No picnic, barbecue, or other group activity is complete until you introduce music, but the problem with portable speakers is that you either have to find an outlet for power or the speakers themselves are so poor that all you can hear is a garbled mess. The JBL On Tour XTB system makes a convenient accessory for summer activities; sound quality is top notch even at loud volumes and it can connect wirelessly through Bluetooth, but its slightly overpriced at $200. We stand behind the On Tour XTB if you can afford it, but if you're just looking for a basic, portable speaker, you and your wallet will get more satisfaction out of the $100 Philips SBD7500 .

The Bottom Line

At first glance, you might mistake the On Tour XTB for a smaller version of the popular Roomba vacuum cleaner, but the four speakers mounted on top of the unit give it away. We like the size of the XTB; at 6 inches wide, 6 inches tall, and 2.5 inches thick, the speaker won't become an obstruction in your travel bag. The exterior is covered in a glossy black finish and each of the four drivers is wrapped in a shiny chrome border for extra style points.

One of the speakers on top of the device features two volume buttons on either side and a small button on top that answers your phone if you have it connected via Bluetooth. There's no mic built into the speaker, but you can use it as a speakerphone along with your handset.

JBL puts all the other buttons including power, audio-in, and DC power ports on the opposite edge of the On Tour XTB, and Appleheads will certainly appreciate the extra USB port thrown in for charging your iPods and iPhones on the run.

Our issue with the physical design is that there's no indicator to go along with the two separate volume control buttons. JBL could have avoided this problem by simply using a one-piece volume dial or even a small LED, but as it stands there's no way to gauge volume settings aside from trial and error. The system also comes with a cheap plastic remote control that lets you control volume and playback.

Underneath the speaker you'll find five rubber feet that keep the device from sliding around on a tabletop as well as a rotating door that lifts up to uncover the battery compartment. The On Tour XTB takes four AA batteries and also accepts rechargables which, when paired with a Bluetooth device, allows for a truly cordless experience. JBL also gives you a separate AC adapter so you can plug it in at home.

You can connect the speaker to any audio source using the included line-in cable, or you can also pair them together with Bluetooth. Using JBL's simple instructions and a four-digit code, we established a connection using several different Bluetooth phones (including an iPhone 3GS and a Palm Pre) in less than 5 minutes. To streamline your uninterrupted listening experience, JBL also lets you answer, ignore, and switch lines using the aforementioned phone button on the speaker.

We should also point out that the On Tour XTB adheres to two modern advancements in Bluetooth technology: the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) allows for full stereo audio, and the Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) is also enabled for complete remote control using an external audio device, although Apple products won't allow volume controls to appear in the Bluetooth music-streaming mode for now. Obviously we won't ding JBL for Apple's protocols, but keep in mind that you'll have to walk back to the speaker to change the volume if you plan to use it with an iPhone 3G or 3GS. Strangely enough, Apple lets you change the ringer and call volume in Bluetooth calling mode.

Inside the unit you'll find four Odyssey neodymium drivers powering the speakers at 8 watts per channel, producing an impressive sound for such a small gadget. Keeping in mind the degradation of audio quality over a Bluetooth connection, we put the speakers through a variety of sound tests that included tracks from hip-hop, pop, metal, and jazz groups and were pleased with the outcome. Of course the emphasis on bass is much more subtle than with most desktop computer speakers, but these produced excellent clarity and instrument distinction even at maximum volume, certainly loud enough (maybe even too loud) for the average backyard party.

We also came away pleased with the quality of sound from the 3.5mm line input. The sound quality is slightly better than the Bluetooth connection, which is expected, but we expect most users will accept the trade-off with very little, if any, disappointment.

On M's desk in SkyFall , a JBL On Tour XTB speaker can be spotted. The device seems to be placed there as a speaker together with a Sony ECM-Z60 microphone as a conference speakerphone setup. The JBL On Tour XTB is a speaker that can be used wirelessly with Bluetooth enabled laptops, phones and mp3 players, or with a standard audio jack cable.

The model seen in the film is black with chrome/silver speakers, but this model is also available in black with black speakers or completely in white, so make sure you get the right version. The JBL On Tour XTB speakers are not produced anymore, but you might be able to find them in some stores or online on eBay . On Amazon.co.uk a seller used to offer these , but again, make sure you get the ones with the chrome/silver speakers if you want the same ones as in the film.

The JBL On Tour XTB comes with a remote control. Two volume buttons are placed on either side of one of the speakers and a small button on top that answers your phone if you have it connected via Bluetooth. The device has no microphone built in, but it can be used as a speakerphone along with your handset. On the other side of the speaker you can find the on/off button, audio input, and DC power port and an extra USB port. The speakers are powered via USB or even cordless if you put in some batteries.

