave.

Speaking of cave history, this cave is about 700,000 years old and has been used for many different purposes over the years. Jesse James even hid out in the cave while on the run from his Russellville Kentucky bank robbery .

The cave was used by Native Americans in the 1700s for shelter and water. It was also used as a popular night club in the 1900s. A mill was built on site to generate electricity for lights in the club at the cave entrance.

The underground boat tour is a 45 minute tour where you follow along with a guide that provides a history lesson of the cave before entering. They are very knowledgeable about the cave and provide a lot of interesting facts.

The first 20 minutes is the walk along the rivers edge telling about Kentucky’s limestone formations and cave history. The massive entrance to the cave is where you will board the large flat bottom boat underground and take the rest of the 25 minutes to float in the 4-5 foot deep water exploring the natural formations of the cave.

If you have infants and children, you must wear the provided life jackets while on the boat.

Once your loaded on the boat, the tour begins.

The first formation you come to is a large limestone rock right above your head. You actually have to duck your head really far down, otherwise your head will hit it. It’s actually very dangerous and people hit their head often.

Once you’ve passed the large overhead rock, you can sit up and the tour guide shines a flashlight at all the different stalactites and formations. They have named many of them. Some look like a hot dog and some look like a dinosaur t-rex.

At the back of the cave, the park has dammed it so that the tours can happen. If they did not dam the cave, then the water level would be too low for tours to happen.

This is where the boat parks for a few minutes to let you see the back of the cave and then it turns around and heads back out.

The Lost River Cave park has many other things to do besides the boat including a butterfly habitat where you can see all different species such as the Monarch, Painted Lady and the Red Admiral.

There’s a two mile nature trail that offers a gorgeous hike along the park. You can see Civil War history houses, blue holes and a natural spring. There are plenty of photo taking opportunities on the walk. During the Fall season, they host a Scarecrow Walk where different sponsors and local companies decorate scarecrows.

The Gem Mining is always a favorite with the kids. You can also visit the gift shop before you leave and pick up a wide variety of Lost River apparel that helps support the mission of the organization.

Our tour guide knew the area really well and not only was super nice and made good jokes on the tour, but he also gave us great recommendations for places to eat in the area. Would definitely recommend if you’re on the fence, they’re a non-profit so all of their operations are supported by tour visitors! Read more Written March 25, 2024

  • jameswG9726LU 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Neat boat ride. Worth the trip! I’d do it again! This was fun. Our female blond guide was wonderful! A short 15 minute walk from the parking lot down hill to the boat/cave. Then duck your head while you boat in. It opens up quite a bit inside. First time we’ve ever done boating in a cave. Think long pontoon boat with trolling motors. Good 25 minute ride through the cave and back out. Read more Written March 22, 2024
  • MoMarlin 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Exploring is Fun Touring Lost River Cave and the trails around is a great day trip. The cave tour is appropriate for younger kids. Though you are in a boat for the second half of the tour, it is large and feels super safe. The river tour is not super long, but it is very interesting. Children's attention won't be easily lost. The tour guides are very knowledgeable about the history and geography of the area and had great conversations with our group. We enjoyed walking the trails after the tour, not too long and provided historic content along the way. The families doing gem mining seemed to be having a good time it might be a miss for older kids(we chose not to spend the extra). There is also a natural play area that is very cool. Mammoth Cave National Park

*Mammoth Cave National Park's trails remain open for hiking, biking and equestrian use where it is possible to adhere to the latest social distancing guidelines. The Green and Nolin Rivers remain accessible for paddling, fishing and boating.

Additionally, MCNP reopened   access on June 1 to the visitor center, food and beverage operations, retail sales, and  self-guided cave tours inside Mammoth Cave with rangers stationed at key points along the tour. Beginning June 11, all park campgrounds will reopen.

There are caves all around the world, but none compare to Mammoth Cave! As the world’s longest-known cave system with over 400 known miles of passageways, this natural wonder and World Heritage Site should be on everyone’s list of must-have experiences. Mammoth Cave National Park is just 30 minutes from Bowling Green, Ky. and can easily be added to any Bowling Green or Kentucky vacation itinerary. A variety of underground tours offer a glimpse at 350 million-year-old rocks and fascinating animals adapted to life in the dark. It's the second-oldest tourist attraction in America, celebrating 200 years of cave tours in 2016. You will hear remarkable stories of human history including how African Americans played a vital role in developing both cave tours and the visitor experience.

With tours designed for a mixed audience, you can take it easy with the most popular tours or get down and dirty on a wild cave tour. Full tour descriptions and the current schedule is available at our main Bowling Green Visitor Information Center as well as the Tourism Kiosk inside the National Corvette Museum , or find it online at  https://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/gocavetours.htm. All tours begin and end at the new Visitor Center designed for gold-level certification as a sustainable, “green” building. Children under six are admitted free. Of course, the surreal beauty continues above ground with an abundance of activities including nature walks , bike trails, horseback riding, canoeing or kayaking down the Green River, and campfire programs. Visitors are encouraged to purchase their tickets through the reservation system at www.recreation.gov or by phone at 877-444-6777. In past years, morning tours did not sell out. Morning tours may be the best option for people who have not made advanced reservations. Call 270-758-2180 for up to the minute tour availability information.

Oh yes, and be sure to pack a jacket if you plan to tour underground! The cave maintains the average yearly temperature of the area, so it stays around 55˚ further past the cave entrances. *NOTE: February 24, 2014: White-nose syndrome has been found in tour routes of Mammoth Cave. Park staff discovered WNS in remote sections of Mammoth Cave including colonial hibernacula. Tours of Mammoth Cave continue. It is important to remember the disease affects bats, not humans. Therefore, tours and research are continuing at Mammoth Cave National Park, accompanied by extensive education and outreach on WNS, and adherence to approved cleaning methods recommended by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Visitors must walk through bio-security mats as they exit cave tours. To learn more about WNS and Mammoth Cave's efforts to limit its possible spread, visit https://www.nps.gov/maca/whitenose.htm.

Hours: Open year-round except Christmas day.

Top 8 Kentucky Caves to Tour

Universal Stopping Point Photography/Getty Images

We all know Kentucky's horse farms and hills are stunning sights, but have you explored what lies beneath these picturesque landscapes? You may not realize it, but Kentucky is home to an extensive system of caves, some of which may be toured. Cave exploring, also known as spelunking, is an ideal activity for science buffs and history aficionados alike.

Mammoth Cave

The world's longest surveyed cave system, Mammoth Cave contains 400 miles of explored passageways, with more being discovered each year. Mammoth Cave National Park provides tours covering more than 10 miles of the system. Most tours cover 1 to 2 miles. Along with its immense length, Mammoth Cave houses clues to how the cave has been used by humans for thousands of years.

Lost River Cave

Feel like going on an underground boat tour? Well, this is one spot you can do it. In addition to exploring this 7-mile cave system—including having to lower your head to enter an enormous cave—there are daily nature activities, easy walking trails, a discovery cave crawl for kids, and more.

2818 Nashville Road, Bowling Green, KY 42101

Diamond Caverns

When this cave was discovered in 1859, its first visitors said the area's glimmering stones looked like diamonds, and thus Diamond Cave received its name. The fourth-oldest cave attraction in the country, Diamond Caverns has a lighting system and handrails. The guided tour is a half mile.

Crystal Onyx Cave

Smaller than other Kentucky cave attractions, Crystal Onyx was discovered in 1960 and is now considered an important archeological site because Native American remains—some more than 3,000 years old—were found in the cave. Tours are a half mile and last approximately one hour.

Hidden River Cave & American Cave Museum

Located beneath the city of Horse Cave, Hidden River Cave was once the source of drinking water and hydroelectricity for the community. Groundwater pollution led to its closing in 1943.

In the late 1980s, the American Cave Conservation Association relocated its national headquarters to Horse Cave to restore Hidden River Cave and open a museum and educational center at the site. A bat rehabilitation center is also in progress. Hidden River Cave is now open to visitors year-round.

Mammoth Onyx Cave at Kentucky Down Under

Discovered in 1799, Mammoth Onyx Cave is part of a larger, Australian-themed attraction called Kentucky Down Under. With kangaroos, a bird garden, gem mining, and an outback cafe, Kentucky Down Under is a popular family attraction. A tour of the cave is included in admission to Kentucky Down Under.

Onyx Cave is a wet cave that was discovered in 1971 when a parking lot was being constructed. With its beautiful coral, a 40-foot column, and a wall of cave bacon, it was decided that it would be an attractive Kentucky cave tour; it opened in 1973. The cave is 60 degrees and tours are 30 minutes.

101 Huckleberry Knob Road, Cave City, Kentucky 42127

(Psst!... If you are in Cave City with the kids, drive by the Wigwam Village Inn, part of a motel chain that served as inspiration for the Cozy Cone Motels featured in the Pixar film Cars. )

Outlaw Cave at Kentucky Action Park

Outlaw Cave offers a guided tour of many classic cave formations. The cave was named Outlaw because bandits such as Jesse James hid out here and in other area caves. The natural formations were not only hidden but also large enough for the bandits to ride their horses into.