The JBL On Tour iBT system is compatible with most Bluetoothenabled devices, music players, cell phones and laptops. Enabled with Bluetooth A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/ Video Remote Control Profile) and HFP (Hands-Free Profile), the system can stream high-quality sound and serve as a speakerphone. With the included Apple cable and additional stereo mini jack connection, you can enjoy high-quality audio via direct connection with a variety of devices such as iPad, iPhone, iPod, MP3 and CD players, desktop computers (all platforms), laptops and satellite radio tuners.

Use the included tabletop stand to support your iPad or other Bluetooth-enabled tablet while you're streaming to the JBL On Tour iBT. When you're ready to go, snap the stand right to the JBL On Tour iBT unit for easy and convenient transport.

The JBL On Tour iBT portable loudspeaker is a complete two-channel audio system in one easy-to-place footprint. The JBL On Tour iBT loudspeaker delivers sound with a powerfully tuned digital audio path. Its clean and compact digital amplification, coupled with DSP (digital signal processing) equalization, efficiently provides the four JBL Odyssey ® transducers with cool-running power.

The JBL On Tour iBT system combines many proprietary technologies to provide the highest-quality sound. It provides astonishing bass and clear, accurate sound from any direction. The four JBL Odyssey fullrange transducers are driven by powerful neodymium magnets, and provide accurate sound at all frequencies.

The JBL On Tour iBT system equalization is computer-optimized to provide a rich, complete soundstage. Proproetary compression topology ensures clean, accurate sound at high output levels.

Unpack the JBL On Tour iBT system and its power supply.

NOTE: The JBL On Tour iBT will not use battery power when using AC power.

DO NOT MIX BATTERY TYPES. DO NOT MIX CHARGED AND PARTIALLY CHARGED BATTERIES. BATTERIES WILL NOT RECHARGE WHILE IN THE UNIT.

Before you can use your JBL On Tour iBT system with a Bluetoothenabled device, you must pair it with that device.

To pair the JBL On Tour iBT with your device:

• Make sure your JBL On Tour iBT system is turned on. The JBL On Tour iBT unit automatically goes into Pairing/Discoverable mode, represented by the Source LED flashing blue.
• Put your Bluetooth-enabled device in Pairing mode so both devices can "see" each other. (Refer to the Bluetooth-enabled device's user's guide for directions and details about putting it into Pairing mode.) The JBL On Tour iBT unit will be represented as "JBL On Tour iBT" on your Bluetoothenabled device. The JBL On Tour iBT password is 0000.
• The JBL On Tour iBT system is successfully paired and ready to use when the Source LED glows a constant blue.

NOTE: Bluetooth pairing between two devices does not have to be repeated after a successful initial pairing, unless the JBL On Tour iBT system has been removed from the Bluetooth-enabled device's Bluetooth device list.

• Make sure the JBL On Tour iBT speaker is paired (see Bluetooth Pairing section).

NOTE: If the phone does not support voice recognition this action will redial the last number that was called on the phone.

LISTENING TO MUSIC

There are three ways to listen to music on your JBL On Tour i BT :

• Via Bluetooth technology from a Bluetooth-enabled device.
• Using the supplied Apple cable to connect an iPad, iPhone or iPod device to the JBL On Tour iBT's USB port.
• Using a stereo 3.5mm audio cable (not supplied) to connect an audio device's audio or headphone output to the JBL On Tour iBT's auxiliary 3.5mm mini jack.

White = Apple cable (USB port) Blue = Bluetooth (wireless) Green = Auxiliary 3.5mm mini jack

• Make sure the JBL On Tour iBT system is paired with your Bluetooth-enabled device (see Bluetooth Pairing section).
• Go to the Bluetooth-enabled device's music player and play music. Refer to the Bluetooth-enabled device's user's guide for directions and details about using its music player and transmitting music via Bluetooth technology.
• Use the Bluetooth-enabled device to control playback. Adjust the volume using the "+" and "–" buttons located on the front of the JBL On Tour iBT unit.

• Use the iPad, iPhone or iPod device to control playback. Adjust the volume using the "+" and "–" buttons located on the front of the JBL On Tour iBT unit.

NOTE : When the JBL On Tour iBT is running on AC power, it will recharge the iPad, iPhone or iPod device while it is connected.

• Control music playback through the auxiliary device. Adjust the volume using the "+" and "–" buttons located on the front of the JBL On Tour iBT unit.
